Balloonfest '86: Tragedy or Triumph?

On Septempber 27, 1986, The United Way of Greater Cleveland held Balloonfest. The organizers' goal was to set a world record for the simultaneous release of small helium-filled balloons. They hoped the event would improve Cleveland’s image. On that afternoon, the skies above Public Square were filled with nearly 1.5 million balloons, which were inflated by a corps of volunteers. By some accounts, however, the event that was intended to raise the standing of the city, quickly turned into a disaster. This is the true tale of Balloonfest.

Interview: 80s Freestyle with DJ Martinee

Will chats with DJ Martinee the multi-platinum record-selling songwriter and producer, who helped pioneer freestyle music in the 1980s.

In 1984, DJ Martinee formed the hit vocal group Exposé, which became the first to attain four Top 10 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, including the song written by our guest “Seasons Change.” In fact, he wrote all of the songs on the band’s first album “Exposure” and most of the tracks on their 1989 follow up “What You Don’t Know.”

DJ Martinee has also produced, written and remixed tracks for a number of other popular artists, including Ricky Martin, Dead or Alive, Celine Dion and The Pet Shop Boys. Today, our guest continues to working on new music in the studio and spinning hits as a DJ in the clubs.

His latest group O-Baby, which includes Laurie Miller, a founding member of Exposé, will be performing March 7 at Café 27 in Southwest Ranches, Florida. And you can hear remixes of “Point of No Return,” featuring O-Baby, and including a wonderful ballad-version of the hit track, on all streaming platforms.

After working with legend Lloyd Kaufman at Troma, Matt created production company Not the Funeral Home, reviving horror hosting with The Last Drive-in with Joe Bob on AMC+ and Shudder, producing high-value, low-budget films and raising over half a million dollars for charity.

On this episode, Will chats with Will Rigby, drummer and founding member of The dB's. While The dB's are credited with influencing the sound of others that came later in the decade, the band did not have the commercial success it deserved. Their path to greater exposure was likely hampered by the limited releases of their first two albums. In the 1980s, "Stands for Decibels" and "Repercussion" were only released on vinyl by the UK label Albion. Music lovers would have to find their record in a store that imported EPs or be among the few fortunate enough to hear them on an independent radio station. Catherine has starred in a number of other iconic 1980s films, including Mischief, Dudes and Weekend at Bernies. Additionally, she also starred on TV shows and miniseries. She originated the role of Kayla Brady on "Days of Our Lives" and starred as the younger version of a Joan Collins' character on "Sins." She also guested on a number of our favorites, including "Mr. Merlin," "Knight Rider" and "Alfred Hitchcock Presents."

Beginning in 2015, fans of 1984's "The Last Starfighter" were thrilled when a potential sequel was teased. That excitement was buoyed when “Rogue One” scribe Gary Whitta announced he was working with Jon on the project—and ultimately released concept art for the film in 2021. Sadly, however, those hopes were dashed in September 2022, when Whitta responded to a fan on Twitter, writing, “To be honest there's a decent chance it never happens.” And since then, there have been no updates.

On this episode, Will chats with Jonathan Betuel, the writer of "The Last Starfighter," about the origins of the film, his experience with arcade games, and whether a potential sequel is still in the works.

In 2020, less than a year after the launch of our inaugural podcast, we reached out to a number of iconic 1980s artists who would wanted to interview. And although at the time we did not have a track record of celebrity interviews, Cindy Morgan ("Caddyshack", "Tron") accepted our invitation. To our delight, she was more than just polite, she was generous, vulnerable, and honest.

In our interview, we discuss the career path that landed the former radio host in "Caddyshack," a film in which she appeared opposite the biggest comedic actors of the era. Cindy also shares her experience with producer Jon Peters that derailed what seemed to be her path to stardom.

Sadly, Cindy died last month at her home in Florida.
