He details his educational background, his long professional career that includes writing the UN SDG manifesto, participation in various UN collective systems, and a quick overview of his books.

As we're heading into COP28 this year, Buckley sheds light on what went wrong in the previous huddles. He highlights the significance of the Club of Rome, whose original climate report from 1972 serves as a guiding pillar for the UN's climate efforts. He believes the Club of Rome's work provides a crucial framework for understanding the climate crisis. Looking ahead to COP28, he expresses cautious optimism, noting that the region understands the impact of food shortages and the need to limit growth. However, he also acknowledges the controversies surrounding COP27, which he deems a complete failure due to a lack of action and wasting valuable time.

There's an urgent need for funding to achieve sustainable development goals. While the figure of $95 trillion required to meet these goals set out in the Paris Agreement may seem daunting, Buckley explains that in 2015, we spent $89 trillion on high-carbon emission scenarios, such as gasoline and diesel cars, which could have been redirected towards sustainability efforts.

Buckley points out that the UN is simply a platform to unite member countries and cannot force them to take action on climate change. The current system of negotiations is difficult, slow, and inefficient, with progress being impeded by politics and a lack of political will. There are politics both within and between countries, making it challenging to find a way forward. He highlights the negative impact that leaders like Trump and Bolsonaro have had on the climate agenda, derailing progress and creating further division. He also discusses the economics of the climate crisis, noting that the current economic system is not working and is contributing to the issue. He highlights the need for more discussion and education on economic models that promote sustainability and notes that sustainable organizations have shown resilience during hard economic times.

He further elucidates the need for a new global mission beyond economic growth and globalization. The purpose of existing as a society should be to make the world work for 100% of humanity in the shortest possible time through spontaneous cooperation without ecological offense and disadvantage for anyone. However, our current models are obsolete, and we need to move towards a new model of economics and resource management. Buckley also touches on the fact that many experts are only focused on one facet of a complete system and that we need to bring together leading experts, thought leaders, polymaths, and philosophers in a fellowship to solve problems independently. He believes that the world needs a different model of cooperation and that the current model of global competitive systems is flawed.

Our conversation also delves into the idea that we need to shift our focus from reductionism to promoting equality so that no one has to worry about food, shelter, and other basic human needs. We discuss the concept of global hectares per person and the need for good stewardship of the Earth's resources. Ultimately, humanity needs to break free from the old ways of thinking and move towards a world that works for everyone. Buckley believes that we are still stuck in the Stone Age and that we need to evolve with the exponential rate at which the world is changing.

To achieve this, the world needs symbiosis and collaboration, just like any other living system. Applying models of cooperation in business, organizations, and our daily lives will lead to greater prosperity. Buckley warns that civilization models that rely on hierarchy and divide humans into classes, such as farmers at the bottom and a few elites at the top, always lead to collapse sooner or later. He advocates for three pillars of sustainability: economics, innovation, and consciousness of regenerative futurism. He believes that we need to understand economic models inside out, as they affect us, and be able to speak about alternative models, such as circular economics. He calls for innovation that solves human suffering in grand global challenges and stresses that humanity needs to make six major transformations (digital transformation is just one of them) before achieving sustainoscence.

In the end, Buckley offers insight into the concrete steps we can take to make a difference. It's very different from his previous work, "Evolving Ourselves," which was a mind-bending exploration of how humanity is reshaping its genetic future. When the episode starts, he gives us a background of what led him to write his new book. In the rest of the episode, we discuss various aspects of the ethics debate in a technological age.

Ethics is not a very popular subject. Many people consider it boring. After all, most of us already know what’s right and wrong in our current social construct. We are familiar with how to behave with others, etc. However, what if there’s a 180 degrees shift in what’s right and wrong? Today, a lot of the changes in ethics are driven by technology. And when the change in technology accelerates, the change in ethics will also accelerate. Are we ready to face that challenge?

Juan believes technology will enable humanity to accept any such shift in ethics. There are a lot of things that technology makes faster, better, and cheaper. For instance, most humans are not vegetarian today. Once synthetic meat becomes cheaper than natural meat, killing billions of animals for meat will become a much harder position to defend. It will force humanity to rethink its ethics regarding killing animals. We rationalize ethics, and once we have an alternative, change will come easy.

But, to do that, we need to learn to hold two conflicting theories in mind. We may not always be right. Therefore, we should have an open mind about people with opposing views. Just like we judge the actions and beliefs of people from 30 years ago through the realities of today, we will be judged in the future by our future generations. Right and wrong can change. Most people believe if the other half disagrees with a viewpoint, they are such and such (a label). In reality, 98 percent of the people are decent human beings trying to do the right thing. Labeling them makes it easy to “otherize’ them. That's why in the heart of cultural wars today, you will find strong moral declarations.

The discussion then shifts to important ethical fights of the present. Juan considers nuclear proliferation, climate change, wealth concentration, and wealth inequality the biggest ethical struggles today. Unfortunately, nuclear proliferation has gotten off the minds of many people. In a time when more people can proliferate, the rise of fanatical actors has rendered MAD ineffective. The traditional architecture of stability has fallen apart. Similarly, there are the problems of climate change and wealth inequality. The time to do something about it is now because we have options to move forward globally. Otherwise, our future generations will judge us harsher than we judge our past generations.

Juan also talks in detail about big ethical considerations in neo-biology. We are going through a neo-biological revolution period. New discoveries are opening up new debates and new avenues of moral considerations. For example, we can freeze sperms today and have identical twins 20 years apart. If you bring a couple from 30 years ago to the present, the mere idea of frozen sperms will give them a huge shock. Likewise, if your grandchildren bring you forward 30 years in the future, you will be gobsmacked by how fast technology moved.

Today, we know it's a lot safer to bring a baby to term in a synthetic womb. You can bring a baby to term far earlier. It's a lot easier to temper with the genetic code and take out the cancerous genes, etc. These advancements are opening a new Pandora box of ethical debates, but the way we adopt these moral changes will determine the future of humanity.

The world and humanity evolve with evolving technology. For thousands of years, we believed the earth was flat. Then Galileo's telescope radically changed our entire perception of the universe. Such radical changes are now occurring within 2 to 3 years. So, we need to stop and ask ourselves these questions. How do we want to move forward? Sure, we may not come up with solid answers yet, but it's still a conversation worth having. At the same time, we need to approach this topic with humility. There aren't always two sides to a label. In fact, there's an entire spectrum to accurately outline the complexity of a given topic. As right and wrong can change, we should also be more flexible with our viewpoints.

Key Moments:

● [00:46] – Juan Enriquez Introduction

● [01:58] – What made him write “Right/Wrong: How Technology Transforms Our Ethics?

● [04:08] – Ethics as a functional conversation for people

● [05:09] – How technology flips our notions of right and wrong

● [15:04] – Why making strong ethical and moral declarations today is bad

● [23:18] – Important ethical fights today that will impact the quality of life of our future generations

● [33:18] – Big ethical considerations in neurobiology today

● [43:56] – Things we should be doing in evolving our biology

Quotes:

There are a lot of things technology makes faster, better, cheaper

Most of us are not vegan because the alternative is very difficult for a lot of people

Rules change, and if you are not educated in a way that you keep learning… you end up on the wrong side of history faster and faster…

When you are so busy judging the present and past, you don't look at possibilities of the future.

Why let people starve when you can feed them? Ground – Fifth Phase: How do we ground that down to create a sense of kinship?

All living systems are self-operating mechanisms. But, we always learn some lessons in one world that can be brought into the other. Binaries create competition and division. Whether it's spirituality, philosophy, physics, mechanics, or metaphysics, bringing different worlds together can help humanity cooperate rather than compete.

Today, we need new technologies that are capitalistic but still provide a positive impact on humanity and the world. We need businesses that operate less like machines and more as living organisms. There's a lot to learn from nature. We can replicate how nature creates no waste. Perhaps a new hierarchy of needs would be appropriate in which the base level is “We” rather than “I." The rules of the game have already been broken by COVID. It's the right time to shift and change and create new, better and sustainable technologies.

The same can be said about our political systems. We are still using a 100-200 years old top-down authoritarian approach to manage countries. Our politics is politics of divide and conquer. However, borders have become more fluid in this digital day and age. Organizations have become more influential like we see different organizations taking steps about vaccine passports. Humanity needs to figure out how to stop technology from enabling these old colonial structures.

An important question – in this regard – is to ask yourself, "What type of ancestors do you want to be?" At any moment, we are already an ancestor for the next generations. If anything, the pandemic has shown that we are all in this together. If we are to survive, we have to survive together. If we are to thrive, we have to thrive together. Therefore, we need to change our storytelling framework, recognize the value a person brings and take a more altruistic approach to tackle problems.

The biggest lottery in the world is where we are born. Think about it, we don't choose our nationality or race. Luck gives some of us an unfair advantage and deprives others. Racism is a strategy to maintain the same process of colonization and colonialism. So when the system offers preferential treatment, we need to recognize our privilege and think about a positive contribution. The more people recognize their privilege, the more things will change.

This brings us to the final question, what’s the solution to disentangle this Gordian knot? Answer: Make people think. Make them think differently. Value those who are born different. Appreciate those who think differently. Everyone can become a critical thinker, problem-solver, innovator, and futurist. It's just that we don't lean in on these abilities. Only through collective efforts will we leave a better world for our future generations. In the final moments of the podcast, Adiah talks about her latest venture, "Living Library." It’s an attempt to look deeply at micro and meta-narratives, i.e., how we use words to validate ourselves.

Key Moments:

● [00:47] – Adah Parris Introduction

● [01:30] – What is a Futurist

● [06:11] – Cyborg Shamanism

● [12:04] How to look for technologies that are a capitalistic but still positive impact on each other and the world

● [18:00] Technologizing of human beings

● [23:54] The need for a living systems approach

● [25:40] political systems in the digital age

● [31:32] money, philanthropy, and effective altruism

● [34:44] The need for a new storytelling approach

● [42:17] The biggest lottery in the world

● [50:30] How to change?

● [55:10] Adah’s Future Project: Living library

Quotes:

Technology is not just something digital or algorithmic. On the bright side, we have the EU commission announcing plans for forced labor import ban, the successes of the 30 x 30 movement, the Paris accord and similar steps taken by governments in the USA, China and India. On the negative side, we have the reactionary capitalist businesses which exploit the natural resources to death and would not go without a fight. This discursive battle is but just one aspect of the larger political and physical battle.

Biological diversity is just important as human cultural diversity. We are part of nature. Our body cells are part of the biosphere – from the cradle to the grave. Whenever there has been a mass extinction event, about 70 per cent of the species don't make it through the churn. If it happens now, chances are, we won’t be able to make it, so there is no success for humans without success for the whole biosphere. They are knitted into one.

In the final moments of the podcast, we discuss the bare minimum that humanity needs to work on now in order to have a desirable, viable, thriving future for humanity. This includes women rights, social justice, balanced biosphere, push for democracy worldwide, neoliberal economics and growth expansion that translates into a better quality – rather than quantity – of life. Humanity co-evolved with this planet, and only here can we thrive. That’s why human life in space is just a fantasy of escape, offering no real solution to the problem.

"We are an extraordinary expression of the complexity of life…Possibly the biggest leap we could make to have a thriving future for humanity is by actually being just an Earthling. Sure, there are other worlds out there, but we are expressions of this world alone."

Key Moments:

● [00:36] – Kim Stanley Robinson’s introduction

● [08:06] – Stan’s atypical writing style and the audience reaction

● [11:51] – Novel as a way to transform culture and people’s thinking

● [18:13] – Economics and capitalism

● [33:38] – Neoliberalism as an alternate to capitalism

● [38:52] – Is there any hope for Europe?

● [48:08] – A desirable, viable, thriving future for humanity

● [53:18] – De-growth and post-capitalism

● [1:00:20] – Is human civilisation off-planet possible?

Quotes:

I myself am a novelist, and I don’t know what a novel is, but I know it’s bigger than what they were thinking about.

Central bankers are not really the drivers [of capitalism], but they are the clutch.

Power is a drug, and wealth is power.

Instrumentation already exists (the rule of law, legislation, tax regulations) and can be applied to make a much flatter, biosphere-friendly, socially just political economy.

Biological diversity is easily as important as human cultural diversity.

We have to pay ourselves as humans to take care of – in a steward’s way – the rest of the biosphere.

There's no success for humans without success for the whole biosphere.

It will never be a question of human welfare vs environmental welfare. They are knitted into one.

The notion of growth expansion should be translated into the level of quality [of life] rather than quantity.

I don't think humans can prosper off the earth, over the long haul.

The fact that we can’t get to the stars does not make the solar system less beautiful and un-interesting.

Further References:

The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson:

https://www.amazon.com/Ministry-Future-Kim-Stanley-Robinson/dp/0316300136

USA trilogy (by John Dos Passos)"

https://www.amazon.com/USA-42nd-Parallel-1919-Money/dp/1883011140

Neo-liberalism:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neoliberalism

The 30 x 30 Movement:

https://www.wilderness.org/key-issues/30-x-30-movement

Little, Big by John Crawley:

https://www.amazon.com/Little-Big-John-Crowley/dp/0061120057

If you found this podcast valuable, rate, share, and comment. Full Show Notes:

Modern healthcare and medicine is a framework modeled to understand how things go wrong in our bodies. However, it doesn't address the deeper, more central questions of our lives: How to live life to the fullest, live in coherence with what we are here to do, and what it means to live your best life? Finding answers to these questions is essential to understanding the full capacity of our health.

The map that can help us unlock this full capacity is "reconnecting to the four disconnections." During the podcast, Dr. David Tusek explains what these four disconnections (or quadrants of reality) are. He further elucidates how reconnection can lead to a greater awareness of the fundamental parts of our body – not just the structural elements that comprise our organism.

The first step to health and fitness is consciousness. Consciousness not just to our body but also to the people around us, our community, and planet earth. Sure, exercising and staying fit is a way to health, but it's a reductionist solution, to measure health by a measure of consumptive units. To thrive we need a profound connection with ourselves to experience fully being human. For this we may need coaches that have a rather holistic sense of the body and human consciousness.

In Dr. David Tusek’s words, we need the “Bruce Lee” move to transform our healthcare system. Take all of the best parts of today’s system, add stuff that we are missing and remove anything that isn’t working. We also need mentors who can help us re-establish connection with our body and our loved ones for meaningful relationships. We are what we eat. Therefore, we don't just need doctors who prescribe medicine. We should also incorporate our food producers into the healthcare system. Provide them incentives to have a hyper-local food ecosystem.

The pandemic has blown the cover off of our wounds. In the words of Dr. David Tusek, the pandemic showed us that “"We are sicker than we even realize." That we are in the midst of multiple simultaneous pandemics. It has given us a chance to change course and heal the deep core traumas that needed healing for a long time. Our fundamental societal framework needs new framing. Only a healthcare system that takes a holistic approach – one that looks at the wellness of people, soil, and our relationships as well – can contribute and heal the body of our life.

"Our body is the vehicle of the self-expression of our life."

“I believe that the deepest form of health that we can experience is by reconnecting to the four disconnections."

"It's never been about you. It's always about what is your gift to offer to the others."

“We can actually be golden mirrors for one another."
