Rose Ann was a successful C-Suite executive and ministry leader in the church. She was a working mom of four and a social drinker. Over the years, life’s stresses and a difficult marriage created an environment where her alcohol usage increased significantly. However, because Matthews faced hardships and danger growing up on the Westside of Chicago, his mother moved him out of that environment to Richfield, Minnesota. There Demetrius took advantage of his second chance at success and became a well-educated man. Years later he returned to Chicago and learned the harsh reality, he was different. His ex-girlfriend laughed at him for being well dressed and his former peers made fun of him for being well-spoken. But that didn’t stop him. He began his career working as an intern working for a Minnesota-based corporation. Matthews held a series of corporate accounting positions including, database developer and programmer, IT Director, and many other project management responsibilities during the next 10 years. Then, realizing his worth, he branched off on his own and started an IT Distribution and Consulting Firm. He ran into complications and denials within America and started his journey in South Korea.

With determination Matthews traveled throughout Asia alone, meeting electronic manufacturers, negotiating prices, and creating a supply chain. Soon enough Demetrius Matthews became one of the largest IT distributors and resellers in his sector to the present day.

Furthermore, Matthews took on many other tasks. Saddened by how many black boys and men were killed and imprisoned he created his chain of music and recording studios in local shopping malls. These studios were set up with state-of-the-art recording equipment as well as high-end video cameras to create music and music videos. It was by no accident that John Giordano chose addiction treatment as his life’s work. Growing up the son of a heroin dealer and trying to cope with the trauma of being molested as a young boy, he fell hard into drugs and alcohol. Over thirty-five years ago, at the urging of his family, John entered rehab. He emerged a changed man - committed to helping others afflicted by this hideous disease. His new path required new knowledge. Light Skin Gone to Waste, with Toni Ann

Toni Ann Johnson won the 2021 Flannery O'Conner Award for her linked story collection Light Skin Gone to Waste, selected for the prize and edited by Roxane Gray. Short fiction and essays have appeared in The Los Angeles Times, The Emerson Review, Hunger Mountain, Callaloo Journal, Xavier Review, and many other online and print publications. A novel, Remedy For a Broken Angel was released in 2014 and earned a 2015 NAACP Image Award nomination.

In 2020, Johnson's novella Homegoing won Accents Publishing's inaugural novella contest. The book was released in May 2021.

Johnson's screenwriting career began with a fellowship to the Sundance Screenwriter's Lab where she was invited to adapt her stage play, Gramercy Park is Closed to the Public. She went on to write assignments for studios, networks, and production companies including Touchstone, ABC, Warner Brothers, Caravan Pictures, Paramount, HBO, Lifetime, Showtime, Fox Television, and Summit Entertainment.

She is a two-time winner of the Humanitas Prize: first, for her Disney/ABC screenplay, Ruby Ridges, the true story of a child who integrated the New Orleans public school system (for which she also won a Christopher Award). She won a second Humanitas Prize in 2004 for Crown Heights, another true story she developed and wrote for Showtime Television about the Crown Heights riots of 1991. Johnson wrote the TV movie The Courage to Love, as well as the FOX TV pilot, Save The Dance (based on the feature film on which she was a participating writer). She co-wrote the feature film Step Up 2: The Streets, the second installment of the successful Step Up Franchise.

When asked who he is, Paul likes to say "a child of God and ambassador of Christ", because he's learned that these elements of his identity supersede and shape the rest.
