This special A Friend of Mine episode is a live roving interview from the 45th Murrumbateman Field Days – a testament to the power of community support and collaboration. More than just a showcase of agricultural innovation and local craftsmanship, the field days brings together people from across the region, reinforcing the strong ties that bind the community.

Held on October 19 and 20, the Field Days offers everything from advanced farming equipment to locally produced goods, all set in a relaxed, family-friendly environment that embodies the spirit of Murrumbateman.

Murrumbateman is a town in the Southern Tablelands of New South Wales. It is on the Barton Highway, about 30 kilometres north-west of Canberra, and is part of the Yass Valley Shire.

Surrounded by rolling green vineyards in the heart of cool climate wine country, the Murrumbateman region is home to 20 world-class boutique wineries.

At times you will hear the sounds of our surroundings whether it's some of the 15,000 people in attendance, machinery, carnival rides, livestock, or even a helicopter. These sounds make it seem like you’re standing right there with us, sharing a quick catch-up.

Jess Templeton from The Rural Nursery shares her journey from childhood weekends spent in her parents' rural supply store to launching her own plant business, highlighting the importance of family support and passion for gardening. I was recently presenting workshops at the NSW Rural Women’s Gathering in Harden Murrumburrah. As part of the workshop, I invited attendees to take the microphone and be part of a mock podcast interview.

OAK is all about amplifying women's voices and helping them gain the confidence to speak up and share their unique stories. Opportunities like these – where women can practice, get feedback, and feel supported – are rare, and it's a privilege to create that space for them.

This interview was too good to not publish. In this special, very short episode, Sharlee Cassidy shares a little insight into launching Windalee Flower Farm in the scenic Yass Valley.

Keep in mind, there was minimal prepping on both sides of the microphone, and unfortunately, we only had a small window of time.

Kate is a co-owner of Little Tuna, a company leading the charge in sustainability within Australia's seafood industry. She is also this year’s AgriFutures Rural Women's Award Queensland Winner.

In this episode, we dive into Kate's journey, from navigating the complexities of running a business that champions Australian-caught tuna to her inspiring persistence in applying for the AgriFutures award - not once, but three times.

Kate's project for the award focuses on advocating for locally sourced, sustainable seafood and bringing Australian tuna back to our supermarket shelves. With a background fortified by her participation in the Seafood Industry Leadership Program, Kate shares how her experiences have shaped her confidence and leadership within the industry.

This is a special episode on the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award with a focus on resilience and perseverance in the face of initial setbacks. Nikki Davey shares how a supportive network encouraged her to reapply despite her doubts, emphasising the significance of community in personal and professional development.

Nikki is the co-founder and CEO of Grown Not Flown, an innovative platform connecting local flower farmers with consumers, transforming the floral industry by promoting sustainability and supporting small-scale growers. In two short years, Nikki has not only expanded her platform but is also gearing up to host her first conference aimed at micro and small-scale flower producers.

In this episode, we talk about her decision to reapply for the AgriFutures’s Rural Women’s Award after making it as a state finalist in 2022.

Despite her doubts, Nikki shares how her supportive network, including key mentors, encouraged her to try again the following year. She opens up about the fears and self-judgment that accompanied her second application, but more importantly, she highlights the value of persistence. Her story is a powerful reminder that success is not always about the win—sometimes, it's about the growth and the community that propels you forward.

Nikki now has the crown of 2023 AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award Victoria Winner, and most impressively, the overall National Winner.

REFLECTIONS ON THIS EPISODE

Listening back to this episode, one of the standout lessons from Nikki’s journey is that sometimes the first try doesn’t lead to the outcome we hope for, but it can lay the foundation for something greater. Reapplying for the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award wasn’t just about winning - it was about learning, growing and realising what more she had to offer. That persistence, the courage to try again, is something we can all relate to, whether in business or life.

We referred to that first application as a ‘first draft.’ That’s something I think we can all take on board, because so much of life is like that first draft - imperfect, but necessary to build on. The key is to keep refining, keep growing, and not let fear stop us from submitting that ‘second draft.’ It’s through these iterations that we not only improve, but truly understand our own potential.

Finally, as Nikki shared, it’s not always about the title or the win - sometimes, the real victory comes from the journey itself. It’s about redefining success, building a supportive network, and embracing the process, no matter the outcome. Every step, every 'first draft' brings us closer to becoming the person we’re meant to be, and that’s something worth celebrating.

I feel like these sounds make you feel like you’re standing right there with us having a quick catch up.

Through these conversations, this episode showcases the resilience and innovation within the agricultural community, inspiring listeners to appreciate the stories behind the products we consume.

First, we meet Emma Kennedy, who shares the story of how she and her husband launched Kennedy Food Produce amidst the challenges of a drought. Emma's venture into popcorn production not only provided an alternative income stream but also offered an educational experience about the origins of food. Her passion for connecting people to the source of their food is evident as she describes the joy of seeing customers' surprise when they realise popcorn can be freshly made from a cob. This is our most downloaded episode this year. First published on our podcast She Makes News, this is an extended interview with host Kimberley Furness and Lottie Rae from The Studio - Trangie. Lottie recently sold the business and spoke to She Makes News about the experience, her advice for other business owners and what's next after The Studio.

Every other day we see a small business close its doors, typically a result of the difficult economic landscape. This story is a little different. Lottie was excited to list the business for sale so she could dedicate time to an unfinished chapter as an artist. But more interestingly, the bush-based business is thriving!

The sale of The Studio is a testament to the power of organic success. By allowing the business to grow and evolve in a natural and sustainable way, Lottie was able to create a thriving and profitable enterprise. While the decision to sell the business may mark the end of one chapter, Lottie is filled with excitement and anticipation for what lies ahead.

In a raw and candid BONUS interview, Lottie shares with us her start up story, why the pandemic was the “best thing” to happen to her business, what retailers can do during tough times, and her plans now that The Studio has sold.

Art and resilience with multisensory artist Cara-Ann Simpson

In 2017, Queensland artist and curator, Cara-Ann Simpson spent almost a year in hospital with a severe brain infection. She was later diagnosed with multiple sclerosis and neurosarcoidosis. Cara-Ann had to relearn to walk and speak clearly. Creativity gave her back a sense of belonging.

At the rehab centre, Cara-Ann’s partner, Michael, would take her into the gardens where she would pick flowers and then arrange them in plastic cups back in her room. This was the beginning of her way back to art practice, and of regaining hope for a future.

The practice followed her home and grew into the in-person and online exhibition, Furari Flores (latin for Stealing Flowers).

Cara-Ann has been an artist for over 18 years. She’s also a curator, educator, author and consultant. Her background encompasses the arts, culture, heritage, tourism, festival and land management sectors.

In this episode, Cara-Ann shares her with us her childhood, the challenges and opportunities in pursuing a career as a professional artist, her health journey and its impact on her art, and her latest exhibition which is a multisensory experience that engages sight, sound, touch, and smell, providing a unique and immersive art experience. Cara-Ann also gives us a little insight into living in a shearing shed.

The art of handcrafted candles with Sarah Ryan, Quandialla Candle Co

Artist and maker Sarah Ryan puts the perfect blend of nostalgia and vintage charm into Quandialla Candle Co.

Rather than be stressed by burning the business candle at both ends, she has created a way of working to suit her lifestyle and her brain.

Sarah’s handcrafted soy candles hit the market over a decade ago. It’s a one person show run on the family farm by the artist and former secondary art school teacher.

Sarah’s small batch candles suit a range of décors, while giving the nod to the vintage and intricate design of the nouveau art deco periods.

Sarah stays interested in the candles because they offer her an evolving creative project. There’s always a new product range, designs to tweak and scents to conjure.

From special education teacher to business owner making a difference in the NDIS space

Kazz Rasmussen started her career a special education teacher, working in the classroom and consultancy. However, she soon realised that she wanted to make a bigger impact and provide more support to individuals with disabilities.

Kazz's journey to becoming a business owner began in 2016 when she took a year off teaching to care for her ill father. During this time, there was an upswing in parents seeking Kazz’s guidance to navigate the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Although she had no prior knowledge of the NDIS, Kazz decided to give it a try and never looked back.

Kazz & Co - an NDIS registered disability and special needs support service - now has over 30 staff supporting individuals with mental health challenges who are striving for a fulfilling independent life. The Bendigo-based business also offers tailored independent living programs and individualised support in educational environments.

What sets Kazz apart as a business owner is her empathy and genuine care for her clients. She understands the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and their families, being a mother of three, with one child diagnosed with autism. This personal experience has given Kazz a unique perspective and a deep understanding of the needs of her clients.

In this episode, Kazz shares her transition from school teacher to business owner. We discuss finding the role of an accountant, the importance of values, hiring staff, investing in business coaches and marketing for support and growth, imposter syndrome, as well as navigating the NDIS system.

A real estate career with heart with Josie Caruso

There’s a stereotype about real estate agents. Josie Caruso doesn’t really fit that mould.

In the first chapter of her successful real estate career, Josie had to navigate a cut-throat male-dominated industry that shunned emotion and vulnerability. This was while Josie and her husband were going through IVF, an intensely emotional rollercoaster.

As a young mum, Josie sensed that she didn't have that fire in the belly or the local networks to get back into the game. At that time she felt unready, behind the eight ball.

So she returned to the workforce in more nine to five roles. Josie worked across sales and customer service, and she studied counselling, leveraging her strengths as a lateral thinking generalist and people person.

But nothing ever resonated quite like real estate, and so she eventually embarked on real estate career chapter two - now working at Barry Plant Real Estate Bendigo.

Turning adversity into financial success with Hayley DeJong

Hayley DeJong's journey from childhood financial hardship to founding a successful mortgage brokerage, is testament to her determination and commitment to overcome the challenges that life throws our way.

In her early 20s, Hayley set her sights on a position at Bendigo Bank. She became a persistent caller, reaching out every couple of weeks to inquire about job openings until her relentless determination earned her an interview. Asked what she would do if she didn't get the job, she confidently replied, "I'll call you next week".

Her tenacity eventually opened a door at Bendigo Bank, where she seized opportunities and climbed the professional ladder.

Leaving her management position at the bank in 2014, Hayley founded Proactive Finance Group, a mortgage brokerage in Bendigo. The now team of three are a trusted financial support crew specialising in home loans, investment loans, asset finance and commercial finance.

Hayley acknowledges her role as more than just a mortgage broker. She has a genuine interest in helping people succeed and seek financial empowerment.

In this episode, Hayley shares her challenging upbringing in a lower socioeconomic area to becoming a successful mortgage broker, the challenges of hiring the right team members and the growth that comes from trusting others to contribute to your business. Capturing life stories for generations with Dimity Brassil

There’s a whole generation whose lives are not on social media. Like a personal and private podcast, A Lasting Tale records the life stories of the elderly and the dying, gifting their families with insight and the memory and intimacy of a loved one’s voice.

When Dimity Brassil’s father and sister both died in a relatively short period, it was their voices that were achingly difficult to recall.

In 2018, Dimity pulled up a pew with her mum Anne, to record Anne’s life story and capture her unique voice.

Little did Dimity and Anne know that they would create a movement empowering older Australians to share their own life stories.

A Lasting Tale has now recorded over 1,500 life stories through professional interviews, a free mobile app, workshops and community programs. The business has over 40 interviewers across metropolitan and regional Australia and is growing rapidly.

In this episode, Dimity shares her background in journalism and adult education, as well as the personal experiences that led her to start A Lasting Tale. She discusses the importance of capturing the stories of older generations, who often have valuable lessons and experiences to share. Dimity also talks about the challenges of scaling the business and the importance of maintaining quality as the company grows.

From outback cattle stations to country retail store with Karen O'Brien

For Karen O’Brien, opening a homewares store was a dream in the making for many years.

Karen and her husband Jed lived in the outback for 15 years managing cattle stations whilst raising their young family. As their four children grew older, Karen began to think about what she could do beyond being a mum. The idea of starting an online business emerged. However, the limited access to resources in the remote area put this idea on hold.

On a trip to Victoria, Karen drove through the historic town of Yackandandah - it was love at first sight. Six years ago, the family moved from the Kimberley to the small rural village with its natural charm and historic appeal. It was in Yackandandah that Karen launched her business.

Vivienne Cate, named after her daughter, offers a unique curated collection of cowhides, sheepskin, leather bags, hats, fashion and homewares - with a focus on natural materials and handmade products that Karen personally selects.

Karen started with selling cow hides online, but as the business grew, she realised the importance of interacting with customers in person.

Karen converted a small office space into a display room and eventually found a shop front space on the main street. Vivienne Cate grew rapidly to the point it was “bursting out onto the streets” before Karen moved into a bigger space..

In this episode, Karen shares her journey of moving from the Kimberley to Yackandandah, her passion for entrepreneurship, and the challenges she faced in starting her own business. Karen also discusses the beauty of Yackandandah, hidden gems in the town, and the importance of supporting local businesses.

Farm stay with purpose with Louise Freckelton, Kestel Nest EcoHut

When you arrive at Kestrel Nest EcoHut, an off-grid, off-line and eco-luxury farm stay perched above a rocky mountain stream and surrounded by 360 degree views of rolling farmland, you can feel yourself exhale.

Louise Freckelton, along with her husband David, are custodians of 840 acres of unceded Wiradjuri Land where they conduct small-scale, ethical farming with the conservation of one of Australia’s critically endangered forest types. The property also holds great cultural significance, and a cultural assessment was conducted to honour the land's original owners and their knowledge.

On this stunning parcel of land, near Adelong in the Riverina Highlands of NSW, is the award winning Kestrel Nest EcoHut.

Kestrel Nest was built after a long and meticulous design process. Louise wanted a simple open-plan design that made one feel connected to the outdoors.

The building was initially half-built when the January 2020 Black Summer fires swept through the area, burning two-thirds of the property. Despite the challenges, the strategic location of Kestrel Nest allowed for extensive firefighting efforts, and the building was ultimately saved.

The hut is named after the magnificent Kestrel - the only bird seen near the eco hut for two weeks following the fires.

In this episode, Louise discusses the inspiration behind Kestrel Nest including the challenges and process of building the eco hut using recycled and local materials. She speaks about the significance of acknowledging and preserving the cultural heritage of the land. Louise also reflects on her transferable skills such as her love for nature and her background in marketing and communications.

Building businesses from the Ground Up with Michelle Rossiter

Michelle Rossiter is reluctant to call herself an entrepreneur but when you look back at her business journey, she has a knack of seeing a gap, filling it and doing so with great success.

Michelle left school at 15 to become an apprentice hairdresser. At 21, she set out to travel around Australia, practicing her hairdressing skills along the way. It wasn’t until the terrorist attacks of September 11 2001, that Michelle felt a strong desire to return home and be near family. She soon relocated to Tumut, where her sister was living. It was in Tumut that Michelle's entrepreneurial spirit was sparked.

Recognising a lack of eateries in their hometown, Michelle took the initiative to establish a cafe of her own. She successfully launched The Coach House. Although the cafe has changed ownership over time, it continues to flourish.

Not stopping there, Michelle ventured into additional entrepreneurial pursuits, founding another cafe and operating a mobile coffee and pancake van. However, wanting a job that was less labour-intensive, Michelle decided to pursue her passion for outdoor riding. This led to opening Ground Up in 2017.

Ground Up stock a full range of bikes that cater to all needs, from seasoned professionals to beginners. The business outgrew its first store, and is now the largest bike store in the NSW Snowy Valleys region.

In this episode, recorded amongst the bikes at Ground Up, Michelle shares her business journey along with the challenges of running a retail business, the importance of a strong online presence, and the impact of the pandemic on the bike industry. The mum of three also talks about balancing work and family commitments.

This episode is part of our special rural NSW podcast van tour. It was an absolute delight to meet these women in person and explore the place they live, work and drive change.

Women take the reins at Apiam Bendigo Cup

The Bendigo Cup is possibly the most iconic event on the Bendigo social calendar.

I grew up not far from the Bendigo Jockey Club. On a clear day, you could hear the call of a race. And like many local school kids, I’ve run around the race track as part of cross country, a tradition that I also share with my kids.

As an adult, I’ve dressed up and enjoyed a public holiday at the races with friends many times.

This year, I have the honour of being ambassador of the Apiam Bendigo Cup, Wednesday 1 November. It’s given me a behind the scenes look at the races, and the opportunity to meet some of the incredible women in the industry.

I recently sat down with local trainer Jess Gleeson, Bendigo Jockey Club Commercial Manager Sue Opie, and former jockey and now clerk of scales Courtney Pace.

Jess moved from Ireland to Australia and speaks about the difference between the two countries, how she managed her pregnancy while being a trainer, and what she really wanted to be when she grew up.

Sue gives us an insight into her early career as a business woman in Greece as the owner of a bar/nightclub/internet cafe, and the skills needed for successful partnerships.

And Courtney shares her passion for the racing industry which she has been involved in at 14 years of age, and what it takes to be a female jockey.

Historic church reimagined with Merrin Glasgow

In a quaint township named Coolamon, a name derived from the Wiradjuri language and their word meaning water basin or water dish, is an Ark; The Ark Coolamon. A luxury boutique accommodation situated in a restored historic church.

Owners Merrin and Philip had a lightbulb moment in late 2019 to give the Old Methodist church a different purpose.

Over the years, the church has served various purposes, including being leased as a dance studio, hosting niche music concerts, private dinners and small weddings. The couple eventually decided to restore and convert the space into boutique accommodation. This decision coincided with retirement from their secondary teaching careers.

The two year project gave Merrin and Philip the opportunity to utilise their skill sets in research, networking and collaboration; Merrin’s passion for gardening, interior styling, preserving seasonal produce; and their combined love for hospitality, sharing stories and focus on wellbeing.

In this episode, recorded in the 95 year old church with its cathedral ceilings, Merrin shares her love for old buildings and the challenge of adapting them, the luxury of now having time and flexibility to pursue her creativity, the establishment of a women in business network in her region and more.

From market stall to main street with Fisher & Farmer

Fisher & Farmer is not just a homewares store, it's a lifelong dream brought to life for owner Melissa Corbett.

Mel always had the vision of opening her own business, and her background in public relations has been a valuable asset in making that dream come true.

Mel's deep connection to her community led her to realise that her small town of Ganmain in rural NSW, could greatly benefit from a local homewares store, reducing the need for residents to travel to larger towns.

Fisher & Farmer started as a humble market stall in 2016. Over the years, it has grown into a small bricks and mortar store to now occupying the large space of the old supermarket in the main street of Ganmain.

Not only does Fisher and Farmer provide residents with homewares, gifts, and even a coffee shop, but it also attracts visitors and tourists to the town, boosting Ganmain's economy and putting it on the map.

Mel is here for the long run, committed to the success and growth of her business and community.

From law enforcement to gallery owner with Maggie Deall

Maggie Deall is not your typical artist. Based in Wagga Wagga, New South Wales, Maggie's days are now filled with a haven of colour and artistic expression. But her journey to this point has been anything but ordinary.

For the past two decades, Maggie has dedicated her life to public service as a sergeant in the NSW police force, where she supervised a team of officers and often found herself as a first responder. It was a demanding career that took its toll with Maggie facing the challenges of anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

When her psychologist suggested art therapy, Maggie had no idea her career was about to take a remarkable turn.

Maggie opened The Little Yellow House - Gallery and Studio in 2021.

After working in a male-dominated industry, Maggie yearned to create a safe space, not just for herself but for other women as well. She envisioned a gallery and studio space that would foster a vibrant community of creative women, providing them with a platform to share their artistic visions with the wider community.

In this episode, we sit down with Maggie in her own studio, surrounded by the very art that helped her heal and flourish. We delve into her experiences with art therapy, the transferable skills from law enforcement to business owner, and so much more.

Many successful small businesses start life from the kitchen table, and Sarah Armstrong’s story is no different.

Sparked from a conversation overheard at her parent’s kitchen table after a night of rain, Sarah developed the SparkDrop app - a digital platform to store rainfall data and share it with the community.

The land has been Sarah’s whole upbringing. Sarah’s father, his father Sparky and his father before him have been thriving and surviving in farming for over 100 years in Australia.

It's Sarah’s grandfather, Don "Sparky" Armstrong, who is the inspiration behind the app’s name. The app is a way to continue her family’s legacy and share her love for the land.

In this candid and unedited conversation, Sarah shares with us the beginning of her app, the cost of developing one, how she handled an email glitch during launch week, marketing tactics and the special bond she has with her dad and grandfather.

A journey of foster care, adoption and empowering neurodivergent families

Fiona Landford and her husband Wayne have fostered 32 children and adopted four along with being biological parents to their daughter Jess.

Fiona’s career started out in special education. It was through her work and her children that she saw a growing need for services that would proactively support not only isolated and/or disadvantaged families but also neurodivergent children and their families.

Three of their adopted children identify as neurodivergent and to find professionals who were versed in neurodivergence, the impact of disability and also trauma-informed was a challenge - not to mention finding someone who understood the complexities of living in rural and regional Australia.

With the encouragement of others, Fiona retrained over a period of years and in 2016 established Courage Wisdom Change which empowers children, youth and adults with skills for positive change.

From her home in Kyneton, Victoria, Fiona shares with us her late career change, moving into counselling and unintentionally establishing herself as a neuro-affirming practice, why she is seeing more women identify as neurodivergent, the importance of looking after your mental health and wellbeing, and her highs and hurdles as a business owner.

From $80K debt to a multi-million dollar empire with Emma Williams from Socially Em

From her home in Western Australia, Emma Williams founded Maxx Marketing (formerly SociallyEm) at age 28. It is now a multi-million dollar empire powered by a team of more than 30 staff - 40% of whom are based in her home state of WA.

It hasn’t all been a smooth run to success. Prior Maxx Marketing, Emma lost her first business – along with a treasured friendship. Despite being $80,000 in debt and with no formal qualifications, SociallyEm was launched in 2018 with zero capital. Just one woman with drive, a solid work ethic, optimism and a passion to help others in a similar situation.

In four short years of business, Emma has launched Australia’s first Instagram networking event - with more than 5000 women attending 11 sold out national shows; built a signature sellout course that’s empowered more than 5000 women to successfully run their own businesses; created a seasonal online gift guide which to date has generated over $8 million in revenue for small businesses; sold out exclusive mindset retreats in Australia and Bali; won three gold industry awards and many more business achievements.

And that $80K debt. It’s paid off and her business now generates more than a $1million revenue each year - even during the pandemic.

Behind the scenes, Emma was dealing with emotional and physical demons as well as battling stage 4 endometriosis, something that consumed her every day with pain. The mum of three was scheduled for a hysterectomy at the age of 28 and it was during the pre-op tests that she was also diagnosed with cervical cancer.

One episode with Emma - my new best friend - is not enough but we have dug into a few areas of business and life.

Emma shares with us her business journey, her relationship with money and how it impacts her business decisions, she lifts the cover on what it costs to run her national events, provides insights into hiring staff, the importance of staying in your own lane and, of course, a couple of juicy social media tips.

Grace Larson - 2023 AgriFutures Rural Women's Award VIC Finalist

This is a special mini series featuring this year’s AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award Victorian finalists.

Grace Larson is a third generation nurse, and although she didn’t set out to follow in the footsteps of her grandmother and mother, she found herself drawn to the profession.

Through her 15 years experience working as a paediatric intensive care nurse, Grace knows how important timely access to services is on mortality rates of children experiencing traumatic injuries.

Grace recognised that patients who received CPR or first aid had better outcomes than those who did not, and identified first aid training as particularly critical to children in rural areas.

From her home in Kyneton, Grace formed The Sisterhood Project to mitigate the barriers of distance and affordability for parents and carers in rural areas, providing free access to essential paediatric first aid training for vulnerable groups, particularly in rural Australia. The mum of three hopes this will have a significant impact on child mortality rates in Australia.

Sarah Duncanson - 2023 AgriFutures Rural Women's Award VIC Finalist

Sarah is a paediatric critical care nurse at the Royal Children’s Hospital and has cared for many critically injured children and those with complex medical needs whose parents navigate the medical world from home every single day. Many of these children reside in regional and rural Australia.

As a rural mum of four, Sarah knows too well the difficulties that rural families have in accessing specialised paediatric care and it is her mission to bridge this gap to provide paediatric carer training and education to carers and parents of children regardless of their postcode.

Through her company PAEDS Education, Sarah is driven to reach the “unreachable” through hybrid and online training. She hopes this increased access to specialised training will improve support, reduce the burden of care, and improve the outcomes of children and their community.

The importance of being farm fit with Louise O'Neill

Slow flower movement blooming with Nikki Davey

Nikki Davey is a co-founder of Grown Not Flown - a digital platform supporting the slow flower movement to reduce flower miles, boost local economies and showcase the best our flower industry has to offer.

Launched in 2021 during the pandemic, Grown Not Flown started as a social media platform showcasing and promoting local farmers growing seasonal blooms. It quickly morphed into an app to facilitate an easier connection between growers and consumers.

Grown not Flown now boasts over 500 growers on the app and is in 14 different countries; there is nothing slow about this brands growth.

Nikki lives with her partner in Glenmore, a small rural hamlet in Victoria, and was this year named a Victorian finalist for the AgriFutures Rural Women’s Award.

Nikki shares with us the start up phases of Grown Not Flown, why it’s important to know where our flowers come from, the value in identifying transferrable skills, her recent learning of what it means to be neurodivergent, as well as her personal story of miscarriage.

Sweet success of Bendigo Brittle with Greta Donaldson

A desire for a change in pace and a life-long love of her grandmother’s cooking led burnt-out Melbourne PR executive Greta Donaldson to a new life, and a new business - Bendigo Brittle.

Greta was inspired to establish the business after whipping up a batch of peanut brittle for a family Christmas gathering. The brittle was a huge hit and she began to consider options for sale.

Bendigo Brittle has now established a strong following as Greta, and a small team of employees, offer her sweet treats from an uber cool confectionery cart at markets around Victoria as well as being in talks with supplying her brittle to a national airline.

Brikitta Kool-Daniels, mum of Australia’s newest NBA star Dyson Daniels

If you’re an NBA 2K23 gamer, you’ll have noticed there is a new player on the Pelicans roster and he hails from my hometown Bendigo in Central Victoria.

Australian basketballer Dyson Daniels is the latest star to be drafted into the NBA. The 19 year old went at number 8 to the New Orleans Pelicans and has signed a four year contract rumoured to be around $US25M with $US5.5M earned in his rookie season for 2022-23.

Of course, behind every successful athlete is a parent (or two in this case). Proud mum Brikitta Kool-Daniels, with her husband Ricky Daniels, have helped Dyson realise his dream of playing in the NBA.

Basketball talent runs in the family with eldest son Kai playing college basketball for Regis University and youngest son Dash recently named among Australia’s top 20 under 16 hoopers.

All three boys have played representative basketball which translates into many hours spent training and traveling. That in itself sounds like a full time job but somehow Brikitta and Ricky have managed to successfully run Bendigo’s best gym, D-Club, for over 20 years.

This one is a little different in that I travel around in my mobile podcast van, pull up at a location or event in regional and rural Australia and interview the people who are a part of that community. Generally, I’ve not known these people for more than five minutes but the van provides a cosy atmosphere for a comfortable conversation.

Sarah Stamm is an interior designer turned creator of handmade treasures. As the founder of Salisbury and Maude, Sarah creates exquisite, luxurious and beautiful wreaths, quilts and knitted keepsakes from her home in Beechworth, Victoria.

Sarah doesn’t take her creative life for granted. Aged 22, she was crossing the street in Sydney when she was run over by a bicycle courier. The nerves in her right arm were seriously damaged and she sustained a permanent 20 per cent loss of use in that arm and hand.

This is only one part of her incredible journey through life.

In a delving and honest conversation, Sarah takes us through the phases of her life from growing up in Albury, studying interior design, caring for loved ones who are terminally unwell, and letting go of ego. There are blissful moments and then others which Sarah looks back on with sadness.

A studio of happiness and hope with Patrina Roberts

Patrina Roberts and her family have a motto, ‘Always rainbows after rain… and then dance in the sunshine.’ It’s a motto their family adopted 11 years ago when their eldest was diagnosed with Leukaemia. Those words have provided strength and knowledge that life is so very short and such a gift.

Patrina recalls having to push through some very dark days, working three jobs to pay back the debt encountered to get treatment in Sydney which was over 500kms away from their home in Wagga Wagga.

One day, Patrina’s husband came home from his work as a courier to tell her about the perfect store he found in Junee, NSW.

In 24 hours, Patrina had made a decision and within two weeks they began working on the fit out and opened Studio On Sunshine, a handmade boutique. The business was open barley eight months before COVID hit Australia. It was an uphill battle to keep the doors open as the business unfortunately didn’t qualify for most grants. But Patrina and the business came out the other side thriving and more importantly, she has found balance and happiness.

Overcoming self limiting beliefs with Cas Watene

Cas Watene left her 9-5 job at 20 when she became too sick from her first pregnancy to keep working. She devoted her early 20s to raising her four kids.

Cas started in network marketing in 2013 quickly rising to top sales person in Australia with the company and earning incentive trips and decent commissions.

In 2018, she stumbled into cake decorating with no skills or qualifications and launched Cas’s Cakery. She has now built a reputable business locally in Emerald, Queensland, and internationally with more than 240K followers on Instagram.

Cas set a goal to earn enough so her husband could leave his mine job which she recently achieved.

Cas shares with us her journey, bringing her husband into the business and creating passive income through stencils and online courses. Building resilience after great loss with Linda Goldspink-Lord

After years as a CEO in the not-for-profit sector, Linda Goldspink-Lord quit the safety net of her job when her health took a turn for the worse.

In 2012, Linda experienced every parent's worst nightmare when her daughter Molly was killed in a tragic accident on their property in the Illawarra.

Having also recently lost her mother, and suffered major health problems of her own, Linda had to find a way out of the darkness, back to the light.

Claire Morgan from Rupanyup LivingMother of three, farmer and business woman Claire Morgan is making her mark on Rupanyup. She’s giving people more reasons to visit the country town located on the great Silo Art Trail.

In a town with a population of less than 400 people, Claire started the business, 10 years ago now, to give back to the community and create a place where locals could come together.

Rupanyup Living is filled with a beautiful collection of homewares, clothing, accessories and local produce. You can also taste the flavour of Rupanyup thanks to the creation of Claire’s delicious brownies using local chickpea flour.

In this episode, Claire talks about giving back to her community, how she navigated COVID without footsteps through the shop door, connecting with her community through Instagram, collaborating with Robert Gordon Pottery and her big plans for 2022.

Sarah, and her husband Shayne, have nurtured an extensive range of soap and body products that is founded on the philosophy that 'natural is best'.

Sarah shares with us her love of rural communities, the challenges of COVID, how to leverage your market presence, and her plans to work with new ingredients and other brands.

The importance of small care with Brooke McAlary

Brooke McAlary, the internationally best selling author of SLOW, and has released a new booked titled CARE: the radical art of taking time.

The book was created out of necessity during the height of the global pandemic at a time when ‘care’ seemed most important in our lives.

If you look back over the past 18 months, there has been an overwhelming nature of ‘big care’ - the Black Summer bushfires, COVID-19, Black Lives Matter protests, the US election. 2020 has been a time of so many enormous, overwhelming problems facing the world and, as human beings, we have cared about them all.

In 2020, Brooke burnt out. She discovered she cared too much about the ‘big care’. It was also the year she discovered she cared too little about the ‘small care’.

In CARE, Brooke focuses on smaller personal acts of care, ones that can be achieved and are accessible no matter your socio-economic status or social background. And you can’t say you don’t have time as the acts are broken down into: half a minute, half an hour and half a day or more.

It truely is an incredible book.

From her home in the Southern Highlands, Brooke talks to us about her experience of feeling incredible loneliness, post-natal depression, small acts of care and her concept of tilting instead of balancing.

The beauty of business with Botanicals by Luxe

When Bec Connolly became a mum after a difficult fertility journey, she knew she didn’t want to return to full time work.

A qualified skin therapist, Bec set up a therapy room in the home in Geelong in 2015. However it wasn’t long before the self-confessed “skin-nerd” was taking the next step, and formulating products of her own.

It was a long and difficult search to find a small batch manufacturer and Bec was told countless times that she was just a “mum with a hobby”. But she persisted and launched her very own skin care range, Botanicals by Luxe in 2018.

Bec shares with us the why behind her business, the manufacturing process, creating an ‘Instagramable’ brand, engaging influencers and ambassadors, her experience with anxiety and the importance of self care.

Making a statement with Pink Nade

Johanna Clark embodies the ethos of women supporting women. Kindness, inclusion and confidence is at the core of her statement earring business https://www.pinknade.com.au/ (Pink Nade) located in the tiny rural town of Warracknabeal.

Pink Nade is Johanna’s fifth business having started with Joey Jelly Bean, and then a signwriting business, clothing store and the local Australia Post contract with her husband Joel. All of this plus raising five children under the age of 13.

In the past three years, Pink Nade has built a cult following on Instagram with more than 22,000 followers. Johanna has been able to combine her love for design, pattern and colour to bring out a range of bold statement earrings.

Johanna shares with us her entrepreneurial journey which includes overcoming limiting beliefs, severe burn out and costly wholesale mistakes.

Ten years in business with Incy Interiors

Incy Interiors was founded in 2011 by interiors enthusiast, Kristy Withers. The business was born from a surprisingly difficult search for her son Oscar’s first “big boy bed”.

Kristy left her role with eBay, and using her corporate marketing experience she launched Incy Interiors, debuting a range of retro style iron beds and cots.

The stylish range has since expanded to encompass around 70 products and is available across the globe. In fact, one of her most recent customer’s is queen of tennis, Serena Williams.

But the road to 10 years in business hasn’t been straight forward or smooth sailing. In fact, Kristy almost didn’t make it past the eight year mark.

Kristy shares with us what it took to push through that challenge, the key things that have helped Incy Interiors experience continual growth, the impact of running a global business on her family and health, and some must visit places in Milthorpe and Orange in NSW.

Nerida Hansen on weaving her way to the top

Seeing a gap in the market, Nerida Hansen pitched her idea to support independent artists and designers to a major retailer, but they weren't interested. Believing in herself and her vision, Nerida left her job and started representing independent artists.

She turned her dream into a reality and launched her first collection of digitally printed fabrics in 2017.

Her business - Nerida Hansen Fabrics - is now a growing independent fabric business in Geelong supporting textile designers, illustrators and artists from all over the world.

Nerida has built her team, established an e-commerce store providing wholesale and retail, opened a bricks and mortar store in Torquay and recently launched a second business called Future Folk Designs.

2020 has been bitter sweet for Nerida. When the global pandemic first hit, Nerida recalls "crying for 30 days straight" not knowing what the future held. She stood down her staff and virtually shut down everything. Then, it turned around overnight.

There was such an increase in sales, Nerida had to move the business into a bigger warehouse and, more importantly, was able to re-employ her team.

Nerida is at the top of her game in the textiles market and is building an empire. She shares with us her start up journey, the importance of questioning growth, how and when to hire, dealing with trolls, how to successfully pitch your design, future plans and so much more business advice.

Building a community through print with Kimberley Furness

While starting a print magazine might seem like too daunting of a quest to attempt, Kimberley launched OAK Magazine in just six weeks, and now three years later represents an exciting new chapter for regional media in this country.

Kimberley is passionate about women in business, especially in rural and regional Australia, and she loves hearing and sharing their stories. Her mantra of connection, collaboration and community is testament to this.

As a mother of four, life is busy but Kimberley has learnt that making time for her passions means she is a happier person all round. Little did she know this is making her a role model for the next generation who are learning from her actions that women are strong, resilient and creative.

Ashley Morales successful pivot from makeup to pottery

Ashley Morales is best known as a makeup artist having launched her business 10 years ago. She has worked on special events, commercial photoshoots for well known clothing brands and her Instagram photos have been shared all over the world by international brands.

Ash’s work came to a grinding halt in March when COVID-19 impacted events and weddings - her main source of income.

With time to spare, Ash decided to nurture her creative side and work with some clay.

From her home studio in Bendigo, Ash slowly began to create a collection of handmade homewares. She eventually created 140 beautiful pieces and built an e-commerce site. With an email campaign and Instagram, her first drop sold out in just 13 hours.

Ash shares with us her transition from makeup artist to potter and the mental hurdles she has had to overcome in the process. She also talks about her Instagram strategy, investing in photography to position her business as a professional, and finding the courage to leave her corporate job of 16 years to step into her two creative businesses full time.

Kate Marshall took seven weeks leave from her job as a kindergarten teacher to homeschool her three children during the first lockdown. What she didn’t expect was to rediscover her love of painting and successfully launch her business From The Paint Shed.

Leading up to this point, Kate was experiencing a stressful time at work; feeling overwhelmed, overworked and undervalued. The short hiatus gave her that much needed time to pause, reflect, and paint.

Kate has since launched a website, grown her social media presence and had her work represented in local homewares stores. She has generated enough interest in her artwork to reduce her days in the classroom to three a week and dedicate two days to her business.

Kate shares with us her business journey, the importance of showing up authentically on social media, the success in sticking to a content plan and setting goals, the positive impact her creative passion is having on herself and her family, and so much more.

Positive affirmations with The Teacher Collection

The role of teaching is demanding. It's relentless. There is a huge number of pressing elements that contribute to a teacher’s mental load every day.

Over the past five years, Lill Daley has experienced first hand the mental load of being a school teacher - and decided to do something about it.

Lill created a set of affirmation cards out of a personal need for self kindness and positivity, especially during those challenging teaching moments.

It wasn’t long before her colleagues were asking for their own set. And so began her side business, The Teacher Collection.

The Teacher Collection is a set of affirmation cards, featuring positive and uplifting statements, made by a teacher for teachers.

Being from a family of dairy farmers, Lill has seen first hand the positive impact local support can have on a small business. So it’s no surprise that her positive affirmation cards are 100% designed, printed and assembled in Central Victoria.

More recently, Lill has gifted 30 Teacher Support Kits filled with over $800 worth of Australian made items to teachers doing it tough in rural and remote Australia.

For as long as she can remember, Michelle Cail has always had a camera in hand.

Michelle’s business Gingerhouse Photography, was born at a time when her life was becoming more and more enriched with moments and milestones that needed to be captured.

When Michelle finally followed her passion and stepped into her business full time not everything went to plan. Bookings slowed and doubt crept in. But Michelle found a way to stay motivated through creativity and built an engaged audience which subsequently led to new bookings.

Her business has now expanded from newborns and weddings to include to business and personal branding and a variety of workshops.

Michelle has also played a pivotal role in the success of OAK Magazine, having shot four front covers and numerous feature stories and advertorials.

Being an entrepreneur in the country with Pip from JUMBLED

Pip Brett is a die hard colour lover, a self confessed failed minimalist and has one motto - ‘more is more and less is a bore’.

Pip launched her first business at 21 in a very small store in her home town of Orange in central west NSW.

When a shopfront became available for lease right next door to Pip's boutique clothing store Iglou, it was more than a sign. Without a clue of what she would stock, Pip signed the lease and https://www.jumbledonline.com/ (JUMBLED) began.

JUMBLED is now an award winning homewares store filled with inspiration, colour and Australian design.

Iglou and JUMBLED - along with a coffee shop - are now all together in one building called ‘The Sonic’, an 1864 old Masonic Hall that Pip and her husband Nick Luelf renovated in just eight weeks.

Earlier this year, Pip hosted The Huddle, a women in business event which saw 450 women converge on Orange for a weekend of inspiration.

From hairdresser to 9 News camera operator

Meet Carrington Lyons, the first female Camera Operator on the 9 News Central Victoria team. The most remarkable part, she’s only 22.

Carrington has always had a passion for photography and filmmaking but year 12 at St Brigid's College Horsham didn’t pan out the way she anticipated. Her short film for Tropfest wasn’t shortlisted and she didn’t get her first round university offer. So Carrington chose to defer her place at Deakin University and take up a hairdressing apprentice.

Six months in, Carrington knew hairdressing wasn’t where her heart lay. With the support of her boss and family, she moved to Bendigo.

It was a last minute shift change at a restaurant in Bendigo, that Carrington met tv journalist Sarah Lawrence who extended an invitation for Carrington to visit the 9 News Central Victoria studio. Carrington got her foot in the door and now... her days revolve around churning out high-quality, local news interviews, stories and packages.

Carrington shares with us her story of persistence and hard work, and why she believes everything happen for a reason.

The impact of COVID on the fitness industry with D-Club247 Fitness

When Brikitta Kool-Daniels set off on a three week family trip to the United States, she never envisaged that her fitness business of 20 years would close on her return.

A few days into their trip, COVID shut down businesses and changed the way of life in the US with Australia following soon after.

Cutting their trip short, Brikitta, her husband Ricky and their three boys returned home to Bendigo only to spend the next 14 days in self isolation.

And so, in 2016, Alf The Label was born.

What started out as a hobby with an initial run of 50 bags has quickly scaled into a million dollar business with a customer base that stretches across the globe.
