In the early 1800s, life was very hard for poor people living in England, and that s just when Charles Dickens was born. Although his father worked hard, he still couldn't feed his family and pay all of his bills, so he was arrested and sent to prison. Charles was only a young boy when that happened, and he had to go to work in a shoe polish factory to HELP earn money for his mother and his six brothers and sisters. Later, his family inherited some money, so his father w as finally able to pay all of the bills and get out of prison. And Charles was able to go to a good school and get a good education. He knew that education was very important for anyone who did not want to live in poverty.

Charles later became a reporter for several newspapers. He cared a great deal about what happened to people, and he went to work with his writing to HELP make England a better place for children and adults to live. When he was only 21 years old, his very first story was published. Soon, he became the famous author of several books like Oliver Twist and A Christmas Carol.

Even though Charles Dickens became successful and wealthy, he never quit caring about people who were treated unfairly because they were poor or because they had a different color of skin. Charles Dickens wrote and spoke out about the rights of everyone to have an education, safe places to work, opportunity to go to the doctor, and better childhoods. Charles Dickens cared, and because of that, he became a HERO.

Once there was a man who had a dream of a world where every person lived in peace, where everyone was treated fairly and with respect. He helped many people learn about peace and about brotherhood. That man was a real HERO! That man was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.!

When Martin was a young boy, he saw that some people were mean to other people just because their skin was a different color. Some people were not allowed to go to certain places or sit in certain seats. Some children were not allowed to play with others all because they were a different color. Martin could not understand any of this. He didn’t understand why kids couldn’t just be friends.

One day, young Martin went shopping for some new shoes with his father. When they found the pair he liked, Martin and his father sat down in the first empty seats they saw. Of course, he couldn’t wait to try on those brand new shoes when suddenly he heard a very unfriendly voice.

“You and your boy move the seats in the back of the store then I will help you with those shoes!”

Well, just then, Martin’s father took his son’s hand, and they walked right out of the store. Why had that man been so angry with them? What had they done wrong? Martin never forgot what happened in the store that day, and he promised himself and his dad that he would work hard to someday help change the laws, customs, and attitudes that caused some people to treat each other so badly. Over the years, Martin Luther King, Jr. did work hard, and laws, customs, and attitudes that kept people apart did change! But with Martin, it all started when he was just a young boy who made a promise that he always remembered. He worked hard from that point on to help fix something he knew was wrong.

Sometimes it seems that boys are always hungry, and young Freddy Douglass was hungry but not for food. He was hungry to learn! More than anything, he wanted to learn to read! But, Freddy was a slave, and as a slave it was against the law for him to go to school. He didn’t think that was very fair, but he was a young boy and certainly could not change the law. Still he was determined to find a way to learn. And that’s exactly what he did. You see, Freddy knew that some of the boys who were able to go to school would rather eat than read so he thought of a pretty smart plan. He decided that he would feed their stomachs if they would feed his brain! Everyday he began taking them bread and cookies, and they would teach him what they had learned at school that day.

Soon he became an excellent reader, and he worked hard at learning all that he could. He also learned to write and speak well. As a grown man, Frederick Douglass found a way to become a free man, and he wanted more than anything to see fairness for all people. He also wanted to see that all children would have the opportunity to learn and be well educated. Many people began listening to him as he talked about and wrote about fairness. He spent many hours talking with Abraham Lincoln, and actually helped President Lincoln decide to free all of the slaves. And because of that, he became a very important man. Yes, Freddy Douglass, the young boy who grew up as a slave knew all about fairness. He grew up to be Frederick Douglass the HERO.

Richard was only eleven years old when he, at last, convinced his mother to let him travel by himself

to the Philippine Islands. He didn t whine or beg his mother; instead he gave good reasons why she should let him go, and he was determined.

So with suitcase packed, he left his home in Virginia and headed west by train to California. There he boarded a ship and sailed all the way to the Philippines. After his visit there, he didn t go back he went forward all the way back home to Virginia. Richard was not even thirteen years old, and he had already traveled all the way around the world by himself!

Richard Byrd was a determined accomplisher! He joined the United States Naval Academy when he was twenty years old, and his determination paid off again when he convinced the Navy to let him become a pilot. He had a goal of being the first person to fly to the North Pole, and even though there were many problems to prevent him from doing that, he continued in his determination, and finally flew over the North Pole and into the history books on May 9th, 1926.

While he had many accomplishments in his lifetime, Richard Byrd is best known for his exploration, not of the North Pole, but of the South Pole and the continent of Antarctica. Through many trips there, and even living there for a long time, he gave the world much information about that frozen continent. Yes, that determined eleven year old, Richard Byrd who traveled around the world by himself, grew up to become Admiral Richard Byrd the HERO.

Growing up in Arizona in the early 1930s was difficult for Cesar Chavez and his parents. Because of the Great Depression, his father lost the family business and soon had no work or money. In 1937, his family had to move to California to find work.

During those young years, he began to see how unfair people could be to each other, but he also learned many things from his mother. She believed that violence and selfishness were wrong, and she taught these lessons to all of her children.

As Cesar grew older, he went to work picking grapes in vineyards, along with many, many others. He began to see how unfairly the workers were treated, and how they weren t paid enough for their work. The owners of the companies were taking great advantage of the workers. So in addition to working hard everyday, Cesar started organizing workers to demand pay raises and better working conditions. They did not want to get something for nothing, they just wanted to be paid fairly for their work, and treated with the respect they and their families deserved. Later, he began to HELP others all over the country. He formed an organization called the National Farm Workers Association, which today is called United Farm Workers. But he went further, much further. Cesar also began to work hard to change laws about what chemicals could be used on crops and which ones could not, because some were just too dangerous. In 1994, after Cesar Chavez had died, the President of the United States presented the Medal of Freedom, to his wife, Helen. Yes, that little boy named Cesar, who saw how unfairly workers in the fields were treated, grew up to HELP millions of people, and for that, he became a very great HERO.

It was four o’clock in the morning, and Amos Jacobs was fast asleep. Suddenly, there came a scream from the front room where Amos’ baby brother had just been bitten by a sewer rat. In those days, a rat bite almost certainly meant death. That’s when Mrs. Jacobs promised in her heart that if her baby would just live, she would spend a whole year begging for pennies to give to poor people. Well, the baby did recover, and Mrs. Jacobs, who was very poor herself did raise money for other people who desperately needed it. She always followed through on what she promised.

When Amos grew up, he wanted to make a career in show business because he could be a very funny man. But times were very hard for him in the beginning. It looked like he might not make it, and he didn’t have any money. Then, remembering his mother’s example, he decided to make a promise, too. He promised that if he became a successful entertainer, he would use his money and his influence to build a place where sick children could get better.

Well, as actors often do, Amos Jacobs changed his name. He became Danny Thomas, and eventually, he became a huge success. Soon, Danny Thomas knew it was time to make good on his promise, and in 1962, he created St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a place where now thousands and thousands of children have gone to get the best medical care around. And it was first made possible by one man who learned about keeping promises when he was just a child. That man was Danny Thomas, a very special HERO.

Louis Pasteur is a name that everybody learns about in school because he was a man who did a lot of great things to HELP people. He was a real HERO. He was the man who discovered the way to keep milk and a lot of other foods from spoiling quickly by using heat to kill tiny germs called bacteria. He also invented something called vaccinations to HELP keep bacteria from making people sick. But Louis Pasteur was sixty years old when he finally discovered what he had been looking for since he w as a little boy.

You see, Louis grew up in a small town in France, and one day his father told him to come straight home from school and not to go into the hills to play like he usually did. Okay, Father, he said, you can trust me. Indeed, M r. Pasteur knew he could trust his son because Louis had always been obedient to his parents. It was a good thing, too, because Louis s father knew there were some wolves in the hills that had a disease called rabies.

Over the next few days, eighteen people were bitten by those wolves, and seventeen of those people died from the disease. Some of them were Louis s friends, and that made him so sad that when he grew up, he worked for most of his life to find a cure for rabies. And yes, when he was sixty years old, he finally did. You know, if Louis had not obeyed his father, he might have been bitten, too. And then, he might not have grown up to discover the many wonderful things that he did. But Louis Pasteur honored his father s wishes, and he did become a HERO.

It was 1882, and Helen was not even two years old when she became very, very sick. Her illness left her both deaf and blind. Helen became a little girl who lived in a very dark, very lonely world. Of course, her family loved her and took good care of her, but they needed a great deal of help with their baby girl.

Helen was seven years old when someone very special came into her life—a teacher named Anne Sullivan. It wasn’t long until she would become Helen’s very best friend. Miss Sullivan knew a special way to teach words by spelling them out on Helen’s hand. For example, the first word Helen understood was W-A-T-E-R. The teacher would put one of Helen’s hands in water, then quickly made the letters in Helen’s other hand. Right after learning the word “water,” Helen found all sorts of things to learn. In fact, in one day, she learned 30 words. Soon, she began feeling of Miss Sullivan’s mouth when she talked trying to understand how the teacher formed words. And then Helen learned how to speak.

Helen Keller never stopped learning. She learned how to read and write in braille. In fact, she learned several different languages. And then, she went to college and even wrote a book about the story of her life. She continued to write books and articles, and she made many speeches helping to raise money for blind people around the world. Even though she was not able to see or hear, Helen Keller was a true HERO who never gave up on learning for herself or for others.

“On my honor, I will try to do my duty to God and my country, to help other people at all times, and to obey the Girl Scout laws.” Did you ever say the words of that promise or know someone who did? If so, then you or a friend of yours must be a Girl Scout.

But did you ever wonder about the very first Girl Scout? Well, her name was Juliette Gordon, but everyone called her Daisy. As Daisy grew older, she began noticing children nearby in ragged clothing, and she told her friends about them. “Let’s start a sewing club and make them some clothes,” Daisy suggested.

Her friends thought that was a great idea, and they decided to call their club The Helpful Hands. When Daisy Gordon got married, her name changed to Daisy Low, and she had many opportunities to travel throughout the world. She could never see a human being or an animal in need without trying to help.

Then one day, Daisy met the man who started the Boy Scouts. She became very excited and wanted to help start a group of girls who could also do Scout work. At first, Daisy’s girls were called Girl Guides. Because of Daisy Low’s hard work and great example, many girls today continue to learn how to make the world a better place through scouting. And even though she lived over 100 years ago, Girl Scouts around the world know that little Daisy from Savannah, Georgia truly became a HERO.

Robert Hugman was a very young boy in the very early 1900s, and he loved fishing on the river near his home in San Antonio, Texas. In fact, Robert s special river was called River San Antonio. Not only was it a great place to go fishing, but Robert had heard the stories about how Spanish explorers first discovered the beautiful river in 1691. He could have told you how those Spanish explorers had used the river San Antonio to supply water to the missions they built nearby. The very first one of those missions to get water from Roberts river was the Alamo!

Throughout the years, there had been problems with flooding when the river overflowed its banks. Robert w as only 19 years old in the year 1921, when there was such a terrible flood that 50 people were killed in downtown San Antonio, and a lot of property was destroyed. The city officials were trying to find the best way to solve the problems of flooding. Soon afterward, Robert had gone to college to become an architect. That s when he created a wonderful plan for making the San Antonio River safe and beautiful.

Today, millions of people from around the world visit the San Antonio Riverwalk designed by young Robert. Although it took a lot of people to carry out Robert s plans he is known as the Father of the San Antonio Riverwalk.

Yes, because he cared about something that was very special to him, and because he studied hard to learn how to design something so great that little Robert Hugman grew up to become a HERO

Once there was a little boy named Sylvester McCauley who was picked on a lot just because his skin was a different color from the bullies who picked on him. Those bullies didn’t stand a chance against his big sister, though, and she often came to his rescue. Her name was Rosa. Rosa was born in 1913, and she, along with her brother and their parents lived in Alabama.

When she was nineteen years old, Rosa got married to a man named Raymond Parks, and she became Rosa Parks.

Through the years, she saw a lot of terrible things that people did to each other just because of the color of their skin. There was even a law that on buses, white people had to sit in the front, and black people had to sit in the back. Then if the bus was full, and some more white people got on, some black people had to stand up and give up their seats. Well, one day in 1955, that very thing happened once again while Rosa was riding the bus. She thought that was just simply wrong. So she decided right then and there to do her part in doing something about it. This time she did not stand up! She just sat there until she was arrested and taken to jail.

Finally some attention was given to the very unfair laws that encouraged people to treat one another so badly based on the color of their skin. A lot of other laws were also changed. Even the way people thought of each other began to change. And it all started with one person, a little girl named Rosa who grew up to be Rosa Parks the HERO.

It was on January 25, 1783 that Robert and Mary Colgate had a son. They named him William. When William was 15 years old, his family moved from their home in England and settled in Hartford County, Maryland. Then, only about a year later, young William left home because his father was too poor to continue supporting him. He took all his possessions with him in a bundle and headed for New York.

Along his journey, he remembered the encouraging words of his mother and also the words of a boat captain he had met. They both told him to earn his way by working hard and by being honest in his business dealings. He lived by those words and made certain to always pay what he owed. He soon set up a business making soap and candles. Although it took him about five years to get a really good business going, Colgate & Company became the first great soap-making company in the United States. The business began growing almost faster than he could keep up with it. He started making a lot of money, and he gave a lot of the money he made to churches and to other organizations that HELPED people. He w as a very generous and a very thankful man whose example we could all follow.

Today, more than 200 years after its beginning, his company is called Colgate-Palmolive. So, the next time you go to the store with your parents, look for that name or just the name Colgate on a lot of different products. When you do, remember the young man and his honesty, his generosity, and his thankfulness. Remember all the things that made William Colgate a HERO.

Beatrix was a lonely little girl born in London, England in 1866. Her parents were very busy and hardly had time for a baby, so she was mostly cared for by her nanny, Miss McKenzie whom she loved dearly.

As a very young girl, Beatrix began to draw wonderful pictures of small animals and flowers from the countryside. By the time Beatrix was eight, her parents began to realize that she had an unusual ability for art and began to hire different instructors for her. Some of her drawings are from when she was only nine-years-old. They have been saved through all of these years because Beatrix, whose full name was Beatrix Potter, became the very famous author of books you know such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit. She also created Benjamin Bunny, Jeremy Frog, and Miss Jemima Puddleduck, along with so many others loved by children all over the world.

Actually, when Miss Potter first wrote her stories with their wonderful drawings, they were in the form of letters to a boy who had been sick. When his family read her letters and enjoyed them so much, she decided to turn the story of Peter Rabbit into a book. Eight thousand copies of the book were sold before it was even printed. Yes, with the work she started even as a child, Beatrix Potter has brought great joy to millions of people throughout several generations. And for that, she became a HERO.

Young Samuel Houston was born in the state of Virginia in the year 1793. It had been his father s dream to move the family to Tennessee, but while Sam was still a boy, his father died. Just before he died, he told his wife to take their nine children and go W est. Samuel, along with the rest of his family, remembered his father s dream and worked hard to clear their new wilderness land, build a house and barn, and plant crops. In the winter, when there wasn t quite as much work to do, Samuel loved reading. He also became friends with the Cherokee Indians who lived across the river from his home. When he was fifteen years old, he actually went to live with his Indian friends.

Sam was only 19 years old when he joined the army of General Andrew Jackson and became a good soldier w ho HE LPED make peace between the Indians and the U nited States government. Later, he studied to become a law yer and even became the governor of Tennessee. Finally, his adventures took him all the way to Texas where the people were struggling to become free from Mexico, and Sam HELP ED the people of T exas to form their own country. He was then elected to be its first president, but he wanted Texas to be a state in the United States of America, which finally happened in 1846. Later, he became the governor of Texas.

Today, we see many things named after this great man, including a city, a university, and many streets and highways. And it was because, even as a child, he worked hard, made good choices, and started seeing himself growing up to be somebody very special! That little Samuel from Virginia grew up to be Sam Houston, the HERO!

When you think about real HEROES, you can’t help thinking about people like Benjamin Franklin who did so many wonderful things to help America. For example, he thought that people should have a place to read books and check out books, so he made the very first public library. He also started the first fire department and he made the first bifocal glasses, helping people with bad vision to see better. He did a lot of other things to help people, too.

But just like with all other great HEROES, it all started when Benjamin Franklin was just a boy. He always looked for ways to make things better, ways to help people. The Franklin family was very poor when Benjamin was young, but that just made him want to work even harder. He knew that if he were ever really able to help other people, he would have to begin by helping his own family. Benjamin was still very young when he helped his father make soap and candles. It was his job to cut the wicks, pouring the wax into molds, and run errands for his father. Later, he helped his big brother in a print shop.

Young Benjamin also worked very hard on his handwriting, and he became an excellent reader because he knew how important that was.

Because Benjamin Franklin worked hard and made good choices, he became very wealthy, so he was then able to help other people even more.

Betsy was born in the first day of the year in 1752. Her home was in the colony of Pennsylvania. You see, Pennsylvania wasn’t a state yet, it was still owned by England. Our country, The United States, didn’t become its own nation until more than twenty years after Betsy was born. Betsy loved being a part of the colonies. Even as a little girl, she loved her home in the colonies.

In school, Betsy and her friends learned about reading, and about writing, and about math. But they also learned about sewing, because everything made out of cloth back then was sewn by hand. Modern machines and factories for sewing had not yet been invented. Betsy and her friends loved learning to sew and she tried to make her sewing better and better because someday when she grew up, sewing might be her job! Well, Betsy did grow up and she was a wonderful seamstress. A lot of people would buy the things she made. One of her customers who bought shirts from her was George Washington, our first president!

It was during this time that the colonies became states in The United States of America, a nation of its own—a new country! And it needed a new and special flag! George Washington and others agreed that Betsy would do the very best job at making a new flag. Today, people remember Betsy, Betsy Ross as the one chosen to make the very first American flag, but it all started because she made the choice when she was just a girl in school to become the very best person she could possibly be!

But Theodore’s funny drawings and silly stories he wrote to go along with them have helped many boys and girls learn to read! You know him as Dr.(To make his parents happy!) and Seuss (his middle name). We all love to laugh at his Zizzer-Zazzer-Zuz, and feel sad when the Lorax lifts himself because no one will listen, and get mad at the Grinch who would dare to steal Christmas!

Can you believe there was a time when he first wrote a story and no book company wanted to print it?! But he did not give up. We would never have had Yertle the Turtle, or Horton and the Who, or the Parade along Mulberry Street if Dr. Seuss had not been determined to keep trying! He wanted to help children enjoy learning to read and make people of all ages smile. Yes, that little boy named Theodore kept on trying instead of giving up. That little boy truly became a HERO. He became Dr. Seuss!

Through all of her experiences with the farm, the war, the soldiers, being a President s wife, and a President s mother, Abigail wrote hundreds of wonderful letters, because she cared enough to share what she saw, what she heard, and how she felt about all that was going on around her. Today we have important information about those days over 200 years ago that we might not have had otherwise, all thanks to a little girl and then a lady who cared. There were some Cherokee Indian boys and girls who went to school with Will. The very fir st day, he noticed how ragged and torn their clothes were. And at lunch time, he saw they didn t have much food to eat. Filled with compassion, W ill walked over and greeted one of the boys. Would you like to have a sandwich? I ve got more than I can eat! The boy smiled, and accepted the offer. During recess, the boys had a great time racing each other around the school yard. Will was so fast, the other boys called him Rabbit! But he was still worried about their ragged clothes, so he decided to talk to his mother about it. Well, his mother had the idea to buy new cloth, so clothes could be m ade to fit them just right.

After Will Rogers had grown up and become a famous cowboy, movie-star, and writer, our nation went through a terrible time known as the Great Depression. Many people became very poor. He HELPED keep our nation smiling during those unhappy years with the funny things he said and did. Will Rogers often said, I never met a man I didn t like.

Just as he HELPED other children when he was a boy, he encouraged everyone who did have plenty to please share with those who did not. Will Rogers never pretended to be great, but he was certainly a HERO.

She had never seen such tumble-down houses, as she called them, with torn curtains in the windows. Jane whispered to her father, What s the matter here? Why is everything so ugly?

Her kind father explained that these people were very poor and could not afford nice houses and pretty clothes. Jane felt a great deal of compassion for them and told her father that someday when she grew up she was going to build a big fine house near the ugly little houses so the children could come play in her yard, and she would be their friend.

As Jane grew, she always remembered her promise to HELP poor children. After going to college, Jane went to the big city of Chicago and began looking for just the right house. She found an old run-down mansion that had been very beautiful at one time. Jane cleaned and repaired the old house until it was wonderful again! She invited the children to come play, and she invited their moms to come visit her. Jane s big house full of love became very famous! It was called Hull House, named after the family that had first built it long before. Jane Addams showed so much compassion for people that Theodore Roosevelt, the President of the United States, called her America s most useful citizen! Because she cared so much for others, Jane Addams truly became a HERO!

Bobby Keeshan was a very happy child growing up in Forest Hills, New York with his two older brothers and his baby sister. That is until he was 15 years old when his mother died. He loved his mother very much, and for a long time he just didn’t know what to do. Well, he did finally finish high school, and then got a job as a messenger boy at the NBC television studios in New York. It wasn’t a very good job, and he was there only a short time when World War II began. That’s when Bob knew what he must do. He decided to serve his country by signing up in the United States Marine Corps.

After the war was over, though, Bob went back to work for NBC. He had always cared very much about families and about children. Soon, he found himself being a helper on a children’s television show called Howdy Doody. He was Clarabelle the Clown. Later, he starred in his own television show. That’s when Bob Keeshan became very famous as millions of children in the 1950s began to know him as Captain Kangaroo. Then, as those children were growing up, other children in the 1960s watched him. After that, children in the 1970s and children in the 1980s still watched and loved Captain Kangaroo. As he got older, he began working with congressmen and senators to help make laws that would protect children and help children become better educated. For more than 50 years, Bob Keeshan did his best to help children all over America and in other countries, too. Yes, that little Bobby from Forest Hills, New York grew up to be Bob Keeshan, the HERO.

In the 1820s and 30s, there lived a little girl named Clara Barton. Clara was the youngest one in her family and she was a tiny girl who loved riding horses. Clara had an older brother named David, and she loved him very much, too! One day, a really sad thing happened. You see, her brother was working to repair the roof of their barn when he accidentally slipped and fell off. He was so badly hurt, the doctor said David would probably die. Clara, who was only 11-years-old at the time, spoke up and said she would take care of David, and that she would help him get well. So, for two whole years Clara watched over her brother and tended to his food, medicine, and other needs. Sure enough, David got well, and the doctor called Clara a natural nurse.

When Clara grew up, however, she became a school teacher. But when the American Civil War began, in 1861, Clara spent her time helping the soldiers get the clothing and medical supplies they needed. She would even go out onto the battlefield to give food and water to the soldiers who had been hurt. After the war was over, Clara started the Red Cross Organization in the United States. In the years that followed, Clara Barton and the American Red Cross helped people who were in floods, tornadoes, fires, and earthquakes, as well as soldiers in wars. So, when you see the big red cross that stands for the American Red Cross, think about Clara Barton that very special young girl who became a very special HERO.

Just over two hundred years ago, where the state of Idaho is now, a little Indian girl was born in a tribe called the Shoshonis. She was given the name, Sacajawea, which meant Bird Woman. Life was very hard for her tribe, so even as a little girl she had to learn how to work.

Then one day Sacajawea was stolen away from her own camp and taken to live with an enemy tribe. Of course, this meant her whole life would be different. It even meant she had to learn a different language. Through her early years, no one could ever imagine how this one little girl would contribute to the history of America.

You see, most of our great country had not even been explored two hundred years ago when Sacajawea was a girl. So, President Thomas Jefferson gave two men the huge job of traveling through the wild wooded regions that had not been settled. These two men were Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. They were brave and willing to do what the president asked, but it was a dangerous job. Fortunately for them, they met up with a Sacajawea and her husband who then traveled with the men. Sacajawea showed Lewis and Clark how to survive in the wild unexplored land. Lewis and Clark were so grateful that they named a river after her. Now, her picture is even on the gold one-dollar coin. Because of her HELPFULNESS, Sacajawea became a real HERO.

We all have some special friends who really only live in books we read about them. Do any of these friends sound familiar? Ramona Quimby, Fudge, Henry Huggins, Ellen Tebbits, and Runaway Ralph? Well, if it had not been for a wonderful lady named Beverly Cleary, we wouldn t have those great friends like Ramona and her sister Beezus.

When Beverly was just a young girl in school, she had a hard time learning to read, but after she worked at it very hard, she found that she loved reading, especially books that were fun. In fact, she loved books so much, she decided to be a writer when she grew up. She w ent to college to learn to be a librarian but she kept her dream about writing books. After she was married, her husband asked her one day why she didn t just go ahead and write a book. She laughed and said, Because I never have a sharpened pencil?! Well, the very next day, Mr. C leary came home with a brand new pencil sharpener so she could begin writing. First, she wrote about Henry Huggins

and his dog Ribsy. And she just kept on writing, mostly about the everyday things that children do.

Of all her characters, Beverly Cleary said that Ramona is the most like she was as a child. She wanted the children who read her books to find characters like themselves. Most of all she wanted her books to be fun and funny like the ones she enjoyed reading as a little girl. She has reached her goal of making children everywhere happy with her books. She has become a HERO.

Araminta Ross was born on March 10, but no one is quite sure what year it was. Most people think it was in 1822. You see, Araminta’s parents were slaves on a large plantation in Maryland. Mr. and Mrs. Ross had nine children, and life was extremely hard for them. Araminta was often beaten by the people she was forced to work for. As she grew older, she decided she would try to escape and go to Pennsylvania, where slavery was not allowed, and that’s exactly what she did. But when she reached freedom, she realized she wanted her family and other slaves to be free, too.

Araminta started learning about something called the Underground Railroad, which really wasn’t a railroad at all, nor was it underground, although there were some tunnels underground in certain places that runaway slaves could hide in. The Underground Railroad was really a lot of caring people who worked together helping runaway slaves move from one safe house to another as they would hide from the slave owners who would capture or kill them if they could. Araminta learned how to work with the people of the Underground Railroad, and she went back to save her family. Then she went back many more times, and eventually saved over 300 other slaves from captivity and cruelty. All in all, tens of thousands of slaves were helped by the people of the Underground Railroad, and Araminta was a big part of that!

As Araminta Ross grew older, she married a man named John Tubman, so she became Araminta Tubman. But then she changed her first name, too, some say, to honor her mother. Harriet was her mother’s name, so Araminta Tubman became Harriet Tubman, an amazingly special HERO.

Jack was a small boy who was not very strong. In fact, the doctors had said he really shouldn t do many physical things. But Jack refused to accept that. His family spent the summers at their beach home in France, and he loved playing and swimming in the Atlantic Ocean. He loved watching the ships move across the ocean, and he loved throwing stones in the water.

Jack also liked studying machines and building small machines that really worked. When he was only 11 years old, he built a model of an ocean crane. When he was 13, he invented a small working electric car that ran on batteries. People w ere amazed! Shortly after that, home movie cameras began to be sold in stores and Jack saved his money to buy one. He loved making films and dreamed of having his own movie making company someday. Water, machines, and movies. Those w ere Jack s favorite things, and it was his use of those three things that eventually made him a HERO.

Jack was actually named Jacques Jacques Cousteau. He was born in France during the early 1900s. That small boy who was not very strong became an excellent underwater swimmer, and so that he could stay underwater for long periods of time, he invented the Aqua-lung, a machine that would allow people to breathe and stay underwater. It also allowed him to take his movie camera in a water-tight case dow n to the ocean floor and capture on film what people had never been able to see before. Eventually Jacques Cousteau did start his own movie making company. He won three academy awards for his undersea films and he wrote books about sea life. Jacques Cousteau was the first to show people the beauty of the ocean and the importance of taking care of it.

Jacques Cousteau became a HERO.

operator in a very large airplane during World War II. After that, he went to college and graduated in 1949. Then it was time to get really serious about the thing he loved most acting!

In 1953, Paul Newman got his first real break as an actor when Warner Brothers Studios hired him. Soon, it was one big movie after another until he became a movie super star! Paul Newman became very famous and very wealthy, too! But he knew that some people were very poor and needed HELP.

That s when he realized he could HELP. You see, for years he had loved making special salad dressing and then giving it to friends. Well, he decided to start a salad dressing company and give the money from that company to people and organizations that really needed it. So that s exactly what he did. Today, Newman s Own Salad Dressing Company makes millions and millions of dollars for charity.

Yes, that little Paul Newman, who HELPED his father around the store, grew up to be someone who found a way to HELP a lot of other people in a very special w ay. He grew up to become...a HERO!

Mary Jane McLeod was the fifteenth child born to her parents! But she was the very first one born after President Abraham Lincoln had free all of the slaves. The McLeods were very poor, but worked hard on their farm in South Carolina. Mary was happy to work hard and H ELP her family. But more than anything, she wanted to learn to read! It didn't look like that could ever happen, though, because there had never been schools for slaves, and there were not any schools for the children of slaves. Mary knew that was not fair.

Then one day a lady came to their cotton field and said she had been sent by a church to start a school that Mary could go to. At last, Mary would learn to read. She learned many other wonderful things, too! She studied very hard in school, and later in college.

When Mary grew up she got married, and became Mary McLeod Bethune. Even as an adult, though, she remembered what it was like as a little girl when there were no schools for her to go to, and she knew that was still a problem in a lot of places.

So she went to work doing something about it. She started a small school that began with only five little girls. But the school grew and grew.

Later, Mary started a college, and she started a hospital for sick children right next door. She even HELPED the president of the United States work to provide education and jobs for young people. But you know, it started when she was just a little girl, because Mary McLeod Bethune saw things that were unfair, and she decided to HELP bring justice for all people no matter what color their skin was. And because of that, she became a HERO.

Once, he took a trip on a large ship to Europe, and that s when he had his very best invention idea of all. You see, it really bothered him to see those little children on the ship who did not have any milk to drink. Of course, there were no refrigerators in those days, so there was no way to keep milk fresh on long trips. Gail Borden thought and thought about it until he invented a machine that could condense milk and put it into cans cans that didnt need to be refrigerated. Soon, he built a milk canning factory and a dairy company, and Gail Borden became very wealthy. He was then able to HELP people even more. In fact, he spent the rest of his life HELPING to build churches and schools for poor people.

Today, Borden s milk, butter, yogurt, ice cream, and other products can be found in almost any store. All because of a very HELPFUL little boy who grew up to be a very HELPFUL HERO!

Albert Schweitzer was a very special HERO in our world. He was born in Germany in 1875, and his whole life was about HELPING people and animals. He believed that all life was a wonderful gift, that every living thing wanted to live, and that every living thing had the right to live. He even won the very prestigious Nobel Peace Prize because of his work and his writings. When Albert was a young boy in school, he learned several different languages, and he studied music.

Albert Schweitzer later became a doctor. He devoted his whole life to making life better for people who were not as lucky as he was. After living in France for a while, he moved his family to Africa and built a small hospital there. More and more sick people started coming to his hospital. Some brought babies that had no parents to protect them. Some brought old people who had no home. Dr. Schweitzer never turned any of them away.

Among the many words of wisdom spoken by Albert Schweitzer, he said, “One thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.”

You know, serving is just another word for HELPING. And people who HELP are called HEROES just like Albert Schweitzer.

Neil was only two-years-old when his father took him to the National Air Races in Cleveland, Ohio. That was all the way back in 1932, but even then, Neil knew he liked airplanes!

While he was still very young, he began doing his share of the family work by mowing the yard, weeding the garden, and washing clothes. When Neil and his parents weren’t working, his mother spent many hours reading to him. Neil loved books, and when he was in the first grade, he read 90 books!

Also, when was in the first grade, his father took him on his very first plane ride! And soon after that, Neil started building model airplanes. As he grew older, his models became bigger and better and more complicated. He also had a great interest in science and math and he started studying about stars and planets. He loved looking through a telescope at the night sky. When he was old enough, Neil worked hard to earn enough money for flying lessons. And on his 16th birthday, he got his pilot’s license.

Later Neil became a pilot for the United States Navy and after that, a test pilot for the Air Force. Then, he joined the space program, and the rest, as they say, is history—very important history! Because young Neil, Neil Armstrong worked hard and studied hard to prepare himself and because he made good choices along the way, he had the opportunity on July 20, 1969 to become the very first man ever to walk on the moon! He became a HERO!

Young Freddy was born in Western Pennsylvania in the Spring of 1928. His parents were very wealthy, and while they had nearly everything they could want, they were also very thankful for all they had. They were thankful for each other, too.

Freddy’s grandfather would often say to him, “You make this day special just by being yourself. Remember, there’s only one person in the world like you, and I like you just the way you are!”

When Freddy saw some of his friends trying to act like other kids at school, he thought how silly that was. Why didn’t they just be themselves?

Well, young Freddy, Fred Rogers always was himself, and many people think one of the most important things about him was the way he treated everyone around him. Fred also knew how important education was so he did his very best all through school and in college.

In 1951, he got a job working at a television station. In 1953, he started his own program called, The Children’s Corner because he thought helping children learn was better than just making them laugh. Then in 1963, he created a show called Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Soon, millions of children started watching. Later the children who watched Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood grew up and had children of their own who also watched Mr. Rogers almost every day!

Yes, that Freddy Rogers, who’s grandfather often told him he was special just by being himself — that same Fred Rogers grew up to be Mister Rogers. And Mister Rogers was a HERO!

Once, in the very early 1900s, there was a little girl named Amelia, but everyone called her Meely. She and her younger sister were very adventurous. They also loved horses, and they loved reading. Almost every night they would read aloud to each other.

When Meely Amelia got old enough, she started working at a hospital in Canada. That’s when she met some pilots who had just come back from flying their airplanes in World War I, and she got her first airplane ride. She knew right then that she, too, would become a pilot.

Meely, or Amelia as they called her by then, wanted to show the world that women could also do things that everyone thought only men could do. She did learn to fly, and she had the courage to set goals and do many great things. For example, Amelia became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. She had many other record-breaking flights, too.

Amelia was now very famous, and people paid her to write about her adventures and lecture about them. Her last big adventure started in the spring of 1937. She wanted to be the first person to fly around the world at the equator. And even though she did not make it quite all the way, because of her courage, she became an inspiration to people everywhere. And for that, Amelia Earhart became a HERO.

Langston Hughes was born in Joplin, Missouri in 1902, but all through his childhood, he and his mother lived in a lot of different cities. Langston was a good student in school, and while he enjoyed many things, he loved writing poetry the most. He began writing seriously when he was in the eighth grade, so by the time he was a young man, he was very, very good at it.

Some of Langston s poems were happy, and some were sad, but all of his poems were about the hard life that black people faced in the early nineteen-hundreds. Eventually, Langston moved to Harlem, a part of New York City where only black people lived. He loved Harlem very much and wrote a lot about it. He loved the people; he loved their music, and all their special talents. Over time, people like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks, and many others had HELPED provide opportunities for the people in places like Harlem, and others all over the country who had been treated so badly. Many used those opportunities to make better lives for themselves and their families. But many turned to drugs and fighting, thinking that would give them a better life. Langston knew those things would ruin lives, not make them better, so he wrote about that, too. Langston Hughes also wrote many books, and even plays that showed his love for people and how they lived. He became very famous, and he became a HERO to people everywhere who cared about how we treat each other and how we all try to make better lives for our families and our neighbors. Yes, that little boy named Langston Langston Hughes, who loved writing so much grew up to be a very special HERO.

Little Henry, Henry Ford, was born when Abraham Lincoln was president before there were electric lights, or cars, or airplanes. He was curious about animals and plants, but most of all he was curious about tools and machines. Sometimes Henry s curiosity got him into trouble, like the time he took apart his brother s brand new toy just to see what made it w ork! Sometimes Henry s curiosity gave him wonderful ideas to HELP make life easier for himself or for his family. You see, Henry Ford did not wait for other people to work everything out for him. Even though he had to work hard in school and on the farm, he relied on himself to look for a better way to get jobs done. He especially loved math in school, and he used it to help him understand how to fix things and how to make new things.

For years, Henry thought about how he might invent an easier and faster way for people to travel faster than horses pulling wagons. Sure enough, when Henry Ford was still a young man, he made his first horseless carriage. Later, he figured out how to make thousands of cars, all just alike, on an assembly line, which made cars affordable for almost everyone. So the next time you see a car or a truck with the name Ford on it, remember the little boy named Henry Henry Ford, who was always looking for the best way to do things, and who certainly was a HERO.

The barn was their theater, and they loved performing the stories of Jack-and-the-Beanstalk, Cinderella, and many others.

As Louisa grew older she became popular with the younger children for the wonderful stories she told. She also began realizing how little money her family had and how her parents had to work so hard. She had always been HELPFUL, but now Louisa knew she could really HELP. She began writing stories for magazines and newspapers. The talent she had enjoyed sharing with others as a child now HELPED her make a name for herself, as well as some money to send home to her family.

After that, a publisher asked Louisa if she would write a book for girls. When she began thinking about what she should write, memories of her childhood came to mind—fun with her sisters and the love from their parents. She began writing her book about all of those people and events. She called it Little Women, a story that made people laugh and cry. It was so popular that Louisa had enough money to buy a new home for her parents. All of her books are still loved and read today. Little Women has even been made into a movie—more than once! And Louisa May Alcott became a HERO.

Louis Braille was born in France in 1809, and while he was still very young he began going to work with his father who made saddles for horses.

One day when Louis was only three years old he was trying to punch holes in a piece of leather just like his father did. What happened next would change Louis s life forever, because the sharp tool he was using slipped and went right into his eye. Soon, his eye became infected, and it wasn t long until that infection spread to his other eye, too, and he became totally blind.

Later, Louis went to a special school for blind people, where he worked very hard and made excellent grades. He also learned how to play the piano and the organ. He was sad, though, that he could not see, and he was especially upset that he could not read. But that did not stop him! He was determined to do something about it! While he was still a young man, Louis Braille invented a way for blind people to read with their fingers! Each letter in the alphabet and each number was represented by a pattern of

raised dots that people could feel. That type of writing became known as Braille, named after young Louis.

Today, many books are written in Braille. You can also find Braille in places like elevators where there are patterns of little bumps by the buttons and by the floor numbers.

Yes, young Louis Braille, was determined to make things better for himself and for other people who could not see. And for that, he became a HERO!

If your birthday happens to be on September 24th, then you share a birthday with a kid who grew up to be famous all over the world! He was born in Greenville, Mississippi in 1936, and his name was James Henson, but everybody called him Jim.

Jim had a very happy childhood, and he loved exploring. He would explore the countryside around his house, and he would explore his own artistic abilities. He had a natural talent for creating art out of different materials and for creating fun stories.

Because of his talent and his attitude of excellence, he was hired by a television station in Washington D.C. to do a puppet show while he was still in high school! Once again, his excellence astounded everyone, and soon he was doing a LOT of television shows and creating his own puppets except to be different, he called his puppets “Muppets.”

One of Jim’s first muppets (and probably still the most popular) was named Kermit after one of his childhood friends.

Soon, the people who started a program called Sesame Street asked Jim Henson to create some stars for their new show, and that’s when his sense of excellence came through again with Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, and many others.

Not only did Jim Henson practice excellence in everything he did, he was a genuinely nice person. His business partner for many years, Frank Oz said that Jim Henson was as close to how you’re suppose to behave toward other people as anyone he’s ever known. Jim Henson was a HERO!

He started acting on stage when he was only eight years old, and he worked hard to be the best actor he could possibly be. Not long after that, he learned how to play the guitar. As a teenager, he learned a lot about professional race car driving, but many of the older kids were still being mean to him. One day, Johnny found… a hundred dollar bill! He tried to turn it in, but he was told there was no way to know who had lost it. So Johnny knew this was his chance to change things.

He got a membership to a health club and started working out every day until he was strong and healthy. He was no longer overweight! Then, only a short time later when he was 18 years old, another big chance came his way. He tried out for the part of Bo Duke in a brand new television show called The Dukes of Hazzard. And you know what? He got the part! Later, he was hired to be an actor in a lot of movies and other television shows.

But all along, John knew there had to be more important things in life. One day, he and his friend, Marie Osmond, worked very hard together and started the Children’s Miracle Network, an organization that today has helped over 17 million kids! Yes, that little Johnny Schneider, who was picked on a lot when he was a child, grew up to be John Schneider the television and movie star who still works very hard to help other people in a lot of very special ways. He grew up to be… a HERO!

Even when he was a little boy growing up in New York City, Jonas Salk had an attitude of excellence. He did his best at everything. H e did his best in school, and he made excellent grades. He also did his best when he played! Jonas and his friends didn't have money for real baseball equipment, so they used a broom handle for a bat and anything they could find for bases. Jonas loved baseball, but his main interest was reading books. Because of his excellent grades, he was chosen to go to a special high school for outstanding students. Before he was even sixteen years old, he was ready for college. And once again, he was an excellent student.

In college he began to have a great interest in science, and by the time Jonas graduated, he had decided to become a medical scientist. He wanted to find ways to protect people from diseases. At first, he worked to discover a medicine that would keep soldiers from getting the flu during World War II. And that s exactly what he did!

Dr. Salk then turned his attention to a disease called polio. If polio did not kill the person who had it, he or she almost always was left crippled. After a lot of work and research, Dr. Salk did discover a way to give people shots that would immunize them against polio. In 1955, it was announced to the world that his vaccine did prevent polio. And Jonas Salk that little boy from New York, who chose excellence in everything he did, became a HERO!

It was January 23, 1951 when a little boy named Chesley was born in Denison, Texas. His father, Dr. Sullenberger was a dentist and his mother was an elementary school teacher. Even at a very young age, Chesley was interested in flying as he watched military airplanes from the nearby Air Force base fly over his house. He became an honor student in school, but in his spare time, he liked building model airplanes and model aircraft carriers.

All through school he participated in academic competitions, while continuing his interest in flying. He got his pilot’s license while he was still in high school. After college, he joined the United States Air Force where he became a fighter pilot. By this time, Chesley Sullenberger became known by his nickname, “Sully.”

In 1980, Captain Sully became an airline pilot. But it wasn’t until January 15, 2009 that Captain Sully’s name was world famous. It was on that day when he was piloting U.S. Airways Flight 1549, very shortly after take-off from New York’s LaGuardia Airport, that both engines quit from hitting a flock of birds. One engine was on fire, and there was no place to land. The airplane was not high enough yet to turn around and go back to the airport. There was only one choice— crash—but where? Nothing but buildings and narrow streets as far as he could see. “We’re gonna be in the Hudson,” Captain Sully told air traffic controllers on the radio in a calm voice. And indeed he did land that big Airbus 320 in the Hudson river—a VERY difficult thing to do. One slight miscalculation and the airplane would have disintegrated. But, on that day, in that moment, all of Chesley Sullenberger’s training, all of his precision, and all of his ability to think quickly came into play. On that day, and in that moment, Captain Sully saved the lives of all 155 passengers on board. On that day, and in that moment, Chesley Sullenberger became a HERO!

William David was the only child of Albert and Amanda Coolidge. His parents owned a farm in Massachusetts during the late 1800s, so there was plenty of work for young Will to do. He also studied hard in the small school he attended.

Somehow, Will still had time for a hobby which he got pretty good at. He loved taking pictures. In fact, he learned all he could about photography while he was still a young boy.

After graduating from high school in 1891, William was off to MIT (the Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to study in the field of electrical engineering. Then he went to Germany where he could learn more about scientific research.

It was there in 1898 that Will studied about X-rays which had been discovered only three years before but had not been perfected for practical use. After his return to the United States, William went to work for the General Electric Power Company where he created a tube that finally made X-rays both safe and convenient for the medical field.

Even though nearly 100 years have passed since his invention called the Coolidge tube, it is still the basic design used in the technology of X-ray today. No one could possibly count the number of lives that have been saved thanks to that little Massachusetts farm boy’s attitude of hard work, study, and interest in learning new things. And for that, William David Coolidge became a HERO.

But, now that he has earned SO MUCH MONEY, what does he do with it? He GIVES it away—to HELP all kinds of people in all kinds of ways. In fact, he has pledged to give away 99-percent of ALL his money! In 2006, he gave over 30-Billion-Dollars to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, a very well known charitable organization.

Condoleezza was born in November of 1954. Her name was taken from an Italian music term meaning to play or sing with sweetness. Condi, as everyone began to call her, learned how to read when most children learn to walk! By the time she was 3 years old, she was taking classical piano lessons, figure skating, ballet, and French.

Although her parents were well educated, and they always insisted on the best of everything for little Condi, life was not always easy. They lived in Alabama in a time of segregation when white people and black people were kept apart. Condi’s parents believed in education and accomplishment. They said it brings a much better life, and it helps to bring respect. Condi said that her father believed it was much better to fight racial injustice with your mind than with violence! Still, it’s impossible for Condi to forget about what happened in 1963 when a very unfair and hateful man killed four girls and hurt a lot of other people with a bomb all because their skin was a different color from his. One of the girls he killed was Condi’s good friend.

As Condi grew older and went to college, she became very interest in something called political science. So she studied hard to learn how the governments of the world worked, and she thought that maybe someday she could help them work together! She got to know many very important people, and eventually she became the National Security Advisor to the President of the United States! And later, Condoleezza Rice became Secretary of State for the United States of America. But she didn’t start out being powerful and important. She started out as a little girl whose parents helped her to have a love for learning. Then she worked hard, and eventually she became a true world-class HERO!

On August 5, 1981, a very special girl was born, and her parents named her Rachel Joy Scott. Everyone could see that Rachel was a kind, considerate, and all around sweet girl who always wanted to make people around her smile. She also played the piano really well, and enjoyed that very much.

When she was still very young, Rachel started keeping diaries. In her diaries, she wrote all about how and why she believed in God, and about how she thought people should treat each other with kindness. She was only thirteen years old when she drew an outline of her hands and wrote, “These hands belong to Rachel Joy Scott, and will someday touch millions of people’s hearts.” She also said, “I have this theory that if one person can go out of their way to show compassion, then it will start a chain reaction of the same. People will never know how far a little kindness can go.” Rachel always talked about kindness, and when she saw other kids being ignored or being teased, she would always try to become their friend and HELP them to not feel so sad.

In 1999, Rachel was killed at Columbine High School in Colorado by two tragically misguided young men, who themselves had been victims of bullying. But because her kindness and her love for others was so strong, she continues to be a HERO for millions of people, today.

Her father and the rest of her family talk to students in schools about how people should treat each other. They ask students to take “Rachel’s Challenge,” and to start right away deciding to HELP other people and treat them with kindness. John Tesh was born on July 9, 1952 and grew up in Garden City, New York with two sisters, and with his mom and dad. John always loved music, and in fact, he started playing the piano and the trumpet when he was only six years old! A little later, when he was a teenager, he studied music with teachers from The Juilliard School, and he played with the New York State Symphonic Orchestra. At the same time, he also played the organ in a rock band.

After he graduated from college, he got a job as a news reporter at a television station in Durham, North Carolina. Later, he worked for a television station in Nashville, Tennessee during the same time that Oprah Winfrey was working for another station just across town! In the 1990s, he hosted a network show called Entertainment Tonight. But John still loved his music. He worked hard, and eventually became a recording artist, selling millions of CDs.

Today, John Tesh plays and sings Contemporary Christian music, and he also does something very special to HELP millions of people everyday. He has his own radio show on hundreds of radio stations across America and in other countries, too. On his show, he plays music, but more importantly, he talks about lots and lots of ways people can have better lives. He calls the information he gives out, “Intelligence for your life,” and it really does HELP a lot of people. If you listen to his radio show, it might HELP you, too! Yes, John Tesh, the boy who learned to play the piano and the trumpet when he was only six years old always loved figuring out special ways to HELP other people. He grew up to be a HERO!

On December 4, 1982, a little boy was born in Melbourne, Australia. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vujicic named him Nicholas James, but his family called him Nick. Nick Vujicic was very different from other children, and because of that, he had very few friends. In school, he was teased, laughed at, and made fun of by a lot of bullies. You see, the thing that made him so different from other children is that Nick was born with no arms and no legs.

By the time Nick was eight years old, he was having thoughts about not even wanting to live anymore. But soon he began to change his thinking. He started working very, very hard to learn simple things that most people can do easily. Even though he did not have legs, he did have part of a foot with two toes. With that foot, he learned how to write and he even learned how to type! He began learning other things like how to brush his teeth and comb his hair. He learned how to pick up a telephone with his foot and throw it onto his shoulder holding it there with his ear. He learned how to swim, and he became a very good swimmer!

As Nick grew older, he went to college. After he graduated, he began speaking to large groups of people. Today, he loves talking to young people and teaching them about dealing with problems in their lives. Nick would certainly know all about growing up with problems! So far, Nick has spoken to over two million people in twelve countries, and he continues to inspire people to do their best even when things are not going well in their lives.

Yes, Nick Vujicic, the little boy with no arms and no legs made a big choice when he was still very young. Instead of choosing to feel sorry for himself, like he was doing when he was eight years old, he chose to use his problems to HELP millions of other people. He chose to become a HERO!

It was hard to hold young Sammy back when he decided to do something! His family lived on a farm in Oklahoma until Sammy was five years old, and then they moved to Missouri. There Sammy became a Boy Scout, and when he was in the eighth grade, he became an Eagle Scout. In fact, he was the youngest eagle scout in the history of the State!

Going through school was not easy for him. It seemed like other children could make good grades very easily. Not so for Sammy. He had to work hard for his good grades, but he did, and he became an honor student. School work wasn’t all that he did, though. He had to get up very early every morning to milk the cow, bottle the milk, and then deliver it to customers. He also delivered newspapers!

Sammy worked his way through college by waiting tables in restaurants, and by being a life guard. A little while after college, he was able to borrow enough money to buy a small store. Later he sold that store and bought another one. This time he named it after himself. His last name was Walton, so he called it Walton’s 5 and dime.

Because he worked hard to offer good service, and because year after year he kept his promise of low prices, more and more people began to trust him. Soon, Sam Walton was able to built another store—and then another. Suddenly, it seemed, there were Walton stores everywhere. By this time he wanted to call his stores Walton’s Market, but he decided to shorten that name a little and instead of Walton’s Market, he would simply call them Wal — Mart. Wal-Mart! And Sam Walton became a HERO.

“It’s never too late to learn.” Those words were very special to a boy named Carter Woodson. Carter’s father and mother had both been slaves until the end of the Civil War. Slaves were not allowed go to school, but Carter’s father always told him, “It’s never too late to learn.” And Carter did learn. He learned to read, and he read all he could every day. It wasn’t until he was eighteen, though, that he had his first chance to go to high school. He studied hard and graduated in only a year and a half—then he went to college! After college, he became the principal of his old high school! He was very proud to have that job, and always told his students, “It’s never too late to learn.”

Then Carter had the opportunity to be a teacher in the Philippine Islands. When he started teaching the Filipino children from books that American children used, they simply weren’t learning. One day, he sang a song for them about an apple tree, but apple trees don’t grow in the Philippines. Carter began to understand these children needed to learn about things in their own country and about their own HEROES. When he began teaching them those things, the Filipino children became proud of who they were and started to learn quickly.

Carter thought about school books back home in America. There weren’t many stories in them about the people who were slaves in early America and then became HEROES. Knowing it’s never too late to learn, he began learning and teaching about important Americans of African Heritage. He wrote books about black history, he and started Black History Week which was the beginning of what is now Black History Month. Yes, Carter Woodson certainly grew up to be a HERO.

Wilbur was 12 years old, and Orville was only 7 when their father brought home the strangest toy they had ever seen. Their dad showed them how to spin this odd looking gadget and make it fly!! They made that toy fly over and over again. The brothers began to take a real interest in how things fly. They dreamed of someday building a man-sized machine that could fly using its own power.

Wilbur and Orville spent a lot of time studying in school and learning also about all kinds of machines. They learned how machines worked and how to fix them when they would break. They built their own printing press, and they started a newspaper. They started a shop where they built and repaired bicycles. But the two brothers had not forgotten their dream of building a man-sized flying machine. They studied birds to learn what makes them fly. They built wind tunnels to test different wing designs. They built and tested a lot of gliders.

And then at a place called Kitty Hawk, North Carolina on December 17th, 1903 as his brother watched, Orville Wright actually flew the world’s first real airplane! An airplane that he and Wilbur had designed and built. They called it the Wright Flyer. Yes, because of the hard work and dedication of these two brothers, today, we have airplanes, and the Wright Brothers became HEROES!

Booker T. Washington was born in 1856. During his lifetime he helped thousands of people get a wonderful education and have a better life! Now, that having been said, it’s important to understand that Booker T. Washington was actually born into slavery! That means his whole family was extremely poor, and they had to work from early morning until late at night for people who always told them what to do and didn’t pay them. There was no opportunity for school or for learning to read.

Booker was actually only six years old when President Abraham Lincoln freed all of the slaves, but he still had to work very, very hard just like his older brother and sister. Sometimes he had to load heavy bags of corn on horses backs, he had to chop trees, and he even had to work down in a mine. Booker’s mother knew her son was very smart. One day, she found some old school books that had been thrown away and she hurried home with the treasure she had rescued. Booker was so proud to turn the ragged pages of an old spelling book. Now he could learn to read!

Because of his love of learning and his hard work, that young child named Booker T. Washington became a great teacher who was respected by the whole world! He became a HERO!

Even when Eli was a small boy, he loved whittling things from wood. His father, Mr. Whitney helped him learn. Eli could whittle wooden whistles, broom handles, and even parts for his mother’s butter churn. One day a new family with a boy just about Eli’s age moved into the house just down the road. Eli’s new friend had a fancy pocket knife that Eli really liked. With a knife like that, he knew he could make just about anything!

Then something happened, and Eli had to make a decision. You see, Eli’s new friend lost his fancy pocket knife. It fell out of his pocket onto the dusty road, but later, Eli found it. Oh, how he wanted a knife like that!

“Finders keepers.” he thought at first, but his other thoughts kept saying, “It’s not yours. It’s not yours.”

So he chose to give the knife back to his friend. He knew how important it was to do what was right.

After he gave back the knife, it wasn’t long until he had the opportunity to earn a knife just like the one his friend had.

Eli spent his entire life making things, fixing things, and even inventing new things. We remember most his invention of something called a cotton gin, a machine that separates cotton seeds from fluffy white cotton. And today, we can thank him for all the comfortable clothes we wear and other things we have made of cotton. Just imagine, that kid from long ago who was determined to make right choices, grew up to truly make a difference in our world.

Jack Robinson was born in Cairo, Georgia in 1919. He was the youngest of five children and when he was just a baby, his father left the family. That’s when his mother, who was extremely poor, took all five children and moved to Pasadena, California. There, they were the only black family on their block, and they were treated horribly by their neighbors. As a child, Jackie (as they called him) learned to take care of himself, making his mother’s job of raising five children by herself a little easier. He also loved all kinds of sports. And even though his family did not have much money, he found a way to go to college, and there, he became the first athlete to win varsity letters in four different sports! But after two years in college, he didn’t have the money to continue, and by then World War Two had already begun, so Jackie decided to join the Army. Even in the Army, though, others bullied him just because of the color of his skin.

After the war ended, Jackie came back home and played one season in what was called the Negro Baseball League, traveling all over the Midwest with the Kansas City Monarchs. Then, in 1947, a man named Branch Rickey, who was president of The Brooklyn Dodgers talked to Jackie about joining his team. He DID, and Jackie Robinson became the first black player in Major League Baseball since1889, when baseball became segregated.

It was very, very difficult for him, though, because he was treated so badly by nearly everyone in the major leagues at the time, even by his own team mates, simply because his skin was a different color. For a long time he had only two white friends, the team’s president, Branch Rickey, and shortstop, Pee Wee Reece, who turned out to be a great friend for Jackie. But in spite of all the bullying, he kept his mind on the game and he became one of the greatest players ever in Major League Baseball. Not only did he “break the color barrier,” he set a wonderful example for hundreds of other players to follow. And he became a HERO to millions.

His jersey had the number 42 on it. When a team has such an outstanding player, it is traditional to “retire” his jersey number from that team when that player retires. In Jackie Robinson’s case, though, he became so respected that the number 42 was, and still is retired from ALL major league baseball—the ONLY number ever to receive that honor.

Tony Mahavorick was born in Glendora, California on Leap-Day, February 29th, 1960. Even as a young child, Tony was always asking questions about the world around him and answering those questions was almost a full time job for his mother! Life was difficult in those early years, and as Tony got a little older, he did everything he could to help his mother and his younger brother and sister. When Tony was 13, his mother married again, this time to a very nice man named Jim Robbins. That’s when Tony Mahavorick became Tony Robbins.

Life was still hard, though because this new family was very poor. In fact, that November, they didn’t have enough money for a Thanksgiving meal. But then some very kind person put everything they needed for a great Thanksgiving meal right at their front door. Young Tony was SO amazed by this act of kindness that he made a promise to himself that very day. He promised to work really hard and become the kind of person who could afford to be very generous to others.

A very short time later when Tony was in the 9th grade, he KNEW exactly what he wanted to do! He wanted to be a sports writer and cover not school games but major league games. With his great determination, and because he lived in Southern California, he was able to find and interview professional football players, baseball players, golfers, and even professional sportscasters! And with that VERY BIG start in the 9th grade, he has continued to do EVERYTHING in a BIG way! Over time, he became a great speaker and a life coach who helps heads of major corporations and even leaders of countries all over the world with his advice about success. He has made MILLIONS and MILLIONS of dollars, all as a part of keeping the promise he made on that Thanksgiving Day so long ago – a promise to help people in every way he could. Hans Augusto Rey was born on September 16, 1898 in Hamburg, Germany. Growing up, Hans lived near a world famous zoo called the Hagenbeck Zoo. He loved that zoo, AND he loved drawing pictures of the different animals. One day he met a young girl named Margaret who also loved to draw but she was on her way to another city to study art. After Hans and Margaret were both grown, problems that led to World War II were already making it hard for their families to continue to live in Germany. That’s when they moved to Brazil in South America, and that’s WHERE Hans and Margaret met again and decided to get married. Then, they moved to Paris in France.

Hans, still loving to draw animals, created some newspaper cartoons about a giraffe. When a man who published books saw the cartoons, he asked Hans to add to them and make a book. So, Hans created a children’s book called Raffy and the Nine Monkeys. One of those 9 monkeys was a mischievous little guy named Curious George. It was decided that Curious George deserved a book of his own! So Hans and Margaret began to work on a manuscript. Before the new book could be published, the war began causing serious problems in France. Hans and Margaret needed to escape. They had 2 bicycles. With them they took only warm coats, a little food, and five manuscripts including Curious George.

It was four days of bike riding before they were able to get out of France. Then they sold their bikes for train tickets to take them where they would be safe. Eventually, they boarded a ship bound for New York City to begin their new life as authors of children’s books. The very first Curious George book was published in 1941. It, and following adventures have been entertaining us for nearly 80 years. More than 25 million copies have been sold in different languages for children around the world. Then came the Curious George Foundation which has the jobs of helping children learn and explore, as well as benefitting animals. Aren’t you glad Hans grew up near that zoo? I know I am!

Life was hard for the Norris family in the 1940s. They were very poor, and even as a small boy, Carlos Norris had to work hard to help his mother take care of the family. In spite of the fact that his family moved from Oklahoma to California and then to Arizona, Carlos still made good grades in school. It was not easy for him, though. He had to work really hard. He also had a problem with some bullies at school that didn’t like him very much.

After high school, Carlos Norris joined the United States Air Force. While he was in Korea, he started studying karate. At first he was not very good at it, but he worked and worked and worked at it until he became exceptionally good. The best in the world in fact! He won the world championship six years in a row! Nobody before that had even won it two years in a row. It was about that time that he began going by his nickname, “Chuck” instead of Carlos.

Eventually Chuck Norris became a movie star, and he had his own TV show called Walker Texas Ranger. He became very famous. But through all of this, and even before his movie career began, he spent a great deal of time teaching karate to young people and even more importantly, teaching them how to have successful lives through self discipline, respect, hard work, honor, and truth. One day, he met with President George Bush and some other very important people. Chuck told them that he wanted to start a program in schools where kids are taught about karate and about how to have really good lives. Today his program is called KickStart and Chuck Norris now works harder than ever to help kids. He also works with other organizations that help young people.

Yes, it was that little boy named Carlos from Oklahoma who worked hard to help his mother raise a family when times were very difficult. That same little boy grew up to be one of the toughest men on the planet. But he uses his talents and his abilities and most of all, his kind and helpful spirit to help change so many people’s lives for the better. And for that, Chuck Norris truly became a HERO!

Although Tom was very shy as a young boy, he was an excellent student in school. Tom was born in Mission, Texas in September of 1924. He was the third oldest of four children in his family, and he respected his father a great deal. Mr. Landry was a volunteer fireman, and Tom would go to fires with his dad whenever he could.

All through his growing up years, Tom’s parents were pretty strict with him. They wanted him to learn how to give of himself and not just look for ways to get what he wanted. The things they taught him were actually a very special gift to him. When young Tom told someone he was going to do something, he always did it, and he did it to the best of his ability because that’s what his parents taught him to do, and he listened to them!

Tom loved sports, too. In high school, he was on the football team, and he played football in college as well. Eventually, he became a football coach. He taught his players how to play football, of course, but he went further to teach them about life and how to become better people.

In 1960, Tom Landry became the first head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, a brand new professional football team at that time. He was the Cowboys’ coach for twenty-nine years! That’s a long time to coach any team!

But, you see, Tom Landry was not just a coach. He was an inspiration to everyone he came in contact with. Yes, he became very famous for leading the Dallas Cowboys to many victories, but that’s not what made him a HERO. He became a HERO because of his passion for life and because of his constant work to help make young people better people. That’s why Tom Landry became a HERO.

Almost everything Thomas Jefferson did in his adult life was to help this great country, a very new country back then, the United States of America. But he didn’t just wake up one day and decide to become a HERO. He learned it as a child.

Thomas was born in Virginia on April 13th, 1743. His father, Peter Jefferson was a successful land owner and noted explorer. Peter Jefferson taught his son well, and Thomas listened to his father’s teachings. Mr. Jefferson also provided opportunities for Thomas to learn science and math along with learning French, Italian, and Spanish. Thomas grew to be tall and lean with sandy hair and a freckled face. He was also very strong, and an excellent horseman.

As Thomas grew older, he had many opportunities to make speeches, something he really did not like doing very much because he didn’t have a very strong voice. But he did it anyway because he always had something to say about helping to build our country’s government and about providing leadership for its people. He was becoming a very great leader!

Later, it was Thomas Jefferson who was chosen to write our Declaration of Independence, because he was so good at putting his thoughts down on paper. He had excellent handwriting too!

Thomas Jefferson soon became the second Governor of the State of Virginia. Then he served as a congressman, followed by being the Vice President of the United States and then the President!

Thomas Jefferson became a great man, a great leader, and certainly a HERO. And it was because even as a child, he worked hard making good choices and started seeing himself growing up to become someone very special!

All around the neighborhood people were talking about that kid named Ray Kroc. “He’s a worker,” they would say as he worked his lemonade stand in front of his parents’ home in Oak Park, Illinois. That was during the very early 1900s. Selling lemonade was how Ray would earn his spending money. After that, but while he was still in school, he worked at a grocery store and a at drug store, and people would still say, “He’s quite the worker!” During that time, his mother taught him how to play the piano, and he worked very hard at that, too!

Ray started his first real job in Chicago in 1922. He began selling paper cups to restaurants and other companies. At night he played the piano at a radio station.

Later, he sold milkshake machines to restaurants. That’s when he began hearing stories about two brothers named Richard and Maurice who had a new kind of restaurant in San Bernardino, California. He decided to fly out to California to meet them. When he did, he saw a brand new way to cook and serve food very quickly so the customers didn’t have to wait. The food had very low prices, too! Richard and Maurice told Ray they had an idea that would help some other people to start their own restaurants. Everybody’s restaurants could have the same name and all of the owners could work together and do things the same way. That idea is called franchising. Ray thought the idea would go nationwide and even worldwide! “This will go anyplace!” he said. So he made a deal with the two brothers.

Once again, Ray was hard at work. He opened his first restaurant back home in Illinois. It wasn’t long before more and more restaurants were opened, and soon they became known by hundreds of millions of people all over the world. Yes, Ray Kroc, that little boy with the front yard lemonade stand knew all about hard work. And by working hard, he grew up to help many, many people become restaurant owners themselves. All of their restaurants, by-the-way, were named after the two brothers, Richard and Maurice whose last name was... McDonald. McDonald’s?! That’s right, McDonald’s!

It was February 21st, 1936, when a very special little girl was born in Houston, Texas. Her name was Barbara Jordan. Barbara was very close to her grandfather Patten, and he taught her many things about life. They would always talk about things that interested Barbara and things that worried her. Barbara’s grandfather encouraged her to be self-sufficient, strong willed, and independent and to never settle for mediocrity.

Education was something that young Barbara took very seriously. It was during her high school years that Barbara was inspired to become a lawyer, and after she went to college and law school, she opened her first law office in 1960. Barbara Jordan always remembered the many life lessons her grandfather Patten had taught her, and she had her own dreams of being a very special person who helped others in need. Soon, she was elected to the Texas house of Representatives, and later she served as a State Senator. Everyone recognized how much she loved the people she represented, and it wasn’t long until she was elected to the United States House of Representatives.

Shortly after Barbara Jordan became ill with a disease called multiple-sclerosis, she was confined to a wheel chair. That’s when she left politics and became a college teacher. She wanted to help young people understand that if they would just diligently follow their dreams and goals, it did not matter if they had been poor or if their skin was a different color or even if they were crippled in a wheel chair. She was an inspiration to everyone and living proof that anyone can be successful if they work at it. Her leadership in that way made Barbara Jordan a very special HERO.

Even as a young boy, Bob Hope had a natural talent for being funny. He was born in England in 1903, and when he was only four years old, he, along with his Mom and Dad, and his six brothers moved to America! Bob’s first name was really Leslie, but everyone called him Bob, and Bob worked hard at everything he did including making up and telling jokes. He also made spending money by selling newspapers and by helping one of his big brothers in a meat market.

One thing that made Bob Hope a very special person was the way he treated other people. When he was doing what he did best, telling jokes and being funny, he was funny for everyone around him. Sometimes we see people who try to be funny by making someone else look bad or feel bad. Bob was never like that. His jokes were funny to everybody, and they never hurt anyone. He made sure of that.

When he grew up, he became a movie star, and people watched him in a lot of very funny movies. He also appeared in many television shows telling his jokes and his funny stories.

Bob Hope is most warmly remembered for visiting American Troops overseas. He loved working for the men and women who defend our country. Sometimes when they are away in foreign countries, they can become very lonesome. Bob was always a reminder to them that the people back home really did care about them. Yes, Bob Hope was a very special HERO!

As a young boy, Patrick was very interested in what the adults around him had to say, so he would sit quietly watching and learning from their conversations and the stories they told of living in the old country. Mr. and Mrs. Henry had come from Scotland to Virginia, one of the original thirteen colonies in what later became the United States of America. Patrick, who had actually been born in Virginia listened and learned about the customs and ways of his ancestors, about working hard, never wasting money, and always dealing fairly with others. Young Patrick also learned how to play the violin, the flute, and the harpsichord. More importantly, Patrick learned carefully as his father taught him about reading, math, history, and foreign languages.

Even when Patrick was a child, his friends would come to him for help in solving their disagreements. He had learned how to carefully hear both sides, think about it awhile, and then give them fair solutions to their problems. This young boy who learned the importance of just quietly listening later became a lawyer then a representative of his people in Virginia and one of the very important HEROES in our nation’s struggle for freedom.

When the United States did win its freedom from England, Patrick Henry became the governor of the state of Virginia. Some of his speeches have been written down and remembered through the years of our history. It was Patrick Henry who said those very famous words, “Give me liberty, or give me death!” Yes, that boy who set his mind to learning everything he could—that boy grew up—and he grew up to become a HERO!

William Fox was a police officer in Canada in June of 1961 when he and his wife, Phyllis, had a son, and they named him Michael. During his childhood, Michael’s family moved a lot because his father was also a member of the Canadian Army. Over time, Michael and his three sisters attended several schools in several different cities, and he made a lot of new friends.

As he grew older, Michael became interested in acting, and when he was 18 years old he moved to Los Angeles, California to pursue acting there. That’s when he changed his name but only a little. His real name is Michael Andrew Fox, but he didn’t like the sound of Michael A. Fox. So he decided to change the A to a J, and he became Michael J. Fox. In 1982, he got a role in a TV show called Family Ties. Then after acting in a few movies, he went on to star in the three Back to the Future movies. That’s when Michael J. Fox became very, very famous.

But in 1996, he announced to the world that he had Parkinson’s Disease. That’s when Michael J. Fox REALLY went to work to help researchers find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease. He created the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research. And although he retired from acting in 2020, he continues to encourage other people who have the disease, and he still helps to raise millions of dollars every year to find a cure.

Yes, Michael Andrew Fox, that boy from Canada grew up to become Michael “J” Fox, the actor, the activist, and the HERO!

Edward Kennedy Ellington was born in 1899 in Washington, D.C. He didn’t much like the name his parents had given him so wherever young Edward went, he told people to call him “Duke.” Even as a child, Duke Ellington was a piano player, and like most piano players, he learned all the basics of counting out the music very strictly, but something inside of him always wanted to change it up a little and make it more interesting! His parents knew he had a very special talent, and they appreciated his hard work.

When Duke was a little older, he heard of a new kind of music called Ragtime. His fingers took to it naturally, and playing the piano became the thing he wanted to do the most! Soon, he was playing his own music for people who came from all around to hear him. The Duke hired other musicians to play his music with him. They called themselves “Duke Ellington and His Orchestra.” He also began writing music that has become very famous in the world of jazz. In fact, the Duke wrote at least 1000 pieces of music for orchestras, choirs, stage plays, and for movies.

He also did something very special for his own people of African heritage. He created some music that he called Black, Brown, and Beige and people loved it. They knew they were listening to great American music by a great American musician. Some people called him “King of the Keys” and some people called him “Piano Prince,” but Edward Kennedy Ellington just wanted to be called “The Duke.”

It was in 1901 that a boy named Walter was born in Chicago. When he was nine years old, his family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, and it was there that he, along with his sister, Ruth, and his brother, Roy went to Benton Grammar School.

Walter had a very special talent for drawing pictures, and he had a very active imagination, too! He especially liked drawing cartoon characters, and he made up stories to go along with his characters. Because of his excellent artwork, he joined the Kansas City Art Institute when he was only fourteen years old! Along about that same time, he got a job as a paperboy, and later he drove an ambulance for the United States Army.

After that, he went back home to continue his drawing, and once again he would settle for nothing less than excellence in the pictures he drew.

In 1923, Walter got a contract to make several cartoons so he and his brother Roy moved to Los Angeles, California. That’s where they were when Walter’s attitude of excellence really began to pay off! You see, he created a character called Mickey Mouse, and Walter — yes, Walt Disney — became famous!

Soon he had to hire other people to help him make a lot of animated movies, including Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, and many more. Walter began to make a lot of other movies, too using real actors instead of cartoon characters. Then came Disney Land, Disney World, and so much more, all designed with excellence in mind by that boy named Walter from Chicago who grew up to be Walt Disney the HERO!

Even as a boy in the 1850s, George wanted badly to help his parents make money for their very large family. So he studied hard all through his young years. He enjoyed learning and especially liked learning about chemicals.

When George was twenty years old, he went to work at a bank. Soon he saved enough money to take a nice vacation. That was pretty exciting, and his friends insisted that George take along a camera. But back then, cameras were the size of a modern microwave oven, and a photographer had to carry a lot of supplies including measuring glasses, trays, and much more. George knew there must be a better way but how?

So George went to work to invent a better camera — one that was small and easy to use. Because he already knew a lot about chemicals, he was able to make a kind of dry film that worked very well, and he designed a small camera that anyone could use. His slogan was, “You push the button, and we’ll do the rest!” Now all he needed was a name for it.

George always thought that “K” was a strong letter. He experimented with names for a while and finally he came up with one that had two “Ks”-- one at each end! K-O-D-A-K. So the next time you see or hear the name Eastman KODAK Company, remember young George Eastman who spent his time learning about something that would one day make him a HERO! His company also made him very rich, but he gave his money away to different causes such as the medical field and the world of music. So George Eastman became an even bigger HERO by helping society with both his talents and his wealth.

In November of 1867, there was a very special girl named Marya Sklodowska, who was born in the country of Poland. Her father and her older sister, Bronia, spent a lot of time HELPING Marya learn to read. She loved reading, and she loved learning. As she grew older, she really became interested in learning math and science! When she was still very young, her sister wanted to go to college and become a doctor, but that cost a lot of money, and their family just didn’t have much money. That’s when Marya decided to get a job to HELP her sister have money for college. Later, her sister finished college, became a doctor, and then HELPED Marya go to college and become a scientist!

Her sister had gone to college in Paris, France, so Marya went to college there, too. Soon, Marya changed her name to Marie, because that’s the French name for Marya. Eventually, she married a man named Pierre Curie, and Marie Sklodowska became Marie Curie.

Together, with her husband, who was also a scientist, Marie Curie made some amazing discoveries about radio-active materials, and she learned how to extract an element called radium! From her work, we can now produce electricity using nuclear power, and we now have many special ways to HELP people in hospitals, too. Things like X-rays can see broken bones inside injured people. Radium is also used for people with cancer and other diseases. And it was all made possible because of Marie Curie’s work. As she got older, people began to call her Madame Curie. Yes, that amazing young girl who loved learning became an amazing lady, and that lady, Madame Curie, became a very special hero.

Roberto Clemente was born near San Juan, Puerto Rico on August 18, 1934. He was the youngest of seven children, and his father worked on a sugar plantation. His mother ran a grocery store for the plantation workers. Roberto’s parents taught him to be honest, to be generous with what he had, and to always respect other people.

Growing up, Roberto was a natural athlete. He was really good at track and field events, but the game he loved most was baseball, and he worked hard at perfecting his skills. He was in high school when he signed his first professional baseball contract in Puerto Rico, and just two years after that, he signed on with the Brooklyn Dodgers. Later he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Through the years he had many successes in baseball, held several records, and became the first Latin-American to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

But the teaching he learned as a child about honesty, respect, and generosity—that’s what made Roberto a HERO. He used his talent as an athlete to earn a lot of money, but then he would use his money and his free time to help others. Once, he paid all of the hospital bills for a child that he did not even know. Another time, he bought a complete set of farming equipment for an entire town, and after a terrible earthquake in the country of Nicaragua, he paid for food and supplies for the people of that country. Roberto Clemente often said, “Anytime you have the opportunity to make things better, and you don’t, then you are wasting your time on this Earth.” Roberto Clemente was certainly a HERO!

A famous person once said, “An inventor is someone who looks upon the world and is not content with things the way they are. He wants to improve whatever he sees. He wants to help the world with his ideas!” The person who said those words was a great inventor himself, Alexander Graham Bell.

When Aleck was only 12 years old, he and his friend were given the job of de-husking wheat to be used in a mill that made flour for baking. That was a LOT of work so he and his friend invented a machine using rotating paddles and nail brushes to do the work for them. It worked! And it was used for many years, thereafter. The list of his inventions goes on and on. Of course, Alexander Graham Bell is most remembered for his invention of the telephone.

But you know, he saw the time he spent developing the telephone as an interruption to those things he really wanted to invent, and he refused to have a telephone in his study! His mother and his wife were both deaf, and that created in Aleck a great interest to study proper and effective speaking. So he spent a great deal of time studying about how sound travels. In his lifetime, he had MANY inventions that dealt with sound and communication.

Alexander Graham Bell developed a love of learning that lasted his entire life. But it was as a young child that he first started working on ways to help people and to make the world a better place. It was as a young child that he first became a HERO!

I know you’ve heard of the Legend of Johnny Appleseed — the funny man with a long white beard who wore a cooking pot on his head and went around scattering apple seeds everywhere?!

Well, did you know that Johnny Appleseed wasn’t just a story, and that he wasn’t really funny or strange? He was a real man, and his real name was John Chapman. He was born in September of 1774 in Massachusetts.

John had an older sister named Elizabeth, named after his mother. And his younger brother, Nathaniel was named after his father. John Chapman was a very religious man, and he talked about his religious beliefs with everyone he saw.

When he was still a young man, John Chapman began traveling west, not scattering appleseeds but carefully planting apple seedlings all along the way. Some trees he sold, and others he gave to the pioneer settlers because apples were such an important food for them.

At first, he got his apple seeds from cider mills in Pennsylvania, and later he grew his own apple seedlings on land he owned in Ohio and Indiana. For over fifty years, John Chapman traveled throughout the mid-west part of the United States planting thousands of apple trees and talking to people about religion. Many people called him a great missionary.

Today, even though our country has changed dramatically from those early days, most of the apple trees in the United States came from those original seedlings carefully planted by that great nurseryman named John Chapman known affectionately by everyone as Johnny Appleseed, the HERO.

Andrea Castañón was born over two hundred years ago in a very dangerous place—the Mexican desert beside the Rio Grande River. And danger always seemed to be a part of her life. But most important about her life was her constant concern and compassion for others. She cared about other people even when she was just a little girl. When fighting began between the rich land owners from Spain and the Mexican farmers like her own father, Andrea’s family moved to Texas which was then part of Mexico.

Andrea was only nine years old when she made a promise to herself to always help anyone fighting for their freedom no matter how dangerous it might be for her. As the years past, the people of Texas decided they wanted to be free from Mexico, and even though Andrea was Mexican, she loved Texas and wanted to help the Texans.

She became friends with people like Sam Houston, William Travis, Davy Crockett, and Jim Bowie who were very important names in the history of Texas. When they heard that Mexican soldiers were coming into San Antonio ready to fight, Andrea went into the Alamo with the Texans ready to help out in any way she could. It was there that Jim Bowie became very sick. She did everything she could to care for him. Then fighting broke out all around her, and she became very sad to see all the people who died at the Alamo. But that just made Andrea Castañón decide then and there to spend the rest of her life helping others. And that’s exactly what she did. She lived to be a hundred thirteen years old and she was a HERO.

Have you read a good book lately? Well, if you have, there was once a special lady who would have been happy to know it because ever since she was a little girl, reading has been very important to her! Barbara thought of the books she read as exciting adventures with handsome princes, evil queens, or wicked pirates searching for treasure. Barbara also loved riding bikes, climbing trees, jumping rope, and sledding in the winter time. She loved dogs, too. But through it all, Barbara never got tired of reading.

When she grew up, Barbara married a young man named George Herbert Walker Bush who later became the forty-first President of the United States. That made Barbara the “first lady,” and she took that opportunity to share her message with people all over the world about how important learning to read is! Later, her oldest son, George W. Bush became President!

Barbara has this advice to give boys and girls everywhere. She says, “Turn off the TV once in a while and put down your video games. Pick up a good book. You won’t be able to put it down once you get started.” She also says, “Pay attention in school when the teacher is teaching you how to spell, how to read, and how to write. If some of your classmates are having a tough time, help them and never laugh at them. And please,” she says, “don’t forget your little brothers and sisters...take the time to share a storybook with them, and you will be giving them a gift that will last all their lives—good reading habits.” Many years ago, Barbara Bush formed the Barbara Bush Foundation all for the purpose of helping others learn to read. Barbara Bush became a HERO!

Once upon a time, there was a little mermaid who wanted most of all to have legs. Once upon a time, there was an ugly duckling who grew to be a beautiful swan. And once upon a time, there was a silly emperor with strange new clothes. But do you know we have all these wonderful “Once upon a time” stories because long ago in the small country of Denmark, there was a very real, very poor, little boy named Hans Christian Andersen who loved writing and telling stories more than anything.

Hans’ family was extremely poor. He had to work hard to help earn money so he wasn’t able to attend school regularly until he was older than the other children in his school. But Hans knew he had to finish school if he ever wanted to become successful. He often had to walk to school in the snow with holes in his shoes. He was also tall and skinny, and other children teased him for being funny looking. This hurt Hans’ feelings, but stories and music made him feel better. As a young man, Hans continued his writing. He wrote poems and books, but even grownups liked his fairy tales for children the best. Hans Christian Andersen became famous for his beautiful stories that people around the world still read and love today. Hans Christian Andersen became a HERO.

Even though he had once been so poor, even though he had to work at jobs that were not much fun, and even though he was teased for being funny looking, Hans had a goal, and he followed his dreams to become what he wanted to be—a great story teller! Some people think his tale about the ugly duckling was meant to be the story of his own life. What do you think?

Laura was a young pioneer girl in the late 1800s. She was born on February 7, 1867 and was the second child of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ingalls. Life was very hard for the Ingalls family. Winters were especially harsh, and the Ingalls family had many sad times. But in spite of the hardships, Laura’s family was very close, and they loved each other very much.

When Laura grew up, she became a school teacher, and life began to be a little easier for her. Later, she moved to Missouri and went to work as a journalist for a newspaper in St. Louis. She also got married to a man named Almanzo Wilder, and she became Laura Ingalls Wilder.

Laura had always loved writing, and soon she decided to write a book. It was called little House in the Big Woods followed by several more “Little House” books. They were all about her own family when she was a child. But she didn’t just write about how hard life was. She wrote mostly about happy moments like taking a buggy ride into town, swimming in the creek, and listening to her father play his fiddle late at night.

Even though she lived a long time ago, Laura Ingalls Wilder still brings joy into the hearts of everyone who reads her books, or watches the television show called “Little House on the Prairie” which is based on her books.

Yes, Laura Ingalls Wilder, the little pioneer girl, grew up to become a HERO.

Squanto was born somewhere around the year 1580. His home was in what was later to become America, more specifically, Massachusetts. Squanto lived off of the land, learning to hunt and fish and raise crops as he grew and prepared to be a brave man with a family of his own someday.

But then something happened to change all of those wonderful plans. Squanto, along with several other young men from his tribe was kidnapped. They were taken away as prisoners on boats going all the way to Europe where they were sold as slaves. It was during his time of working as a slave in England that Squanto learned how to speak English.

Later, Squanto had the opportunity to return to his home with Captain John Smith because he could be a very HELPFUL guide and interpreter for men exploring the New World. He HELPED the explorers but finally settled in a tribe called the Wampanoags.

In 1620, the Pilgrims arrived at a place called Plymouth Rock near where Squanto was living. That first winter was horrible for the Pilgrims, and many of them died. Squanto actually went to stay with the Pilgrims and HELPED them to recover from that terrible winter. He taught them the best places to catch fish, how to build warmer houses, and he taught them how to plant and cook corn. He also HELPED them know how to get along with the Wampanoags.

That was nearly four hundred years ago, but because of the great HELP he gave the Pilgrims, Squanto is still remembered as a very special HERO.

It was in 1933 during the Great Depression that a very talented boy named Randy Sparks was born in Leavenworth, Kansas. Randy was always a hard worker. And he especially worked hard at learning to play the guitar and singing and then writing songs. The songs that he wrote were all very special. But his songs always had hope, and sometimes they had some good advice, too! He knew that he wasn’t as naturally gifted as some other musicians, so he just worked that much harder to achieve what he wanted. In 1962, Randy Sparks started a musical group called The New Christy Minstrels. His very first record album won a Grammy Award. Another record album called Land of Giants was filled with songs he wrote about many special HEROES who HELPED make America great.

Over the years, Randy Sparks has HELPED many others get into show business, too, like John Denver, Kenny Rogers, and Steve Martin. He is also known for speaking out strongly about fairness and about opportunity to achieve by those who really work hard on their talents whatever those talents may be. And he strongly fights the idea of using tobacco and drugs, because he knows so many people who have ruined their lives by smoking and by taking drugs.

Yes, Randy Sparks, has always worked hard and has always looked for opportunities to HELP those who were really willing try. And for that, he became a HERO!

It was over a hundred years ago that a young boy named Edwin lived with his family in Hendley, Nebraska. Edwin’s father, Mr. Perkins, had a General Store that sold just about everything. Edwin HELPED his dad in the store a lot, but he also HELPED his mom in the kitchen a lot. He loved experimenting with tastes and textures. Edwin was also interested in chemistry, and he had many new ideas for inventing things.

After he graduated from high school, he began creating a number of products to sell. One product he came up with was called Fruit Smack, a concentrated drink that could have more water added to it to make an inexpensive juice for the whole family. There was a problem though. Shipping the bottles of Fruit Smack cost a lot of money, and many bottles were broken. So in 1927, Edwin Perkins developed a way to remove the liquid from Fruit Smack, leaving only powder that he repackaged in envelopes with a brand new name. He called it Kool Aid! By 1929, Kool Aid was distributed to grocery stores all over the nation.

Over time, they sold billions and billions of packages and became very wealthy. But they didn’t just keep all of that money for themselves. They gave large amounts of money to a college, a hospital, a retirement village, a museum, and a theater in Hastings, Nebraska. Oh, and you might want to know...Kool Aid is the official soft drink of the state of Nebraska. And Edwin Perkins is remembered, first of all, as a hard working young boy with lots of curiosity, and then as a hard working man who became a HERO.

Randy Pausch was born on October 23rd, 1960. As a young boy, he worked very hard in school, but he also had a lot of fun! He used his imagination a lot, too! Randy would sometimes spend hours just dreaming of all the things he wanted to do in his life. Things like being in zero gravity and floating like the astronauts do, playing football with an NFL team, working for Disney, and many more. In fact, he made a list of all the things he wanted to do...and then he set out actually figuring ways to do them!

Randy Pausch went to college, where he eventually became Dr. Randy Pausch, and later he went to work as a computer science professor at a large university in Pennsylvania. It was during that time that he HELPED design some really cool virtual reality rides at Disney World! It was also during that time that he learned he had a bad disease and would not live very much longer.

Dr. Pausch had been having fun all of his life, but now what? Would he become sad and start thinking about how unfair it was that he would not live much longer? Or would he continue to do the things he had always done as long as he could? Well, he decided not only to enjoy life like he always had before but to get really busy teaching others how to have wonderful and happy lives, too! He talked with hundreds of students in college. He wrote a book called, The Last Lecture – a wonderful book that is HELPING millions and millions of people everywhere! “Have fun,” he told them. “Dream.” And six little words, he said, are the most important words you can ever live by: “Tell the truth all the time.”

Yes, that little boy who spent much of his childhood dreaming and making lists, and actually DOING those things on his lists, grew up to become a HERO.

On May 12th, 1820, Mr. and Mrs. Nightingale were in Florence, Italy when their baby daughter came into this world. So they named her Florence after the city where she was born!

Young Florence Nightingale grew up, however, in London, England. As a child, she studied several languages, including Greek, Latin, German, French, and Italian. Mr. Nightingale taught her math, too, while her governess taught her music and art.

Everyone thought that Florence would grow up to be an upper class proper lady and spend her life entertaining high society folk in London. But Florence had other ideas. She wanted to HELP sick and disabled people get well and have better lives. So she began studying nursing. Her family, and those who knew her could not understand why she would do that, because at that time, nurses were not respected very much, and hospitals were usually dirty, and poorly equipped.

Florence spent a lot of time HELPING those who were sick and hurt, but more and more she was shocked to see how hospitals were operated and how nurses were treated. She was determined to see all that change. Hospitals should be clean, very clean she thought, and nurses should be well trained and treated as professionals.

Well, over the years, Florence Nightingale did begin to see things change, and it was her determination that got it all started. Today, she is known as the founder of modern nursing, and she certainly was a HERO

More than 300 years ago, very early on a Christmas morning, a baby boy was born on a farm in England. His mother, Mrs. Newton, named him Isaac after his father who had died shortly before the baby’s birth. Isaac was a small boy and not very much HELP to his mother on their farm. It wasn’t that Isaac didn’t want to HELP his mother. He would start out to do his chores, then completely forget about them because he had so many wonderful ideas and questions filling his mind.

Isaac loved making little models of things that worked just like the big things they represented with wheels that turned and sails that moved. Once, Isaac made a model windmill that turned around and around even inside where there was no wind. He called it “mouse power,” because inside the mill Isaac had made a little treadmill and had put a tiny mouse to run on the treadmill and turn the wheel.

Well, little Isaac grew up studying and studying about science and math until he was famous for all the wonderful things he learned and taught other people about the planets, about colors, about gravity, motion, and many other things. And Isaac Newton became Sir Isaac Newton. Even our space ships that have gone to the moon and our space shuttles that travel around the earth are able to function because of the studies and experiments of this HERO of science and mathematics. So next time your teacher asks you to follow the scientific method, think about that little boy born long ago.

Reba was born in Oklahoma on March 28th, 1955. Her whole family was involved in rodeos, and Reba was a very happy child. She was one of four children in her family, and besides rodeos, they loved singing, too! Soon, Reba started singing on stages with her sister Susie and her brother Pake. In 1974, Reba was asked to sing “The Star Spangled Banner” at the National Rodeo Finals in Oklahoma City. Someone from the music business was in the audience and heard her sing!

It wasn’t long before Reba McEntire had a recording contract with a big record company. From there, it was one hit song after another. Eventually, Reba became the “Number One Best Selling Female Artist” ever! She also starred in many movies and even had her own television show called “Reba!” She became very, very successful and made a lot of money!

But you see, Reba McEntire didn’t do all that just for herself. She does a lot of work for and gives a lot of money to Children’s Medical Research; The Salvation Army; Habitat for Humanity; and many others. The Texoma Medical Center in Denison, Texas is the home for The Reba McEntire Rehabilitation Center, and Reba’s Ranch House, all designed to HELP people in great need. She has been honored many times for being an outstanding humanitarian, which is just another way to say that Reba McEntire, that little girl from the big ranch in Oklahoma grew up to become a HERO.

Delilah Rene Luke

It was on February 15th, 1960 that a little girl was born in Reedsport, Oregon. Her mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Luke, named her Delilah Rene. Delilah’s family was very involved in music, and just like them, she loved music, too. But soon, she discovered she didn’t have a talent for singing. What she could do, though, was talk! When she was in middle school, she became a news reporter for radio station KDUN in her hometown of Reedsport. Over the years, that early start in radio became a great foundation for an amazing career in broadcasting. You can hear Delilah every night from seven to midnight on hundreds of radio stations across the United States. She listens to, and plays songs for people who are celebrating in their lives, and for those who are feeling sad about something.

Delilah has eight children, five of them adopted. She knows and cares a lot about children who have been orphaned or abandoned.

In 2003, Delilah learned about a very small refugee camp in a country called Ghana on the continent of Africa where tens of thousands of men, women, and children live all crowded together. They had very little food and no fresh water. Quickly, Delilah got a group of people together and started an organization called Point Hope to HELP those people. Soon, with her hard work, determination, and persistence, water wells were drilled nearby, and food and other services started to be provided. On one of her trips to Africa, she bought some nearby land to build an orphanage. Yes, Delilah Rene Luke, the girl who became a radio broadcaster when she was in middle school, grew up to become a very special HERO.

Growing up in the 1950s with three sisters and being the only boy in the family may not have always been the easiest thing for young George Lucas to do! And something even more difficult, as a child, he wanted so badly to be a good swimmer, but he couldn’t swim, and he was embarrassed about that. As a teenager, he wanted to be a race car driver until he had a really bad crash and nearly died from his injuries.

That's when George Lucas became very interested in film making. He studied the art of film making and the business of film making, and he made several award-winning short films. Then in 1977, the world first saw what a great film maker he had become when he released his first major project—Star Wars! Later he went on to create the other five Star Wars movies, all of the Indiana Jones movies, and a LOT more! George Lucas has become very famous and very wealthy.

But it doesn’t stop there. He uses his fame and his wealth to greatly HELP young people everywhere. Realizing how dramatically the world is changing, George Lucas created an organization called Edutopia for educators, parents, and students to share the best of the best ideas in education, and the best teaching methods from all over the world. When schools and teachers and parents find educational ideas and methods that work, they can share with others—and learn from others— through Edutopia.org. And then, in 2012, he sold his film-making company and the rights to his films to Disney, for 4-BILLION dollars! And he promises to use the money to HELP further improve educational opportunities for young people!

Yes, George Lucas was that little boy who was so embarrassed about not being able to swim. But, instead of hiding behind his embarrassment, he USED it to motivate him to much greater things. He used it to become a HERO!

You probably already know that Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. Being President was a hard job, but Abe Lincoln had always worked very hard.

When he was still very small, Abe HELPED his father chop trees to build a log cabin for their family to live in. And going to school wasn’t easy either. Abe and his sister had to walk two whole miles to school and another two miles back.

Abraham loved books more than anything. He looked for every chance to read. They say when he went out to plow a field, he would take a book along with him, and at the end of each row, he would stop and read a little while the horse rested! With so much work to do during the day, though, Abe usually only had time to read at night. And since it was a long time before electric lights were even invented, he read by the glow of the coals left in their fireplace. Often he would read late into the night. And it really paid off, too, because of all the wonderful things he learned from books! One of his favorite books was about George Washington, our very first president.

I wonder if young Abe ever though he might someday grow up to President, too? Well, he not only became the President, he became a HERO!

It was over 200 years ago, that a boy named Rene Laennec was born in France. He was a good student in school, and by the age of twelve, he could not only read and speak French, he also knew Greek, Latin, German, and English.

There was a war going on in France while Rene was still very young, and when he was only 14-years-old, he began HELPING to care for wounded soldiers. By the time he was 18, he was actually serving in a military hospital as a surgeon. Rene Laennec became a famous doctor in France. He studied a lot about the human heart and lungs, as well as the diseases that can affect them.

One morning, Dr. Laennec was out taking a walk when he saw two young children playing with a long piece of solid wood. One child was scratching the end of the piece of wood while the other child held his ear to the opposite end. He could hear the scratching very loudly. That’s what inspired the doctor’s invention of the stethoscope.

After experimenting, Dr. Rene Laennec found that a hollow tube of wood HELPED him hear sounds of the heart and lungs very clearly and loudly. Although stethoscopes have changed through the years, it was Rene Laennec, the young boy from France, who grew up to absolutely revolutionize the medical field by inventing the stethoscope.

The year was 1913. The place—Brooklyn, New York. A baby boy was born named David Daniel Kaminsky. Very early in life, Danny, as they called him, wanted to be an entertainer. In fact, his first acting role was to be a watermelon seed in his kindergarten play. And a fine watermelon seed he was! By age 13, he made money by singing in the streets near his home. He later worked for a radio station and began performing comedy at camps and at hotels. By age 20, Danny Kaminsky changed his name to Danny Kaye, and started becoming very successful in show business. Everyone loved Danny Kaye!

It’s true that all of his life he made people smile with songs, dances, and funny stories, but what really made Danny Kaye a HERO had nothing to do with show business. You see, Danny was very concerned about poor children all over the world who didn’t have enough food to eat, clothes to wear, or opportunity for education. So he joined an organization sponsored by the United Nations called UNICEF. That stands for “United Nations Children’s Fund.” He believed that it was everyone’s responsibility to HELP, and along with making speeches and giving his own money, Danny flew his own airplane all over the world to take things to needy children. Once, he flew to sixty-five different cities in just five days!

In 1987, Danny Kaye was honored by the United Nations as the man who first “heightened global awareness of the plight of unfortunate children throughout the world.” Those are big words to say, simply, that Danny Kaye became a very special HERO.

Paul David Hewson was born in Ireland on May 10th, 1960. During his childhood and early teens, Paul and his brother, Norman, spent a lot of time together and had a lot of fun. Often, they would get together with friends and sing loudly in the streets of Dublin, sometimes just to see what people would say! One day Paul was singing especially loud when a friend gave him the nickname of “Bono Vox.” Paul hated that nickname until later, when he learned that “Bonavox” was a Latin phrase meaning “good voice!” Since then, Paul Hewson has been known simply as Bono.

In the 1970s, Bono became the main singer in a rock band called U2. Over the years, Bono has made hundreds of millions of dollars and he has become extremely famous. But he hasn’t used his money and his fame selfishly. He has chosen to HELP other people, mainly people in very poor countries of Africa. He is dedicated to fighting poverty, disease, and hunger. He has worked diligently with presidents and other leaders of more wealthy nations to encourage them to HELP, too.

Yes, that young boy who sang loudly through the streets of Dublin, grew up to use his talents and his caring determination to HELP millions of people—Paul Hewson became Bono—and Bono... became a HERO.

Did you ever wonder where yo-yos came from? Actually, the yo-yo has been around for thousands of years, believed first used in China and other eastern countries. Later it was introduced in Europe and in the Philippines. The word “yo-yo” in the native Philippine language simply means “come back.”

In the late 1800s, a little boy named Pedro Flores was born in the Philippines. When he was still very young, his family moved to America. When Pedro was 29-years-old, he decided he wanted to be in business for himself. He remembered playing with a yo-yo back home in the Phillippines when he was a child and thought that maybe American children would enjoy them as well. First, he made one dozen yo-yos by hand and began selling them for children in his neighborhood. In just a few months, he had machines to make yo-yos, and in just a little over a year later, his company was producing 300,000 yo-yos a day. The yo-yo frenzy spread all across the United States.

Pedro Flores never claimed he invented the yo-yo, but he was certainly the one who began making the toy popular in America. Your grandparents played with yo-yos and so will your grandchildren, thanks to a little boy named Pedro who grew up to make a fun toy for children all across America!

On September 13, 1857, a baby boy was born near a town called Derry Church, Pennsylvania. His parents named him Milton. Milton had a difficult time in school because his family moved around a lot. When he was 15-years-old, he got a job as a confectioner’s apprentice and he learned all about making candy and other sweets.

As Milton grew a little older, he wanted to start his own candy factory. But as hard as he tried, he failed over and over again. He tried to start businesses in three different cities. They all failed. Finally, after moving back to Pennsylvania, he learned how to make chocolate. That’s when the name Milton Hershey became famous! He made millions and millions of dollars with his Hershey’s Chocolate Company. The factory is located in what is now Hershey, Pennsylvania, a beautiful town with streets like West Chocolate Avenue and Cocoa Avenue. The street lights are shaped like giant Hershey’s Kisses, and the whole town smells like chocolate! Milton Hershey HELPED build that town.

But he also built something else—a very special school for underprivileged children. He opened his school in 1909, and still today, over a thousand children, pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, attend the Milton Hershey School free of charge, all paid for using money that Mr. Hershey gave to the school. Through the years, tens of thousands of children, who otherwise could not afford it, have had a wonderful and exciting education all made possible by Milton Hershey, a man we remember not only as “The King of Chocolate” but also as a very special HERO.

It was May 12th, 1968 that Frank and Nancy Hawk had a baby boy and they named him “Tony.” They all lived in San Diego, California. With warm temperatures and plenty of sunshine, playing outside was just the thing to do. When Tony was 9-years-old his brother, Steve, gave him an old used skateboard. The first time Tony stepped onto the skateboard, he yelled back at his brother, “How do I turn?!”

Well it wasn’t long before Tony not only learned how to turn, he learned a few hundred other tricks, too...including the “900” one of skateboarding’s most difficult maneuvers! Soon, Tony Hawk became known worldwide as the best competitive skateboarder—ever!

His name became very famous, and he began making a lot of money! In fact, he was able to buy his own house before he graduated from high school! Today, amusement park rides are named after him, along with video games, skateboards, clothing, and much more.

But through all that, Tony Hawk wanted to find ways to HELP others. So, in 2002 he created The Tony Hawk Foundation, which has now given more than 32-million dollars to low-income communities so they can build skate parks and provide recreational programs for young people.

Yes, that 9-year-old first time skateboarder, used his talents to not only create a great life for himself, he also works to HELP others! His extreme skateboarding talent makes Tony Hawk really cool—his working hard to HELP others makes Tony Hawk a HERO!

Do you ever wonder how a light bulb works, and do you like to listen to CDs? Do you like to go to the movies? You know, it was a man named Thomas Alva Edison who invented the record player, and perfected the light bulb and the movie projector. He also invented or perfected about a thousand other things, many of which we still use today. He was born in 1847 and was the youngest of seven children in his family. His mother was a teacher, and she always encouraged him to read. By doing so, he quickly developed a great interest in science. Thomas developed a passion for learning, and he was always asking questions.

When he was ten years old, he set up a small laboratory in the basement of the family home. When he was twelve, he worked as a train boy on the Grand Trunk Railway, and he was allowed to move his laboratory to an empty railcar.

One lesson we can learn from Thomas Edison is persistence. For example, when he was working on perfecting the incandescent light bulb, he tried and failed up to ten-thousand times before he found the right combination of materials to make it work. It was Thomas Edison who talked about failure being our friend if we learn from our failures and continue working to succeed.

Thomas Alva Edison worked hard all of his life to learn everything he could by listening, asking questions, and by reading. Then he used what he learned to HELP the world in so many wonderful ways. He became one of the greatest HEROES of all time.

Johnny was a great HELPER when he was a young boy in the early 1800s. He was one of five children in his family, and he didn’t have to be told that his mother needed a lot of HELP after his father, Mr. Deere, had been lost at sea. So every day he would do his chores around the house, and then he would HELP the nearby blacksmith so he could earn some money for his family.

Johnny loved working in the blacksmith shop, and he learned the art of blacksmithing himself.

One day he was able to build his own blacksmith shop, but then lightning struck his shop and burned it down. That did not stop him, though. He built another one. Sadly, one day it burned also, and once again, times became very hard for John. That’s when he left Vermont and went to Illinois, looking for work.

While John was working in Illinois, a farmer came to him with a problem. You see, plows at that time were made of cast iron, and they didn’t work very well in the sticky soil there. So John HELPED the man by making a plow out of polished steel. Soon, farmers everywhere around started buying the plows John made because they did the job so well!

Business got better and better for John, and it wasn’t long until his plows were the most popular anywhere! John’s name, John Deere, would one day be seen all over the world, not just on plows, but on tractors, lawn mowers, and all kinds of things that make life better for many people. Yes, because of the things he learned by being a good HELPER, even as a child, John Deere became a HERO!

Misty Danielle Copeland was born on September 10, 1982 in the state of Missouri but moved to California when she was 3. Even as a small child, Misty loved dancing. She had an older sister, Erica, who had enjoyed being part of the middle school drill team so when Misty started 6th grade, she also joined the drill team. Eventually, she became captain of the drill team.

The drill team coach was very impressed with Misty’s natural grace in her dancing even though she had never had the opportunity to take lessons. The local Boys and Girls Club had a free ballet group that met once a week and the coach encouraged Misty to join.

Once the teacher of that free class saw the natural talent and grace, she offered to teach Misty the finer points of ballet. Misty Copeland was already 13-years-old when she began studying ballet. After only 3 months of the class, Misty was en pointe–dancing on her toes. By 14, Misty had won a national ballet contest! At 15, she won recognition as the best young dancer in the Greater Los Angeles, California area.

Misty’s successes and honor in the world of ballet have continued through the years. In 2015 at 33 years of age, she became the first African American principal ballerina at a major international ballet company. She has danced on Broadway AND, she was the lead ballerina in the Disney film, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.

She has had several books written about her, but Misty Copeland has also created her own book. A book for children entitled Firebird. The purpose of her book is to encourage young people to have faith in themselves and the book shows how, through hard work and dedication, they, too, can become a Firebird.

Benjamin Solomon Carson was born on September 18th, 1951 in Detroit, Michigan. At first, life was not so bad for young Ben and his family, but when he was in the third grade, things became really difficult. His father left the family, and they became very poor. The boys had a very hard time in school because they lost nearly a whole year of learning during all the family upset. But their mother knew how important education is and that learning to read well is an absolute key to future success. She greatly limited their television watching and required them to read two library books every week and write reports on them. She taught them to listen carefully in class, to take education seriously, and to see themselves as being on a path to a successful future. Soon, their grades started to improve...a lot!

By the time Ben was in high school, his grades were good enough to get him a scholarship to Yale University! After graduating from Yale, he attended medical school. Later, he became a neurosurgeon, and eventually became the Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland.

As an older man, he retired from medicine and was appointed by the President of the United States to be the Secretary of Housing and Urban Development. So, now, Dr. Carson HELPS people in yet another special way.

But there’s more! In 1994, Dr. Carson and his wife started the Carson Scholars Fund, which awards scholarships to students in grades 4–11 for “academic excellence and humanitarian qualities.” And, remembering how his mother had HELPED him realize the importance of reading, he created reading rooms through the Ben Carson Reading Project. Today these special rooms in elementary school libraries all over the country HELP students realize that learning to enjoy reading is a powerful part of the foundation for a successful future.

Yes, young Benjamin grew up in difficult circumstances, but he made choices even as a child to become a person who would be ABLE to HELP others in BIG ways by first putting HIMSELF on a path to a very successful future!

Richard Branson was born on July 18, 1950 in Surrey, England. There was no television in the Branson home, so young Ricky, as they called him then, watched carefully as his mother would make things to sell in stores. His father would make simple tools and machines to HELP make the things Mrs. Branson would design easier to build.

Richard was only 16-years-old when he started a Student Magazine at his school, and a year later he opened what he called a Student Advisory Centre to HELP young people. He was only 20-years-old when he started what became one of the largest music companies in the world. He called it Virgin Records, and in 1992 he sold that company for 1-billion dollars! From there, he started over 200 other companies—everything from cell phones to airlines! And he created jobs for over 55 thousand people!

Does that music sound familiar? All over the world it is played by great orchestras and sung in churches in different languages. This famous melody was written nearly 200 years ago by a German man name Ludwig Van Beethoven. It’s amazing that anyone could write such wonderful music, but the most surprising thing about Beethoven is that he wrote this glorious Ninth Symphony while he was losing his hearing! When he attended the first orchestra ever to play it, he was totally deaf. He couldn’t even hear the people applauding when the music stopped. Many people think Ludwig Van Beethoven wrote the most beautiful music anyone has ever written, even after he couldn't hear anymore.

Many people believe Beethoven was a HERO. But it certainly was not easy for Ludwig to grow up and become a HERO. Ludwig’s father was his very first music teacher, but his father was very mean. Many times he would come home late at night and drag his young son out of the bed to play the piano in the middle of the night. Sometimes, if Ludwig made a mistake, his father would beat him. When the boy began making up his own music, his father would call it “silly trash.”

Because of how his father treated him and his mother, Ludwig often felt sad and afraid. He began relying on himself to learn all that he could, and even when his ears would not let him hear anymore, he continued writing wonderful music.

Mr. and Mrs. Ballard were always HELPING and encouraging their son, Robert. He wanted to be an underwater explorer when he grew up, and to his surprise, when he told his mom and dad, they didn’t laugh! Instead, they said, “Maybe you need to become an oceanographer.” They actually encouraged him to live his dream.

Well, young Robert did start living his dream. In school, he studied hard in all his subjects, especially science. He learned all he could about undersea life, and sunken ships, and underwater land formations.

When Robert grew up, he became an officer in the Navy, and after that, he became an explorer. In 1985, Robert Ballard and his HELPERS designed a special submarine that would take a crew over 12-thousand feet below the surface of the ocean. That’s over 2-miles straight down! With that special submarine, he was able to find the most famous shipwreck of the twentieth century – the R.M.S. Titanic. He has also made many other discoveries.

But Dr. Ballard is more than an explorer. He is a teacher, and he has created a program for fourth graders all the way through 9th graders to learn about the science of ocean exploration. He also spends a lot of time visiting students in schools all over America and teaching them to live their dreams just as he has done.

Robert Ballard has not only lived his dream... in the process, he has become a HERO!

Little Susan was born in February of 1820. Susan grew up learning about self-discipline and strong convictions and courage to do things that she knew ought to be done. She was only three years old when she learned to read and write!

Later, Mr. Anthony sent Susan to a boarding school near Philadelphia. Soon, she became a teacher at a boarding school. That’s when she discovered that men who did the same job as she was doing got paid a lot more than women. She knew that could not be right. And only men could vote. “That certainly was not right, either,” she thought. Women should have the same rights as men! So, Susan did something about it—she VOTED!! That took a lot of courage, too! No woman in America had ever done that before!

Well, at first she got into a lot of trouble for doing that, but later people began to realize she was right—women should indeed be able to vote just like men. And women should be paid the same as men for doing the same job. That’s what became known as “equal rights.”

Her efforts to bring about fairness took a long time to really catch on, but she is the one who started people seriously thinking about “equal rights for women.” You see, she had the courage to stand up and tell people what they were doing was wrong! Today, you can see her picture on the silver one-dollar coin as a way to honor her because Susan B. Anthony certainly was a HERO.

Troy was the youngest of three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Aikman in West Covina, California on November 21, 1966. As a young boy, he was very athletic, and he participated in sports a lot. He had big plans as an athlete!

By the time he was in high school, he made All State in both football and baseball! When he went to college, Troy Aikman played football for the University of Oklahoma. And then in 1989, he became quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. After leading his team to many victories, including winning three Super Bowls, Troy Aikman was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame and considered one of the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time.

Today, Troy Aikman says there is nothing more important than the health and well being of children. In 1992, he started the Troy Aikman Foundation. In several children's hospitals, he has provided some really cool high-tech interactive playrooms. There is even an online computer to let children talk to other children in other hospitals. They can even see each other by video communication. Troy Aikman has also written some books, including a children’s book called Things Change. He uses the money from his books to HELP children.

Yes, Troy Aikman became a football HERO by HELPING his team to many victories, but today he has become an even bigger HERO by HELPING thousands of children in so many different ways.
