And every morning, something returns that we recognize as ourselves, without questioning whether it is.

This episode follows that assumption into more difficult terrain.

Beginning with what happens when consciousness does not return cleanly, it moves through illness, identity, and the body’s continuous exchange with the world around it. It considers experiences such as Alzheimer’s disease, where memory, language, and recognition may change, and asks what remains when the familiar expressions of a person become less accessible.

From there, the episode enters a question that philosophical and religious traditions have circled for centuries: What changes? What remains? And how much continuity is required before we still call something the same?

From the sixth-century philosophers Damascius and Philoponus to Buddhism’s stream of causes and conditions and Judaism’s reticence about what comes after, each tradition arrives at a different answer. But the question beneath them is shared.

What is it that continues?

Explore more from The Space Between: https://www.spacebetween.fm/

Support The Space Between: https://0399ce27c526ae8b521c27.captivate.fm/support

If this episode resonated with you, sharing it with someone who might appreciate it is one of the most meaningful ways to support the podcast.

Thank you for spending some time in the space between.

Mentioned in this episode:

Support The Space Between

If this series has opened something for you, sharing it with someone who might appreciate it is one of the most meaningful ways to support the work.
