Office

Episode Title: Halloween

Episode #3

You are listening to A Day in The Office the podcast with your host(s) Samaira Sachdeva.

In this episode of A Day in The Office the Podcast, I’m going to discuss multiple Halloween episodes of The Office, and this time, I’m going to be switching up the regular schedule, by calling in a guest who loves The Office as much as I do, and asking them some questions and fun Halloween related conversations! So, I want to give a warm welcome to my amazing guest in this episode, a lover of The Office, and the best cook and baker you’ll ever meet, Erin Lee.

Segment 1: Asking questions

Okay, so, as I said, this podcast episode is gonna be running a little differently than my usual style. So going in order, the Halloween episodes of The Office are season 2, episode 5: “Halloween”, season 5, episode 6: “Employee Transfer”, season 7, episode 6: “Costume Contest”, season 8, episode 5: “Spooked”, and finally, season 9, episode 6, ‘Here Comes Treble”. So now I’m going to turn my attention to the guest, and let’s hear some of her opinions.

TO GUESTS:

So, what is your favorite Halloween episode of The Office and why?

Okay, in the “Costume Contest” episode, they, obviously, have a costume contest, right? So, a lot of people end up voting Oscar as the winner, who didn’t really dress up. He was just in normal clothing, but for the sake of the holiday, called himself a “rational consumer”. Everyone votes for him because they think he’s the least likely to win, but he ends up winning because basically, everyone voted for him. So now I wanna ask you guys, who would you vote for in this episode? And I mean like based on how good the costume is, not like who would least likely win, like who do you think you would actually vote for, for best costume?

Going back to the first Halloween episode of The Office, called, “Halloween”, Michael has to choose a person in the office to fire, and he had been putting it off for the whole month. So, in the end, he chooses to fire Devin. Now, we don’t really know a lot about Devin because he didn’t have, much of a role for the episodes he was in, and then he was, you know, fired, so we didn’t see him after that.

If you were Michael, who would you choose to fire based on performance and how their work performance is? Also, you can include people who weren’t in this episode yet, so like Andy, Erin, Gabe, Pete, Clark, basically whoever has had a somewhat main role in the show.

Segment 2: Looking into the past

Now, I think in this Halloween episode, it would only be fair to discuss our previous Halloween costumes, and fun stories, and all things Halloween. Like in the first Halloween episode of the show, Jim dressed up as a piece of paper, wearing a white button-up shirt with three black circles taped to it. Then, another year, he dressed up as a guy named Dave with one of those name tags that say like, “hello my name is, and then Dave”. And then in another episode, Jim had no costume, while Pam was Olive Oyl, and she wanted Jim to be Popeye so she bought him this whole entire grand costume which was never Jim’s thing. But, towards the end, he finally caved in and decided to dress up as Popeye and Pam was really happy. So, now I want to ask you, were you always like, lowkey, when it came to Halloween? Or were you the type to go full out in a complete costume and in the full spirit of the holiday?

Segment 3:

Alright, now let’s make this a little more fun than it’s already been. So I’m going to give you all a quick summary of it, so you can decide if you agree with most of the audience when they say it’s offensive. So this episode is very early on in the series. It is the second episode of season 1. Now in this episode, Michael imitates a very controversial and racist Chris Rock routine. Everyone from the office files a complaint to corporate about Michael, which forces them to undergo a meeting in which a consultant, known as Mr. Brown in the episode, teaches the office about the importance of diversity and tolerance. Michael being Michael insists on teaching the importance of diversity in the workplace in his own way, and takes over the meeting. Okay, so if you think that this episode is bad so far, just wait until you hear about this part. So now we know that Michael has taken over the seminar to teach it himself. Which is already bad enough as is. And as we also already know, Michael is very oblivious to pretty much everything that he does. So, Michael assigns each staff member with a card that has a different race written on it. With these cards, he tells the staff to treat people how they would be treated if they were the race written on their cards. So now, all the staff members are basically very confused but they all know Michael. They know that this is the type of oblivious person he is, so they didn’t really question him. But, after a while, the staff start to get very aggravated and annoyed with Michael, and here’s why. Michael begins to claim that he is now “two fifteenths Native American.” which is not okay to say, considering that he is not, in fact, “two fifteenths Native American” Along with this, Kelly, the same staff member from my last podcast episode, walks into Michaels racist seminar. She was out in a meeting of her own, so she didn’t exactly know what was going on when she walked into the conference room. So, you know, she wasn’t there, meaning that she never received an index card from Michael. However, despite not receiving a card, he delivers a very racist impression of Indian people to Kelly, who takes offense and slaps Michael. And I feel like we need to talk more about how it isn’t okay to mock accents such as Indian ones. And although I personally haven’t had someone be racist to my face, regardless, I still know that it, well, exists. I know even of people in my grade who have said racist remarks about Indians and even other cultures and races which is really not okay. So I think we should also talk about the Indian stereotype in tv shows and movies. One thing that I like about The Office, and about Kelly, is that she doesn’t have an Indian accent. Now you might think that her not having an accent is just of little significance, but for me, this is really important, and here’s why. A lot of shows, and I feel like Disney shows especially, make Indian actors force an Indian accent. For example, in the show, Jessie from Disney channel, one of the main characters, Ravi, was adopted from India with an Indian accent and a pet lizard. Lizard? Seriously? I feel like that’s so extra and unnecessary and the directors only did this just to add to the Indian stereotype and to make the character seem more “realistic” in a sense when this isn’t realistic at all. Especially the pet lizard. Along with that, they made Ravi be this super-smart literal nerd who everyone makes fun of for being incredibly smart. I think we all know that one of the major Indian stereotypes is how smart Indians are. I also just want to add, that the actor who plays Ravi from Jessie, Karan Brar, does not in fact have an accent in real life, nor did he during the filming of the show. So for me, it just makes me feel weird how Disney, a channel and platform known by pretty much the whole world, was adding to the stereotype of a “typical Indian child”. Now, going back to The Office, I was talking about how I like the fact that Kelly does not have an accent. For me, this makes the show better because the directors didn’t force the actor Mindy Kaling, to sound like someone she’s not. It just made the show and the character more relatable to me in that way.

Segment 3: Meet the Actors

So I have already mentioned Mindy Kaling a few times throughout this podcast episode and my last one, so you already know a good amount about her. I want to talk about two characters who haven’t been given much spotlight by me yet, which are Pam and Angela. The actors who play these characters, Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, have a podcast of their own, where they talk about episodes of The Office, how it was made, and interviewing the other actors who starred in the show, and it’s called The Office Ladies. So, one of their podcast episodes talked about the episode that I’m talking about, Diversity Day. So according to Jenna Fischer, she said that the scene with the index cards was actually based on a situation that occurred in real life. I just want to take a moment to let that sink in because it’s so crazy to me that this actually happened to people. Fischer said that one of the writer’s assistants of the show, Tom, had a college class in which they each received an index card with different ethnicities, and they had to treat each other based on the stereotypes of the ethnicities. I think that’s so strange that this was allowed to happen in real life, even if it was so long ago. Now some fun facts that were talked about in The Office Ladies podcast about the episode are that this episode was the first completely original script that was created by the American version of The Office. Basically, if you don’t know, there are two versions of the show. The American, and the British. There is actually also an Indian version that is fairly new, and less known, so I wonder how and if they added the scene mocking the Indian accent. So like I was saying most episodes of The Office America, were created from the scripts of the British version, which was the first created version of the show. So, the Diversity Day episode was the first that was originally thought of, not one that was copied from the British version. Another cool fact is that B.J. Novack, who played Ryan Howard, Kelly’s boyfriend in the show, actually wrote this episode when he was 25 years old. This was his first real job and the first script writing for a TV show.

	So that is all I have for this podcast episode, I hope you enjoyed listening and I’ll see you next time!

Music Credits: Countryside by Balkan Jingles, and Mark by Eric Van der Western.

Subscribe to our Podcast

Apple Podcasts

Spotify

Google Podcasts

Stitcher

YouTube

Connect with us on Social Media

@theHVSPN

https://a-day-in-the-office.captivate.fm

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/53897357-1d0f-4ad8-b4aa-a25cd8f4d6f2/4vse11of6SFdgdOsNxg0hugx.jpg"/>
Hopewell Valley Student Publications Network

<itunes:duration>13:16</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:episode>2</itunes:episode><itunes:author>Hopewell Valley Student Publications Network</itunes:author>

Diwali Discussions
<itunes:title>Diwali Discussions</itunes:title>

Hopewell Valley Student Podcasting Network

Show Name: A Day in The Office

Episode Title: Diwali Discussions

Episode #1

You are listening to A Day in The Office the podcast with your host(s) Samaira Sachdeva.

In this episode of A Day in The Office the Podcast, I will discuss the Diwali episode of The Office, how I relate to this episode, and the cast of the show.

Segment 1: Summary of the Diwali episode

In this episode of the third season, Kelly hosts a Diwali party and invites everyone from the Dunder Mifflin Paper Company office. Along with this, he brings along his girlfriend Carol who was under the impression that it was a costume party because that is what Michael told her, so they both showed up in a costume. Carol, of course, was embarrassed when she dressed up as a cheerleader when she was surrounded by people in Saris. Along with the embarrassment that Carol was already facing, Michael got a little ahead of himself and decided to propose to her at the party, in front of all of his coworkers and Kelly’s friends and family, when it had only been their third date. Meanwhile, Kelly’s parents are interrogating Ryan (kelly’s boyfriend) about his life goals, and when Ryan responds with “traveling” and “buying an Xbox”, her parents begin to pressure Kelly to marry an Indian doctor, which of course, is the perfect person according to Indian parents everywhere. As I said, my family and I also go to Diwali parties, and if we don’t we love to celebrate ourselves! One time in particular when I went to a Diwali party at my neighbor’s house, this was around the time when I had just started watching The Office for the first time, I thought it was so funny when this group of teenagers decided to sing the exact song that Michael sang in the Diwali episode, at the party. I thought it was so cool because I knew what episode they were singing from, and what they were talking about, and I thought it was so funny and hilarious because I was like “Haha! I know what you’re talking about!” which I wouldn’t have known had I not watched the show. Also, something that I didn’t mention when summarizing the episode of the show was that when Michael asked Kelly about what Diwali is, Kelly said that she didn’t know. To me, it seems that Kelly doesn’t have much knowledge about her culture or about Hinduism, and honestly, I am kind of the same way. Although I love my culture and all of the fun and different holidays, I can’t say I know much about it. I do know, however, what Diwali is. I assume that you’re probably wondering what this whole episode is even based on, so let me tell you what I know about the holiday. Diwali is the festival of lights, a festival where we celebrate good over evil and light over darkness.

Segment 3: Meet the Actors

So as I said, Kelly, similarly to me, is Indian. The actor who plays Kelly is Mindy Kaling, and she has acted in some amazing movies like A Wrinkle in Time, Ocean’s 8, Late Night, and much more. She has also directed her own Netflix Original series, called Never Have I Ever, which centers around an Indian American girl, and her high school experiences. Mindy Kaling is the first Indian American to have her own network show which is so, so cool and I think she has become a new representative for Indian American girls everywhere. Going back to The Office, in the show, her character Kelly, dated a guy named Ryan, who also works with her. Even though the show ended back in 2012, Mindy and the actor who plays Ryan, B.J. Novack, have been very, very close off-camera and over the 7 years of filming. So much so, that B.J. is the godfather to Mindy’s kids. Also, Novack and Kaling actually produced many of the episodes of The Office, which could definitely take part in how close their friendship has always been. Some other actors of The Office such as Steve Carell who plays Michael and John Krasinski who plays Jim, have become so well known and famous. Steve Carell has acted in Beautiful Boy, Crazy Stupid Love, Welcome to Marwen, and was the voice of Gru from Despicable Me. Meanwhile, John Krasinsky has starred in A Quiet Place One and Two, and Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan.

Music Credits: Countryside by Balkan Jingles, and Mark by Eric Van der Western.

Subscribe to our Podcast

Apple Podcasts

Spotify

Google Podcasts

Stitcher

YouTube

Connect with us on Social Media

@theHVSPN

https://a-day-in-the-office.captivate.fm

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/53897357-1d0f-4ad8-b4aa-a25cd8f4d6f2/4vse11of6SFdgdOsNxg0hugx.jpg"/>
Hopewell Valley Student Publications Network

<itunes:duration>08:12</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:episode>1</itunes:episode><itunes:author>Hopewell Valley Student Publications Network</itunes:author>

Welcome to “A Day in the Office”
<itunes:title>Welcome to “A Day in the Office”</itunes:title>

Introduction: A Day in The Office

A Day in The Office is a student-run podcast that takes a deeper look into episodes of a comedic mockumentary, The Office.
