Rex was a good student in school—not the outstanding student he could have been, but a good student. He was picked on a lot, and didn’t have many friends—no best friends. Sometimes he was even afraid to go to school, and that certainly was not good for his grades. He was very close to his family but not really close to anybody else.

Rex liked organizing things and collecting things, but he really didn’t know anybody else who had those same interests. He was not very good at football, basketball, baseball, track, or any other sports, although he would have put more effort into them if he had not been laughed at so much when he tried. He never understood why sports was the most important thing in life for so many people. So, he learned how to just keep to himself and work on the things he was good at.

He finally learned that he was his own best friend, and that he was going to become all he could be regardless of what the others thought. His grades began to skyrocket! He finished high school at the top of his class, went to college, still at the top of his class, and eventually earned five degrees!

Today, he is vice president of a large worldwide company and he has many people working for him—people who enjoy working for him, because he treats them the way he wishes he had been treated in school.

He could have chosen to hurt others the way he was hurt. But instead, he chose to become a HERO, not only to those around him, but also to himself!

Larry was everybody’s friend. He made good grades, and he was always very HELPFUL. The other students thought he told the funniest stories, and he was a good listener, too if anyone had a problem. But most of the time, none of them paid any attention to Larry’s limp. They had grown up with him and knew that his leg had been injured in a car accident before they even started to school. Of course, Larry couldn’t run very fast or play ball very well, but he wrote great stories and played the piano better than anybody else in the school.

One day a new boy moved into the neighborhood and started attending Larry’s school. On his very first day, he tried to impress everybody by bragging about all the things he could do better than anybody else. Then he stopped and pointed down the hall and said in a loud voice, “Hey, who’s that dude that can’t walk?”

Then the boy started copying the way Larry limped. The new boy was laughing and thought his new friends would laugh with him, but instead everyone was very quiet. Larry came closer and with a big smile he said, “Hi, I’m Larry. You must be the new guy I heard about.”

Suddenly, the boy felt very ashamed of himself. He realized that he had just been totally insensitive. “Hey, it’s nice to meet you,” he said, barely able to look Larry in the eye. He knew Larry must have seen the way he was acting, but Larry was friendly to him anyway.

The boy knew the difference in HELPING and hurting, and he certainly knew Larry was the HERO type. He felt so bad about what he had done that right then and there, he decided to stop bragging about himself and start being a little more like Larry instead.

Danny’s best friend was Marcos. Marcos and his family had come from Mexico and moved in down the street from Danny’s family a few months ago. Marcos and his dad knew quite a bit of English, but his mom and his little sister spoke only Spanish. Marcos was the best soccer player Danny had ever known, and the boys played during recess and at home after school.

One morning when Danny walked into the classroom, he noticed that a boy in the back was holding a piece of paper and trying to read it. Several boys were laughing at Marcos. It didn’t take Danny long to figure out that Marcos had brought a note for the teacher from his mother. The school had plenty of Spanish speaking teachers so there would be no problem knowing what the note said. But when Marcos took the note out of his backpack and laid it on his desk, this boy who was known as a trouble-maker grabbed the note and passed it around. The boys were all taking turns trying to read the note and laughing at how funny they thought the words sounded.

Marcos was just sitting there feeling embarrassed while the boys made fun of him and his family. That’s when Danny grabbed the note from one of the guys. “Why do you have to act like jerks?” he asked them angrily. One boy said, “Well, why can’t his momma write a note somebody could read?” And then they all laughed some more. Danny handed the note back to Marcos and looked the other boys right in the eye. “Somebody smart enough to know two languages could read it. Somebody like Marcos. Now, leave him alone.”

Marcos felt a lot better, and Danny became a HERO.

Every year, Mrs. Winifred has two basic groups of students in her class. The achievers, and the non-achievers. The strange thing about it is that the achievers are not necessarily smarter than the non-achievers. All of her students are fairly intelligent. As a rule, the achievers just work harder and take school more seriously than the non-achievers.

Last week, however, it was a couple of non-achievers who began to tease and make fun of a couple of students who were studying together for an upcoming test. They started calling them “Bookworms” which they soon shortened to just “Worms.”

That’s when Mrs. Winifred got involved. She said, “You know, you are just as smart as they are—you just make different choices. And isn’t it going to be interesting when they turn out to be doctors, or teachers, or civic leaders, or bankers, or airline executives, or successful business owners or whatever the case may be—and the two of you are still looking for a job you can hold down for a while? Will you be picking on them then? Or will you choose to join them now and become HEROES to your future selves and your future families, too?

Well, you know, it didn’t take long at all for those two to get the point. They not only stopped hurting the other students, they apologized and actually became a part of their study group!

When it was time for the new school year to start, Ellie hardly knew anyone in her class. On the very first day, Ellie could tell she had gotten in a classroom with some kids who didn’t seem to care about the school rules. They talked when Mrs. Parsons was trying to talk. They wouldn’t behave in the line on the way to the cafeteria, and even in the afternoon when it was time to go home, they were noisy and began hitting each other with their backpacks.

Ellie’s mom came to the room after school to meet with the new teacher. Mrs. Parsons said, “I would love to have a whole class of Ellies.” Of course, that made Ellie and her mother feel good, but one of the other kids overheard Mrs. Parsons say that, and she couldn’t wait to tell the other kids that Ellie was the “teacher’s pet.” As the weeks passed, the class did not seem to get any better. Instead of trying to mind the school rules, they just got mad when they got into trouble for breaking the rules.

One day when the teacher told a girl she was going to have to miss part of her recess because she had been talking so much, the girl blurted out, “Why doesn’t Ellie ever have to miss recess?” Mrs. Parsons looked at the girl and said, “This has nothing to do with Ellie. You have the same opportunity to make right choices that Ellie has. Don’t say mean things about other people when you are not doing what you should. Instead be a HERO to yourself and the rest of the class by following the rules so you and others can be successful.”

The girl had never thought of it just that way before, and she decided right then to start using Ellie’s example instead of criticizing her. She was deciding to start becoming a HERO instead.

Toward the end of every school year, after all the testing is done, Mr. Delaney likes having discussions with his class. And of course, one of his favorite subjects is that of HELPING others instead of hurting them. “Why should we all be HELPERS,” he asked his class. One girl said, “It makes the world a better place.”

Another student said, “It makes life easier for someone having a hard time.” Someone else said, “It makes everybody friendlier.”

But there was a new kid in the class who had just moved from another city. He spent a lot of his time picking on other kids. He said, “Life is not always JUST about HELPING, you know.”

“Really” said Mr. Delaney, “Then what is it all about?” The boy thought—for longer than just a moment and finally said proudly, “It’s about having fun!” Mr. Delaney started to comment, but then a boy named Bryan, raised his hand. “I think I can handle this one,” he said, and Mr. Delaney nodded. Bryan said, “But just as soon as the fun is gone, all you have left is the memory of having fun, and if your fun was causing someone else to be hurt, what good does that do? When you HELP other people, though, then the person HELPING creates a good memory and provides a good memory for the person being HELPED. It really is all about HELPING.”

Then Mr. Delaney added, “And you can certainly have fun while you’re HELPING, too, making a good memory for everyone.” The boy hadn’t really thought about it like that before, but he was beginning to see that choosing to HELP others was a lot better than choosing to hurt them. He was pretty much deciding right then to start becoming a HERO instead.

Rocky had a lot of curiosity. He wondered about everything, and he always had. Sometimes he even took toys apart so he could figure out how to put them back together. Rocky loved going to the library, too. He looked for books about airplanes, animals, electricity, the ocean, rocks, and fossils. He also asked a lot of questions in class.

Well, some of the other kids just got tired of it. It didn’t matter to them how a telephone worked, as long as it did so they could call their friends. They didn’t want to hear any more about mice or tornadoes or how money is printed. Somebody thought it would be funny to start teasing Rocky and call him Doctor Rocky. That spread around, and Rocky finally got the message. Of course, his feelings were hurt. He wanted to have friends, and he couldn’t imagine why they weren’t as interested and curious as he was.

Rocky had a very nice teacher named Mrs. Herrington. She began to notice what was going on and how it was making Rocky sad and even quiet in class. She talked to her class once again about how to become HEROES by HELPING others, instead of hurting them. “Hurting others never comes to any good,” she said. “Some of you are doing that very thing to Rocky.” Rocky loves to learn how things work and why things happen. He may very well become a famous HERO someday by inventing or discovering something wonderful and new. He may become like Alexander Graham Bell or Benjamin Franklin. Don’t ever stop asking questions, Rocky. That is the only way we can find answers.”

Well, the others told Rocky they were sorry for what they had said, and they told Mrs. Herrington they wanted to become HEROES like Rocky.

Anthony was sitting quietly at his desk just like he did any other day. And just like any other day, the boy who sits behind him got up to turn in a paper, or sharpen a pencil, or whatever, and as he passed Anthony, he thumped him on the head. Everyday! But today was different. Today, was much harder. Today it really hurt, and Anthony yelled out, surprising the rest of the class, Mrs. Wilson, the teacher, and himself!

“What was that all about,” asked Mrs. Wilson? Anthony was afraid to say, but finally, he told her the boy had thumped him on the head, and this time it really hurt. “This time?” she said. The boy who was doing the thumping was starting to get really scared as she turned to him and said, “To the office, young man!” And off he went.

At this point, Mrs. Wilson was more concerned about Anthony, who had obviously been afraid to speak up before now. He really didn’t mean to speak up this time! But he began telling the teacher how it had been happening all year long. “Anthony,” she said, “don’t ever let someone continue to bother you without telling an adult. You have done nothing wrong. This is not your fault. I am just sad to see that you thought you had to endure it for so long.”

Anthony thanked Mrs. Wilson, and he did take her advice. Not only did he not let others continue to hurt him without telling someone, he started coming to the rescue of others who were being hurt. And, he started teaching others to HELP as well. In only a short time, that kind of bad behavior at his school completely stopped, and Anthony began to be recognized by everyone as a HERO.

It was a sad day around the Robinson house. Their family pet had just died, and Jenny had been crying for hours. When the doorbell rang, she was near the door, so she went to see who was there. It was an older boy from the neighborhood who was friends with Jenny’s brother, Michael. He said, “Is Michael here?”

Jenny said, “I’ll get him for you.” Then before Jenny could turn to go get Michael, the boy said, “Whatcha cryin’ about?”

She said, “Buster died.” That’s when the boy said, “That ol’ dog?! I could maybe see cryin’ if it was a puppy or somethin’, but that dog was so old, he could hardly walk!” Jenny’s crying became uncontrollable as she ran to her room. Her brother, Michael, had been on his way to the door, and he had heard the whole thing.

“What are you,” Michael said to his friend, “some kind of insensitive jerk or something?!” The boy said, “What?” Michael said, “Don’t you realize that my parents got Buster when I was a baby, and that he was older than Jenny? She’s never known life without him, and now he’s gone. I can’t believe you wouldn’t be upset, too, if it happened to you!”

Well, the boy thought for a minute, and realized Michael was right. He had a bad habit of putting other people down, especially when he saw they were having a weak moment— something, indeed, he had become known for. The boy apologized to Michael, and asked if he could see Jenny. Michael said, “Now is probably not a good time, later.” Well, later, he did apologize to Jenny and even brought her some flowers to put on Buster’s grave in the back yard. He had already decided to start HELPING others instead of hurting them.

Carla and her mother loved reading. Once a week, she and her mom would take home an armful of books to read. She was able to read chapter books while she was still in the first grade, and she loved reading about famous HEROES. Some of the people she read about had HELPED fight wars to win freedom for their country. Some had studied medicine and discovered cures for terrible diseases. Some had been famous teachers or inventors. Others, writers or entertainers. Carla thought of them as HEROES because they had HELPED other people and made a big difference in the world.

There were some other students in Carla’s class who only read what they had to, and they made fun of Carla for reading so much. One day when she had finished her math test, Carla reached into her desk for her library book and it was gone! Carla was really worried. Then she heard some giggling going on and saw that some girls had thought it would be funny to scare Carla by making her think she had lost her book.

Well, Carla got the book back, and the girls had to miss recess for playing such a mean trick. Mrs. Lane, their teacher told them: “You need to read about some of those HEROES Carla reads about so you can learn how to be HEROES, too.”

Carla offered to tell the girls which were her favorite HERO stories so they could read them. Finally, the girls agreed, and Carla was happy to have new friends who wanted to read. She hoped they would decide to become HEROES just like the real-life people in the books.

A long time ago when Sarah’s grandparents got married, they bought a farm, and that’s where Sarah’s dad was raised. He learned all about farming as he was growing up, then he went to college so he could learn even more about farming. Sarah was born on that same farm, and she loved it.

She had three close friends who lived in town. One girl’s dad was a doctor; another was a lawyer, and the third owned a big store. One Friday night, the friend whose father was a doctor invited the girls for a sleep-over. In the middle of dinner, her dad got a phone call telling him to come to the hospital right away. The girls were disappointed because he had planned to take them bowling later. One of the other girls said, “I’m glad my dad doesn’t have to get up from dinner to go to work.”

“That was a mean thing to say,” the doctor’s daughter said, “At least, he’s not just a farmer.”

Well, Sarah was caught totally off guard. “What’s wrong with being a farmer?” she asked.

Then before any more hurtful things could be said, the mother at the table spoke up.

“Girls, stop this right now,” she said. “Before you start pushing each other around about whose father has the best job, let’s just discuss this. We certainly need doctors and lawyers and storekeepers,” she said. “We also need a lot of other jobs—teachers, utility workers, sanitation workers, and the list just goes on and on. But a world without farmers? Our food comes from farms, and we have to eat to live. The truth is that everyone who does a community job and does it well is a HERO to all of us.” The girls looked at each other. That night they learned a little more about being HEROES.

One day, when Melody’s answer was not even close to being correct, Amanda raised her hand, and smugly gave the answer Mrs. Williams was looking for. Then she turned around and laughed at Melody. Well, that was like a declaration of war to Melody. She began calling Amanda names and playing tricks on Amanda to embarrass her. And Amanda did the same thing. Both girls could hardly wait to get to school every day and figure out what mean things they could do to each other!

Finally, Mrs. Williams said, “After school today—both of you.” And, after school that day, Mrs. Williams talked with them. She said, “Girls, as your teacher, I know that you are just about equally intelligent. Amanda, you have excellent study skills. But,” Mrs. Williams continued, “you need better social skills. Melody, you have excellent social skills, and you need better study skills. So, here’s what we’re going to do. I’ve already talked with your parents, and you’re going to stay after school for thirty minutes every day and teach each other! Amanda, you will teach Melody how to study. Melody, you will teach Amanda how to make friends.” And that’s when the most amazing thing began to happen! At first, the girls hated the idea of having to spend time together. But then, they did begin to teach each other. Yes, those two girls, who were so intent on hurting each other, began to genuinely look forward to HELPING each other. Those two girls who started out as each other’s worst nightmare became each other’s HERO, and they also became each other’s best friend.

Lauren was a new student at Cayman Elementary School, and she was having a hard time making friends. One day, Lauren was the last person to get on the bus, and while there were several seats left, there were none for her. As she walked the aisle, she would ask if a seat were taken, and a girl on the seat would slide over toward the aisle, and say, “Yes, this seat is taken.” Lauren tried four more seats, all with the same results!

Finally, when she was only three rows from the absolute back of the bus, a boy moved over, not toward the aisle but toward the window. He said, “Come on, you can sit here.” Lauren couldn’t believe it—a boy named Carlos—the most popular guy in the school.

She said, “Thanks, but aren’t you afraid you’ll lose friends by letting me sit by you?” He said, “I like having friends as much as anybody else, but if having friends means I have to treat people like they treated you, well, I guess I can do without them!”

He went on to say, “I think my sister is in the same grade as you are. Here’s her number. Why don’t you give her a call? You guys would get along great.”

Well, Lauren did call his sister, and eventually, they became good friends, but that particular day, Lauren saw clearly the difference between those girls who hurt her, and Carlos who was quite the HERO!

Anna had several friends. She spent a lot of time with them at school and at her home or at their homes. But something began to change as she and her friends grew a little older. Her friends’ parents started taking them places and leaving them by themselves—places like the movies and the mall.

When they were all talking about going to see a movie and meeting up with some boys there, Anna said, “I think we have other plans for this Friday night, and besides, I don’t think my parents would let me go.” The other girls just rolled their eyes at Anna, and one of them said, “Oh, grow up!”

“Yeah, grow up,” the others repeated. Anna was hurt because her friends were being hateful to her. On Monday at school, the whole group of girls (who now thought they were all grown up) wouldn’t even speak to Anna. After school, Anna went home by herself and sat on her bed crying. At the same time, the other girls were sitting in one of the friends kitchens eating a snack and saying cruel things about Anna.

When that girl’s mom walked in and heard what they were saying, she said, “You know, some of us thought you were old enough to go to the movies by yourself, but the way you are acting right now pretty much proves that you are not. Why don’t you see if you can try being HEROES instead by HELPING Anna have a happy afternoon. Here take these cookies with you and offer her some.” Well, by now the girls were feeling pretty bad. “We’re sorry, mom” said the lady’s daughter. And she really meant it.

The other girls agreed that their thinking had been selfish and immature. They promised not to treat anyone that way again. Then they said, “We’re gone, and hey, thanks for the HERO cookies!”

Christopher’s backpack was getting ragged, and his mom knew it. But even though she had two jobs, there was still never any money left over for new stuff. Then one day she came home from work and said she had gotten a raise in pay. Finally, Christopher and his sister could have new backpacks. Even though he had never complained about his old backpack, Christopher was so happy about getting a new one!

But then when he got to school with it, the kid who had teased him all year about his old ragged backpack had just come in with mud on his feet. When he saw Christopher’s new backpack, he put his dirty foot on top of it and rubbed mud on it as hard as he could. Just then, the teacher walked in. “Stop right there, young man,” Mrs. Raley said to the boy. “Why would you mess up Christopher’s brand new backpack when you’ve been teasing him all year about his old one?!” The boy just looked at the floor.

“I know why,” said Mrs. Raley. “You have a need to think that you’re better than somebody else. And since your backpack was newer and nicer than Christopher’s, you thought that made you better than him. Now that he has a new backpack, you feel threatened like suddenly he’s better that you.” The boy kind of nodded even though he was still looking at the floor.

“Can you see how ridiculous that is?” she asked. “Nobody is better than anybody and even if they were, it certainly wouldn’t be because of a backpack! You need to remember that HEROES HELP other people with kind actions and kind words.” Well, you know, the boy really did begin to understand. He decided that very day to start HELPING others instead of hurting them, and he started by HELPING Christopher clean the mud off of his new backpack.

Brice was home schooled by his mother until he was in the fourth grade. That’s when his family moved, and he started going to a new school in a new town with kids from his new neighborhood. So, it was in the fourth grade that he began learning a lot of things he didn’t know before—things about himself. He learned that he was fat. Nobody had told him that before. He learned that he was poor, and not very smart. He learned all those things from his new classmates! Everyday, some of the kids in the school would make fun of him and tell him things to make him feel bad about himself. To make matters worse, he began believing what they said. His grades started going down, too.

He was embarrassed and a little afraid to tell anyone, so he spent most of the fourth grade just staying to himself. Finally, near the end of the year, Mrs. Wallace, the counselor, called him in to talk. She had noticed what had been going on, and she told him to never be afraid to come talk with her. Well, that HELPED, but it took several more visits talking with her and it took a long time for him to start believing in himself again.

Brice is in the sixth grade now, and he is an honor student. He not only started believing in himself again, but he is now working with Mrs. Wallace to HELP encourage other students who are being picked on. AND he HELPS her with the younger kids who have picked up the habit of hurting others with their words and actions to teach them how it is so much better to HELP other people than to hurt them. He and Mrs. Wallace are teaching them how to become HEROES, and in the process Brice has become a HERO himself!

It would be two more years before Linda’s oldest brother would be home from prison. He was caught stealing money to buy drugs, and everybody knew it. One day in the library, Linda heard some giggling going on behind her, so she turned around to see several girls. “What are you looking at?” one of the girls asked.

“I thought I heard you call my name,” Linda answered.

“Well, we were talking about you, not to you,” another one said. “You and your jailbird brother.” The girls all giggled again, and Linda felt very sad. Well, Mrs. Holt, the librarian, had been sitting in the floor putting some new books on a low shelf. When Linda left the library, she stood up and surprised the girls. “Why would you be so mean to Linda? I heard every word you said.” One of the girls quickly spoke up and said, “I didn’t say anything.”

But Mrs. Holt assured her that she was just as much a part of hurting Linda as the rest of them. She had laughed along with them and certainly had done nothing to stop the hurtful conversation. Mrs. Holt went on to say, “Why don’t you start talking to Linda more—in a kind way, that is? Linda is not responsible in any way for the bad choices her brother made. So stop hurting her and become her HEROES by making school a better place for her.”

Two of the girls thought about what Mrs. Holt said. They apologized and told Linda they would try to convince the other girls to start HELPING other people with their words and actions instead of hurting them. And you know, that is exactly what they did.

Jenny and her father were on their way home from school one afternoon when they saw an older lady with ragged clothes and stringy hair pushing a grocery cart down the sidewalk. The lady had a lot of stuff in her cart, but it looked old and ragged, too, and she looked hungry. Just then, two boys went up to her laughing and making fun of her. Then they started pulling things out of her cart and throwing them on the ground. The more they threw, the more frantic she became, and the more they laughed.

Jenny’s father rushed over yelling at the two boys, and immediately their arrogance became fear. They weren’t nearly as tough as they pretended. Well, the boys ran off, but not very far, because Jenny’s father had called the police on his cell phone before he got out of the car.

He HELPED the lady put all the things back in her cart. But he went further to HELP the lady get to a shelter where volunteers could HELP her have a place to sleep and food to eat until she could get her life together. Jenny was there the whole time and became more and more amazed watching her father—a real HERO in action!

Jenny had learned a lot that day. She saw, first hand, the difference between people who hurt others and people who HELP others. And when they were finally on their way home again, Jenny asked her dad if they could become volunteers at the shelter, too, and you know, that’s exactly what they did.

Will and Charlie had been friends since before they could remember. In fact, it seemed like they had spent most of their lives together! Of course, they had other friends, too. As they got older, all the guys began developing their own special interests and talents. Some were more interested in sports; some were really into computers, and others spent a lot of time playing music, but they were all still friends.

Will was very good at music and he hoped to be a professional musician when he grew up. Charlie thought that was cool and liked to listen to Will play and talk about his plans. But the older they got, the more Will noticed that Charlie didn’t seem to have any particular interests. Charlie did work hard and made good grades, but he just liked staying at home with his family, and of course, he liked to be at Will’s house. Will also began to notice that the other guys were beginning to just ignore Charlie. One day, a boy even asked Will, “Why do you hang out with that Charlie guy? He’s such a nothing.”

That made Will really angry. He said, “Look, he’s my best friend. He’s cool and I like hanging out with him.” The other boy laughed. “He’s anything but cool, and you’re not cool either if you’re his friend.” Will knew there was no sense in continuing the conversation so he just turned and walked home. He was glad to find his mom in the kitchen, and he told her what the boy had said.

“Oh, Will, I’m so sorry” she said, “but that boy has just chosen to be a hurtful person. And hurtful people have been around forever. But you know what? I’m very proud of you because you stand up for Charlie, and you continue to be his friend. You,” said his mother, “have become Charlie’s HERO.”

Mr. Delaney, who was just plain famous for his storytelling, often liked talking about his father, Henry Delaney. “It was my father,” said Mr. Delaney, “who first taught me about people who HELP and people who hurt.”

Mr. Delaney said that when young Henry was in school, it was pretty common for boys to play tricks on girls. “Back then,” he said, “they didn’t have ball point pens and markers. They had fountain pens that had to be dipped in ink after writing every few words. So every student’s desk had a jar of black ink built into the desk.” Mr. Delaney went on to explain that when a girl was sitting in front of a boy, the boy often thought it was funny to dip the end of the girl’s hair in the ink. A lot of girls had ink stains at the ends of their long hair. The girls would be furious, and the boys would laugh even more.

Not Henry, though. He could see those boys just had hurtful attitudes, somehow thinking (in a very shallow minded way) that it was funny, and he would stop them every time he could. He was nice to the girls, and they all liked him very much. They considered him to be their HERO. “In fact, when they got a little older,” said Mr. Delaney, “one of those same girls married him, and she became my mother!

“‘HEROES HELP others,’ my dad would always tell me. ‘HEROES are winners,’ he would say. And then he would look at my mother and say, ‘I’m a winner!’” Yes, Mr. Delaney learned from a very early age just how much HEROES indeed are winners!

Jimmy was always smiling. He was everybody’s friend and a good student in school. But there was one little problem. Jimmy liked being the class clown. Whatever the teacher had to say, he always had some funny comment to make. He was never disrespectful. He just cracked jokes and made funny faces. He could also sit with a perfectly straight face and wiggle his ears! That cracked everybody up. They just couldn’t HELP liking Jimmy and laughing at his silly tricks.

Well, a new school year had begun, and Mrs. Mixon had already realized that Jimmy was going to be her class clown this year. One day she asked Jimmy to stay and HELP her with some things while the rest of the class went to music. Of course, he was happy to HELP.

When the others had gone, she said, “Jimmy, I really do need your HELP. I don’t think you would ever intentionally be hurtful, but that is kind of what you are doing in my class.” He didn’t know what to say.

The teacher began to explain, “Jimmy, when you are busy doing funny things that make others in the class look at you instead of paying attention to the lesson, you are actually hurting them.”

“I never thought of it like that,” Jimmy said sadly. “You have a great personality,” said Mrs. Mixon, “and a real talent for making others laugh, and that is wonderful, but you need to learn to use it in the right way at the right time. If you do that, then you’ll actually be a HERO because you will make other people happier (at more appropriate times, of course) and let them have a better chance at learning, too.” Jimmy agreed, and that’s exactly what he did.

Darius was sitting quietly at his desk, working on the math sheet that Mrs. Simpson had assigned to her class. It was a cold day, and even the classroom was not as warm as it usually was, so Darius was wearing his leather jacket. The boy behind Darius thought it would be funny to write something very unkind on the back of Darius’ jacket. Very carefully, he began sneaking one part of a letter at a time, so Darius wouldn’t feel what he was doing. The boy had a friend who sat at the desk beside him, and they both quietly snickered.

Well, a boy named Robbie who sat all the way in the back of the room and over to the side saw what was going on, but he didn’t laugh at all. Instead he quietly raised his hand to get Mrs. Simpson’s attention and gestured toward the boy behind Darius. Mrs. Simpson caught him red-handed. The boy with the marker was sent directly to the office, and Mrs. Simpson told Darius how sorry she was that had happened. His coat was ruined. She wrote a note for him to take home saying that she saw what had happened.

Well, Darius’ dad called the other boy’s parents who did not think their son was being very funny either. They bought Darius a brand new jacket, and then made their son work—a lot—to pay for it. He was also grounded for a very long time. Now, he didn’t think it was funny anymore, either.

Just think. If he had made up his mind to be the kind of person who HELPS others instead of one who hurts others, he would have saved himself quite a lot of trouble. And he still could, if he just would.

Then one morning, Mrs. Newton was returning to her desk after passing out the math test from the day before. She had just turned around and faced the class again when she saw the girl hit Maria in the back! Maria had made an A on the test, and her friend had made a B.

“Girls, what’s the problem here?” Mrs. Newton asked. “I can’t believe I just saw you hit Maria! What would make you do such a thing?” She continued talking as she walked over to the girl. “I know that you know that HEROES are HELPFUL, not hurtful, but you’ve chosen instead to be hurtful to your friend. Well, the girl suddenly realized if she just concentrated on doing her own personal best, she wouldn’t need to compare herself with Maria. She decided that very minute, and from that time forward, to become a HERO instead.

Every Monday, Mr. Delaney started his class with a discussion period to let his students have an opportunity to say what’s on their minds. Last Monday, Jennifer raised her hand. When Mr. Delaney respectfully called on her, she said she was sad and a little scared for one of her friends who was being bullied on the computer. Somebody (and nobody knew who it was) had posted some horrible things about her friend—things that were totally untrue. And other kids were adding bad comments to it. Then Jennifer said, “What can I do to HELP my friend?”

Mr. Delaney thanked Jennifer for her comments and her question. He thanked her for caring about her friend. But he obviously looked sad and even a little angry as he said, “Computers are wonderful tools. It is so unfortunate that there are people who abuse computers and abuse the internet. Jennifer, you need to tell your friend not to respond at all to whoever is posting those messages. Instead, she needs to report what is happening first of all to her parents, and then she needs to tell her teacher, counselor, or principal, and the school security officer.

Cyber-bullies think they can’t be caught, but that’s simply not true. They CAN be caught, and ARE caught every day. When they are caught, the punishment is severe, because what they are doing is called “Slander” and “Libel.” Slander and libel are against the law, as are certain threats. And class, you know I am here to HELP you, but if I ever learn of your participation in cyber-bullying, I WILL turn you in to the authorities.” But Mr. Delaney didn’t leave it there, he went on to say, “It is HEROES, not bullies, who make the world a better place. Now is the time,” he said, “for you to make your choice, and the choice is really an easy one. It’s simply a matter of choosing to HELP others—instead of choosing to hurt.” And the class enthusiastically agreed with him!

It was a new year and a new school for Sam, and it looked like it might be a pretty good year. But after a couple of weeks, the tormenters came out. Rather than seeing how friendly Sam was and how smart he was; rather than recognizing some of the amazing talents he had, they only noticed that he was overweight, and they started teasing him about that.

Then one day, when he had an armful of books, they tripped him in the hallway. Another day, at lunch time, they spit pizza in his face and all over his shirt. Yet another time, they turned out the lights in the boys’ bathroom, and one of them hit him really hard. Sam never saw which one did it. Hurting and bleeding, he made his way to the school nurse.

Then the principal saw him. “Who did this,” she asked? Sam didn’t know—just one of the four boys who had been giving him a hard time for weeks now. Reluctantly, he gave her their names.

Well, Mrs. Morris, the principal called in the one she knew would be the leader. She knew that every group like that has one leader, and the rest are merely mindless followers. She talked with him—a lot. She talked about HEROES HELPING, not hurting, and she explained how being a HERO would also HELP him to have a wonderful future.

Mrs. Morris knew the boy was smart enough to be a leader, but time would tell if he was smart enough to become a leader of HEROES or just continue on the path that he has chosen to this point in his life. It took a few days, but eventually it became clear that he HAD chosen to lead HEROES, and he first started by HELPING others instead of hurting them. He even told Sam he was sorry and began reaching out to be his friend.

When the doorbell rang, Armando was glad to see it was his friend from down the street. The boys were also in the same class at school, and often they went to each other’s houses. Armando and his sister, Gabriella, were in the middle of practicing their music when his friend showed up, so he invited his friend inside, but asked if he could just wait a few minutes while they finished practicing.

Armando played the cello, and Gabriella played the piano. They were working on a piece of music to play in a recital in a few weeks. But as they played, Armando’s friend started laughing. “What’s so funny,” asked Gabriella? The boy said, “What’s so funny!? If you could hear yourselves like I’m hearing you, you’d laugh, too!” Well, yes, it’s true that Armando and Gabriella were not professional musicians, YET, but they were working at it, and they were actually pretty good for the short time they had been playing their instruments.

Gabriella ran out of the room crying. Then Armando said to his friend, “Why did you do that?” And he went on to say, “Maybe if you tried to learn something new once in a while, you wouldn’t laugh at other people when they are trying. Maybe you would encourage them instead of putting them down.”

Well, the boy didn’t know what to say, so he just left. On his was home, he realized Armando was right. He never tried to learn anything new because he was afraid he might embarrass himself. And he began to realize that if he started working to make himself a better person, then he could encourage others as they tried to make themselves better. He realized that he had been a DIScourager, instead of an encourager, but today all that changes.

On Monday, Betsy had some brand new clothes to wear to school, and she was feeling pretty good about herself. Like every day, she headed down the hallway to the auditorium where everyone was meeting. Then it happened. Some tall boy looked at her and said, “You’re uuuugly.” Betsy kept walking, but her whole attitude had just been ruined by a boy she had never seen before. What Betsy didn’t know is that another girl who the boy really liked was standing near him. “Why did you do that,” she asked? “Do what?” the boy answered.

“Why did you tell that pretty girl she was ugly?”

“Her? I don’t even know her? Who cares anyway?” the boy said.

“Well, I care!” The girl walked away and left him thinking about what he had done. “HEROES HELP others—they don’t hurt others,” she said. Well, that got the boy’s attention, and a few minutes later, Betsy came walking back around the corner in the hallway. This time it was pretty obvious she had been crying. The boy was actually embarrassed to say anything to her so he just let her go by.

That afternoon he made the effort to find out what her name was. He also learned that Betsy liked chocolate. So the following day he waited for her in the hallway. When she came around the corner, he called her name and said, “You probably hate me, but I wanted you to have this.”

He gave her a note wrapped around a chocolate bar, and then he disappeared around the corner. Betsy opened the note.

“I was being kind of a jerk on Monday,” the note said, “and I just wanted you to know that I’m sorry.” Well, the rest of that day was all smiles for Betsy. She forgave him, and he—well he learned a little bit that day about becoming a HERO!

It was a Tuesday morning, and Mrs. Rhinehart’s class was going on a field trip to an outdoor art festival that was in town for a few days. Artwork from people all over the city was on display for everyone to see. One of the boys thought that no one was looking except his friends when he decided it would be funny to sign his name on one of the paintings. But Erica was seeing and hearing and fortunately was able to tell Mrs. Rhinehart before the boy could actually do it, although her timing was close. Another ten seconds and the painting would have been ruined.

One of the boys called Erica a tattle-tale, and while it’s true that Mrs. Rhinehart discourages tattling in her class, she now had a good example to HELP them understand the difference between tattling and reporting. Tattling is when you tell on someone about something that is not really your business just to see them get in trouble. Reporting is when you tell on someone for actions that truly need to be stopped by someone in authority. And this act of vandalism definitely needed to be stopped! Vandalism is destroying or changing, without the owner’s permission, anything that doesn’t belong to you. Vandalism is a crime, and reporting vandalism is not only everyone’s business, but everyone’s responsibility, too. Erica knew that, and while the other boy was up to no good, Erica was a HERO that day, because she saved the certain destruction of a beautiful painting.

Daniel was an awesome musician. When he was only six years old, he told his parents he wanted to learn as many instruments as he possibly could and that he wanted to conduct a great orchestra someday. There was no reason to doubt he could, either. Daniel made straight A’s in school, but he always wanted to learn more and more about music.

At some point along the way, his friends began to be interested in playing on sports teams. Daniel wasn’t really interested in playing sports. That’s when some of the boys, even those who had been his best friends, began to pick on Daniel about wanting to just play music all the time. More and more, Daniel found himself spending time alone, but the worst part was the teasing.

He would talk to his parents and say, “I don’t mind if they play ball, but why can’t they respect what I enjoy and what I can do the best?”

Well, Daniel’s parents tried to explain to him that sometimes kids are just very immature and selfish. They think it’s funny to put down someone else, and when they join with others in putting someone down, they feel safe because they are part of a group.

Daniel knew that was true, although he was still very hurt by the people who had once been his friends. He also knew that he couldn’t change the way they acted. He could only change himself. So knowing first hand how much it hurts to have others criticize and tease him, Daniel made a personal commitment to never do that to anyone else. He made a commitment to himself to always be a HERO who HELPS instead.

Every afternoon, Angel’s father would move the family car out of the driveway to let his son practice skateboarding. Angel was 9 years old when he first became interested in skateboarding. He read skateboarding magazines, and even a book by Tony Hawk. In fact, Tony Hawk became Angel’s HERO, and he wanted to be a champion skateboarder, too, but right now, he was just learning.

There were two older boys in Angel’s neighborhood who came by on their skateboards and saw Angel practicing in his driveway. They started teasing him and laughing at him. One day, Angel’s father saw what was going on, and he hurried to talk to the boys before they left. He said, “I see what you boys are doing to Angel.” Then he sat down in the middle of the driveway near the street. “Let’s talk,” he said. “You know, I find it interesting that Angel doesn’t laugh and make fun of you!” That got their attention! “Why would he?” sneered one of the boys. “Oh, because in his future, he’s an infinitely better skateboarder than either of you ever will be, and he knows it.”

“What?” the other boy said. “Well, you see,” said Angel’s father, “He works at it. He works hard just like he works hard in school and makes excellent grades! He sees a lot of success in his future, and he’s willing to work to make that happen. You could say that right now, he’s a HERO to his own future self—something you boys should consider for yourselves instead of wasting your time picking on little kids.”

Well, the two boys had never really heard anything like that before. And the truth is that Angel’s father was really a HERO to them that day, because that was the day they really began to understand.

One day Robbie’s father lost his job, and without a job, he could no longer pay his bills. As much as they hated to, they had to sell their nice house and move into a small trailer. After a while, his dad got another good job, and that’s when the whole family including Robbie got together and had a meeting. Robbie’s dad said that if everyone would be willing to live in that small trailer for a whole year, they could save enough money to buy a house even bigger and better than their first house. Robbie and his mom said, “I think we can do that!”

A few weeks later, Robbie invited a friend over after school. His friend thought it was cool that Robbie lived in that little trailer. But the next day at school, the boy started telling everybody that Robbie lived in a little camper that you could just pull behind a car. Robbie’s friend started teasing him and saying, “Hey camper-boy, how many rooms does your house have?” Another boy said, “One, but hey, it’s got wheels in the basement!”

Well, that’s when Rebecca walked up. She just looked at them for a moment, and then she said. “When I was little, my family lived in a camper for two years because my dad lost his job.”

One of the boys said, “No way! You live in like a mansion or something!”

“Not then,” she said. “Look, why don’t you try HELPING him instead of hurting him?” Then she turned and left. “HEROES HELP others—they don’t hurt others,” she said as she walked away.

Well, the boys had not thought about how much it must hurt Robbie’s feelings for them to say such things. That afternoon they told Robbie they were sorry, and they started being Robbie’s friends again instead of hurting him. They decided that day to start becoming HEROES instead.

Courtney was so happy the day her parents brought home a brand new puppy and let her name him. “Buddy,” she said, “I’ll call him Buddy.” Well, Courtney took care of Buddy amazingly well. She kept him clean, and she worked with him continually to teach him good manners and even a few tricks.

One day when Buddy was almost a year old, Courtney had a friend over for the weekend and they did a lot of different things, including playing with the dog. At one point Courtney said, “Watch this,” as she directed Buddy to catch a dog biscuit in the air after she threw it from almost across the whole yard! It was pretty impressive until Courtney’s friend said, “Aw that’s nothing. I saw a dog on animal planet that could catch 40 balls in 30 seconds!” Well, it wasn’t NOTHING to Courtney. She had worked hard teaching Buddy to do that. She felt really discouraged the rest of the afternoon.

Courtney’s friend was like that—just constantly finding ways to put down other people’s efforts. Courtney had always been taught to encourage other people! The other girl was doing just the opposite of encouraging. She had a habit of DIScouraging others. Well, the girl finally went home, and over the next few weeks, Courtney continued to teach Buddy new things as her friend continued to find ways to discourage other people with her put-down comments.

Just think, if she would learn to say kind and uplifting things to others—things that would make them feel good about themselves instead of the negative and discouraging comments that make them feel bad, she could start being a HERO—today! It’s really pretty simple.

Hi Kids. Let’s do something a little different today. I want to tell you about a time when I acted like ANYTHING but a HERO. The year was 1967, and Mrs. Bateman was my teacher. Our class was going on a field trip, and I was supposed to bring a sack lunch and a signed permission slip from my parents. I brought the lunch, but I forgot the permission slip. So my teacher said I couldn’t go. I said, “My mom made the lunch for me. Doesn’t that prove she knew I was going?” Again, I was told I couldn’t go. That’s when I said something very unkind to Mrs. Bateman and threw my lunch so hard that it splattered on the wall behind her. Then I took myself to the office where I knew she would send me anyway.

Mr. White was our principal, and he already knew I was coming. Mrs. Bateman had called him on the intercom, crying because of the horrible things I had said to her. Obviously, I was going to in-school suspension, but before that, I remember so well how Mr. White’s wisdom was greater than his anger. (Truth is, I had enough anger for both of us, and his anger probably would have just made mine worse.) Instead, he told me that I was selfish and hurtful, plain and simple. And that I was on the path to becoming a big loser. Again, plain and simple. He asked me if I wanted to be a loser—if that’s the kind of person I wanted to be. I said no. So he said, “Well, first of all, why don’t you start taking responsibility for your words, your actions, and your thoughts?” And then he said, “Why don’t you start HELPING others instead of hurting them?” And that was the day I began to understand.

Michael was in the 6th grade, and his younger brother was a second grader. Every chance Michael got, he and his friends delighted in telling his brother scary stories to frighten him. The more he cried, the more the older boys enjoyed it. Then Michael’s little brother started having nightmares about some of the stories he was being told. That’s when Michael’s mother and father learned what had been going on. They became very upset with Michael and his friends.

“What if someone were telling you stories like you’ve been telling your little brother?” asked Michael’s father. “I wouldn’t believe them,” said Michael.

“Well, what if you were a second grader? Or better yet, what if I began telling you about something terrifying that was about to happen, and you had no idea that I was just making it up —how would you feel?”

Michael and his friends had to stop and think a moment about that. But they still were not quite getting it, so his dad continued. “Creating fear in someone is called terrorism,” he said. “You hear a lot about terrorism and terrorists in the news. Those are people who try to frighten entire nations! But, guys, it is the same thing you’re doing to Michael’s little brother, and you think it’s so funny. But it’s really not funny at all!”

Well, the boys understood clearly now. They not only apologized to Michael’s mom and dad but to his little brother as well. They continued to tell stories, but now their stories were just funny and even HELPFUL as they tried to put a smile on little brother’s face instead of making him cry. They were becoming HELPFUL instead of hurtful. They were becoming HEROES.

Janna loved reading, but some of the other girls in Janna’s class were always wanting to do other things, sometimes things that were good, sometimes not. Soon the girls began making fun of Janna for spending so much time reading. They would call her names like “Book-slug” (their own immature version of “Book-worm.”). They thought it was funny. No one else did.

One day, Mrs. Wheeler, overheard the girls teasing Janna about her reading. That’s when she decided to step in.

“You’re trying to hurt Janna’s feelings simply because she likes to read.” She went on to say, “Reading is a wonderful way to learn. It’s a wonderful way to have fun, and it greatly HELPS develop your minds so you won’t just be airheads.” She paused for a moment and looked over her glasses at the girls after she said that.

Over the next few months, the girls including Janna started their own reading club. Soon others in the class began to check out this “reading thing” too. The girls now became HEROES because just through their example, they began HELPING others learn about the fun and the benefits of reading.

When Carlos was very young, he wanted to be a cowboy. Not just to ride horses and wear a big hat. He wanted to be like some of the cowboys in the old movies, strong, fast, and hard working but mostly honest and full of integrity. The role models he had in the movies didn’t have a lot of money. They didn’t have a lot of fancy things, but they had friendship. They had honor. And a man’s word was as good as gold. That’s what Carlos wanted to be like.

But Carlos was just a small boy. And furthermore, he was the new kid at a new school in a city far away from the town he knew as home. There was another boy in the class, and everybody was afraid of him. He was mean, and he didn’t make very good grades. It wasn’t because he wasn’t as smart as everyone else. He just let his meanness get in the way of learning. So he became jealous of the other kids who did make good grades, and that just made him angrier.

One day, when Mrs. Wilson, the teacher was out of the room, the boy got upset and turned over a bookshelf in the classroom. When the teacher came back and saw the scattered books, the boy who had turned over the shelf was the first to speak up. He said that Carlos had done it, and everyone else was too afraid to say otherwise.

But just as Carlos was about to be taken to the principal’s office, Brandon who was even smaller than Carlos gave Mrs. Wilson a note that said who really turned over the shelf. Brandon was just as afraid as everyone else, but he found a way to quietly tell the truth so Carlos would not get in trouble for something he didn’t do.

Since Carlos was new at the school, Brandon didn’t know him very well at all, but he stood up for what was right, and that certainly made Brandon a HERO.

It was a Wednesday afternoon, and so far things were going pretty smoothly in Mrs. Henry’s class. Well, so far. But right after lunch, Ryan found himself on the floor! He had just been pushed by the boy in the blue shirt. Then, everyone heard the boy say, “My dad’s on the school board, and he’s going to make your dad wish he had never been born!”

“What in the world is going on here?” asked Mrs. Henry. The boy said he had asked Ryan to borrow a pencil and that Ryan had said no. “Where is your pencil?” she asked.

“I forgot it,” he said.

“Did you stop to think that Ryan may need his pencil for class?” she replied.

“No ma’am,” the boy said.

“Okay then. But while we’re here,” said Mrs. Henry, “let’s talk about your father’s position that you seem to be using to justify your behavior. Your father is indeed serving in a very important way, but I fail to see how that makes you special. The boy shrugged his shoulders.

“Do you know anything about Ryan’s father?” Mrs Henry asked. The boy thought for a minute and finally said, no. “So you don’t know that Ryan’s father is in the Army and that he saved a whole company of soldiers in Iraq?” The boy’s eyes started to tear up at that point as he again said, “No ma’am.”

Mrs. Henry paused just a moment before she said, “That’s bigger than school board. A LOT bigger! But the truth is that Ryan’s father and your father are both working to HELP people. That makes them both HEROES. What are you doing to HELP others?” Well, the boy had a lot to think about that evening, and there’s no question that he learned something about being a HERO instead.

Jamie was at a friend’s house one day after school when his friend’s mother gave her son a brand new coat that she had bought earlier in the day. Immediately, Jamie’s friend became angry and said some horrible things to his mother. It wasn’t like a cool coat he saw a kid at school wearing, so he didn’t want it. Jamie was watching as the boy’s mother had tears come to her eyes.

Then, Jamie followed his friend as he went to pout in his room like some spoiled little baby. Jamie closed the door and said, “Dude, what was that?!!”

“It’s not the one I want,” said his friend. “Not the one you want?” said Jamie. “Okay, let me see if I understand this. Your mom knew you needed a coat. She took time out of her day, spent her money, and felt really good that she could do that for you. Did I miss something? Did you see her crying in there? Man, what kind of son are you?!”

Jamie’s friend was starting to feel pretty rotten by now. But Jamie didn’t stop there. “It’s a thing, dude, the coat is just a thing. It’s not nearly as important as your relationship with your mom. You need to carry yourself in there right now and apologize. Then start looking for ways to HELP her instead of hurting her! Comprende?”

Well, believe it or not, Jamie’s friend did begin to understand. He did apologize. He also started to realize how much she did for him, and he started HELPING her every way he could. He started right then becoming her HERO instead of hurting her. Oh, and the coat? Yes, the coat. He wore it proudly every day for the rest of the year!

Mrs. Reeves had been a teacher for a long, long time. This was going to be her last year to teach because she was finally retiring. Everybody loved Mrs. Reeves and wanted to be in her class. But one day, some boys in the back of the room were being disrespectful and not paying attention to her teaching. Mrs. Reeves was in the process of explaining a math problem when the disruptions began so she stopped and began speaking to the students as though she were speaking to her own grandchildren.

“Think about how you would feel,” she said in a kind voice, “if you had worked very hard to learn something, and as you were trying to teach it, someone began acting like you’re acting.” The class got really quiet now.

“You know,” she said, “teachers were once students, too. They go to school for twelve years, and then they go to college for four and sometime five more years, and then when they become teachers, they still keep learning always so they can be good teachers. Then after they’ve put all that work into it, and students don’t listen, it’s really hard to take sometimes. Teachers can get their feelings hurt, too,” she said.

Mrs. Reeves went on to say that hurting a teacher’s feelings by not paying attention and by doing things to distract others could be just very hurtful behavior.

Well, that’s all that had to be said. Those boys in the back got the message. They decided right then to start working with the teacher to HELP her instead of working against the teacher to hurt her. That day they decided to become HEROES instead!

Maria and her family were taking a trip one Saturday to visit her cousin. On the way, her father was nice enough to stop and get some drinks for everyone. After they had been back on the road for a little while, Maria’s brother finished his drink and threw the bottle out the window!

Immediately, their father stopped the car and went back to pick up the empty bottle. When he got back in the car, he said, “Son, don’t you ever throw anything out of a car again! That is called littering.”

Maria spoke up and said, “Yeah, it’s called hurting others, too!” Her father smiled. “I hadn’t really thought about it like that,” he said, “but you may be right!” He had taught Maria and her brother all about HEROES who HELP others, and that the opposite of HELPING is hurting. “It kind of hurts all of us,” he said, “when you throw trash on the road, doesn’t it?” Maria understood perfectly, but her brother said, “What do you mean?” So their dad explained. He said, “When you throw out trash in places where trash should not be, it makes the landscape ugly for people to look at when it should be beautiful, AND then someone has to spend their time picking it up when I’m sure they would rather be doing something else.”

Well, Maria’s brother not only began to understand, he even had an idea about how to HELP. He said, “Dad, would we be HEROES if our family pick up trash like once a month or something?” Well, everyone thought that was a great idea, and that’s exactly what they started doing!

Kyle was in the fifth grade, and he was a pretty good singer. One day Kyle invited his friend Jamie over to do homework together and then maybe play some games. For some reason, Jamie just felt like singing so that’s what he did. Just then Kyle said, “Jamie, cut it out, man. You can’t sing.”

Well, that’s all Kyle’s dad had to hear. He began to explain to Kyle and Jamie that something like that had happened to him one time when he was a young boy. “No way,” said Jamie, “You’re an awesome singer!”

“I wouldn’t exactly say ‘awesome,’” said Kyle’s father, but I think you both can understand the point I’m about to make. You see, one day when I was about your age, I began singing just like you did, Jamie, and my friend told me that I couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket if it had handles on it! Well, I didn’t admit it to anyone then, but it hurt my feelings so badly that I never sang again in front of anyone until I was nearly 30 years old. That’s when a lady accidentally overheard me singing to myself. She said I should start singing at weddings and in church and other places.”

Kyle’s father went on to say how he told her about what his friend had done so many years before. She said, “Well, that’s a terrible shame because you can sing! I’m guessing your friend was probably just jealous.” Kyle’s father agreed.

Well, after hearing that, Kyle realized that he just learned a big lesson. He never wanted to be like that boy so many years ago. He would much rather be a HERO who HELPS people instead.

It was school picture day! Niesha walked into her classroom that morning and saw all the other kids dressed up. Then she looked down at the shirt she was wearing. It was her big sister’s old school t-shirt from two years ago. Niesha had forgotten about picture day, and she knew it was too late to do anything about it now!

Just then two of Niesha’s friends came over to her and started teasing her for not wearing nice clothes on picture day. One girl said, “Where did you find that shirt, Niesha—in a trash can?!” And they both laughed.

That’s when another girl named Melinda, who was wearing a very nice shirt, said, “Niesha, don’t let those girls treat you that way—besides, I thought they were supposed to be your friends!” Melinda was someone that Niesha didn’t even know very well. “I have an idea,” said Melinda. “I can get my picture taken first, and then Niesha can wear my shirt for her picture if it’s okay with the teacher.”

“Well,” said Mrs. Atkins. “There’s a HERO idea if I’ve ever heard one!” And then Mrs. Atkins turned to the two girls and said, “Did we learn a lesson here? Every time you have a chance to hurt others, all you have to do is think a little bit, and you can be a HERO by HELPING instead!” The girls nodded their heads and smiled. They understood now.

Well, the idea worked. Niesha did use Melinda’s shirt for the school picture, the four girls became friends, and Melinda taught everybody how to be HELPFUL instead of hurtful!

Mr. Delaney was teaching his class one day as a boy in the third row was doing everything but paying attention. And while he was wasting his own time, he was tapping a pencil on his desk so loudly that no one around him could concentrate on what Mr. Delaney was saying. Finally, Mr. Delaney stopped and addressed the boy with the bouncing pencil.

He said, “It makes me sad that you would have such little regard for your own future that you would waste an opportunity to learn something as important as history. But it makes me angry that you would deprive others that opportunity.”

“You can hurt someone by causing physical harm such as hitting them. You can hurt someone by causing emotional harm by calling them names or saying unkind words. You can hurt someone by causing collateral harm when you damage or destroy their property. And,” he said, “You can hurt someone by causing intellectual harm by depriving them of opportunities to learn.” That was Mr. Delaney’s personal favorite, and he never missed a chance to say it!

Mr. Delaney knew how to get his message across. Not only did the boy stop bouncing his pencil, he started paying attention, but he even went a step further. When he would see some of his friends disrupt the class in different ways, he would talk to them at lunch or at recess and tell them the same kinds of things that Mr. Delaney had told him. He was becoming a HERO by HELPING others to have what Mr. Delaney called a “Learning-Friendly” environment!

One day, Mrs. Green’s class was reviewing things they had learned that semester. Mrs. Green was holding up some giant flash cards with math problems on them, going around the room showing each student a card. One at a time, they were supposed to answer the problem as quickly as they could. Tevin got a little nervous when he knew it was his turn. 12x = 48 the card said. Tevin knew immediately the answer was 4, but he blurted out, “12.” He felt bad about saying the wrong answer, but he felt much worse when the boy who sits across from him started laughing.

“Okay,” said Mrs. Green. “I see it’s time now to do some reviewing about HELPING and hurting.” She turned to the boy who laughed at Tevin and said, “You were acting like anything but a HERO just now. Did you know that?”

“No way,” the boy said. Mrs. Green asked the boy if it would hurt his feelings for someone to laugh at him when he made a mistake. “Yes ma’am,” he said, as he just looked at the floor. Then Mrs. Green said, “Would anyone else have their feelings hurt if someone laughed at you?” Hands went up all over the room.

“And that’s NOT what HEROES do.” said Mrs. Green, “But what DO HEROES do?” she asked. “They HELP people,” said the class, and one girl said, “They make people smile!” Well, when the boy who had laughed at Tevin heard that, he began to realize that he really was being hurtful instead of HELPFUL. He told Mrs. Green and Tevin that he was sorry, and beginning that very day, he decided to always be a HERO and never again hurt others with his words or actions!

Laura had two very close friends. They spent all of the time they possibly could together. They shared clothes, earrings, and secrets. But there was one thing her two friends were very good at that Laura couldn’t really do at all, and it made her dread summer. Because of an accident in the water when she was very young, Laura was afraid of being in water deep enough to swim in and for that reason, she never learned how to swim. She had tried to learn, but she was just too afraid. Laura’s friends would laugh at her.

One day when Laura was not with them, one girl’s mom heard them talking and laughing about Laura while they were riding in the car on the way to the swimming pool . She told them she was very disappointed in them for talking about their friend that way.

“Why don’t you invite Laura to come to the pool and tell her that you’ll take turns staying at the edge of the pool with her? You might even HELP her overcome a little of her fear. But it just doesn’t make any sense to make her feel worse about something that she has little control over.”

Well, you know, they turned the car around right then and headed toward Laura’s house. Laura and her friends had a wonderful time laughing and playing in the pool together. And who knows? Someday Laura may learn to swim. But one thing is for sure. Laura’s friends learned that day how to be HEROES instead!

It was time for one of Mr. Delaney’s special stories again, and the class couldn’t wait to hear it. “It’s a true story,” said Mr. Delaney. “And it happened in a town called Cambridge in Nova Scotia, Canada. You see, there was a boy whose family had just moved there, and on his first day of school, he wore a pink shirt.

“Well, there were some students in the school who used that pink shirt as an excuse to give the boy a really hard time. They even pushed him around and hit him. He couldn’t believe what the people were like at his new school. He was afraid that everyone in the school was like that, but was he ever surprised the next day.”

Mr. Delaney paused a moment before the next part, because this is where it really gets good! He said, “You see, two older students named David and Travis saw what was going on, and they thought it was time to send the perpetrators a message. They got all their friends to agree to wear pink shirts the next day. It was amazing,” he said! “Word spread like wildfire to EVERYONE—except the kids doing the teasing. They didn’t know anything about it. If someone didn’t have a pink shirt, they went out and bought one, and the next day the new boy could not believe his eyes. The whole school was wearing pink. They were there to show support for him and give the others the message that ‘enough is enough.’

“The new boy knew he had lots of friends now, especially David and Travis, who that day, became HEROES in a very special way.”

Then Mr. Delaney concluded by saying to his class, “I’m Richard Delaney. That’s what I know about the beginning of these HEROES, and I know that you can become a HERO, too!”

They thought she was a really great teacher then, but something had gone wrong this year that Nancy just could not understand. They started saying things like Nancy made good grades because her mom was a teacher. They said that Nancy never got in trouble because her mom worked at the school.

One day, Nancy walked by a few girls on the playground, and one of them started saying, “Teacher’s kid, teacher’s kid,” and then they all joined in.

One of the teachers on duty saw the whole thing. She said to the girls, “I believe you owe Nancy an apology. The fact that her mother is a teacher at our school does not mean that Nancy does not have to work just as hard as you do and follow the same rules that you do. Her mother HELPED some of you learn to read in the first grade. And now you’re being mean to Nancy

just because Nancy is her daughter?!”

By this time, the girls were feeling very ashamed. One of them had even begun to cry. Then she gave Nancy a hug and told her how sorry she was. The other girls also apologized. They had heard repeatedly about how some people hurt others, and that HEROES HELP others, but today it all started to make sense. Today they decided to become HEROES instead.

It was the Rockets against the Whitesox, Little League Baseball at its best! In the bottom of the first inning, Robbie was at bat for the Sox. First pitch, a swing and a miss! Pitch two, Robbie chokes up on the bat, and Strike Two! Robbie is usually a decent hitter, but this pitcher is good! Here’s pitch three, and it’s wild! Robbie steps back, but not far enough. Wham, it hits him on the left shoulder and glances to his jaw, as Robbie goes down. Immediately, before Robbie’s own team members could get to him, the catcher and the third baseman were there trying to help. Fortunately, Robbie was not badly hurt, but the game had to be stopped for a few minutes. Then the pitcher for the Rockets, who had thrown that wild pitch, started yelling. “C’mon, Play Ball!” And the longer it took, the angrier he got as he kicked the dirt on the pitcher’s mound. He was the best pitcher the Rockets had, but that didn’t matter. Coach Henderson sent him to the bench for the rest of the game.

After the game, the pitcher’s dad began chewing out Coach Henderson. He said, “What’s wrong with you, Coach?! He didn’t do nothin’ – it was an accident!” That’s when Coach Henderson said, “On my team, we learn about heroes who help people, and bullies who hurt people. Now, yes, I believe it was an accident, but his attitude was that of a bully, and I don’t let bullies play on my team.” He said, “Did you notice the other boys on my team rushing to help that batter? Well, your son could have made the same choice they did.”

That night, the pitcher had a lot to think about, and you know, he realized that even though it was an accident, his attitude was that of a bully because he didn’t care that he had hurt Robbie. And he decided right then to start having an attitude of helping instead.

Well, the next day, Mr. Delaney did explain. He said being a kid is just practice time for being a grown-up, and now is the time to start HELPING what he called “the future you.” He said that many adults out there are happy and successful while others are unhappy and unsuccessful.

“One good reason for that,” he said, “is that some worked hard and made good choices when they were kids, and some did not. Some were HELPFUL to themselves, and some were HURTFUL to themselves.”

Well, Bay decided right then that very day to start learning the difference between good choices and bad choices. Bay had already been a HERO to others. Today, however, she became a HERO to herself!

Addison and his friend were in the store together while Addison’s mom did some shopping. They were walking up and down the aisles just looking at stuff when they wound up in the hardware section. Addison spotted a set of allen wrenches, just what he needed to fix his bunk-bed at home. It had a metal frame and some of the brackets were getting loose. One of those wrenches could fix it right up.

“Well, just put it in your coat pocket,” said his friend.

“I don’t think so,” said Addison!

“Oh, and next you’re gonna tell me that it would HURT somebody to take something from a store,” said his friend. He knew Addison was big on the whole “HELPING is the opposite of hurting thing, and that HEROES HELP others.”

“Well, I hadn’t really thought about it like that,” said Addison. “But I guess it’s true, because it is stealing from the store which cuts into profits. And in turn, the store has to raise prices to make up for it so it hurts everyone who shops there. So I guess… Yes, that is what I’m gonna tell you. Not only that, it is called shoplifting, and it’s a crime. Bad idea all the way around.”

Later, Addison told his mom about the conversation with his friend. She was so happy that he had stood up for what was right. Then she said, “You know, your example could have HELPED him a great deal to understand right from wrong. You just might have been a HERO.”

Mr. Johnson, the principal at Riverside Elementary School came on the intercom and said, “May I have your attention, please? If anyone knows who vandalized the wall in the 4th grade wing, I would appreciate your coming and telling me.”

Well, sure enough, somebody had taken a red marker and messed up what had been a beautiful scene painted on the wall. The two boys who did it thought they were doing something funny. They also thought no one was watching. But they were wrong.

Some 5th grade girls who stayed late on Thursdays for gymnastics were in the building. One of them saw everything and she did exactly what she should have done. She told her parents about it when she got home. Her dad called Mr. Johnson the next day, and the kids who did it were called in and punished.

Mrs. McHenry, the artist who originally painted the scene on the wall was called in to fix the damage. But now the problem was deciding how to pay Mrs. McHenry for fixing the painting. Well, the two boys’ parents would have to do that. So now the boys’ parents were mad at their sons for embarrassing them and for costing them money. The whole school was mad at the boys for messing up the nice wall in the first place, and the boys were mad at themselves because now they had to do extra work to pay back their parents. What a mess!

It would have been so much better if the boys had done something HELPFUL instead of something hurtful. They could have been HEROES instead!

Juan put several things inside his backpack before going to school: books, homework papers, and a special treat his Dad had given him to go with lunch. And several times throughout the morning, Juan thought about that special treat in his backpack.

Then Mrs. Anderson said it was time for lunch and to get anything they needed from their backpacks. But Juan couldn’t find his backpack, although he knew he had hung it right beside the supply shelf in the closet. He asked a friend to HELP him look, and he even asked Mrs. Anderson to HELP him look, but Juan’s backpack was simply not there.

Juan was not happy. But Mrs. Anderson said they had to go to lunch, and they could search for Juan’s backpack afterward.

As soon as they got back to the classroom, Mrs. Anderson talked to everyone very seriously about what had happened to Juan’s backpack. She even told them about the special treat he had brought for lunch. “I’m very sad,” she said, “that someone in our class has played this trick on Juan. It’s not funny, and whoever did it needs to stand strong and honest and admit it, not hide like a coward.” Well, slowly, two boys raised their hands. “Mrs. Anderson, we thought it would be a good joke, and we never thought about how it would make Juan feel.” Then the boys gave Juan his backpack. They realized what they had done was hurtful. They also knew the opposite of hurting is HELPING and that people who HELP others are called HEROES. And beginning that day, those boys decided to start HELPING people instead of hurting them!

One day, as Mrs. Raley’s class was on the way to the library, another class passed by on the other side of the sidewalk. Suddenly, Clarissa, who had always been quiet and respectful, reached out and hit a little boy on the arm, hard! Mrs. Raley and the rest of Clarissa’s class just couldn’t believe what they saw! “Why did you do that?” said Mrs. Raley. Clarissa laughed and said, “Oh, it’s just my little brother!”

Well, as the rest of the class went into the library, Mrs. Raley kept Clarissa out for a few minutes to talk about what she had done. The teacher could tell that Clarissa did not think she had done anything wrong since the boy she hit was her brother. “Clarissa,” said Mrs. Raley, “How do you think it made your little brother feel when you hit him in front of his whole class?” Clarissa could tell from Mrs. Raley’s voice that she had not been a very good big sister to him. Mrs. Raley always talked about HELPING others, and never hurting them—and that people who HELP others are called HEROES. But now, finally, it was really starting to make sense to Clarissa and Clarissa wanted to be a HERO.

She learned an important lesson that day, and now she tries to always be a HERO to those around her—even to her little brother!

Ray had worked for weeks on his science project. His assignment was to grow sugar crystals. It was a difficult assignment, but Ray was always up to a good challenge. First he studied all about different kinds of sugars. He was so surprised to learn of all the different sources for sugar! He carefully measured everything, and finally he was ready to start the process of crystalizing liquid sugars. His display was perfect, and he was ready to bring it to class.

It was now the big day—the class science fair. Everyone brought their projects. Ray had the best one in the class, but Ray’s friend (who sometimes really wasn’t his friend) had the worst one. He had started his project only the night before because he kept putting it off. When he got to school and saw how good the others were and how bad his was, he became angry. Instead of realizing his own mistake, he quietly poured some water on Ray’s project which completely ruined his sugar crystals!

Just think. If Ray’s friend had done his project the way he should have, he could have come to school feeling good about himself. He could have looked at Ray’s project along with the other projects and said nice things about them which would have made Ray and the others feel even better about themselves! If that had been the path he had chosen, he could have started right there being a HERO instead. You see, that’s where HEROES start—just making the choice HELPING instead of hurting.

It was recess time, and Amy and Carley enjoyed picking some little wild flowers to make a bouquet for their teacher. That’s when they noticed a mother bird had built a nest to lay her eggs. When the girls ran to tell Mrs. Brown, she said they probably shouldn’t play very near that tree for a while. They could frighten the mother bird, and she might fly off. Without her there to keep her eggs warm, they would never hatch. “Yes ma’am,” they said as they ran to the swing which was close enough to watch the nest without bothering the mother bird.

Amy and Carley couldn’t wait until recess each day so they could swing and watch the mother bird sitting on her eggs. But one day, as the girls were swinging, they saw a boy from another class who had also discovered the bird’s nest. He had a stick in his hand, and he was jabbing at the nest. The mother bird had flown to a much higher branch, she and was chirping very loudly at the boy. Amy started yelling at the boy and begging him to stop while Carley ran for Mrs. Brown. The boy laughed at Amy. “It’s just some old birds,” he said. Well, immediately, Mrs. Brown was there and sternly told the boy to stop! She reminded him about how she always tells her students about being kind to other people, but this time she said, “And that applies to animals, too!”

Well, the boy had seen his older brother being mean to animals, so he thought it was okay. But now, he began to realize that it really is wrong to hurt animals just like it is wrong to hurt people. And so starting that very day, he decided never again to hurt people or animals. Instead, he decided to HELP. He chose that day to become a HERO instead!

Jacob was sitting quietly in the cafeteria eating the lunch he had brought to school. He was eagerly anticipating the chocolate Star Crunch he was saving for dessert when suddenly the new kid grabbed it and began eating it right there in front of Jacob! Well, Jacob jumped up and grabbed the little thief by the collar when instantly the teacher was in the middle of what was almost a fight right there in the cafeteria!

Mrs. Jones took both boys straight to the office to straighten this whole thing out. Well, after talking for a little while with the principal, it was soon discovered that the new boy’s family was very poor. To make matters worse, the boy’s father had just lost his job, and the boy had not eaten anything at all since lunch time the day before! Jacob was surprised at how sad he felt. His father had a good job, and Jacob couldn’t imagine what being that poor must be like.

Jacob talked to his mom that evening about what had happened, and they decided to buy an extra snack-pack in case the boy did not have lunch the next day. Well, Jacob did not know that the principal had called the other boy’s father and that a school lunch would be worked out for him each day. But the new boy saw what Jacob was planning to do, and even though he already had a school lunch, he appreciated Jacob for thinking of him, and starting that day, they became friends.

Yes, Jacob started out reacting in a way that would have hurt the new boy. But soon he turned things around to be someone who HELPED instead of someone who hurt, and Jacob became a HERO.

Kara and Trisha were carrying their trays in the cafeteria when suddenly Trisha tripped and down went her tray. The whole thing all over the floor right in front of her. She was mortified! But to make matters worse, some kids at the table right behind her started laughing. When she turned around to say something, she accidentally placed her right foot in the middle of the mashed potatoes, and she went down, too! How embarrassing! And how sad that the kids who were laughing did not even offer to HELP her up. Instead, they just laughed louder and began calling her names.

But Kara didn’t laugh. She saw how embarrassed Trisha was, and she knew it could happen to anyone. She and a boy who was nearby HELPED Trisha up from the floor while the kids at the end of the table were still laughing. By this time, though, their name calling had become more sophisticated as they tried to outdo each other with their comments.

That’s when Kara calmly said to them, “Okay, which one of you has never fallen down before?” No one raised a hand or said, “Me” or anything. They had all fallen down at one time or another. Then Kara said, “How would you have felt if someone had laughed at you and called you names when you slipped?” Again, no answers. Kara finished with a challenge. She said, “Why don’t you use your brain power to think of ways to HELP someone else instead of hurting them with all the clever names you think up?” Well, you know, right then, one of the girls and two of the boys apologized, and soon the others also decided it was about time to start HELPING people instead of hurting them.

Wyndel was a good student in the 5th grade. But he was quiet, and a lot of the kids did not know very much about him—like the fact that Wyndel was an amazing horseback rider! There was another boy in Wyndel’s class who was a great football player. The only problem was that the football player also had no problem putting others down when he chose to. He would tease Wyndel, laugh at him, and call him names all because Wyndel was not very good at football—until one day when Mrs. Rouseau saw what was going on.

She took Wyndel and the other boy aside, and then said to the football player, “When you can ride a horse as well as Wyndel can ride a horse, THEN we’ll talk about your right to criticize him about not being a good football player!”

Well, what Mrs. Rouseau knew was this. She knew that one of Wyndel’s very special talents was horseback riding just like one of the other boy’s special talents was being a great football player. She knew that every person in her class and everybody in the school each had a very special talent or a group of very special talents that was different from everybody else’s. Some of the students knew what their talents were, but most had not even discovered them yet.

She explained to the two boys that no one has the right to put someone else down when they can’t do something as well as you can, because there is something, even if they don’t know what it is yet, that they can do better than you! Just think, if the football player had decided to HELP Wyndel learn more about football instead of putting him down for not being able to play, he could have been a HERO instead.

Thirty five years ago, there was a boy named Lewis Thomason, and one day, Lewis’ class was on a field trip to the symphony house. The orchestra was not playing at the time, but some of the musicians were there. Lewis absolutely loved everything about the symphony, but some of the other boys in the class did not. One of those boys who had always given Lewis a hard time, was just waiting for a chance to make Lewis’ day miserable. At lunchtime, Lewis had a sandwich, some fruit, and a grape soda in a can. When Lewis wasn’t looking, the boy quickly shook up the grape soda, so that when Lewis opened it, it spewed everywhere. The boy just quietly laughed to himself and nobody saw him do it. The rest of the year, he was Lewis’ worst nightmare, and he was just shallow-minded enough to be proud of himself for that.

Well, as it sometimes happens, that boy went on giving Lewis Thomason a difficult time, and then someone else, and someone else, all the way through school until he finally dropped out. He got a job, then another job, and another job, and another, and another, and another. He was always picking on someone and getting fired.

One day he went just a little too far and found himself in jail on some pretty serious charges. In all those years of getting in trouble, he had just never learned his lesson until today when the bailiff in the courtroom said, “All rise, for the Honorable Judge Lewis Thomason.”

Just think, if that boy while he was still young, had chosen to HELP others instead of hurting them—if he had chosen to become a HERO—today, he could be called “honorable,” too, just like Lewis.

Rebecca and her three friends were almost inseparable! They had even made up a language that only the four of them knew! For example, “Brocalli kal wishcolar” meant “Meet me at McDonald’s at 5 o’clock.”

One day, Kathy Satterstone asked Rebecca and her friends if they would like to come to her birthday party. Before Rebecca could even open her mouth, one of the other girls said, “I don’t think so. We don’t hang with outsiders!” And the other two girls just giggled. Well, just then, Kathy’s smile dropped, Rebecca’s jaw dropped, and one of the other three said, “Becca, come-on, it’s time to cruise on out of Losersville.”

The next day, Rebecca called a meeting of the four girls, using their special language to tell them when and where. She had been thinking all night and was hardly able to sleep. She knew what the girls had done was wrong, and that there was no excuse for treating Kathy the way they had. But what could she do?

Well, she decided to call Kathy’s mother and ask what Kathy would like to have for a present. Mrs. Satterstone told Rebecca about Kathy’s new favorite rock group. Rebecca found out they had four CDs out now, and so she bought one of them.

When she met with the other three girls, she told them what she had done, and she suggested that they buy the other three. “CDs,” they said, “that’s a pretty expensive gift!” Rebecca said, “After the way we treated Kathy, I think we owe it to her.” And Rebecca took the lead to turn something bad into something good. Rebecca became a HERO.

It was a long lonesome bus ride home for Lisa after a long lonesome day at school. Instead of riding the bus to school that morning, her mother had taken her to school. Just as Lisa was getting out of the car, her baby brother spilled chocolate milk on her shirt. It wasn’t a very big stain, and she thought she could clean it up in the restroom before school started. That’s when some other girls saw her, and it just went downhill from there.

Lisa had always been a good student. She made good grades, but it really bothered her when others would tease her although she was mostly just quiet about it. Later as Lisa was telling her mother about the day, she burst into tears. Her mother consoled her and explained that people who choose to put others down are just making a very bad choices.

She said that often they have someone in their own lives who are hurting them or that they haven’t made the effort to accomplish things that would make them feel good about themselves so they think they must make others feel bad. At the very least, she told Lisa they are just very selfish people. She said they don’t understand that all they would have to do is HELP people instead of hurting them, and they could be HEROES instead! And, you know what? Lisa’s mom was exactly right.

It is so easy to become a HERO. All you have to do is HELP others instead of hurting them!

Jeremy was an average student in Mr. Delaney’s class. He could make Bs and Cs without even trying. He was strong and healthy and intelligent. He had a lot of friends, but when it came to grades, sports, work, or anything else, he just didn’t measure up to what he was really capable of.

Mr. Delaney kept Jeremy after school one day and started talking with him about HEROES who HELP. Jeremy started to worry. “What are you saying?, he asked.” Mr. Delaney said, “I don’t know, Jeremy. When you could be a HERO to someone in a big way and you don’t…” He kind of trailed off at that point to make Jeremy think a little. “Okay, I give up. Who am I not HELPING?” asked Jeremy.

“A lot of people,” said Mr. Delaney. “First of all, yourself—and more specifically, your future self. And then your future family, your children, and who knows how many others—if you don’t become all you are capable of being.” The teacher had Jeremy’s attention now! Mr. Delaney continued. “You have the ability (and I think because you have the ability, you also have the responsibility) to become a doctor, a scientist, a researcher, a teacher, an architect, an engineer, a lecturer—any number of things that could HELP hundreds, thousands, even millions of people, and provide a good living for yourself and your family. But you will never do any of that if you don’t dramatically increase the amount of effort you put into everything you do.

Well, Jeremy had never heard anything like that before. He had never thought past next week! But now he began to understand what Mr. Delaney was trying to tell him, and he started that same day working diligently to build the foundation for that future HERO.

Everyone in Mrs. Madison’s 5th grade class knew the girl in the back of the room with the long dark hair wasn’t a very nice person. She pretty much stayed to herself until one of the other students would say something to her, and then she would snap back and say something ugly or mean. What the other kids did not know was that at home, there was a lot of yelling going on, and she felt like nobody cared about her there, so why should anyone care about her at school?

One day Mrs. Lasiter, the school counselor called her in to talk. They talked about a lot of things including what it was like at home and the fact that she did not seem to have friends at school. Mrs. Lasiter explained that sometimes we have to learn to make good choices on our own if we’re not getting HELP at home. Sometimes we have to go to our teachers or counselors and ask for HELP. Sometimes we need to look around for other students who are being successful in school and who are making good grades—students who are doing extra things like sports, or music, or school clubs, and we have to learn to be their friend.

She said, we must learn to HELP others by saying and doing nice things for them instead of saying and doing ugly and mean things—even if ugly and mean things happen at home. And you know what? She listened! Gradually, she started smiling instead of scowling. Her grades improved dramatically. She began to make friends, and she began HELPING others, too, instead of hurting them.

Shawn was on his way to class one morning when, out of nowhere, a sixth grader came running down the hall like he was sprinting the hundred meter dash. WHAM! He runs right into Shawn. Shawn went down, and his backpack went sliding across the floor nearly tripping someone else. The kid running said “Sorry,” and took off again only to run into Mr. Turner who had just stepped out of his office.

Mr. Turner checked on Shawn who was just a little shaken, and then he turned his attention to the boy runner. “Now you see what happens when you break the rules, don’t you? You know we have a rule that says, “No running in the halls.” That’s when the boy told Mr. Turner in an angry voice, “I said I was sorry!”

“You can’t go around breaking rules and think it’s okay, if you just say you’re sorry,” said the principal. “Rules are there to protect our students—ALL of our students, including you! You always have a choice—to HELP others (AND yourself) or to HURT others (and yourself). And people who HELP others are known as what?”

“HEROES(?),” the boy said, more like it was a question than an answer. But from that moment, he realized he had some thinking to do. Eventually he realized Mr. Turner was right. And that’s when he decided to start ALWAYS HELPING people instead of hurting them. He started following the rules, too!

School was just about to start, and everyone was scurrying through the 3rd and 4th grade hall, when suddenly Laura found herself face down on the floor! She wasn’t sure if someone tripped her purposely, or if she tripped accidently on somebody else’s foot. About all she did know is that she was embarrassed.

But when she tried to get up she couldn’t because several other kids had stopped all around her. Then she realized they were laughing at her. Now, she was more than embarrassed! She was mortified, and she just wanted to cry. What was probably only a few seconds seemed like an hour to Laura.

Soon after the others left, still laughing, a 5th grader who Laura did not even know stopped to HELP gather her things.

“Hi, my name is LaToya,” the girl said, and Laura introduced herself, too.

“Why did they just stand there and laugh?” she asked, holding back tears.

LaToya said, “I guess some kids just take longer to grow up than others do. Anyway, don’t worry about them. They’ll catch on someday.” Laura felt like she just got a big sister to HELP her out around school, and LaToya felt like she just made a new friend. It’s always a choice. You can take the immature approach of hurting others, or you can follow LaToya’s example and become a HERO!

When she was in the first grade, Francine could read better than anybody else in the class. In fact, she could read better than the 4th graders when she was in the first grade! She had a natural talent for being able to read well, but she knew that just having the talent wasn’t enough. She worked hard—every day—to learn bigger words, to read long sentences more smoothly, and to read thicker books.

All of the kids in Francine’s first grade class were learning to read—some better than others— except for one boy. He couldn’t read at all. When Mrs. Williams would call on him to read aloud, he just had to sit there. He couldn’t do anything, and it was almost like he could feel the others looking at him. He was so embarrassed, and that was bad enough but things got a whole lot worse. You see, there were some kids in the class who would laugh at him and tease him and even call him names—all because he couldn’t read. It got so bad that he didn’t even want to try anymore. Well, Francine decided to do something about it.

After school one day, while she was waiting for her parents to pick her up, she sat down beside the boy who couldn’t read. She offered to HELP him, and that’s exactly what she did. Soon the boy learned he really could read when someone showed him how! Francine HELPED him everyday for a long time, and by the end of the school year, he had become the second best reader in the class!

Think about this. Earlier that school year, since Francine was such a good reader and the boy could not read at all, she could have chosen to treat him horribly, like some of the others were doing! But she chose to HELP instead of to hurt. Francine CHOSE to become a HERO.

In P.E. class, Coach Adams was having a discussion about health. He reviewed the key points to good health: exercise (both physical and mental), diet, hygiene, fresh air, and sunshine. When he talked about sunshine, one of the boys laughed and said, “Yeah, Marcus got plenty of sunshine yesterday planting flowers with his mother!”

Coach Adams looked at the boy. “You got something against sunshine?” The boy said no. “You got a problem with flowers?” Again, the boy said no. “You got a problem with somebody spending time with their mom?” The guys were always teasing Marcus about his love for working with plants. He would rather be in a vegetable garden or a flower garden than anyplace else! And he knew a great deal about horticulture. Coach Adams explained that we really need people like Marcus because they HELP in so many ways. “Where do you think most of the food comes from that you eat?” said the coach.

One boy said, “The grocery store?” Coach Adams just looked at him… “Farms,” he said. “And from farmers, who are very knowledgeable about growing plants. And what about all the flowers and shrubs that make homes, and buildings, and parks look so nice—where do they come from? People like Marcus who love growing them.

“And one more thing,” said the coach. “When my little brother was growing up, he was just like Marcus. I used to laugh at him and his little flowers. Well, today he owns a very successful landscaping company in three states, and he makes a LOT of money. So, you see, there are many of opportunities out there for someone like Marcus to HELP the world in some very big ways. If I were you,” said the coach, “I’d be nice to Marcus. He could be a real HERO someday!”

Ryan’s class was just getting in from lunch, and all the students were returning to their desks. Just then, the boy behind Ryan quickly moved Ryan’s chair as he started to sit down. Of course, Ryan fell to the floor, and the other boy just kept walking. To his surprise, however, Mrs. Ledford had just entered the room and saw the whole thing. She first asked if Ryan was okay, and he was, although a little embarrassed. Then the teacher addressed the other boy. She asked simply, “Why in the world would you do that?” The boy couldn’t think of a good answer, so she just sent him to the office.

The next day when Ryan came to school, the other boy was back. To everyone’s surprise, Ryan went to the boy and said, “Hey man, I just got a new video game, and my mom says you can come over this afternoon if you want.” Well, the other boy couldn’t believe what he had just heard! At first, he wanted to say something cruel to Ryan, but he also couldn’t resist such an invitation. When he got to Ryan’s house, Ryan’s mother was nice to him. Later, Ryan’s father came home and he was pretty cool, too. And by the end of the visit, the two boys were becoming friends. You see, the people at Ryan’s house were a lot nicer than the people at his own house. He began to see that people who HELPED each other were a lot happier than people who hurt each other. He began to see that being a HERO was a whole lot better.

DeShawn and his best friend, Dane couldn’t wait to go skating. DeShawn had been skating twice before, but he still wasn’t very good at it, and Dane had never been before. Then came Saturday, and DeShawn’s mom took them to the skating rink.

Dane was having a pretty hard time and was looking kind of clumsy. It seemed the more he tried, the more he fell. That’s when two other boys, who were fairly good skaters, began making fun of Dane. Every time they would come around and pass Dane, they would laugh, and sometimes they would say things like, “The skates go on the floor, not in the air!” Dane was really getting discouraged until Hanna skated over to him. She was the girl in the middle of the rink practicing her dance moves and double axel spins. “Don’t listen to those guys,” she said. “You’re doing a lot better than I did when I started.” Just keep practicing, and you’ll be better than them in no time. Then she took his hand and HELPED him for the next hour and a half.

On the way home, DeShawn was telling his mom all about what happened, and Dane was feeling pretty good about the progress he had made. DeShawn’s mom began explaining what the boys already knew. The two boys at the skating rink were just selfishly putting you down to make themselves feel better—plain and simple. And Hanna, who was the same age, was being a HERO because she was willing to spend her time and effort HELPING someone else. Oh, and the two boys? Yes, they began having some serious thoughts about the example Hanna was setting. And it wasn’t long before they found themselves actually HELPING other people, too instead of hurting them.

It was a warm day during the first part of the new school year, and Jason had stayed late to HELP Mrs. Stewart unpack some books. He almost always stayed late to HELP his teacher because he lived practically across the street from the school. When he finally left the school, there were two boys waiting just outside the door. Suddenly, out of nowhere it seemed, they came from behind Jason and tripped him, just as he was coming to the front steps leading down to the sidewalk. Jason tumbled down the steps, and it’s just amazing that he didn’t break his arm or something. He did, however, get scraped up pretty badly.

The two boys started laughing, that is until they turned around and found themselves face to face with Mr. Evans, the principal.

Well, the two boys’ parents were called, and the boys were suspended from school. Then Jason’s dad called the other two dads, and sufficiently impressed on them and their sons the whole “HEROES are HELPFUL, not hurtful” thing, and you know what? One of the boys actually listened. He apologized to Jason and eventually became his friend. He even started following Jason’s example of HELPING others instead of hurting them. He started becoming a HERO instead.
