The "ordinary" builds more lives than the "extraordinary."

Seldom does a big, transformative conversation, event, or opportunity come out of nowhere. Usually there is a trail of ordinary actions repeated through ordinary days that lead to success -- whether in relationships, health, or careers.

Conversely, ordinary actions which aren't taken lead to failure.

Continuing last week's series on "Stop the Splatter," we look today at the importance of With, Withdrawal, and Winks.

We need to be with people; we need to withdrawal and experience solitude with God; we need sleep, aka 40 winks. We are not merely brains and hearts boxed into an inert container. Our bodies are as much part of God's design as our minds and hearts.

Be reminded and encouraged about the importance of sustained "ordinary" practices to keep from drifting into dangerous waters or out to sea where you're lost. Keep living with intentionality. Your immeasurable, eternal, and irreplaceable impact depends on it.

Macro stories tend to come in two varieties:

1. Up close and personal — Stories about people and groups we interact with directly.
2. Far away and impersonal — Stories about people and groups we’ve never met. Paradoxically, we can be more emotionally attached to these stories, precisely because they’re harder for anyone to challenge.

The micro-stories we’ve been tracking don’t just exist in isolation. They accumulate. Over time, they reveal and reshape our character, our mindset, and our expectations of others and ourselves. And many macro stories — the big ones — begin as a single micro story that grew.

Begin paying attention to the stories you’re telling yourself — especially the micro-stories that play out in seconds. Here are some ways to track them:

1. Keep a journal and write down the stories you notice throughout the day.
2. Jot quick notes on index cards when a story surfaces.
3. Record voice memos on your phone in the moment.

Get curious about what you find. You might be surprised — some stories will be more judgmental or negative than you expected, and others will be more positive. Either way, don’t shame your stories back into hiding. You can’t change what you’re not willing to see.

The solution began by choosing curiosity over shame. Rather than trying to spray these weeds with a quick prayer of repentance and then zipping on, I stopped to ask why they were growing in the first place. The answer?

My imagination had become too small. Huh?

Yep, there's a correlation between the activity of a holy imagination and the presence of envy. This examination also revealed the connection between pain and cynicism and how to be attuned to the suffering in the world without being consumed by it.

All relationships rest on expectations. The more aligned the expectations, the greater the unity. The more misaligned the expectations, the greater the conflict. While this seems like a "well, duh," statement, the reality is we often never identify or express our expectations.

1. God has been expressing expectations from the Beginning.

2. Identifying and expressing expectations requires courageous honesty and vulnerability.

3. Identifying and expressing expectations reveals priorities, values, and beliefs about what we owe others and what they owe us.

4. Eliminating all expectations is ridiculous and shouldn’t be a goal. Aligning expectations with what is right, just, and reasonable is our goal. Any other approach isn't sustainable for the long term.

“Talk is cheap.”

“Actions speak louder than words.”

If a person claims to want one thing but their actions say another, what's the truth? The answer isn't always as obvious as it may seem. Three questions help lead to the truth -- whether it's for someone else or yourself.

1. Do they/I have the knowledge or skills?
2. Do they/I have the ability?
3. Do they/I have the opportunity?

  Discover how these questions help us answer the final question in our series on Life's Four Most Courageous and Crucial Questions. "What am I willing to do to get what I say I want?"

"Why don't I have it?" ("It" being a goal or desire.)

Many frameworks about goals and outcomes include the two questions we've focused on the past two episodes:

1. What do I want?
2. Why do I want it?

But many don't ask the third. Without answering this question, you can get stuck on a hamster wheel or move from one race to another but never achieve what you want. Honest and in-depth answers to this question can reveal:

• The presence and dangers of perfectionism
• Fears of failure and success
• Attitudes of entitlement
• Hidden roadblocks that can be removed with creativity and insight

We continue last week's exploration of four crucial, courageous questions necessary for all of life. In Episode 159 we unpacked, "What do I want?" Today we look at "Why do I want this?"

Not only does this inquiry aid in uncovering the motivations behind our desires but also dismantles the shame that often inhibits our growth. By addressing these questions with curiosity rather than judgment, we allow ourselves to engage in a transformative process that fosters empowerment and intentionality in our lives.

Understanding our desires and motivations requires courage and humility, particularly when confronting the possibility of self-serving reasons. Often, however, we realize the "why's" behind our "wants" may be shackling us to self-limiting beliefs that aren't based on truth. Also, cultivating curiosity in our relationships enables deeper connections and insights into the values and motivations of those around us.

Listeners are encouraged to get curious this week with two of their own "wants" and "why's" and with one "want" and "why" with their family members. It can be surprising and revealing what answers turn up!

These four words compose one of life's scariest questions. But it's a crucial and ongoing inquiry for those courageously committed to earthly excellence and eternal significance.

Two brothers made a request of Jesus who responded by asking, "What do you want?" They got a "no" and a heart check.

A blind man came to Jesus who questioned, "What do you want?" He got a yes -- and a life transformed!

A lady in Aisle 13 was willing to answer, "What do you want?" and it became an opportunity for ministry both to her and the stranger who asked.

God made remembering a big deal in the Old Testament, and Jesus made it a priority in the New Testament.

Intentional remembering help us:

• refocus from our circumstances to God's capacities when we're anxious and afraid
• refuel with confidence when facing discouragement or difficult decisions
• refuse to get caught in "last situation finality" cycles in relationships

When used to process, not prosecute -- ourselves or someone else -- intentional remembering is one of the most powerful tools we have that's always ready to pick up and use!

While I understand the good intentions behind this statement and others like it, this mindset does more harm than good.

Parenting is relationship work at its most complex, mysterious, and difficult. We know every other relationship arena – from marriage to business – requires actively acquiring knowledge and skills for success. Yet the shaping of human beings is supposed to somehow be innate – especially for moms. But this false narrative has a high cost.

Defensiveness and/or deep insecurity can result that leads to all kinds of missed opportunities, regrets, and adults in need of significant repair.

Innate capacity, desire, and protectiveness do not automatically produce knowledge and wisdom. If only it were that simple!

We can stop depriving parents, especially moms, of the keys they need to open doors of success with a new attitude!

Three key attitudes: gratitude, grit, and a generational perspective shape us and others far more than is evident at first glance.

But we can find peace and joy and say goodbye to chaos by reflecting on the promises found in Isaiah, particularly the four names attributed to Jesus: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.

When we stop and meditate on what is contained in these four names, our lives can be changed. We can find wisdom and direction; divine power to act on our behalf; a reliable, protective, and providing father; and not just a person of peace, but a prince of peace!

The candles had other ideas.

We must live, not merely hear or mouth, the Beatitudes during this divisive season. We must remember the poverty of all people, mourn for the world's brokenness, and extend mercy, rather than simply seeking political victory.

We must ask ourselves hard questions such as: How much time is spent in God's compared to the news? Are we more involved in prayer or polls? Do we hunger more for righteousness or political victory?

Why? I needed a powerful testimony and growing up on a small Kansas farm didn't seem a likely path.

Nobody highlighted the compelling testimonies of "special speakers" who came through our church so kids would conclude the path to a powerful testimony was delving into a life of crime or addictions. But that's the conclusion I reached as a child. Fortunately, my brain matured, and I made better decisions.

But understanding the unintended consequences of our beliefs is necessary. Today's dive into the last Beatitude requires we tread carefully in what we teach -- directly and indirectly -- from these verses.

I attempt to do this as I emphasize the need for a respectful understanding of persecution, contrasting the experiences of believers in free societies with those facing genuine threats for their faith. This distinction is crucial as it underscores the importance of not trivializing the experiences of those who suffer deeply for their beliefs. I encourages you to adopt a nuanced perspective, acknowledging the harsh realities faced by many while also affirming that faithfulness is not synonymous with seeking out hardship.

First, as part of the Beatitudes, this meant bringing people to peace with God. For centuries only priests had been entrusted with the role of being intermediaries between individuals and God. To entrust ordinary people with the call to help bring people into relationship with God was revolutionary. It's still Christ's call to us today.

Secondly, for anyone to be known as a "son of God" (which applied to both men and women), was radical. To be God's priest, king, prophet, or servant wasn't new. But his child? That signaled a transformative relationship of tremendous intimacy.

We are still able to have this close of a relationship with God and invite others to do the same!

For example, "may" in a legal document is entirely different from "shall." The first makes an action optional; the second makes it an obligation.

In Jesus's teachings in Matthew 5, two words (7 letters) in the 6th Beatitude make all the difference -- not only for the original audience but for us.

"Blessed are the pure" is an entirely different message than "Blessed are the pure -- in heart!"

In the original audience's culture, "purity" had descended to an exhaustive (and exhausting) list of "thou shalt's and thou shalt not's." Over the centuries people had added their own items to God's original list of moral, ceremonial (instructions on how to worship God), and civil (political) laws. These were easy to measure because they were external.

Yet these additions corrupted the entire purpose for the laws -- just as some of our laws today become more about serving a system than the people for whom the system was originally designed!

But "purity" based culture, wearing a "Christian" tag, is still around. It might be subtle to-do's that infer a higher Christian maturity -- like early morning "quiet time" ranking higher than mid-afternoon "quiet time." Or it may be stringent formulas like those taught during the height of the "purity-culture" movement which shared elements with cults.

The addition of Jesus' two words -- "in heart" -- made (and still make) all the difference! True purity always works from the inside out, not the reverse.

We unpack this truth today and look at how we can assess our own hearts.

We close the study of Nehemiah with three life principles -- two are sobering; one is encouraging.

Why does God place such a high priority on worship?

Fascinatingly, scientific research shows benefits to worship – especially corporate singing. It builds trust, creates community, reduces isolation, and affirms a positive sense of belonging and self. Worship is for our benefit – not God’s!

Worship re-centers us and helps us align with the truth we are not God but we have an intrinsic value because we are made in His image.

When Nehemiah and the people of Jerusalem and the surrounding areas gather to dedicate Jerusalem’s newly-restored walls, they prioritize worship – especially through corporate singing!

We can take a cue from their example in our lives as individuals and in our churches. “Music wars” do not have to divide people; music can be the most community-building activities we engage in. Church worship is the last place in the U.S. where people of all stripes can regularly gather and sing together.
