His baseline background and training experience was with Toyota-trained teachers in the USA and Japan. Charlie started Business Improvement Group (BIG) in 1997, and along with his son and other partners, spent the last 28 years implementing successful Lean Implementations and World Class Kaizen events for small to fortune 100 companies across the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Europe and Asia. Charlie is following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Charles W. As our Executive Vice President of Supply Chain & Production, Gary specializes in creating cultures of continuous improvement through manufacturing and leadership excellence. He leads our manufacturing, buying, engineering, refining, and logistics teams. Gary has been at O.C. Tanner for over 35 years and has helped transform the company’s manufacturing operations from “batch” to lean while pioneering team-based procedures that allow each unit to take full ownership of their results. His greatest joy on the job comes from interacting with and inspiring people—empowering them to do their best work.

Gary enjoys traveling across the globe to assist organizations in generating newfound outcomes for their people and their machines. Michael’s work in academia at Columbia University spans disciplines. Korndorffer graduated cum laude from Tulane University with an undergraduate degree in biomedical engineering. He received his medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship and residency at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, North Carolina, where he received the award for best resident teacher.

With a strong interest in teaching, Korndorffer left a successful private practice after eight years and joined the faculty at Tulane University School of Medicine He became an associate professor of surgery in 2005 and professor in 2010. He served in numerous leadership roles at Tulane, including vice chair of the surgery department from 2012 to 2017, program director for the surgical residency from 2006 to 2017, assistant dean for graduate medical education and founding medical director for the Tulane Center for Advance Medical Simulation. Continuing his passion for education, Korndorffer completed his Master of Health Professions Education at the University of Illinois Chicago while working full time at Tulane.

Korndorffer joined Stanford School of Medicine’s Department of Surgery as the inaugural vice chair for education in 2017. He assumed additional leadership responsibilities within the department, including director of the Goodman Surgical Simulation Center and the surgical education fellowship program.

He was one of the early adopters of the use of simulation for surgical training and has been actively involved in surgical education research since 2003. Some of the early work using proficiency-based training instead of time base training for skill acquisition. This has now become the norm. He is now actively involved investigating the role simulation education has in patient quality and healthcare system safety.

Korndorffer has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals as well as 10 book chapters, and he has held over 150 presentations at national and international meetings.

Julie retired as the Executive Director for the Northwest High Performance Enterprise Consortium (NWHPEC) in January 2018 after leading the organization for fifteen years. As the Executive Director, Julie was responsible for promoting the vision, mission, and purpose of the consortium within the Portland and Vancouver business area. 

Prior to joining NWHPEC in 2004, Julie worked at the The Boeing Company for 14 years as Flight Line Expeditor, Shortage Controller, Supply Chain Analyst, and Manufacturing Process Analyst. She developed her skills as a Continuous Improvement practitioner while working as a Manufacturing Process Analyst where she became a Certified Accelerated Improvement Workshop leader and supported several Shingijutsu led Kaizen events.

In 1994, Mark returned to the United States and transitioned to the Toyota Supplier Support Center (TSSC), a non-profit organization Toyota in North America established dedicated to the practical application of the Toyota Production System (TPS) across various sectors. While at TSSC, he worked to extend TPS beyond manufacturing into healthcare and non-profits, which remains a key focus of TSSC's mission.

Mark joined Toyota's Corporate Strategy group in North America in 2001, serving as Assistant General Manager. He managed Toyota’s North American hoshin kanri process during a period of significant growth that saw sales and production nearly double over the next decade. Hoshin kanri was essential for aligning the organization during this transformative time.

In 2011, Mark transitioned to the Lean Enterprise Institute (LEI) and has held several positions, including Chief Operating Officer and, since 2018, Senior Coach and Chief Engineer, Strategy. former Director of Education, Jacob co-created the Shingo Model and developed the foundational learning

courses taught at the Shingo Institute. He has trained Shingo examiners and thousands of individuals

worldwide on how to assess and establish lean mindsets and method. In 2006, Jacob pioneered the concept ‘key behavior indicators’ (KBIs). Today many world-wide organizations have now adopted this term and concept to expand their desired outcomes with key performance indicators

(KPIs). By combining KPI and KBI, Jacob’s consulting firm has led the development and application of behavior-

based strategy deployment; building systems to drive the right behavior; and developing internal behavioral

assessments. The United State Airforce invited Jacob to join a team of global subject matter experts to create their lean

leadership development program (AFSO21) in 2006. He was commissioned to lead the leadership

development for United States Airforce Europe – working with leaders throughout 93 countries. His work

challenged leaders’ mindsets around lean tools and how to lead by integrating guiding principles.

After spending over a decade with the Shingo Institute he joined Munson Healthcare, northern Michigan’s

largest healthcare system as their Chief Transformation Officer. At Munson Healthcare, Jacob spent seven

years creating and deploying an organizational lean operating system and alignment framework anchored to

guiding principles that are now integrated into nine hospitals and over 150 clinics. Currently Jacob supports the Shingo Institute as a Faculty Fellow by continuing his work in creating learning frameworks to help organizations effectively integrate the Shingo Model. He was recognized and awarded as a

In the late eighties, he was a visiting scholar in MIT’s International Motor Vehicle Research Program (IMVP), which introduced the term “lean” to describe Toyota’s revolutionary management system. Kaitlyn Wolken joined The University of Kansas Health System in 2015 as a Respiratory Therapist, where she specialized in delivering high-quality care to neonatal and pediatric patients. He began his career as a labour & litigation lawyer with one of Canada’s elite international law firms.

He was recruited into consulting in 1994 and soon after was hired by Canada’s largest independent strategy consultancy (since acquired by KPMG). There he worked with the executive teams of industry-leading companies in North America and Europe, including Ubisoft, Sanofi, as well as Bureau Veritas, the no. 2 player in the global testing and inspection industry (currently 80 000 employees in 140 countries) who hired him to set up their corporate university and develop their flagship strategic alignment program targeting the organization’s top 300 leaders.

He was later asked to join Bureau Veritas full-time as a senior executive. Based in Europe and reporting to a member of the group’s Executive Committee, he led a team that supported country and regional leadership teams in the USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific, notably with restructuring and strategic alignment, as well as with their post-merger integration of efforts (Note: during his time at Bureau Veritas, the company grew from 18 000 to 60 000 employees). 

In 2010, he returned to North America and his expertise with executive teams led Lafarge, now Holcim, the leading cement company in the world ($30 billion in revenues, 72 000 employees) to hire him as a special advisor to its executive teams in Europe, Asia and North America to address restructuring and alignment issues. Since that time, he has also been hired for strategic alignment support by many other industry-leading companies in North America and Europe including Marriott (global no. 1 in hospitality) and Randstad (global no.1 in recruitment).

In addition to his consulting work, Jacques has taught at numerous business schools in North America and Europe since 2012. Prior to CQPO, Mike was a corporate leader for 13 years at Toyota Motor Manufacturing’s Georgetown, Kentucky, plant both in Human Resources and Manufacturing. As Assistant General Manager in Human Resources, his responsibilities included personnel, safety, HR development, employee relations, benefits, training, and manufacturing/human resource teams for a plant of 8000 team members. His major initiative was development of the enhanced relationship between Human Resource and Manufacturing. Mike’s operational responsibilities in manufacturing started in 1987 as a front line supervisor in vehicle assembly. This included all aspects of safety, quality, productivity, cost and morale for operations. With experience as Assembly Plant Manager and eventually Assistant General Manager, his responsibilities increased to include both assembly plants including operations, maintenance, and engineering.

A dermatologist and medical informatics expert, Dr. Papier has a particular interest in designing clinical decision support systems based on visually rich knowledge areas to reduce diagnostic error at the point of care. In line with this goal, he is focused on transforming medical education to include training in cognitive error and the use of information technology. Dr. Papier also focuses on consumer health by developing tools to educate and empower patients.

During his time teaching at the Weapons School, Cujo served as the U.S. Air Force’s Subject Matter Expert on the practice of team accountability. His published work from that time is still in use throughout the Air Force today. Specifically, Cujo authored “The Vocabulary of the Debrief” and helped mold the Methodology of the Debrief, defining the language and accountability practices that the Air Force uses to the present day.

A 1995 distinguished military graduate of the Air Force Academy and a 2013 distinguished graduate of the National War College, Cujo retired from the Air Force in December 2015, achieving the rank of full Colonel. But because of a battle with colorectal cancer, Cujo and his family decided to retire from the Air Force early. Dr. Sydlowski completed her clinical doctorate at the University of Louisville, her externship at Mayo Clinic Arizona, and her PhD at Gallaudet University. Dr. Sydlowski has been very active in professional organizations, serving on the American Academy of Audiology Board of Directors as a member-at-large (2015-2018) and currently as Immediate Past President. She is also principal investigator of a study focused on integration of tablet-based hearing screeners in primary care and geriatric medicine practices. One of Mike’s primary roles with SISU is the development of leaders at each level of the organization.  In this role, Mike has trained and personally coached thousands of leaders through his live workshops, online development courses, executive coaching, and Coaching Camps.

Mike’s experience with the concepts of omotenashi, kaizen and ikigai come from his extensive travels to Japan.  Beginning with a business trip in 2004, Mike has spent countless hours learning about Japanese culture and benchmarking world-class kaizen cultures.  Beginning in 2011, Mike opened up these trips to other business leaders, and in 2013, he organized the first Japan Study Tour for the Shingo Institute.

efforts. He sits on the clinical research advisory board of the National

Alopecia Areata Foundation and is a founder and co-director of the Skin

Innovation and Interventional Research Group (SIIRG) which conducts clinical

and translational research on skin disease. He graduated magna cum laude from

Harvard University and worked in investment banking; mergers and acquisitions

at JP Morgan before going on to earn a combined medical and business degree at

Tufts University. During medical school, he was a member of the Alpha Omega

Alpha honor society. Dr. Ko then performed his residency at the Harvard

Alpa is the Vice

President and Chief Patient Experience Officer at Stanford Health Care. She is

responsible for developing and driving core patient and family centered

programs, services and patient satisfaction reporting/analytics to support the

Dr. Longhurst completed his

residency at Stanford University and earned his medical degree and MS in

medical informatics from UC Davis. He holds a BS in molecular biology from

Revelle College at UC San Diego. He is a board-certified pediatrician and

serves as Professor Emeritus in Internal Medicine and Learning Health Sciences

Systems and Design (Engineering) at the University of Michigan. Dr. Billi's

management and research interests are in health services delivery, especially

the use of lean thinking to improve quality and efficiency, the use of

community collaboratives to improve quality and population health, clinical

practice transformation, the creation and use of evidence-based guidelines, and

conflict of interest management. 

For 18 years Dr. Billi

led the Michigan Quality System, the University of Michigan Health System’s

(UMHS) business strategy to transform clinical operations through deployment of

scientific problem solving and coaching at all levels.  MQS built on

classic continuous quality improvement, incorporating holistic principles of

lean thinking such as supporting workers and managers to take initiative to fix

root causes of problems daily, supported by daily management systems, value

stream management, and strategy deployment.  The goal of MQS was to

improve safety, quality, timeliness, financial stewardship, and people engagement

in healthcare delivery through problem solving by every worker and leader,

every day.

Dr Billi has helped hundreds of teams of physicians, other clinicians,

administrative leaders, and trainees learn practical problem solving through

hands-on A3 workshops using their real work problems. Dr Billi led workshops

on lean thinking within and outside UM, including a joint program with the UM

College of Engineering with a nationwide draw.

Dr. Billi has

contributed to many statewide initiatives to improve quality and efficiency of

care, especially the use of community collaboration to support

improvement.  UMHS serves as the coordinating center for over 20 statewide

Collaborative Quality Initiatives (www.bcbsm.com/providers/value-partnerships/collaborative-quality-initiatives.html) funded by Blue

Cross Blue Shield of Michigan; for almost  20 years Dr. Billi served as

Medical Director for the University’s coordinating role. For 20 years he

co-chaired the Michigan Quality Improvement Consortium (www.mqic.org/), which develops

common, one-page practice guidelines endorsed by the Michigan Department of

Health and health plans in Michigan. He serves on steering committee for the

Washtenaw Health Initiative (washtenawhealthinitiative.org/), a local

collaboration for improving care and health, health equity, and social

determinants. For over a decade Dr Billi served as the senior faculty advisor

for the Michigan Data Collaborative (michigandatacollaborative.org), a multi-payer

claims/clinical data repository and analytic service serving statewide

population health programs including PGIP, CPC Plus and the State Innovation

Model. He serves on the St Joseph Health System Regional Integrated Network

(Trinity CIN) Board.  From 2018-2020 he served as Chair of the Board of

the Corner Health Center, an adolescent community health center in Ypsilanti.

Dr. Billi helped found

and for 10 years co-chaired the board of the Center for Healthcare Research and

Transformation (CHRT – www.chrt.org). Originally formed as

a joint venture between UMHS and BCBSM, now an influential independent

non-profit, CHRT’s goals are to improve the quality and cost of healthcare

delivery through policy analysis and education essential to creating effective

health policy at the state and national level.

Since 2012

Dr Billi has served as a founding member of the AMA’s Professional Satisfaction

and Practice Sustainability Task Force, dedicated to ensuring clinical

practitioners have the skills and knowledge to lead their local teams to

improve their practice and prevent burnout. He previously chaired the Michigan

State Medical Society's (MSMS) Committee on Health Care Quality, Efficiency,

and Economics. He served 12 years on the MSMS Board. He serves on the Blue

Cross of Michigan Physician Relationship Advisory Committee.

For over

35 years, Dr. Billi has contributed to American Heart Association emergency

cardiac care committees and the International Liaison Committee on

Resuscitation (ILCOR – www.ilcor.org/). An international scientific

collaboration, ILCOR develops the evidence-based consensus on resuscitation

science used worldwide to develop practice guidelines and educational programs

to improve outcomes in cardiac resuscitation. Dr. Billi developed and leads

conflict of interest (COI) management activities for ILCOR’s worldwide

consensus on science process. He chairs ILCOR’s COI committee.

management roles include 15 years as Associate VP for Medical Affairs and 26

Associate Chief Medical Officer of Acute Care at the University of

Dr. Zaas was the President of Duke Raleigh Hospital from 2014-2020. He previously served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Duke Faculty Practice, the Private Diagnostic Clinic (PDC). He also served as the Vice-Chair for Clinical Practice in the Department of Medicine at Duke University. Dr. Zaas also formerly served as medical director for Lung Transplantation at Duke. Dr. Summers joined Wake Forest Baptist Health in July of 2010 as a Hospitalist in the Section of General Medicine. By 2012, he was named the first Chief in the Section on Hospital Medicine. In 2014, he was appointed Associate Chief Medical Officer, and in 2018 was promoted to Chief Medical Officer at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center. As CMO, he holds responsibilities including leadership over the Medical Staff, Advanced Practice Providers, Care Coordination, and the Clinical Documentation Excellence Team.

Dr. Summers career has been defined by the ability to implement new processes quickly and efficiently to improve patient care. He has succeeded in three major academic medical centers making change (East Carolina Health, Mayo Clinic, Atrium Health Wake Forest).

He brings disciplined leadership to bear on complex issues where clinical expertise, strategic thinking, and organizational savvy are essential. As a leader, he uses experience and insight to provide structure, order, and clarity to help make rapid and lasting progress on critical issues.

His work at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist Health has changed the organization over the last twelve years. Among the many projects, he has implemented at Wake Forest include the following: The Section of Hospital Medicine, The Patient Flow Operations Center, The Inpatient Diabetes Management Service, The Orthopedic/Hospitalist Co-management Service, Bed Geography for all Inpatient services, the Discharge Lounge, the Discharge holding unit, a new ED triage process to maximize throughput, and a transfer process between network hospitals to maximize bed space.

One of Dr. Summers areas of interest is patient flow. His efforts in this area, along with his leadership in Care Coordination and the Physician Advisor Program, have led to one of the lower LOS indexes in the country for academic medical centers.

Dr. Summers earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Virginia and his Medical Degree at the University of Alabama School of Medicine. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Active in professional organizations, Dr. Summers currently serves on the AAMC CMOG Steering Committee. He was also named by Becker’s Hospital Review in 2022 as one of the 89 Chief Medical Officers of Hospitals and Health Systems to know.

In 2002, Zingerman's Mail Order and Zingermans.com merged and Tom took on the role of Chief Financial Officer of the resulting business (known simply as Zingerman’s Mail Order). As CFO, Tom has championed open book management and taken the lead on educating staff about the financial ins and outs of the business.

In 2004, Tom was introduced to the concepts of Lean Manufacturing popularized by Toyota. Building on his experience with open book finance, Tom worked to bring the philosophy of continuous improvement and waste elimination to Mail Order. For the last 10 years Tom has been practicing Lean thinking though process improvement, class development and teaching.

In 2008, Tom was inspired by the financial crisis to start Maker Works. Maker Works is 11,000 sq ft manufacturing facility that is operated like a health club. Individuals or businesses purchase memberships to have access to high-tech tools like laser cutters, 3D printers and CNC plasma cutters. The mission of Maker Works is to democratize the tools of manufacturing to foster job creation, community and self-sustainability.

The Whole Me

He lives in the New York City area with his wife. On weekends, you’ll find him on his bike, on the tennis court, on his skis, at the movies, or cheering for the Seattle Seahawks. His greatest joy is seeing leader’s thrive by having the impact on the lives of those they lead. Helping leaders find their voice, and use it to serve their organization’s greater good is what gets him up every morning. In his office, Ron has a collection of antique door knobs, door knockers and skeleton keys. Every day, they remind him that life is about finding and pursuing the open doors in front of you, and making sure those doors open for others. In the morning, one of his favorite routines is picking the coffee mug in the conference room from among his collection. Each mug hails from a difference experience and person in his life, and helps him begin his day remembering to be grateful for all those in his life who’ve been part of his story.

Previously, Alan served as Director of Development for Nephron Pharmaceuticals Corporation, a pharmaceutical manufacturer and 503(b) outsourcing facility located in West Columbia, South Carolina.

During his nearly 15 years in higher education, Alan served as Professor and Kennedy Chair of the Kennedy Pharmacy Innovation Center at the University of South Carolina College of Pharmacy. Previously, Alan served as an Associate Professor and Co-Director of the Leadership Degree Option Program at the University of Oklahoma College of Pharmacy, receiving their Teacher of the Year Award in 2011. Furthermore, Alan has taught courses at both the professional and graduate levels, specializing in the areas of leadership, law, ethics, human resources management, marketing and entrepreneurship.

Alan is also a graduate of the Georgetown University Leadership Coaching Certificate Program and licensed as a professional certified coach (PCC) with the International Coach Federation. Prior to starting Summit Partner Services, a company dedicated to helping individuals, teams and communities flourish and thrive, Alan served as a Senior Consultant with GiANT Worldwide, a company dedicated to multiplying and cultivating engaged leaders. Alan also served as Chief Operating Officer of SALLT, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving leaders from the public, private and social sectors by helping them leverage their passion, skills and influence for the common good of the city. 

Alan and his wife Laurie live in Edmond, Oklahoma, where they love to hike (especially in Montana) and eat ice cream (not necessarily in that order) with their 7-year old golden doodle Sully and 1-year old mini golden doodle Roz.

Microsoft and previously served as Director of Worldwide Health. Tom works with

providers, payors and life science organizations in planning & implementing

innovative solutions that improve the quality and efficiency of health services

delivered around the globe.

Tom focuses on strategies for digital transformation applied to performance

optimization including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML) and

Cognitive Services. He previously served as Director of Organizational

Performance for Microsoft’s health incubator (Health Solutions Group).

Prior to Microsoft Tom served as a Senior Director at GE Healthcare with global responsibilities for revenue cycle analytics and operational performance solutions.

Lawry was founder and CEO of Verus, a healthcare software company

named as one of the Top 100 Fastest Growing Washington Companies for

three consecutive years and to the Deloitte Fast 500 Technologies list.

For twelve years Lawry served in various executive management roles in

hospitals and integrated delivery networks. He has published numerous

articles on using technology to innovate healthcare. His last book, Artificial

Intelligence in Healthcare: A Leader’s Guide to Winning in the New Age of

Intelligent Health Systems, was a HIMSS 2020 Bestseller. His new book is

Hacking Healthcare – How AI and the Intelligence Revolution will Reboot an

Ailing System (Coming in July 2022 from Taylor & Francis Publishing).
