Originally portrayed by a white male actor, Marlin Hurt, Beulah Brown first appeared in 1939 when Hurt introduced and played the character on the Hometown Incorporated radio series and in 1940 on NBC radio's Show Boat series. In 1943, Beulah moved over to That's Life and then became a supporting character on the popular Fibber McGee and Molly radio series in March 1944.

On July 2, 1945, Beulah was spun off into her own radio show on CBS, The Marlin Hurt and Beulah Show, sponsored by Tums. Hurt was still in the role of Beulah, and also played the voice of Beulah's boyfriend, Bill Jackson. Beulah was employed as a housekeeper and cook for the Henderson family: father Harry, mother Alice and son Donnie. Rounding out the cast was Oriole Winston, the housekeeper for the family next door to the Hendersons.

After Hurt died of a heart attack in 1946, he was replaced by another white actor, Bob Corley, and the series was retitled The Beulah Show, which ran on ABC as a sustaining program from February 24 to August 20, 1947.

When African-American actress Hattie McDaniel took over the role on November 24, 1947, with the program returning to CBS. She earned $1,000 a week for the first season, doubled the ratings of the original series and pleased the NAACP which was elated to see a historic first: a black woman as the star of a network radio program.

McDaniel continued in the role until she became ill in 1952 and was replaced by Lillian Randolph, who was in turn replaced for the 1953–54 radio season by her sister, Amanda Randolph.

It’s Henry’s mother’s birthday coming up and he wants to buy her a really good present but only has $2. But he has a plan for making it in to more money he is going to raise rabbits but his Father doesn’t think it is a good idea. Then when the plumber arrives to repair a pipe under the sink he plants an idea in Henry’s head for raising pigeons.

31:13 ... Carrier Pigeons -- The Aldrich's have just hired a maid named Martha. Henry's raising rabbitts in the cellar. Henry and his pal Tommy are now raising carrier pigeons. In the town of Centerville most of the residents are ready for March to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb. But in the Aldrich family home on Elm Street these traditional animals have been relegated to the background for Henry Aldrich has real rabbits hopping around the basement and live pigeons flapping about the attic.

01:43 ... Exaggeration Troubles -- Ozzie tries to stop Harriet from exaggerating. The Four King Sisters sing, "I Don't Care Who Knows It." + Ozzie is concerned by the level of Harriet’s capacity to exaggerate and decides to over exaggerate everything himself to show her how annoying it is. However he may have gone too far when he exaggerates the price of all their furniture in front of a man who he believes to be the antique guy but who is actually from the revenue department and has come to value the contents of their home in order to make a tax assessment!

32:48 ... The Princess Gift -- It’s a beautiful fall morning both outside and inside the Nelson home at 1847 Rogers Road. David and Ricky are outside playing but Ozzie and Harriet are at the breakfast table looking over the morning mail most of which is for David. However one of the letters is from the Arabian Officer from Bazakastan who they met when he visited Los Angeles a couple of months ago offering them a gift for their kind hospitality. But oh dear what are Ozzie and Harriet going to do with the camel he delivers to them!

Marjorie is set on selling an iron deer to raise money, and her conversation with the junk man leads to an interesting exchange of words. At the same time, Birdie has designs on the deer, as does Leroy and Gildersleeve. Who will win the race to sell it for scrap money?

Mr Lewellyn, the man who sounds like Elmer Fudd, is still in town, and chats with Gildersleeve about his predicament. Can the man help Gildersleeve with some of his own bookkeepping woes? Will the multiple claims on the iron deer be cleared up? Who is getting the best deal for the disappearing deer?

The cast does a football skit called, "Hold That Line." Mary is out sick and does not appear. "The Blue Fairy Appears To Help Out," or "One Moment Please." The Jack Benny Program was first broadcast on the Blue Network on 2nd May 1932. With his capable cast of supporting players Benny made his show into one of great radio comedy shows. What was so special about this golden-age classic is Benny's ability to come across as a likeable guy despite being vain, argumentative, and a skinflint. People related to Benny and his willingness to often give the best comedy lines in the show to his supporting cast made him popular with listeners, guests and colleagues. The series was produced by Bob Adams, and directed by Robert L. Redd and Dick Mack. Written by Ed Simmons and Norman Lear, although they were not hired until late 1950.

1_ Squire Skimp tries to give back the oil well to Lum and Abner...and with good reason! Lum & Abner and Grandpa Spears had sold Pine Ridge's oil company's holdings to the South West Oil Company for $3000 in cash, and a royalty of 10 cents per barrel.

2_ The oil company agreement with Squire Skimp has disappeared! Pine Ridge has received a very great shock. It was discovered that the oil well that Lum, Abner and Grandpa Spears brought in and sold to Squire Skimp, wasn't an oil well after all.

This week we welcome a new program to the podcast, Vic and Sade, with two early episodes, Decoration Day Parade and Sades Trip to Dwight. These episodes aired May 28, 1937 and June 6, 1937.

Vic and Sade was broadcast from 1932 to 1946 originally on the NC Blue Network before eventually being broadcast on all major radio networks (NBC, NBC Blue, Mutual Broadcasting, and CBS). Most episodes were only 15 minutes long (1932-1945). The main characters were accountant Victor Rodney Gook, Sade his wife, and their adopted son Rush (Art Van Harvey, Bernardine Flynn, Bill Idelson). The three lived in "the little house halfway up in the next block."

It’s about a wife who buys a house without telling her husband, Benny, on the pretense that George Washington once slept in the house… to only find out he did not. Other characters enter the story, the house is actually falling apart and comedy follows.

Welcome to Comedy x Funny Ha Ha. The first post is from Fibber McGee and Molly (FMM), titled Traffic Ticket, this episode aired Nov. 14, 1939.

FMM were a married couple that got their start in Vaudeville before becoming huge radio stars. They were on radio then television from 1935 to 1959.
