In this episode, we spoke with Liara Gonzalez, DVM, PhD, DACVS-LA, about her research on equine intestinal injury and recovery. Dr. Gonzalez’s lab was the first to develop a large animal pig model to study intestinal stem cells. It was also the first to identify these cells in horses and to grow intestinal stem cells into enteroids derived from pigs and horses. Her research is advancing our understanding of intestinal disease through expanded knowledge and use of equine intestinal stem cells in modulating mucosal barrier repair following ischemic damage.

This episode’s guest is Dr. Craig Barnett, Director of the Equine Veterinary Professional Services segment at Merck Animal Health, to talk about the Merck Equine Respiratory Biosurveillance program and what it means to veterinarians, researchers and the horse industry. That program is celebrating its 11th anniversary in 2019 and earlier this year released 10 years of information gleaned from this program.

Barnett, who has been a horse owner and equine enthusiast his entire life, received his DVM from the University of Missouri. After graduation, he owned an equine/small animal veterinary practice in Spring Hill, Kansas. After a few years, he began his career as an equine technical services veterinarian in the pharmaceutical industry. Barnett is the Director of the Equine Veterinary Professional Services segment of Merck Animal Health, helping to guide practitioners and educate horse owners on ways to better care for horses.

Barnett is involved in a number of equine industry boards and committees, including the Kansas Horse Council Board of Directors, Equine Land Conservation Resource Board of Directors and American Horse Council Health & Regulatory Committee. Barnett has served on many AAEP committees, including as Chair of the AAEP Serology Task Force.

Barnett boards several retired horses on his ranch in Paola, Kansas, and he enjoys driving a team of horses and trail riding.

In 2005, Bras completed a surgery internship at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital, and he stayed on as an Associate Veterinarian in the Podiatry Department of Rood & Riddle.

Bras is devoted to the betterment of the vet-farrier relationship and is an active participant in industry associations such as the AAEP, NEAEP (Northeast Association of Equine Practitioners), AAPF (American Association of Professional Farriers) and AFA (American Farriers Association). He is the current president of the NEAEP. In 2015, Bras was inducted into the International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame.

This episode of Disease Du Jour focuses on equine diarrhea. Every vet sees diarrhea cases, but how should you go about determining the cause and whether it is infectious?

Frazer discusses stabilizing the horse with diarrhea, IV fluids and oral medications that might help. She also discusses diagnostics for salmonella, clostridium Potomac horse fever, rotavirus in foals and those diarrheas that remain unidentified.

Other problems that a veterinarian faces with a horse that has diarrhea is the ability to isolate that horse, how you manage the rest of the herd that horse is associated with, and the management of mares and foals when one of them is sick. Frazer also talks about gastro protectants, how diarrhea can affect a horse’s feet, and when you can release biosecurity protocols when dealing with equine diarrhea.

Easley is an active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. He is a member of the American Veterinary Dental Society, International College of Equine Veterinary Odontologists, American Veterinary Medical Association, Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association, Kentucky Association of Equine Practitioners, Kentucky Veterinary Medical Association, and Equine Dental Vets (an Australian organization with world-wide educational opportunities.

For more than 30 years, Easley has globally promoted, lectured, and written about equine veterinary dentistry. Easley was the co-editor and a major contributor to Equine Dentistry, published in 1999 by Harcourt-Brace Publishing (Saunders) and printed in Spanish and German in 2002, and he has participated in more recent editions. The Veterinary Clinics of North America released an “Advanced Equine Dentistry” edition in the Fall of 2013 with Dr. Easley serving as Guest Editor and contributor.

Easley strived for more than 20 years to create a specialty board for equine dentistry, and in 2013, Easley and 18 colleagues from around the world passed the first boards given to 24 veterinarians. He received Diplomate status in the spring of 2014, when the American Veterinary Dental College Equine Specialty was formally recognized by the American College of Veterinary Dentistry and the AVMA.

This episode of Disease Du Jour focuses on Equine Dentistry. We talk about how much has changed in equine dentistry, the wide variety of dental diseases horses can have, the need for a good dental exam with the right tools, the use of radiographs, and what horse owners expect today in equine dental care.

This episode’s guests are Drs. Ernie Bailey, of the Gluck Equine Research Center at the University of Kentucky, and Samantha Brooks of the University of Florida.

Ernie Bailey, PhD, is a Professor at the University of Kentucky’s Gluck Equine Research Center. His key areas of interest are immunogenetics and genomics. He is interested in the genetic influences on the innate and adaptive immune systems that protect the horse from infectious diseases. Other interests include the development of the genetic map for horses and investigation of genes involved in the health of the horse, such as contracted tendons, extreme lordosis and dwarfism.

Bailey received his Bachelors of Science in genetics from the University of California, Davis, in 1973, then received his Masters in comparative pathology from UC Davis in 1975 and his PhD in genetics from that university in 1980.

Samantha Brooks, PhD, is an Associate Professor of equine physiology at the University of Florida’s Department of Animal Sciences. After she received her BS degree in agricultural biotechnology from the University of Kentucky, Brooks earned her PhD in equine genetics under the mentorship of Bailey. She then was awarded the Paul Mellon Postdoctoral Fellowship to study the expression of inflammatory genes in horses affected with laminitis.

In 2009, Brooks became an Assistant Professor at Cornell University’s Department of Animal Science. In 2014, she moved to the University of Florida and has moved up through the ranks to Associate Professor.

Her research program explores a variety of topics relevant to horse health ranging from gene expression studies to mapping of genetic disorders in the horse. Previously her research group discovered genetic mutations and markers for coat colors, height, sarcoid tumors and two neurological conditions. Ongoing work targets variation in gait, susceptibility to infectious disease, metabolic syndrome and skeletal defects using genome-wide association, genome re-sequencing and transcriptomics.

This episode covers the topic of Genes as Management Tools. We discuss how genetics touches equine veterinarians on a day-to-day basis; adaptation and evolution; fragile foal syndrome; OCD; roaring; reproduction; and infectious disease.
