Because of our sin, we tend to stay blind to what God is doing. We wonder what God is doing or if he is really in control. We misunderstand that God is using the greatest suffering to bring about the greatest victory. Jesus willingly suffers, dies, and is buried to fulfill and porve everything that was ever written about him. The gospel shows how Jesus was using the greatest evil in the sinful hearts of man to bring about the good possible. The full redemption and salvation to every one who would put their faith and Trust in Jesus as their King.

We have all sinned and rebelled against God, and like Barabbas, we deserve the death penalty, eternal, spiritual death. The innocent One, Jesus Christ, took the criminal’s place so that the criminals could be set free. The King of the universe was mocked as a fake king, and he allowed it to happen in order to save us. If we have a Savior and King like this, what can we do but serve him, love him, and worship him?

Our hearts betray Jesus because we are selfish, sinful, and broken, and there’s nothing we can do on our own to change that. We have all betrayed Jesus through sin and rebellion. Christ died for the sake of sinners, so that we could be redeemed and be ready for his return. If we trust in his work for our salvation (his body and blood) instead of our work for salvation, he will redeem us, heal us, and fit us for his coming Kingdom.

When Jesus doesn’t do what we want or expect, it is easy to lose faith and patience and end up rejecting him to our own detriment. Jesus brings life through death, but we need faith in order to wait around long enough to see it. The resurrection is the greatest proof of the most extravagant gift, and the only right response is to an extravagant sacrifice back to him.

Instead of being driven by passivity and fear, we must remember that our actions have eternal consequences and, ultimately, determine what kind of reward we receive.

We often think that as long as we are near the things of God or the people of God, then we are ready for the return of Christ, but it is only when the oil of God, the Holy Spirit, is in us that we are truly ready. Christ died in order to cleanse us from sin and make us holy enough to be vessels for His Spirit. Then, after his resurrection, he gained the power to breathe his Spirit on all who have faith in him. When we are sealed and filled with the Holy Spirit, we are truly ready for Christ to come back.

We tend to let the cares of this world lull us into spiritual slumber. We get so entranced with our temporal kingdoms that we become in danger of missing the eternal Kingdom. Jesus doesn’t leave us uniformed about what will come before his return. He let us know we will suffer, many will be deceived, but for those who endure, when Jesus comes again it will all be worth it. Remembering the gospel empowers me to endure just as he endured for the other side of endurance is blessing beyond belief. It’s him!

Once we accept this, we recognize our humble position before a lofty God and can seek His saving power and lead others to find it as well.

When we choose to trust in Christ and follow him, we get his robe and are made ready for his kingdom. Church attendance is not enough. We need his robe!

Our natural tendency is to focus on earthly things, causing us to miss Jesus. Any focus on what is temporal will cause us to miss who Jesus is eternally and what he has done for us eternally. Belief in the gospel shows us that the American dream isn’t the standard for our lives. Jesus is the standard. In this life, we will suffer because He suffered first. His suffering was worth it because through his obedience to suffer, we were rewarded. In the same way, our suffering is worth it as well because others will be rewarded through our obedience. When we repent of selfish pursuits and instead trust in his rule, we experience his full power in our lives.

We tend overestimate our own ability and underestimate our need to be filled with the Spirit of God. We think we need the Spirit for the sensational or miraculous work, not the “everyday” work. We need the Holy Spirit not just for the Supernatural, but for the miracle of transforming a disobedient person into an obedient person belonging to God. This is what the belief in the gospel does. We tend to want to find another way to relationship with God besides sacrifice and shedding of blood. We look for a backdoor to heaven by trying to make ourselves good enough for God, hoping to find a way around the bloody, smoky altar of sacrifice. There is no other way for sinners to come into relationship with a holy God without atonement being made for their sins through the shedding of blood. The Altar was the first thing they saw. It stood in between them and the presence of God, reminding them that sin must be paid for with blood. This is the price of sin since the fall. God instituted it by making the first sacrifice in Genesis 3 to cover Adam and Eve’s nakedness, and God finished it by sending Jesus to pay for sin once for all on the altar of the cross. Through belief in the gospel, we can now enter into relationship with God forever.

We have lost our mission and purpose as the people of God and suffer the lack of power and significance that comes with such a failure. The church is a powerhouse built on the gospel and redeemed to make a difference in this world. When we all learn that and live it out, the gates of hell can’t stop her!

We tend to make piecrust promises to God, they are easily made and easily broken. Jesus fulfilled God’s covenant. He kept all the words of the law, and he kept the promises that the Israelites couldn’t keep, and then shed his blood to cover their sin and make them clean. Jesus is the fulfillment of this passage. He died fulfilled every piecrust promise that we made to God. Our broken promise of obedience is the obedience that he completed fully! And then he willingly was the sacrifice that atoned for every one of our broken promises, so that we could be clean and brought into an eternal, unbreakable covenant relationship with God.

We tend to believe that it is only what we do that defines who we are. Intentions of the heart don’t matter, only the actions that we take. Every action flows out of an overflow of the heart. What we do matters, but God cares most about our heart being yielded to him so that as image bearers we can honor and protect the dignity of each image bearers life. God loves people and he gave each person the dignity of life, and he has given us his law to ensure we protect it. He loves people and the dignity of life so much that even when we failed to keep his law, he sent his son to receive the fullness of his justice for our sin. He lost the dignity of his life. He was beaten, tortured, and murdered so that we could have the dignity of our life restored to us and could be given eternal life.

We tend to think too lightly of who the Lord is. We are so easily drawn to things that can serve our purposes, rather than living in a way that serves God’s purposes. Jesus sacrificed himself to bring us out of the slavery of our sins. The highest form of agape love. He gave us what we needed the most, when we deserved it the least, at great personal cost. Receiving his love through belief in the gospel makes God the central part of my life, and my obedience to his commands is simply a response of love to who he is and what he has done.

We know how to say the right things but all tend to struggle following through with our commitments to God. We can talk the talk but we struggle at walking the walk. God made a covenant with Israel that they were unable to fulfill. They said they would do whatever he said, but they were unable to do it. Because of his holiness we should be eternally separated from him, having no way to have relationship with Him, because we can’t follow through with what he say we will do. Jesus walked the walk that we couldn’t walk. He followed through and died in our place, because we couldn’t keep God’s covenant. But he did this to bring us into the covenant of being his people and living for his purpose.

The story of the good Samaritan is not a story that is about us trying to be better. We can’t please God with religion. The story of the good Samaritan is the story of the Gospel. The story show how religion leaves us dead, but Jesus came to bring us to life! Jesus uses this parable not to point to religion; he uses it to point to himself and the need to follow him.

Jesus took on humanity, which means he took on weakness. He experienced every trial and temptation that we could ever experience, but he never sinned. He overcame every weakness of humanity, even death. Since he understands us, and knows our suffering we can approach with confidence in prayer and confession, because we know that he knows what we need.
