New Life at the End of the Finish with Miriam Diaz Gilbert

This episode inspires you to keep on moving through your most difficult situations to get to the life that is waiting for you.

Miriam Diaz Gilbert is a very proud Puertorriqueña, whose mother taught her how to stand up for herself, after a first grade teacher placed a sandwich board over her with the words 'Chatterbox', in bold red letters, and left her in the school hallway.

To this day, Miriam refuses to let anyone silence her.

Miriam is an ultra runner, starting her 43rd event, the day after this episode drops, running for 72 hours and as far as her body will take her. The mantra that gets her to the finish line is the same as the one that gets her through devastating illnesses and challenges: "There's life waiting for you at the end of the struggle."

Miriam holds multiple graduate degrees in English as a Second Language and Theology. She is a vivacious painter, published author and professor for almost 30 years.

Her memoir, 'Come What May, I Want to Run: A Memoir of the Saving Grace of Ultrarunning in Overwhelming Times', is her latest publication, emphasizing her long distances as "healing miles". Miriam is working on a cookbook memoir with recipes that heal the body from contaminants in the American diet.

There’s Novelas and Then There’s La Novela of Your Life - Annette Chavez Macias Captures Her Soul

Becoming a published author was relatively easy. Quieting the voice telling her she wasn’t Latina enough to write her own story was the biggest hurdle.

Latina author Annette Chavez Macias always loved writing stories, never really knowing they would one day be filled with her Mexican American heritage.

A voracious reader since childhood, Annette would pick up any book she could, including her mother’s romance novels. The romance genre gave her almost immediate success in short stories writing under the alias, Sabrina Sol.

Still, Annette had a story in her head, heart and soul that wanted to be told.

Turning 40 was the catalyst to either do it or leave it all behind.

But when it came to writing the fiction novel she developed for decades from her own life, imposter syndrome set in.

The little voice inside her head told her she wasn’t Latina enough to write her own story.

Yet, even after taking decades to write it and facing 13 rejections from publishers, Annette forged ahead to memorialize her abuela and Wuelita, las reynas de su familia, and forever hold the story that had to be told.

Fast forward to today and Annette is thriving from her soul having published not 1 or 2 but 3! Novels since the time she told herself, “Just Do It”!

Grab your seat for today's guests heralded as the top screenwriters to watch in 2024 by the International Screenwriter’s Association (ISA)! In an industry lacking representation, these two highly awarded Latino Filmmakers are breaking all the rules.

Director Miguel Angel Caballero and Actor Luis Antonio Aldana are the soulful screenwriting filmmaker team bringing authentic stories of the comunidad to life on the big screen.

Growing up Miguel and Luis, independently, envisioned becoming the actors they never saw represented on TV and movies.

Discovering each other at UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television was the catalyst for a partnership that would upend Hollywood. Soon, they had a greater mission: To take the reins of filmmaking to fully represent the cultura and comunidad. The perfect blueprint for Cabaldana Alchemy Productions.

Doing so would require trusting their authentic voice, honoring their heritage and embracing their self identity as core pieces of a story needing to be told.

She shattered family patterns, crushed academic barriers, and now she's busting classical music out of its elite bubble, ushering in an era where everyone gets a front-row seat, especially those historically left out of traditional concert halls and symphonies!

Today’s guest goes way out to the stratospheric reaches of the universe for what she has been through to pursue her passionate dream as an international orchestral conductor, only to realize, that is wasn’t her dream alone, but for every person who felt left out, pushed out, unseen, allowed in but never accepted.

Jessica Bejarano, Mexican-American Queer Founder and Conductor of the San Francisco Philharmonic, talks about rising out of East LA threats, academia adversity and societal bias by finding the silver lining in every experience. Her dream of becoming an orchestral conductor was both for herself and for others: living passionately by creating music that would one day bring her mamá a life of ease.

But, when a Maestro in her Masters program told her to "go back to your country, you won't be one in mine", Jessica realized she had a universal purpose: securing diversity through representation in the audience, orchestra and epically, the podium.

Jessica never wanted anyone to feel that devastation, so she founded her own symphony where everyone feels welcome, accepted in authenticity and excited to become a part of the orchestral music scene. An iconic feat in a major cosmopolitan city!

She has changed the face, audience and sound of symphony halls forever! Bravo!

Latina Filmmaker, Chloe Caudillo, joins us this week for an amazing, uplifting episode of going after your dream and loving every step along the way.

Chloe shares how the difficulty of not fitting in completely to either culture, her Mexican heritage or American society, led to her vibrant, unique Sci-Fi storytelling, honed on expressing how she felt as a child through stories and art.

Her love of storytelling kept encouraging Chloe to take chances on herself and discovering the communities that supported her vision, nurturing lifelong friendships and ultimately, a chance at the Big Screen.

Drawing Inner Strength – Latina Artist, Victoria Blumenfeld, Escapes a Traumatic Cult to Heal Her Inner Nina through Art

Drawing inner strength is literally what Victoria Blumenfeld relied on to escape a traumatic cult and heal her inner niña through art. Victoria is an immensely talented colored pencil artist who turned to her innate artistic talent to create her own beautiful life.

Her Mexican and Salvadoran culture were whitewashed from the blanket of cult conformity. Even so, she was burdened with keeping the family together by taking on adult responsibilities as a child.

Victoria experienced losing both her Latina cultura and herself until that moment when she screamed, "Enough!" and fought to regain her self identity.

She took a courageous stand against a religious cult to begin her journey of self discovery and healing at the age of 21, taking a plane for the first time and reveling in the freedom of choice.

It's amazing how this soft spoken, yet fierce, Latina fought for her authentic self and now wants to help others heal from their traumatic childhoods through art.

That all changes today as Melissa Polanco, Founder of Ring of Color beauty brand, shares her passion for celebrating diversity with products that bring out the best of you.

Melissa shares her life journey of coming to the U.S., at 18, from the Dominican Republic and struggling to feel part of a culture that didn't look like her. Finding comfort and camaraderie in ESL classes, Melissa thrived in college earning a Bachelor's Degree in Zoology and a Masters in College Counseling, out of love of helping others.

It's this intelligent curiosity and profound empathy that ultimately fired up her entrepreneurial spirit to start a Latina owned beauty brand that focused on people of color, who were overlooked in the industry. Melissa aimed to soften the struggle for anyone feeling left out and encourage self love by dedicating products that accentuate natural beauty.

Her current lip products come in all shades and types to meet you on any given day. Melissa encourages self care and appreciation to emphasize that you are enough, with no need to conceal or cover up your emotions.

She shared her story on Univision's 'Despierta America' last September, helping her realize that not only is she enough, she is going places. But, not without her friends and customers that she values for getting her to this point in her life.

With makeup playing such an intimate role in expressing self, we need more owners like Melissa Polanco, who sell more than beauty products; she is gifting us self confidence to step out in the world and feel seen.

Representation Matters for First Gen Latinas in STEM with Amayrani Villegas

It takes a village... We hear those word often but don't always see the outcome. With the support of just 1 or 2 people, your life can change in ways you never would imagine.

Find out how today's guest, Amayrani MaryLeen Villegas Parra, a cell and molecular biology grad student, did just that. Amayrani speaks of the support of her family, the cultura and her professors to rise above the feeling of imposter syndrome and believe in herself again. She highlights never giving up on yourself and learning to ask for help, a tough lesson to learn in the culture of Mande!

Representation is everything so Amayrani, during her studies!, founded the Latinas in STEM (LSTEM) organization to assist high school and college students navigate the complex university system for funding, scholarships and programs. She would love to have Latinas working in STEM volunteer with LSTEM to work with students!

There's also opportunity to donate to help Latinas offset tuition, books and living expenses so more time is given to studies to succeed.

I'm your host, Consuelo Crosby, a first generation Peruvian and structural engineer, who set out to personify the Latina engineer and disrupt the stereotypical perception of plaid shirts and khakis. I saw the power that a young woman of color could wield if she chose to step out as her whole self rather than try to blend into the masses.

Getting my Masters in Comms Management at USC - Fight On! - had me crying for Calculus... but it got me here, sharing personal stories and engaging with others on succeeding in life choices with your unique personalities, talents and intelligence, supported by preceding generations and current day know-how.
