Gerry G. Register begins with joy unspeakable, peace and rest known only in Christ, and with being ready for His return. Faith cometh by hearing, and Lydia in Acts 16 shows what true hearing is: the Lord opened her heart, and she attended unto the things spoken of Paul. Without that opening "it'll just be information," for the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God. The word of Christ must be joined to the operation of the Holy Spirit to produce active faith, and that faith is specific, not general: "the Holy Spirit deals in specifics," working on particular things. The churches ask no accountability; "People today can very easily hide in the group," yet no man can have the Spirit poured into his heart and not know it.

Romans 10 - Peace with God and Joy Unspeakable

Working in Romans 10, Gerry G. Register goes back first to Romans 6: how shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein? Dead is past tense, an accomplished thing, and he that is dead is freed not only from sin's consequence but from its power. "The power of sin has no dominion over you any longer." There is the Spirit and there is the flesh, and no middle ground. The second half takes up tradition, from Matthew 15, Isaiah 29, Ezekiel 33 and Mark 7: men make the commandment of God of none effect by their tradition, and a believism gospel handed down through the denominations has become exactly that. Then back to Romans 10 and a zeal not according to knowledge, with Jeremiah's broken cisterns set against the fountain of living waters.

Romans 10 - Christ Our Satisfaction - Living in a State of Satisfaction and Thankfulness

Gerry G. Register opens on what the Lord put on his heart that morning: the Christian life is a real relationship with the Christ we were once at enmity with. "He's real to us. And we walk with him and talk with him." The body is the hearing of faith from Galatians 3 and Luke 8, hearing with the intent to know and obey; knowing the Bible without it is no spiritual life at all. Take heed how ye hear, for from him that hath not shall be taken even that which he seemeth to have. He allows no gray middle where men get there by staying in church long enough: "They will not get to it." He ends in rest and thankfulness, because "Jesus Christ must be your satisfaction," and a satisfied life is a witness to a world going from pillar to post.

Romans 10 - Separation from the World - The Key to Readiness

Gerry G. Register calls separation from the world the key to readiness. Reading 2 Corinthians 6, he presses each of Paul's questions: what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness, what communion hath light with darkness. "We have made this whole area gray now in the church." Perfecting holiness is no theory: "You are actually becoming holy in your life." God excludes man's participation, for man's will is self-pleasing and God will not share the glory. The two kinds of hearing in Matthew 13 show that true hearing comes by the Spirit, and the effectual call draws the elect as a magnet draws a nail. He closes in Revelation 6, men hiding from the face of Him that sitteth on the throne, and asks what we are doing with the time we have left.

Romans 10 - True Christian - Dead to the World and Hidden with Christ in God

Gerry G. Register opens on Jesus, I Am Resting. The first thing God does in regeneration is change the heart, and that separates true Christians from the rest; religious people "want to confuse maturity with conversion." Being justified by faith, we have peace with God, and only so can we rest. At Pentecost the hearers were pricked in their heart because the apostles were filled with the Holy Ghost; telling men to repent and be baptized without that leaves "a missing factor." Then Colossians 3: set your affection on things above, for "the affections set the mode for the will." Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God, a safe place: dead to the world, to sin, and to a religion that winks at sin.

Romans 10 - Chastisement and Correction - Certain for God's Own

Gerry G. Register opens on Wesley's And Can It Be: an imprisoned spirit, fast bound in sin, until His eye diffused a quickening ray and the chains fell off; the heart was free to serve God. God takes out the heart of stone and causes His people to walk in His statutes. "Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness?" A death so costly was not left to man's free will; God will not share His work with it: "It ain't happening." Then Hebrews 12: whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth. A man with no correction that actually changes his life is not a son: "You're illegitimate." God chastens for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness, and afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness.

Romans 10 - We Have an Unction - Our Weapon against False Doctrine

Gerry G. Register opens on A Mighty Fortress, then on the Spirit as the one who unlocks the Scriptures; in our whole religious profession "the Holy Spirit is a bystander, as it were." Since the enmity declared in the garden there has been a war, and the Spirit is in us to show it and to be our arms. The true Christian walks upstream against the world's flow, "Because the filthiness of the world is just too much to the true Christian." Then 1 John 5: whosoever is born of God sinneth not; little children, keep yourselves from idols. Last, Revelation 12: the flood cast out of the serpent's mouth is false doctrine, and the earth that swallows it is the unction of the Spirit in us, which "gobbles up that falseness and keeps us from accepting it."

Romans 10 - The Gift and Power of Grace

Gerry G. Register opens on the hymn Jesus, Thou hast bought us: "We don't belong to ourselves anymore." Christianity is something God does in us, and the good pleasure He works in us both to will and to do is holiness: "His good pleasure is not doing things for Him." Then Romans 6: sin shall not have dominion over you, for ye are not under the law, but under grace. Grace comes in two parts, the gift we did not earn and the power our day has lost: "There's always grace to overcome." Then 1 John: he that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar. Love not the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The Christian walks upstream against the world's current, and Christ died not to offer separation but to ensure it.

Romans 10 - Only Those Led by the Spirit of God Are the True Children of God

Gerry G. Register opens on Come, Thou Almighty King, praying that the Spirit of holiness would rule in every heart, then reads Romans 10 through to its close: the preaching goes out to all, but is effectual only in the elect. Then life in the Spirit. The Spirit leads by influencing the will: "He massages our will." Those who have the Spirit cannot help but walk in it; "It's not something you've got to try hard to do." As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God, and if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His. Love to God and love to others go together, and Christ came not to send peace but a sword, dividing families: "We're on two sides here." And believing with the heart is far more than we think; God must work it in a man.

Romans 10 - Living by Faith - Without Doing So We Cannot Please God

Gerry G. Register takes up the just shall live by faith: God causes those He justifies to live by it, and it is rarely seen because "it gets too close to having to obey God." Saving faith cannot come from a man still in Adam; God changes the heart and grants the faith. Then Romans 12: present your bodies a living sacrifice, and be not conformed to this world, but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind. The Spirit deletes and reloads, so "has your mind been reprogrammed to spiritual things"? Then Romans 8:28-32, and assurance: the idea that a man may be saved without it is "Absolute, utter nonsense." Sanctification is first separation unto God, then step by step conformity to Christ. He closes in John 14: if ye love me, keep my commandments.

Romans 10 - Dead to Sin - Alive unto God

Gerry G. Register returns to Romans 3: there is none that seeketh after God. Everything hinges on man's depravity, and misunderstanding it "has been the one issue that has ruined the visible church." A decision for Christ alone does not put God's seed in a man; it holds out only the hope of escaping hell. Then back through Romans: justification by faith, God justifying the ungodly, and peace with God as the enmity is broken. Then Romans 6:6, our old man crucified with Him. Toward sin the Christian is like a dead horse, and whatever the devil does, "It ain't going to faze you," for God has made him dead to it. Alive unto God he is "like a spry alive and ready to obey horse," with God at the reins. The question is whether he lives by faith day to day.

Romans 10 - Saving Faith - A Faith God Must Give

Gerry G. Register sums up the chapter: Romans 10 is about true saving faith. God knew His elect before the world was, and when He quickens them, "you instantly have spiritual vision"; the desires change first, and old habits fall away "because the Holy Spirit's not having it." Put the power of salvation in man's hands and the whole thing falls apart. Christ does not stand at the door hat in hand: "He's not begging anybody for anything." Then Ephesians 2: even when we were dead in sins, God hath quickened us. Faith is the ticket God gives, which no man could produce, and the same ticket serves in every problem afterward; that is living from faith to faith. There is none that seeketh after God, and no man has a right to be saved.

Romans 10:14-21 - Unspiritual Christianity

Gerry G. Register opens on the refrain Stayed upon Jehovah: a heart stayed on the Lord at all times, which only the Spirit living in the heart can make real. Then back to Romans 10: how shall they preach, except they be sent? "Uncalled, uninspired, yet very talented and gifted preachers" are the devil's great weapon in the visible church. Then unspiritual Christianity, which "retains the theory of godliness" without the reality, for the flesh is still active and the man is still married to the world, and an attempt at morality has taken godliness's place. What would Jesus do was never the point: "The point is, what would Jesus have us to do?" And how, without the Spirit's power? Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.

Romans 10:14-21 - Rest and Peace or Fear and Anxiety

Gerry G. Register sets the frame: every phase of a true Christian's life is "not about us, per se, and not about our being blessed, but totally about our sanctification." Unto you it is given not only to believe on Christ but also to suffer for His sake. Then the next order of business for the new Christian: to live by faith, resting in God's sovereignty. The professing Christian with a man-made faith fears what God might require: give up my plans and goals? "Are you kidding me?" But "True Christians are made to rest and live in peace." God hath not given us the spirit of fear, which is the devil's territory. Be careful for nothing, but in every thing give thanks, accepting whatever answer God chooses. The just shall live by faith, and faith "is a whole way of life."

Romans 10:14-21 - Called and Sent - Not Educated and Hired

Gerry G. Register carries on with true preachers, against so many men who have gone "into the preaching business" without being called and sent. A man sent of God has the word in his heart as a burning fire shut up in his bones; he is not looking up old sermons to fill a pulpit. God chooses whom He will, a Saul of Tarsus or Amos the herdsman, and prepares him Himself. "No amount of learning or education in biblical studies can replace the man chosen by God." The seminary is "an academic affair and it's not designed to produce godly men"; it does not demand holiness, and only God makes preachers. And the heart of it: Christianity is Christ, a Person who has called and captured you as His own, and the Christian life is walking in obedience and devotion to Him.

Romans 10:14-21 - Walking in the Spirit - Always Doing the Next Thing He Has for Us

Gerry G. Register opens on Like a River Glorious and carries on with the Spirit's power to make us overcome. Walking in the Spirit is "Doing the next thing. Walking in the next thing." It is not a striving for the especially committed, for the Spirit works in us both to will and to do of His good pleasure: "It's his job, you see." For the unconverted there is no overcoming at all; like two poles of a magnet, God's holiness repels sin. Then Romans 6: shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid. He calls it "this thing that burns in my heart," for the modern church turns on this one issue. The core of sin is self-preservation, the little sins held back. He closes on the burden of a true preacher, the word as a burning fire shut up in his bones.

Romans 10:14-21 - Accepting God's Answer - The Just Shall Live by Faith

Register carries on from last week: saving faith does not originate with us, and we are created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which are not church tasks but living for God in everything, whether in a ministry or "as a housewife doing dishes." Then Romans 8: all things work together for good to them that love God, and if God be for us, who can be against us? Where then is the place for anxiety? Then the just shall live by faith, and he presses the grammar: "It's not a plea," for God ensures it by His Spirit in them. And here faith is proven: "True faith not only trusts God with the problem but readily accepts whichever way God deals with or uses the problem in our life." Trusting God to do what you want done is not faith at all.

Romans 10:14-21 - Preaching in the Spirit - A Shaft with a Spear Point

Gerry G. Register carries obedience into the lordship of Christ: no man puts himself under it; God places him there by regeneration. Then preaching. Reading sermons is not what Paul means, and teaching is not preaching; a man sent of God keeps making application, confronting the hidden sins "parked there" in the heart. The truth is delivered "like a shaft with a spear point penetrating the hearts" of the hearers. His job is to present Christ as the only way of rescue, "And to be rescued by Christ is to be owned by him." So on the road to Emmaus Christ opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures. And he that doeth truth cometh to the light, his deeds wrought in God, as iron is worked in the forge.

Romans 10:14-21 - To Obey Is Better than Work and Sacrifice

Gerry G. Register opens on the hymn, died He for me, who caused His pain: it was our sin that made the cross necessary, and that is no light thing. Then Romans 10:14-21, how shall they hear without a preacher, and how shall they preach, except they be sent? There is a general call to all and an effectual call to some, for many are called, but few are chosen. Can a man simply decide "to go into the preaching business"? He must be sent. Most who profess Christ rely on their decision and their church. As for the slogan that God has a wonderful plan for your life: "if you're not converted, you don't want that plan," for the plan is conformity to Christ. And from Saul: to obey is better than sacrifice, and obedience is always "primo in God's eyes."

Romans 10:1-13 - Born Again - Brought into God's Space

Gerry G. Register opens on the comfort of being in Christ while the world is in turmoil: the body they may kill, His truth abideth still. Christians are those who call upon the name of the Lord, and those called to be saints; God makes the first move, and no man can truly call on Him while holding his own life in reserve. Then childlikeness: blessed are the poor in spirit; revealed unto babes; except ye be converted, and become as little children. "God doesn't help those that help themselves. God helps the helpless." And what regeneration does at once: the born-again man knows "he or she has been given entrance into God's space," no longer alienated or afraid, and for the first time wants to please God rather than run from Him. God has put His law in his heart.

Romans 10:1-13 - Dead until Quickened

Gerry G. Register opens on the resurrection hymn: Christ arose, and His rising is the sign that the Father accepted the sacrifice. Then believing from the heart and confessing Jesus as Lord, not only Lord of all but Lord of your life. To walk in the Spirit is to need His help daily, for without Me ye can do nothing, and a self-sufficient man is "just beating the air." Nor can the dead help themselves: "Being dead is dead." Then lordship as Christ put it: a man may accept Jesus, be baptized and join the church and still save his life to himself, and whosoever will save his life shall lose it. A false church always leaves a way to be right with God and stay in sin. And he reads Spurgeon on a definite atonement: Christ did not die for Judas as He died for Peter.

Romans 10:1-13 - Whatever You Love More than God - That Is Your Idol

Gerry G. Register opens on the hymn just sung, He breaks the power of reigning sin, He sets the prisoner free: a Christian was once a prisoner to sin, as most around us still are. Then Colossians 3: if ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above; mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth, and covetousness, which is idolatry. "If there's something in your life that you care about more than you care about obeying God, then that's your idol." The new man walks in the Spirit, day by day, and works out his salvation with fear and trembling, fearing to miss what the Spirit has for him to do. Then John 10 and John 6: ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep; my sheep hear my voice; no man can come to me, except the Father draw him.

Romans 10:1-13 - True Conversion - A Miracle of God's Power or an Act of Free Will and the Flesh?

Gerry G. Register begins with Paul's preaching: a preacher unaware of the Holy Spirit's power working through him should never enter the pulpit, and the visible church is powerless because the Spirit is not in its preaching. Becoming a Christian is a miracle, a rebel's heart changed by God, but "Christianity has been removed from the supernatural category and just placed into the believism category," and now hangs on the free will of man. "I'm going to preach this until I'm dead." Then verse 11, whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed: whosoever is whoever is called, Jew or Gentile, for all that the Father giveth me shall come to me. A depraved man cannot call on his own. And from Joel 2 to Pentecost: men pricked in their heart and told to repent.

Romans 10:1-13 - Today's False Gospel - Dressing a Dead Man with a New Suit

Gerry G. Register asks again whether Jesus is Lord or only Saviour, since "for Christ to be your Lord, you literally are His slave, His servant." Through Philippians 2, he takes up pride: the Lord is against all of it, and anything of eternal worth in us was given. So humility is the easy way: "It's the easiest thing to live the Christian life if you grab hold of this principle." Then a long reading from Spurgeon on ye must be born again: the name of a Christian is not the nature of one. He applies it to the modern gospel, which gets men to accept Jesus, join the church and be baptized, and "all we have done is dress up a dead corpse." True Christianity has not changed; man changed it to suit his flesh. And a Christian's life as he lives it is his witness.

Romans 10:1-13 - Humility - Of No Reputation?

Gerry G. Register carries on from looking foolish to the world: a Christian's stance on the Scriptures will make him look foolish, and that is part of confessing Jesus as Lord. Separation from the world is "the number one most important part of our witness." Then Ephesians 4: walk not as other Gentiles walk, their understanding darkened because of the blindness of their heart, but be renewed in the spirit of your mind. Man's own way is like "holding onto a life preserver that's got a fault in it." Then Philippians 2: in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves, and let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus, who made himself of no reputation. "Drop the pride. Consider yourself as nothing and nobody."

Romans 10:1-13 - The True Christian - Surrounded, Captured and Imprisoned to Biblical Truth

Gerry G. Register calls true conversion the premier problem of the day and rereads Romans 10:8-13. The new covenant promise is that God will put His Spirit within us and cause us to walk in His statutes, so a heart that believes Jesus is Lord submits to Him. Pride is the root of refusal, the sin that made the devil the devil; it would rather blend in than be embarrassed by God. Christ is Lord of a Christian's thinking too, which is why false doctrine and evolution have no hold on him: "the true Christian will be hemmed in to biblical truth hemmed in surrounded captured." Then 2 Corinthians 6, be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, applied even to church members, for the wide way is a crowd "marching lockstep to one direction and falling over the cliff."

Romans 10:1-13 - True Faith Leaves All Things in God's Hands

Gerry G. Register opens on Hebrews 11, those who died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. The heart must be changed before the mind, for the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God. God secures a willing obedience by putting the desire in the heart; show him a man without it and "I'll show you someone who's never been converted." The context we forget: for a Jew, to confess Jesus as Lord was blasphemy, and no man can say that Jesus is the Lord but by the Holy Ghost. True faith leaves everything to God, even a plane in the air: "it's in God's hands." And the Spirit comes in bringing "his baggage love joy peace long suffering."

Romans 10:1-13 - Disobedience - The Proof That We Actually Hate God

Gerry G. Register keeps to Romans 10:8-13, which he calls all about saving faith, and gives the sentence the morning hangs on: "Obedience to the Word of God is the first fruit of believing from the heart." Through Acts he gathers the places where the heart is at issue: Stephen's hearers, stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart; the eunuch, if thou believest with all thine heart. A calloused heart must be circumcised by the Spirit, for "You can't uncallous your heart." Then Romans 6:17, ye have obeyed from the heart. The natural heart is like a gun safe, locking away what a man loves most, and the most valuable thing in it came from Adam: the demand to be lord of his own life. So "the proof of our hatred of God is our rejection of Christ's lordship."

Romans 10:1-13 - Have You Left the Darkness and Come into the Light?

Gerry G. Register stays in Romans 10:8-13 to show every way he can that saving faith is of the heart and not of the intellect. Every man has a natural faith, the kind that trusts a pilot; saving faith is another thing, given of God. Believism and covenant works look like opposites, but both come out of the natural heart, deceitful above all things. Unbelief is a matter of the heart: "It's not a lack of education." A man may be as religious as the next, but "you do not want God coming into your life and messing up your plans." Then John 3:19 and the verse after it, the one left off: every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. To believe from the heart is to come into the light and say "examine me try me."

Gerry G. Register returns to Romans 10:8-13, and to the Spirit: nothing happens in the spiritual realm unless the Holy Spirit is in it. So the churches have a form of godliness and deny the power. The exceeding greatness of His power to us-ward who believe is the power that raised Christ, and it takes that much to break a man's enmity. Are you looking for Christ's return, or afraid of it? "I can't wait for his return." His appearing is about judgment, unconverted preachers included. Then the hardest sentence: "Believism and lawless Christianity is no Christianity at all." It denies Christ His lordship and rejects the Holy Spirit as its leader. And the Spirit's power is not to heal people, but "to continue to keep ourselves healed" by overcoming sin and temptation.

Romans 10:1-13 - Fooled by the Deceitfulness of Sin

Gerry G. Register stays in Romans 10:8-13, making sure nothing is missed. The word is nigh thee, in thy mouth and in thy heart, and verse 9 cannot be used as a quick way to get people saved. Without regeneration, whatever else a man learns in Scripture never reaches him: "none of it means anything. It's just a waste of time." To believe from the heart is to deny self and take Christ as Lord, not merely Saviour. The overcoming Christian is not perfect, "but we're pretty darn good at it." Then the deceitfulness of sin, which persuades a man he is all right while he keeps the sin he wants, so that he holds to his believism "like a dog with a bone." And the resurrection, by which Christ destroyed the works of the devil and made the power to walk in newness of life ours.

As many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God; where the Spirit is not preeminent, man's reasoning takes over and false doctrine follows. With the heart man believeth unto righteousness, and he stops to ask what that means. The Jews were zealous and sincere and wrong, because it never came from the heart. Can Christians do miracles? "Yes, that's the biggest miracle right there, that we can live holy by the spirit's grace." Justification is by faith only, and the works that follow do not get a man there. Gerry G. Register spends Romans 10:6-15 on verse 13: whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. Calling on the Lord is not a plea to escape hell. In the Old Testament it meant repentance and return; and so now: "you call upon him to come in and take over." The order is the argument. How shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? Faith is given first, in regeneration, and out of it a man calls. How shall they preach except they be sent? A man may surrender to preach without surrendering to Christ as Lord The test of a sent man is whether the Spirit makes the word a reality in those who hear, for "He doesn't waste words and He doesn't waste situations." And abiding in Christ is all the time, whether running a business or digging a ditch.

Romans 10:1-5 - Zealous but Wrong!

Gerry G. Register comes to Romans 10:1-5 by way of two readings from Spurgeon on election, a doctrine that ought to produce great gratitude and humility. Israel has a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge. How should a Christian deal with the unconverted closest to him? The god of this world has blinded their minds, and only God can open them; our part is to walk in the Spirit, since a witness that is only talk is not effective. Then false zeal and true: "false zeal has to be propped up or worked up," while true zeal flows like rivers of living water. And verse 4: Christ is the end of the law for righteousness, yet "Christ did not die to lower the standard of the law." The law is God's holy character, worked into the believer by the Spirit.

Romans 9:19-33 - The Remnant - Saved by Election

Gerry G. Register takes Romans 9:19-33, beginning with why preachers shy away from election: to the natural man it is an offense, but to a true church a glorious thing. To the objection, why doth he yet find fault, Paul gives no explanation, only who art thou that repliest against God. Free will is answered flatly: "we have no free will." The enmity always chooses self, and the man who objects to election does not want what it is for, a life of holiness. Then the potter and the clay: vessels of wrath fitted to destruction, and vessels of mercy on whom He makes known the riches of His glory. That is what a witness is: "A true witness, they see the riches of God's glory in your life." And the stumbling stone today is that Christ must be obeyed.

Romans 9:4-18 - Is It Fair That God Only Saves Those He Chooses?

Gerry G. Register takes Romans 9:4-18, taking Israel's privileges one by one. The Old Testament shows what God is really like, and "He hasn't changed the way he operates." They are not all Israel which are of Israel: a spiritual people within the visible nation, like the 7,000 reserved in Elijah's day, and as in the visible church now. Isaac, not Ishmael; Jacob and Esau, not yet born, that the purpose of God according to election might stand. Paul would never have asked whether there is unrighteousness with God if God merely foresaw who would believe. The objection is always the same: "You didn't give them a chance to do anything. You just chose before they were even born." And Paul says that is correct. It is not of him that willeth, but of God that sheweth mercy.

Romans 9:1-3 - Christ Did Not Come to Bring Peace

Gerry G. Register opens on the hymn just sung: long my imprisoned spirit lay, till Thine eye diffused a quickening ray and the chains fell off. That is regeneration, and the only response is to rise and follow. Believing and repenting are not conditions of salvation but the means by which God effects the election. Then Romans 9:1-3, Paul's great heaviness for his kinsmen according to the flesh, and a long reading he endorses: Christ came not to send peace, but a sword, and the gospel divides even households. Where the Spirit is in two people, "there's a party going on right there." The real battlefield is the tares in the visible church: "Most preaching in our country, in the modern churches, cater to the tares that are there."

Romans 8:16-39 - Predestined to Conformity (Before His Return)

The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God; of the teaching that a Christian may lack assurance: "I don't believe that a bit." Joint heirs with Christ, if so be that we suffer with Him: "it's part of the deal," against the teaching that escape from suffering is our inheritance. The creation waits for the manifestation of the sons of God, and the Spirit helps our infirmities, for we know not what we should pray for. Then the golden chain: foreknown, predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son, called, justified, glorified. Foreknowledge is God setting His love on a man beforehand, not foreseeing who would believe. And nothing shall be able to separate us from the love of God.

Romans 8:1-15 - God's People Are Led by His Spirit

Gerry G. Register opens Romans 8, one of his favourite chapters, and gives the whole morning to the flesh and the Spirit. Righteousness is imputed for acceptance in heaven and imparted for holiness in life; modern doctrine takes only the one side. The righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us, "who what? Walking not after the flesh, but after the Spirit." A man walks in one or the other, and the religious man not led by the Spirit is in the flesh too. To be carnally minded is death, because the carnal mind is enmity against God. If any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of His: "There's no being a Christian without the spirit of God." Mortifying the deeds of the body is not an option offered to Christians but what the Spirit does in them.

Romans 7 - Do We Ignore God's Law or Delight in It?

Gerry G. Register sets out the purpose of Romans 7: the place of the law in a Christian's life, what it does and what it cannot do. Sin takes occasion by the commandment and rises up against it. The law is holy, and just, and good, the mind and character of God: "the problem is not the law, the problem is us." Dead to the law by the body of Christ, we are married to another, that we should bring forth fruit unto God. Then his long correction: O wretched man that I am is not the Christian Paul. Those who read it so are looking for "an excuse to continue to sin," blind to what chapters 5 and 6 have said. It is a man under conviction, left where the law is meant to leave him. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus.

Romans 6 - Can We Continue to Live a Sinful Life?

Antinomianism is not an old objection but the normal thinking of our day, with the devil's warning not to obey too much lest you become "legalistic about your salvation." Dead to sin is a thing already done: Christ died unto sin once, and God counts it to those placed in Him, as cloth dipped in a bowl of dye takes the colour all through. Buried with Him, raised to walk in newness of life. Yet let not sin reign in your mortal body, neither yield your members, your mind, memory, talents and voice: "don't you lend the enemy your weapons." Sin shall not have dominion over you. His servants ye are to whom ye obey.

Romans 5 - In Adam or Elect in Christ?

Gerry G. Register reviews Romans 5:1-11 and stops on rejoicing: "it's almost as if it were sin for us not to rejoice." Then verse 12: by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin. A man is not a sinner because he sinned; he is counted a sinner from the womb, because Adam is the federal head of mankind, as an ambassador's signature binds a whole country. From Ephesians 2 he asks how many professing Christians still walk according to the course of this world. Adam and Christ are the only two heads: "There's no middle ground here." By one man's disobedience many were made sinners; by the obedience of One shall many be made righteous. The law entered that the offence might abound, but where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.

Romans 5 - At Peace with God?

Gerry G. Register takes Romans 5:1-11: therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God. Faith is inwrought, worked into a man as soapy water is worked into the fabric on a washboard, and so it runs toward holiness. Peace with God is not the peace of God that keeps the heart in trial; it is the enmity broken. Of those who profess Christianity, "my first question is, do you have peace with God?" Then standing in grace, and rejoicing in hope of the glory of God, which means we shall see Him. Tribulation worketh patience, and patience experience, and experience hope, and hope maketh not ashamed, because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost. Of the teaching that a Christian may lack assurance: "I believe that's nonsense."

Romans 4 - Does God Owe You Salvation Because You Believe?

Gerry G. Register takes Romans 3:27 to the end of chapter 4. Where is boasting then? It is excluded. Abraham attained nothing by works, by circumcision or by the law; he left his father's house not knowing whither he went: "He trusted God, and he committed himself to doing whatever God said because it was God." Then the question he asks each hearer to answer honestly: "Does God have to grant you salvation because you believe?" A faith that puts God in its debt is a human faith, and makes faith void. Circumcision was a seal of a righteousness already there, as baptism is a sign and never the cause. Abraham against hope believed in hope, fully persuaded that what God had promised He was able also to perform.

Romans 3 - Redeemed from the Power of Sin

Gerry G. Register goes back over the end of Romans 3: "Nobody spends this kind of time on Romans 3." But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, resting on the facts of Christ's death, resurrection and ascension. Forgiveness alone does not fit a man for heaven; he must be clothed in righteousness, and the guest without a wedding garment in Matthew 22 was speechless and cast out. Justification is God's declaration, given freely; faith is only the instrument, and God gives it. Redemption is a man freed from jail because someone paid what he owed, and it frees him from sin's power as well as its penalty: "the power of sin has been destroyed." Then Abraham believed God, and to him that worketh the reward is reckoned of debt.

Romans 3 - Do We Do Away with God's Law?

Preachers love believism "because it's an easy gig," and the true legalist is the man confident his own faith has earned him salvation. Let God be true, but every man a liar. At the centre is verse 8, let us do evil, that good may come, whose damnation is just: "If you preach that sin is not that big an issue in the life of a Christian, your damnation is just." There is none righteous, no, not one, and no fear of God before their eyes. "He does not become your Savior until he becomes your Lord." Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

Romans 2 - The Sinister Use of Religion

Gerry G. Register opens Romans 2 in the Old Testament: Saul, who feared the people and obeyed their voice, and Samuel's answer that to obey is better than sacrifice. The essence of sin is that we do not honour God as God. He names what he calls "the sinister use of religion as a defense mechanism against conviction of sin." Joining the church to escape hell is "easy-peasy, lemon-squeezy," but there is no new man in it. Then the chapter: the goodness of God leadeth thee to repentance; God will render to every man according to his deeds; the doers of the law, not the hearers. Thou that teachest another, teachest thou not thyself? The name of God is blasphemed through professing Christians: "As if Christ's death couldn't produce a better church than that."

Romans 1 - The True Gospel Has the Power to Save the Elect

Paul longed to reach the church at Rome because conversion ends nothing: "It's the beginning, you see, of your growth, of your sanctification." The gospel is the power of God unto salvation, a matter of the heart and not the profession, and only election breaks the enmity of the carnal mind. The wrath of God is revealed against all ungodliness and unrighteousness, churchgoers included; the man not living toward holiness has never been born again: "I'm not afraid to say that." Men no longer carve idols; they make a doctrine, a God "that winks at sin." And Paul sets whisperers, backbiters and the disobedient to parents in the same list.

But "true Christianity is supernatural," and the Spirit keeps His people. Then Isaiah's word, that the heart of this people is waxed gross, their hearts "fat with sin," and the salvation of God sent unto the Gentiles.

Acts 20-26 - The Desire to Be Conformed to Christ's Image Is a Gift That Comes with the Power for It!

Gerry G. Register begins Acts 4 with the separator between the true and the false: "Do you hunger and thirst after righteousness?" That hunger is the Holy Spirit's work in a regenerate heart. Then the chapter: Peter and John taken for preaching through Jesus the resurrection, and the stone which was set at nought of the builders become the head of the corner. The rulers saw the boldness of Peter and John, unlearned and ignorant men, regular blokes who knew how to fish, and took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. They could not deny the miracle, and would not accept it. We cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard; preachers must speak from experience. Then the place shaken, and the multitude of one heart and of one soul.

Acts 3 - The Holy Spirit Enables What the Non Converted Religious Person Cannot and Will Not Do!

Before Acts 3, Gerry G. Register goes back over what the Spirit did with Peter: a scared little mouse at the denial, and at Pentecost, in the fullness of the Spirit, a roaring lion. The Comforter was promised not only to be with us but in us, a well of water springing up, like an artesian well that flows of itself. Ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. Then the man lame from his mother's womb at the gate called Beautiful: in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk, and he goes walking, and leaping, and praising God. Ye killed the Prince of life; repent ye therefore, and be converted. Legalism is obeying to be accepted by God. "But obeying the Scriptures is the evidence that you've been converted."

Christ shows Himself alive by many infallible proofs and commands the apostles not to depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father: ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you. Without that power no man can be a proper witness; to live Christ-like in your own strength is "a fool's errand, and it's nothing but failure." Then Pentecost, tongues given so every man heard in his own language; and Peter's sermon. His question to us: were you pricked in your heart, or was it just a pretty good sermon? Repent, and save yourselves from this untoward generation.

2 Peter 3 - One Is Either in the Flesh or in the Spirit. No Middle Ground

Gerry G. Register opens on the privilege of prayer, coming to the throne of grace and crying Abba, Father, a duty and a form of worship. Then he goes after the doctrine of two kinds of Christians, the committed and the carnal: "What nonsense is that?" Peter says the latter end is worse than the beginning, and it had been better not to have known the way of righteousness than to turn from the holy commandment. The dog is turned to his own vomit again, and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire: not a failure but proof, a return to what they were, unconverted. True Christians want sin out of their lives, and any sin a man is at peace with is a sign the Spirit is not in him. Flesh and Spirit are like oil and water; there is no middle ground.

2 Peter 1:16-2:22 - The Settled Certainty of the Bible Being True

Gerry G. Register opens on Martin Luther's hymn and a right respect for the powers of darkness: the world lives under a constant dread of death it cannot overcome, and the Spirit gives a Christian peace. Then Peter's claim: we have not followed cunningly devised fables, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. Peter is not passing on a story; he was there, in the holy mount, when the voice came from heaven. No prophecy of the Scripture is of any private interpretation; the prophets spoke what God gave them. And the faith God gives puts in a man the settled certainty that the Scriptures are God's word. "I've never looked at the scriptures from the day I was converted in any other way." Then the false teachers, who privily bring in damnable heresies.

2 Peter 1:1-16 - Knowledge without the Spirit Is Useless

Gerry G. Register opens 2 Peter on one of its main thrusts: the warning against false teachers who said a man need not obey, a teaching flooding in even then and now unopposed except by lone voices. Then what he had been enjoying all week: no man gets the true meaning of Scripture by his own wisdom. A man may have ammunition stacked everywhere, a great knowledge of the Scriptures, but the Spirit of God is the rifle, and "without the rifle, the ammunition is no good to anybody." Such knowledge may make a man moral; for eternity it is worthless. From Psalm 119: open Thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of Thy law. Then the difference between morality and virtue: the same deeds, done either to earn something or because the love of God constrains a man.

1 Peter 4-5 - Our Suffering Produces Patience and Holiness

Gerry G. Register opens with Peter's resolve, at the start of his second letter, to keep putting them in remembrance of things they already know. Then 1 Peter 4: he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin, and God uses suffering to keep a Christian focused on His will and off worldly and selfish things. From Luke 9, the voice out of the cloud: This is my beloved Son: hear Him. "And what that really means is obey him." Then the two faiths of James, drawn finer: a false faith rests on human reasoning and never touches the will; a true faith rests on the testimony of the Holy Spirit to the heart. And those who reject the gospel shall give account to Him that judgeth the quick and the dead, punished for the way they have lived.

1 Peter 2-3 - The New Covenant Produces Holiness in Us

Gerry G. Register sharpens the previous week: holiness is pursued under one of two covenants, and which one tells everything. Under the old, a man works at holiness to soothe his conscience or build a record, fails, and lowers the bar. Under the new, God writes His law on the heart, and a man pursues holiness out of love for God. The test: the old-covenant man strives until he runs up against his self-will, his secret sins, his secret idols, and there he stops. If a man excuses his sins because nobody is perfect, "that's a sure sign you've never been born again in the Spirit." Then 1 Peter 2: living stones, a holy priesthood, and Christ the chief corner stone, precious unto them which believe, and a stone of stumbling to the disobedient. Is He precious to you?

1 Peter 1:15-16 - A Holy Life - The Result of True Regeneration

One verse: be ye holy; for I am holy. If a man who claims Christianity is not growing in holiness, Gerry G. Register says, "he has no reason to think that he's truly saved," for holiness is the renewing of God's image in us, the whole reason for regeneration. Most talk of holiness makes it the work of a man's own strength; he answers that it is God's Spirit who makes us holy. He reads at length from John Owen on the Holy Spirit, the best book he has read apart from the Scriptures, and gives Owen's three parts of holiness: an internal renovation of mind, will and affections; a universal compliance with the will of God, with no limit to it; and all the actions of life given to the glory of God. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord.

1 Peter 1-2 - Election - The Foundation of True Christianity

Register opens 1 Peter where Peter does, telling scattered believers who they are before anything else: elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, through sanctification of the Spirit, unto obedience. God knew them to be His before the foundation of the world, because He chose them; the Spirit's sanctification is the separation itself; and all of it runs unto obedience. This, he says, is the foundation of true Christianity. Persecution under Nero was coming, and the trial of their faith is much more precious than gold that perisheth. Then living stones and a holy priesthood: "A spiritual sacrifice is denying self so that you can follow Christ and live unto God in faith and obedience."

James 5 - The Affection of the Heart - Worldly or Spiritual?

The last study in James, on riches. James bids rich men weep and howl, and Gerry G. Register stays with the Lord's own teaching on wealth in Matthew 6 and Matthew 19. Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also, and it is not only money: a man's affection can be misplaced even on his own children, if it rises above God. Everything has to sit under the umbrella of living for God. Then the rich young ruler, who had kept the commandments from his youth and was told to sell what he had, for his god was his riches. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle; a rich man wants everything he has, and Jesus on top of it. That, he says, is why Arminian religion is so popular: "It suits men perfectly."

James 4 - Friendship with the World - God Hates

Gerry G. Register calls James 4 worldliness and pride. Whence come wars and fightings among you? From your own lusts; even the praying is amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts. At the centre stands the friendship of the world, which is enmity with God: its principles, its people, its way of thinking. To be sanctified is to be taken out of the world and placed in the family of God. Then the verse men pass over, the spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy: when a wrong desire rises, the Spirit is right there, and the converted heart thanks Him for it. But He giveth more grace. Submit yourselves therefore to God; resist the devil. "If you think you're a Christian, and you have not submitted yourself to God, given your life over to God, you are not a Christian."

James 3 - A Faith That Cannot Save

Gerry G. Register begins James 3 with something he had seen afresh that week: James sets out two kinds of faith, one vain and no good for salvation, and "the other was vital and living, powerful." Paul and Peter say the same: let not sin reign in your mortal body, and the elect are kept by the power of God, their faith tried with fire. A writer of the 1600s found the professing church swarming with people who kept their sin and still expected heaven. Then the tongue: the bit in the horse's mouth, the helm that turns the ship, a little fire kindling a great matter. The tongue can no man tame; only the Spirit of God gives the check that holds it back. Then the wisdom that is from above, and the fruit of righteousness sown in peace.

James 1-2 - True Faith - Shown by Obedience

The first study in James. Gerry G. Register opens by naming why the book has been fought over: men wanting verification that it is okay to live in sin so grace may abound. Paul tells how a man is justified; James tells what a justified man looks like. "He's not trying to tell us how to be justified." Then chapter 1: count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations, ask wisdom in faith, nothing wavering, and blessed is the man that endureth temptation, for when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin. Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only; the perfect law of liberty is for men who are at liberty, not a law to be saved by. Then chapter 2: can that faith save him? Works means obedience to God. The devils also believe, and tremble.

Hebrews 13 - "Outside the Camp"

The last study in Hebrews. Gerry G. Register reviews the book's argument: leave behind the old covenant and every work, for by grace we are saved, and the true church is a society of the elect of God. What He begins, He finishes. From Hebrews 12:12: lift up the hands which hang down, follow peace with all men and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord, and look diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God. The neglect of that diligence, he says, has led to the ruin of the church. Hearers and studiers of the word are not doers, and confronted with Christ men either follow Him or turn from Him. Then Hebrews 13, going forth unto Him without the camp, and the sacrifice of praise continually: "How do you praise God continually in your heart and live in sin?"

Hebrews 12 - "Quit You like Men"

The third week in Hebrews 12. Chastening, Gerry G. Register says, comes from God's hand for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness, and where there is chastening there is sin to be removed. His picture from almost fifty years: a man converted is set in a box, and when he grows comfortable leaning on its walls, God begins to turn the screws, until the world loses its taste. No chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness. "Now, it's interesting that the fruit of righteousness is peace." Lift up the hands which hang down; quit you like men; follow peace with all men, and holiness. Then Sinai and mount Sion, the blood that speaketh better things than that of Abel, and our God a consuming fire.

Hebrews 12 - God Has a Purpose for Our Persecution, Suffering and Pain

Gerry G. Register goes back over Hebrews 12 before going on. The cloud of witnesses is a stadium full of the faithful of chapter 11, watching the race; lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset us, for sin excused keeps a man from persevering. Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who endured the cross for the joy set before Him, the joy of saving the elect. The secret to enduring, he says, is self-denial. Then chastening again: whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, for our profit, that we might be partakers of His holiness. Lift up the hands which hang down. See that ye refuse not Him that speaketh: "unless you're being obedient to God's voice and his word, you're just kidding yourself." Only the things which cannot be shaken remain.

Register opens with the hymn just sung, fiery trials that only consume the dross and refine the gold, then reads the story of Barak from Judges 4: nine hundred iron chariots thrown into a panic, and Sisera slain by Jael, a woman in a tent, so that the honour went to God. Then the rest of Hebrews 11, those who subdued kingdoms and those sawn asunder, of whom the world was not worthy, who received not the promise. What did they lack? "They lacked Christ being in them": the new covenant and the Spirit poured out in the heart. So chapter 12: lay aside every weight, looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith, who endured the cross, despising the shame. And whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth; without chastisement, ye are bastards, and not sons.

Hebrews 11:32-34 - God Limited Gideon's Army to 300 Men. Why?

The time would fail me, Paul says, to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and the rest, and Gerry G. Register sends his hearers to Judges to read them. He stops on Gideon: God sent the fearful home, then sifted the rest at the water, until three hundred men destroyed the Midianites, so that all would know it was the work of God. Through faith men stopped the mouths of lions and quenched the violence of fire. "It didn't take the fire away"; it took its power. "It's the same exact faith" for us, he says, appropriated differently: the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds, bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ. Then Ephesians 6: be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.

Hebrews 11:24-31 - True Saving Faith Always Obeys God's Will - That's Why God Must and Does Give It to His True Children

Faith is given of God and works in the heart, Gerry G. Register says, and it longs to be proved: "Faith is dying to be tested." Moses, when he was come to years, at the height of his power, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter, choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season. Faith is not irrational; it weighs both sides and chooses God, esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures of Egypt, and endures as seeing Him who is invisible. Then Romans 8 and Philippians 3 on suffering with Christ, and the Passover, the Red Sea, Jericho and Rahab, each an act of faith. At the Red Sea Israel had no horses and no chariots. "All they had was God."

Hebrews 11:17-23 - In the Trials of Life Our Faith or Absence of It Is Revealed

The trials of our faith are the touchstone, Gerry G. Register says: the flat stone that showed by its streak whether a piece of gold was pure. Trials do not make faith; they reveal what is there, to the world and to ourselves. By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac, overcoming every reason the flesh could offer, and God counted his willingness as the deed. Isaac blessed Jacob; Jacob, a dying, blessed the sons of Joseph; Joseph gave commandment concerning his bones; Moses' parents were not afraid of the king's commandment. From 1 Peter, the trial of your faith is more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire. And the first thing faith does, he says, is that "it gives you a dissatisfaction with the things of the world."

Hebrews 11, Gerry G. Register says, answers a definition of our day in which "faith only deals with eternal things." True faith works here and now, in obedience. These all died in faith, not having received the promises, and he takes the verse in its order: they saw them afar off, were persuaded of them, embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. A pilgrim does not put down roots to become something great here; faith mortifies the love of the world. Christ came not to send peace but a sword, and whoever forsakes not all that he hath cannot be His disciple. They that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country, an heavenly, wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He hath prepared for them a city.

Hebrews 11:1-12 - The Holy Spirit Does in Us What We Cannot Do for Ourselves - Enables Obedience

The eleventh chapter of Hebrews, Gerry G. Register says, is the essence of Christianity, and a wrong idea of faith is the plague of our day. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen: it produces reality in the heart and life. Abel offered a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, who devised what he thought good enough. Faith mixes with truth as a powder with water: "It mixes it to be one substance, so that becomes you." Without faith it is impossible to please Him, and he that cometh to God diligently seeks Him. Noah, moved with fear, prepared an ark and condemned the world; Abraham went out, not knowing whither he went, looking for a city whose builder and maker is God. And that faith, he says, is God's gift, never the flesh's.

Hebrews 10 - God's Gift of an Eternal Perspective

In Hebrews 10, Gerry G. Register sets the old covenant beside the new once more. The law, having a shadow of good things to come, could never make the comers thereunto perfect; in those sacrifices there was a remembrance again made of sins every year. A body hast thou prepared me: Christ came to do Thy will, O God, and by one offering hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified, His law written in their hearts. So the conscience is purged, and we draw near. "Nobody enters into the throne room of God unless they have a true heart." Then the warning: to sin wilfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth is to tread under foot the Son of God. He closes on patience under persecution: the just shall live by faith, seeing everything from eternity and not from the world.

Hebrews 9 - Christ and the New Covenant - A More Excellent Way

Before chapter 9, Gerry G. Register returns to the last two weeks: without holiness no man shall see the Lord, and holiness is obedience. "There are only two covenants." Israel continued not in the old, so God made a new one to be sure of a people: I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts, where the enmity and corruption sit. Then the tabernacle: the holiest of all, the high priest going in once a year and not without blood, gifts that could not make him perfect as pertaining to the conscience, and the tables of the covenant in the ark. Christ entered in once by His own blood, which purges the conscience from dead works to serve the living God. Unto them that look for Him shall He appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Hebrews 7-8 - Melchizedek and the Power of an Endless Life

Taking Hebrews 7 and 8 largely through the Living Bible, Gerry G. Register follows Paul's argument for Melchizedek, king of Salem and priest of the most high God, who blessed Abraham and received tithes of him, Levi paying in Abraham. Christ came of Judah, not Levi, made a priest not after the law of a carnal commandment but after the power of an endless life, able to save them to the uttermost. God found fault with the old covenant, which never worked; the new one writes His laws in the mind and on the heart. "The evidence of election is that you've been changed into the new man." Without that change, he says, a man has religious baggage and no salvation. And as in boot camp, we are made into something before we are of any use.

Hebrews 6 - "Enlightened" yet Not True Regeneration

In Hebrews 6 Paul turns from milk to strong meat for men who never used the milk, and adds, this will we do, if God permit. Gerry G. Register takes the reason in order: those once enlightened, who have tasted of the heavenly gift and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost. Tasting is not eating, and nothing is said of their regeneration. Matthew 7 shows men who prophesied and cast out devils in His name, to whom He will profess, I never knew you. "Has he professed you? Does he know you?" The earth that drinks in the rain and bears thorns is nigh unto cursing, and Paul is persuaded only of things that accompany salvation. Then Philippians 3, all things counted but dung to win Christ, and the hope we have as an anchor of the soul, sure and stedfast, within the veil.

Hebrews 5 - Truth Must Be and Will Be Engrafted into the Elect by the Spirit's Power and Assistance

Israel heard God's promises and was dull of hearing, and the word never became part of them. "Truth has no benefit to you unless it becomes you." Men wall it out for the sake of some sin they will not give up, and remain hearers only. Then the chapter: an high priest touched with the feeling of our infirmities, a throne of grace where help is found in time of temptation, and Christ, though a Son, learning obedience by the things which He suffered. He became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey Him, and they obey because they have been saved, not in order to be.

If Joshua had given them rest, God would not afterward have spoken of another day, so it is not Canaan, nor only heaven: he that is entered into His rest hath ceased from his own works, as God did from His. The blood of Christ purges the conscience from dead works, and a man stops trying to prove to himself that he is saved. Then verse 12: the word of God is quick and powerful. "This Bible is not alive. Christ is alive." He opens the closet where every secret sin is hid.

Then the warning out of the wilderness: to day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts; take heed lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief. They could not enter in because of unbelief, and unbelief and disobedience go together. "So you can't separate faith from obedience." The religious man is a ship stalled in the doldrums; the true Christian is a deep, wide river that nothing stops.

Hebrews 1-2 - Your Will over God's Will - The Surest Sign of Unbelief

So the believer is at rest, and the professor who frets over every detail has not entered into it. Christ is set above the angels, and His enemies are made His footstool: men who love darkness rather than light and will not let go of their sin. "Until your spirit, until your will is broken by the Spirit of God, you're still in unbelief." Then chapter 2, how shall we escape if we neglect so great salvation, and the Captain of our salvation made perfect through sufferings.

Register goes back first to peace be unto you, spoken into the disciples' fear: turmoil stirred by the devil or by circumstances is not of Christ, and the peace the Spirit brings with Him is an evidence of His work. Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed. He tells how, as a young Christian, he sat in a field at Bible school and prayed: "Please make me a man of faith. Make me to be one who trusts you." Then the disciples fishing all night and catching nothing, the net full at His word, and the question put to Peter three times, lovest thou me? Feed my sheep.

Preached on Easter Sunday, but not as a once-a-year tribute: Gerry G. Register asks why the cross and the rising happened at all, and what they mean for those called unto Him. Through the trial he shows who was really in charge: thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above. Christ bore His own cross, and so the cross He asks us to take up daily is "that instrument of death to self." The title over the cross, the seamless coat, the bones not broken: prophecy fulfilled in every detail, and seen by almost no one. Then the empty tomb, and the reason for it all, the change of nature Christ meant when He told Nicodemus, ye must be born again.

John 18 - God's Kingdom Is Not of This World

The arrest in the garden, which Gerry G. Register reads for the sovereignty in it: Judas knew the place, and everything was arranged by God. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, and the devil supplies his opposition with all it needs, yet in the very thing he pushed for his own power was broken. Christ, knowing all that should come upon Him, went forth to meet them, and so God will work in our hearts "to actually step toward it and say thy will be done not my own." I am He, and they went backward and fell to the ground, then got up and carried on, so blind is natural man. And Peter draws his sword, sincere and completely wrong, a picture of "Peter being out of step with the Lord."

Christ's prayer to His Father at the end of His time on earth, which Gerry G. Register calls precious for showing His heart. He gives eternal life to as many as the Father has given Him, and this is life eternal, that they might know Thee: a personal, intimate knowledge of God. "Actually, they were always yours even before you gave them to me." Election was in the will of God before the world began, and that is why the world hates it: it takes justification out of man's hands. I pray not for the world, but for them which Thou hast given me. He likens the effectual call to a magnet drawing iron out of the ground: "Like a nail to a magnet, there's no resistance at all." And those who are drawn are kept, that they may be one, as We are.

Christ prepares His disciples for what lies ahead with the Spirit He is about to send, the Comforter. Gerry G. Register sets it in the spiritual warfare, for we wrestle not against flesh and blood: "It's not that mean boss of mine, you see. It's the devil." He retells a lesson from Bible school, given by a former tank commander: in battle, stay in your tank. Then his own version, a child curled safe on the couch, running back into Christ whenever fear comes. They shall put you out of the synagogues, because they have not known the Father nor me, and a heart not fixed toward God is something only God can fix. When the Spirit of truth is come, He will guide you into all truth.

Through Romans 1, 1 Corinthians and Colossians to Christ in you, the hope of glory. Then the true vine and the husbandman. The fruit is the fruit of the Spirit, internal character flowing out like a fountain, and every branch that beareth fruit He purgeth, that it may bring forth more fruit. A second week in John 14, begun in Genesis: darkness was upon the face of the deep, until the Spirit moved and God said, let there be light. Then the plague on Egypt, darkness which might be felt, while the children of Israel had light in their dwellings. Gerry G. Register takes it as a picture of the regenerate and the unregenerate. The Egyptians' eyes still worked; there was simply no light. So with the natural man: "They're stuck. They don't see a thing in terms of spiritual truth." That is why the world cannot receive the Spirit of truth, because it seeth Him not, neither knoweth Him, which he reads as: the world does not appreciate Him. And again the refrain he counts through the chapter: if ye love me, keep my commandments.

John 14 - When I Go I Will Send Another Comforter Which Will Be Better for You

Some of Christ's last words to His disciples: I must go away, but I will send another Comforter. Gerry G. Register calls it the key to everything acceptable to God. The Holy Spirit is God's agent to do His work, and work not done by Him is not God's work. "This is the issue of our day. This is where the war and the battleground is." Christ is the way, and no man cometh unto the Father but by Him. Five times in this short discourse He ties love to obedience: if ye love me, keep my commandments. A reformation without regeneration is only a new coat of paint. The Spirit who dwelt with them would be in them, and so in chapter 16: it is expedient for you that I go away.

Christ washes the disciples' feet, and Peter objects: what I do thou knowest not now, but thou shalt know hereafter. Gerry G. Register takes the hereafter as Pentecost. Nothing of spiritual value happens apart from the Holy Spirit's work, and the same Peter who fumbled here preached with power once he was filled. Peter's failures are no licence: sin is the whole reason Christ came, and the reason the Spirit is given. "The Holy Spirit is in us working towards the purposes of God or He is not. There's no middle ground to this." God is glorified in the creation of the new man. Then Judas goes out into the night, the new commandment is given, that ye love one another, and Peter boasts before the cock crows.

Lazarus is sick, and Christ waits two days where He is. Gerry G. Register reads it, with the man born blind before it, as a lesson in God's sovereignty: His hand is in everything that happens to His people, and there is a step-by-step plan He causes them to walk in. "And so it's a very restful place to be." Anxiety and worry are not fruits of the Spirit. At the grave Christ is moved with indignation at unbelief. Then Lazarus, four days dead, is called forth and unbound, a picture of the effectual call and the new man, the old grave clothes taken off, "and there stands Lazarus." Mary's costly ointment set against Judas's talk of the poor shows true worship beside religious works, and it closes on the corn of wheat that must fall into the ground and die.

The man blind from birth, kept in that condition his whole life for the moment Christ would pass by: Gerry G. Register calls it a display of God's sovereignty in His providence. It happened on the Sabbath, as so often, because Christ Himself is the true Sabbath, our perpetual rest from working for salvation. Along the way he turns to the Reformation, to Luther, Knox and the martyrs who stood on the just shall live by faith. Then the man's confession, which Gerry calls the cry of anyone born of the Spirit: "I was blind and now I see. I didn't do anything. I didn't make myself see." Last, the Good Shepherd: My sheep hear My voice and follow Me, and no man shall pluck them out of My hand.

From the woman taken in adultery Gerry G. Register draws the last line: go, and sin no more. "So it's not a suggestion, really. It's more of a command." The reason for our justification is that God might sanctify us here and prepare us to receive our Lord at His return. It is never perfection, but a life that looks, acts, thinks and speaks differently, so that those around a man know it. Then I am the light of the world, and the two fathers: ye are of your father the devil, and he that is of God heareth God's words. "Anyone whose father is God listens gladly to the words of God." Gladly is the key word. There is no separation between being a disciple and being a Christian, and if the Son shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

The sin nature remains, but the new birth lays out a life no longer in bondage to sin, with power in the blood and the help of the Spirit. It is not about perfection. The bread of life, and the eating of His flesh, speak of a oneness with Christ far past the argument over Saviour and Lord: to be a servant is one thing, "It's another thing to be one." No man can come to me except the Father draw him, said three times, and at the third many of His disciples went back. Then the feast, and if any man thirst, let him come unto me and drink.

The first study in John. Before reading a verse, Gerry G. Register puts one condition over the whole book: unless regeneration is truly accomplished, none of it has any eternal significance. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word is Christ Himself. "This Bible is not Christ. This Bible is the record of Christ." It is the sword the Spirit must pick up and use; without Him it is only an intellectual exercise, ever learning and never coming to the knowledge of the truth. As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of God, and a man can believe without being born again, which is why churches are full of the sincere and unchanged. Then John the Baptist's witness: behold the Lamb of God, the same is He which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.

The Spirit's Power - We Know Nothing until the Holy Spirit Reveals It to the Heart

Gerry G. Register looks back to the love of God shed abroad in our hearts and to justification as God's own free judgment, then gives the morning to the Spirit: in the making of a Christian, in the preaching that reaches one, and in the keeping of one afterward. A new heart also will I give you, and I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes: "There's a causing there." That is not doing our best to try. He reads Spurgeon at length on the preacher's dependence on the Holy Ghost. Ye are our epistle, written with the Spirit of the living God in fleshly tables of the heart. The Spirit will not accompany a gospel that leaves out the new man: "Mark that down." He sees his calling in the separating of wheat and tares, and closes on living by faith.

The Love of God - Demonstrated to the Elect in the Death and Suffering of Christ

Register returns to Jacob and Esau, chosen before either had done any good or evil, and narrows Romans 9 to one line, Jacob have I loved: "The consequence of that one verse and the reality of it has affected everything." Then Romans 5: the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost, not the theory that God loves me but "the actual love that exists in God." That love fulfils the law and answers how to love a neighbour, and it cannot be done in the flesh. The first and great commandment is missing from the gospel of our day, for it asks for the very thing we will not give: "we do want heaven but we do not want that." In 1 John, when the love of God comes in, the love of the world goes out. Has it been shed abroad in your heart?

Preach the Word and Defend the Truth

Gerry G. Register returns to common grace, which stops at the mind, and says plainly how he sees his calling: to equip the saints and "bring them to a more ready position for Christ's return." Through the sower's soils, the wayside, the stony ground received with joy, the thorns of this world's cares, he asks how good ground can come to be in a heart dead in trespasses and sins. After the Reformation effectual grace was the first thing attacked, and the denial of man's inability "is the beginning of all mischief." Then 2 Timothy 4: preach the word, reprove, rebuke, exhort, for the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine and shall be turned unto fables, into fiction. And Romans 9: Jacob and Esau, that the purpose of God according to election might stand.

Common Grace vs. Effectual Grace - A Great Difference

Gerry G. Register sets out common grace, the Spirit's working in all the world and upon every man. The Lord placed the sand for the bound of the sea by a perpetual decree, and His restraint "keeps us from experiencing hell itself while we're still on earth." Christ upholds all things by the word of His power; the king's heart is in the hand of the Lord. That same influence, he says, is the main cause of religion: a man convicted by the truth accepts Jesus out of fear of hell and tries to repent, but the carnal mind is enmity against God. "Truth cannot change the heart." Without the effectual call of God, "you've just got religion." In Romans 1 God gave them up, and he sees that restraint being drawn back in our day.

Register begins at the law, thou shalt not covet, and calls discontent a real evidence of the flesh: where contentment is lacking, either God is about to teach it or the Spirit is not there at all. Paul had learned in whatsoever state he was therewith to be content, both to be full and to be hungry, for Christ satisfies the heart: "He will give you a satisfaction and a fullness as if you had it when you don't have it." My God shall supply all your need. Godliness with contentment is great gain, and even a slave was to count his master worthy of honour. In Numbers 11 the people wept for the fish and leeks of Egypt, and He gave them their request, but sent leanness into their soul. "One thing the Lord hates is a complainer."

Our Justification - God's Declaration of Our Sanctification

Gerry G. Register holds one distinction for the hour: justification and sanctification are two separate things, and every other religion has combined them. Justification is God's declaration, a change of status that has nothing to do with us. He could not do it out of thin air, so in His Son He bore the penalty, and raised Him again for our justification. Sanctification follows as His work in us: "He justified us for the sole intent to sanctify us." Slide any part back and Christ shall profit you nothing, and that includes trusting your own faith in place of Christ's work. Outward morality is not sanctification: "it's like putting on clean clothes but not having a clean heart." The power is God working in us, not a Spirit "sitting on the sofa having a coke."

The Holy Spirit's Involvement - Essential

Gerry G. Register reads 1 Corinthians 1 and 2 to show how God works. Paul was called by the will of God, and the Corinthians waited for the coming of our Lord: are we of that mind? The world by wisdom knew not God, so it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe, which answers why anyone preaches if God elects. Not many wise, not many noble are called, that no flesh should glory in His presence. Paul came in weakness and fear because man's wisdom could deliver a message and "I might get decisions," not conversions, leaving a church spinning plates to keep it standing. The natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit; the spiritual man judgeth all things and answers to God alone: "I won't be judged by you."

A Whiff of Godliness - But No Spiritual Power

Gerry G. Register closes the weeks on warfare with the Spirit at the centre. At Pentecost the tongues were a platform, and God stood Peter up with power to preach: "It's not enough just to have a message." Then 1 Samuel 17, read slowly. Delivered from the lion and the bear, David had courage for Goliath; he would not wear Saul's armour, for "Saul is using man's traditional ways to try to do God's work"; and he ran toward the Philistine and drew the giant's own sword. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. From James, temptation is not sin until lust hath conceived, and friendship of the world is unfaithfulness. The modern church has "a whiff of godliness" and no power to live righteously; the weapon is the truth as the Spirit administers it.

Register says the devil has very limited power over Christians, yet holiness is fought for: the Spirit fights against the flesh every day, and a man unaware of that warfare in himself, he says plainly, is not born again. The posture comes from Philippians 2, lowliness of mind and Christ who made Himself of no reputation: "He was willing to be nobody." Work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God which worketh in you. The fight is not with people. We wrestle not against flesh and blood, and when we argue to prove our point, "the whole while the devil is laughing at us." The armour is already ours and the word is stand, above all the shield of faith, itself a gift. So fight I, not as one that beateth the air.

First what it is not: knowledge, profession, zeal for church, morality, or good works, for "You can paint yourself up and down, one end to the other with good works." It is desire and attitude, living no longer unto yourself but unto Him who died for you; and practically it is separation from a world whose fashion, music and newscasts work on the flesh, where what matters is the desire behind the wanting. He justified us to sanctify us, and once regeneration takes place, "you're on the God train now." Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin, for His seed remaineth in him. The world says, "I hear it, but I do not see it." Be not deceived; God is not mocked.

Fruit unto Holiness - We Will Have It

Gerry G. Register reads Romans 6 again for where fruit unto holiness comes from: engrafted into Christ, a man bears fruit only by the life coming up through the branch. In Matthew 7 the Lord never disputes the doctrine or the works of those who say Lord, Lord. He never knew them, and He calls their works evil "because they're man produced." Galatians 5 sets the works of the flesh, idolatry being mostly money and success, against the fruit of the Spirit, which is fruit unto holiness, fruit unto separation; and since faith is in that list, "I insist faith must be given to us." By one offering He hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified; the faith of Hebrews 11 does something; and whom the Lord loveth He chasteneth, that we might be partakers of His holiness.

God's Power in Us Is Not Passive, but Active to Conform Us to Christ

Gerry G. Register asks the question that follows from Romans 6: "What causes us being free from the law to obey?" First, God's purpose. He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him, not for anything He foresaw in us, to the praise of the glory of His grace; and Christ gave Himself for the church to present it without spot or wrinkle. Then the power: the exceeding greatness of His power to usward, the same that raised Christ from the dead. "It's not passive. It's aggressive." The love of Christ constraineth us, and faith worketh by love. Our thinking, imagination and emotions are not to be yielded to the devil. And the religious man caught in between? "What a miserable place to be."

Gerry G. Register goes back over Romans 6 on purpose and shows that almost every verb is in the past tense: made free from sin, become the servants of righteousness, put on the new man, crucified the flesh. "It's complete. It's done in us." Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound, and grace is supernatural over sin; taken out of Adam and put into Christ, continuing in sin becomes unthinkable. We do not try to abide in the vine; we are in Him. Then the first thing given us to do: reckon ye yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God. "He's basically saying be who you are." Sin shall not have dominion over you, and Christ delivers them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Gerry G. Register says death to self is "not a process" but an event, and names the disagreement: some notable commentators read Romans 6 as progressive, which lets a man say nobody's perfect. Sanctification is progressive; the death is not. First Romans 5: the love of God shed abroad in our hearts, and where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. Then Paul stops, knowing what men will do with free grace. How shall we that are dead to sin live any longer therein? Baptized means placed into, like white cloth pushed down into a bowl of dye; it is union with Christ. Getting this wrong has built "a safe haven and a safe harbor for tares and religious unconverted people." To whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are.

Death to Self - Alive unto God's Will

Gerry G. Register calls it the one most important thing in salvation: death to self. Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone; if any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross. None of the Beatitudes is possible in the flesh, so the church has found a way "to approximate these things," trying hard to live as Jesus taught. But a man cannot put himself to death; the heart of stone, which is self, is taken out at regeneration. The dying is once, the taking up of the cross daily. Has that work been done in your heart? Following the confessions and catechisms in place of the Spirit is "spiritual laziness." Only a man dead to himself can esteem others better than himself, for it is God which worketh in you.

Christianity - The New Heart and the New Man

Gerry G. Register says Christianity is essentially of the heart, so what the Scriptures describe can be done only with a new heart; otherwise it is the letter, and the letter killeth. If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: "This is not ho-hum." Can the world see it? Like a compass needle hunting for north, the whole bent is the right way, and true north comes when Christ returns. We are ambassadors for Christ, yet religion has cleverly removed the demands of discipleship. In Romans 7 and 8, no condemnation to them which walk not after the flesh but after the Spirit, and no man walks so apart from the Spirit in him. Intellectual Calvinism "doesn't mean a thing to me." Set your affection on things above; they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh.

"It Has Been Said of Old" - Tradition Has Replaced Truth

Gerry G. Register goes on in Matthew 5 from verse 21: it was said by them of old time, thou shalt not kill, but anger without a cause is judged too. There is a spirit behind the law, and God is always looking at the heart. Ye are they which justify yourselves before men, but God knoweth your hearts: outward religion feeds self-righteousness and the wish to be thought spiritual. Tradition, man's attempt to do what God wants, made the commandment of God of none effect, and in vain they worship. And "men love to have rules to follow," for rules give self-justification. The whited sepulchres were beautiful outward, and he asks whether a heart is "just dead men's bones." No man can come unto Christ except it were given unto him of the Father.

Jesus Christ a Stumbling Block. Man Will Find His Own Way of Salvation

Gerry G. Register takes Matthew 5:17: Christ came not to destroy the law but to fulfil it, and except your righteousness exceed that of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter the kingdom. Theirs was outward; His is of the heart. The Pharisees had the types and the prophets and should have known Him, yet stumbled over Him, and the modern church has done the same, casting Christ aside in His true form because it will not die to self. To profess Him and not obey His words is "the most ridiculous thing I can even imagine." The new covenant writes the law in the heart; by the washing of regeneration, "We had heart surgery." Religion without the Spirit is a stagnant cistern, or a rowboat turning in circles: "a religious spin."

The False Church - Its Counterfeit

Gerry G. Register calls this perhaps one of the most important teachings he has given. With Nicodemus the Lord went straight to the point: except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God, and the wind bloweth where it listeth. In John 3:16, so means in this manner, and believeth is present tense, true of those born of the Spirit. God's view of sin is what believism leaves out: ye are of your father the devil. In John 10 the sheep know His voice and a stranger will they not follow, yet he sees churches "following the wolves." The devil turned counterfeiter, changing faith and repentance so a man thinks "I can have God in my sin too." Repentance, as at Pentecost, is giving up the mastery of your own life.

Salt and Light - The Holy Spirit at Work in Us

Gerry G. Register takes up salt and light, why the Lord made His people as the Beatitudes describe. Salt preserves, holding back the rot; it gives flavour to a bland world; and it stings, so that people who know something of a Christian modify their language around him. We are the light of the world because the light of the world is in us, and the single eye, set on God and not on mammon, fills the whole body with light. In John 3 men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil: "You're not going to keep your sin and believe in Christ too." He that doeth truth cometh to the light, glad for God's work in him to be seen. Charles Wesley's hymn of the chained prisoner set free is his picture of conversion, and "Anything less than that is not conversion."

How to Rejoice in Persecution - His Grace Is Sufficient

Gerry G. Register draws a hard line between persecution for Christ's sake and persecution sought for its own sake, where pride takes the credit. It comes first in the family: I came not to send peace, but a sword, and a man's foes shall be they of his own household, true only where regeneration has made a man genuinely different. How can a Christian rejoice in it? First the reward: God "turns everything in your life into a victory," and "It's a win-win situation for the Christian." Then the affections set on things above, for ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. We may not retaliate, and the devil will settle for resentment; the Spirit takes us past both, to mourn for them. He closes on treasure in earthen vessels: persecuted, but not forsaken.

Persecution - As Christ Was, so Shall We

Gerry G. Register takes the persecuted of Matthew 5 and uses it "as a plumb line," to see whom this happens to and why the church of our day does not see it. John 15 gives the answer: if ye were of the world, the world would love his own. The church is so like the world that the world sees no difference, while regeneration makes a true Christian a different man. Yet we are not to parade our Christianity, lest the motive be to be seen of men. From 2 Corinthians 2, we are a sweet savour of Christ, of life unto life to some and of death unto death to others; from Philippians 1, adversaries are an evident token of perdition. The pride of life is what gets hurt, and the Spirit deals with it until a man sees he is nothing and "Christ is everything."

Peacemakers - Selfless, with the Hope That Others Might Have the Peace of God That You Do

Gerry G. Register takes the peacemakers of Matthew 5 and begins with God, not with us: the God of peace, that brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus. Being justified by faith we have peace with God, and the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost: "That's the key to everything." Hatred, strife and envyings stand in the same list as adultery and idolatry. In Ephesians 2 Christ is our peace, who hath broken down the middle wall of partition and slain the enmity, between Jew and Gentile and between man and God; Philippians 2 gives the pattern of His humility. So the peacemaker is approachable, "you have no hidden agenda," wanting only that others have his peace. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be owned as God's children.

Pure in Heart - A Ravenous Desire to Please God

Gerry G. Register calls the effort to make your own heart pure "a loser's game," and goes to Ezekiel for the answer: a new heart also will I give you, the heart of stone taken out, and I will put my Spirit within you and cause you to walk in my statutes. The pure heart has a single desire for God's will: "There's no hidden folds in it." And its working is simple: "what the heart wants, the will follows." Without regeneration, religiosity, church faithfulness and good works only make a man a hypocrite, professing Christ and following his own will. Ananias and Sapphira kept back part of the price, the evidence of self and an unchanged heart. What comes with the new heart is a ravenous desire to please God. Is that your one desire?

In Christ We Have No Rights. Nothing Is about Us - For Me to Live Is Christ

Gerry G. Register reads Ephesians 4:32 and the unforgiving servant of Matthew 18, forgiven ten thousand talents and taking his fellow servant by the throat over a hundred pence. Much of the hour is a reading from Martyn Lloyd-Jones on the merciful, with his own comments: a Christian is something before he does anything; grace meets men in their sins, mercy in their misery; and the promise does not mean forgiveness is earned by forgiving, for the man who knows he is forgiven will forgive. Then he presses it home: "When we are in Christ, we have no rights." Giving up our rights, taking wrong we did not deserve, and pitying others as slaves of sin is a witness the world cannot explain. Father, forgive them; lay not this sin to their charge.

Meekness - A Right Estimate of Yourself

Gerry G. Register reads the Beatitudes through and insists they are characteristics of Christians, impossible to the natural man because contrary to his nature. Meekness gets the most time: "Meekness, correctly understood, is to have a right estimate of yourself." In the flesh dwelleth no good thing, and pride, the devil's own sin, is its opposite; meek and lowly in heart is how the Lord described Himself. Churches that grow by worldly means forget that "only God can do God's work," and much that looks spiritual is busy work comforting pride. Mourning, mercy and a pure heart follow, the last possible only to the regenerate. He closes on the salt that hath lost its savour and the city set on an hill that cannot be hid.

The Churches Have Built the Wide Way

Gerry G. Register takes Paul's closing words to the Corinthians, be perfect, be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace, one at a time. For the first he goes to the Beatitudes: not goals to strive after; they are true of Christians because the Spirit makes them real. Paul was ready to exercise the church discipline no one will exercise now. The wide way, he says, is not the world: it is "the wide way that the churches have provided," a broad road of profession. Then Romans 8: foreknown, predestinated, called, justified, glorified, predestinated to be conformed to the image of His Son. Nothing shall separate us from the love of Christ; we are more than conquerors, "Not just getting by." Toward the unconverted, pity rather than criticism.

Dead to Sin and a Slave to Obedience

Gerry G. Register begins in 1 Peter 3 with the household: the meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price, and the husband's heavy charge to love and lead as Christ loved the church. Be ready to give an answer to every man, with meekness and fear. Then Romans 6, where the weight falls: shall we continue in sin? The old man is crucified with Christ and the power of sin broken, and the Christian "wants to not do it more than his temptation to do it is." That is no line between a super Christian and a normal one, but between a Christian and a fake. The modern church has made these truths "optional, made them goals to achieve." Converting a man saturated with sin took the power that raised Christ from the dead, and makes him a peculiar person.

Christ's University - The School of Suffering!

Gerry G. Register continues with what is true of the regenerate, looking first to Christ's coming from the end of 2 Peter, then reading 1 Peter nearly through. Trials test faith as fire tests gold, and faith is more precious to God than gold: suffering is Christ's university, where He takes us to school in patience and dependence. Joy unspeakable cannot be produced by man, yet to most it is "just a theory." Love is stated as already true of the cleansed soul, and "loving the unlovable is what real love is all about." Holiness is separation from the world as we grow in grace. As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, crying for it as a baby cries for milk, and let our lives show how He called us out of darkness into His marvellous light.

What's Been Both Imputed and Imparted to Us in Christ

Gerry G. Register sets the sermon on one contrast: "most people that have accepted Jesus as their savior have a theory of Christianity," with no experiential reality of what Scripture says is theirs. From 1 Corinthians 1 he takes a verse he calls one of the most complete in Scripture: Christ is made unto us wisdom, righteousness, sanctification and redemption. Righteousness is imputed, because Christ obeyed the law in every point; what is imputed in righteousness is imparted in sanctification, as we become now what we already are in Christ. Election excludes boasting, and that is its comfort: "if I had nothing to do with achieving it, then I have nothing to do with completing it." Outward reform must never stand in for a changed heart.

The Holy Spirit - The Earnest of Our Redemption

Gerry G. Register sets the necessity of the Holy Spirit against a teaching that makes church participation critical to final justification and leaves the Spirit no role after conversion. The New Testament churches often met in a house, and the big churches exist, he says, because doctrines were made to cater to the flesh, when the way is narrow and few there be that find it. From John 6: no man can come to Christ except the Father draw him, and many disciples walked away when they heard it. The Spirit is the earnest of our redemption, not a pledge but money put down to show intent, God's guarantee that He will finish. "Christian life is something God does. It's not something we do." He closes on Paul's test at the end of 2 Corinthians, and on staying in the Word.

Our Union with Christ - Covers Everything!

Gerry G. Register comes at Christian freedom from underneath: it rests on union with Christ, made by the Spirit in regeneration, not at baptism and not kept up by covenant faithfulness. He reads Galatians 1 and 2 nearly through: another gospel which is not another, Paul withstanding Peter to his face, and by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. "That covers everything." Then the life he now lives, by the faith of the Son of God: "It's not our puny fleshly weak faith." Christ's faith, righteousness and holiness are imputed, and the Spirit makes real in us what is already ours. The visible church, full of the unconverted, is not the church Christ is building. He closes on Christ as our satisfaction in every situation.

The Miracle of Regeneration - New Heart, New Nature, New Will, New Man

Gerry G. Register takes up Christian freedom from Galatians 4 and 5, resting it on regeneration. Ishmael was the son Abraham got by his own work, Isaac the son of promise, and God had the slave wife and her son sent away, the separation of faith from works. Put yourself under works and the question never ends: "How much is enough?" Against teaching that neutralises the change of heart, he insists that "regeneration is a miracle, a supernatural thing": a new heart, will and nature, and then faith runs to God as fast as it can. Among the works of the flesh he stops on wrong doctrine, which comes wherever the Spirit does not interpret. They that are Christ's have crucified the flesh, and its desires, though they still stir, are helpless.

The Visible Church Has Failed to Be a Good Steward of the True Gospel

Gerry G. Register asks what it takes to grow a church God's way, and answers that "we have failed to be good stewards of the gospel in this country." The devil threw the switch in the railroad yard, and the train ran off onto a believism that suits the flesh: make a decision, with none of the evidence Scripture says will be there. He warns against parking in Romans 7 and follows Paul's question into Romans 8. God purposed to save a people and purify them, and preaching is His means; He reaches into this world and pulls out His own like rough diamonds, polishing them into the image of Christ. And the fruit of the Spirit humbles: "You find me a preacher that's proud of anything, I'll find you a preacher that's not saved."

God Saves to Sanctify and Conform Us to the Image of Christ Our LORD

The first recording in the archive, and, as Gerry G. Register says at the outset, the first time he had ever stood behind a pulpit. He sets it under the parable of the wheat and the tares, and the Lord dividing them before the end. Beneath it is the new birth: the Spirit is like the wind, and you cannot tell where it comes from, but you can see the rustling of the leaves. That is the only evidence there is. A decision, a baptism and joining a church are not conversion; the fruit of the Spirit is. "You might have free will to choose a green shirt instead of a red shirt. But when it comes to submitting your life to God, you have no will." Then the world, the flesh and the devil, and sanctification.
