Today’s episode features a great documentary film maker Sky Bergman. Sky's recent work Lives Well Lived focussed on a cohort of 40 inspiring individuals over the age of 75 and how they’re challenging the assumptions and stereotypes of later life.

We had a lovely chat with Sky about her film, and there’s some really warm moments in here about how sensitive and inquisitive conversations with our loved ones allow us all to reflect and learn from their experiences.

Loneliness, Social Connections and Dementia with Dr. Snorri Bjorn Rafnsson

Today we're focussing on the importance of social connection and presenting two perspectives on how it can affect the health and well being of older adults.

Our first conversation features Dr. Snorri Bjorn Rafnsson from the University of West London, who's research examines some of the determinants of dementia and how we might delay and stop it's onset. In this episode Snorri helps us take a closer look at the relationships between loneliness, internet usage and dementia play out and some potential new areas for exploration.

In the second half of this episode we speak to Jamie McIntyre from the Australian Red Cross who co-ordinates around 50 volunteers up in Tweed Heads as they provide support to socially isolated older adults. Jamie and the team do great work in partnership with SilVR Adventures, together we've been bringing immersive virtual reality experiences to care facilities and Jamie shares a little bit with us about that experience and how the SilVR Adventures' solution is enriching the lives of older adults through social connection.

Financial Elder Abuse and Inheritance Impatience with Luke Wright

For today's episode we're dedicating it to understanding more about financial elder abuse and how to prevent it.

We're joined by Luke Wright from the Victorian State Trustees to understand a bit more about the prevalence, causes and many face of financial elder abuse and some warning signs to look out for.

As Luke says in the interview, financial abuse is almost the canary in the coal mine of elder abuse - as its presence is a pretty good indicator of other types of abuse.

Judy Cornish is the creator of the DAWN method - and she joins us for a fun and fascinating conversation about how she came into dementia care with no prior experience and developed a way to embrace the strengths and avoid weaknesses of people living with dementia.

Judy’s model leverages the highly developed intuitive skills of people living with dementia and encourage carers and families to communicate in ways that don’t depend on the often-diminishing rational skills, which she explains in quite a bit more detail throughout the episode.

Falls Prevention and Acceptable Interventions with Professor Kim Delbaere

Today’s episode is all about falls. Falls are one of the most prevalent and challenging risks that older adults face and addressing them, needs consideration of a wide array of risk factors. From physical and mental health, to environment, and as we learn in this interview – even what you’re thinking about.

Our guest is Professor Kim Delbaere from UNSW and Neuroscience Research Australia or NEURA. Her work focuses on understanding the factors that can lead to falls among older adults and finding out, what she calls "acceptable interventions”.

Kim is also the President of the Australian and New Zealand Falls Prevention Society and has been instrumental in the creation of new tools for falls prevention such as the app Standing Tall (which you can learn more about at www.standingtall.org.au).

Our guest is leading the push for the recognition of the rights of older people, both in Australia and to the United Nations. Emeritus Professor Andrew Byrnes from the University of New South Wales joins us to talk about the importance of human rights, why we need a specific international treaty on the rights of older adults, and how it would positively impact carers and care recipients around the world.

Andrew is a great presenter who helps to interpret this complex legal topic, into real terms for people working in the industry, particularly with reference to the findings of last year's Royal Commission.

Today’s episode is with Dr. Natasha Ginnivan from University of New South Wales. Natasha is a research fellow in the school of psychology at UNSW and her work focuses on cultural attitudes to ageing, stereotypes and self-perceptions.

Our conversation really focussed on how our self-perceptions of our own ageing can have long term health effects, and how things like media portrayal, cultural values and intergenerational environments can reduce or exacerbate these effects.

We also briefly spoke about an exciting Virtual Reality based project Natasha was part of that harnessed the immersive nature of the technology to deliver an emotionally affecting experience on the subject of dementia.

Today is the 1-year anniversary of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, and we figured - you know what it’s time to put it to bed. As Professor Joseph Ibrahim said on the show last year, it’s finished it’s gone, and it’s in the hands of the Government now.

We are back with Season 3 and have a 𝗕𝗜𝗚 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻 planned in 2022 with exciting announcements, fascinating guests and we really want to feature more voices of older adults, so to kick things off we're talking about preserving some very important human stories.

Some of the most rewarding and exciting moments of working in aged care are hearing about the lives and experiences of older adults, and this episode is all about that feeling. We've got one unbelievable life story, and a look at how technology will allow us to keep asking elders questions about their lives, long after they've passed away.

Joe de Haan is a 99-year-old Holocaust survivor was in hiding from Nazi's in Holland, relocated across the world at 68 and now shares his inspiring story with students at the Melbourne Holocaust Centre. Joe is an active, upbeat, and energetic guy - so energetic this episode needs a language warning!

Our second guest is an expert in collecting and preserving stories of older adults. Shannon Biederman is a curator at the Sydney Jewish Museum and speaks to us about Dimensions in Testimony, a project the museum is running with the Shoah Foundation to create interactive holograms of several holocaust survivors.

The episode’s release also coincides with International Holocaust Remembrance Day, and we’re glad we can share these two perspectives at this time.

We are talking to the author and long-time dementia advocate, Christine Bryden, about her life with dementia and her work as one of Australia's first dementia advocates.

Christine was diagnosed with early onset dementia in 1995, at the age of forty-six. Her life transformed immediately as she left her job and focused on restructuring her life and raising her three daughters.

In the following twenty-five years she has been incredibly outspoken on her life with dementia, including writing five books about her experiences.

As you will hear, Christine is passionate about addressing some misconceptions of dementia and talks openly about the changes that she would like to see in the way that people with dementia are viewed.

This is our last holiday episode for the year and we’ve got a special one today with Father Bob Maguire.

For those of you who don’t know the name, Father Bob is a retired catholic priest, the so called Larrikin priest who at the age of 87 is still very active in the community helping those who need a hand, and always very quick with a story or joke.

You might’ve heard Father Bob on the radio or seen him on TV, he’s got such a unique way of speaking and an irreverent sense of humour, as you’ll hear it was a fun one.

Hello there everybody, this is another xmas short from the ACE Podcast. We’ve got a few bite sized episodes in December, looking at all the elements that go into making a great Christmas and end of year. What would Christmas be without laughter and merriment, that’s why we’ve got comedian Georgie Carroll joining us today.

Georgie’s probably best known as the nurse comedian, who in her own words started mining her professional life as a nurse for comedy. We’re doing something a little bit different throughout the month of December. To get ourselves in the holiday spirit or Christmas mood we’re presenting a few short, conversations over the next few weeks about this special time of year.

De Hogeweyk and a Normal Life with Dementia - Jannette Spiering (Be Advice)

Today, we have an interview that we’ve been looking forward to for a while, with Jannette Spiering from Be Advice and also De Hogeweyk in the Netherlands. Even if you don’t recognise the names you may know the story, it’s been described as “the dementia village” a name Jannette and the team strongly dislike, but it’s received a lot of attention for it’s mission of creating a normal life for people living with dementia.

They do all sorts of fantastic stuff in De Hogeweyk to ensure that residents retain their freedom and have a fulfilling life with support from the care teams. With restaurants, a supermarket, and the freedom for residents to walk around the neighbourhood, Jannette and the team pioneered this approach in the 90s.

We’re fast approaching the end of 2021 still feels weird to say, and we’ll be doing something a little special throughout December. In the three weeks before Christmas we’ll be featuring some shorter, bite sized episodes each Tuesday and Friday talking about one aspect of Christmas and the holidays.

It’ll be a little bit of fun to get us all in the spirit for the end of the year.

You may have heard our episode with Professor Joseph Ibrahim a fortnight ago, called The Legacy of the Royal Commission, in which Joe chatted about the impact of the Royal Commission’s final report and the Government’s policy response. Well this episode continues that conversation from a different viewpoint.

On the show today we're talking to Kerryn Dillon and Rich Ainley from PwC, who as well as advising many aged care providers on matters of structure and management, guided the Government in the creation of the so-called "Five Pillars Plan".

This episode is really about deconstructing the effects that this Government plan will have on the industry, from management, to care workers and to care recipients and families. It turns out, it’ll take some time for changes to set in, but in the meantime Kerryn and Rich have some ideas that can help the industry get ready for imminent change.

Chris and the Whiddon team have recently released a paper identifying some recurring problems and proposing possible solutions to mitigate this in future.

It's been 250 days since the aged care Royal Commission report was released but what is it's legacy? Today, we're delighted to welcome Professor Joseph Ibrahim on to the Aged Care Enrichment Podcast to share his thoughts.

Joe is a practicing senior specialist in geriatric medicine, Professor at the Department of Forensic Medicine at Monash University, and creating informative content on dignity of risk and other challenges of dementia care via his website www.profjoe.com.au

Today's episode is about finding new horizons in dementia care and it focuses on two different approaches in the UK that are having positive impacts on the period of diagnosis and life with dementia - from brand new technology that’s increasing the speed and accuracy of Alzheimer’s diagnosis to how a community led approach can transform the everyday experiences for people with dementia.

We're delighted by two esteemed guests for this discussion. Firstly, Dr. Timothy Rittman from the department of Clinical Neurosciences at the University of Cambridge. Tim is working alongside his colleague, Professor Zoe Kourtzi on an AI program that uses brain scans to predict whether somebody will develop Alzheimer's, and how fast the disease will progress.

We're also talking to Ian Sherriff, who’s been leading efforts throughout an astounding number of organisations in the UK, including the University of Plymouth, to shape supportive and enabling communities for people living with dementia. We're sure most of you would have watched the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) show 'Old People's Home for 4 Year Olds'? Greg has worked with many of the same guests and team that featured on the show and he shares with us a lot of the transformative benefits that collaborative learning programs can have for both generations.

With a background outside of aged care, Greg became interested in using technology to connect older adults and kids together where they could bring meaning, excitement and support to each other through a structured learning program.

One of the things that Greg talks about is the personal connections that participants in these programs develop and how that can improve the quality of life and engagement for both parties. In the interview we get into some of the challenges that Flora faced when looking for work in her late 40s, the work she does with her silver economy consultancy Ethnos Strategy, and the changing perception of older people in Latin America.

Having lived and worked in the US for many years, Flora has some interesting insights into what makes ageing in Argentina and the wider region, a very different experience to countries like Australia.

To help us explore the experience of people living with Parkinson’s, we have the CEO of the Shake it Up Foundation, Clyde Campbell, and in the second half of the show, immersive storyteller and friend of pod, Wesley Della Volla.

Clyde shares the story of how his diagnosis propelled him into the field of Parkinson’s research, and how The Shake it Up Foundation is pairing Australian researchers with the Michael J. Fox Foundation in the US to help slow, stop and cure Parkinson’s.

Wesley is an Adjunct Lecturer at Georgetown University and Founder of Meridian TreeHouse in Washington. Wesley has an extensive career working in the immersive storytelling space with National Geographic, particularly through our favourite medium, virtual reality. As you’ll hear in the interview, his focus changed after his diagnosis with young onset Parkinson’s, and he’s passionate about building transformative virtual experiences for people with neuro-diversity and physical limitations.

Through her work she puts forward a very compelling argument that monitoring is actually in the interests of not only the residents, but also care workers and the providers themselves, which you’ll hear in this episode. CCFTV also supports care workers and families all around the world through incidences and disputes in aged care, so if you know someone who is in need of support then they may be able to provide some help.

Ngaire is a dietician, author and consultant whose work focuses on addressing some of the poor and unhelpful dietary information for older adults. As it turns out older adults may need to follow the exact opposite instructions to what you’d expect, to keep them safe from injury and illness and Ngaire really clarifies this misunderstanding in the episode.

She also talks about how we’re putting the cart before the horse with our fixation on nutrition, and why our first priority should be that the food is being eaten in residential care.

Ashton began investigating ageism in her mid 50s and what she discovered led her to write her book, This Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism, as well as creating a number of other resources to combat ageism, which you’ll hear about in the episode.

We really enjoyed this interview, Ashton brings a lot of energy and attitude, and we learnt a lot about how despite our best efforts, we're still carrying a lot of bias in our opinions of older adults, which you’ll hear in the discussion.

Improving Palliative Care - Leeroy William (ANZSPM)

Leeroy is the President of the Australian and New Zealand Society of Palliative Medicine. He’s also an Adjunct Clinical Professor at the University of Monash and Clinical Director of supportive and Palliative Care at Eastern Health in Melbourne.

He came on the show to help us understand the scope of palliative care, and how it encompasses much more than just care in the final moments of someone’s life.

For a lot of our listeners working in the aged care space, death and dying are common scenarios and in this interview Leeroy shares with us a few tools to help support people better as they’re approaching the end of their lives.

Dementia Through The Disability Lens - Kate Swaffer (Dementia Alliance International)

Today, we're delighted to welcome Kate Swaffer on to the Aged Care Enrichment Podcast. Kate is one of Australia’s most prominent advocates for the rights of people living with dementia. She herself was diagnosed with early onset dementia 13 years ago and is particularly passionate about ensuring that the post diagnostic process for people living with dementia improves dramatically.

She was the first person living with dementia to be invited to give a keynote speech to the World Health Organisation. She was also South Australia’s Australian of the Year for 2017 and co-founded the organisation Dementia Alliance International, a peer support network for people living with dementia.

This episode is all about viewing dementia as a condition that causes disabilities, and by interpreting the symptoms of dementia as specific disabilities, care and support for people living with dementia will improve drastically. There’s a lot more really interesting information in this episode, and we were thrilled to get the chance to talk to Kate.

Jenny is a senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne in the School of Computing and Information Technology, and her research is focused on human-computer interactions and how people are using technology in all aspects of their lives.

Her most recent research has examined the ways in which emerging technologies can be used to enrich the lives of older adults, particularly in residential aged care, and she has done a lot of work with the staff of these facilities to understand how the technologies are being used and the possible benefits and ethical concerns of their implementation.

In this conversation, we talked about some specific technologies like virtual reality and social robots, as well as some opportunities for self-expression and further social integration that new technologies can bring to older adults.

This interview was recorded in mid-September 2020 so there are some references to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the information is still relevant no matter when you are listening to it.

In her work with Professor Loretta Baldassar from the University of WA, she has been conducting research on the effectiveness of virtual reality and touch screen technology in overcoming isolation and stimulating social engagement in both residential and self-contained aged care environments.
