Asa Carter was a violent racist who created a militant faction of the Ku Klux Klan and sent thugs to attack a Nat King Cole concert. Later, he moved to Texas, changed his name, and softened his image if not his actual beliefs. He lied about Cherokee ancestry and fabricated most of the details in <em>The Education of Little Tree</em>.
