On this edition of All Revved Up with Todd Bianco: Big auto companies are making big deals for battery factories to electrify their fleets. Todd ranted about the fact that “MIC” Made-In-China cars are coming to the U.S. The Chinese invasion will be with electric vehicles, completely skipping internal combustion vehicles. Like the Japanese and Koreans before them, they have been learning quickly and now can manufacture desirable products at very competitive prices. We already buy Chinese-built cars in the U.S. without even knowing. The market will look very different by 2030. The Ford Maverick is back as an entry level pickup truck with an eye-popping EPA rating of 42 mpg city for the base hybrid. Tesla is accelerating it dominance in both EVs and Supercharging. Bring-a-Trailer has some fantastic picks this week, including a 1970 Fiat Dino Spyder, a 1971 DeTomaso Pantera and a 1971 Firebird Trans Am.

The 2022 Ford Maverick – all the info Ford gave us. Tesla removes radar from its 3/Y vehicles as well as disabling certain safety features leading to a downgrade from consumer rating websites. Tesla also cancelled the 2022 Model S Plaid+ - According to Elon, the Model S Plaid (which will start deliveries this week) is almost as good in every measure and rarely does anyone driver more than 400 miles without stopping. The Plaid+ was said to have a range of 520 miles, while the Long Range Model S has a range of 412 miles. The Nissan Ariya will be delayed to the US market until Q1 2022, more semiconductor factory shutdowns, does the Porsche have an electrical problem with the Taycan? Ford is going to make an electric Explorer and Aviator and maybe an electric Maverick. In Europe, Ford will build its version of the VW ID.4 on VW’s MEB electric car platform. Ford is building a joint venture battery factory with SK Innovations called BlueOvalSK. You still can’t buy a Tesla directly in Texas. Stellantis is recalling 450,000 heavy duty trucks for a mistake in its owner’s manual that cites the incorrect lug nut torque instructions. The CARB is considering a new rule to objectively measure the degradation of EV batteries, limiting them to 80% over 15 years or 150,000 miles.

Todd chose: 2006 Spyker C8 Spyder, a 1986 Toyota Cressida, a 1989 Renault Alpine GTA, and an exceedingly-rare 1967 Ford Country Squire wagon with a special-order 428 cubic inch V8 and a console mounted 4-speed manual transmission. Ford made only 1 ever. We also talked about the upcoming 2021 Ram Rebel TRX – the company’s answer to the Ford F-150 Raptor. Hyundai has a new Sonata Hybrid with excellent fuel economy and Kia is renaming the Optima the K5.

Toyota introduced a new 2021 Sienna minivan and an all-new 2021 Venza SUV – both hybrid only, no gasoline-only powertrains. GM’s working on an Ultra Cruise autonomous driving system for city streets to supplement its highway Super Cruise. Porsche revealed the 2021 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S – still the best-looking 911 and still highly desirable. Cars to buy today that will be future classics. California looking at regulations to push Uber and Lyft to have more electric cars on the road.

John McMullen picks: 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am owned by Burt Reynolds and 1964 Mercury Comet Caliente Convertible. Todd Bianco picked 3 cars: 1986 Volvo 240DL with 59k miles which sold for $9,100; a no reserve 1981 Dodge Aries K sedan with 58k original miles – seats 6!; a 1,600 mile 1969 Citroen DS21 Pallas – it’s as close to new as you’ll see. We also looked at option prices from old car stickers. Toyota has a new 2021 Supra with a 2.0L turbo-four engine for the first time. Lordstown motors talks in-hub motors. Smart is making a strong comeback according to Daimler. Look for new electric Smarts in 2021. Dividends suspended at VW and BMW. Nissan is killing the Datsun sub brand.

The full-size trucks accounted for 40% of all sales of Ford, GM and FCA combined. Higher pickup prices also helped push up the average transaction price to $35,700. Tesla received a formal pitch from Wichita, Kansas for its Cybertruck factory. VW is afraid of Tesla’s lead in autonomy, including a discussion of neural networks and machine learning versus LiDAR. The Mustang Mach-E will be slightly delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Quibi is an app with short-format programs. One of them is Elba v. Block, where Edris Elba, the British actor, against Ken Block, the American extreme rally driver. I though it was a fun series that you can watch for free during a trial period. GM’s future plans for the Corvette, including a 1000 hp hypercar named the Zora. Safest pickup truck for 2020.

Todd’s Bring-a-Trailer pick was a one-family-owned 1979 BMW 320i with only 14k miles. John picked a 1968 Mazda Cosmo Series 1, a JDM model with right-hand drive.

On this show we discussed the 1955 Dodge La Femme and how it was a dismal failure of an attempt to market a car to women. We looked at the 20 top-selling compact luxury cars in 2019 and how they were ranked by the editors of Autoweek.com. We discussed the panic in at VW HQ as the on-sale date approaches for the critical ID3 electric car touted as a rival to the Tesla Model 3. Unfortunately, the software flaws keep piling up and it was reported that there was a military-level effort applied to fixing the bugs. For our Bring a Trailer picks, Todd liked a 1994 Lexus LS400 with only 5,400 and John M. was thrilled with a 1970 Mercury Marauder X-100 Coupe originally sold new to the Fresno Catholic Diocese. In the news, we talked about the upper laser blade lights in the Tesla Cybertruck, the fact that the 2020 C8 Corvette is a huge hit for GM, Toyota’s highlander XLE Hybrid is the most fuel-efficient 3-row SUV on the market and the fact that Toyota makes the most reliable hybrids. Model Y deliveries are starting in March. And the Chevy Impala was put out of its misery permanently. We also talked about the cancellation of the 90^th Geneva International Motor Show due to fears of the Covid-9 virus and the effect the virus is having on the entire automobile industry.
