It's not about circumstances, but rather the active choices we make to resist growth. In today’s episode, I break down why we self-sabotage, the four most common ways that this cycle occurs, and solutions to break out of the pattern.

In short, your primitive brain wants you to maintain the status quo, even if your prefrontal cortex is committed to success. But, you can start to work with your brain to shift into a mindset that actually favors growth over complacency.

The first step is to actively decide to not self-sabotage. I share some exercises and practices to support that decision, like creating more safety in your nervous system and re-establishing your identity. If you're currently in a self-sabotage cycle or have a history of it, tune into this episode and let me know what resonates with you.

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform.

Topics Covered:

What self-sabotage is and some common examples of what it looks like

Choosing short-term discomfort for long-term pleasure

Why doubt generally feels better than growth when we’re in this place of self-sabotage

How to manage expectations and create acceptance before you've achieved your goals

Questions to ask yourself to get really curious about your relationship with self-sabotage

Special Offer:

Download my free guide to help change that habit that you just can't seem to quit

Follow Me:

Visit my website: ceceliabaummandryk.com

Connect on Instagram: @ceceliabmandryk

https://happiness-created.captivate.fm

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/80d16792-af11-4c5d-8b27-afb9ff5c159a/Ut9i_8GIp-xfVBN-HJrl3NwA.jpg"/>
Cecelia Mandryk

<itunes:duration>20:38</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:episode>25</itunes:episode><itunes:summary>Self-sabotage is when people do or don't do things that block their success and prevent them from accomplishing their goals. In this episode, I share an exercise to support you in creating more space in your life for exploration. I illustrate how I recently used this practice after a mistake that I made and highlight how my reaction today is radically different from what it was before.

Instead of getting bogged down by the limiting beliefs that our brain tells us, we can jump into solution-based thinking instead. This allows us to learn from our mistakes in a loving way and create sustainable change. Listen in to learn more about how you can retrain your default response for when things don’t go as planned.

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform.

Topics Covered:

Checking in with your nervous system and cognitive responses after you make a mistake

Tangible ways to create more safety for yourself

How certain childhood beliefs about mistakes subconsciously show up in adulthood

Learning from your actions from a place of curiosity instead of judgment

Special Offer:

Jumpstart your awareness and join me for my free Feel Your Feelings training: ceceliabaummandryk.com/freetraining

Follow Me:

Visit my website: ceceliabaummandryk.com

Connect on Instagram: @ceceliabmandryk

https://happiness-created.captivate.fm

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/80d16792-af11-4c5d-8b27-afb9ff5c159a/Ut9i_8GIp-xfVBN-HJrl3NwA.jpg"/>
Cecelia Mandryk

<itunes:duration>14:41</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:episode>17</itunes:episode><itunes:summary>Mistakes are an integral part of the human experience, but we tend to have a low tolerance for them. The first one is engaging with thoughts and beliefs that don't serve you and the second one is being unwilling to feel certain feelings. In this episode, I illustrate examples of how these concepts can show up in your life and explain how you can start to shift out of the narratives that are keeping you stuck.

For many of us, our inner-dialogue can convince us of anything. Even though our thoughts might not be our reality, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. When our thoughts and beliefs feel like facts, they become so ingrained that it becomes difficult to question them. I break down two examples of this concept that are really prevalent in our society and share how we can start to reframe those thought patterns.

The other thing that I’ve noticed a lot of my clients struggle with is avoiding the hard-to-feel feelings and creating buffers around them. Everyone has the ability to intentionally create safety in their nervous system and body, but it can be an uncomfortable experience. It requires a level of self-awareness and a willingness to work through limiting beliefs.

Hopefully with the examples that I share in this episode, you can see that it’s entirely possible and worth the effort.

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform.

Topics Covered:

Imagining what would happen in your life if your thought and beliefs aligned with how you wanted to feel

Why action plans don't work (and what to do instead)

What happens when you start to actually feel your feelings

Why shaming and judging yourself doesn’t work for creating sustainable change in your life

Tools to increase your ability to feel discomfort and process feelings

Resources Mentioned:

Interested in small group coaching? The truth is that emotions are just a series of physical sensations, and if you commit to showing up and being okay with the learning curve, bringing on hard-to-feel emotions won’t be nearly as intimidating as you make it out to be. But, the reality is that we’re entirely responsible for neutralizing our thoughts and reactions. On today’s episode, I dive into where happiness and other emotional states come from and share ways to practice non-judgmental curiosity about your feelings.

Brain chemistry and a propensity to happiness play a large role in our emotions, but it’s just one piece of a very large puzzle. Learning how to step into what’s available for your emotional wellbeing is a challenging, yet extremely empowering process. We usually attribute our feelings to our environment, but what’s really happening is that we have a thought about people or their actions, which creates a feeling in our body that our brain translates to mean something.

For example, when someone cuts you in line at the supermarket, you’ve been conditioned to think that cutting the line is wrong, so it feels like a personal attack. Your thoughts jump to feeling frustrated, provoked, and annoyed. The good news is, there’s a lot of work that can be done to neutralize those thoughts and own your emotions. Listen in to learn more about that process and how to get started on your self-study journey.

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or on your favorite podcast platform.

Topics Covered:

Debunking the myth that outside circumstances determine how you feel

Recognizing when and why you’re trying to control other people and the world around you

Being honest with yourself about the thoughts and beliefs that you hold around people’s behaviors

Undoing the subconscious training that we have around imposter syndrome and people-pleasing tendencies

Questions to help guide your reflections around your emotions and reactions

Special Offer:

Jumpstart your awareness and join me for my free Feel Your Feelings training: ceceliabaummandryk.com/freetraining

Follow Me:

Visit my website: ceceliabaummandryk.com

Connect on Instagram: @ceceliabmandryk

https://ceceliabaummandryk.com/

<itunes:image href="https://artwork.captivate.fm/80d16792-af11-4c5d-8b27-afb9ff5c159a/Ut9i_8GIp-xfVBN-HJrl3NwA.jpg"/>
Cecelia Mandryk

<itunes:duration>14:30</itunes:duration><itunes:explicit>no</itunes:explicit><itunes:episodeType>full</itunes:episodeType><itunes:episode>2</itunes:episode><itunes:summary>Many of us have been taught to surrender our power over how we feel to other people and what's happening in the world around us.
