Each of your co-hosts put together a list of movies they thought were good enough to recommend. Two lists were procured.  This included a list of horror films and a list of other speculative fiction films. Afterwards we then combined those lists and came up with the Dark Discussions definitive lists, in both categories, as best of the year. When a family of four head to their rural vacation home, they stop at a rest area to grab some food. When the counter clerk can’t take cash, a friendly man in line pays for their meal. Unfortunately the friendly stranger has his eyes upon the teenage daughter. And his kindness soon turns into a nefarious plot.

SHAITAAN stars Janki Bodiwala along with Ajay Devgn, Anngad Raaj, Jyothika, and R. Madhavan as the stranger. The movie has received mixed to low reviews by both critics and audiences alike. Directed by Zack Snyder, written by David Hayter and Alex Tse, and starring Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Good, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was not the success that the studio had hoped. With the usual debate between the fans of the graphic novel and superheroes in general, backlash and praise were both the norm.

Now fifteen years later, the movie has become somewhat of a cult classic. With its fabulous special effects, splendid acting, and changes to the story to make it fit within a movie length, the film, though polarizing, continues to find audiences through streaming. Pop singer Skye Riley (Naomi Scott) is about to go on tour. Its a new beginning for her after a car accident that injured her back and left her boyfriend and actor Paul Hudson (Ray Nicholson) dead. Recovering from drug abuse, no doctor will prescribe her painkillers for her back pain. When she meets up with a drug dealer, he begins freaking out that some sort of entity is following her.

Picking up right where the prior film ended, SMILE 2 follows the same antagonist from the original. Receiving fairly good reviews from critics and audiences alike, the movie almost tripled its $28M USD budget with a profit of close to $110M USD. Ben Mears (Lewis Pullman) returns to his childhood home of Jerusalem’s Lot as he begins to write a tale about an old dark house entitled the Martsten House which overlooks the town. At the same time two European immigrants set up an antiques store on main street. When a boy disappears, the local police chief begins to suspect that one of the new arrivals may be the perpetrator.

Immediately, the film production and what was screened was mediocre at best. As a result, the movie was shelfed as producers tried to decide what to do with it. But still, some big names were involved with the production. James Wan produced and Gary Dauberman wrote and directed. Bobby (Clayne Crawford) is the mayor of the only town on an island off the Atlantic Canadian coast. A small dingy appears by the shore with a young baby in it. He and his wife, having just lost a pregnancy, adopt the girl. When she grows up, she begins to show miraculous powers of healing and fortune. Though Bobby tries to hide this from the community, his mother-in-law thinks otherwise leading to great change upon them all.

The movie is directed by Christian Sparkes from a script from four writers. Besides Clayne Crawford, other stars include Frances Fisher and Lara Jean Chorostecki. The film was originally did the festival circuit in 2023 before a full release in 2024. With very good reviews, the movie had a short lived window of note. When a wealthy American family of Korean ancestry believes that medicine will not cure a mysterious illness of their new born, they enlist two “Mu” (or shamans) to get to the bottom of what may be a long lasting curse that has followed the Americans from generation to generation.

The film is written and directed by Jae-hyun Jang and the cast includes superstar Min-sik Choi (OLDBOY 2003) in a very different role than some of his previous. Approached by a company called The Substance, she is offered a chance to create a younger and better version of herself using their experimental medication. Things alas don’t turn out all that well.

The film is directed and written by Coralie Fargeat (REVENGE (2017) and also stars Margaret Qualley. Released to the festival circuit and nominated for the Palme D’Or at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival while winning best screenplay. When graffiti artist, Emily (Josie Rogers), finds a standalone door in the middle of a cellar of an abandoned building, she opens it and disappears. The Scottish film is written and directed by Graham Hughes. Besides Josie Rogers, the cast includes Annabel Logan, Joma West, and Paddy Kondracki. In a city of complete shadows, Bannon (Martin Rispau) replays phone messages of a woman talking about the darkness falling.  Trying to survive, he hears on walkie-talkie through random survivors that there is daylight with only certain areas pocketed with the darkness.  He sets off through the streets and buildings trying to get to the outer edges of the city in hoping to finding deliverance.

INTO THE ABYSS is directed by Matias Xaier Rispau from a screenplay he co-wrote by the ambiguous Boris C. Marine researcher, Sophia (Berenice Bejo), while on an expedition in the Pacific focusing on pollution related to shark habitats, watches in horror as her husband and friends all get eaten by the animals. Years later, environmentalists come to her and claim that one of the sharks that she and her crew had tagged on that mission is now in the Seine River and endangering the city.

The movie got some early buzz when it appeared June 5, 2024 on Netflix. Was it because the movie stood above other shark films or was it simply the mass advertisement on the front page of the Netflix app that gave it notice. Two new filmmakers, brothers Danny and Michael Philippou, directed this surprise A24 hit. Receiving fairly impressive reviews from reviewers while being enjoyed by audiences, the movie made $92M USD at the box office against a budget of $4.5M USD. Night Owls With Jack Delroy is one of the many, but most successful, variety talk shows that are competing with Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show. While beginning to wane in the ratings, Jack (David Dastmalchian) and his team decide to try to make an epic Halloween special including psychics, magicians, and parapsychologists as guests. Unfortunately for everyone involved the supernatural may actually be a real thing.

The movie originally made its premiere in 2023 at the SXSW film festival and received some buzz because of it. Released to theaters on March 22nd, 2024, and then on April 19th, 2024 it arrived to Shudder. Receiving excellent reviews by critics, the Cairnes brothers written and directed film, has also been had positive feedback by audiences too. Your co-hosts take a look at this new film and give their thoughts.

Rather than discuss the intricacies of the story, the movie stars an all-star cast.  Timothee Chalamet plays the lead role of Paul Atreides who may or may not be a promised messianic hero.  Also in the cast is Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Javier Bardem, Christopher Walken, Florence Pugh, among many others.

DUNE: PART TWO (2024) received glowing reviews from critics.  With its theatrical success, Warner Brothers appears to have green lit the second book in Frank Herbert’s series DUNE:  MESSIAH.  Dark Discussions takes a look at this new film and gives their thoughts.

In a back alley of the London streets there is a mysterious peepshow that caters to a certain group of people. But beyond that, a mysterious website reaches out to the more adventurous type hoping to get them to join, both as the entertainer and the customer. But once one travels down this rabbit hole, will they ever get to change their mind, rethink their choices, or are they doomed to a new life that wasn’t what they expected.

Recently released to VOD, the movie has received six official reviews on Rottentomatoes with all giving it a positive review. Yet audiences have been more mixed with a score at 60%, still positive but not the 100% that the critics have given it. Your co-hosts take a look at the film and give their thoughts. Does it live up to the exploitation title, the horror elements it suggests, and the fact that it is an anthology?

Cecilia (Sydney Sweeney) heads to Italy to join a nunnery that takes care of those near the end of their life after spending their younger years taking care of the poor and sick. As a Sister, Cecilia learns the ropes and daily routine. One morning, a mysterious happening occurs that causes Cecilia to become the focus of attention to the leadership of the convent. However the strictness and rules of the convent contradict typical healthcare and her own wellbeing causing Cecilia to become concerned.  Her unease makes her begin to question if things aren’t what they appear to be.

IMMACULATE may look to be somewhat of a throwback to the nunsploitation of the grindhouse days, but it may actually be more aligned with the French Exteme Horror films of the early 2010’s. Fifty-Five Films, Sweeney’s production company, bought the rights to Andrew Lobel’s screenplay and brought on director Michael Mohan to direct, who she worked with on the film THE VOYEURS (2021). Receiving fairly favorable reviews, your co-hosts take a look at this theatrical release and give their thoughts.

Ruth (Maika Monroe (IT FOLLOWS)) and Harry (Jake Lacy (THE WHITE LOTUS)) head out for a camping trip in the woods of the Northwestern United States.  It was supposed to be a romantic time, with Harry even planning something special at an overlook of the Pacific Ocean that means a lot to him.  However, the two find the dead body of a deer that is covered with a black substance that doesn’t seem like any type of moss they’ve ever seen.

The film was co-directed and co-written by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen.  The film received buzz with it starring screamqueen Maika Monroe.  As for reviews, the movie has a fair score of 71% by the Rotten Tomatoes meter.  With its interesting twist in the middle of the film, and an unexpected ending that oddly works, your co-hosts take a look at the structure of the movie and give their thoughts on the film as a whole.

When a father and his young son head to Seoul to find a doctor that will be able to help with the child’s tuberculosis, they stop in a remote rural village for some food and shelter before they continue on their way.  When the town’s leader mentions that the village has a rat problem, the father offers to help.  He is a piper and says he can get rid of the animals.  Offered payment without even asking, the father begins the process, yet while doing so, the piper changes the dynamics of the village and becomes a threat to the town’s leader.

Synopsis:  Detective John Hobbes (Denzel Washington) successfully captures serial killer Edgar Reese (Elias Koteas).  On the day of his execution, Reese seems to have made peace with Hobbes, shaking hands.  But while dying, he appears unrepentant.  Days later, copy cat murders begin and drag Hobbes back into a crime wave that may be more than just done by a man.

2023 was a pretty mediocre year when it came to genre films. Horror and superhero films were mostly forgettable with the occasional gem that hit it out of the ballpark. We go into depths of some well known films like EVIL DEAD RISE, and some lesser known gems like VENUS and MASTER GARDENER. But we also look back at televisions series like LAST OF US and ONE PIECE too.

Then we take a look at some films and television shows coming in 2024. Will the new ALIEN: ROMULUS take the franchise in a new direction? After Ryan Gosling’s performance in BARBIE and Emily Blunt nominated for an Oscar for her role in OPPENHEIMER, will their new film THE FALL GUY that’s coming be a major hit? Also discussed is how some of the 2024 movies that may not make the Dark Discussions Podcast may actually be picked up on Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews as episodes. Each of your co-hosts put together a list of movies they thought were good enough to recommend. Two lists were procured.  This included a list of horror films and a list of other speculative fiction films. Afterwards we then combined those lists and came up with the Dark Discussions definitive lists in both categories as best of the year. Some obvious films like MEGAN (M3GAN) and EVIL DEAD RISE appear but also little known films like THE ARTIFICE GIRL and VENUS were too.

In the early 1960’s within a small isolated farming community in Illinois, every Halloween a monster known as Sawtooth Jack rises from the local cornfields.  Years ago he entered the local church and cursed the town to with failed crops and hardship.  Now, each year, a custom has been set in place.  Each Halloween, the teenage boys of the town must hunt Sawtooth Jack before he curses the town once more.

The movie is based on the novel with the same name written by author Norman Partridge.  After being held back for a year, the movie was released to digital VOD as the last film by MGM/United Artist before their absorption into the Amazon movie fold.  Your co-hosts take a look at David Slade’s “comeback” and give their thoughts on the movie.

Kamikaze pilot Koichi (Ryunosuke Kamiki) survives the war only to return to Tokyo and finding it in ruins.  Trying to survive like the rest of post war Japan, he befriends a young woman, Noriko (Minami Hamabe), and the two along with an orphaned baby girl create a hodge-podge family.  Koichi gets a job clearing sea mines.  While working with his crew, Godzilla appears and endangers all of Tokyo.

In a world not far in the future, “rottens” have begun popping up.  Demons, or some sort of outer being, possesses people who begin to bloat and become deformed.  However, one must exorcise them otherwise the evil will spread where folks begin to kill each other or do horrible harm to others.  Two brothers, Pedro and Jaime, are stuck in the middle of a new “outbreak” and must figure how to save their families.

The movie has received fairly good reviews.  Filled with gore and over the top set pieces, some believe the film could become destined to be a cult classic.  The audience is dropped into the middle of this world unaware that things are “different”.  Does it work?  Your co-hosts take a look at this new film and give their thoughts.

In a dystopian future, the government has put in place judges to keep order in place. When a slum tower block becomes the haven of kingpin Madeline Madrigal (Lena Headey), Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is sent along with rookie Cassandra Anderson (Olivia Thirlby) to investigate three murders. After the capture of one of Madeline’s lieutenants that could implicate her in the murders, she shuts down the building and Judge Dredd is now fighting for his life.

DREDD was directed by Pete Travis from a script by A-lister Alex Garland who’s known for the novel, THE BEACH, as well as director of EX MACHINA (2015) and ANNIHILATION (2018) as well as the screenwriter for 28 DAYS LATER (2002). The movie was originally released in 3D and shockingly failed at the box office. Receiving great reviews, and paying tribute to the graphic novel that it is based on, your co-hosts take a look at the movie and are joined by special guest actor Dan Lench to discuss the film.

Two serial killers, Bianca (Gianna Lutz) and Zeke (Adam Kitchen), have escaped from the mental institution they have been reprimanded to.  As a group of vacationers arrive at a remote retreat, the killers have taken over the facility from the owners and have turned the quiet resort into their headquarters to once again begin their murderous ways.

Not only is the movie a show piece for the talents of Gianna Lutz, but it is also another addition to female roles behind the camera.  The movie takes place in Texas not far from the Louisiana border, and brings the cluster b personality once more to the forefront of a non-supernatural horror film.  The co-hosts of the podcast take a look at this newly released movie and give their thoughts.

Police officer Neil Howie (Edward Woodward) head’s to Summerisle Island off the Scottish coast when he receives a harrowing letter about a missing girl. On his arrival, he discovers a strange society following a pagan sect. It’s a land very dissimilar to the mainland. May Day and a celebration of sexual freedom, the land is ruled by Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). During his search for the missing girl, an ominous conspiracy begins to form around his investigation and his life may be endangered.

Vicaria (Laya DeLeon Hayes) lives with her widower father.  Years earlier her mother was murdered in a random shooting and most recently, her brother Chris (Edem Atsu-Swanzy) was killed in a drug related gang hit.  Science is Vicaria’s thing, and she has learned how to bring back the dead.  Unfortunately, her brother Chris comes back yet isn’t the young man she used to know.

The movie was written and directed as the feature length debut for Bomani J. Story.  The film’s cast also includes Denzel Whitaker and Chad Coleman among others.  Released earlier in the year in a limited run, the film quickly landed up on VOD and the Shudder television network.  Chosen as a contest winning film by listener and podcaster Amy for the Halloween movie discussion, your co-hosts take a look at this new Frankenstein take and give their thoughts on it.
