You try your best to ignore what is being said, but the words just keep coming in through your ears no matter how much you try to block them out.

It's at that moment that you feel that you are alone in a sea of Republicanism. Alone in a maddening, MAGA-hat wearing throng where everyone drinks the Fox News kool-aid.

You are not alone! There are over 52,000 Democrats in Collier County and this is your podcast.

The Collier Democratic Roundup is the official podcast of the Collier County Democratic Party. On each episode we will discuss some of the news, what is going on in the local and state party, and how you can get involved and take action to affect change in your community.

We will bring on expert guests to talk about politics, the economy, elections, voting and more. You will hear from local officials and candidates to keep informed of what is going on in Collier County.

It's nearly impossible to hear about progressive news in our local community so we decided to bypass the local media and give it straight to you. We have a robust website and social media presence that gives you news and opinion pieces about local news stories.

We're Back at It!</itunes:title>

Hello and welcome to the Collier Democratic Round-Up, the

official podcast of the Collier County Democratic Party. I am your host, Jeff

Spencer. We’re back! It’s been two years since we last recorded a podcast and a

lot has happened in the time since. Let’s do a bit of a recap and get everyone

up to speed.

First, we have new leadership here in Collier County. Every

two years, we have an election to choose a new slate of officers. Annisa Karim

and myself, as Chair and Vice-Chair, chose to step down. There are a lot of

reasons for this, but the main being that we both felt that the party needed

fresh energy and fresh perspectives to grow as it needs to grow. We have both

put a lot of effort over the last 6 years to build a strong foundation for the

party to build.

We achieved a lot. We raised more money in our 6 years than

in the previous 12 combined. We upgraded our website, social media, and

communication presence to reach more Democrats.

We invested in improved financial and volunteer management systems to

allow us to maximize our potential. We fielded full slates of candidates for

all offices in 2018 and 2020 and had the highest democratic turnout in 2020 of

any county in the entire state.

There were big accomplishments, but they were not enough.

The party needed some fresh perspectives and new ideas to take the next step

toward a blue Collier County. And I am very excited about our new slate of

officers and the direction they are taking the party.

Our new Chair is Jane Schletweig. Jane worked with Annis and

I as State Committee Woman where she represented Collier County at the State

Party. Jane is also the Region 12 Chair of the Democratic Women’s Club of

Florida.

Our new Vice-Chair is Adam Molny. Adam has been our Data

Coordinator for the last four years and he has been integral to each of our

successes.

Anne Daley was re-elected as Treasurer for a second term and

Judy Freiberg was re-elected as Secretary for her second term.

This new leadership is incredibly qualified and has already

hit the ground running. New members and new volunteers have already started to

participate. Melody Hardee has taken over the Communications Committee and has a

great plan to reach out to more Democrats and non-democrats alike. At

February’s meeting, it was standing room only with new volunteers signing up to

help on many new committees.

The next two years are very important. We have a Governor

who is emboldened and continues to go on the attack. We have the School Board

and County Commission that has lurched even further right parroting conspiracy

theory, discounting science, and ignoring the needs of the most vulnerable

constituents. Rick Scott is up for re-election and needs to be defeated.

Jane and the rest of the leadership have a plan to engage

new voters. You can find out more about their plans and how you can help by

going to www.collierdems.org. We’ll be

right back after a short break.

Hello and welcome to the Collier Democratic Round-Up, the

official podcast of the Collier County Democratic Party. Sara has been a huge asset to the local party over the last 5 years. She has run twice for office and made huge strides in a very difficult district, growing the party with all of her efforts both as a candidate and as our State Committeewoman. She will remain on as a Precinct committee person, but she is taking a much deserved break. A huge thank you to Sara for all of her efforts.

With Sara's resignation, we have to replace her position and we are excited to announce that Jane Schletweig has agreed to become our new State Committeewoman. Jane is a precinct committeewoman out of Marco, she is Vice-President of the Democratic Women's Club of Marco, and she is the Region 7 Chair for the Democratic Women's Club of Florida. Jane has worked closely with the leadership of the Collier Democratic Party over the last 4 years and we are excited for her to join our leadership team.

The Democratic County Chairs Association met for the first time this past month and we had State Party Chair Manny Diaz and Executive Director Marcus Dixon on to update us on all the Florida Democratic Party efforts. They are doing a great job of getting the party back moving in the right direction. They have proposed a annual budget of 12 million dollars, focusing heavily on voter registration and communication. They have budget money to combat what will prove to be contentious redistricting process. They have had to deal with a lot of unforseen issues that have arisen after their election, but they have righted the ship and are pushing forward.

Here are the upcoming meetings to put on your schedule.

Thursday May 6th @ 6:30 is the Monthly DEC meeting. This is the business meeting of the party, it is open to the public.

Tuesday May 11th @7:00 is the monthly meeting of the Democratic Womens Club of Marco. I will speaking at this meeting along with our outgoing State Committeewoman Sara McFadden. We will be discussing the legislative session and the voting trends as seen around Collier County.

Monday May 17th @ 6:30 is the monthly meeting of the Collier Democratic Club.

Please remember to volunteer and donate. We are an all volunteer organization and we rely on your generosity to maintain the website, produce this podcast, and promote the agenda of the Democratic party through out Collier and Southwest Florida, so please donate a little time or money to our efforts. It is greatly appreciated.

Today we discuss Biden's first 100 days in office and give him a grade (spoiler alert, he did pretty well), we talk about the census and what redistricting means for Democrats, and we look at the efforts of local Anti-abortion advocates and their push to make Naples a sanctuary city for the unborn. Also look out for the Collier County Democratic Party Voter’s guide which was mailed to all 55,000 Democrats and left-leaning NPA’s. That should be in your mailboxes now as well. If you have not received those, please check out our website where you can find out all of the candidates and our recommendations on the amendments.

We are in full GOTV mode for the next 39 days of this election. We are calling voters who have requested Vote-By-Mail ballots and telling them to send them in immediately. We are dropping literature at doors to encourage people to vote. We are sending post cards, we’ve got radio ads running, we’re texting, waving signs…we have something for you to do and you need to do it. Please sign up by going to our website www.collierdems.org and click on volunteer.

Lastly, we want to take a moment to remember RBG, Ruth Bader Ginsberg. We will talk about this more on the next episode of the podcast, but we just want to say that she dedicated her life to the principle of equal rights for all Americans under the law regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, etc. She fought for these principles and we will continue the fight. Her last words were that her most fervent wish was for her replacement to be made after a new president is installed. She deserved better than this. RIP RBG.

https://collier-democratic-roun.captivate.fm

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/1a6383b0-435c-4236-9a92-43dd5b9424db/COLLIER-DEMS-LOGO-D-ON-TOP-HR.jpg"/>
Collier County Democratic Party

<itunes:duration>01:07:41</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>25</itunes:episode><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><podcast:episode>25</podcast:episode><podcast:season>1</podcast:season><itunes:author>Collier County Democratic Party</itunes:author>

Episode 24 - Deep Throat this time is Donald Trump
<itunes:title>Episode 24 - Deep Throat this time is Donald Trump</itunes:title>

Amber, Linda, and Jeff try to sift through the whirlwind of news stories including the Bob Woodward tapes, the Atlantic Article reporting Trump calling soldiers losers and suckers, the Justice Department stepping in to defend Trump with Tax Payer money, another whistle blower who claims the Trump Administration is downplaying the threat from Russia and white supremacists, and more.

Amber, Linda, and Jeff try to sift through the whirlwind of news stories including the Bob Woodward tapes, the Atlantic Article reporting Trump calling soldiers losers and suckers, the Justice Department stepping in to defend Trump with Tax Payer money, another whistle blower who claims the Trump Administration is downplaying the threat from Russia and white supremacists, and more.

https://collier-democratic-roun.captivate.fm

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/1a6383b0-435c-4236-9a92-43dd5b9424db/COLLIER-DEMS-LOGO-D-ON-TOP-HR.jpg"/>
Collier County Democratic Party

<itunes:duration>37:32</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>24</itunes:episode><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><podcast:episode>24</podcast:episode><podcast:season>1</podcast:season><itunes:author>Collier County Democratic Party</itunes:author>

Episode 23 - RNC Convention Recap...Thank god that's over.
<itunes:title>Episode 23 - RNC Convention Recap...Thank god that's over.</itunes:title>

We dive into the deep red waters of the Republican National Convention and discuss what worked, what didn't and where we go from here.

We dive into the deep red waters of the Republican National Convention and discuss what worked, what didn't and where we go from here.

https://collier-democratic-roun.captivate.fm

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/1a6383b0-435c-4236-9a92-43dd5b9424db/COLLIER-DEMS-LOGO-D-ON-TOP-HR.jpg"/>
Collier County Democratic Party

<itunes:duration>49:59</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><itunes:episode>23</itunes:episode><itunes:season>1</itunes:season><podcast:episode>23</podcast:episode><podcast:season>1</podcast:season><itunes:author>Collier County Democratic Party</itunes:author>

Episode 22 - Democratic National Convention Day 4 Recap
<itunes:title>Episode 22 - Democratic National Convention Day 4 Recap</itunes:title>

Amber, Linda and I get together for night 4 of the Democratic National Convention and we revel in the power of Joe Biden's speech. This District is a very important district this election cycle as there are more registered Democrats than Republicans. The incumbent Ana Maria Rodriguez is stepping down and running for a Florida State Senate seat. It’s an open seat and we need to flip it. And we have two awesome candidates who will do just that.

As always, we have our panel discussion with Amber and Linda. This episode we look at the local protests over Oakes Farms and the controversial comments made by the owner of Oakes Farms, Alfie Oakes. We dig into the explosion of coronavirus cases here in Florida and the decisions by the Governor to continue re-opening without precautions. Finally we talk about voting rights and the effects, both negative and positive, that Republican efforts to restrict voting across the country is likely to have come November.

But, first here is some local party info.

We are very excited to announce that all of our local candidates qualified and will be on the ballot this November. Obviously, we have two races with primaries so those will be on the ballot this august with the winner moving on to the general election.

We have candidates in all of the Florida legislature seats running this election cycle and Democrats across the state are competing in every single legislative seat except one. We are contesting every seat to make sure that voters hear progressive values, as well as all of the Democratic candidates who are contesting Republican incumbents will hold those incumbents accountable for their record. Voters must hear about the decisions made by Republican incumbents and the best way to highlight decisions that do not help constituents, is by directly confronting them in an election. So congratulations to all of our candidates here in Collier County and all of the Democratic candidates across the state.

In an effort to support our candidates, we will be putting on candidate spotlights for our candidates who do not have primary challenges and a candidate forum for FL House 105, which has a primary.
