The final night for us with the Grateful Dead at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Maine, in May 1980. And on Mother's Day no less. It's an open secret the Grateful Dead always play great in Maine, so how does this show measure up to those who have come before it, or after?

Second sets opening with a Scarlet>Fire can't be all that bad. You know it, we know it, but it what rises from the ashes following this pair that can make or break a show. It is the end of the tour for us, so we gladly hang on every note, every word, watching time slip through our fingers, never to come back. It is bittersweet, and none more so than the fitting Brokedown Palace encore:

"As our adventure reaches a fitting end, it is time to pass the baton to those who will carry it forward. Brokedown Palace is a metaphor for the life we have shared together. While it hasn’t always been pretty or perfect, we tried our best to be a positive force. Life on the road is full of adventures and clichés, which, come to think of it, is a cliché itself."

Night five of the Grateful Dead's May 1980 tour brings us to the Hartford Civic Center on May 10, 1980, the second of a three-night Civic Center extravaganza. Hartford has a reputation for hosting some fine shows, and tonight is no exception.

This is it. The big one. Fireworks both on and off the stage as the Grateful Dead play what is most likely the show of the tour with a staggering seven songs before drums, causing much consternation among tapers, yet satiating the Hartford crowd. Some amazing stuff. And Comes A Time is the one song to rule them all. From the show:

"Comes A Time is the crown jewel of the tour. It will be placed in a glass viewing case in the Museum of Collected Deadhead Minds and occasionally loaned to others for viewing. The Deadhead Trust association has an endowment totaling thousands of dollars to ensure it is safely and securely cared for. The fact that we are here is no accident. Comes A Time appears to fulfill a unique role in our lives. As there are varying degrees of fandom, we await our turn, and the coaxing that brings forth a fully realized version of ourselves. "

The Grateful Dead appear at the Glens Falls Civic Center in Gens Falls New York on May 8, 1980 as they roll through their first complete spring tour of the eighties. Night four of tour on May 8th, one of the most auspicious dates in Grateful Dead history, and in Upstate New York! Could it be? For us it's the beginning of a three night Civic Center extravaganza. Glens Falls welcomes back Deadheads for the second time in less than a year for some minor league hockey rink action.

From the drop of the puck Jerry and the boys decide it's gloves off as they rip into an Alabama Getaway>Promised Land. Other highlights include the first High Time of the eighties and a delirious LL>Supplication

Set set highlights include a joyous UJB and Stella Blue. From the podcast:

The room fills with the scent of flash powder. In the smoke, a magnesium angel appears to warn us of impending grandeur. We dismiss it with a simple wave of the hand. There's no need, my friend; we understand the situation. It is truly a wonderful life.

On May 7, 1980 the Grateful Dead appeared at the legendary Barton Hall, on the campus of Cornell University, Ithaca, NY as they hit the East Coast for their first full-fledged tour of the eighties.

Night three of our tour finds us hoping the Grateful Dead can conjure some of the magic found three years earlier in the hallowed grounds of Barton Hall. The answer, "It's complicated," is a rather roundabout way of saying “no.” But as we all know, thoughts have a tendency to waver between the dark and the light.

Oh there are moments; most of them occur in the second set.

There is more than a hint of worry going on during this tour. Things are getting far out, yes, even venturing into the world of litigation.

Will the witness take the stand?

"In the charming town of Ithaca, NY, on the campus of Cornell University, stands Barton Hall, a nondescript building of stone, wood, and steel. A barn that has housed a show so legendary it’s stored in the Library of Congress for safekeeping. But any Deadhead worth their salt could easily pull comparable, if not superior, versions from their collection.

We’ve arrived three years too late to witness a show some consider as historically significant as the birth of Christ, while others dismiss it as “overrated” or “not even the best show that week.” Deadhead consensus is impossible. "

On May 6, 1980 the Grateful Dead appeared at Recreation Hall on the campus of Penn State University in University Park as they hit the East Coast for their first full-fledged tour of the eighties. The second night of tour brings us to Happy Valley, to witness it's transition into Even Happier Valley.

Right from the opening Alabama Getaway the band's mood is on display, but is this really the right choice for a Penn State crowd? Things defitiely get tranger in the second set.

Join us as we continue to tour from Baltimore, all the way up to Maine

"The Grateful Dead’s performance of The Other One is an incredible display of musical might. But as muscles contract to lift heavy weights, they relax afterward. So too with music. The music softens, the light returns, wiping away uncomfortable memories of the past. The song ends, and the battle is won. On May 4, 1980 the Grateful Dead appeared at the Baltimore Civic Center in Maryland as they hit the East Coast for their first full-fledged tour of the eighties. Spoiler alert: it's not all rainbows and unicorns.

The boys slog through plenty of grit and grime in this show. Highlights include the opening Half Step>Franklin's Tower as well as a wigged out Playing in the Band and a beautiful Black Peter

An excerpt from Playing in The Band:

"The band and this song highlight the common, raw instinct among predators, but the urge to survive is not optional; it is fundamental to life. Nature does not pose moral dilemmas; it simply follows the harsh principles of Darwinian evolution, a horror show, if you will. As you pause to consider this statement, Playing In The Band sheds its former identity, exonerating itself of any questionable actions encouraged during its tenure, and drifts, piece by piece, toward the drums."

Never had such a good time during the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. The Grateful Dead storm into The Beacon Theatre in New York City for two nights. Then it's a quick jump over the lazy Hudson River to the Capitol Theater in New Jersey for three more shows.

Never had such a good time during the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. The Grateful Dead storm into The Beacon Theatre in New York City for two nights. Then it's a quick jump over the lazy Hudson River to the Capitol Theater in New Jersey for three more shows.

Can the vibe inside the shows match the outside heat? Well, if it is summertime then the time is indeed right.

The last night of three comes with the pressure of a radio simulcast and high expectations on a Saturday Night in New Jersey. Can the Grateful Dead pull it off?

Here's a hint:

"There are thousands of people out there, listening at home parties, through headphones, on transistors, in the woods, at the base of an abandoned railroad trestle while sitting on cases of beer, in a field where a group of cars is arranged in a circle, doors and windows open, tuned to the only game in town.

We must let them know they are as much a part of us as we are of them. That’s right, it’s Saturday night!"

There is some deep soul-searching after last night's performance. The lack of an encore has thrust doubt among the faithful. Were we not worthy? Was it a technical issue? Were they ever here at all?

These questions answered and more in this meg-deep dive.

"Last night’s lack of an encore has emboldened us to the point of obsession. And the Grateful Dead will pay the price. C’mon, children, clap your hands and invoke the spirits of your ancestors. Awaken them to join us in what we will surely make a Friday night of redemption.

This is our band now, they work for us.

That’s how it goes in New Jersey. We gave you the benefit of the doubt last night, but not tonight. Tonight, you shall receive the full brunt of our ire.

But there is a road to redemption.

You will channel that energy into flowing musical notes that envelop us like a cocoon. We will emerge transformed, experiencing a revival of the soul. "

Never had such a good time during the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. The Grateful Dead storm into The Beacon Theatre in New York City for two nights. Then it's a quick jump over the lazy Hudson River to the Capitol Theater in New Jersey for three more shows.

Can the Grateful Dead keep the motor rolling as they kick off a trio of shows in New Jersey? There's only one way to find out.

Never had such a good time during the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. The Grateful Dead storm into The Beacon Theatre in New York City for two nights. Then it's a quick jump over the lazy Hudson River to the Capitol Theatre in New Jersey for three more shows.

Can the vibe inside the shows match the outside heat? Well, if it is summertime then the time is indeed right.

Night two at the Beacon and the Grateful Dead are determined to keep the energy flowing. You could ask for more than a monster St. Stephen>NFA>Stella Blue to open the second set. Forty minutes of pure Grateful Dead goodness.

Never had such a good time during the bicentennial celebrations of 1976. The Grateful Dead storm into The Beacon Theatre in New York City for two nights. Then it's a quick jump over the lazy Hudson River to the Capitol Theatre in New Jersey for three more shows.

Can the vibe inside the shows match the outside heat? Well, if it is summertime then the time is indeed right.

People get ready:

With that, the white-gloved attendants remove the banner reading "1,541 Days since the last NYC Show" from the balcony and carry it to the concourse, where it is folded into a tight triangle and stored away, never to be used again.

As they do so, take a moment to wish each other a joyful bicentennial. While the nation is preparing for its journey into its second century, a throng of Grateful Dead fans has spilled onto the Upper West Side, along with a crew of misfits, hangers-on, freaks, psychopaths, and yours truly, who lick their lips in anticipation of the return of The Magnificent Seven: Jerry, Bob, Phil, Donna, Keith, Bill, and Mickey.

The NYC run kicks off with Cold Rain and Snow. It is a tale as old as time: emotional stagflation and trouble with the missus. Regardless of who's to blame, we sure as hell aren’t gonna be treated this way.
