Demystifying Strategy

You hear the word strategy thrown around all of the time, but do you really know what it means for you as a leader, especially as someone who is leading a business.

I want to help you answer what is strategy? Where does strategy come from? Finally, what are the essentials of developing and then implementing a strategy?

If you can answer those three questions you will be well on your way to mastering strategy as it pertains to you specifically.

Strategy starts with your vision, then your goals (or milestones) are pulled from your vision, and your strategy is built to show how you plan to get there. The essentials of that are: first, you must know where it is you are playing, and how it is you are going to win there; second, how you will play to your strengths, and managing what matters; and third, think it through.

Your leadership inside of your business is vital, I cannot stress that enough. Building a strategy to see your goals achieved and your vision fulfilled won’t be easy, but I know that you are up to the challenge. Even if you need help from a coach, that is a growth opportunity for you, and you will still be up to surpassing any challenge.

My challenge to you after you listen to this episode, take a look at your business and your leadership by answering these questions. Do you have a robust vision written out? Have you pulled goals from that vision? Does your strategy give you the how to achieve your goals and fulfill your vision?

Capturing Lessons Learned

We all know that it’s important to capture lessons learned, and apply what we discovered so we can improve and grow. I think we can all agree on that.

But are you are doing that? Are you taking the time to record the lessons you’ve learned? What kind of system are you using to make sure nothing is lost? Or do you simply wing it?

I want to give you some questions to consider and send you on a mission of discovery. What is the importance of looking back? Why would you want to do this?

How often should you be looking to lay hold of lessons learned, or the frequency of writing down these important lessons?

What data are you capturing when I set yourself to this significant task?

I am a firm believer that you need to try things out for a while and then decide what’s working and what isn’t. Some things you will see need changes sooner, and you should make those changes quickly. These are any situations that come up where you see the immediate negative impact and a course correction is required.

For everything else, it takes time to truly understand the significance of what course of action you have chosen. It may be the right course of action but is in need of adjustments. Or, it’s completely wrong and needs an overhaul or thrown out altogether. That’s why you make changes to what you're doing after longer intervals. This gives you enough time to really understand and be able to make a clear evaluation of what you’ve decided to do.

How to Ensure Your Values are Actionable

I am revisiting the topic of values that you lay out for your team or your organization. Values look so great boldly displayed on the office walls, they inspire us to be better at what we do. Or do they?

With that, there are a couple of very important questions. First, what is behind the value, the definition? Second, what does the value look like when you put it into action?

When companies start to survey employees, what is often uncovered is that the behavior of executives, and even other employees, don’t line up with what is described as being valued.

I want to dig into these questions, and again demonstrate to you what is taking place after you produce that wonderful mission, vision, and values.

Values can be turned into behaviors without being a negative thing.
You must provide a detailed enough definition so there isn't space for interpretation.
You must hold yourself and everyone else accountable.

Let’s talk about building a conflict resilient team. How difficult is it for you to resolve conflict? Most of the time confrontation takes on a combative feel and tone that puts one side on the defensive, which only leads to counterattacks. That isn’t helpful. I have seen unhealthy conflict resolution far more than I have seen it done in a healthy way.

This goes back to motivation. Do you want to be right? Or do you want to move beyond the contention, grow, and maintain the relationship?

That means you have to understand why conflict resolution is important? Then, how to walk through it in a healthy manner. That is the real goal of this episode, to give you the tools to enter into and resolve conflict where the outcome is maintained relationships.

3 mistakes even smart entrepreneurs make

Entrepreneurs can have all of the qualities needed to be successful like drive, passion, big ideas, confidence, great execution with follow-through, but none of these are enough to replace vision. Yes, you heard me correctly. Those qualities are great things to possess and can power your mission, but your vision is the guiding light to get you to the better future you’re dreaming of.

You have to first recognize the possibility you won’t see all of the opportunities before you and therefore pass on them because you don’t see the forest for the trees. This happens most often when people don’t have enough big-picture vision to understand all of the opportunities available to them.

This is a natural tendency when you don’t have a vision. That is why I want to talk about the three dangerous potentials to your business when you don’t craft a vision, and looking at the possibilities associated with each.

How to set goals and the goal-setting framework

Is goal setting a mystery to you? Do you think you have it figured out? Today we are going to discuss goal setting in conjunction with your vision, the reasons you don’t achieve your goals, then the how-to, the steps you need to take, and the framework you will use when you write out your goals.

There is a lot of debate about goal setting. I have seen social media posts that say you shouldn’t focus on goals because it could hurt your mindset. Then there are others that say goal setting is an essential part of being successful.

So what’s the right answer? My belief is that you must be setting goals, however, there is an order to things.

How crafting a vision will make a difference for you

Those are great questions, and I am always excited to hear them because I know that the entrepreneur asking them is thinking about what is significant and they are thinking about the future.

As an entrepreneur, I know there is nothing more annoying than not knowing what to do next. Then, if you can’t figure it out you just avoid it because that is taking up too much of your brain space and distracting you from what’s urgent and important.

You know that casting vision is important, so you have chosen not to avoid it. But, how does it work? Is it as simple as saying this is what my dream is, so off I go in that direction?

There is often a sort of short-sightedness that plagues entrepreneurs surrounding their unwillingness to look at and examine vision, and then to cast vision. In this episode, I want to look at the three reasons why entrepreneurs avoid the subject of vision.

What moon shot is hidden in you?

President John F. Kennedy understood the importance of vision, and he cast a vision so audacious it took years to become a reality.

And on July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped foot on the moon. He was famously recorded saying, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”

In this episode, I want to talk to you about what it looks like to create powerful people and the importance of doing so.

Creating powerful people should be part of the focus of any leader. Without your team members being empowered and owning not just their work, but owning the team’s work and the culture of the team, you can’t expect to produce a high-performing team. You will need to be continually following up with your team members, creating space for them to innovate your current products, services, or processes, while also motivating them to dream and create. You must do this with your people understanding and believing that they will not be punished for failing, but celebrated for “failing forward” and learning. Knowing that punishment is off the table is a powerful way to motivate your team members to own every aspect of your team, and they will fearlessly protect the culture you build with them.
