          What started as a wild idea during the pandemic has grown into a movement—one that celebrates creativity, resilience, and the beautiful, often unseen stories of women living beyond city limits. Sadly (unknown to me before we recorded), they’ve announced they’ll be releasing their final issue of TrailblazeHER Magazine at the end of this year. A twist I didn’t see coming! (You can pre-order the final issue at the link below.) But Jan and Erin explain why they felt this was the right time to put a bow on their passion publication.

          This episode is one that really speaks to the heart of what this show is all about—authentic storytelling, community, and the rural women we find so inspiring. Jan and Erin open up about their journey from urban life back to the farm, what it’s been like to build something so meaningful together, and how they’ve used their platform to spotlight and relate to other women.             What started as a wild idea during the pandemic has grown into a movement—one that celebrates creativity, resilience, and the beautiful, often unseen stories of women living beyond city limits. Sadly (unknown to me before we recorded), they’ve announced they’ll be releasing their final issue of TrailblazeHER Magazine at the end of this year. A twist I didn’t see coming! (You can pre-order the final issue at the link below.) But Jan and Erin explain why they felt this was the right time to put a bow on their passion publication.

            This episode is one that really speaks to the heart of what this show is all about—authentic storytelling, community, and the rural women we find so inspiring. Jan and Erin open up about their journey from urban life back to the farm, what it’s been like to build something so meaningful together, and how they’ve used their platform to spotlight and relate to other women. We talk about the challenges of entrepreneurship, the lessons they’ve learned along the way, and what it means to close one chapter while trusting in what comes next.

                      Katelyn Duban is a first-generation grain farmer in southern Alberta, Canada, and the host of The Rural Woman Podcast. Kait opens up about what it’s really like managing crews, dealing with the pressure of a multigenerational business, balancing that with that social media and how she’s found success, and navigating the very real mental health challenges that come with the remote lifestyle of farmers. We also get into the power of mentorship for women in ag, and the sometimes overwhelming—but beautiful—responsibility of being the “next generation.”

I filmed with her for the first episode of FarmHER Season 6 and now I call her a friend — Megan Shanley Warren.

                                    Megan is the CEO and co-owner of Shanley Farms, a specialty fruit farm on California’s Central Coast that started as the retirement project of her late father, Jim Shanley. Megan worked closely with her dad to develop Shanley Farms as a brand of unique, quality produce — highlighted by Morro Bay avocados, passion fruit and Citrusburst finger limes — and after his recent unexpected passing, she’s taken over the operation.

                                    We talk a lot about their favorite crop, finger limes (which I first tried when filming her TV episode, and now I’m hooked!) as well as what it’s been like running the farm with her husband and three boys. Megan also opens up about losing her parents, motherhood, money, media and the lessons she hopes her kids carry forward from farm life.

                                    This one is a little bit of a tearjerker at times, but we have a lot of fun too! I asked all my burning questions about Farmer Wants A Wife — Megan’s brother-in-law Matt is one of the bachelor’s in Season 3! — and what it was like having the farm taken over by a reality TV crew and a handful of bachelorettes. We also share some funny behind-the-scenes stories from filming FarmHER, talk thrifting finds, and discuss our guilty pleasures.

                                    It’s stories like Megan’s that remind me why Dirt Diaries exists—to celebrate the women shaping agriculture while getting to connect with and know them in a real way, beyond their careers or roles on the farm/ranch. She’s not only built a direct-to-consumer meat business, she’s also launched a line of tallow wellness products, established the Five Marys Cowboy and Ranch Camps, opened a restaurant, written several books and teaches entrepreneur education courses— not to mention sharing her life on social media where she’s become an inspiration to so many women in agriculture.

                                    You’ve probably seen Mary’s name pop up again and again, and for good reason. She’s the force behind Five Marys Ranch, where she and husband Brian raise cattle, hogs, and sheep as well as four daughters.

                                     

                                    In this episode, Mary opens up about her journey from Silicon Valley to full-time ranch life, and what it really takes to run a ranch, raise a family, and build a business from the ground up — which she has now done multiple times. She’s not only built a direct-to-consumer meat business, she’s also launched a line of tallow wellness products, established the Five Marys Cowboy and Ranch Camps, opened a restaurant, written several books and teaches entrepreneur education courses— not to mention sharing her life on social media where she’s become an inspiration to so many women in agriculture.

                                     

                                    Mary’s got this no-nonsense honesty about the highs and lows of ranching and business that I think will hit home for a lot of you. She’s passionate, grounded, and one of the hardest working women I know —and this conversation is full of wisdom, laughter, and some tough truths we probably all need to hear.

                                    We also cover how she’s handled slowing down on the family ranch in Canyon, Texas, swap some funny stories about her Aussie bronc rider hubby, and Janie gets real about what it’s like filming a show like RanchHER. She shares her favorite moments (and toughest challenges) from Season 2, as well as why she decided to step away—trusting me to take back the reins.
