Identifying Your Podcast Audience and Growing Your Listenership

When starting a podcast it is important to know who you are speaking to. The truth is that most of us want anyone and everyone to listen. The problem with that though is that if we try and speak to everyone, we'll end up speaking to no one.

In this episode of Good Podcasting, we'll discuss the importance of identifying your audience, speaking to them directly, and growing your listenership.

Here are some key points from this episode:

Do your research. Before you start your podcast, take some time to research your target audience. What are their interests? What are their pain points? Where do they hang out online?
Be specific. The more specific you can be about your target audience, the better. This will help you create content that they're actually interested in listening to.
Use social media. Social media is a great way to connect with your target audience and promote your podcast. Make sure you're active on the platforms where your audience hangs out.
Collaborate with other podcasters. Collaborating with other podcasters is a great way to reach a new audience and get your podcast in front of more people.
Be patient. It takes time to build a strong podcast audience. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results overnight. Just keep creating great content and promoting your podcast, and eventually you'll start to see a difference.

Big News! YouTube Introduces Podcasts!

We've debated for awhile now whether or not a YouTube video is technically considered a podcast. But now YouTube has officially announced YouTube Podcasts! This new feature is currently being rolled out and we have much to learn about it, but in this episode Brian shares some initial thoughts for podcasters seeking to grow their audience on YouTube.

Major League Fans making Major League Podcasts with Boston Brazzell of Cincinnati Soccer Talk

The fan support of a start up minor league soccer team in Cincinnati that not only put the team on the map but helped propel them into Major League Soccer was one of the greatest phenomena I've ever experienced as a Cincinnati sports fan. Supporter groups popping up around the city. Pre-game marches to the stadium. Coordinated match day chants. All things I wish I could have participated in, but since I no longer live in the city of my youth, I had to find alternate ways to connect with those passionate fans. Thankfully I discovered Cincinnati Soccer Talk, a podcast for fans and by fans of FC Cincinnati.

In today's episode you'll hear from Boston Brazzell, one of the fans responsible for the launch and the growth of Cincinnati Soccer Talk. Though we could have talked soccer all day long, we focused our conversation on how a small group of passionate fans launched a podcast they weren't sure anyone would listen to and developed it into a network of podcasts that has become the model for many fan-based media outlets.

Getting Past Your 10th Episode

Believe it or not, most podcasts never make it past ten episodes. And that number is SHOCKINGLY high. There are plenty of reasons for that -- burnout (pod fade), too much work, not enough to say, etc. -- but ultimately, for most podcasters it comes down to your "why," or your reason for podcasting in the first place. If your why isn't strong enough, it's far too easy to turn off the mic rather than pushing through the challenges of those first few episodes.

In this episode, Chase and Brian ask the question, "does your why need more than 10 episodes?"

Having a Plan for the Next Episode with Christen Clark of The Collide Kids Podcast

Becoming a Confident Creator

Fear of the First Episode with Molly Sider of I Am This Age

Molly Sider hosts I Am This Age, a podcast full of stories and interviews with individuals who, sometime after 40 years old, chose to pursue the things they've always wanted. She is also a storyteller, a life coach and the founder of a podcast production company called Jellyfish Industries.

In today's conversation she shares how her podcasting journey began when she recorded her first episode in 2019 and was suddenly struck by fear and anxiety which prevented her from releasing it for another year and a half. But once she did, she says she was blown away by the response. I think you will be as well.

What Does it Take to Start a Podcast?

Millions of people right now are thinking about starting a podcast. For some it's a new idea. Others have been dragging their feet for years unsure of how to make it happen and what they would even talk about. The truth is, it's easy to start a podcast but most don't make it past their 7th episode. In this episode I'll share a few things I've learned about what it takes to create a good podcast so that by the time you hit your 7th episode you're just starting to hit your stride to go for the long haul.

Post-production notes:

I did very little additional processing of my audio in this episode. I thought I would need a de-esser with this microphone but as it turns out none was needed. I did very minimal work with the EQ settings and added just a little compression. Otherwise, the audio you hear is straight out of the Audio-Techica BP40. If you are interested in this mic, there's a link below to get you to it quickly.
