Danger in the Promised Land

Rev. Liz Heinzel-Nelson, Executive Director of our mission partner, Villages in Partnership (VIP), preached on a snowy January 19th service.

VIP is a faith based nonprofit organization whose mission is to eliminate extreme poverty in rural Malawi. Liz co-founded VIP after she and her family stepped away from serving Allentown (New Jersey) Presbyterian Church to live and serve in Malawi for one year. When they returned to Allentown they felt called by God to set up VIP in 2009, with a strategy to address and improve the six underlying areas human thriving: food, water, education, health, economics, and infrastructure simultaneously. In doing so, they have seen entire villages emerge out of extreme poverty.

Liz has dedicated her life to inviting others to come alongside the poor and most vulnerable, leading several teams to Malawi each year. I think you will find her work inspiring – as have those in this congregation who have traveled to Malawi to work with VIP. Liz and her husband, Stephen, have four adult children and two grandchildren.

Janine received her B.A. in English and Psychology from Rutgers University (NJ), her M.Div from Drew Theological School (NJ), and has obtained both her Diversity and Inclusion Certificate and Equitable Community Change certificates from Cornell University (NY). She currently serves as the President of the Latino Leadership Alliance of the Lehigh Valley (LLALV), a board member of Fairness PA, and is a candidate for ordination within the Presbyterian Church (USA) denomination. Janine enjoys spending her time with her partner, Steve, and getting into (good) trouble with her beautiful, kind, and smart children, Joseph and Hannah.

Whatever Paul’s thorn in the flesh might have been, most of us have had a thorn in the flesh in our lives. Fear and loneliness, confusion and doubt, physical pain, emotional heartache, or some form of disability – they are all part of the human condition, even for Christians. Indeed, we might say, “especially for Christians.” Because following Christ into the world simply increases the odds that we will be wounded.
God’s power, God’s will is best accomplished when we are weakest. Why? Because where we are weakest we get out of God’s way. When we feel weak and not strong, we lose all pretensions that we can do what needs to be done on our own.
Recently, a man greatly accomplished and respected by his peers was asked, “What is the thing you are the most afraid of?” His answer: “Being found out.” That is the fear that most human beings bear at one time or another – that we will be found out. What Paul is telling us here is that it is ok to be found out.

But God asks the two, “Who told you that you were naked?” Not why! But “Who told you?” Because God knew the two were always naked. They were created naked. And God and humankind felt no shame in their nakedness because humans were created in the image of God, and God called them good.
This is what creates the divide between God and humankind because doubt, temptation, and shame cause the goodness we feel about ourselves and the goodness we were created in to feel tainted. This divide is death.
This divine pursuit is an expression of God's grace. It means that no matter how far we stray, no matter how deeply we hide, no matter how low we fall to shame, God seeks us out, desiring to restore our relationship and close the divide of death that was established.

Liz Heinzel-Nelson, Executive Director of our mission partner, Villages in Partnership (VIP), preached in both services and spoke during the Faith Formation hour.

She talked about VIP’s efforts to bring clean water to villages in Malawi through the digging of wells. As I hope you know, our church has set a goal of paying for one well to be dug to supply a village with clean water through our FaithFULL Waters mission initiative this year. The money we need to raise for one well is $7500.
