We got in contact with Isaac via the Athletics & Activities Director of the Western Academy of Beijing Martin Halpin. Isaac is a Design teacher and Soccer coach for the Western Academy of Beijing. He introduced eSports (electronic sports) within WAB extracurricular program.
The pandemic gave us the opportunity to host our first eSports Fifa Soccer tournament and eSports gives us the opportunity to learn valuable life skills through sports in an online setting.

Combining video games and school used to be a recipe for trouble.
But with new technologies emerge, and schools re-evaluate how to impact student learning, there is research to suggest that gaming and e-sports may have a place alongside academics.

Isaac Peña has been coaching soccer at WAB for several years. He has seen the types of off-field benefits that athletic training and competition can have on students: academic improvements, increased self-confidence, team building, problem-solving, communication, and so many more. This year, as WAB planned programs to get students active while fighting the pandemic, Isaac sparked a conversation with the WABX Activities Department about how e-sports and how they can benefit students in many of the same ways as athletics.

Isaac’s new e-sports club in the Middle School was created out of an effort to engage students in school and help them connect over something they love. The popularity of the club is already apparent, and Isaac has a lot to look forward to as the group develops, including the FUSE Cup.

Today we are going to learn from Isaac how to start with eSports, what the benefits are and what it can add to your Athletics & Activities program.

Thank you Isaac for your willingness to share your enthusiasm for eSports.

Both Kayla and Darian are ISU Alumni who played multiple sports. Kayla graduated in 2019 and Darian in 2020 and they are currently working and studying in Denver, Colorado. Both Kayla and Darian embodied the educational-based athletics philosophy and showed what it means to be a student-athlete. Not only were they great team players, but they also were supportive of others, kind and respectful to their coaches and they showed great sportsmanship on- and off the court. We wanted to talk with Brendan as he organized a very successful virtual cross-country event. Many international schools from all over the globe participated in the Tashkent Virtual XC. Brendan explained his rationale for hosting this event, what went well and what would he have done differently. This interview will definitely help Athletic Directors that are interested to host a virtual event but might be hesitative to actually go for it. We want to thank Brendan for sharing his experiences with us and his support of the educational-based athletics philosophy.

We teach and coach in Ulaanbaatar Mongolia, running our athletics programs. In this episode, we chat with Douglass Kilgore, the Bowtie AD to discuss education based athletics and explore the philosophy associated.
Our goal is to connect Athletes, Parents, Coaches, Athletic Directors and anybody with a passion for sports. Our mission is to educate and promote the Education-Based Athletics philosophy. Sports is more than the result on the scoreboard. It is a metaphor for life and the skills learned through sports directly transfer to anything we do down the road. More important than creating better athletes is to create better people. With our podcast, we interview interesting people in the world of sports and ask them about their experiences and to get their unique perspective on the lessons they learned through sports.
