Karen Bulinski Mathison was born in Buffalo, New York, and has spent her life learning that grief doesn't follow a timeline—it shatters one.

She lost her husband to a brain aneurysm. She lost her father to cancer on Christmas, her 50th birthday. She lost the last man she loved, suddenly and without warning. She's navigated pet loss, miscarriage, secondary grief, and the isolation that comes when the world moves on but you're still standing in the wreckage.

But loss also taught her something else: that raw, authentic grief work transforms everything.

Karen holds a Master's Degree in Mental Health & Wellness with an emphasis in Grief & Bereavement from Grand Canyon University. She's a Certified Death Doula through IAP Career College, a Certified Life Coach, and holds certifications in Art Therapy Coaching and Emotional Trauma First Aid.

She combines clinical expertise with lived experience—she's studied grief academically and survived it personally. That combination is rare. That combination is powerful.

In 2024, Karen founded The Naked Grief, a comprehensive grief support platform built on a simple truth: grief support should be raw, authentic, accessible, and unapologetic.

The Naked Grief's dark, heavy logo isn't accidental. It represents that initial impact—the moment loss rocks hard and cuts like glass. But the communities within are brighter and lighter because support changes the shape of your grief backpack, making it less heavy to carry. It doesn't erase the weight. It makes it bearable.

Karen is most proud of three things:

The RAW Experience Podcast — Co-hosted with spiritual healer Melissa Bishop, this podcast dissects Friends episodes to identify disenfranchised grief and demonstrate how unaddressed life challenges create a spiral effect. It's grief education disguised as entertainment, reaching people who wouldn't otherwise seek help.
The Grief Garden Series — A collection of short stories and creative tools that help people identify the array of emotions experienced during grief as companions walking with us on our healing journey. Characters like Hope, Love, Faith, Resilience, and Pain become guides through loss.
Global Grief Awareness — Her mission to make discussing grief a common dialogue that occurs before loss, not just after. Prevention through conversation. Preparation through community.

Karen is passionate about one thing: disenfranchised grief—all the losses that come with or separate from the death of a person. The lost promotion due to grief brain. The warning at work because productivity suffered. The trauma and isolation that happens when employers and society don't recognize grief as legitimate.

She believes that mental health support in the workplace isn't a luxury—it's a retention strategy, a productivity multiplier, and a basic act of humanity. When people feel seen and supported through life's hardest moments, they don't just survive. They transform.

Karen was born in Buffalo, New York, and plans to eventually join her family in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Lewiston, Niagara County—a full-circle return to her roots and a reminder that grief, legacy, and connection are all intertwined.

Graham Maxey is a Licensed Professional Counselor in Texas and Pennsylvania and the Clinical Director for the Center for Grief and Traumatic Loss in Libertyville, Illinois. He holds a B.A and an M.Div. degree from Texas Christian University, and an M.A. in Behavioral Science from the University of Houston/Clear Lake. Part of his job as Clinical Director is to train licensed mental health workers in the Induced After Death Communication therapy technique discovered by Dr. Allan Botkin, Psy.D. He lives in Arlington, Texas with his wife, Shannon, who is a certified grief counselor and evidential psychic medium.

Mr. Maxey has trained therapists in the IADC method all over the United States and Canada, as well as in Turin, Italy at the University of Turin, and in Germany at the Milton Erickson Institute in Heidelburg.

Graham was invited to produce the program for Humana Medicare insurance on healthy grieving presented in all 39 Humana Neighborhood Learning Centers across the United States and trained all Learning Center directors in its presentation. He was the leader for Humana’s associate grief support group from 2015-2021. As part of the Humana Clinical Education series for licensed mental health associates Mr. Maxey presented on the topic of Counseling Clients Who Have Had Spiritually Transformative Experiences.

Graham has been a speaker at the Association for Spiritual, Ethical, and Religious Values in Counseling conference in 2017, and his address to the International Association for Near-Death Studies in 2015 is still available on YouTube. He co-authored Case Studies in Induced After Death Communication Therapy for the journal Grief Matters: The Australian Journal of Grief and Bereavement. Grief Matters. He is the featured IADC therapist in the documentary film by Stephen Berkley, Life with Ghosts: The Healing Power of After-Death Communication, scheduled to be aired on PBS.

He has written two books awaiting publication: Seasons of the Soul: The Repeating Cycle of Psychospiritual Development, and Five Great Things Anyone Can Get from Listening to the Dead—the Mental Health of After Death Communication.

Holly Gainsboro, founder of Golden Heart Grief Support & Education, is a Grief Support Specialist/Coach & Grief Educator. Holly’s late husband, Steven, died in December 2010, from glioblastoma. Holly began her work in the grief field more than a decade ago, earning her first certification as a Grief Recovery Specialist. She continued her studies and received her certification as a Grief Educator with world renowned grief expert, David Kessler, as well as being certified as a Grief Support Specialist from the University of Wisconsin. Holly believes that learning never stops and recently completed another training and certification as a Grief & Loss Provider with Claire Bidwell Smith. Holly recognizes that grievers don’t need to be fixed, they need to be heard, seen, and supported. Holly’s passion/purpose is to be present for those who have experienced losses by guiding them through the feelings of grief and leading them to a place of peace and hope while honoring their relationships/experiences.

Holly says," I normalize grief and invite growth and learning throughout the journey using a heart centered, and holistic approach.”

Emilio Parga is the Founder and Executive Director of The Solace Tree, a non-profit grief and loss center for children, teens, adults, and families in Reno, Nevada. He is the author of No Child Should Grieve Alone and many other journals and books for children, teens, and adults experiencing death and loss.

Celebrating 23 Years at The Solace Tree, Emilio has co-founded numerous grief centers in Nevada, and one in New York after September 11, 2001. He teaches courses at the University Nevada, Reno and the Nevada School of Medicine on death, dying and loss, and is frequently consulted to support in the aftermath of traumatic events such as school shootings and mass shootings locally and nationally. Emilio works with athletes at the high school and university level when a loved one or teammate has died. He also facilitates national Zoom Meetings for adults who have experienced suicide and first responders through the Nevada Donor Network.

About Reshma:

I’m a mom, a widow, and someone who knows the heart-wrenching pain of unexpected loss. In 2022, my husband died by suicide. In an instant, I became a solo parent responsible for 3 grieving children. This would be my hardest role yet.

Our loss was unfathomable and I understand firsthand the deep questions, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming struggle to keep going. But through my journey, I’ve discovered that healing is possible, even when it feels impossible, and I’m here to help you find your way through it.

In the midst of uncertainty, I turned to what I already knew: mindfulness. My children and I began practicing mindfulness many years ago, before my husband passed away, but I didn’t fully understand its depth until I needed it the most. It’s helped me stay grounded through the chaos of grief, find light in times of darkness, and build resilience as I faced parenting and life’s demands. Mindfulness has allowed me to honor my emotions, support my children through their own struggles, and rediscover moments of joy during the hardest times.

In addition to my personal experience with grief, healing, and mindful parenting, I hold a Master’s degree in Public Health and am a yoga teacher— trauma-informed and kid-certified. These qualifications, combined with my lived experiences, guide my work and allow me to offer practical tools to help you feel more present, resilient, and connected on your journey. Welcome Home!

Wendela Whitcomb Marsh is an award-winning author, sought-after speaker, and autism expert specializing in late-diagnosed autism. Gwen Mysiak is on a very personal journey. She was doing communications for Public Broadcasting in Buffalo and was not looking for a career change. But in 2010, her cousin’s son received a terminal cancer diagnosis when he was 13. That’s when everything changed for her.

Gwen Connected with Brian Moorman, the former Bills Punter, who started P.U.N.T. Pediatric Cancer Collaborative. P.U.N.T. stands for perseverance, understanding, need, and teamwork.

“I took over as Executive Director in 2012,” Mysiak said. “The one thing I learned when I started, is that there is a total lack of support for the bereaved population. Within a year I established a bereavement retreat here in Western New York. It’s modeled after the program that former New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin’s Foundation was running. I brought it to Buffalo and for ten years we’ve been bringing families together for a Bereavement Retreat in Ellicottville.”

In addition, P.U.N.T provides financial, emotional and other support to families facing a pediatric cancer diagnosis.

“It’s hard enough to think about a child having cancer, let alone not making it. But it’s those families who need us the most. Their hope is gone, their child is gone, their finances are decimated and they’re trying to figure out how to breathe again.”

Gwen's passion to help those who are bereaved has now expanded to help the whole Western New York area through the WNY Compassion Connection.

The mission of WNY Compassion Connection is to help grieving children and families navigate their journey to healing and resilience through the power of peer support and grief literacy within a safe, caring environment and through building up a grief sensitive community.

Her book, My Unexpected Journey: Reflections After Losing My Son to Suicide, chronicles the eighteen months following the devastating loss of her own beloved son, Max to suicide after his long battle with mental illness. She offers grief support to bereaved parents through online groups and community talks that seek to build greater understanding of mental illness, suicide, loss and grief.

Erin lives part-time in both Pennsylvania and Florida with her husband, Bill and Max’s former dog, Emmylou. Their son, Sam, and his wife, Julia, reside in Pa. My Unexpected Journey is her first book.

LeAnn Hull was born and raised in Phoenix Arizona where she married Clay Hull and together raised four children. While raising their kids, she and Clay owned and operated a construction company named Arizona Window Center for 30 years. Being self-employed allowed them the time to invest in their children’s lives and in the community in which they lived.

After the tragic loss of her 16-year-old son in 2012, Andy to suicide, LeAnn founded a non-profit organization called Andy Hull’s Sunshine Foundation. The mission of this group is to raise awareness of the high rate of suicide while providing coping skills to deal with life’s challenges. With a “You Matter!” approach, we offer education, support and encouragement which will lead to lives being saved.

LeAnn continues to impact the lives of people all over the world through her “What’s In Your Tool Box?” talk which teaches healthy coping skills using her first hand experience, her certification as a Grief Educator and Mental Health First Aid.

In 2019, LeAnn published her book titled, “How To Live When You Want To Die”, which details her journey of survival and trauma leading to a place of hope and healing. In addition, she writes for several monthly newsletters mentoring parents who have lost children in hopes of helping them achieve healing.

In 2014 and 2019, LeAnn worked on legislation in Arizona which led to two new laws, signed by the current Governors, mandating suicide education in all the school districts. She continues to be interviewed by various news and radio stations, as a resource on suicide prevention and mental health.

LeAnn’s background in construction, as well as her OSHA certifications, lends itself to incorporating her “Toolbox’ talk into the safety programs, workshops and talks.

Currently, LeAnn is working on a new book, recording podcasts, writing blogs and is a sought-after trainer for schools and businesses all over the Country.

Carla Kaufman Sloan is an Emmy winning writer and television producer with three decades of experience in creating, writing, and developing TV shows.

The mother of two sons, Carla co-established Caleb and Calder Sloan’s Awesome Foundation (ccawesomefoundation.org) with her husband, Chris, after the tragic death of their seven year old. The accident occurred in their home swimming pool due to faulty high-voltage lighting.

Reeling in shock and grief, they turned their focus to helping other children in need, prioritizing kids who have suffered the loss of a parent or sibling. The foundation has grown significantly since 2015 to serve hundreds of thousands of people through a Legacy fund for children to attend Experience Camps, a week long summer program for children suffering grief, massive hurricane relief campaigns, providing school supplies for kids all over America and personal aid to parents who have suffered the loss of a child.

Most recently Carla finished writing a book about grief and her new found belief in continued consciousness and experiences with the other side. I graduated from nursing school in 2015, and began my career as a nurse on a medical/surgical unit. As a nurse, I often saw suffering where there need not be. As medical professionals, our goal is to do everything possible to keep someone alive. What happens when that is no longer possible? Everyone panics and we allow fear to take over, instead of seeing death as a natural human process. Being born means we all must die.

I ignored my calling then, however I would take care of patients on hospice and would sneak into their rooms and remind them they were on their way to meet loved ones they had lost.

Covid came, which ultimately ended my career in the hospital and I switched to homecare nursing. It was there, I met a patient who will forever be very dear to my heart. He was dying of terminal cancer. He was young and he did not want to leave his wife of 17 years and 12 year old son. I naturally felt pulled to guide him through the dying process. I felt like this is my soul’s work. After he passed I knew that this is why I am here.

I completed the INELDA death doula course in November 2023 to become a trained Death Doula. I have since worked with clients and their families to help ease the intense suffering that comes during death. I believe, death is not a medical event, it is a human event meant to be shared with those closest to us and the higher power calling us home. It is in the sacred space created in the end that allows families to feel comfortable discussing their hopes, fears, and wished in a way that creates intention and closure while incorporating wellness, peace, and beauty. I work with individuals and their families as a journey guide through advance care planning, resources, and support as well as a spiritual guide. I help them navigate through hospice, vigil, and the grieving process with compassion, love, support and understanding that this is a sacred time.

Based on interviews with 130 parents around the world, the book was created by four ‘shining light’ parents who have each had children cross over, and published by Mark Pitstick MA DC,1 who has a long-term interest in afterlife research.

A child’s passing is said to be the most difficult of all losses, and yet these 130 ‘shining light parents have each managed to infuse their lives with meaning, love, joy and grace.

Liz Wolczko is a bereaved mom, sibling and daughter. Her journey with grief began in 1974 with the death of her oldest brother John. Liz’s 26-year-old daughter and only child, Joana, died in 2008, the same year she lost her sister-in-law and Mother.

Liz and her mother Sally Ketchum, were pioneers in the Hospice movement, creating the first Hospice in Maryland in 1979, that was also the third in the US. Liz didn’t stop there – she was part of creating one of the first Hospices in Southern New Hampshire. As a Hospice Volunteer Coordinator, she recruited and trained volunteers to sit with dying patients.

Shortly after her daughter Joana’s death, Liz became a member of Compassionate Friends, a National non-profit support group for bereaved parents, siblings and grandparents. After benefiting as a member, she became a Facilitator for both the Nashua and Manchester, NH Chapters and Treasurer for the Manadnock Chapter in Peterborough, NH.

In 2023, Compassionate Friends afforded Liz the opportunity become a Grief Educator, certified by world-renowned Grief Expert, David Kessler. Liz went on to study with Emmy-nominated, Public Speaking Coach Rachel Hanfling in her signature program, “Own the Power of Your Story”.

Next up for Liz – turning our grief-denying society into a grief-accepting society by creating a program for high school and college students.

Hailing from a small steel town outside of Buffalo, DeeAnn was raised in a musical family, learning standards that would eventually become part of her repertoire. In addition to the smooth vocal stylings of her father Frank, she was inspired early on by Buffalo Blue Note legend, DoDo Green and attended multiple jazz jams. During her early days as a pop/rock singer, she won Best Female Vocalist at the Buffalo Music Awards two years in a row. Her later success as a country artist earned her placements on numerous radio CD compilations, resulting in airplay throughout the U.S and Europe. When she returned to music as a jazz-blues singer in the mid-2010’s, she won Best Female Blues Vocalist at the Buffalo Night Life Music Awards and her 2019 EP Stay Here won Best Jazz CD from JazzBuffalo.org.

The singer soon had a painful story to tell. The tragedy of losing her 23-year-old son William Michael Tompkins to a motorcycle accident, after she and Odel had completed most of the tracks of “It’s My Time’ threw DeeAnn’s life into a tailspin and delayed the project indefinitely. Her original concept was to record an album of old standards, and the two had 90 percent of them.

When DeeAnn came back to the project she added a few new, very personal songs, starting with a heartrending, gospel-influenced version of “You Are My Sunshine”, a song she sang to William to put him to sleep when he was a child. Odel’s sensitive yet rousing and inspirational production features members of the Buffalo Philharmonic String Quartet (Roman Mekhulnov).

A little about Mark...

On November 3rd, 2000, my life changed forever when I got the phone call informing me that my son Markus had been in a serious car accident, and we needed to get to the hospital ASAP.

I was 41 years old and owned a successful business in general aviation. I am a licensed aircraft mechanic with inspection authorization by the FAA. I have ratings and certificates to operate multi engine aircraft in instrument conditions. I have worked in research and development for various projects in aviation and have also assisted in the investigations of several fatal aircraft accidents. Things must make sense to me on a scientific and practical level proven by facts and evidence.

I have spent a lot of time researching how any of the events following the phone call could make sense on any level. I still have questions however I have found a lot of scientific data and enough consistent circumstantial evidence.

Is it possible that us parents who have a child depart before us are given an opportunity to explore a fascinating though scary world where the real truth lies?

When Jennifer learned that her friend lost her son in a military training accident, she went from being grief-avoidant to becoming a grief educator, speaker and supporter. Through customized workshops, conferences and speaking engagements, Jennifer is on a mission to exchange judgement with empathy and compassion by educating individuals and organizations on the importance of grief and mental health awareness, suicide prevention and advocating for recovery friendly workplaces. She believes "normal” is a myth and consults with organizations to break the stigma and reduce the awkwardness and discomfort these topics present. She does this work in honor of Capt. Nicholas P. "Sloppy" Losapio USMC and the crew of Swift 11, and all who choose careers to keep our country and communities safe.

When she's not trying to normalize conversations around death and other forms of loss that cause grief, she serves the construction industry as a Vice President of Education and Workforce Development for the NH/VT chapter of a construction trade association. In this role, she facilitates leadership programs using the DISC Behavioral Assessment as a foundation.

Jennifer's credentials include a Master's Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages with a concentration in Life Skills and Career Planning, Certified Behavioral Analyst, Leadership Training and Development, Certified Grief Educator & Coach, Construction Suicide Prevention Trainer, and Mental Health First Aid Responder and Recovery-Friendly Workplace Advocate.

Jason Tuttle is a former stay-at-home parent and married father of 2 kids with multiple physical and cognitive disabilities. Jason lost his 15 year old special needs son 01/28/22. From that day, Jason decided that he wanted to help others while he grieved. So, he created “Letters To Zachary” as an open, raw, vulnerable way to be an example sharing his feelings as well as help others to see a glimpse into the male mind and how it grieves.

Tom & Jason have a blatant discussion about the unique aspects of having special needs children & dealing with the death of Zachary.

Jason also shares about the great way that he honors Zachary through his 'Letters to Zachary' , his passion to be an example to men in grief & other upcoming tremendous projects.

Kelly Daugherty, a seasoned social worker with over two decades in the clinical field, is a Fellow in Thanatology: the study of death, dying, and bereavement. Anchored in Malta, NY, she owns Greater Life Grief Counseling and the Center for Informed Grief, LLC. Her commitment to the domain of grief stems from her personal journey, which began with her mother's death from breast cancer during her teenage years. This significant loss led Kelly to volunteer with a Hospice Children's Bereavement program and set the foundation for her career. Every day, Kelly finds purpose in her grief by helping both individuals navigate the complexities of grief and professionals aiming to understand it better.

Determined to revolutionize how grief support is provided, Kelly offers a wealth of tools and insights to those grappling with the death of loved ones and to the professionals dedicated to helping them. The Center for Informed Grief aims to create a more grief-informed society by benefiting individuals, families, schools, and broader communities. The book discussed; Helping Fathers Heal - Grief, Hope, and our Search for Connection will be released on Tuesday April 30th. You can find it on Amazon. It will also be released in a Kindle version.
