His miracles—healing the leper, calming the storm, casting out demons, and raising the dead—are not just acts of compassion but revelations of His identity as the Messiah. The disciples’ question, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!” (Matt 8:27), highlights the mystery of who Jesus truly is. These miracles are glimpses of the kingdom breaking into the world, revealing Jesus as the King who restores all things.

Scholars debate whether this is a collection of sermons given in a summary form or if this is the totality of the sermon. Nevertheless, Matthew’s recording of it seeks to communicate a very clear message.
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished” (Matt 5:17-18).
If Matthew 1-4 is the ‘hope’ of the Kingdom of God, chapters 5-7 are the ‘how’ of the Kingdom of God. In it we come face to face with Jesus’ clearest teaching on Kingdom ethics; what it looks like to live as a disciple of Jesus, in God’s Kingdom under God’s power and presence.

Before we get into the details of Jesus' ministry and teaching Matthew wants us to know who Jesus is. We are to encounter Jesus' words, miracles and compassion through the lens of his identity. He is the fully human, fully divine, Immanuel - God with us. He is the beloved Son of God who will both embody what it looks like to live in the kingdom, but also through his life, death and resurrection make a way for us to enter the kingdom.
Jesus ministry opens with the call to repent for the kingdom of God is at hand, after generations of waiting for the promised seed of Abraham, the promised descendant of David, now finally in Jesus the kingdom has come - hope is born.

“For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God you may receive what is promised”.
Hebrews 10:36
Hebrews was penned for weary urban Christians. The letter was written to encourage Jewish Christians (hence the title
Hebrews) enduring a time of trial. Believers who were navigating pluralistic societies similar to our own. Christians who lived in cities where Jesus and Christianity were not respected or understood. The author wrote to persecuted Christians who felt discouraged and isolated, Jewish Christians who were tempted to either drift away towards worldliness or fall back towards Judaism. In response to opposition and persecution, the author of Hebrews encourages us to fix our eyes on Jesus and the unshakeable kingdom he’s ushering in. The author doesn’t end this book by giving us a cosy blanket for us to wrap ourselves up in
and hide from the world. No, it ends with a challenge to have faith that endures to have a faith like the heroes of the faith.

“He entered once for all into the holy places, not by means of the blood of goats and calves but by means of his own blood, thus securing an eternal redemption” - Hebrews 9:12
Jesus is the great high priest, who is like us and yet did not sin. He is the final high priest who entered the most holy place to offer the ultimate sacrifice, himself - for us. He is the mediator of the new covenant that was inaugurated by his blood, so we could be forgiven of our sins. And yet he didn’t just die, he rose again and is coming back to “save those who are eagerly waiting on him”. So that now we can draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, and have a relationship with the King of righteousness & peace.</itunes:summary>

The Most Holy Place
<itunes:title>The Most Holy Place</itunes:title>
Jesus entered the heavenly sanctuary, offering His own blood as a sacrifice to secure eternal redemption for us, to cleanse us of sin and to gift us the presence of God, the Holy Spirit.
So that now we can draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, and have a relationship with the King of righteousness & peace.
