• Communicate strategy clearly and consistently. When employees understand the plan, why it is essential, and how their job contributes, their role clarity can improve.

• Reward employees for achieving strategic goals. Rewarding employees in a way that contributes to their motivation shows that you understand them, their work is valued, and their contributions make a difference.

• Create a culture of continuous learning and development. Advancement helps employees to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and technologies, which can help them to be more effective in their roles.

These steps enable organizational leaders to create a sense of belonging and a successful business. Employees who feel part of something bigger than themselves are more likely to be engaged and productive. The result can be increased profits, customer satisfaction, and innovation.

PolyPay is a recognized woman-owned provider of merchant processing services based out of San Luis Obispo, California. The company opened its doors in 2013 and ever since then they have continued to grow their footprint throughout California and beyond to over 10 other states.

Now Jamie Barlett, the founder of PolyPay, is moving back to Ohio, and I talk with her about why she chose Columbus.

The merchant processing industry is rife with companies who put their monetary goals before the well being of their merchant. PolyPay will never do that.

Jamie founded PolyPay to turn those previous negative images into positive ones. Her goal is to do the right thing, always with their merchant in mind. As they continue to grow their merchant base and their capabilities, Jamie ensures that will never change.

Fangs & Fur

"Feed Like You Give A Damn"

This is the motto of Fangs & Fur owners Danielle and Anthony Santilli.

Fangs & Fur features a raw-food diet for your pet. That's what nature intended for dogs and cats, Santilli says.

Over the past century, the introduction of dry food meant most pets are being given carbohydrate-rich, low-moisture diets, Santilli said.

Most of the dry food is 45% to 75% carbs, and that’s causing all kinds of bad results, like obesity in our pets, tooth decay and a lot of gut issues.

Fangs & Fur offers fresh-frozen pet food, as well as meat-based dry food.

“We understand a raw-pet-food diet is not for everyone, so we do offer some healthier dry-food options,” Santilli says, including brands that do not use any synthetic material. “But I think you should include at least some raw, high-moisture food, even if it’s just treats, to accompany your pet’s main food.”

The store also carries raw goat’s milk and bone broth to use as meal toppers and to add moisture and nutrients to pets that eat dry food.

The store’s “raw bar” offers freeze-dried treats, including duck heads, necks and hearts; pig snouts and ears; and turkey necks.

Make Kindness Contagious

As their website states, "Make Kindness Contagious is a group of kids and parent volunteers who want to spread kindness by celebrating what makes each of us unique. We know that today’s world is filled with challenges that can diminish self-confidence in kids. Being kind is a great way to build self-esteem."

Kris Foley is the iHeartMedia Region President for its South Ohio region overseeing the Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton markets.

She is also the president of the non-profit she founded, Make Kindness Contagious.

How did this come about?

Lauren Foley, Kris' daughter, developed Alopecia Universalis when she was five. She lost all of her hair, eyebrows, and eyelashes within 4 months.

Lauren has learned to appreciate what makes her unique. Empowering her to celebrate what makes her stand out is essential.

Kris has dedicated the last few years to finding support throughout the Alopecia community and foundations dedicated to bringing awareness to this disease. But mostly, she wants to fulfill Lauren’s dream of just making people more kind.

In Lauren’s own words,

“I don’t mind if people stare, I just wish they would smile more when they did”

MKC are committed to kindness in action, and they hope you’ll join them. From kid-friendly fundraisers for organizations that help others facing hardships, to random acts of kindness, they’re here to help coach kids through it and help them rise up.

The Columbus Young Professionals (CYP) Club is a membership organization that serves as a hub for social & business networking, recreational sports, workforce development, and giving back in Columbus.

We talk with the Derek Grosso, CEO and Founder of CYP, about his history in moving to Columbus, and why he started the club.

Through Derek’s leadership, the CYP Club has offered hundreds of events, established thousands of connections, volunteered more than 100,000 service hours, donated $535,000 to local charities, and contributes $2.1 million annually in economic impact to Central Ohio.

Derek also advises young professional organizations and membership clubs around the country through The Grosso Group. He is an entrepreneur, a leadership consultant, and a public speaker.

Kip Morse - Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio

We talk with Kip Morse, President and CEO of the Better Business Bureau of Central Ohio.

The BBB is celebrating its 100 year anniversary in 2020.

The BBB has about 2 million consumers that visit the local website each year to find businesses that they can trust and find out about scams or bad business practices that might be happening in the community.

The membership years ago changed to an accreditation, which is an evaluation based on standards. The BBB has a process to evaluate businesses on standards relative to their advertising practices in general and on the internet, their licensing, how they handle complaints, whether they were previously associated with a company that had problems. All this to set standards for how to build trust with the consumers.

During the first weeks of the COVID-19 quarantine, there were collaborations with chambers, associations and some of the government agencies. The idea was that the BBB wanted to be able to drive the public quickly to the resources that they need.

Since the pandemic shutdown, now moving forward, every small business is now a startup and has to think that way. The hustle and the grind. Every small business is in that world now.

Businesses are really trying to hyper focus on where they can be most relevant and valuable, and have the biggest impact. You need to focus on, and really take a hard look at who your customer base is. Focus on them. Care for them.

The Cleary Company

We welcome George Cleary, Found and Owner and Aaron Enfinger, General Manager, of The Cleary Company.

Now at just a year at their new location and showroom, we talk about how their 26 years in business helped them weather the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Cleary Company was classified as an essential business. But they knew they had a huge responsibility in keeping their clients and field employees safe. This included lots of research on safety measures, and following the suggested state of Ohio guidelines.

The office staff worked from home, as did the designers. Collaboration took place virtually, as did client presentations of the design work for approval.

As we all were at home more, we all took notice of improvements we needed. And The Cleary Company are seeing home projects still on the rise, including outdoor projects.

What did they learn during the pandemic? With the help of Action Coach Columbus, they saw opportunities to fine tune services they were sending away. The bath2BATH division in one example.

We have Peg and Michelle on for this episode because of their insights on how they help businesses see opportunities, rather than doom and gloom, during economic downturns. The business community as a whole is experiencing this now during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How do you effectively work from home? From the business perspective, it's about accountability. Employee perspective, it's about balance of work and family within your home.

Recommendations for small businesses with employees working from home? Communicate frequently. Have small huddles daily.

Small businesses need to stick to your vision and goals. Don't compare what we are going through now to the Great Recession. Plus, look for government relief resources available now.

What is imperative right now is for business owners to focus on the future. From the "essential businesses" perspective, there is still cash flow, but is still a stressful time. You still have employees, but you have to keep them safe.

Marketing tactics during this time? Has to be changed, your message has to shift. Can your business pivot in the short term to keep employees and cash flow coming?

This is changing the way we look at our individual businesses. This is and can be an opportunity for your business.

Why continue being a chamber member? You're not alone, it is community. Plus, there may be chamber resources at your fingertips that you never realized were as valuable as they are right now.

Brush Crazy is a paint party studio offering canvas, ceramics, wood cutouts and wood signs. The Brush Crazy studio for art enthusiasts and amateurs alike. People can paint what they want, when they want, or schedule one of their artist led classes.

Lisa has always enjoyed art, and her sister Lori is a creative person as well. Lori loved taking classes at Brush Crazy, a business in Great Falls, Montana, that offers customers a chance to unleash their inner artist. Lori also enjoyed the experience on a visit.

They both grew up in Columbus, and they both came back to Columbus to be close to family and start this business together.

Schmidt's Food Truck

Michelle speaks with Andy Schmidt about this Columbus, OH icon restaurant expanding into the foot truck world.

Born just north of Frankfurt Germany, patriarch J. Fred Schmidt journeyed to America and settled in south Columbus in the early 1880’s. Opening the J. Fred Schmidt Meat Packing House in 1886 in the heart of German Village, Schmidt’s became Central Ohio’s most well known name in meats and is to this day sold in leading grocery stores around the country.

J. Fred’s grandson, George F. Schmidt, opened the company’s first restaurant in July of 1967 just around the corner from his grandfathers’ meat packing plant in German Village.

Using meat recipes from the packing days and dessert recipes from the German ladies hired to run the kitchen, Schmidt’s Sausage Haus became an instant success. Schmidt’s is still a landmark eatery in Central Ohio.

Today, the family tradition of day-to-day operations of this uniquely diverse hospitality company is carried out by the fourth generation of the Schmidt family. The Schmidt name is recognized throughout central Ohio and the nation as a leader in quality specialty restaurants, catering and unequaled banquet facilities as well as retail sales and fair and festival food services.
