Born in Hong Kong and raised in Sydney, Rainbow's artistic journey is deeply rooted in her family's heritage and her experiences as a member of the Asian diaspora. Rainbow's creative process is a fascinating blend of traditional and contemporary elements. Her songwriting often explores themes of loss and healing, focusing on the complexities of diasporic experiences.

One of Rainbow's most intriguing projects revolves around her Weitou ancestry, the first settlers of Hong Kong. She has been working on reimagining the Weitou bridal lament, a ritual where brides-to-be would express their grievances through song before marriage. This project not only showcases Rainbow's musical talents but also highlights her commitment to preserving and sharing her cultural heritage through performance art.

Through her art, Rainbow amplifies the experiences of the diaspora, exploring themes of cultural representation, identity, and the interplay between tradition and modernity. Her work serves as a bridge between generations, bringing lesser-known aspects of Hong Kong culture to the forefront and engaging in a dialogue about the complexities of diasporic life.

Nithya Nagarajan is a contemporary performance maker and curator who works across Australia and the Asia pacific. And she holds a PhD in performance studies. With 12 years of experience in programming, creative producing, international engagement, and transformative justice in the arts industry. Her artistic practice adopts movement as a system of inquiry into the sacred, the sensual and the decolonial. Nithya currently serves as a co-artistic director at Melbourne’s Art House, and a board member at Theatre Network Australia. Nithya is the assistant director for the upcoming production “The Jungle and the Sea” which opens on the 12th of November at Belvoir St Theatre, Surry Hill Sydney.

Anticipating Father’s Day this upcoming Sunday, we sat down to chat about the ways gender constructions are amplified during these ‘festive’ commercial events. Ever notice the colour pink and red all over the shops around May? Well, for September, we’re lead to believe that all fathers (therefore, men) only like dark colours; blue, black or grey.

Hm, interesting. And what about indications of what a father (and therefore, a man) is interested in reading? Helen looked at the top 24 book recommendations for dads advertised by bookstores and found that only three books were written by women. What? Men don’t read female authors? NO! Can that be?

And why were all the books on the ‘Dad’s wish list’ books about male sportsmen, entertainers, politicians, wine, science, technology? And why were all the novel recommendations spy, crime, thriller, forensic, military?

Fathers (and therefore, men) don’t like flowers? Who says?

Finally, Helen noticed the bias schools have committed by having Mother’s Day Morning Teas (held at 11am) and Father’s Day Breakfast (held at 8am) because what, only fathers (and therefore, men) have to race to work?

Hm. Very bias forms of discrimination, don’t you think?

Dyson Heydon has spent more than half his life with the banner of “brilliant legal mind.” What are the perks of being labeled a “brilliant legal mind”? In Australia, it apparently means you can harass and violate young women without any accountability.

This week, we chat about male judges like Heydon and Brett Kavanaugh and Alex
Kozinski, and their criminal behaviour.

In this country’s most powerful legal institutions, the perpetual unmitigated acclaim that powerful men give each other ensures the systemic harassment and assault of the industry’s most vulnerable members – young women – continues. It effectively ensures women are kept out.

Powerful men target a woman’s most vulnerable (and, according to society, her most valuable) asset: her sexuality. They know by doing this, women are reduced to pieces of meat. It’s a strategy – to exert power, keep us out, to destroy every other part of us. And, often, they succeed.
