How do you keep talking about pop culture when the world is on fire? When everything so terrible that it's hard to keep going? We try to give you our answers.

 When we interviewed the game's star, Lee Majdoub, and the game's narrative director, Sarah Beaulieu, our conversation explored the creative development of Mirage and the significance of this role for Majdoub. It was clear through our conversation that Majdoub was in a collaborative, supportive, and culturally respectful environment, one that unfortunately remains rare for actors of Southwest Asian or North African (SWANA) backgrounds. The dedication that Beaulieu, her narrative team, and the Ubisoft developers took to make 9th Century Baghdad as culturally meaningful and intriguing for players, for Arab and other SWANA players to feel represented in, and for players outside these cultures to learn about.

We spoke with Cezar Virtosu, the Creative Director at HexWorks, and Saul Gascon, Head of Studio and Executive Producer for Lords of the Fallen, about how they create beautiful new environments, what they needed to change from the original game, and why the parrying feels so good.

We got the chance to talk with Chelsea Howe,  Chief Product Officer of Sunblink about the complexity of adapting an iconic IP to a game, the importance of creating an inclusive and cozy game without sacrificing adventure, and ultimately, what it's like to be a part of a longstanding and joyful legacy.

We caught up with Keto Shimizu after her panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2023, “Intro to TV Writing." Here, she and other writers from the Arrowverse discussed their creative process and what studios need to do help writers succeed. We discussed her career, whether there was a chance for Legends of Tomorrow if creators had a better deal with studios, how she brings her own experiences to the characters she writes and much more.

I was lucky enough to get the chance to speak with Olivia Cheng before the launch of Warrior Season 2. In this interview, we discuss the series' relevancy during the current rise of anti-Asian hate crimes and how the series introduces audiences to Asian American history. Warrior does this in multiple ways, but referencing specifical historical moments to Ah Toy herself, a character based on a real woman of the same name. A self-proclaimed history buff, Cheng explains how she knew the history of San Francisco ahead of shooting the series, but dove even further into by learning more about Ah Toy, of which there isn't much written from her perspective.

While we talk about why the series has hit a new relevancy today, we also discuss how setting a Star Trek series on a singular station rubbed some Trekkers the wrong way. We confront the criticism and meet it with our own as we contextualize Deep Space Nine within the larger history of science fiction and Roddenberry's vision. And we do this all with the help of Alexander Brazie.

We got the chance to speak with CEO and founder Stephen Machuga about the growth his team has had since we last spoke with him three years ago. As Machuga explained, the years since have been filled with growth, most specifically in the charity's mental health arm since it was a awarded a grant by the CDC. Through that program, Stack-Up found that they could meet people where they are, using games a distraction, and allowing veterans and civilians to open up.

We got the chance to speak with one of the game's producers Alec Saáre, while at PAX South 2020 about  the title, the journey to the showroom floor, and just how the studio was able to complete the game in only 11 months. In the interview included in its entirety above, Saáre explained how Dungeon Defenders: Awakened aimed to take everything that existing fans loved about the first two games while also improving on it for a new audience.

The*gameHERs is a virtual and in-person community that connects all women gamers as well as those who identify as female, non-binary and their allies. They aim to be a space for the casual players, the hard core gamers, the techies, the streamers, the designers, the cosplayers, the developers and the programmers to advance the role, voice, image and power of all gameHERs in the gaming world. During the interview, Ouida explained how they chose their areas of focus as a community.

Over the winter holidays, I got a chance to speak with Gilbertson about this new story, the message it holds in its terrifying pages and how horror can be used to tell deep stories.

In the interview, Gilbertson explains how the series began as a thinly veiled analogy for his life with diabetes that grew to represent ta number of chronic health, psychological, and personal issues many people deal with every day. He dives into why horror was the medium of choice to tell this story and more.

With the new HBO/BBC series out, we figured it's time to grab our daemons and head into the world of Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials. In this episode with the help of Aaron from the Nerds Social Club Podcast, we dig into the lore, history and controversy around on of the UK's most beloved fantasy series. 

Ultramechatron Team Go! from CollegeHumor’s DROPOUT is an original kaiju comedy, will premiere on their subscription-based streaming service on every Thursday. A parody of the kaiju and mecha genre, the series uses influences from properties like the Power Rangers and even Pacific Rim. A team of four incompetent and incompatible mech pilots defend their city as the Ultramechatron. Each episode of this 12-episode series presents a team of four heroes who are capable of saving the world, if only they can survive each other.

The film, which debuted at the Austin Film Festival was a blast to watch and from a storytelling perspective, Hilditch gives and in depth explanation about what exactly goes into making a film where audiences will be trying to guess the ending. For him, audiences like to be detectives, they like to call out the ending and in Rattlesnake it was his job to make sure he was throwing them off at every turn. Additionally, it was important that the horror in the film came from an emotional place, from the moral struggle that Katrina is put through. While the story's supernatural elements crafted a lore and world well beyond what we could imagine. 

In this interview, we discuss how Lampulgh and Edmond designed the comedy in the script and ultimately how much was improvised. Additionally, we discussed what parodying Vice was like, whether or not they worked with them, and ultimately how ridiculous the premise of Vice videos usually are. We also discuss Lampulgh's background making short films and how this naturally progressed into a feature film with The Vice Guide to Bigfoot.

The Vice Guide to Bigfoot celebrates its World Premiere at the Austin Film Festival on Friday, October 25 at 9pm at Alamo Drafthouse Cinema Village.

The film will have a second screening on October 29 at 9:15pm at Galaxy Highland. Zach Lamplugh and Brian Edmond will be in attendance for post screening Q&As after each screening.

As I left my screening for The Mortuary Collection I knew I had found one of my top films of the festival and one of my favorite anthologies in horror. I was lucky enough to sit down with Spindell and discuss the film, practical effects work, and how storytelling is the most important part of horror. Hit play and listen as Spindell explains the film's journey from his short the The Baby Sitter Murders, shot as a proof of concept, to it's final form. Plus, learn how the crew brought the monsters in the film to life and how they balance minimal CGI with the beautiful work of practical effect giants Amalgamated Dynamics.

I was lucky enough to get to speak with Philippe at the festival and discuss why he chose the "Chestburster" scene, the role that myth plays in film, what sparked him to include some of the more emotional moments with his interviewees, and why making the film accessible to non-fans was important. 

Here, Rodriguez dives into the influences from exploitation cinema and how it allows writers and creators to "smuggle" larger themes into their work under the guise of action and comedy. We also get a chance to talk about the important step that Seis Manos and Cannon Busters serves, and how these stories would probably not be getting the spotlight without Netflix and Viz Media's collaboration. At PAX West 2019, we got the chance to sit down with David Pottinger, President of Bonus XP and lead developer on The Dark Crystal Age of Resistance Tactics and dig into why the turn-based strategy game-type was chosen for Thra, the character designs, and how they balanced the world. Announced at E3, the game offers fans the opportunity to experience the fantasy world of Thra by playing through–and going beyond–the events of the Netflix Original series.

This past week at PAX West 2019, we got the chance to sit down with Grzegorz Wilczek, the brand manager for Blair Witch from Bloober Team. Based out of Poland, the developer and publisher has made waves in the horror community with games like Layers of Fear and Observer, bringing tension, stress, and scares to a device near you with their iconic brand of psychological horror. While speaking with Wilczek, the heart of Blair Witch became clear - it's you.

If you aren't familiar, Astroneer is a sandbox exploration game which features drop-in, drop-out co-op and survival-like aspects in a beautiful and whimsical science fiction world. Taking place in the during the 25th century’s Intergalactic Age of Discovery, Astroneers explore the frontiers of outer space, risking their lives in new and unexplored environments to unearth rare discoveries and unlock the mysteries of the universe as they move from planet to planet. In Astroneer players can work together to build bases and vehicles and manipulate the terrain to create anything you can. Dig or build, a player’s creativity and ingenuity is the key to getting the most out of the game which fuels the exploration aspect.

As Tirado explained, the goal of the game is to teach players to explore, not exploit the planet. Having actively decided to not include weapons and combat in the game, the developers behind Astroneer have created a game that facilitates co-op play, ingenuity, and exploration without forcing combat like other sandbox survival games. In fact, the focus of the game is to always push the player towards science and research, distinguishing itself from other space games and solidifying themselves as one of the best community play games out right now.

With exploration and community as it's focus, Tirado explained that the removal of friction in gameplay is one of the important aspects that the developer team focuses on crafting in Astroneer isn't a job and the new additions of glow-sticks and the jetpack in the upcoming update are here to help players play, while removing some of the grind. As Tirado explained, Astroneer is a toybox for the players, not work, like others in the game-type.

As Walt, Shorten plays Chester’s oldest childhood friend and a Japanese American struggling to protect his family and friends amid the horrors of WWII and the Japanese American Internment Camps. When it comes to his character, Walt represents a personality between Chester and Ken who are polar opposites.

Shorten came into The Terror's cast after working on Man in The High Castle, as well, another Yoshida, and was looking to work on another project with the same producer. A big fan of horror, take a listen to hear about why he loves the genre and how The Terror: Infamy uses both the monstrosities of the United States and a Japanese ghost story to tell a relevant story while also shedding a light on an often-ignored part of our history.

While there were technical difficulties with the beginning of the interview, the audio picks up as Shorten describes what it's like to play Walt and how he got into character to film one of the most devastating scenes of the season so far in episode two.

Tatiana Maslany, the Emmy award-winning star of Orphan Black is on board to voice the new installment of the beloved series made possible by Serial Box's collaboration with Temple Street, a division of Boat Rocker Studios marks Serial Box’s second major commitment to creating original stories. The company recently announced it was joining forces with Marvel Entertainment to create original stories based on Black Panther, Jessica Jones, Black Widow, and Thor.

In this interview, Kennedy explains the pressure of continuing a story after five seasons of TV, the joy of creating new Clones, and the loving reception she's received from the Clone Club family. She even goes into a little bit about what we'll hear in Orphan Black: The Next Chapter, which includes diving into the characters' minds and exploring more relationships. Kennedy also explains how different teleplay writing and writing prose is, as well as how it relates to her work on the graphic novel. 

This weekend, I got the chance to talk with Hill about his work on the series, where it's going, and what has gone into adapting the series which includes characters that many people love, including Hill himself. With the first big bad of Angel being a larger critique of social media we live in, Hill explained how his storytelling and Whedon's look to hide the evil in plain sight.

After speaking with Hill, one thing is clear, he has a passion for the character, the world, is working with Melnikov to bring together a story and identity for the characters that pull create something new while honoring each character's essence from the 2000s series.

“Fantasy High,” season one, was an 80's inspired John Hughes film with wizards. There, Mulligan explained each party-member played an alter-ego of themselves.  “Bloodkeep,” Dimension 20's second season, focused on a pure evil group of characters. Now, "The Unsleeping City" retells the history of New York City and showcases the magic that Mulligan experienced as when he lived in the city. With 17-episodes, this season premieres today, July 9th. 

Mulligan serves as Dungeon Master and creator of the series, while Beardsley is a part of the adventure as Pete the Plug, in "The Unsleeping City." During the interview, Mulligan and Beardsley took a deep dive into their love of the table-top game and ultimately how fantasy works to tell human stories and how even when a scene starts with a werewolf giving a blowjob, it can end in something emotional. 

Mulligan took us down memory lane and how being ten-year-olds gave him the confidence to get into being a Dungeon Master, while Beardsley talked about their journey to falling in love with the game after coming into it with Dimensions 20's first season, "Fantasy High." Real world problems, fantastic and game shattering choices, we talk about it all. Dragonball Sunrise

What you need--  1 (1.5 fluid ounce) tequila 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice grenadine syrup 1 slice orange (garnish) 1 maraschino cherry (garnish)

How to Make it -- Stir or shake together tequila and orange juice. Fill a chilled 12-ounce glass with ice cubes; pour in orange juice mixture. Slowly pour in the grenadine, and allow it to settle to the bottom of the glass (be patient). Garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry.
