Good morning. Morning, Ken. So we're back first training session of 2020 summer. We ended the spring rule session last month, about four weeks ago where we did, I don't know, 24 webinars and had, and you name it. We had a festival on giving us some great training from NFL down to division two to high school, high school experts from like Bob Arknown from Gannett, right from Alabama, just giving us some, some great, great training to the New Mexico high school officials.

Dennis Barela (43s):

But this morning we have two gentlemen from Albuquerque and from Las Cruces, they're high school football coaches that have a great to train us in defensive schemes and how they see the, the game of football through a defensive coaches perspective. So it's going to be interesting. This is the coaches opportunity to really talk to officials and kind of get everybody on the same page.

Dennis Barela (1m 18s):

So with that, Ken, are you there?

Ken Adent (1m 22s):

Yeah. Good morning, Dennis morning, everybody. Thanks for tuning in. It's been quite the spring session that we had, and I hope you guys, if he didn't get a chance to watch these live hit behind the flag website, AFOA ref website, and you guys can pull up all these previous webcasts, but today I'm really excited for, because we'd been talking about learning defensive schemes and defensive formations to make us better officials and really excited that these two coaches jumped on the first gentlemen who's gonna is on before I introduce.

Ken Adent (2m 4s):

And are you there? I can't tell. Okay. If not, no, we've got coach West Hurley from the <inaudible> high school defensive coordinator. I just want to say thank you for the opportunity and thank you guys for, for all that you do for the game and, and allowing us to do it.

Wes Hurley (4m 4s):

So let's get started here. Can you guys see that? Yeah, we can see your screen. I don't know if I can hear him. Okay. Awesome. All right. So, so our basic defensive scheme is a four to five. That's four downline men, two inside linebackers, and then five DBS.

Wes Hurley (4m 37s):

We have two strong safety is on either side. Those guys kind of play almost like a hybrid of an outside linebackers slash strong safety position. And we bring pressure with that. We, we bring five to six guys more than 50% of the time. Usually it's just five. We don't bring a lot of six man pressures, but as we'll talk about in a little bit, some of that is, Is situationally dependent on down in distance, gain momentum, things of that nature.

Wes Hurley (5m 12s):

Some thing I feel like we do really well at, at Kuaba defensively is our Cub Ridge is aggressive. RDPs are usually very aggressive with, with rerouting hands-on receiver. There's, things like that. The majority of the time we are running a man free coverage or some variation of covered three different things like that.

Wes Hurley (5m 44s):

And something we preach to our kids. This is our kind of our defensive mantra is when we arrive, we will arrive violently. And we actually expand that to the kids. Like essentially just another way of saying like, if, when do something do it all the way. So we try to apply that to the classroom, to, to fundraising, to whatever they're doing. And like, look, if you're going to show up, you show up, you know, I'm in the weight room, whatever it is. So when we arrive, we're going to arrive with purpose, we're going to ride violently and we want people to know that we're there.

Wes Hurley (6m 20s):

So that's just kind of our, our defensive mentality and base very basic overview of, of what we run on situationally, just me as a play caller first and second down, we stayed pretty vanilla. Most of the time we'll play with coverage a little bit, you know, blitz a little bit here and there, but, but we're really trying to grind out first and second down. Most of the time we'll, we'll play a base defense unless we're looking for a change in momentum or a big play, or, you know, we've got a young quarterback and we feel like we've got him on tilt or, or something along those lines.

Wes Hurley (7m 5s):

And we'll, we'll, we'll start bringing a little more pressure at that point. Well, so we do have two different types of blitzes, third and third and fourth and short, which we define as less than four yards, we'll bring a run blitz. Most of the time, we usually do that in the A's and the a and B gaps, the, the insight gaps, but not always. It just depends on, on game playing game plan, as far as how the game is going, where their weapons are, where we think they're going to go.

Wes Hurley (7m 41s):

Things of that nature. Third and long, we kind of have two philosophies in the first option is will, will drop more men into coverage or we'll bring more pressure to rush that through some of that depends on what we've been seeing out of them. There's a lot of teams that like to max protect against us. And so with that, when you bring more men into max protection, you don't get there sometimes.

Wes Hurley (8m 12s):

And so your coverage can suffer. So if we have a team that's max protecting a lot, we'll drop into coverage and just let those guys sit back there. If they're releasing a lot of guys into routes and stuff like that, they don't have that max protection max protection will probably bring more than income block a lot of times to get to the off. And as far as just, you know, situational play calling, it really depends on, on where you are on the field.

Wes Hurley (8m 42s):

You know, as we get backed up against our own goal line, we're going to become more aggressive. You know, the, the field gets cut down, you know, if we're up and trying to protect lead, we may play off a little bit and make sure we don't give up the big play things like, you know, just simple things like that, things to that you guys might know like, Oh, in this situation they're pro you know, they might be looking to do this, you know, and I included some clips of that.

Wes Hurley (9m 13s):

So this is against Manzano second and nine. And, and this isn't a third quarter. We had this quarterback kind of Rattled a little bit. I felt so we bring some edge pressure and get there. You could see the backer kind of creep up right before he goes off the edge at the top of the screen. So that's just an example of, you know, Hey, we think we can get there. We think we can cost some, some havoc are defensive ends.

Wes Hurley (9m 44s):

If you look at the defensive end up top, he almost never goes inside. He's always playing outside contained. So when our defensive ends making strong inside move like that, it's, it becomes really difficult and an offensive tackle because he's used to him being on that outside shoulder, all games. So you can see he gets good pressure there as well. So, and you could see our coverage, the corner at the bottom, where we're definitely in a covered three, we're playing much softer than we usually play at this point.

Wes Hurley (10m 14s):

But we'll talk about the coverage behind it a little bit. Here's here's the end zone view kind of see the, the inside move and in the back or off the edge there, This is against elbow. And this is just an example of, he was trying to do this because we run that man free coverage teams really like to put us in most shit. And so you can see what they're trying to do. What Eldorado is trying to do here is just get that extra guy out of the box.

Wes Hurley (10m 45s):

They're they're having a hard time blocking us and stuff like that. So they, that motion doesn't really mean anything other than just getting him out of the box. And so you'll see, I know you guys see, give him a second E commerce and things like that.

Wes Hurley (11m 16s):

This is actually a really good play by the, the D end up top tasting that down backside. Am I good now? Yeah, we got you now, man. Free coverage. I'm sorry. You lost me there. Can you explain that? You guys hear me? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. So man free.

Wes Hurley (11m 48s):

And I'm going to go over that if we, so if we look at, let me stop this right here. So if we look at, this is actually covered three right now, but man free, what we usually do is because we have the five DBS one, two, three, four, five, every, every guy is manned up with a guy and then we have a free safety in the back. That's kind of, he's just playing center field is what he's doing.

Wes Hurley (12m 17s):

So this guy at the back doesn't have a man, unless we're bringing, if we bring a six man pressure, he usually has somebody that's when we're playing just a straight covers zero man, man defense. But man free means there's that free safety behind them. Excellent. Thank you. No problem. Good question. So here you can see, you can see, especially our corner at the bottom has really given us away. This is I'm Eldorado in the fourth quarter.

Wes Hurley (12m 48s):

So we're up a little bit. So we're, we're definitely, this is one of those situations where we're still bringing a little bit of pressure, but you can see our RDBMS are playing back. This is definitely a covered three. Our free safety should be closer to the middle of the field. Dropped a pick there, but high school kids. Right. But again, sometimes when we bring pressure, especially late in the game like that, if we're going to bring pressure off the edge like that, we're going to play as a soft coverage behind it to make sure we don't get burnt deep.

Wes Hurley (13m 31s):

This is another, you could see more emotion and us adjusting to it. This is another blitz off the edge, third and 12. And so, you know, third and 12, we've got a sophomore quarterback. This particular game was really windy. So, so we're going to put people in his face and make him make a, make a tough throw. You can also see our coverage a little better here with, with the rerouting, the collisions and things like that, which we'll talk about, but Yeah, we got there.

Wes Hurley (14m 5s):

We didn't get them, but that's enough to get him on the move and get him flustered and probably the same blitz. I think we saw against Manzano. You see it a little better CR or backer Walk up and then off he goes and you know, we miss him, but So that's third and 12. That's, you know, we got off the field right there. So that's, that's an easy play, You know, once, once we get there and get, get those guys off the field.

Wes Hurley (14m 38s):

Let's see this, this is a six man pressure. So this is again, right? The same game, third and nine. We got that sophomore quarterback still. So we're going to send some pressure, light him up a little bit, get him in there. So you see, we do a really bad job here of adjusting to the motion. So the motion comes across and we don't adjust to it. So we ended up with a wide open guy sitting right here. Luckily he drops that ball, but you can see, we don't adjust with the motion.

Wes Hurley (15m 11s):

We send six and we get there, but he misses gets the ball off that should've been in a completion. But again, third and nine, that's one of those situations where we're going to bring, we're going to bring extra guys in a situation like this. So I think that's all I offer situ. Yeah.

Dennis Barela (15m 29s):

I have a question. So you keep saying, you know, referring to the quarterback end and you know, he's a sophomore quarterback. Would your defense scheme change? If there was a senior out there that say, Hey, won the championship last year and he's just really picking you guys apart.

Wes Hurley (15m 49s):

Absolutely. You know, if that's a guy that's going to sit back there and make that I throw, you know, and like I said, the quarter, the quarterback here does a hell of a job of getting the ball to the receiver. But typically, you know, senior quarterbacks, they have a little more Moxie about them. They'll sit back there and make that throw and take the hit. And, and if that happens, now, we're sending guys, guys are open, windows are bigger. So it does depend on the kid. You know, we did the same thing against cebolla last year, they, they started that freshmen.

Wes Hurley (16m 23s):

So the young quarterbacks who aren't used to the speed of RC ball, we like to try to speed them up a little bit. You know, even if we don't get there, we want them in their heads about, Oh God, here they come. You know, just, just to give them something to think about, but it definitely changes based on, based on the age of the quarterback and you know, how experienced a quarterback is, you know, if we played this kid this year, we're probably not gonna blitz him as much because he's, he's a really good runner and he's, he makes really good decisions now.

Wes Hurley (16m 60s):

But luckily in this game he was just a sophomore. So that helped us.

Dennis Barela (17m 4s):

Right? No, I get it. I just need to stop here. I just wanted to clarify that can, you know, cause you know, blitz in the quarterback from Rio Rancho last year, Isaiah Chavis, that kid can run and, and you know, you just outrun your line, black Packers. But so, so as officials, you know, when we're tonight, pregame, we kind of want to know and take a look at, at who's on the field as far as quarterbacks and what the defense would like try to do to that quarterback.

Wes Hurley (17m 39s):

Absolutely. And Isaiah was, Isaiah was a hell. I mean, we, there were a couple of times we got to him and hit him right in his jaw. And he, he delivered the throw and then right up and each, you know, it's, it is really the difference in just that experience. You know, there's a, there's a big difference between a 15 year old and a 17 year old and, and in high school football. So that's why you always see senior heavy teams usually make a deep runs, have good seasons, things like that.

Wes Hurley (18m 12s):

So good question. I think I'm doing okay on time. The last thing I want to talk about is, Oh, so this is where we actually change our coverage. This is another situational here. You can see us in too high. We've got two safeties back there. We don't do that a lot, but this is right before halftime. They're going into to, to try to score it's first and 10, they're an empty, right?

Wes Hurley (18m 44s):

So there's no running back. So what we've done is we've replaced one of our linebackers with another DB, with another safety. And so our box is really light. But we're playing coverage behind it. So this is, this is one of those things where we don't necessarily, we still get to the quarterback, but in this, the philosophy behind this, isn't, we're not sending any extra guys we're just rushing for.

Wes Hurley (19m 14s):

And you can see we've got coverage across the board with two guys playing deep halves. . Trying to essentially protect the end zone before the end of the half. So, and you can see the coverage is pretty tight there. So, so let's talk a little bit about our man free. This is what we coach our kids to do. So our kids collision and reroute the receiver at five yards.

Wes Hurley (19m 47s):

If they get a pass read, we tell them not to take their eyes off their receiver. Okay. Our, our DB should not be looking back at the ball ever. And this has been a, we've actually had a refs tell us that they, they threw the flag because the DB wasn't looking back and you know, we have an exchange or whatever, but we, we coach our kids not to look back after we reroute. We tell them to play through the hands. So that means that that receiver's hands go up your hands, go up.

Wes Hurley (20m 18s):

So we, we absolutely tell them, do not look at it. Look back for the bar unless they are completely in face. So what we teach, what we coach our kids is if you are a hip to hip with that receiver, I mean, you are his shadow. You are on him. Then you can look back for the ball. Other than that, if you're out of phase by half a step, you have to play through the hands and play and keep your eyes on the receiver. If the ball. So our whole is creating very small windows for a receiver, for a quarterback to put the ball into.

Wes Hurley (20m 54s):

If the ball hits the hands of receiver, this is where the ARIDE violently comes in. We strip it out while securing the tackle. So we, we teach our kids until that whistle blows. It's not a catch. So even if the receiver gets his hands on the ball, we're going to strip and, and punch at it to try to knock it out. And, and I was talking to coach <inaudible> about this the other day, we, we really preach, do not grab and do not hold.

Wes Hurley (21m 24s):

We actually, we, every couple of weeks we will take a DB who who's got called for holding, or won't stop doing it in practice or something. And we'll put tennis balls in his hands and we'll duct tape him to where he has to play the whole practice with these duct tape clubs, to where he can't grab anybody. Mmm. So, you know, when you're, when you're creating that contact in that collision, I think it's natural for kids to, to want to grab. So that's, that's a habit and almost an instinctual thing that we try to coach our DBS not to, not to do.

Wes Hurley (21m 60s):

And you know what, the sideline we play. There's a lot of times, you know, we'll get a flag or something, there'll be coach. I...

https://behind-the-flag.captivate.fm/episode/defensive-schemes-

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/6bc6f8d6-0aeb-45aa-ae16-278b2a7f3f3d/4u46y9sogjblbqfe5ls3-dfk.jpg"/>
Dennis Barela and Ken Adent

<itunes:duration>01:13:14</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>2</itunes:season><itunes:episode>23</itunes:episode><itunes:season>2</itunes:season><podcast:episode>23</podcast:episode><podcast:season>2</podcast:season><itunes:summary>Defensive Schemes</itunes:summary><itunes:author>Dennis Barela and Ken Adent</itunes:author>

Season 1 Spring 2020 Recap
<itunes:title>2020 Spring Study Session Recap</itunes:title>

2020 Spring Study Session Recap

Dennis Barela (3s):

Welcome to behind the flag podcast. I don't know about you, but Oh my gosh, the topics, the speakers, it was, it was absolutely amazing. I think I have no less than five, six pages of notes. Haven't had time to go through and organize them. But what did you think?

Dennis Barela (1m 25s):

And here we go. After that spring session, I think we did about 24 webinars that turned into podcast and it just made the time fly by 24, 24 webinars in about six weeks I believe, or less. And the speakers we had, which was just crazy. So we had to take a break.

Ken Adent (1m 47s):

Yeah. We also have to be honest, it didn't start off as that as our goal, it started off as a couple of guys missing football, talking one on one or to talk more football and just, you know, get other guys involved with that passion that we have. And it just blossomed.

Dennis Barela (2m 5s):

Right. And I was surprised on everybody. We re reached out to agreed to, to bring some training to New Mexico. It was, I expected everybody to be on board, but not to the fashion that it was, it was every, it was infectious almost.

Dennis Barela (2m 29s):

Right. And so we're getting ready to start our summer study sessions and, you know, to try to follow up what we did the Springs and it'd be difficult. But I think after brainstorming for a month, I think we got some pretty good ideas of what we'll want to do for the, for the summer. I'm just going for it here. So

Ken Adent (4m 22s):

Let's see. I'm going to go.

Dennis Barela (4m 24s):

Let's go 300. Which one? The official business. Right? You want official business for 300? No, no, no. Let's, let's change it up. What should I know? Yeah, let's do it. Why not? Give me a question. Okay. This is a block against opponent. Let me just free thing, free ball, this thing. And we're going to just go for it. Yeah.

3 (5m 34s):

Okay.

Ken Adent (5m 39s):

So in the background, maybe while I'm thinking of what rule you can do the non

Dennis Barela (5m 44s):

Yeah. All right. Well, he got that one, right? Yeah. That was a pretty simple one. But you know, it's kind of talk about what we did in the spring and kind of recap a little bit before we start the summer session, where do you start? Yeah, I mean, well, when, when we decided to do this, our main goal was bringing consistency across the state, you know? And we were like, well, how do we do that?

Dennis Barela (6m 14s):

We just had to start talking football and just start bringing in clinicians and trying to get the same concept to every official in the state of New Mexico. And it's kind of blossomed from there, but that's, that's where we started.

Ken Adent (6m 29s):

Well, you know, the state clinic was supposed to bring everybody and it does technically it brings everybody together. But you know, you only have, you know, a couple of topics that come up. It's, it's honestly, it's not enough time to bring guys from, you know, the Clovis to Rio Rancho, to Farmington, to Las Cruces. You know, we got such a big state and there was such a disconnect from region to region and, you know, having everybody involved or, or potentially involved in one platform to speak out and hear guys from down South, talk to guys up North, and are you guys doing it this way?

Ken Adent (7m 11s):

Are you doing it this way? And what do you guys have on this? And how do you, you know, keep coaches off the sideline, you know, and on and on and on. And, you know, having all these presenters come on and give everybody an opportunity to kind of learn from one platform. It's I think it's been invaluable for the state and I know it's never been done before, so I'm kinda glad that we're trailblazers and, and we're getting positive feedback,

Dennis Barela (7m 36s):

Right. And the state clinic happens once a year and, you know, as high school official, you know, we started studying maybe in July when we first started July, August. And then we started with doing some summer sessions classroom during June, July before the state clinic at the enum A's office. And then we started with, and then we went to weekly, weekly quizzes, I guess, test questions, video breakdown that we would send out once a week during the season with Esteban baka for Santa Fe, shout out to a state one.

Dennis Barela (8m 15s):

And so we said, well, we're not doing anything in the spring. And then, you know, we said, well, why don't we do a podcast? And then, well, you know, let's try webinars first. And so we started putting together some webinars and we said, well, let's reach out to land Clark. He's a New Mexico resident. Maybe he'll help us out. And, you know, he was the first one to say yes, as a, as a NFL official.

Dennis Barela (8m 48s):

And he talked about game management and it just took off from there. But I think, I think Mr. Clark had a big influence on other people following in his footsteps and helping us at that level. But I think one of the big takeaways that I had this spring, and one of the main comments that kind of stayed with me and I think stayed with some other officials and with NM Ali's office is when Scott Novak said a mentor is someone who is willing to train another official of group officials, do some take someday, take his job.

Dennis Barela (9m 29s):

And I'm not saying we're mentors or, or we're trying to be somebody's mentor, but to provide training to other officials, did it become better? I think that's kind of just stayed with me that comment the whole spring going, you know, that's, that was a driving factor and just keep doing these things. Some of the other topics, you know, after that was how prepared are you? You know, we kind of talked about, well, how comfortable are you on the field?

Dennis Barela (10m 2s):

And, and a lot of the clinicians said, it's not about being comfortable. It's about how prepared I am. Right? And so without those two things, nothing else would fall in place. You know, you have to be prepared to manage a game. You have to be prepared pair to talk to and communicate with your other officials on your crew and with the head coaches and you know, that went into, okay.

Dennis Barela (10m 35s):

So once I get there and I'm communicating, I have three member that those assistant coaches that are on the sidelines behind us yelling, we have three member that just because they're assistant coaches today, that only means that they're going to be a head coach tomorrow, somewhere, right? The way we treat them today on the field as assistant coach can affect how we communicate with them tomorrow as a head coach.

Ken Adent (11m 3s):

Yeah, exactly. It would kind of, there's so many things that stick out from me, but one-on-one to touch base on is Mike Contrares. The army coordinator of officials said, if you're not trying to be the best back judge or line judge or headlines men in your group or your conference, then you're on your way down. You know, Dennis and I are certainly not the best officials in the state of New Mexico or even in our association.

Ken Adent (11m 36s):

And we don't advertise to be that, but what are, you know, the common theme is we want to get better. We have an extreme passion for football. We do other sports too, but football is just, you know, there's just such a passion for it. And I wasn't getting enough information, education, communication. So we started our own thing and I got a, we got to throw a shout out to a rule 11, if you guys don't know, they're there podcasts, it's, it's all geared towards college officials, but you know, these guys are just as passionate and, you know, so it kinda gave us inspiration on why isn't anybody doing this for high school.

Ken Adent (12m 21s):

And we kind of looked around there, there really wasn't there wasn't anybody doing it. And it's like, why not us? And so we pretty much put this thing together with shoelaces and some duct tape and, and it's really blossomed. And the feedback has been fantastic. And I have learned, I've learned so much over the last couple of months, so I'm glad to get back into the summer session. And, and we've got a cool thing coming up, Dennis, tell us about the coaches we got coming in for the first session of, of summer.

Dennis Barela (12m 56s):

Yeah. And so on Saturday, June 20th, we decided that we wanted to do a webinar on defensive schemes. And so that role dried into, well, who's our customer as a football official and a basketball official told me, or told a group of us doing a clinic a few weeks ago that we have to remember as officials officiating as a business.

Dennis Barela (13m 28s):

And our customer is a student athlete and the coach and the head coaches and trust us and relinquish their power that they have over their teams to the officials when we take jurisdiction on the field. And so I took that and I'm like, wow, that was all something I never thought of before. And then when Ken said, Hey, we need to do something with defensive schemes. I think that kind of just rolled into, okay, well we need the head coaches or defensive coordinators to come in and teach us what they're trying to do as coaches on the field at any given point of the game.

Dennis Barela (14m 11s):

You know, not just first and 10, Hey, you know, yeah. We want to stop the offense from making touchdowns, but how are we going to do that? You know, cover three blitzes zones, anything that they can teach us as officials to get better and to put us in the correct position on the field to make the right call and the way we sold it to, to the coaches is, Hey, if you're not willing to come and teach high school officials and we get a call wrong, and we're asking you for your help, there's not more, much more we could do other than to ask you to come teach us on what you're trying to do as head coach at the high school level.

Dennis Barela (14m 55s):

And so I, I think that they are very excited. They put together a great presentation. And so on Saturday, we're going to really hear what high school officials or what high school head coaches and defensive coordinators in the state of New Mexico. One's from LA LA COVID high school in Albuquerque and other head coaches from Centennial down in Las Cruces. And so they have two different types of philosophy in what they're trying to do.

Dennis Barela (15m 26s):

And they were gonna really give us some insight during this webinar on, this is what this is, this defense looks like on the field to help us become better officials.

Ken Adent (15m 39s):

All right. While you were talking about that, I was looking back through the lineup we had in the spring. Some of these names, you know, Dean, I'm going to drop names, okay, go ahead and drop her. But you know, Tyree Walton, the big 12 back judge, I mean talking about field vision and you know, you've got, I mean, look at these names, Frank Valar talking about, you know, strive for excellence. It's, you know, how did we get these guys?

Ken Adent (16m 9s):

I mean, how did we get on this, this, this role? And it's it, I'm still kind of, I look back and think, you know, it's, it's kind of surreal, honestly, what we put together in, in just a short amount of time and, and have this kind of lineup. I mean, it's,

Dennis Barela (16m 28s):

You know, it's, it's officiating as a small community. And I didn't really realize that until probably two months ago on how small it really is, because, you know, we asked Todd Morris from Clovis, Hey Todd, do you know anybody that's willing to give us a webinar or breakdown on X, Y, and Z. And I remember what I asked him, but he says, yeah, I know Brad Rogers, he's an NFL referee. He could give us a great class.

Dennis Barela (16m 59s):

And I remember meeting mr. Rogers in Dallas through the Lonestar conference, on a clinic back in January, I'm like, Oh yeah, I had no idea that Todd was good friends with them. And he just said, let me text him. You know? And then I'm like, well, maybe somebody else knows, right? No, somebody until I asked Leonard Longhorn from Farmington, he goes, Oh, I know Frank velar.

Dennis Barela (17m 29s):

He was my mentor at SASA last year. Let me text him. Oh, I know Roscoe two miles an hour. Let me text him. I'm sure he'll be willing to give us a class. We

Ken Adent (17m 40s):

Got to Sarah Thomas, Sarah Thomas came on the show. Remember?

Dennis Barela (17m 43s):

So bruh. So Todd went through Brad, so it was just one, one, you know, one person away. And, and Brad said, yeah, Sarah would love to come on and give us, give us a class on learning the basics on line of scrimmage. And so

Ken Adent (18m 2s):

She was excellent too, by the way, I mean, just the way she spoke about her trials and tribulations moving up through the ranks and you know, how she deals with coaches and, you know, the respect she had to gain. And it was, it was a really cool hour with her.

Dennis Barela (18m 16s):

Yeah. So it was just, it was just asking people, Hey, do you know anybody that's willing to give us a class? I mean, we asked Dana Pappas, a commissioner of officials here in New Mexico. And she was like, you guys want me to get Tony? Kurento we're like, what? You know, Tony? Oh, can we text him? And he came on and gave us a course on managing adversity. You know, it was, this is this crazy on how people were more than willing to come and, and, and train high school officials from the level that they're, I mean, some of these guys at the top of football officiating in NFL and not just NFL, but official supervisors in the NFL, like Dean Blandino, Mike para.

Ken Adent (19m 5s):

Yeah. Do you give up their time and come and talk to a couple of high school guys?

Dennis Barela (19m 8s):

Yeah. I mean, it was just so, so from that we, we said, well, how are, you know, we're always wondering, how are we doing? Are we making a dent in training? How, how are we being perceived? And is this really going anywhere? Is it just two guys getting the best training that they can and nobody else is listening. And so no, we checked the internet and you know, the podcast keeps track on who's listening and where, and so as of this morning, you know, we're in 10 different countries on the podcast, the us, UK, the France, Mexico, Denmark, Germany, Brazil pull in Italy, Sweden, and I'm like Brazil.

Dennis Barela (19m 57s):

Apparently they have American football and all these countries that somebody is interested in and interested in high school rules and FHS. And so it takes a deep, a step further and, and it breaks down, you know, we're in different 22 different States. You know, we're almost halfway there as far as being in all, all the, all the United States. But, you know, we check the YouTube page and cause all the webinars are downloaded on, on the YouTube page at AFOA underscore RAF.

Dennis Barela (20m 31s):

And

Ken Adent (20m 32s):

You've been translated to hearing impaired, Dennis got that done.

Dennis Barela (20m 35s):

Most of them are now they're in the process, but they're being transcribed for the hearing impaired backed. We have over 1300 views over 55 subscribers. And you know, we started with the first one, April 14th. How long ago was that? Was it really two months ago? Yeah. Two and a half. Yeah. No, not even two and a half months. Two months ago. You should ask me that on jeopardy. Yeah.

Dennis Barela (21m 5s):

Yeah. So, you know, we, and then, and then we became interested like, well, which podcast was the best? We're doing something a little bit different this year, where, where we have get it right. I'm official here in New Mexico, out of Albuquerque.

Dennis Barela (37s):

And I had met Barb or known last year at the front range camp out of Colorado. There's nothing illegal about that. As long as that contact is legal, A receiver has possession of the ball. The defender has taken a look at him. He shoves him while you're still in midair. So his first contact is on the sideline. So that makes that an incomplete pass for some of you veteran officials out there.

Bob Arnone (5m 15s):

I think it was maybe four or five years ago that the rule used to be in high school. That if we thought that he would have landed in bounds, we could have ruled that a complete catch. So fortunately in my mind, anyway, fortunately, the Federation changed that rule so that if you get pushed and you leaned out of bounds, it's an incomplete pass. So we've got all that going on. So we're going to step back now and we'll go look at his airborne catch.

Bob Arnone (5m 52s):

So what's different this time. Is it well not on the sideline will work in a goal line going in and we'll do the play through on this. You're going to see this receiver go into the end zone, turn around, catch a pass. And the defender's going to hit him. And then he drives him out. Let's go ahead and watch that one more time. So what happens in this situation we'll step through it.

Bob Arnone (6m 27s):

So there are, the player has possession of the ball. He's above the end zone. We can see the plane where the foremost portion of the ball, there's clearly a inside the end zone. And this is when that defender contacts them And then he drives him out. So now this is the first time that that receiver contacts the ground. But according to when we look at forward progress, that airborne receiver gets credit for his forward progress.

Bob Arnone (7m 1s):

When that defender contacts. So for a progress is inside the end zone. That's when he's contacted by a defensive guy. So there we have a touchdown, I comparison, which you're going to see on the right side. We'll put this on play through It's. That receiver goes in and he kind of comes out on his own before that a defender hits them, take a look at this one. Again, he goes in, he starts coming out his momentum type some out of the end zone.

Bob Arnone (7m 36s):

And that's when that defender hits them, we'll step through it. So you can see how that looks. Step-by-step Possession of the ball forward point of the ball. Doesn't day break the plane. He's still in the air. The fender has not contacted him. There's momentum brings them out of the end zone. That's when that defender contacts them. That's when he also contacts the grounds. And now we have the completed catch and we have the defender that, that hit him while being an airborne.

Bob Arnone (8m 7s):

After being airborne, We roll over here. You can see that that receiver has contacted the ground. And then when he completes the action, we have the four most pointed the ball that's inside the one yard line. That would be the forward progress. That's where that bottle would be spotted. So even though that receiver caught the ball while he was in the air above the end zone, well, not going to give him a touchdown in that regard. Now, for those of you do that officiate at the college level, I understand that that's going to be a touchdown either way.

Bob Arnone (8m 46s):

So remember if you're working a game on a Friday night with high school rules or Saturday used an NCAA rules, Oh, you don't want to get these two mixed up. Now we're going to look at something store to related, but something you have to think about before you make a ruling, I will go back into forward progress here. And what we're going to see this time is white.

Bob Arnone (9m 16s):

24. Who's been burned on these plays. Finally decides he's gonna make his move. So we'll put this on a play through, he steps up. He catches the ball, he's in the air. So now he's sort of an airborne receiver. And then that blew 82, who was the intended receiver, contacts him while he's still in the air and jobs him out.

Bob Arnone (9m 46s):

So what you need to watch out for is this. He's got the ball clearly in possession. He's above the end zone for the progress of the ball is about a half yard inside. And that's when he's contacted by that a player. But now you have to remember what the definition of forward progress it's relative to the opponent's goal line. So this would not be a touchback instead, the ball's going to be spotted and given to be they're inside the one yard line.

Bob Arnone (10m 22s):

So I, even though those look the same forward progress is going to be different based on the direction that that team needs to go. So, any questions on any of that? Anybody have anything in the chat box and want me to show anything else relative to this? This was all that was scheduled to talk about tonight. We can talk about a few other things.

Bob Arnone (10m 52s):

I have a few wish

Dennis Barela (10m 53s):

I have a question just to clarify if that defender a white 24 intercepts the ball in the field, sat the one yard line in his momentum takes them into the end zone. What's the result of the play.

Bob Arnone (11m 14s):

Yeah. That's one where the momentum rule goes into effect. You should have a beanbag down on the ground there and yeah, that will be baseball at the one yard line or whatever he contacted the ground.

Dennis Barela (11m 33s):

But that is not covered under the airborne receiver. That's under the momentum roof

Bob Arnone (11m 40s):

That that's under the momentum rule. Yeah. There in rule eight. So yeah, once he, once he hits the ground, you have a completed catch there, but yeah, you're right. If there's paints and back into the end zone, then you go ahead and bring that ball out to where he caught that ball. So the momentum rule goes into fact inside the five yard line. I'm now going back to one of the spring webinars that, that you all had.

Bob Arnone (12m 15s):

There was a discussion about that. This gets into a philosophy thing that says, well, good news B is going to get the ball, but are you going to really spot that ball inside the one yard line or anything like that? You know, that's something that y'all have to kind of decide at the crew level at the association level. We just gonna really read that as a momentum, if it's inside the one yard line and put them in a tricky spot, but the rule is inside the five yard line, you have that momentum situation able to that momentum situation.

Bob Arnone (13m 1s):

I think Ken wanted to do some workups on this,

Dennis Barela (13m 4s):

Right? And so as, as far as format crew and say, this, this place starts 30 yards out. If you could go back to that screen, then you stopped sharing Mmm. In a format crew, you have the wings that are responsible for that goal line, even 30 yards out because we don't have a back judge. And as far as helping them decide whether That ball was in or out of The end zone on an interception to give B A, either a touchback or placing it at the one yard line, does anybody have any thought on What we're telling a format crew on where to spot that ball on an interception?

Dennis Barela (14m 1s):

You can unmute yourself Or a back judge.

Bob Arnone (14m 16s):

Oh, well, let me, what I tell folks, whenever I've, I'm doing my classes and all, is that, that there's a couple of things that you need to be armed with on any game day. And if you decide you're going to rule that one way or the other being calm, think about what you saw and then being able to explain it. So for coach wants to argue that, no, we, we want to have that ball.

Bob Arnone (14m 47s):

You know, if we just gave up that ball, we want the other team to have it inside one yard line. That's when you say, well, coach, I'm sorry. I don't. Yeah. From what I saw, he didn't have full possession of that until he fell into the end zone. So if you can talk through the rules and explain why you're deciding what you've got, that that's, that's half the battle. Now, if you decide that no he's going to be inside the, the one yard line that's when you, you tell that coach, well, congratulations coach that you ball right now.

Bob Arnone (15m 23s):

But according to the momentum rule, he had possession of the ball and his momentum brought it back into the, into the end zone. That's not a touchback. He's going to get the ball there inside the one yard line. So, you know, on a four man crew, that, that, that that's a difficult situation that you wind up having. There, it is what it is, but, but watch that play, process it in your mind. What, what happened there?

Bob Arnone (15m 53s):

No, that there could be two different outcomes on that and be able to explain what you know, what your decision is.

Dennis Barela (16m 3s):

Okay. Thank you. Does anybody have anything that has worked in that situation where you've explained to the coach within just a few seconds? Cause you know, we all know we don't have a lot of time to tell the coach what the rule is, but as far as key words that you used on a play like this to, to explain to the official why or to the coach, why he ruled it a certain way, Let me see.

Dennis Barela (16m 36s):

We check the chat room. So in the cat room it says four person airborne receiver sideline. You mentioned the umpire could help on the catch. How do you think the umpire can help?

Bob Arnone (16m 59s):

Yeah, my, my gas and that's what it is just a guess. Is that, do you, for, for that kind of situation, do you expect the wing official to be, to be down beyond those players, closer to that pylon, Where do you expect them to really wind up kind of behind those players? See if I'm thinking, if you're behind that. I mean, you know, those, those spent that receiver's gonna take off at the snap that wing official has to read the play.

Bob Arnone (17m 35s):

So already he's at a little bit of a disadvantage that, that a 16 year old kid already has a jumpstart on and going down the sideline there. So my expectation is unless you got you, bolt is a wing official. They're going to be behind that play. And your wing officials only gonna see is very likely only going to see whether the first foot landed in bounds or out of bounds. So he may not, he may have to guess whether that player had possession.

Bob Arnone (18m 8s):

I'm thinking that if the umpire has the opportunity to turn and look, he might at least be able to give her a ruling on whether the player was in possession of it. Oh bye.

Dennis Barela (18m 20s):

Maybe not. Right. He's not, he's not going to have a good view on if he was inside or outside the goal line. So

Bob Arnone (18m 27s):

Yeah. Yeah. So that's a, so you have the wing official, worried about, you know, you know, about whether it was inside or out, and then maybe the young park can help with, if it's a short pass with a longer pass, you might get a look at it again. You know, you all have mentioned it before for man. It's not the most optimum way of doing things, but just be ready to deal with that. If it's, if it's a sideline catch coach, you know, from what I saw, I felt that

Dennis Barela (19m 0s):

Clara had possession of the ball. The first book was in bounds. Right here we go. And I think, I think one of the officials or a back judge explained it pretty well here. So I think the opposite wing has to help with Ford progress. And when we use Crossfield mechanics, so the, you will have a hard time helping with that other than just a catch, no catch, but field mechanics, whether whether they were inside or outside the end zone is, is, was I understanding that comment correctly?

Dennis Barela (19m 37s):

Shake your head or yes or no? Yeah. Okay. And so there was another question in here about if the wide receiver goes up over the back with contact to make the catch in the air, would that be OPI based on that scenario, you put, you put up with the defense, making the interception in the end zone, whether he came in, I guess, down in end zone or down in the field to play at the one they're asking, I guess the question is what was conscious constitute OPI in that situation.

Bob Arnone (20m 23s):

Hi, I hate to phrase it that way, but, but think about what the whole definition of OPI is because it starts for the offense when the ball is snapped, but then the restriction stop when the ball is touched. So as long as that offensive player, isn't climbing over the back of that defender before he touches that ball, once that ball is touched, then the restrictions are lifted.

Bob Arnone (21m 3s):

So it's, you know, that's about a bang bang as you're going to get, but, but it gets to the whole understanding of the rules and be able to communicate both in your mind into the coach and to anyone else that, you know, this is how I saw it. He was not typing that defender. He wasn't interfering with it, the Fender's ability to, to catch that ball. And he, that player touched a ball before he made contact with anyone else, passenger interference restrictions or, or out the window at that point.

Bob Arnone (21m 46s):

So there's no flag for that. Now it's a function of, okay, who's got possession of the ball. Are they in the end zone or, or is he landing out on the field of play? Yeah, that's I think that's a lock you have to process in your mind. So try to think about what you saw process as quickly as you can take a deep breath and say, no flag, no flag touchdown, or next down, whatever it happens to be.

Bob Arnone (22m 29s):

Yeah. But anything having to do with interference, that's all judgment call on our part. So think about, you know, what you look for, how consistent are you and what you allow those players to do. Hopefully you're you have that same consistency as you go from game to game, but more importantly, you have that same consistency from the first quarter to the end of the fourth or to the end of the game, if you're in overtime.

Dennis Barela (23m 2s):

Okay. And I can just got a text message. Can you, can you run through those three scenarios one more time on your software of the sideline catch and the, the a goal line catch for offense and defense.

Bob Arnone (23m 18s):

Okay. Okay. My shirt, my showing the screen here. Yes. Okay. This one is probably going to be the defensive one just because it was still up. Yeah. There's the interception. And then he's out. We'll do step through on it.

Bob Arnone (23m 51s):

He's got the ball, but he's still in the air. I remember, you know, the whole thing about the airborne player were worried about forward progress. So forward progress for the defense is going on in the opposite direction. So that's why we're not giving them a touchback in this particular scenario here, because his forward progress is off to the left, not off to the right into the, into the end zone.

Bob Arnone (24m 24s):

And let me go back to do the airborne catch again here, the defender contact, somebody is in the end zone and drives them out. I think comparison, the offensive player comes out on his own And we'll step through those.

Bob Arnone (25m 3s):

Again, both players have possession of the ball while there the ball is either in the end zone of broken the plane of the goal line, No contact on the right side, we already have contacts you're on the left. So on the left, we're going to give him credit as an airborne player forward progress contacted by the defense On the right side,...

https://behind-the-flag.captivate.fm/episode/get-it-right-airborne-receiver-

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/5286c8f1-ada4-48b8-92d8-de4ba5cf3fa5/scwgf4y-qakl6bclvxd7wsof.jpg"/>
Dennis Barela and Ken Adent

<itunes:duration>30:41</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>2</itunes:season><itunes:episode>21</itunes:episode><itunes:season>2</itunes:season><podcast:episode>21</podcast:episode><podcast:season>2</podcast:season><itunes:summary>GET IT RIGHT Airborne Receiver</itunes:summary><itunes:author>Dennis Barela and Ken Adent</itunes:author>

Abram Anaya, Mountain West Conference Center Judge, Film Evaluation
<itunes:title>Anaya, Mountain West Conference Center Judge, Film Evaluation</itunes:title>

Abram Anaya, Mountain West Conference Center Judge, Film Evaluation

Dana Pappas (1m 5s):

I want to welcome you to our second coach's and officials webinar for the sport of football for our spring season. As we were talking about before we started recording, this is a great way for us to stay connected with sports when there are none, which is sad, but this has been a great way for all of us to kind of stay connected with officiating and with sports and interscholastic athletics as a whole. The purpose of today's webinar is actually to talk a little bit about our Film process or evaluation process for then New Mexico activities and New Mexico officials association.

Dana Pappas (1m 39s):

And with us today, we have one of our very trustee, a very relied upon evaluators. Abraham is from Santa Fe and he's a former high school official who works division one football now. So when I need something done quickly, because of that matter, I'm able to send them to him.

Dana Pappas (2m 9s):

And I usually get a response back same day. And then Abram's going to do more of a deep dive into what he's looking for when he receives the Film. So one of the questions I get rather frequently from coaches is when we send in our clips, what happens, um, I think that there's a perception that they go into a black hole, never to be found again.

Dana Pappas (2m 40s):

And that is not the case. When we receive clips from coaches, either through huddle or other means, uh, we do send them to one of our evaluators to take a look at. Sometimes it's just clips. Sometimes it might be an entire game and the coaches will put some times comments within the context of huddle. They'll send an email that we include to our evaluator. We do have three individuals who we heavily rely upon for Film Evaluation Abraham is one of them, and then we have two other officials.

Dana Pappas (3m 11s):

One is a retired NCAA football and high school official. If a coach sends in what they feel is an incorrect call, the evaluator will take a look and explain to them why it either was or wasn't.

Dana Pappas (3m 44s):

So we do look at a lot of that. We never look at officials judgment. We're only looking at mechanics and rules misapplications if that's the case. So once we get that, that commentary back from the evaluator, we take it and send it to them that was involved on the game, as well as that a signer. So that way the assigner can use it for training Evaluation as well as to help make determinations with regard for close season assignments. So if you look at the bottom of your screen, there is a chat area there and you can just type it to that area. So without further ado, Abraham,

Abram Anaya (5m 21s):

Thank you, Dana. Uh, welcome everybody. Thank you. I really appreciate the honor of being here, talking with you folks. I've been a member of the NMA since 2001 and Oh, like most, most of you know who I am. I just relish the opportunity to give back. This is the best way I can do it. I've been studying football, uh, not only as a player, but as a official for well over 20 years. And, uh, as, uh, Dana had told you previously, I grew up and the New Mexico system, I came through the enemy, worked at a high school ball for many years.

Abram Anaya (5m 58s):

Uh, did some lucky enough to do some state championships. And then I moved into the division too, uh, arena where I was a referee in the Rocky mountain, athletic Conference. And eventually I moved into division one and I got the opportunity to work for the Mountain West. And I been working with the CFO West, which covers the Mountain West and the big 12 since 2014. So when I look at these Film I employ a lot of things that I've learned over the years. I've been to numerous conferences across the country with the big 10.

Abram Anaya (6m 30s):

Yeah, the big 12, the pack 12 The Mountain West and the Conference USA. So we'd look at, well, I do, when I start to put together, the films is I want to see is the official looking at his area responsibility. Are they looking where they're supposed to be looking? And if they see the fowl and they Judge in their judgment, that it was not a foul or didn't rise to that level. And that is exactly that it's judgment. And we don't, we will, you don't really beat them up over that.

Abram Anaya (7m 1s):

And why you need to understand from the official standpoint is the game is very fast. In high school, you have five officials looking at 22 players, and they need to make a judgment as to whether or not it's a fall or not a foul weather Rose to the level or, and didn't rise to the level within a fraction of a second because they can't dwell on it. If I see a holding on my tackle and I stare at that holding and I stay looking at that holding, and the play goes by me, who knows what I'm going to miss. I don't have the extra eight set of eyes that I would in college or in the NFL to where they can see something else and I need to transition to it.

Abram Anaya (7m 40s):

So we take that into consideration. And one of the biggest questions we get from the coaches is did this rise to the level of a fowl and I'll give the coaches a lot of credit. A lot of the coaches really do understand the philosophies in which we officiate football. If the fall is far away from the plate, did it have impact on the plate? Was there an effect on the play? And if there's no effect, most coaches won't even bother sending that in because they know we're not going to officiate to that.

Abram Anaya (8m 11s):

Nobody wants to go to a football game and see 70 flags on the field that just ruins the game for everybody, the players, the fans, the coaches, the parents, and nobody wants that. So they know we're going to call what needs to be called. And a lot of the coaches are really, really good about sending those in. Yes, there are some times where the officials and their judgment and we would have liked to have seen a particular file. And that's when we start to break down and still why The official did not call this particular problem.

Abram Anaya (8m 42s):

Maybe they just didn't see it. Maybe like I said, a second ago, they're caught up, I don't know their piece of the action that just, they didn't see quite the whole action that developed into the fault. And the last thing we want our officials to do as guests and that's okay, the game was very fast. These young athletes, again, bigger, every single year, they get faster every single year. And sometimes with only five officials or four, we're going to miss things. And we get that. And we understand that. So what we try to do is use this platform as a way to train the officials, to not only look in the area where they're supposed to be their area of responsibility, but transition quickly from one section to another section.

Abram Anaya (9m 22s):

So they can see the entirety of the play and officiate, where they should be officiating. Now for the officials that are on the conference call. One thing that I think we all need to understand is when we break down this Film yes, I may give you an incorrect call, but it is absolutely not a judgment on you as an official. It just means for this particular play, we would like to seeing you either not call this or it wasn't quite the fall that we thought conversely, to all the coaches out there.

Abram Anaya (9m 52s):

There's a lot of times when I get Film from the coaches saying, I believe this is a fall. And if I disagree respectfully, all articulate as to why it does not rise to the level of fall, or maybe that's confused as to what the fall may be with. That said, when I take a look at the Film, I take a long time on each and every single play. And I love to take, break it down to mechanics of the officials on the field, where they're looking at the individual action of the player.

Abram Anaya (10m 23s):

So we get a real good gauge of what is a fall and what is not a fall ball. We want call them what we don't want to call it with. That said, coaches, I asked you when you send it a clip for that, you have a specific file that was either called on the field or not called on the field. Please send me a simple narrative. It doesn't need to be anything extreme. Take a look at the action of the right guard. Take a look at the block from the free safety, just so I know where to look. Cause when I start breaking down these and some coaches will send me in, Hey, I want you to take a look at, play 38 and break down this particular play and I'll spend the half an hour on.

Abram Anaya (11m 1s):

And sometimes I won't find anything. And I think that frustrates the coach because I'm not addressing what they want me to address. And I want to address what you want me to address. If you send in a game and I've done this a number of times where Dana will send me an entire game and say, coaches are asking that to do a full Evaluation. I want you to understand doing a full evaluation on a game, takes me anywhere from three to five hours because I take this very seriously and I love to break down and I literally break down every single point and look at it front, regular speed, slow speed.

Abram Anaya (11m 34s):

I fronted back and I take it all the different aspects of the entire game. So that does take a while. If you have something specific that you want me to find, or you want me to address, please note it that way. I can have an idea of clip, whatever this particular action happened, or I believe this was a fowl and was not called at some point in time, I would love to see the NMIA transferred or transitioned to doing file reports. Just like we do at the college level, where ever you follow the throne, herb Flag that's thrown on the field, whether it's picked up or not needs to be reported.

Abram Anaya (12m 9s):

If I were to get a fall report and then I can go to every specific play. That's wonderful because then I can tell you exactly what the followup was called. And then I construct a breakdown, whether or not it was truly, and honestly, and fall. Now I understand that that's not going to be feasible in all cases now and the bigger schools. So the five 86 schools, I believe that should be something that it could be addressed and maybe should be addressed in the near future. As a possibility, I think it would help advance our training quite a bit.

Abram Anaya (12m 40s):

So these are just things that I particularly wanted to express this morning to let the coaches know if you want me to find something, please give me some kind of small synopsis, tell your Film Cruz. If there is a foul on the field, record, the referee record the referee. That way I could see the referee's mechanics and just based off of what his signals are. Usually I can break down exactly what the fall was. And in most times I can tell you exactly what the player was called on without actually knowing the number.

Abram Anaya (13m 11s):

Cause in most cases it's pretty obvious. So with that, I want to open it to both of the coaches and officials ask me any question, anything that you, any, anything that you would like to know about the process or what we're looking for or how we break down these films? Okay. Abram first question. How important would, Film be for dead ball officiating, between and plates?

Abram Anaya (13m 43s):

So the dead ball officiating. I know a lot of cases I get placed from the coaches saying, I want you to see the action or the, they say there is no Film for this particular action. Have your Film crews continue to record just a little bit longer after the play, because a lot of times we'll have a late hit and it's significantly late to where the film's is cut off already. And I have no idea what happened. A punch was thrown, or this kid has hit way out of bounds or this word and the player is getting up off the ground.

Abram Anaya (14m 16s):

He was shoved back to the ground and I just can't see these. So tell the Film Cruz, give me at least two or three seconds after the play. It's not going to waste any of the extra Film because it's all digital. It's not going to waste any extra time uploading it. It's it's all the exact same. And this is actually very valuable. So I could see exactly what the officials are doing. As soon as the play comes to an end, I want to make sure that we're and that we have appropriate dead ball officiating that they just don't go into.

Abram Anaya (14m 47s):

Okay, let's get ready for the next play. Let's start to are mechanics. And after the end of every single play, you should have a mechanic, just like a pre snap routine should have a dead ball routine, and we can address those. And this is a great opportunity to teach and those situations.

Dana Pappas (15m 8s):

Thank you. Next question. How do you evaluate targeting calls that were turned into you for review?

Abram Anaya (15m 17s):

That's a great question. So player safety is at the top of everybody's list. As you, these young player athletes, like I said earlier, they're getting bigger again faster. We will always err, on the side of safety, if it's a tweener, I will support it 100%. If it's a tweener on the field, like I said, at the beginning of this, you guys are making that split second judgment on the impact. That's very violent, very fast through all the Flag you'll be supported. And I think the enemy will back me up on this one, 100%.

Abram Anaya (15m 50s):

We don't want, we want to teach these athletes to lower that strike zone. We want to teach them not to lead with the crown of the helmet. We want to make sure we don't get any young person hurt. Lastly, we want us to see an ambulance roll out onto that field. And I believe the coaches I've seen, I've got a number of targeting plays Center from the coaches and I've never once had a coach tell me that The that The Oh, officials on the field completely blew this targeting. It should have never been called. What I usually get is yes, this was a high hit.

Abram Anaya (16m 22s):

It was up bad hit. I don't believe it was targeted because he hit with the shoulder and it was shoulder to shoulder. And I usually respond back with, yeah, that was a super violent at high hit. Please teach your athletes to lower that strike zone because if it is anywhere up here, we're going to Support the official 100% it's player safety. And I am per I can guarantee you, Dana can agree with me on that one.

Dana Pappas (16m 50s):

Absolutely. And we do get a lot of those films in particular about targeting and you know, Abrams did a really good job explaining to a coach. Why or why not? It might've been ruled in that way. Again, we aren't looking at, uh, negating officials judgment, but we want to be able to explain the rule to the coach. If they're, you know, maybe they're unclear because this is all part of the educational process. Um, couple more questions popping up. Next one is how many of your reviews are blindside blocks? Clarification's got, how many do you think you get on those?

Abram Anaya (17m 23s):

I would say I get more blind side blogs that they're targeting to get you to guarantee you that a holding probably get the most of, because holding is that one fall. That is so darn subjective. Even at my level, you really have to gauge at my, my boss always tells us we're instructed when you throw a Flag for something like a blindside block or a holding, you're now setting the bar of words, you're going to call whole game. So if you're going to let the tugs, the slight toes, the slight pools go, you better let it go for the whole game.

Abram Anaya (17m 55s):

And they're not called that in the late in the fourth quarter. If you're going to call those tugs, call them early. And now you're letting both coaches know that this is how the game's going to be officiated. So for the blindside block, I think what I have seen is a lot of the coaches are teaching their players how to avoid that fowl. They're doing a great job of what's called the praise block, where they just like a basketball. You're just stand your position. Some, raise their hands up like this so that they're just nothing more than a screen. So you're not attacking now. You're not delivering force, which makes it a fall.

Abram Anaya (18m 27s):

Or they're also teaching. Put your hands out, put your hands down and walk. Most of these athletes are so strong that they can extend their arms. And you can literally decathlete somebody with your arms fully extended and avoid being called a foul now, and the college level. We're also seeing this too, but when they, the blindside blocks at this level are much more violent. So I'm really glad to see that we're getting this out. And again, I don't overthink this. If you think it's a blindside block and a lot of things, a lot of times I get the coaches a little give, send me in a clip saying this wasn't a blindside block.

Abram Anaya (19m 1s):

The guy saw coming, you'll have, The the person being blocked. He's focused here. The blindside blocks coming in from the side, from the perpendicular. And right before the hip, those delivered, you'll see the head move slightly. And you'll see a dip in the shoulder, which means now technically that player did see a coming and he's now protected him self some degree. That's still pretty blind side block. If you can't fully defend yourself and you're just split second reaction and you're getting wiped out.

Abram Anaya (19m 33s):

That's what this that's what the intent of this foul is to prevent that. So tell your players, if you're going to come in from the side, you're just as effective two hands

https://behind-the-flag.captivate.fm/episode/abram-anaya-mountain-west-conference-center-judge-film-evalaution-

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/8c563ff3-beba-43d5-9787-a48ea7b5f13d/img-2088.jpg"/>
Dennis Barela and Ken Adent

<itunes:duration>01:00:53</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>20</itunes:episode><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><podcast:episode>20</podcast:episode><podcast:season>1</podcast:season><itunes:summary>Anaya, Mountain West Conference Center Judge, Film Evaluation</itunes:summary><itunes:author>Dennis Barela and Ken Adent</itunes:author>

Dean Blandino, CFO National Director of Instant Replay
<itunes:title>Dean Blandino, CFO National Director of Instant Replay</itunes:title>

Building Blocks To Success

Ken Adent (4s):

Ken. Uh, I was going to save it for a question, but what I'll I'll ask that you, hopefully you will address, and that is how can they use Replay to improve their officiating on the field. And by that, I mean, and how they understand the Replay process and at the high school level, obviously we don't have it, how they can understand Replay what Replay is looking for and then how they can turn that around and improve their officiating on the field.

Dean Blandino (3m 22s):

Yeah, I'd say it's a good question. And we talked To How would you officials and NFL officials quite a bit about that it's, you know, knowing the Replay process, how does that make you a better on film official? And I think when, when Replay was first implemented, um, there was a, there was a clear separation and, and it was the on-field officials did what they do, Replay did what they do. And there really wasn't a lot of collaboration and it was almost, I think initially there was some, there was some kind of hesitancy on the, on the part of the game officials, uh, you know, in terms of accepting Replay I think that has obviously changed over time and it's become really a part of the fabric of the game at the college level and, and the NFL level.

Dean Blandino (4m 6s):

I think understanding the process, um, is, is critical, uh, because there are many things now that, you know, and the college game we're using wireless communication to communicate from the Replay booth to the on-field official's and then among the on-field officials and replays getting involved and in more and more things, penalty enforcements and, and helping in other areas because the game does happen very quickly. I think understanding what Replay does will help you even at the high school level, because what we're going to talk about it a little bit later is the Replay process.

Dean Blandino (4m 42s):

And I think if you can apply that process to whenever you watch game film, I think that can help you get better, right? How do we get better without actually getting out and getting reps right through video, right? And the access to video and has been, you know, has evolved over the years. And it's, it's, it's so much better than when it was when I first started or, or when I'm sure when many of you first started and we have access to film and access to people and, and, and to be able to collaborate that way is, is so important to our development.

Dean Blandino (5m 12s):

And so watching game film, that's what Replay is. It's watching plays on video, breaking it down, there's a process to it. And I think if you understand and learn that process, it can help you break down your own game film, and then it can help you see things out on the football field. So, so we'll go through that and hopefully it'll help you pick up some things and I'll be, I'll be quite honest. I'm also, I'm going to, you're going to hear a little bit of a recruiting pitch from me today. And, and because we need, we need good people in Replay and we need to find other ways to create a pipeline, um, and inclusive and, and sustainable pipeline.

Dean Blandino (5m 50s):

And, and so, and so you're going to hear a little bit of that as well.

Mike Contrezas (5m 53s):

Good. Thank you very much, Mike.

Ken Adent (5m 55s):

We're asking Dean a question. So, um, again, you guys Are, our guest today is Dean Blandino you can look on the left side of the screen. His, his resume is impressive. All it, I won't read the whole thing, but, um, fascinating story, uh, multifaceted. Mmm. And the who's who of, of college football officiating, especially in the Replay area. Um, uh, just a little story. Dean I, this is my first year at Sassa and I got a position for off field Replay just to learn more about it.

Ken Adent (6m 30s):

And, um, it has just opened my eyes to Replay and it's actually going to make me a better on-field official. Um, so I'm really excited to have you here today, but I'll turn it over to you, ladies and gentlemen. Dean Blandino

Dean Blandino (6m 47s):

All right. Well, thank you. So what I want to do, and I'll, I'll just share my screen here and hopefully do this the right way. I've been, I've been on a, I've been on zoom calls pretty much all week, but I think we can figure this out. And, um, so what I want to do is I want, I want to talk about, like I said, The the recruitment process, and I think this is going to be important as, as the future of Replay and what, and what that, what that looks like.

Dean Blandino (7m 17s):

And it, and it's going to start with, it's going to start with, with people, it's going to start with people like you. And, uh, and so let me see if I can get this here.

Ken Adent (7m 31s):

That's working. Okay, good. Good, good.

Dean Blandino (7m 34s):

So let's go, Let's go to the beginning. Right? So, so it starts with people, right? And, and like I said, we are trying to create an inclusive and sustainable pipeline for Replay and, and what our population currently exists, um, of, and the college ranks is, is it's mostly made up of retired on field. And then there's obviously that was, that was our, our pool, right?

Dean Blandino (8m 4s):

When Replay first came in, in the mid two thousands, well, where were we going to get people that understood officiating and understood rules? Well, they were going to be on field officials in, and the way it happened was on-field officials that were toward the end of their career for whatever reason. And, uh, and they ended up in the Replay book and many of these officials have been successful. They've been, they've done really well, and some of them have struggled. And, and what I'm going to talk about is I'm going to talk about that Replay official profile and what we're looking for and, and why it makes sense to look outside that, that pool of people.

Dean Blandino (8m 41s):

Um, so what we want to do is we want to identify people like yourselves, people from around the country that are on the field. Now that maybe you're not thinking about, um, I, I want to, I have goals. I have things I want to achieve on the field. I love it. Um, but maybe I haven't been exposed to Replay maybe I don't understand what they do. And, and, and so if we can educate People like yourselves on field officials that are earlier in their careers, and maybe, maybe it'll maybe a light bulb will go off, maybe, maybe something will click and you say, Hey, wait a minute.

Dean Blandino (9m 14s):

I have those skills. And I could apply those skills to Replay and maybe I could go even farther in my career than I would on the field. So we want to identify people that have the skillset and have an interest and get them opportunities. Right. We want to, we want to look outside the box and look outside of fishy. Okay. Right. Can we recruit people? Not from the officiating moral, believe me, I didn't, I didn't, I never officiated on the field. And, and I feel like I accomplished a lot in, and I did it through different ways.

Dean Blandino (9m 45s):

I did it through learning the rules. I did it through video and technology. And, and so, so you can accomplish what you want in a lot of different ways. So we're looking at student athletes, we're looking at lower levels, officials and other sports or athletes and other sports. Maybe, maybe these are, these are athletes at a division two or division three school playing football. And aren't going to go to the NFL on the field as a player, but they love the game. They want to stay involved. Maybe they can transition as an official, and we can teach them the rules and teach them the mechanics and, and help them along.

Dean Blandino (10m 19s):

Right. As, and then as, as all, you know, it doesn't, it doesn't happen overnight. And we don't, we're not looking to, to fast track people. We're not looking, but we want to get people from other areas, interested in officiating, interested in Replay and, and, uh, and we can create that pipeline. Okay. So what does that profile look like? What are we looking for in a, in a Replay official, it starts with character and, and look, this isn't rocket science. Um, if, if I'm the head of any company and, and I don't care if whatever industry it is, I want people with good character that that's a part of it.

Dean Blandino (10m 56s):

And when we look at on-field officials, right, we want, we want good people. It's as simple as that. And you're going to spend time on cruise. You're going to spend time communicating with people, interacting with people. And we want, we want the type of people that have good character that are going to represent our organizations well and are going to make this environment and make this whole process and enjoyable one. So it starts there. And then as we get into more specifics, right, with looking for people that are more analytical, all right, or have, have the ability to analyze plays instead of officiating it.

Dean Blandino (11m 33s):

And that's the heartless transition. When you talk about people that I've worked on the field that transitioned to Replay, it's hard. You have to, you have to reprogram your brain because you're used to looking at the game a certain way. You're gonna use, you're gonna use your mechanics and your positioning and your experience and your instinct and your feel, and guts sometimes To make decisions in a split second, looking at it once in Replay, right?

Dean Blandino (12m 3s):

Those things can help us in certain areas, but we're not making decisions based on what we feel or what we think. Okay. We have to make decisions based on the video. And we have to focus on what you can prove. So we can look at a play and get a feel for it. We could think something. I think that Pass, this is incomplete. It looks like it's a catch, but when you're using those types of language and the Replay booth that can lead us down a wrong path, because you have to prove it with the video, Prove that it was a catch prove that it was incomplete, prove that it was a touchdown.

Dean Blandino (12m 45s):

So the question you have to ask yourself when you're considering replace, can you work through an analytical process? Okay. So as you think about that, think about that question. Can you manage multiple inputs when you're up in the Replay booth? And I don't know how many of you have been in a Replay booth? Um, it can be overwhelming the first time. And so you've got there's there's technology that we have to deal with. There's three television screens in the college game. You've got a technician that's responsible for operating the system.

Dean Blandino (13m 18s):

You have a communicator that is your assistant, your I R number two, you have, in many cases, a fourth person in the booth that is insistent Communicare that is going to help you describe what's happening on the field and tell you what the offense is doing. And then if we go to a review, we're talking to the referee. So can you manage all of those, all of those streams of communication, and sometimes it's happening simultaneously. So you ask yourself the question, can you handle process where you have to manage a number of inputs, simultaneous <inaudible>, Are you a flexible thinker?

Dean Blandino (13m 57s):

This is so critical because not all replays are created equal as we go through process and a little bit, you're going to see as the game situation changes and it's changing every play, right? That's going to dictate what we do in the Replay. So we have to have the ability to apply the proper rule at the proper time. Now that that on-field officiating has that aspect as well. Right? Can we use our experience to know when this set of circumstance presents, it presents itself?

Dean Blandino (14m 28s):

Can we apply the proper role and the next time it happens, can we be consistent? So again, ask yourself the question. Are you uncomfortable working in an environment where the hard and fast rules don't always apply? Look, we work in officiating. It's not always, we want rules to be black and white, but we know there's so much gray. And even in the Replay booth, when it's supposed to be more definitive and it's supposed to be more objective, we have gray area and we have to be able to navigate through those gray areas.

Dean Blandino (14m 60s):

So can we do that? All right. Attitude again, attitude is so critical to To anything that we do, but especially in the Replay booth, we're looking for people with the right attitude. Are you coachable? Okay. And even, and even probably more critical. Cool is can you approach the game in a different way? Okay. Can you adapt your way of thinking to a new process? The Replay officials that are successful adapt their way of thinking to the Replay way of thinking, not the other way around, if you're stuck in your ways coming from on the field or coming from where you're coming from, and you're stuck in your way of thinking, and you're not going to Changed the way you approach the game, you're not going to be successful.

Dean Blandino (15m 47s):

So you asked yourself that question, you know, am I open to a new way of looking at the game? Can I turn off my officiating brain at times? And can I be more analytical? Really, really tough sometimes. And when you talk to play to people that have Johnny on-field and then work Replay, they'll tell you that's the hardest transition sexual world looking for. Okay. So, so what are the, what are the Building Blocks To Success and look, this is not specific to Replay.

Dean Blandino (16m 19s):

This is on-field officiating To, but this is what we're looking for. This is how we create Success and these are Building Blocks they could also be barriers to success if we're not diligent in these areas, preparation. Okay. Preparation is key preparation. If we're prepared and we've gotten through the thing is we need to go through and we're not just winging it, we're going to be successful. So what does that look like? Right? Are we evaluating our own performance?

Dean Blandino (16m 49s):

We have a game. We work the game during the week. Are we evaluating our performance? Are we going through every game you work, you know, those three or four plays that you have a question about that you can't wait, you know, to go look at the film and see what the film shows it's the same in the Replay booth, there are those three or four plays. You want to go back and look at, you know, are you going back? Are you evaluating your own decisions after the fact? And are you coming to the same conclusion?

Dean Blandino (17m 20s):

That's what we ask our Replay officials to do, you know, collaboration with your peers. We have access to so many people. We have access. We have ways to communicate. Um, like we never had before. Are we communicating with our peers, working with each other, sharing, plays, sharing, test questions, those types of things. Okay. Our rules and our mechanics review is so important. What was knowledge is critical. Um, we want to be experts in the, and it doesn't change.

Dean Blandino (17m 50s):

And the Replay many Replay officials think that when they become a Replay official, they don't have to know all the rules. I only have to know what's reviewable, and that's not the case. We have to know penalty enforcements, because we may overturn a call on the field. And now a penalty enforcement may change. And we have to know that. So our rules, our mechanics, we have to be experts at all times really critical. One of the things I like to do was I was learning, you know, I was learning the NFL rules.

Dean Blandino (18m 21s):

Um, I was learning the college rules. I study up on the high school rules. I try to take a section of the rule book and I try to write it in my own words because I can understand my own words. Rule books are written. It almost feels like legally, it feels like legal, a legal document. And, and, and in some ways that's what it is. But if we can write it in our own words, that we can understand it and have somebody help us, maybe somebody, maybe it's a mentor, maybe somebody on our crew, somebody that we've looked up to that can help us.

Dean Blandino (18m...

https://behind-the-flag.captivate.fm/episode/dean-blandino-cfo-national-director-of-instant-replay-

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/a0d43f61-d703-4e2b-9361-343395813513/usatsi-9090586-1024x778.jpg"/>
Dennis Barela and Ken Adent

<itunes:duration>01:02:06</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>19</itunes:episode><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><podcast:episode>19</podcast:episode><podcast:season>1</podcast:season><itunes:summary>Dean Blandino, CFO National Director of Instant Replay</itunes:summary><itunes:author>Dennis Barela and Ken Adent</itunes:author>

Dana Pappas and Nate Acosta, Commission of New Mexico Officials, Commissioner's Corner
<itunes:title>Dana Pappas and Nate Acosta, Commission of New Mexico Officials, Commissioner's Corner</itunes:title>

Top 10 Commissioner's Questions

Dennis Barela (0s):

Alright, great.

Ken Adent (1m 6s):

Thank you for joining. Um, for our state, it's received national attention now and received the local press and really it's just exploded. I know we did not expect it, but we embraced it. Let me tell him. And we were really that other sports got involved. Um, Nate have you, Dennis and I were talking, is it the newer Officials? Is it the middle official? Is it the seasoned official who's who's been jumping on board in your opinion, in the basketball or whatever groups that you attended?

Nate Acosta (5m 15s):

Um, it really just depends, um, you know, depending on, you know, I can speak for basketball, um, you know, it's, it's our veteran, Officials all the way down to our brand new Officials. Um, and I, and I would say that that's probably pretty similar, um, in all sports, um, we'll find out tonight how our soccer population is. Um, and, and next week, what our volleyball population looks like, but for the most part, um, you know, from our younger Officials for our, and I think everybody's kind of taking an advantage of, of the opportunity.

Ken Adent (5m 47s):

Okay. The reason I asked that question in, you know, Dana, you're, I'm sure you're on top of this, but because the newer Officials, I think we're going to bring in through technology through, uh, what, what Dennis is really fantastic at is, is, uh, you know, media, you know, web media and web advertising, Instagram, all of that other stuff that he's involved with. Um, and I, you know, the old fashioned ways of us getting New or Officials it, and word of mouth, it's just the us older guys are the guys that are aging, really arguing in touch with the newer.

Ken Adent (6m 23s):

I just, I find that this might be a way we can do a better job of recruiting.

Dana Pappas (6m 33s):

And I think you're exactly right. Ken I think, you know, we're in an interesting situation nationally from the standpoint of, you know, definitely trying to retain Officials, but we're also wanting to recruit new members into the association, you know, every association across the country, whether it's things we're talking about at our last, um, board of directors meeting for the national association of sports Officials was the need to have somebody on our board. Who's a little bit more in touch with millennials, you know, kind of with the generation below me.

Dana Pappas (7m 4s):

And it was funny because they were like, well, Dana, you're the millennial on the board. I was like, Whoa, Whoa, hold on a second. I wasn't sure if I was gonna sign off on that, but there is a realization nationally that there, that we've got to start talking in a different way to potential Officials because, you know, we're in a situation where we have to kind of do a blend of things as, as you all know, I'm huge, huge on relationships. And I don't ever want the face to face to end.

Dana Pappas (7m 34s):

I don't want relationships in the family to end, but I also have to be a realist and understand that the old methods of communication aren't going to resonate really with, with newer Officials and using media and using technology and using all those different, um, methods of training of recruiting, you know, we have to get on board with that. And I think that through this pandemic, we've really seen that there's not only a need for it, but there's also an interest in learning in that way.

Dana Pappas (8m 7s):

And, and looking all of the Officials across the sports that we've done, there's been a decent mix of very veteran Officials, as well as newer Officials, but it's really the Officials that are kind of in that six to 10 year range that have really kind of signed on with what's going on with, with technology. And I think it's the people who kind of have their feet, one foot on either side of that, the New slash veteran certification.

Dana Pappas (8m 38s):

Um, but I just, I really feel like this is a great way to reach the individuals who are visual learners, um, because how we used to do things, how we did things three, five years ago, some of it works, but certainly it's time to adjust and adapt, um, sports and, and officiating has to evolve right along with it.

Nate Acosta (8m 59s):

Absolutely. And, and really, you know, I, I'm probably the millennial and, and if, and I joked before we started this, no, unless it has bullet points or a little red dot that shows me that I have a notification, um, chances are, I'm not going to read it. Um, and I think that's kinda how we have to engage, um, some of these younger, newer Officials, but we still have to keep that balance of reaching out to our veteran Officials and they still like to have live meetings. And they still like to, to be that they like to have that face to face interaction.

Nate Acosta (9m 33s):

And, and I, I tell people all the time, the only reason I enjoy officiating was the ice tea after the game. And, and you know, that that still holds true today. I mean, everything I do on the floor and giving back to the community and giving back to the kids is fun and all, but the most fun that I've had officiating was the ice tea after the game. And so somehow we gotta find a balance between, uh, that one-on-one that interaction and using the little red notification dot.

Dennis Barela (10m 4s):

Yeah. And so, so with that, um, when we first approached you Dana about these webinars, um, you know, what was your expectations when, when we told you what our plan was, what did you actually get out of listening? Um, how'd you chill the nest Two months, went with these webinars of when we first sat down with you by telephone, you know, and say, Hey, this is R and D I R R idea.

Dana Pappas (10m 35s):

You know, it was funny because I don't know, I don't know what my expectations were because it was so new. It was such uncharted territory for all of us. Um, I was hoping that there would be a little bit of interest. I was hoping that, um, you know, it would go on for a couple of weeks and, and, uh, and just, you know, maybe spread into some other sports, but I really wasn't expecting it to be everything that it has been. Um, it, it exceeded my expectation.

Dana Pappas (11m 5s):

I may have had, it's gone so far off the charts for me. It's just been incredible. And, you know, I've been on probably 95% of all of them that have been on across all sports. And, you know, for me, obviously the content has been great, but the bigger, I guess, the bigger win out of all of it is just, Officials been together from across the state, um, getting on the same page, but building those relationships. And, you know, for me, it seemed on some of them see everybody's faces and just being able to spend that time with then, because my schedule when it's normal is absolutely crazy.

Dana Pappas (11m 47s):

And I don't always have time to spend one on one with Officials as much as I'd like to. So just having the, to listen in and hear you all feed off of each other and, um, you know, at the end of, and people just, Hey, you know, Oh, how's the family. And checking in one another, that, that family is really, what's so important to me. And it's been unbelievable just to be able to witness it and see how much people are gain out of it. And, you know, the positive text messages that I get as the webinars are going on about how exceptional everything is, it's just, it's blown my mind.

Dana Pappas (12m 24s):

And it really has helped me, you know, you all know I've been doing this for a long time, but it's helped me connect with my population that I serve in an extraordinary way. I mean, I can't thank you all enough for starting it. And of course, everybody who's been involved since the onset because it it's given me a very full heart. And it's given me a lot of hope to see so many of our Officials who are so willing to give up their time to help us Officials get better and really just want to talk officiating and nothing.

Dana Pappas (12m 57s):

You know, I'm of all of the things that have happened in my career. I've never been more proud of my Officials that I've been in this, in this pandemic because what you guys have done and Officials, and all sports have done to make this happen and to participate. It's just more my heart. And I, I can't thank you enough. I can't think everybody has done it enough because it's just, it's been a sign of hope. It's been reinvigorating. It's just, it's been so positive. I can't see a downside aside from trying to figure out how to, you know, how to continue it, um, and find more people who are interested in being a part of it.

Dana Pappas (13m 36s):

So I think that that's the only like, Oh, you know, how do we maintain this? But it's just, it's been incredible, like just absolutely incredible in every way.

Nate Acosta (13m 47s):

And she touches on the family, the fact that everybody gets to kind of meet and we're talking Officials from all four corners of the state are joining in. And, and I see E that, which is awesome and exciting, but I also see the fact that we're the consistency in the message and the training. Um, and that's something that Dana and I constantly talk about is how can we, uh, be more consistent statewide and, and how, and the central and the The Northwest and the Southwest and the Southeast just kind of come together and, and really be a lot more consistent.

Nate Acosta (14m 26s):

And, and I think this is kind of really, this was the blessing that needed to happen in order for that to happen. And, and, and it's awesome because everyone's getting the same message.

Dana Pappas (14m 39s):

Yeah. I told that, you know, that's the, that's been, the incredible thing is seeing all of you working together, because I look at the Officials and especially on the football webinars, um, you know, you have gotten Todd Morris involved with helping you get some speakers and he's a Clovis. I, and just seeing people working together and talking about the NMO, not once, did I hear somebody say, well, in our region, we do this a lot. Our region, we do that. It's been, this is how we are going to approach things.

Dana Pappas (15m 12s):

This is philosophically how we want to look at, look at things. And it hasn't ever been a regional issue, which has been amazing because we fight that all the time being sort of geographically challenged. So it's really been, it's been incredible to see people coming together and maybe it was on necessity because everybody is kind of struggling a little bit, but I just feel like it's been such a unifier that, um, I can't sing its praises enough. So it's been, it's been amazing.

Ken Adent (15m 44s):

It has been I've, I've met people from all over the state and it's like, it made the state smaller where we all, you know, the guys from Clovis talking to the guys from Crucis and it's just fantastic. I got to touch base on the state clinic. We just got an email that it's going to be all virtual this year. Um, do you, are you guys still trying to figure that out or how's that gonna work?

Dana Pappas (16m 6s):

We are so Nate and I plan on the next couple of weeks to figure out kind of what the schedule is going to look like for that. So, you know, we'll probably end up having it the weekend that the state clinic was initially scheduled for, which will be July 17th and 18th, I think. Um, and we'll look to have the three sports, which would be football, volleyball, and basketball during that weekend. Um, probably multiple sessions we're still looking at. So we're going to try to figure out if we're going to do some panel stuff. And if we're going to take the model that the AFOA folks, you know, under, under you guys' leadership have done as far as the state credit goes, but we definitely, you know, having this platform already kind of preset for us, gives us some really good ideas as far as developing that schedule, finding speakers, all of that stuff.

Dana Pappas (16m 55s):

So we'll have to, I mean, obviously we have to do the sessions that are rules, changes and points of emphasis, all of that. But these, uh, these webinars have given us really good ideas as far as other topics that maybe we wouldn't have thought about before. So it, you know, we're excited, it's something new and different, and I'm actually so glad that we've had all these webinars to date because we aren't having to reinvent the wheel for lack of a better way to put it. We've got some ideas because they've already been presented to us.

Dana Pappas (17m 26s):

So that's been super helpful for us

Dennis Barela (17m 31s):

Going back to, you know, how we were able to be all on one page and talk about one philosophy throughout the state is I don't think this happened overnight because we had been talking with Officials throughout the state for about a year. Uh, we've been working with Shawn Cooper and Crucis, uh, Leonard Longo, Longhorn, uh, Dave <inaudible>, um, Mike Horgan sends down and Clovis.

Dennis Barela (18m 3s):

And so there's been about nine of us that have, uh, stayed in communication for about a year now on slack.com and text message and emails and just bouncing ideas off of each other of, of looking at film, Hey, what do you see here? This is what the evaluator told us here. And just kind of trying to, um, stay in the rule book and the mechanic book and saying, well, we don't do it this way, but this is what the rule book says. And so when this, uh, pandemic happen and we said, we reached out and said, Hey, we want to put together webinar's and this is how we want to do it.

Dennis Barela (18m 41s):

They're already on board with us because of things that we have done before working on the, on the new mechanic book and sending that out statewide to, to all those contacts that we had, um, been working on for over a year. Um, you know, it just, wasn't something that happened over over a Friday, Saturday. Um, you know, it, it, it, you know, it took some trust, uh, throughout the month, you know, ISTEP on baka from Santa Fe, you know, was a really big part and, and, uh, sending out weekly quizzes last, uh, regular season.

Dennis Barela (19m 22s):

And so when we reached out to everybody, we just kind of said, Hey, let's expand what we had been doing and get everybody else involved. And this is how we want to do it. And in fact, we want to bring in some, some guest speakers to teach us. And so when we started reaching out to these New Mexico Officials, they said, Hey, I know Brad Rogers, you know what? I can get a hold of Sarah Thomas. I could get ahold of, you know, I New I'm Scott Novak from the clinic.

Dennis Barela (19m 53s):

Um, Leonard from Farmington, his mentor was Frank philosopher from the PAC 12. So, you know, everybody was this one person away. And so I think the trust that we've built over the last year in this group had a big part of us being able to make this, um, webinars work so quickly and everybody being on the same page, because we had already been talking for a long time.

Nate Acosta (20m 19s):

You know, I, I really think the most impressive thing is, is all this stuff is going on behind the scenes and Dana, and I really know very little about it. How, how do I get rid of this?

Dennis Barela (5m 5s):

Um, I'm not sure how you got the pin to turn on, but there should be, um, a drop down box probably clicked with the graphics look better now than they did last year. Have you guys done improvement on it? It looks great.

Bob Arnone (5m 20s):

Yeah. Thank you. Yeah, we continue to try to, to make those kinds of changes at all. Okay. I hope that okay. That got rid of markings. Great. Alright. Okay. So let's go back to what's happening down here at the, uh, Down here at the goal line, and we'll just jump right over the goal line extended. So you've always heard about runners holding the ball out and break it a plane.

Bob Arnone (5m 51s):

Well, here's that plane that everybody talks about? Uh, so the goal line is actually a, the plane of the goal line is actually on the front edge of the goal line there. And then it kind of gets back to the positioning of the pilot. So there's plane runs right across the front face of that pilot. Uh, so that makes it important to have that, uh, Right there. And also the goal land extends out beyond the pylon.

Bob Arnone (6m 21s):

So this can become a little bit of a tricky play here that we need to watch out. And I'll just run this through a step by step where it was, see this runner, dive, dive out there. And what we'll be able to see is he's out past the sideline, but that ball is breaking the plane of the goal line and he hasn't touched a pile on yet. Uh, so we can go ahead and move around and, and look at this just to see the kind of angle that we would have just to prove that point.

Bob Arnone (6m 54s):

So you can see the ball down here. Well, and the goal line there, and it's outside the pylon, what's important and determine what's going on here is it, the player has got to maintain contact inside the field of play in order for this to be a touchdown. So that's something that you have to watch out for there, which is gonna hit and play that up. I'm going to put this on a comparison mode and what's your say on the Right is he's diving out there.

Bob Arnone (7m 32s):

So the balls break and the plane of the goal line on the right side there, but there's no part of his body contacting the field of play. So on the left, where we do have contact with the player, touching the ground ball, breaking the plane of goal line extended, we have a touchdown here on the left, over here on the right side, we're going to wind up spotting the ball, just short of the goal line there. And we just have to make an estimate where he went out of bounds.

Bob Arnone (8m 3s):

And then that's where we'll put it. We can put this on play through, we'll move over to the position about where that wing official would be. And this is what he's going to say. That's not gonna be an easy call. And because he's watching for that goal line, aye, he's watching for the fact that he's got, uh, you know, 200 pounds of runner coming his direction. What's he going to do so now this is a good opportunity to think in your mind, don't go calling touchdown or anything like that yet, and then start talking to some other officials.

Bob Arnone (8m 44s):

So it was a back judge, if I don't have any action going on over here, that, and I need to worry about <inaudible>.

Dennis Barela (8m 59s):

I'm sorry, go ahead, go ahead and mute your mic and turn your computer or cameras off please.

Bob Arnone (9m 11s):

And when that guy goes to dive, where I can help as a back judge, if I'm on pro turf, maybe I'll be able to say some of those pellets flying up there, or if I'm on natural grass, you know, we may want to go over there and talk to that wing official and look to see if there's any markings there and the dirt to determine whether or not you had a body part in the ground or not. So this is a good opportunity to work on your crew to make communications as well.

Bob Arnone (9m 42s):

One of the advantages that I Get It Right offers is really kind of playing out now in the situation that we all are in, that we can't get out there. I watch those spring practices participate in those scrimmages. Uh, so now you can get in some reps and see some of these situations you're really kind of tough to handle in real life anyway. So it gives you the opportunity to train your brain on what you need to be looking for.

Bob Arnone (10m 14s):

Let's go back to the pylon discussions here And again, the position up pile line. And it does two things. Number one, It establishes that a plane of the goal line, but it's also out of bounds. So you can have a situation here where that player is diving. You can see that as how much going to hit the pylon. The ball is tucked in up under his belly there, and then he hits the pilot.

Bob Arnone (10m 46s):

So at that point, uh, he's considered out of bounds. Uh, and then we had to make a determination of where that ball is. So that ball would be spotted again, shorter the goal line, back them up, what don't want to play through smooth move over to this wing position. So you can swing the camera. Something just happened to be there.

Dennis Barela (11m 17s):

Did you stop sharing your shot?

Bob Arnone (11m 20s):

Did it stop sharing? Yeah. And then let's find that screen share again.

Ken Adent (11m 30s):

Hey Bob, I love the graphic when you can clean and glass. It is so cool. Hey, your screens back. Does anybody have any questions right now while we're on the pause?

Bob Arnone (11m 45s):

Uh, say it again,

4 (11m 48s):

Just asking if any official questions while we're on a pause here. Okay.

Bob Arnone (11m 56s):

Okay. Yeah, one more. Okay. Okay. All right. So I have this. Am I going to know the shit who's up And I'll see you in the mind, or I think you're sharing your screen please.

4 (12m 27s):

<inaudible> <inaudible>

Bob Arnone (12m 51s):

Okay, good. Alright. We're going to get this play in. If it kills us here, let's go ahead. And now we got the wing officials, you, and then that's what he's going to see. So again, once that player contacts that pylon and he's considered out of bounds, and then we have to make a quick determination to determine where that ball is, the ball break the plane before he was out of bounds or not in this case. No. So we're going to go ahead and call that place, that ball shorter, the goal line Matter.

Bob Arnone (13m 28s):

And this is one that, uh, actually had happened to me a couple of years ago. I will get ahead and just kind of stepped through this one again, The the player is diving for that pylon. He's maintaining control of the ball. Now the ball is hitting that pilot. So two things happening there. Uh, the most important one is that ball is breaking the plane of the goal line. So that's going to be rolled to touchdown. Uh, even though the ball is also at the same time, going out across the, uh, other sideline there.

Bob Arnone (14m 5s):

So what's important here and what makes us different than go line extended here. As long as the ball is hitting that pilot line, we have ourselves a touchdown, even though that this guy is flying towards that, if he was trying to reach that ball outside the plan line, and then we'll dealing with what we were talking about for goal line extended And the comparison side And the RIGHT, you see that he's losing the losing control of the ball and you might, uh, and you know what happens, uh, if you lose control of the ball, going into the opponents, uh, and end zone, and then a ball hits the pylon and bounces on out.

Bob Arnone (14m 51s):

So now we're gonna, instead of a touchdown, that's going to be a touchback. And according to rule eight dash five dash three, Right actually eight dash five dash three. You see? So we'll go on and play through we'll move over here. What are selves generally in the position where that when official would be

5 (15m 15s):

Okay,

Bob Arnone (15m 25s):

And this is what they're going to say. So a lot of things, they just start going through that wing officials. Mine is that players coming towards that pylon, uh, what is he going to make? A lot of things is going to go through his mind there, you know, is he, is the player going to maintain control of the ball? Is he going to hit? The pylon is going to reach beyond the pylon. This is going to hit the Taiwan first, all those things are going to determine the outcome of that play.

Bob Arnone (15m 57s):

And then of course, if you've got your other crew that can help, uh, saying things from different angles, that's a good opportunity to communicate with them and make sure that, uh, uh, you call that play. Right. Okay. I'm going to, uh, show some quick changes that we did to the Get It Right program this year, uh, when we started off and we started doing all the roles in alphabetical order.

Bob Arnone (16m 29s):

So just like you're following an index in the rule book, that's one way that you can find a rule. A, we got a lot of it's more like w we had gotten a lot of requests about, uh, Hey, I need to give a class on the kicking game. Uh, which rules should I do? Well now you're trying to go through alphabetically and try to find what those are. Well, now we have the rule book view as we call it Right. So now we got all the 10 rules is laid out in the rule book there.

Bob Arnone (17m 1s):

And if you're giving a class on your kicking game, or if you just want to study the rules on a kicking game, and you go into rule six, you want to look at kickoff and other free text and section one, you go there, uh, you want to know what a popup kick looks like. You click on that, and it takes you right to the animation. And then here, you can see what that pop up kick looks like you to see books from there. We do the play through, and you have it for it.

Bob Arnone (17m 34s):

So those back judges or whoever you got up there on the on case rate, kick line, and then you have the opportunity to set up here, but put yourself in position of what that's going to look like and run that over and over and train your brain. So you understand what that, what that is it wasn't that quick hop. You got to call that bed. We did a comparison on this one, too. So on the right side, you're going to see the normal kind of pooch kick and kick it straight up into the air.

Bob Arnone (18m 9s):

And you can compare that what it looks like on the left or the pop up cake. So that's one of the benefits then of going into the rule book view. And then you can go back to the alphabetical view, whatever, whatever preference you may have, And those that, uh, and not seeing the program before we started off by building the mechanics module, uh, we started with crew sizes, have five and seven.

Bob Arnone (18m 40s):

And since that time we've expanded to three, four, five, 607 and understand that you all do a lot of five and for me, And so we can look at something like gold and going in most of the time when we're doing a training, we like using the bird's eye view, just because of, uh, It the way that it shows relative where all the officials are, where are they looking and what their field of focus on a beat, these green markers, tell you what your duties and responsibilities are at the beginning of the play at the snack, burn, the playing, and then what you do at the end, the quarterback.

Participant (19m 27s):

Oh, gentlemen.

Bob Arnone (19m 30s):

Yes, sir.

Participant (19m 31s):

Oh God. Uh, sir.

Bob Arnone (19m 38s):

Yes. Does that mean somebody have a question? Yes.

Participant (19m 41s):

Yes. Can you go, did you name a rule six and section one, correct? Right. Okay. I got it. I got IT go ahead and continue with, go ahead.

Bob Arnone (19m 53s):

Oh, okay. Um, okay. Now, one of the things that we tend to do when we're trying to teach new officials, uh, first of all, we gotta teach them not to watch the game, but then some of the language we use can sometimes be confusing. So what's going to happen in this play is to run. Who's going to go off to our RIGHT and we're going to tell The the wing officials over here, who's the, who's the linesman, uh, he's going to become the covering of fit. Shall we want him to have a tiger field of view and the line judge, over on the other side, he's going to do backside officiating.

Bob Arnone (20m 29s):

Uh, he needs to have a wider field of view. Well, when you're trying to say that to somebody new, what did they really hear? What did they understand? So what we do is we put those vision cones in motion. You can see how the crews functioning together and had to cover that play runners, coming to this side, you can see that vision come Get narrow for the linesman. And then the line judge has taken up this wider field of view.

Bob Arnone (21m 0s):

Now I can bring those back a little bit. And with this being and a three D mode, I can go over here and click on this line. And now we can save a play from his perspective on the field. And we have this spotlight effect around here that replicates what is happening with that vision count. So the runners coming here, you could see that a spotlight effect tightening up and kind of get into his mind that he needs to tighten up his field of you and watch us are coming in.

Participant (21m 32s):

Can you go to It

Bob Arnone (21m 35s):

Now we set this up that the runner did not score a touchdown. You just called this a little bit short, so you can watch this and a third person view, and then this is gold line going in. So we want the officials first move, going to the goal line. We can see what he's doing, he's short. So we sat on the call. And last year, when we changed to, uh, 42nd play clocks, we added in that, uh, you know, he's got the The ready going on there.

Bob Arnone (22m 10s):

So I'm the free camera. When we play this, you're going to see that the 42nd clock ahead and start to run it. So we got both the 45 and the 40 and the 25 second clock I implemented in the mechanics this year. And we did that last year. That's also synchronized with the game clock up there. I can privately click a couple seconds off and off of that. So everything is synchronized.

Bob Arnone (22m 40s):

Uh, and each one of these plates, we show a couple more positions on that plate. You can also go to your four man crew size, uh, when you're, what we use those for a lot of times is, and if you have to talk about the differences of who's doing what And a crew of four crew and crew second five on there, you can just toggle back and forth any place during the course of the play. And you can see what the, what the different positioning might be.

Dennis Barela (23m 16s):

Can you go back to that, Bob and show the view of the umpire on that crew of four versus five, please?

Bob Arnone (23m 26s):

Okay. And then we're going to start, we've got the glows are probably going to be about the same. Go ahead and let me see. We'll watch. Well, I can do this point. This is going ahead and turn all these guys off except for the umpire. And we can watch what he's looking at.

Ken Adent (23m 57s):

That's so cool. It is angled from the field view is his tunnel vision. There you go. There's no training...

https://behind-the-flag.captivate.fm/episode/get-it-right

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/a0cb8820-5da6-4ba5-8461-b7f0dbf53f1d/image008.jpg"/>
Dennis Barela and Ken Adent

<itunes:duration>43:25</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>false</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>1</itunes:episode><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><podcast:episode>1</podcast:episode><podcast:season>1</podcast:season><itunes:summary>Get It Right</itunes:summary><itunes:author>Dennis Barela and Ken Adent</itunes:author>
