The Chopin Law Firm and the Above the Legal Limit community are deeply saddened by the passing of Sidney Smith of New Orleans, a man whose creativity, vision, and love for his city left an unforgettable mark. Born and raised in New Orleans, Sidney’s journey began when his father gave him his first camera—a gift that would spark a lifelong passion. By his late teens, he was already capturing iconic images of legendary performers at The Warehouse, the city’s storied concert hall, quickly establishing himself as a vital voice in documenting New Orleans’ music scene.

Through the 1970s and beyond, Sidney became a trusted photographer for some of the world’s greatest musicians. His work appeared in Rolling Stone and other leading music magazines, and his portfolio includes rare and intimate photographs of Paul McCartney, Led Zeppelin, and the Allman Brothers. Paul McCartney himself chose Sidney to document the recording of Venus and Mars in New Orleans, a testament to his artistry and reputation. Many of his images now live on in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and will continue to inspire music lovers and historians for generations to come.

Sidney’s creativity did not end with photography. He was also an entrepreneur who brought storytelling and culture to life through Haunted History Tours of New Orleans, which became one of the city’s most popular attractions. Welcoming tens of thousands of visitors each year, his tours blended folklore, history, and architecture in a way that captured the unique spirit of New Orleans. From haunted tales to the rhythms of live music, Sidney dedicated himself to sharing the soul of the city he loved so much.

His later years were marked by both resilience and personal challenges, including his battle with pancreatic cancer and the devastating loss of his son, Justin. Yet even in hardship, Sidney remained committed to his art, his community, and his family. Plans are underway to preserve his photographic archive with The Historic New Orleans Collection, ensuring that his work—and the history it captured—will live on.

Sidney Smith will be remembered as more than a photographer and tour founder; he was a storyteller, a cultural ambassador, and a proud New Orleanian. His images, his tours, and his unwavering devotion to the city reflect the true essence of Sidney Smith New Orleans—a man who captured its heartbeat and shared it with the world.
