WEEK 52 SUMMARY

The Prophet Joseph Smith declared, “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it” (Teachings of Presidents of the Church: Joseph Smith [2011], 49). Over 160 years later, this statement inspired the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles to publish “The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles” in honor of the 2,000th anniversary of the Savior’s birth (see Russell M. Nelson, “Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives,” Ensign or Liahona, May 2017, 40).

As Latter-day Saints, we rejoice in the blessing of continuing revelation through modern prophets and apostles. We are thankful for their inspired words of counsel, warning, and encouragement. But most of all, we are blessed by their powerful testimonies of Jesus Christ—at Christmastime and throughout the year. These are more than just stirring words of skilled writers or public speakers or insights from scriptural experts. They are the words of God’s chosen, called, and authorized “special witnesses of the name of Christ in all the world” (Doctrine and Covenants 107:23).

The Articles of Faith articulate foundational beliefs of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, including the Godhead of Father, Son, and Holy Ghost; personal accountability for sins; salvation through Christ's Atonement via faith, repentance, baptism by immersion, and receiving the Holy Ghost; priesthood authority and primitive church organization with prophets and apostles; spiritual gifts like prophecy and healing; the Bible and Book of Mormon as scripture; ongoing revelation; the gathering of Israel, Zion in America, Christ's millennial reign, and earth's paradisiacal renewal; religious freedom; obedience to laws; and pursuing virtues like honesty, chastity, and benevolence. Official Declaration 1 (1890) ended plural marriage under revelation to President Wilford Woodruff to comply with U.S. laws and protect Church operations. In June–August 1833, the Saints in Kirtland and Missouri received revelations addressing both sacred building and spiritual preparation. Section 94 directed the construction of two key structures in Kirtland—a printing house and a church building—emphasizing order, planning, and consecrated labor as essential to Zion’s growth. Section 95, a rebuke and encouragement, reminded the Saints that their delay in building the Kirtland Temple was disobedience; yet God, in mercy, promised His presence, endowment of power, and angelic visitations if they acted faithfully. Section 96 provided direction regarding the French farm in Kirtland, appointing stewardship over the land for the welfare of the Church, reflecting the law of consecration in practice. Finally, Section 97, sent to Missouri during increasing persecution, counseled the Saints on building the Lord’s house in Zion (Independence), teaching that Zion is defined by the pure in heart, that chastisement is an expression of God’s love, and that righteousness and temple-centered worship bring both divine protection and peace. Lesson Summary:

Doctrine and Covenants sections 6 through 9 contain revelations given to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery. These sections address Oliver Cowdery's role as a scribe and his desire to translate, emphasizing the importance of seeking spiritual guidance. In these revelations, the Lord assures Oliver of His support and guidance if Oliver asks with sincerity, seeks wisdom, and studies the scriptures. They highlight the processes of personal revelation and the importance of fear not and doubt not in one's journey of faith. The Lord assures that if asked sincerely, the Spirit will confirm truths by providing peace to one's mind and heart.

Section 4 provides guidance on qualifications for those who wish to serve in God's work, highlighting faith, hope, charity, and love. Section 5 focuses on the role of witnesses to the Book of Mormon, introducing Martin Harris's opportunity to become one of the witnesses if he remains faithful, and reassures the truth of the Book of Mormon through divine witnesses.

“The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn to Their Fathers”

January 20 – January 26, 2025

WEEK 04 SUMMARY

Lesson Summary:

Doctrine and Covenants 2 reveals the prophecy that Elijah will return before the great day of the Lord to restore priesthood authority, turning the hearts of the fathers to the children and vice versa. In "Joseph Smith—History" 1:27–65, Joseph Smith details his experiences from receiving the First Vision, his persecutions, youthful mistakes, and the visitations of the angel Moroni, who instructs him about the Book of Mormon plates. Moroni repeatedly visits Joseph, explaining the importance of the plates and the role Joseph is to play. Joseph faces persecution and challenges as he prepares to fulfill his divine calling and eventually gains possession of the plates, beginning the translation process with the help of others like Martin Harris, who confirms the authenticity of the characters with scholars. The narrative highlights Joseph's faith, trials, and the miraculous support he receives in his prophetic mission.
