This newest Resident Evil movie is simultaneously a better adaptation and a better movie than the Paul W.S. Anderson movies, while also not being good enough. It crams the broad story of the first two Resident Evil games into a breathless mess that's goofy and entertaining, while wasting tons of opportunities to tell the best stories from the source material. But hey, at least it adapts the games.

This month, Adaptation Decay dips its toe into the waters of the "Teenage Tit Freak" genre of sex comedies from the 1980s. A high school grad named Jeff runs his grandfather's arcade with the help of a nerd named Eugene and a slob named Dorfus. This arcade happens to be a place where no woman can keep her top on, and a clown named King Vidiot menaces the regulars. Enter the local businessman who declares war against their degeneracy, and works to sabotage the community center for vaguely defined reasons.

As a warning this movie is very much a product of its time, and we talk about the content in it... this means there will be some discussion of consent problems, but ultimately the movie is too weirdly good-natured to go full Revenge of the Nerds.

The Muppet Babies was a smash hit cartoon that started the "baby versions of popular characters" craze, but video game fans remember one episode in particular. Gonzo loves his Pretendo, and the entire nursery goes NUTS when they start playing it along with him. This episode is an excuse for us to get nostalgic for the Muppets while also doing a shorter episode, so we hope you enjoy going on this ride with us.

This month we take a look at two Christmas specials: one from the Pac-Man cartoon, and one from the Pokemon anime. https://youtu.be/UA8-IehZuF0 (The Pac-Man cartoon) remains as baffling and boring as always, relying on the same non-joke about "chomping" for its entire duration. Meanwhile, the Pokemon Christmas special, https://youtu.be/jdd5Z16gPmo ("Stantler's Little Helpers") is very cute, but slight.

Somehow, both specials have the same plot: Santa injures his reindeer, and it's up to the heroes to drug them so they can get back in the air.

There are some nice things to be said about the original Silent Hill movie. It has pacing and script problems, but its production design is both high quality AND faithful to the games. When it came time to make a followup, they whiffed every single aspect of it. Sharon from the first movie is all grown up, and Silent Hill wants her back. At least we think it does, it's very self-contradictory.

This month we talk about five issues of really bad comic adaptations of Resident Evil, which should actually be really easy to adapt! It's nonsense, really, how WildStorm managed to biff this one so hard. What starts as half-assed, rushed retellings of the first two games expands into some slightly better, but still worthless expansions and side stories. How does Barry Burton's therapy go? What if there were zombies in the Eiffel Tower? What if there were some bats in a desert?

We head back to the earliest days of video game cartoons to talk about a confusing and boring variety show that's not really based on your arcade favorites! The good news is, YouTube also featured the vintage commercials. Saturday Supercade was an hour long show, and each episode featured four segments... this month, we talk about an episode that features Frogger, Donkey Kong, QBert, and Donkey Kong Jr. And it couldn't be clearer that they took unrelated scripts and did a find/replace to add in video game stuff.

Cole is a down and out MMA fall guy who happens to be the heir to a great line of ninja warriors. There's also an interdimensional martial arts tournament that Sonya Blade and Jax are investigating. And Kano is here, too. Can the heroes of Earthrealm save the world, again, for the first time?

This month we bring you a discussion of two cartoons based on Sonic the Hedgehog, both released in 1993.

First, we talk about "The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog", which aired in syndication on weekdays. Specifically, we talk about the episode "Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad", which gives the origin story for two of the show's annoying villains.

Next, we talk about "Sonic the Hedgehog", or Sonic SatAm, which aired on ABC during their Saturday morning programming block. This is the darker, more serious, more boring one. Sonic works alongside the freedom fighters of Knothole village to thwart the grim plots of Dr. Robotnik. Did we mention that it's boring?

The arcade hit Dragon's Lair was already more cartoon than game, so you'd think it wouldn't be hard to push it all the way to one side and make an animated series out of it. The problem is, you also have to have plots, and dialogue, and all kinds of hard things. This show ended up being one of the more boring things we've covered for Adaptation Decay, and that's saying something.

A wise man once warned me: If you die in the game, you die in real life. That man was someone speaking in a trailer for this movie, and that's why I've never died in a game. "Stay Alive" is a movie that not a lot of people remember, because it's very bad. Some young people discover an unreleased survival horror-ish game. The problem is, anyone who dies in the game is killed in a similar way by supernatural forces. So the friends must work together to learn where to game came from, and figure out how to lift its curse.

Suffering from a lot of the problems you'd expect to find in a low budget PG-13 slasher film, Stay Alive does have some fun surprises and over the top performances. But it's a lot more fun to talk about than watch.

This month is a rare split episode, because our initial plan would have resulted in an episode that was too short!

First, we cover the 2013 comic book adaptation of Plants vs. Zombies. It's a cute kids' comic about two plucky youngsters to team up with Crazy Dave and his mutant plants to stop the zombies from taking over Neighborville. Is it profound? Not really. But it's a great way to read some cute jokes and see charming drawings of those already charming plants.

The back half of the episode takes a surreal turn as we talk about the 1982 Pac-Man cartoon. Animated by Hanna-Barbera, this is the first cartoon based on a video game, and boy do they make some serious leaps as to what kind of world Pac-Man lives in, and what kinds of adventures he gets up to. It's a sight to behold.

This month we watch and discuss Wreck-It Ralph, a Disney animated film from 2012. It has a great cast and works in some very fun video game in-jokes before heading into a soggy middle section that kind of drags things down. John C. Riley's performance obviously runs away with the show, but the other big names are no slouches.

This digital comic was created by Valve to coincide with the final Left 4 Dead DLC and show us how the stories of the original four survivors began and ended. Over the course of four issues, Bill, Francis, Louis, and Zoey are captured by the military and escape a horrible fate before deciding what their endgame is. It's a fun comic that integrates well with the game, and highlights how good Valve can be at storytelling when they decide to make things.

Even though Mortal Kombat is pretty juvenile, it makes zero sense to create a childrens' cartoon based on the property. So this show from 1996 is already on a bad foot. Additionally, it's also extremely bad. The animation and blocking are poor, the dialogue is 90% cheesy one-liners, and too much of the runtime is taken up by dogfighting in dragon jets. Wait, did you not know there were jets?

Get ready for this to be slightly more positive than you expect. When the trailer for Doom: Annihilation came out, we were shocked at how bad it looked. The full product isn't actually "good", but there's some SyFy Original fun to be had here. It's cheap and it lacks subtlety, and it's a vague re-telling of Doom 3 through the eyes of the chosen religious soldier Joan Dark. Like I said, it isn't subtle.

Tom Hanks takes a leading role in a story about a college student who loses track of the distinction between fantasy and reality, and his impossibly rich and preppy friends try to lie to the police so they can save him themselves.

This isn't a podcast, it's an act of violence. To celebrate the season, we found three extremely onerous Winter Holiday themed episodes of Nintendo cartoons from the 90s.

First and most awfully, we bring you an episode of the Donkey Kong Country cartoon called https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8sh_W5siH4 ("The Kongo Bongo Festival of Lights"). DK is bad at doing gifts, and one of the lizards is lonely enough to blow up the world.

Second, we look at the Super Mario World cartoon where our heroes try to civilize cave men by making them Christian in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNXRMguW41w ("The Night Before Cave Christmas").

Third, we go back to the Super Mario Super Show to talk about "Koopa Klaus", mostly because it was on the same YouTube video as the other Mario episode.

We hate this so much, you guys.

We wanted to cover something good after taking a dive on The Wizard last month, but a tragic miscommunication led to us covering Uwe Boll's House of the Dead instead. We're always shocked when terrible things live up to their terrible reputations, but believe us when we say this movie is preternaturally awful. It deserves all of the scorn it's gotten, and no claim of "it's all a joke!" will save it.

A long time ago, it was very novel to see video games in other media. This was the appeal of Nick Arcade, another topic we covered on this show. But not even that novelty can save a bad script, and boy howdy, have we got a doozy. Corey breaks his little brother Jimmy out of an institution in order to drag him across the country and play video games for money. They meet another unsupervised pre-teen who drags them into a life of crime, as Bad Dad, the adult son, and the Kidhunter follow their tracks.

Resident Evil: Degeneration takes place shortly after RE4, and it has Leon and Claire teaming up to clean up another T-virus mess. Also a mess: this movie. It's confusing and boring, and we ended up wishing it was just a game instead.

Titan Comics doesn't have a great track record with Soulsborne properties. Their Dark Souls comics are bad and weird, as we discussed in a long-ago episode of Bonfireside Chat. So we're pleasantly surprised to say that their take on Bloodborne actually works! A few hiccups aside, it's a good supplement to the story and world of Bloodborne, with an attractive art style and fantastic last issue. So, listen in to learn the particulars.

So we're pleasantly surprised to say that their take on Bloodborne actually works! A few hiccups aside, it's a good supplement to the story and world of Bloodborne, with an attractive art style and fantastic last issue. So, listen in to learn the particulars.

The problem with adapting something that is such a pastiche is that you risk just making another version of whatever inspired the pastiche. When Hollywood set out to adapt Max Payne, which itself is an homage to crime and noir films, they avoided that. Instead, they made a really mediocre mid-2000s action movie and profoundly miscast it.

Are you ready for some garbage!? Holy moly, this Adam Sandler movie about invading alien video game characters is just straight up gutter-leavin's. Its humor is outdated, the deliveries are halfhearted, and the visual effects are ugly and confusing. Thankfully, Peter Dinklage is in about 1/4 of the movie to brighten things up. Otherwise, this nostalgia bomb is a complete dud.

We aim for variety on this show. We don't want to fall into a rut of just covering bad video game movies. Sometimes we want to cover bad video game music, too. Mortal Kombat mania produced a lot of cultural output, but nothing matches the sheer idiocy of Mortal Kombat: The Album, by The Immortals, a side project of Lords of Acid. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL577E545387C04A3E (You need to experience it for yourself to understand just how execrable a novelty techno dance album can be.) I don't think we've dunked on anything harder in the whole run of our shows.

It was a fixture for kids 1992. Every issue of Nintendo Power didn't just bring far-too-optimistic coverage of the games available on Nintendo's hardware, but it also brought another installment of Link's adventures through Hyrule. Nintendo Power worked with Shotaro Ishinomori to bring the events of A Link to the Past to life... but the problem is, he didn't do a very good job. Attractive character design and coloring is cold comfort compared with the dorky script and bad pacing. Link is sleepy, and so are we!

This episode takes us back to the Paul W.S. Anderson well for a movie that's much more fun than Resident Evil. The fate of our world hangs in the balance as extradimensional beings battle it out in the tournament of Mortal Kombat. This movie is cheesy, goofy, brainless, and not high art. But man, is it fun to talk about.

The year was 1994, and cartoons could still be sexist. Of course we'd lead with that, because we're us, but it's remarkable how quickly this cartoon goes from 0 to "whoa" in that regard. Beyond that, the Mega Man cartoon is a very pretty commercial for some very good toys that espouses some very muddled and retrograde values. Tune in to hear us talk about the first three episodes!

You can't help but feel a little bad for Buckner and Garcia. They wrote a fun song about an arcade game they liked, and ended up being forever branded as a novelty act and a one-hit wonder. The record label railroaded them into making an album full of video game songs to take advantage of the popularity of their single, "Pac-Man Fever". What they ended up creating was a very strange beast: full of overly literal lyrics about gameplay and embarrassingly dated musical genre sendups... but also full of catchy hooks and well-used samples.

It's a bit of a stretch to call this album an adaptation, but it's a memorable time capsule from the arcade boom of the early 80s. Also, we really like talking about music.

Let's flirt with success, as we look at 2006's Silent Hill movie. Obviously Kole is down, since this contains prolonged sequences that perfectly encapsulate the disorientation and horror of wandering around a haunted town. However, this movie falls from its high highs to shit the bed with boring cult nonsense. Tune in to hear exactly what went wrong, even though this is generally one of our most positive episodes of this show.

This adaptation came out of nowhere, but apparently it's been coming for a long time. Back in 2007, Konami reached out to Warren Ellis to write a movie script for them, adapting Castlevania to the screen. Ten years later, that movie became a Netflix series. And people seem to love it.

If only it was that easy. Because what we have here is a continuation of Summer Throwdown season, where our opinion is split on whether this is a good TV show, a good adaptation, or neither.

It was supposed to be a massive achievement in filmmaking. The premier video game studio had set its sights on making a CGI movie that would trick you into thinking you were looking at actual people. But that wasn't the right thing to chase.

Despite its star studded cast, we found very little to love in this movie that's both a bad story and a bad adaptation. Come listen to how this fell apart, and almost took Square with it.

This is the big one... 1993's Super Mario Bros. was the first video game movie, and it certainly set a... tone... for the quality of things to come. It's almost universally reviled, and it's been talked to death by people a lot smarter than us.

However, revisiting this movie directed by monsters has revealed something surprising: While it's a horrible adaptation, it's really fun to watch. The casting is ridiculous, the set and costume design is completely wrong, and it plays fast and loose with the source material in ways that make it a fascinating watch.

Recorded to coincide with our coverage of the original Tomb Raider game on Watch Out for Fireballs!, this episode covers perhaps the best adaptation we've seen yet. That's right, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, the Angelina Jolie movie from 2001, is worth watching.

Of course it's brainless. The action is dumb, and the way it's choreographed and shot reeks of "The Matrix just came out". The accents are all over the place. But it's fun, breezy, and faithful to the source material in a way that has proven to be rare in the film medium. Listen in for the scoop, and maybe give this one a rental.

It had to happen eventually: we'd have to cover an Uwe Boll movie. It's probable that you've read a lot of breakdowns of Boll's ineptitude, but nothing beats getting a first hand taste. This is one of the worst movies we've ever seen.

Alone in the Dark is about as successful as an adaptation as it is as a film... not at all. You have a main character who dresses like Edward Carnby, and some supernatural stuff happening, but that's where it stops. Instead, we dredge the Z-list to create an action movie where Christian Slater, Stephen Dorff, and Tara Reid grapple to see who has the least charisma. Seriously, this thing is a master class.

The commonalities between the Maniac Mansion TV show and its source material are scant and superficial. In that way, it's a very poor adaptation. However, you can listen in to hear us praise the show's completely bizarre tone, and strange, uber-Canadian SCTV sense of humor.

A good sequel has similar requirements to a good adaptation: It must honor the source material. While Advent Children takes us back to the same world as the beloved Final Fantasy VII, and shows us many of the same characters, it ignores and squanders the good things about that world, and those characters. What's left is characters who forgot their growth, fighting the same battles over and over again through incomprehensible and interminable actions sequences. It's the pits.

The secret was friendship. The secret was always friendship, but we just forgot... over and over again... in this premium show dedicated to bad adaptations of video games. Or bad movie sequels to video games, like the 2005 movie "Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children".

Get your asses to Mars in this second episode of our premium show dedicated to bad adaptations of videos games. It's all about the 2005 movie "Doom".

We really didn't intend to do another Resident Evil movie, but here we are. Take Doom, remove all of the action, and take away Hell. Add in ridiculous non-science about extra chromosomes encoding the human soul, and you have just another zombie movie with an incredibly ill-advised first-person segment.

This inaugural episode of our premium show dedicated to bad adaptations of video games is all about the 2002 Paul W.S. Anderson movie "Resident Evil."

Gary and Kole go in-depth on how Resident Evil fails as an action movie AND as a Resident Evil adaptation, hitting it hard for being an incoherent and insulting mess.
