Together, they explore Mikaela’s academic foundation and her original aspirations to become a veterinarian. You’ll hear the incredible story of how an unexpected "cow kick" and a series of evolving passions ultimately led her to trade animal science for the high-stakes world of human healthcare. These are the types of nurse survival stories that reveal the messy, non-linear reality of finding one's true calling.

Throughout the episode, Mikaela reflects on the very real challenges she faced on the front lines. She pulls back the curtain on demanding clinical rotations and the sheer adrenaline of overwhelming “Code Blue” moments, where textbook theory meets the raw pressure of life-and-death situations. The dialogue gets candid as Mikaela discusses the notorious “nurses eating their young” dynamic and how she navigated the imposter syndrome that often haunts new graduates. A successful support system should provide the necessary resources to help student-athletes succeed academically while also allowing them to excel in their sports. These may include academic tutors, mental health professionals, and physical trainers. Additionally, a support system should cater to the unique needs of each student-athlete, recognizing their personal strengths and weaknesses. Jean Boyd and Alonzo Jones discussed the importance of a holistic support system for student-athletes at Arizona State University. They shared how proactive measures, like providing tailored assistance in time management, study skills, and well-being, can help ensure a student-athlete's success. By focusing on individual student needs, they demonstrate their commitment to not only athletic but also academic success, leading to high retention and graduation rates for these students.

Balancing Multiple Roles and the Matrix of Decision Making

Managing multiple roles and identities, such as a student, athlete, and socialite, can be challenging for college students. Developing a sense of situational identity and understanding the different roles one has in different contexts can be a valuable tool for maintaining balance. The challenge lies in recognizing the legitimacy of each identity and making intentional and mindful decisions that align with one's values and goals while navigating various situations.

Alonzo Jones introduces the concept of situational identity during the interview and emphasizes its importance for student-athletes. Both Boyd and Jones note that understanding and navigating these various roles can lead to success beyond sports and into leadership positions in any field. Today I've got Dr. Shandra McDonald, and we're going to talk about academic survival. Shandra wants others to find those aha moments, where the light turns on.

[00:02:29]

Dr. Shandra McDonald is the author of Academic Survival: Simple Strategies for Improving Your Grades. We'll talk about the challenges facing students with academic ambitions. And we'll explore her powerful personal story.

[00:03:55]

Every one of the six Truth Quest episodes starts with the voice of Shandra McDonald. When did you discover that you had a voice for quality audio? Years ago, I'd always wanted to do a podcast, but I didn't have a subject. Now I have something to say.

[00:09:54]

Shandra L. McDonald: Academic Survival is me interviewing freshmen, college freshmen, also interviewing college students and former college students. The whole purpose of it is to really help the college freshman who is perhaps feeling like they're in over their head. Just stick it out. It will get easier.

[00:11:39]

Shandra: I want to bring stories that will talk college life, challenges students will face. My first episode was Ahmara Watson, a double major. Next week, I'm interviewing someone who got pregnant in college. I want students to hear from people who have successfully completed that journey.

[00:17:12]

Shandra: I struggled a lot academically particularly with reading. In the fourth grade, I got a D in reading. It wasn't until I was in my doctoral program that I learned why.

[00:21:39]

For me, because it's slight, I slightly see double. When I finally saw the doctor, it was a breakthrough moment.

[00:24:00]

When you went to college, you wanted to be a probation officer. How did you develop the disciplines that enabled you to go from a rough freshman year to almost straight A's? Having a goal says a lot for your journey.

[00:29:09]

Your major was criminal justice. But because of your grades, some doors opened for you that caused you to move on to something other than becoming a probation officer. You got a job with the FAA through their Outstanding Scholars Program. You had to have a minimum GPA of 3.5.

[00:32:13]

I realized that there was a lot that I learned along the way that allowed me to improve my grades. So, I was like, I'm going to write a book. Simple strategies for improving your grades. That's where the book came from. How did you end up getting your doctorate?

[00:33:55]

The author wanted to get a doctorate in biblical scholar theology. Velmar Amador-Lankster is a freshman at UC San Diego. On this episode, we'll be talking about her emotional well-being, nurturing relationships, and balance.

[00:00:48]

The Academic Survival podcast aims to move from academic survival to academic self-discipline. Velmar Amador-Lankster is a first-year student at UC San Diego. She talks about her first quarter of college and developing self-discipline techniques.

[00:03:07]

UC San Diego is broken up into different, smaller colleges within the larger college. Are they broken up by discipline or by major? My first day of college was September 17. I'm a double major in Political Science: Public Law and Sociology.

[00:07:44]

High school definitely prepared me for the academic rigor of college. College is a lot more flexible, and so you have to manage your own time and schedule. High school misses the mark in the area of just preparing you to be on your own.

[00:10:29]

I cannot handle four courses my first quarter of college and so many hours of work per week. I even talked to my manager to see if I could reduce my hours. My parents have always been very lenient with me in terms of being very understanding. I'm just doing what I feel is bright and smart for my future.

[00:12:15]

UC San Diego student says coming to school was one of the best decisions she's ever made. The other school she was considering was USC, but it was just not financially smart. She decided to go to a school that's more economical.

[00:13:59]

College has just kind of clearly showed me that I really have a strength in writing.

She decided to go to a school that's more economical.

[00:13:59]

College has just kind of clearly showed me that I really have a strength in writing. But sometimes my writing style isn't as concise as I should be. His alcohol and opioid use destroyed his relationships with his friends and his family. He wrote a book titled Five Things to Know Before You Get Sober. Nico shares his story and how he got sober.

[00:02:01]

Today is a special episode of Academic Survival dedicated to my uncle, Samuel McDonald. Today we are going to be speaking with Nico morales, and he is going to talk to us about the journey of consuming alcohol. Where it can lead you and the other side of it in terms of recovery.

[00:03:46]

When was your first introduction to drugs and or alcohol? Probably around the age of ten. I started using substances when I was 14 years old.

[00:05:33]

Axe Body spray mixed with some cannabis. Probably that stuff stunk. That's one indicator of somebody's use when I got home. The way that it worked out is that nobody was going to get home for a few hours.

[00:06:29]

Smoking cannabis allowed my brain to slow down. The detrimental part, the part that got me hooked, was that slowing down gave me time to process what I was doing. The long term implications are still unknown for me.

[00:12:39]

He doesn't have any of the friends that he used to have. He says a friend tried to tell him to change his lifestyle, but he didn't heed his advice. Have you ever thought about reaching out to him?

[00:16:19]

There were a couple of people that I brought down with me. One of my best friends got him hooked. They surrounded themselves with me, thinking I was a positive influence. For every individual who sold drugs, 500 people die.

[00:17:32]

My family relationships got completely ruined because of my alcohol consumption, my opiate use disorder. Now because they got ruined. They are being rebuilt. But at the time, all of them crumbled to nada niltz.

[00:20:28]

Nico: They actually don't diagnose anybody as being an addict. Addict is a term that was come up by society, taken from addiction. The clinically proper terms that they want us to use is person first disorders. Nico made sure to keep all of his stuff off paperwork.

[00:24:25]

When I hit rock bottom, I didn't have anybody around. It was actually my 27th birthday. I lived a life that just wasn't safe and wasn't healthy. When I stopped drinking, my body started to hurt a lot and I realized I needed a hip replacement.

[00:30:41]

Nico's daily living quality of life had tremendously dropped. What he went through, there's a 1% success rate. But that means that there is a reason that he's here.

[00:32:23]

"I chose to get my hips replaced because I realized that I have value to add to this world," he says. "I could travel, and I could go tell my story. He hopes his story will help others avoid the pain.

[00:35:18]

My definition of sober means I do not ingest or inject or consume any type of narcotic, whether that's legal or illegal. For me, defining sober means what am I seeking to get immediate gratification from and do I need to? What advice would you give college students trying to mix academic life with drinking?

[00:39:07]

"I was a drug dealer at that time. It really interfered with school. After I dropped out of college, I go back to school when I'm 30," says Nico. He graduated with a bachelor's in business without paying for it. From laying in an abandoned building, to graduating with honors.

[00:43:20]

The book is called Five Things to Know Before You Get Sober. What you'll get out of there is the five things that I believe anybody should know before they attempt sobriety. The best review that I've received so far is it was like my cousin was dropping me off to rehab.

[00:45:41]

How do you celebrate successes or wins in life? So many people associate alcohol with celebration. What I have learned to do is take myself to a nice meal. I like to go get tattoos. That's how I celebrate.

[00:46:54]

One of my favorite places to go to is called gobble this in Old Town, New Mexico. Favorite tattoo? I do not have a favorite tattoo, actually.

[00:49:03]

Five things to know before you get sober. Final parting words.
