Ep. 58: Kelley Ranly, COWGIRL 30 Under 30, Extension Program Specialist, Texas A&M

Kelley Ranly serves as an Extension Program Specialist, Leadership Coordinator for Texas 4-H and Texas A&M AgriLife Extension where she is responsible for coordinating and organizing statewide agricultural leadership programs for high-school-aged youth across Texas. In this role, she also oversees Texas 4-H Horse Validation and is on the leadership team for the Texas State 4-H Horse Show. Kelley began working for Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Texas 4-H while she was a student at Texas A&M. She worked in Texas Steer and Heifer Validation for two years before moving into the role of assisting with youth leadership programs. She continued to work in this capacity for about three years before moving into her current position. Kelley recognized her love for agriculture and the western way of life at a very young age. She grew up showing livestock and rodeoing, but really found her niche in the horse world while attending college at Texas A&M University. Kelley obtained a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science with a minor in Business Administration at Texas A&M University before going on to complete her Master of Agribusiness, also at Texas A&M. While completing her degrees, Kelley was a member of the Texas A&M Ranch Horse Team for four years, which uncovered her deep love for reined cow horses. In her spare time, Kelley also enjoys working with livestock and hay producers to maximize profitability on their pastures, serving at her church, and watching Aggie sports. Kelley has been recognized as part of COWGIRL Magazine's 30 Under 30 Class of 2024.

As a young girl, Megan Ray was enamored with watching bulls at Ellensburg Rodeo’s Xtreme Bulls performance, so it’s only fate that she finds herself working for the top bull riding organization in the world. Megan is the Social Media Coordinator for the Professional Bull Riders. She is accountable for strategically planning, creating, and executing social media content across a multitude of platforms and has achieved significant follower growth to expand the reach of the PBR. Megan is passionate about creating captivating and engaging content that shares the stories of the Western industry with potential fans. Megan developed her niche in social media by building the Ellensburg Rodeo social media channels from the ground up back in 2019. Four years later, as the Digital Content Manager, she strategically planned and executed a dynamic campaign in celebration of the Rodeo’s centennial anniversary. In her free time, you can find Megan on the back of a horse and actively volunteering with the local 4Hhorse program. Megan has also been honored as part of COWGIRL Magazine's 30 Under 30 Class of 2024.

Sidney Abbott serves as Head of Research and Cattle Management at OT Feedyard & Research Center, where she is responsible for executing protocol, maintaining animal welfare, data collection, and corresponding with scientists and product developers for some of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, she is the 51% owner of Abbott Hay Co., making it a majority minority-owned agriculture company. Together with her husband, their company produces 22,000 tons of roughage and market to dairies and feedyards across the Texas Panhandle. Sidney is also an honoree of COWGIRL Magazine's 30 Under 30 Class of 2024.

Ep. 53: Alexa Wilcox, COWGIRL 30 Under 30, Head Women's Rodeo Coach, New Mexico Jr College

Alexa Major Wilcox grew up on a cattle ranch in southeastern Colorado and was actively involved in 4H and FFA throughout her childhood. She found a passion for horses and rodeo early on and continued to pursue that passion, rodeoing in high school and in college at both Texas Tech University and Oklahoma State University. While finishing her master’s at Oklahoma State, Alexa also coached the rodeo team. She has a passion for leadership and following her master’s graduation, spent five years serving with the non-profit Field of Hope in Uganda to empower others through agricultural education and extension. She is proud to now serve as the Women’s Rodeo Coach at New Mexico Junior College while still breakaway roping at amateur and professional rodeos and American Quarter Horse (AQHA) shows. Alexa married CD Wilcox in 2018 and enjoys working and training horses alongside him. In 2021, Alexa submitted a rule change to the AQHA to add the Open Breakaway class to the show docket. After over a year of campaigning and collaborating with other breakaway ropers, AQHA approved the class. Alexa was honored to be the inaugural Champion of the Open Stakes class at the 2022 AQHA World Show. Alexa has been recognized as part of COWGIRL Magazine's 30 Under 30 program in 2024!

Growing up, Hannah was always around agriculture and the western lifestyle. Her biggest regret, even now, has been not rodeoing herself or being involved in a more ‘hands-on’ way. However, through that, she's found exactly where she belongs. She has found herself sharing the unique and moving stories of all those directly involved every day, and she gets to travel to events, meet some truly amazing people and share with the world why we shouldn’t, and simply can’t, let this lifestyle die out. For Hannah there is something so fulfilling about preserving and promoting our western heritage on a daily basis; and she hopes to continue sharing her love for this way of life with others for years to come!

Hannah works full-time for the North Texas Fair & Rodeo in Denton, Texas, and she writes and creates content for various western publications and brands within the industry, including Cowboy Lifestyle Network, The Arena Press, Cutting Horse Chatter, Quarter Horse News, Western Horseman and Cavender's.

Ashley Starrett, is a Doer, a Dentist, and a purveyor of all things Denim. Hence the name of of her equine dental business, ‘Denim Dentistry.’ She's a real-life tooth fairy, but for horses! Ashley is from the small rural community of Unionville, Missouri where everyone knows everyone, there are more cows than people, and one blinking stop light reminds you of a slower pace. It’s rural as rural can be. From a young age she was surrounded by community and service-led individuals. These people taught her to serve in 4-H, FFA, churches, civic clubs and become an agricultural entrepreneur. They each helped instill a doer mentality into her life. They taught her to act locally and think globally. With this mindset Ashley graduated college with not one, but two bachelors. She also has a master’s of Science in Agriculture degree and is currently pursuing a Ph.D. at Texas Tech School of Veterinary Medicine in Amarillo, Texas. Ashley is also a three-time published equine researcher and author to the children’s book, “A Tale of the Horse Tooth Fairy.” Additionally, Ashley has been recognized as part of COWGIRL Magazine's 30 Under 30, class of 2024.

Ep. 49: Callie Masar, COWGIRL 30 Under 30, Sponsorship Manager of the Colorado State Fair & Rodeo

Callie Masar, a member of the Programming and Partnership team at the Colorado State Fair and Rodeo, collaborates with private renters and organizations throughout the year to coordinate and schedule horse shows and rodeos. The overarching objective is to expand the presence of Western sports in the community while offering a top-notch equestrian venue. During the 2023 fair, Callie, working alongside the rodeo committee, successfully coordinated and produced four sold-out PRCA performances, Ranch Rodeo, and Celebración de los Charros. Looking forward, her aim is to contribute to the growth and enhancement of the rodeo program while nurturing partnerships vital for supporting her home state's fair. Callie is responsible for managing sponsorship and rodeo personnel agreements, drawing upon her passion for promoting the Western Industry, cultivated through her participation in youth horse shows and rodeos, which she has continued throughout her career. Her experience extends to her time at Cinch Jeans and Shirts, where she handled sponsorships benefiting various organizations and individuals in the Western industry, offering monetary support and in-kind assets to rodeo athletes and organizations nationwide. Previously employed at Professional Bull Riders, LLC, Callie played a pivotal role in promoting the Western lifestyle by organizing behind-the-scenes experiences for ticket holders and sponsors, aimed at exciting and educating attendees about the Western industry. Her event planning efforts consistently received positive feedback.

Tyler Schuster is a fifth-generation rancher from Brackettville, Texas. A graduate of Tarleton State University and Texas A&M University, Schuster currently serves as the Manager, Leadership Development for Texas & Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) based in Fort Worth, Texas. In this role, Schuster leads all organizational efforts to prepare and educate the next generation of cattle raisers. In 2022, Schuster's signature TSCRA project launched: a youth program that allows the next generation of ag producers the opportunity to develop a stronger understanding of the cattle industry and its processes "from pasture to plate". Since moving to Fort Worth, Schuster has become an active volunteer at the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo. When not traveling the Lone Star State promoting the beef industry, Schuster can be found working alongside her mom on her family's ranch or recording new episodes of her podcast, Basically Famous. Basically Famous arose out of Schuster's desire to showcase stories of people, women in particular, in the western and agriculture industries.

Erin is the Chief Executive Officer of Days End Farm Horse Rescue (DEFHR), based in Woodbine, Maryland, and has been with the organization since 2005. As a Maryland native, Erin grew up active in the horse industry and was involved with Pony Club and the Potomac Valley Dressage Association. Her career in equine welfare has also led her to become certified as an equine investigator and animal control officer and she also serves as a member of Maryland Professional Animal Workers Association, a Board Member representing Associations of The Maryland Horse Council, a Board Member representing Humane Societies of The Maryland Horse Industry Board, and an Advisory Council member of The Homes for Horses Coalition.

Kim Rounds can be described as aggressively supportive and wildly ambitious, and she has carved herself a niche within the Ag industry to braid in her love of cow horses.

Her schedule is full as the Specialty Beef Program Manager/Social Media Manager for Five Rivers Cattle Feeding and the head of Marketing and Sales for her “side hustle”, Shining KL Partners. Her love of all things equine and bovine have brought her to be a groom for an international show jumper, a National Beef Ambassador, a teaching assistant for CSU’s Legends of Ranching class, back-to-back top 5 finishes at the National Reined Cow Horse Association’s Celebration of Champions, and in 2021 was a part of both COWGIRL Magazine’s 30 under 30 and Northern Colorado’s 40 Under 40 presented by Biz West. Her weekdays are spent at the feedyard, overseeing specialty beef programs, taking pictures of cattle, giving tours, and generating content while her evenings, weekend, and every bit of spare time are spent riding her cow horses.

He is also a Fellow in the Worshipful Company of Farriers from the United Kingdom. (The Dressage Foundation is given to a horse and rider pair whose combined ages total more than 100 years old, who are able to ride down the center line and perform a dressage test.)

She spent 20 years working in daily journalism, rode the hunters and equitation through intercollegiate in college, and still considers herself a rider if she get on for an hour a year.

Ep. 31: Equestrian Photojournalist, Nancy Jaffer

Award-winning freelance equestrian photojournalist Nancy Jaffer produced a weekly horse sports column for The Star-Ledger of New Jersey for 43 years. It was the largest paper in the country to feature such a weekly column about the equestrian scene, in addition to Nancy’s event coverage from competitions around the world.

Nancy covered nine Olympics, every World Equestrian Games since they began in 1990 and stand-alone show jumping world championships in 1982 and 1986. She also has written about more than 20 World Cup finals in show jumping and dressage, and reported on the National Finals Rodeo a number of times.

After her work with The Star-Ledger wrapped up, Nancy started her own website, www.nancyjaffer.com. She continues to freelance for various websites and publications, including Horse Sport, Practical Horseman and Horse & Hound.

She has several books to her credit, including “Riding Through” with Debbie McDonald. and edited the U.S. Equestrian Team Foundation’s “Riding for America” and “Riding for the Team,” which came out in 2019.

Not only does he oversee more than 200 mares and foals, but he also manages the sales prep aspect of their operation preparing quarter horse race horses for yearling select sales as well as the many other disciplines that come to Vista for their expertise from Arabians to reining horses to barrel horses and more. As a graduate of Colorado State University’s College of Agricultural Sciences, Tanner returns to campus often to support and to be a part of the Legends of Ranching Program, the Rodeo Club, and even to guest lecture for the colt starting class. In addition, over the past year Tanner has served as a Director on the Board for the Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association's Racing Division.

Ep 23: Kentucky Horse Park Mounted Police, Capt. Lisa Rakes

Captain Lisa Rakes joined the Lexington Police Department in 1990 and served as a patrol officer, mounted police officer and instructor, defensive tactics instructor, recruiter, field training officer, honor guard officer and a member of the emergency response team. Captain Rakes was a member of the Lexington Mounted Police Unit from 1996 until 2013 when she retired to join the Kentucky Horse Park Police.

Captain Rakes now leads the Kentucky Horse Park Police who consists of 10 sworn officers and 4 civilian staff members. Captain Rakes has attended and completed numerous clinics and schools in the United States, Canada and London England, to not only improve her equitation and obstacle skills, but to build a better relationship with her horse. She has been a guest instructor and competed in numerous mounted police competitions and events.

This episode features two women from the Working Ranch Cowboys Association: Kaycee Hooper, WRCA Foundation Manager and Payton Holtkamp, WRCA Membership and Digital Marketing Coordinator.

Kaycee grew up in Northern New Mexico on the WS Ranch. After high school she attended Panhandle State University on a basketball scholarship, and she graduated with a major in Agricultural Education and a minor in Animal Science. After finishing at PSU, she took her first teaching and rodeo coach job at Cochise College in Douglas, Arizona and to-date she has taught agri-science in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Today Kaycee makes her home in Amarillo and works for the Working Ranch Cowboys Association as the Foundation Manager.

Payton grew up in Elkhart, KS and was highly involved in 4H, FFA, and Athletics. After high school she went on to play college basketball at Seward County Community College in Liberal, KS where she received her Associates degree in Ag Business and a minor in Agronomy. Since Payton was a kid her family has been coming to the WRCA World Championship Ranch Rodeo as spectators and she even helped with program sales in the past. Today she is one of the three WRCA Staff members and her title is the Working Ranch Cowboys Association Membership & Digital Marketing Coordinator.

Christy Landwehr has been active in the horse industry for over 35 years. With an undergraduate degree in public relations and speech communication from California State University Fullerton and a graduate degree in mass communication and journalism from University of Colorado at Boulder, Christy has vast experience in marketing and business. She was the Sponsorship and Youth Programs Manager for the Arabian Horse Association, a trainer for Skill Path Seminars, and the Development Director for The Urban Farm that works with at-risk youth in Denver. Currently, she is the Chief Executive Officer for the Certified Horsemanship Association, a non-profit 501(c)3 association whose purpose is to promote excellence in safety throughout the equine industry. Kathie Riley is an attorney as a sole practitioner, and her practice emphasis is in civil litigation and mediation with a particular interest in agricultural, equine and rural issues. Kathie also teaches agricultural law at Colorado State University, and is a guest lecturer in the CSU Equine Sciences Program. Kathie shares what she has learned as an entrepreneur, as well as in her previous roles including general counsel for the Colorado Department of Agriculture as an Assistant Attorney General, the Deputy District Attorney in Jackson County, CO, and as a Major in the Judge Advocate General’s Corp in the Colorado Army National Guard and the Army Reserves.
