Driving for Better Business

This week we shine the spotlight on the 'Driving for Better Business' podcast as we take a look at fatigue in driving. Host Simon Turner talks with Dr Paul Jackson, a Chartered Psychologist specialising in human performance who has assisted safety-critical organisations to implement fatigue risk management systems for more than 20 years.

In particular they look at a landmark legal case in which the Office of Rail and Road successfully prosecuted an employer for health and safety breaches, as a result of two of its employees being killed in a road traffic collision where driver fatigue was identified as the primary cause.

30 years of pushing for more driver education

Here come the seatbelt sheriffs!

The Project EDWARD podcast returns with a new name, but the same target of Every Day Without A Road Death. In this first episode of season two we take a look a two stories:

Firstly, we meet a lady from Ireland who next week marks the 10th anniversary of the day her life changed for ever. Her name is Elber Twomey, and in July 2012 she was on holiday in the south-west of England with her husband Con and little son Oisin. She was also expecting a baby daughter On the 6th of July, at 2:47PM, the family were involved in a horrific crash with a suicidal taxi driver who was being pursued by the police.

Oisín died, and Elber lost her unborn daughter. Con was critically injured and died the following May.

Elber has campaigned since then for better training in suicide awareness for police officers and also on how to apprehend suicidal drivers. She keeps the memory of her lost family members alive with an annual Twomey family memorial – and I caught up with her a few days ago just as this year’s very special event had concluded.

We also catch up with two Project EDWARD supporters – Chris Spinks of Westcotec and Geoff Collins of Jenoptik – who share their own thoughts on this year’s theme: Changing Minds, Changing Behaviour.

We take close look back at one of the very earliest social media behaviour change campaigns that genuinely went viral – it followed the death of motorcyclist David Holmes on a road in Norfolk in 2013. We’ve reunited David’s mother Brenda with the police officers involved in the aftermath of David’s crash – and we find out why they decided to publish footage from the camera attached to David’s helmet – that recorded the last few seconds of his life – and the last word he spoke.

Meet the new Chief

In this latest episode, James Luckhurst is joined by Jo Shiner, Chief Constable of Sussex and the recently-appointed roads policing lead for the National Police Chiefs’ Council, as well as by Ruth Purdie OBE – chief executive of UKROEd, the organisation responsible for the management of the National Driver Offender Retraining Scheme.

We’ll be considering opportunities to kick start the sort of reductions in road death and serious injury that have been missing – not just in this country but across most of Europe – for more than a decade now. Where do these opportunities lie? Also, what’s being done

to make roads policing more visible – and to remind drivers that compliance with the law is not optional.

We also meet Chris Spinks from Westcotec and Geoff Collins from Jenoptik. Both are supporters of Project EDWARD and both work in the business of keeping people safe on the roads. We’ll be looking to dispel a few myths about speeding and asking both to identify effective measures for ensuring that drivers use speeds that are both legal and safe.

Welcome to Episode 4 of the Project EDWARD podcast.

For this episode we’re pleased to be taking an in-depth look at the MORSE safer roads initiative that’s funded by the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion. MORSE aims to reduce the number of road traffic offences being committed on the roads throughout West Mercia (a large area consisting of Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Telford) – and to make those roads and communities safer for everyone.

We hear from John Campion, as well as from Keith Chance, Deputy Chief Officer for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, who nare a key partner in the delivery of MORSE.

Another partner is the charity YSS, whose operations manager Dave Andrewartha explains the methods used to bring about changes in the driving behaviour of MORSE service users – two of whom give us the benefit of their experiences going through the scheme.

Automated vehicles: innovations and implications

For this third episode, Neil Barrett welcomes Neil Worth, Chief Executive of GEM Motoring Assist and Colin Paterson, Head of Marketing for DriveTech. With many parts of the Automated and Electric Vehicles Act 2018 being activated in 2021, the Automated Lane Keeping System could be on our roads very soon. In the UK, this will mark the start of a rollout of features which won’t usually require the driver’s attention on the road when they’re being used. This milestone on the long journey to so-called Level 5 full autonomy is significant, with many implications for insurance, driver education, public awareness and policing. The panel discuss all this and more, including some possible next steps.

Breath tests and drug driving

For this second episode, James Luckhurst is joined by David Davies of the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety (PACTS), Ean Lewin of D.Tec International – manufacturers of the widely-used Drugwipe detection system – and by Max Fogdell, Head of the Driving Licences and Examinations Unit at Finland’s Transport and Communications Agency Traficom. They consider the road safety implications of a significant fall in the number of breath tests conducted by police officers, as well as the disturbing fact that some police forces – with better procedures, contracts and training – are convicting ten times more drug drivers than others. There’s also a chance to find out how alcohol interlocks work for repeat drink drive offenders in Finland, where they have been part of the system for more than 15 years.
