This episode, we're telling the full story of "In the City" by Joe Walsh — a song with two lives, two legendary recordings, and one of the greatest guitar players rock has ever produced behind the mic.

In 1979, Walsh was asked by film composer Barry De Vorzon to write a song for the soundtrack of a gritty New York gang film called The Warriors. What he came up with drew from his own memories of growing up in Queens, New York — surviving the streets, the concrete, the chaos. The result was raw, urgent, and undeniable.

Then his Eagles bandmates heard it — and they wanted it too.

"In the City" ended up on The Eagles' The Long Run — their final studio album of their original run — the same year it appeared on The Warriors soundtrack. Two versions. One extraordinary song.

What makes a song a classic? Sometimes it takes the world a few years to catch up.

On this episode of Sonic Legacy, we dive deep into one of hard rock's most iconic tracks — "Mother" by Danzig, originally released in August 1988 as the lead single from their debut album.

We unpack the fascinating backstory behind the song: it found an audience with hardcore fans in 1988, but it cast a much wider net in 1993 when it was remixed and re-released as a single — nearly six years after its debut.

The story behind the lyrics is just as compelling as the music itself. "Mother" is something of a hard-rock protest song against censorship, written as a direct response to the Parents Music Resource Center, which in the mid-1980s made it its goal to try and safeguard children from what its members saw as "offensive" music. Glenn Danzig called it out plainly: "Al Gore wanted to tell people what they could listen to and what they couldn't... It was really fascist."

We also get into the legendary music video — the original 1988 video was rejected by MTV for its ending sequence, which contained imagery of a chicken being sacrificed — and how that controversy only fueled the song's mystique.

A live version of "Mother" eventually became a video hit, and the group started gaining wider exposure, ultimately pushing the track to number 17 on the Billboard Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart and 43 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Greg Kihn: A Retrospective

Greg Kihn, the singer-songwriter and bandleader best known for his hits "Jeopardy" and "The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write 'Em)," passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy that spans decades. Born in Baltimore in 1949, Kihn moved to California in the early 1970s, where he became a fixture of the Bay Area music scene. His band, The Greg Kihn Band, gained popularity in the late '70s and early '80s with their infectious blend of rock, pop, and new wave.

Kihn's music was characterized by its catchy hooks and relatable lyrics, often dealing with love and relationships. "Jeopardy," released in 1983, became a massive hit, reaching No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and solidifying Kihn's place in pop-rock history. The song's iconic music video, which played heavily on MTV, further cemented its success.

Beyond his music career, Greg Kihn was also an author, DJ, and later a radio personality, continuing to influence the music world from behind the microphone. Jack Russell: A Retrospective

Jack Russell, the powerhouse vocalist and founding member of the hard rock band Great White, passed away, leaving behind a legacy intertwined with the story of one of the most iconic bands of the 1980s and early '90s. Great White broke into the mainstream with their album Once Bitten in 1987, featuring the hit single "Rock Me."
