220: Dropping Stories Like a Toilet Seat

Robert Radler is the director of the cult classic Best of the Best (1989) starring Eric Roberts, Phillip Rhee and James Earl Jones. Numerous guests have cited this film as a pivotal moment in their martial art and film careers, not the least of which are our two co-hosts! This film, Radler’s debut feature, was also a launching pad for the likes of debut stunt coordinator Simon Rhee and performer James Lew. Rhee went on to receive SAG Award nominations for Heroes in 2008 and Transformers: Dark of the Moon in 2012. He won for Heroes in 2009 and Inception in 2011. Similarly, Lew took home the 2017 Emmy for Outstanding Stunt Coordination of a Drama Series for Luke Cage.

Outside of Best of the Best and its 1993 sequel, Radler went on to direct Showdown (1993), several episodes of Jerry Bruckheimer’s Soldier of Fortune, Inc., and countless episodes of television, including Hercules, Silk Stalkings, Police Academy: The Series, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Power Rangers Zeo and LA Heat. A guitar player himself, he has directed music videos for George Thorogood & The Destroyers; Jackson Brown; Crosby, Stills & Nash; Survivor as well as the award-winning Turn It Up (2014), a celebration of the electric guitar. Radler’s passion project since quitting NYU grad school for film (some might say an obsession since first setting foot on the ship in 1975) has been an ongoing documentary series about the SS United States beginning with SS United States: Lady in Waiting (2008), SS United States: Made in America (2013) and the forthcoming Superliner: The Enduring Legacy of the SS United States, to be released in 2026.

219: What is the Future of Action?

As a stunt coordinator on student films from nearly every film school in NYC and guest lecturer at the School of Visual Arts Masters in Directing program, our co-host Stephen Koepfer has noticed that up-and-coming filmmakers seem to be more attracted to practical action than ever before. This seems contrary to what one might assume to be the case in today’s film industry.

There is a weird paradox in the action filmmaking community. Practical action has never been more popular. It is actively used to promote and market big budget productions. Behind the scenes videos go viral on social media. As a result more people are trying to become stunt performers than ever before. Young filmmakers are craving practical action. Yet simultaneously, existing performers in the industry are petrified of being replaced by digital stunt doubles, generative AI, declining numbers of productions, etc. So, we wanted to dig into the issue of practical vs. AI and the future of action film.

To do so we invited a group of emerging filmmakers on the show. Joining us on are Darren Tun and Jeffrey Colangelo of Code 10-10, the NYC stunt team that won the 2025 installment of 87 North’s prestigious Stunt Design Showdown. Also on the show are Bryan Uvaldo and Amanda Whyte. Bryan’s NYU thesis film, Playin’ Around, took best stunt performance at the Art of Movie Making Film Festival as well as honors from other festivals. These accolades are due in very large part to Amanda’s incredible performance in the film. Together we peer into the mind of these emerging filmmakers and answer the question: What is the future of action?

218: Live Long and Dance

Laiko Foroughi has been stunt-doubling Christina Chong (La'an Noonien-Singh) on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds for the run of the show. She joins us on Film Fights with Friends to break down the epic dance-fight scene with Spock in S3 Ep8 (a throwback to the Spock vs Khan fight in Star Trek Into Darkness). Laiko is a career martial artist, stunt performer, and actor who has also appeared in What We Do in the Shadows, Gen V, The Handmaid's Tale, Murderbot, The Boys, Scream VI and many other productions. She is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo and part of the 2017 & 2018 Canadian National Taekwondo Teams. No stranger to dance herself, Laiko has over a decade of competitive dance experience. She trained at CDM (Conservatory of Dance & Music) for 10 years, was a dance Major at Earl Haig Secondary School, and has trained Ballet (RAD Intermediate), Jazz, Contemporary, Acrobatics, Lyrical, Hip Hop, and Musical Theatre.

217: Black Rabbit’s Big D**k

Walker Hare is an actor and filmmaker who has appeared in Taylor Sheridan’s 1923 (2023), Artist Unknown (2024), The Sinner (2020) and most recently HBO Max’s Task and Netflix’s Black Rabbit. In episode 7 of Black Rabbit, Walker performs in a brutal fight scene, which is the starting point of our interview. We break down that scene from script to screen, how his Black Rabbit role related to his Artist Unknown role, his overall experience on the show, and his acting career. Our co-host Paul is also a career chef with an extensive history working in the NYC restaurant scene. We go into some of the parallels between Black Rabbit’s story arc and actual tragic events in the NYC restaurant world. Walker is also the producer and co-star of 2ND-C, an upcoming science fiction action film born out of the pandemic.

Evelyn Vaccaro is an actor and stunt performer known for her work in John Wick 3 (2019), Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022), The Naked Gun (2025), and countless television programs including Endgame (2022), Outer Banks (2021) and her 2025 Emmy Award nominated fire burn on FBI: Most Wanted.

Dancing, horseback riding, snowboarding are just a few of her skills. However, she is known for her expertise in water stunts and safety. An avid lover of extreme sports, she thrives on physically exhilarating adventures, rarely turning down a challenge. Evelyn is also a wildlife fanatic and has dedicated much of her life to working with animals and aquatic life. Her love for animals started early in life having spent many summers on a 250-acre farm where she learned how to ride horses, care for farm animals and camp. She is an avid Potcake dog rescuer, advocate of conservation, has made several trips to the Caribbean on rescue missions, and travelled to South Africa to explore many game reserves.

Behind the camera, Evelyn is as a Producer and Director with vast experience documentary filmmaking, video production, marketing, and multimedia production. After having helped originate the story line concept she was contracted as a Producer and Creative Consultant on Beyonce’s 'Star Power' video game. Evelyn created the 'If the Earth Could Speak' song and music video which she co-wrote and co-produced for Childfund International. Extremely close to her heart are her award-winning animal rescue documentaries It’s a Potcake Life (2016) and For Sato’s Sake (2023).

“How do I get into stunts?” The eternal question anyone working in the stunt business will be faced with repeatedly. The question often leaves us in a predicament. After all, we don’t want to crush anyone’s dreams. Everyone should be able to try making a living how they want. Having said that, there is no one path, quick fix or cheat code for getting into this business. What is very clear, however, is what NOT to do if you want to become a stunt performer. The simple fact is that people who ask advice often don’t want the unvarnished truth and disregard advice given. They want fast tracks. We working performers generally end up assessing how truthful we want to be when asked this question, if we want to answer it at all. We want to encourage but also be real. In this episode we are joined by stunt performer Anthony Hoang to offer up some hard truths and discussion about getting into the industry. Not meant to discourage, but to present a realistic picture of just how tough this business is – and what NOT to do if you are trying to break in.

Creating a television show is no easy task. The vast majority of television pilots, even the great ones, do not result in a series being produced. It is a labor of love and dedication to the craft of storytelling. Jamie Kilstein is an actor, comedian, podcaster, jiu-jitsu black belt, creator, and star of Blue Belts, his first scripted television project. In this interview, we dig into Blue Belts, what it took to get the pilot made, where it is going, its autobiographical influences, and the people that went to the mat to bring it to fruition. With heavy doses of straight talk about life, the entertainment business and old school martial arts, our conversation shows how every life lived holds an important story to be told.

Known for his standup on Conan, Showtime, and the BBC, Jamie began his career performing in coffee houses before making his mark at major festivals worldwide. In his early career he was mentored by Robin Williams, who said of him, “Jamie is amazing- he has a spark that energizes my conscience.” In recent years, Jamie pivoted from the world of stand-up into acting and immediately dove into performances on film and stage, immediately booking his first three auditions. With a deep passion for jiu-jitsu and unmatched humor, Jamie uses his experiences to connect with people, sharing both his mistakes and his growth in the process.

Special Halloween Episode: Eugene the Marine

Hank Bedford is the co-writer and director of Eugene the Marine, a genre-bending horror giallo film starring Scott Glenn, Jim Gaffigan, Shioli Kutsuna and Annette O’Toole. The film premiered at the 2025 Oldenburg International Film Festival to standing ovations and high praise for Scott Glenn’s performance, a performance Glenn has called the best of his career. This is Bedford’s second feature film, his first being the critically acclaimed Dixieland (2015). In this interview we dive deep into the homages and influences that contributed to Eugene the marine and Hank’s career as a filmmaker. During his filmmaking career, Bedford was Director’s Assistant on Bennett Miller’s epic wrestling film Foxcatcher (2015), Bedford himself being a lifelong wrestler. He has also worked on such films as David O. Russell’s The Fighter (2013) starring Christian Bale and Mark Wahlberg, as well as Scott Cooper’s Out of the Furnace (2013) also starring Christian Bale.

That lucky break has led to nearly 20 years of work, including Sucker Punch (2011), Man of Steel (2013), 300: Rise of an Empire (2014), Suicide Squad (2016), Justice League (2017), A Star is Born (2018), I am the Night (2019), and Rebel Moon Parts One and Two (2023/24). His enthusiasm has never waned. While his credits include big-budget superhero films, he treats every project as a unique opportunity to hone his skills, make friends, and deliver strong images. With a background in AMA motocross racing and competitive gymnastics, Kevin Rogers has been pursuing a career in the stunt industry since 2005. Soon after, in 2006, he started working at Drivers East. With countless hours of practice and an intensely competitive spirit, he has earned the reputation as a car and motorcycle specialist. His professionalism and experience have helped him achieve an ever-growing list of over 200 film, television and commercial credits in his 20-year career. Kevin is passionate about all forms of motorsports and racing, and when he is not hard at work, he can be found honing his skills at the motocross track, club drifting events, and driving schools around the country. Kevin was the stunt coordinator of the Sundance Grand Jury Prize nominee and Dramatic Special Jury Award winner Charm City Kings (2021, HBO Max). The epic police chase in the film was nominated for Best Work With a Vehicle at the 2021 Taurus World Stunt Awards.

Lauro David Chartrand-Del Valle has a remarkable film and television career spanning over 35 years. Having journeyed from an internationally recognized Stuntman, Coordinator, and Fight Coordinator on epic films like The Last Samurai and War for the Planet of the Apes, to directing, writing, and producing, Lauro is deeply involved in all facets of filmmaking. His work has been recognized with multiple Leo Awards, a UBCP/ACTRA Award, and a SAG Award for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble for FX's acclaimed series Shogun, on which he was Second Unit Director and Stunt Coordinator. Most recently, Lauro directed, wrote, and produced the feature film Protectors of the Land (available on Tubi) starring Oscar-nominee Graham Greene, Tim Rozon, Nathaniel Arcand, and Tanaya Beatty.

Sharlene Royer is an award-winning Canadian actress, stunt performer, and creative professional. As an actress, she has earned such prestigious accolades as a Leo Award, a SAG Award, and a UBCP Award. Beyond acting, Sharlène works as a stunt performer, assistant stunt coordinator, and stunt coordinator. Notably, she served as a stunt double for Halle Berry for an impressive 20-year span, from 2003 to 2023, cementing her reputation as a skilled and reliable professional. Sharlene was Assistant Stunt Coordinator on FX’s acclaimed series Shogun.

Michelle Waterson-Gomez is an American former mixed martial artist, actress and stuntwoman who has competed across various organizations including Strikeforce and the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC). She is the former Invicta FC Atomweight Champion. Between 2013 and 2014, she was ranked the No. 1 women's atomweight fighter in the world. Waterson-Gomez holds a black belt in American freestyle karate and has also trained in wushu, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, boxing and wrestling. Her rise to fame began as a contestant on the Muay Thai-themed Fight Girls reality show on the Oxygen television network. She was subsequently featured as one of the fighters in the MTV/MTV2 reality show Bully Beatdown. Transitioning from ring and cage fighting to screen fighting, her first role was in the film MacGruber (2010). Since then she has appeared in music videos for Megadeth, Thor (2011) The Lone Ranger (2013), The Signal (2014) and Olivia Cooke’s stunt double, Independence Day: Resurgence, and most recently opposite Tom Hardy in Gareth Evans’ Havoc (Netflix).

Joining Film Fights with Friends is Dr. Paul Heinzelmann, a physician, former clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School and Producer/Director of Safe Sets: Dying to Work in the Film Industry - a feature length exploration of systemic issues impacting the health and wellbeing of film workers. This critically important documentary weaves together candid interviews with technicians, union representatives, public health experts, and notable performers (Jon Hamm and John Malkovich) with the story of Dr. Paul's effort to conduct research into health and safety in the film industry. The cumulative impacts of sleep deprivation, toxic exposure, stress, long hours, accidents and other issues explored in Safe Sets are not only detrimental and unhealthy, but potentially deadly for film workers. Stunts-gone-wrong and other accidents happen all the time on film sets. Not just the ones that make the news – workers die with such regularity that the life expectancy of film workers is estimated by some to be many years shorter than the national average. Film workers frequently succumb to untreated injuries, illnesses, substance use dependencies and mental health issues because they lack the time and resources to schedule medical appointments or to simply rest and heal.

Mark Stanton-Kelly is a London based fight coordinator, stunt performer and lead stunt double with all round onset experience and skills. Mark is experienced and known for his ability to shoot and edit previz for feature films and television. He has a varied background in martial arts, is experienced in actor training and teaching fight choreography. Among the numerous productions Mark has coordinated fights for are Black Mirror, The Agency, Meg 2: The Trench, Ant Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and the upcoming Cliffhanger. As a previz shooter Mark has worked on Gangs of London and Treadstone. His very long list of credits as a performer includes Games of Thrones, Rocketman, Wonder Woman, Snatch, Kick-Ass 2, A Good Day to Die Hard and Thor: The Dark World. Any Star Wars fan would be envious of the productions Mark Has been Part of. As a performer, has appeared in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Solo: A Star Wars Story and Season 1 of Andor. Avaah Blackwell is a multilingual actor and versatile stunt performer. Classically trained in Europe, Blackwell began her career as a performer after graduating from Prague Film School's "Acting for Film" program at the top of her class. She has appeared in such productions as The Handmaid’s Tale, What We Do in the Shadows, 12 Monkeys and The Umbrella Academy. Avaah is most noted for her continued presence in the Star Trek universe including 28 episodes of Star Trek Discovery in such roles as Lt. Ina, Osnullus, and many other characters; 14 episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds as Rebecca Romijn’s stunt double and other roles; and most recently Star Trek: Section 31. Avaah is a longtime martial artist, which she has carried into her career as an actor and stunt performer. We start this interview with a breakdown of the Una vs La’an fight from episode 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. When not working on screen, Avaah can be found supporting her love for film by working for TIFF and Sundance Film Festival.

Tom Denier Jr. is a five-time IATSE Make Up and Hair Stylist Guild Award and four-time Emmy Award nominee. He has taken home two guild awards for his work on Saturday Night Live. Tom has worked on such noted productions as FX’s Pose, which garnered him a 2021 Emmy nod, Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), The Holdovers (2023), Werewolves Within (2021) and You Were Never Really Here (2017). 202: Wandering Into a Stunt Life

Tim Gallin began his quest to perform in feature films and TV after attending CW Post College on Long Island, NY. His first professional job came by way of the Gong Show in August of 1978. He was a contestant on an Elvis Presley special because Chuck Barris was a fan of The King. After seeing his old high school football coach, Vic Magnotta performing in Taxi Driver, Tim picked up the phone and gave him a call. Magnotta was a stuntman, retired special forces soldier, and Vietnam veteran who became close friends with Martin Scorsese while attending NYU. That fateful phone call created for Tim an opportunity to play football in the film The Wanderers. Through Magnotta’s continued offers to perform stunts, Tim met many of the people he would collaborate with over the next 45+ years. When asked about a favorite fight scene he performed in, the Marked for Death fight from the classic film F/X (1986) was Tim’s immediate response – and is the starting point of this interview that covers some of Tim’s epic experiences in the industry including stunt doubling Tom hanks on Splash and Steve Martin on Only Murders in the Building.

Military historian and weapons and armor expert Scott Boyett joins Film Fights with Friends for a comparative analysis of three films, depicting different time periods, from historic, tactical, technical, and theatrical perspectives. On the dissecting table are LAST OF THE MOHICANS (1992), WAY OF THE GUN (2000), and MOSUL (2019).

Scott is a consultant for the film, television, and gaming industries. He grew up in a family of antique arms and armor dealers and mentored under one of the world’s premier military historians, Dennis Showalter. Scott holds a Bachelor’s Degree and Master’s Degree, the latter from Norwich University, specializing in both European and Japanese medieval weaponry. His career began in England as an antique arms buyer, and he has since lectured on historical and theatrical combat at Dartmouth, Loyola Marymount University, CalArts, University of Georgia, and DeSales University, among others. Scott is a graduate of the Orange County Sheriff’s Regional Training Academy, is a California DOJ Certified Firearms instructor, and has 20+ years of training with modern firearms and tactics. He has trained extensively with former and current LAPD SWAT officers and former US Special Forces members. Additionally, Scott works as an 911 responder EMT.

Scott’s study of historical weapons and combat opened avenues in the theatrical world. He achieved degree certificates from the Baliol College (Oxford University), Circle in the Square (New York City), and teacher training from Shakespeare & Co (Massachusetts). After traveling for several years teaching and performing on Broadway, the National Shakespeare Company and Pennsylvania Shakespeare Festivals, Scott moved to California, where he continued acting, teaching and consulting on various productions. He holds a current California Entertainment Firearms Permit. Some of his credits include 50 YEARS ON THE DMZ and BIBLE BATTLES for The History Channel, INDIAN COWBOY and the BBC America drama COPPER. He was a weapons adviser for the popular video game RED DEAD REDEMPTION. Scott has worked with such notable talents as Tim Roth, Ron Perlman, Placido Domingo, Mercedes Ruhel, Anthony LaPaglia, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez and Richard Lawson.

Outside of his weapons expertise, Scott has a Shodan in Budo Taijutsu and throughout his career has trained Lama-Pai Kung Fu, Okinawan Go-Ju Ryu, American Freestyle Karate and Brazilian Capoeira.

A former school wrestling champion, Brett has since trained in swordplay, film fighting, knife throwing, bullwhip, and as an escape artist. Throughout his career, Brett has earned a plastic bone that holds his left eye in place and has fractured his femur, the largest bone in the body, completely in half. In college, Brett was a dramatic actor, performing in over a dozen Shakespeare plays. Larry Rosenthal is a SAG/AFTRA award winner and four-time nominated stunt coordinator/performer. He won for Best Stunt Ensemble on the television show 24, starring Kiefer Sutherland. He has been stunt performing for over 25 years and coordinating for 15. Among his coordinating credits are Austin & Ally (Disney), Pretty Freaking Scary (Disney), and Warped (Nickelodeon). Stunt coordinating young performers can be a challenging undertaking, which Larry breaks down in great detail in this interview. Extensive fight scenes are rare in children’s television; however, one particular fight scene in Cousins for Life (Nickelodeon) provides the starting point of this interview. A Governor of the Television Academy’s Stunt Peer Group, he has been a member of the group since its inception and has served on its executive committee on and off for the past 10 years. Cliff Moylan was born and raised in Dorchester, Massachusetts, to an Irish father from County Clare and an Irish-American mother from County Detroit. He is best known for his portrayal of real-life hero Sergeant John MacLellan in the Peter Berg directed film Patriots Day (2017). Longtime friends Steve and Paul sit with Cliff to break down his experience playing Sergeant MacLellan, the epic Watertown shoot-out scene, and his experience working on the film. Cliff has also worked with acclaimed directors Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh, Jodie Foster and Steven Zaillian, and Benny and Josh Safdie. Steve and Paul sit down with Cinder Chou (Writer/Director) and Kerry Lacy (actor) about their feature film Artist Unknown.

Cinder Chou is a Taiwanese American writer, director, and producer originally from the oft-maligned state of New Jersey and currently resides in Brooklyn. An early love for comic books turned into a passion for visual storytelling. Her work explores themes of otherness through a comedic and surreal style. Cinder’s early career as a production coordinator (The Big Sick, Jack Ryan, Red Oaks) gave her the professional know-how to launch her own films. Her work has screened at many festivals in the U.S. Artist Unknown is her debut feature film and has won numerous awards, including the Jury Award at the Art of Brooklyn Film Festival, Best Feature at the Broad Humor Film Festival, and Best Narrative Feature at the Artists Forum Festival of the Moving Image.

Kerry Lacy was raised in Malibu, California, by two professional actors and fell in love with acting at a young age. Her childhood was spent in theaters and television studios, and dinner table conversations included lessons on comedic timing and notes on dialects and accents. Kerry studied Tang Soo Do for twelve years, earning her third-degree black belt and working as an instructor before moving to New York City, where she studied acting at NYU's Tisch. She is a graduate of The New School, where she studied film, fine arts, and Spanish. In addition to acting, she is also an artist and DJ based in New York City. Artist Unknown is Kerry’s first leading role in a feature and she has been nominated for the Iris Prize Best Female Performance and won Outstanding Performance in a Feature Film at Art of Brooklyn Film Festival.

Doc Duhame is a stunt performer, actor, and stunt coordinator of seasons 6 & 7 of Ray Donovan and the Ray Donovan Movie. Our discussion begins with a deep dive into coordinating fights on Ray Donovan and branches off into discussing the industry and his long career. Originally from Long Island, New York, Doc moved to Los Angeles in 1979 to pursue a career in Television and Film. Three months later he was performing stunts at the Western Stunt Show at Universal Studios and being ushered into the business by legendary performers of the day. Over 40 years later, Doc has regularly doubled Gene Hackman, Jonathan Banks, and many others. Among many noted productions, Doc has worked on To Live and Die in LA (1985), Runaway Train (1985), Iron Eagle (1986), Swamp Thing (1990 – 1991, Stunt Coordinator), Quick and the Dead (1995), LA Confidential (1997), Face Off (1997), Galaxy Quest (1999), Payback (1999), Django Unchained (2012), Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014) and many more. Hugh Fitzgerald is a Los Angeles-based actor, writer, BJJ Black Belt, and fight trainer at the legendary 87 Eleven Action Design and 87 North. Nearly 20 years ago, a struggling New York-based theater actor, Hugh, had a chance meeting with David Mamet that would literally change his life. That meeting opened doors he never could have imagined and paved the way for a transformative career in the film industry.
