Joey's Mets on the other hand, are making a push for what could be a really fun post-season. We do eventually get around to talking games: some Cult of the Lamb, some College Football, some Space Marine 2.

The series will focus on the dynamics of playing games with different groups of people in my life, how those dynamics shift, and how the experience changes as a result. I am also conducting several interviews in the coming weeks. We will see the return of Joe Erskine and Jon Everist, as well as a few more. The stream is returning to Mondays and Wednesdays. And finally, I am pushing the Patreon again.

I find it so much more gratifying and have received far more feedback spending a few weeks on a piece, ruminating, than when I slap together a 1300 word movie review the day after. It all just ends up feeling like hunting for the best tagline rather than the best thought. So, in the interest of enjoying watching movies in a critical capacity, I am transitioning the short "reviews" into audio bits I'm calling Cutscenes!

On this first edition of Cutscenes I talk about Disney's Elemental, Wes Anderson's Asteroid City, and the new comedy No Hard Feelings. in the future I will do one movie per little episode. Most of the time. Cheers!

Well…5 months after completing Citizen Sleeper, a slick and meaningful TTRPG inspired game by solo developer Gareth Damian Martin (Jump Over the Age), Caleb finished his piece on the game and then had the opportunity to talk to Gareth about what he calls his favorite game of all time.

Gareth and Caleb talk about all sorts of things. From street food vendors working out of the back of their scooters, to living above the remains of civil war embattlements and plague mass graves, to creating art that you hope connects with people on a personal level. There is so much in here to enjoy, so come hang out.

Episode 144: The Merit of "I Told You So"

Happy Monday everyone! The NerdyBits Show is on a bit of a hiatus as Ryan is in the process of moving AND having a baby (don't worry, we confronted him about this). So, to give you all something to listen to, Caleb sat down and recorded a solo episode last week.

It's been a long 10 years since Caleb started this website and started writing about videogames seriously. There have been victories and failures, lulls and peaks, but nevertheless, he persists. Back in college, when proposing a senior thesis, Caleb was batted down by a few professors who couldn't manage to see a way that videogames could be important. More than that, the thesis was specifically about the Assassin's Creed franchise and its potential to be a tool for learning about time periods far in the past. Since then the AC games have made their way into the academic sphere, going so far as to catch the eye of Harvard Egyptologist Peter Der Manuelian.

So, in the spirit of never letting haters get under your skin, Caleb recorded his thoughts now, as a long-time journalist, podcaster, and now Professor of Game Design at Webster University. Is it worth it to say things like, "I told you so?" Maybe...

Happy Friday folks! A few years ago Caleb stumbled across the trailer for a little indie title called FAR: Lone Sails. He was immediately smitten by the games muted color palette, striking vistas, and phenomenal score. Little did he know that he would find an experience that would help him put context to the grief of losing his grandfather.

FAR: Lone Sails helped me deeply.

Fast forward almost three years and he had the splendid opportunity to record an episode of Bounty Board with a few members from the Okomotive team! Come hang out with Caleb as he speaks with Fabio Baumgartner (Programmer and Sound Designer) and Phillip Stern (Level Designer, Artist, and Writer) about their process and the work they contributed to FAR Lone Sails and to the upcoming FAR: Changing Tides.

It is a lovely conversation that spans topics from learning to develop apart from the friends you have known for years, to quickly agreeing that burritos might be the best form of food, to knowing your own limits and maybe not playing a game if it triggers something in you.

Osama had mentioned on Twitter a few weeks ago that he wasn't sure how he was going to pick his favorite game of 2021, so I offered to have him on so we could work through it. And so we did!

We each walk through our top 5 from the last year, as well as toss up a few honorable mentions. We talk about being parents in the industry, how we approach game playing and creating with our kids, and of course we wrap the conversation with food talk. We even snuck a little bit in about our caution regarding NFTs.

Happy Wednesday folks! Long time no talk! Bounty Board is back this week to kick off a series about storytelling in games and to help us get the ball rolling we have special guest Adron Buske! Adron hosts the Fictitious Podcast a show focused on diving into the “Storytelling Craft of Science Fiction and Fantasy” (we know, its fancier than we sound…). Having met at a local gaming expo in STL called Pixel Pop a few years back, Adron and Caleb have interacted several times over the years and finally they made the time to actually record.

Together the two get into storytelling in games. For a long time games were seen as just a kids hobby, but as time has progressed, games have become more and more capable of telling truly masterful stories. Caleb and Adron discuss what works for them, what games they think of all the time, moments that captured their attention completely. They talk about many other things as well, so buckle up! Happy Friday folks! I tried to sit on this one until Monday, but I just couldn’t. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to talk to Rami Ismail. Rami is an indie developer, spokesperson, advocate for inclusion, foodie. All those things. In 2018 the Game Developer’s Choice Awards named Rami and Ambassador, making him the first Arab, and first Muslim given the award. Since then he has owned the title Ambassador.

We sat down to specifically talk about diversity and crunch in the industry at large, but what ensued was a far more broad conversation about games. Games as an entry point for unheard stories, games as almost literal magic, games as a pursuit of the cutting edge, games about food, and games as a bridge between generations. Who would have thought we would both be able to share stories about teaching our moms to play games?

Episode 131: Blaseball Returns

Happy Monday folks! On this week’s Bounty Board Caleb sat down with the manager of the Hades Tigers Twitter account, Andrew (@Dentenstein) to discuss the return of the quirky, strange, eldritch beast that is Blaseball. The baseball betting sim launched last year, while real world baseball was getting its shit together, and quickly jumped to the top of the conversation.

It is a unique game. From voting in elections to reading redacted rule books to players getting washed away to rogue umpires incinerating beloved players, Blaseball has something for almost everyone. With the Grand Siesta coming to an end, Caleb thought it would be a good idea to have Andrew back to talk about the intricacies of this new update, what he is excited about, and whether or not he sees a place for the sim to improve.

Bounty Board 100: Ubisoft Forward and Xbox Events Loom

Hey folks! Happy Friday! We did it! We made it to our 100th episode! While we didnt really plan anything special for this episode, we do cheer ourselves for the milestone (we will do something special someday, promise).

This week on Bounty Board the crew dives into their predictions for Ubisoft Forward, airing this Sunday at 12pm PT/ 2pm CT and the recently confirmed Xbox event aiming for July 23rd. There is a lot of unkowns coming from each of these events. We know we will see Assassin’s Creed, Watch Dogs, and Hyper Scape at Ubisoft’s event. Will we see Splinter Cell, Beyond Good and Evil 2, or Gods & Monsters? Who knows. Similarly we know we are going to see Halo Infinite at the Xbox event, but outside of that, it’s really up in the air.

Hey folks! Happy…Tuesday? Caleb had a crazy weekend and so didn’t get this episode uploaded until last night…So blame him for all of this. But HEY! Last week’s episode of Bounty Board is live now! Join the crew as they recount all the games they played in June!

Hey folks! Happy Friday. The video game industry has had a rough week, which is is nothing when compared to the experiences that women are sharing. The industry has a LOT of room to improve. The crew takes a moment to talk about all of the allegations from the last week and express our support of the survivors. We must do better.

The rest of out episode is dedicated to discussing how the game industry can address it’s issue of size and scale. AAA games are costing more and more to make, despite the price of games not changing. IS it time for games to reduce in scale a bit? Perhaps they should cut some filler and deliver a more tailored 20 hour experience before going for a massive 80 hour experience? It’s a multi-faceted conversation. Is it a matter of pricing? Payment models? All of the above?

We’re going to be getting video game news every week for the next month. But this begs the question: Do we really still need E3? IGN’s Summer of Gaming is well under way at this point, with a ton of announcements, segments, and interviews. We have already gotten the Escapist Indie Showcase, and 3 days of the Guerrilla Collective showing off indies.

There is a difference though, right? With all of this gaming news coming at us in a seemingly unending stream, is it too much? Join Caleb, Ryan, Ben, and Tech as they discuss whether E3 made things easier to digest or just didn’t highlight the smaller stuff like these live shows are. What is up nerds!? We are all finding ways to socialize with the people we can no longer visit in person. For many of us that has led to long hours online, playing games, trying out new things. For Caleb and Ryan that has meant diving head first into Stardew Valley. For Caleb and Ben the high seas have salted our faces. There are thousands of games to explore in these trying times, and so many people have backlogs to dig through so the Bounty Board crew asked each other the question, “Are games made to be a social medium?”

What is up fellow nerds?! Bounty Board returns this week to talk about…well…games! We are gearing up for a big 2020 and busting through our backlogs in the meantime. This episode Caleb, Ryan, and Ben just kinda get into the weeds. They talk Call of Duty, Star Wars Battle Royale, medieval battle royale, Battlefield 1776, and somehow the conversation got to a place where the words “kid on a stick” were used.

In the coming weeks we are going to be getting back to our more organized format, but this last month of open format hangout has been fun and we want to incorporate it into the swing more. What’s up everyone!? How is it going? Bet you are about to be doing a lot better! This week’s episode of Bounty Board is LIVE now! Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was absolutely massive, with a sprawling map littered with miscellaneous tasks and activities. Breakpoint is pretty similar in scale. Maybe it’s just Ubisoft games?

The crew gets into the weeds a bit in this one, as they are wont to do. The discussion veers into the overloaded Fall release schedule, whether games have always been long, the ability for indie titles to be shorter, the impetus for AAA studios to create groundbreaking, and large-scale titles. Bounty Board 065: Multiplayer Dependency

What’s up everyone! Eric is away again (don’t worry, we miss him more), but Caleb, Ryan and Ben hold it down on this week’s episode of Bounty Board! Join the trio as they debate whether or not the game industry is becoming too dependent on player interaction, leaving games feeling hollow when played alone.

Caleb has been tied up with Breakpoint for the last few weeks with no one to join him, so he leads the charge on this question. The crew discusses games that allow co-op and solo play, but where the solo play feels lacking. We wanted to go more in depth than we could on our Unionization episode, so we went straight to the source! Our conversation with Kevin was great, and covered anything from European laws that protect their workers, to what a game engine really is. There is a lot of value in this talk.

What’s up everyone! It’s that time again! Eric is away on a work trip, so this week three of the Bounty Board crew members return to discuss the lasting power of the Battle Royale game type (mode?). Fortnite is two years old. PUBG two and a half. How have those games done in their time on the market? More importantly, how are other Battle Royales doing?

Since the initial craze of the last man standing game mode, we have seen several titles tick across our feeds. Vigor, The Darwin Project, Ring of Elysium, and perhaps most notably, Apex Legends. At the same time, the “I can’t escape this” craze has seemingly died down. Join Caleb, Ben, and Ryan as they discuss whether Battle Royale is here to stay, or if it is on its way out.

Sorry for the delayed upload! Recording on Thursday threw a little wrench into the works! We have BIG NEWS THIS WEEK!!! @sergeantsodium added a new member to his family!!! Private Sky is reporting for duty!!! Huge congrats to Sarge and his lovely wife on their beautiful newborn. We are all so happy for ya’ll. Needless to say, Sarge is not going to be on the show this week.

In other, less exciting news, @Bobbypease, our own Sawft-Clothez Sommelier, came down ill JUST before we were set to go live. We like our Bobby healthy, so we gave him the night off. We love you Bobby.

Bounty Board 050: Couch Co-op vs. Online Multiplayer

Happy Birthday America! While everyone is recovering from ringing ears and freedom beer hangovers, join your favorite nerds as they talk about gathering around the TV with a bunch of friends and blowing other shit up. Couch co-op, sitting next to people for you co-op gaming, was nearly a thing of the past. The Xbox One and PS4, while more powerful systems, didn’t quite continue the legacy of couch co-op games, and instead leaned into playing games online.

In this week’s Bounty Board, the crew sit down and talk about why this transition took place, how it came to be, and whether they think that couch co-op is making a return or if it is dead. To spice things up, Eric brought his couch co-op partner Matt, on the show to join us. Matt and Eric have been going to each other’s house to play games, reigniting the passion for shared gaming experiences.

The guys talk about a lot tonight. They reminisce on Halo: CE and Halo 2, and the global phenomena those games were. They discuss the rise of online gaming and how the introduction of broadband changed the space forever. They talk about Call of Duty, and the wave of PvP game types that became available as a result of dividing the community into their own homes. It is an interesting episode Folks!

Bounty Board 049: The Year So Far

Bounty Board 048: The Ethics of Leaks

With E3 in the rearview mirror and the coming fall of games, the Bounty Board crew take some time to talk about something that happens frequently in games, especially as E3 approaches: Leaks. There were several things that leaked out to the public in the days drawing up to E3. Bandai Namco had a security breach that lead to the reveal of many unannounced titles, Bleeding Edge footage with a “CONFIDENTIAL” watermark found its way onto the web, details about Star Wars came out.

@hybridglass is out of town this week, exploring the wilds of West Elizabeth (Colorado), so we are joined by friend and fan of the show @RealDirtySmurf. With all of these leaks a debate rose up within the group: Are leaks a good thing or a bad thing? Are there good leaks and bad leaks? Are all leaks the same? Do they damage the perception of the games that are detailed? Do they damage the studios making the games? The questions are abundant in this episode, and the answers aren’t all clear. Hello friends! Bounty Board is back again, this time with a guest! Richard Nava (@richarrizard) joins the crew this week to talk about the existence of mediocre games. Prompted by a conversation on Kinda Funny Games Daily, @LubWub wanted to ask the question, “Are mediocre games ok?” Do we need to hold games to a nearly unattainable standard, a standard set by iconoclasts like God of War, The Last of Us, or Marvel’s Spider-Man?

Bounty Board 044: Do Exclusives Really Define a Console?

Hey friends! The Bounty Board is back this again! This week the Crew dives into whether or not console exclusives define the console. There is no question in the world that Sony’s PS4 has dominated the console market in total sales, both in hardware and in exclusive software. But is that the thing that will be talked about as the next generation approaches? Xbox has been on a meteoric rise in the last two years, due largely to their successful introduction of the Xbox Game Pass service.

The debate is lively in this one. Are PlayStation’s exclusives the reason they won the “console war”. Is it at all possible that Xbox’s poor launch impacted the race more? What happened to Halo and Gears of War. the Xbox flagship titles have been largely quiet this generation. Bounty Board 039: First Person or Third Person?

This week on Bounty Board, the crew discusses the pros and cons of the two most pervasive perspectives in games: First Person and Third Person. So many games fall into the these two categories. From Call of Duty to Farming Simulator, the perspective we see these games through dictates how we experience games.

In this episode we ask ourselves what about these two viewpoints impacts us and how do they impact the stories and experiences they present. Does third person make for a more immersive experience or first person? When you are playing an RPG with a created character, is third or first person better? Do you play Battle Royale games in third or first person? The questions are nearly endless, but the crew comes to a few pretty solid conclusions. Bounty Board 036: Stadia, The Future of Games?

Folks…There’s been some exciting things going on in the last week. Whooo-eee! This Bounty Board has a whole lot of news for you! From trailers out the wazoo, to Disney and Fox finalizing their merger, to Battle Passes, to Anniversary content, to Suicide Squad reboots. This week has been CRAZY! All of that news culminated with Google’s unveiling of Stadia, a new platform for gaming, and it has been all we have been able to talk about.

So, join the crew this week as we dive into, not only what Stadia will mean for the industry immediately, but what the future of gaming looks like overall. Will streaming be the main way to play games in the future? How far away is that future? How long until games on disc are treated like VHS and production of physical media halts altogether? There are a lot of questions in here and we do our best to come to conclusions on as many as we can.

Games have been a round a long time. Like, before most of our show hosts were born, sorry @hybridglass (he’s old). But because they have been around so long, millions of people have been impacted by games. That group of gamers is diverse as all heck! Men, women, boys, girls, white, black, young, old, gay, straight. Gamers come in EVERY size and shape. So to celebrate that, we wanted to talk about not only what this beautiful group looks like, but how we came to call ourselves gamers as well.

This week on Bounty Board the crew celebrates being gamers. We talk about where it all started for us. We talk about how it has changed our lives. We talk about the impact it has had not only in our social circles but in our families. Bounty Board 032: The Anthem of Criticism

BioWare’s highly anticipated new IP Anthem is finally out!!! There have been a lot of things floating around the internet since the beginning of the early access started. Many spoke out about the games brokenness, incompletion, and flop. But as a group who has played and enjoyed the game, we find ourselves…confused. Why do the opinions on Anthem differ so greatly? How can a reviewer call a Live Service game that isn’t out yet incomplete?

We aren’t going to tell you that Anthem is perfect either. We understand that there are aspects that could be fixed. The loading screens ARE bad. The flow of Forge, Mission, Post-Mission, Tarsis is slow and breaks the rhythm of the game up. But is it as bad as people are saying? Check out this episode for our takes!

Bounty Board 031: The End of Big Publishers?

In the last few months, large publishers within the gaming industry have endured some woes. Blizzard lost several CFOs in a single 10 day stretch, EA’s earnings report showed a tough Q3 for them, Activision and Bungie divorced, and finally (this last week) Activision/Blizzard laid off 800 employees despite having a “record year in sales.” Those layoffs specifically, incited a lot of backlash from the other developers, journalists, and the community as a whole. More and more, developers have started seeking ways to protect themselves and their jobs from a surprisingly cutthroat industry.

This week the Bounty Board Crew ask ourselves the question: Are we seeing the fall of the Big Publishers? Are EA and Activision dying or is the industry forcing them to evolve? How can games become more profitable? Will We see more studios go indie? Join us for another great episode!

Bounty Board 030: Should Games Cost More?

There has been an almost constant debate in the game industry for the last decade: Should games cost more? With the ever-increasing cost of development, video game publishers and developers have been tirelessly searching for new ways to bring in money. Is that through adding those “dreaded” microtransactions? Is it by creating a season pass that nabs that extra bit of money off the bat from gamers? Or does it come from raising the initial price of games overall?

This week on Bounty Board the crew dives into the debate on the price of games. Should they go up? Is there something different that publishers could be doing to get more money from their audiences? How much would you pay for a game that you put 1000 hours into? What about a game that you only put 30 into?

Bounty Board 029: In Indie We Trust

For the longest time, the biggest and baddest games have fallen in the AAA category. A category of games that comes with millions of dollars for production, a huge marketing budget, dozens (if not hundreds) of developers, and the majority of the community’s attention. Then, in the late 2000s a movement began to gain momentum. As digital distribution grew, smaller studios began to release titles left and right. Titles that spoke to player’s emotions, specific genres and playstyles, and most importantly player’s wallets. Indie games were cheaper, but didn’t cut corners on quality. Almost overnight, indie games became a real contender in the video gaming world.

This week on Bounty Board the crew dives into the indie “revolution” of the late 2000s and the indie “renaissance” we are in now. There are so many good indies that we actually forget that some of the games that we play are in the indie bracket. We reminisce on some of our favorites, talk about what lead to our AAA disenfranchisement, and discuss how indie games have brought the industry back into focus as a whole. A great talk here, folks!

Bounty Board 028: Hype Train Wreck

The Hype Train gets us all eventually. We see a game that we didn’t know was coming out. The fresh trailer, the beautiful visuals, the new take on gameplay. In an instant we get drawn into an unshakeable feeling of expectation. Numerous games have exploited this expectation. Drawing fans in for pre-orders, purchases, and DLC down the road. But some games have fallen victim to its power. The first Watch Dogs, a delightfully mediocre game in the first wave of games released on next gen hardware, was panned by critics who seemed to be expecting the second coming.

This week on Bounty Board, the crew dives into whether or not the Hype Train is hurting the industry, forcing studios to come clean on their promises, or turning gamers away altogether. After all, when was the last time you let yourself get hyped for an upcoming title (Anthem and Division 2 for us, shhhh……)?

Mobile games are the games that everyone plays but nobody talks about. Nearly everyone has a cellphone, most of the people with a phone have a single game installed. In terms of market saturation, the mobile market is ripe for money making, in incredibly large sums. But there is a culture taboo around mobile games it seems. Most people don’t want to pay 3 or 4 dollars for a game, how then do developers convince them to purchase 10 or 20 dollar games?

Xbox’s monthly subscription service Game Pass launched on June 1st, 2017. When it launched people were curious what the gaming company could offer gamers with what looked like it aimed to create a Netflix for games. Over the last year an a half, Game Pass has become one of the most valuable services available to gamers. Today the service has given players Below, Ashen, Mutant Year Zero, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, Absolver, and Life is Strange 2: Part 1. And that is just in December and January.

This week on Bounty Board the crew welcomes friend of the show Bobby Pease (@Bobbypease) to talk about just how good Game Pass is. Bounty Board 020: A Moral Compass

Bounty Board 014: What Does RPG Really Mean

RPG stands for Role Playing Game, plain and simple. Only, it isn't that plain and simple. What does playing a role mean in games? Taking control of a character? Creating your own character?Do you have to have agency over the story or can the story be told to you? What about leveling and progression systems?
