Michael is a firm believer that there are no true “new beginnings.” Life is a journey where we are continually learning, evolving, growing and accumulating experiences in pursuit of a life that we think is meaningful and that we love living. 

Michael has come to believe this because he opened a floral design studio, nourish, in 2023 that is the culmination of many seemingly unrelated experiences. The truth is everything Michael has experienced in the past could have led him to a thousand different points, but he consciously evolved into a floral designer because he loves design, he loves flowers and nature, and he loves telling stories, and all of those things are part of his collective experience. 

Michael’s professional background is in product design and brand management—building products and communicating their unique attributes to customers. Over the years, he has studied Interior Space Planning, Ornamental Horticulture, Landscape Design and Floral Design. About Michael

Michael is a firm believer that there are no true “new beginnings.” Life is a journey where we are continually learning, evolving, growing and accumulating experiences in pursuit of a life that we think is meaningful and that we love living. 

Michael has come to believe this because he opened a floral design studio, nourish, in 2023 that is the culmination of many seemingly unrelated experiences. The truth is everything Michael has experienced in the past could have led him to a thousand different points, but he consciously evolved into a floral designer because he loves design, he loves flowers and nature, and he loves telling stories, and all of those things are part of his collective experience. 

Michael’s professional background is in product design and brand management—building products and communicating their unique attributes to customers. Over the years, he has studied Interior Space Planning, Ornamental Horticulture, Landscape Design and Floral Design. About Scott Newhan

Scott started his career a little over 30 years ago as a warehouse worker at Morena Tile on Morena Blvd. He worked hard and was able to work his way up through the ranks. In 2001, he started with Import Stone as an outside sales rep and worked his way up to GM of the San Diego location. In 2008, Cosentino bought Import Stone and he has been with Cosentino ever since. He ran the San Diego location until 2016, and was then promoted to the GM of the Anaheim HUB. He was able to grow the sales there and won GM of the year, commercials sales of the year, and many container sales contests. In June of 2023, he was promoted to Regional General Manager covering Anaheim/San Diego and Las Vegas. He has thoroughly enjoyed his over 15 years with Cosentino and plans to continue until retirement. 

For his hobbies, he enjoys off-roading in the desert. He is also an avid shooter, a landscape painter, and is now on his way to becoming a private pilot. 

About Jason Shephard

Jason first entered the construction industry as a freshman in high school working for his father’s company in Illinois. His father owned and operated a countertop fabrication and installation company, and Jason worked in the shop, learning to fabricate and install countertops. Later he learned digital/laser templating, CAD drawings/layouts, and CNC programming/operating. He got married in 2006 and in 2013, moved back to his wife's hometown to be near her family in North County San Diego. He started his first sales job for a fabrication company in Escondido, where he learned in-home sales and worked with designers to bring their clients’ kitchen and bath dreams to life. This introduced him to many San Diego designers. In early 2021, he made the move to Cosentino as part of the San Diego sales team. In this role, he represents the Cosentino brands–Silestone, Dekton, and Sensa granite–in the professional market. He works with and supplies architectural surfaces to designers, kitchen studios, fabricators, contractors, and other industry professionals for their clients and projects.

Lara Worm, co-founder, CEO, and self-described “Adventure Guide” of Bivouac Ciderworks, has never followed a traditional path. Lara is a native San Diegan raised in her family’s food and beverage business, however, she wandered “off trail” – as per usual – and went on to pursue a career as a homicide prosecutor in Washington, D.C. After a decade on the East Coast, Lara returned to San Diego and found herself back in the world of hospitality. As an ardent world traveler and adventurous foodie, Lara was first introduced to cider during stints living in Australia and England. This week I welcome my friend Lara Worm of Bivouac Ciderworks to the podcast for a conversation about community and design. Lara and I are currently collaborating on the design of “Bivouac 2.0,” or Bivouac Adventure Lodge, a beautiful gathering space for cider tasting–and much more–in the North Park neighborhood of San Diego. This episode (and future ones to come) will give you a look inside the design process in the hospitality space, from beginning to end. This project is a great example of how we as designers can help bring the dreams and visions of our clients to life through the addition of little, meaningful details. It is also an example of one of my collaborations with a female business owner, which carries a different vibe and flow. I can’t wait to share more about this project with you!

About Natasha

Natasha is a self-taught abstract artist based in Southern California. Influenced by her artistic upbringing and a desire to escape the corporate grind, she now passionately crafts bold and colorful abstract art as a full-time creative entrepreneur. Her work is inspired by the natural world and the universe’s patterns, resulting in contemporary paintings that combine abstract expressionism with scientific elements. Using fluid acrylics, alcohol and acrylic inks, sand, and epoxy resin, she creates multi-layered compositions rich in texture and depth. Her palette – featuring purple, green, blue, and gold – draws from her Asian Indian heritage and personal connections, symbolizing feminism, community, heritage, and wealth.

She enjoys thinking "outside of the box" while respecting the fundamentals of good design and especially has a passion for designing tile layouts because of the infinite possibilities. In 2020, Jessica finally decided to take action on her idea of an online marketplace for interior designers to buy and sell items that didn’t work for a job.  Finally in mid-2023, Trādfurnishings.com was launched. This week I welcome Jessica Phelps, the founder of Trād Furnishings, to the podcast to talk about sustainability, creativity, and responsible resourcing. Through Trād Furnishings, Jessica offers a great, sustainable solution to a problem most designers have at some point: leftover, unused materials from a job. Sometimes we order too much of something or it doesn’t work as we expected it to, but we aren’t able to return it. These items often sit for years, unused, or are discarded. So Jessica created Trād Furnishings to give these items a new life in another designer’s project.

About Joanna

Joanna Cutri, a Los Angeles native, has an extensive visual arts background that spans the globe. Her paintings are collected internationally, featured in exclusive design projects, and exhibited in various galleries. She works in various sizes ranging from small, intimate studies to over sized 6-7ft panels. Her complex, personal style combines various mixed mediums and collage elements, resulting in layers upon layers of color, texture and imagery. The recurring theme and signature style of her work is a monochromatic palette, translucent, ethereal layers and fluid, dreamlike shapes that evoke a sense of calm and peace. 

Joanna's exposure to different cultures and world travels have greatly impacted how she creates and approaches her own work. Joanna lived and worked in Bali, Indonesia, for 10 years. Her vision of life and art were deeply inspired by the rich, creative culture and religion of the Balinese people, as well as the exotic, surrounding nature in which she lived in. 

Joanna also lived in the South of France in Biarritz for a year and a half to complete her collection of the Zhang Jie Jia mountains in the Hunan province of central China for her artist in residency program with the Nock Art Foundation in Hong Kong in 2014. 

Joanna has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in southeast Asia, Australia, South Africa as well as in the US and in Europe. Joanna received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1998 after studying in Cortona, Italy. ​ 

She currently lives and works in Southern California after having lived in New York City for 3 years.

Her paintings are collected internationally, featured in exclusive design projects, and exhibited in various galleries. She works in various sizes ranging from small, intimate studies to over sized 6-7ft panels. Her complex, personal style combines various mixed mediums and collage elements, resulting in layers upon layers of color, texture and imagery. The recurring theme and signature style of her work is a monochromatic palette, translucent, ethereal layers and fluid, dreamlike shapes that evoke a sense of calm and peace. 

Joanna's exposure to different cultures and world travels have greatly impacted how she creates and approaches her own work. Joanna lived and worked in Bali, Indonesia, for 10 years. Her vision of life and art were deeply inspired by the rich, creative culture and religion of the Balinese people, as well as the exotic, surrounding nature in which she lived in. 

Joanna also lived in the South of France in Biarritz for a year and a half to complete her collection of the Zhang Jie Jia mountains in the Hunan province of central China for her artist in residency program with the Nock Art Foundation in Hong Kong in 2014. 

Joanna has had numerous solo and group exhibitions in southeast Asia, Australia, South Africa as well as in the US and in Europe. Joanna received her Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from the University of Georgia in 1998 after studying in Cortona, Italy. ​ 

She currently lives and works in Southern California after having lived in New York City for 3 years.

About Debbie

Working with Debbie, means you are collaborating with a passionate interior designer with over 20 years of experience. Debbie is best known for her strategic thinking, creativity, spatial layering, high level detailing, and advocacy for her clients and team members alike.

About JenMarie

JenMarie Landig, born in Orange, California, currently lives and works in Southern California where she roams from Los Angeles to San Diego and several cities in between. 

Landig has a multi-disciplinary artistic practice grounded in photography, writing, movement, performance, and community. Critical to her practice is a focus on style and design through moments of play and laughter, gut-checks and stillness, connection and curiosity. She tells stories using her face, her body, the collective body, and the built environment. These elements inform the lived and inherited histories underscoring her work. Additionally, her practice considers the intersection of visual planes and light in space. 

Landig’s training in dance began at a young age, and she began mindfulness training later as an adult, with various teachers and institutions, including: Afro Flow Yoga, Amor de Díos in Spain, Deborah Eden Tull, Fit & Bendy Anatomy Lab, La Tania, Linda Vega, Mizuho Sato, Quenia Ribero, Search Inside Yourself Leadership Institute, Tania Santiago, and UC San Francisco Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.

Landig’s practice also builds on her 20-year career in the private sector and international, philanthropic, and social justice nonprofits. She has held a number of roles that moved between social silos and institutional structures. Landig’s formal education includes a BA in Business Administration from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley and a Masters in Global Affairs from New York University. She has also worked at the United Nations and outside of the U.S. Her experiences as a traveler both around the world map, and in her own inner world, guide her practice and inform her manifold world view.

Landig is an emerging artist and has received a grant from Center for Cultural Innovation. Her work will be included in the solo exhibition Trust in My Frame at the Collateral Collective (COCO) in San Diego, CA (July 2023). Against their Real Estate agent's advice, Christina and Curtis bought a fixer with "good bones" 3 years into their unwed relationship. A 5 year renovation turned into 9 with the two realizing that 1,700 sq. ft. on nearly an acre of land was not the life they hoped for. They wanted a life of less that offered freedom to experience more. Letting it all go to live in a 425 sq. ft. Hillcrest treehouse made Curtis' recent project, Cayuca, an attainable and sustainable concept.

About Khalid Alkaaby

Alkaaby’s creative journey started early in his childhood. His natural talents for drawing and painting inspired him to begin his education in Fine Art. While attending University his work was shaped by the local Masters of his hometown. They saw his potential as a young artist and shared their wealth of knowledge and expertise with him.

Alkaaby’s beautiful life was uprooted in 2005 with a change in the political climate. Alkaaby chose to embark on the journey of a lifetime and to immigrate to the US. It is here in the US that Alkaaby experienced a sense of creative freedom that allowed his works to soar to higher levels.

Alkaaby’s figurative work celebrates the energy and beauty of the sitter, translated to the viewer by his expert eye. His abstract work takes a moment in time, his personal energy and fuses it to the canvas.

Each piece of Alkaaby’s work is a meditation, a vision prior to his brush touching the canvas.

Alkaaby’s work is inspired by love, grace and beauty that surrounds him. He currently resides in San Diego.

Anne Kellett, ASID is an independent interior designer with 47 years’ experience in the field of residential interior design. Anne earned her Bachelor’s degree in Textiles and Interior Design from the University of Connecticut in 1969 and her Master’s from Oregon State University in 1971. Her design career began in New England – Connecticut to Vermont to Maine – then travelled south to Williamsburg, Virginia – and now continues in Southern California.  

Anne is a Past President of the San Diego Chapter of ASID and is a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. She is retired from Design Institute of San Diego where she taught textiles and business practices. Anne was also the Career Development & Internship Advisor and the Faculty Advisor for the Student Chapter of ASID at Design Institute.

Anne’s former design firm, A Kinder Space, was known for creating safe, easy to use and beautiful spaces that strove to address the present and future needs of her clients. Anne’s prime goal is always to interpret those needs and desires in an aesthetically pleasing way...to make spaces work “for” them ….not “against” them…to create an environment in which they can live and work more positively and independently. Anne brings care, respect and empathy into the designer-client relationship. Providing innovation and excellence ….her work has established a reputation for interior spaces that function beautifully.

Kelsey Brookes is a former scientist who uses his background in biological and empirical methodology to create a new genre of art. His practice takes ideas and forms found in logic and natural systems (molecular and atomic structure, number sequences etc.) and creates art that blurs the boundaries between science and art. This methodology becomes the instrument used to create lively and colorful work that is both meticulously crafted and conceptually rigorous. His detailed paintings and sculptures find a balance between the normally opposing philosophies of subjectivity and objectivity, as well as concept and aesthetic. Diving into the discoveries of the physicist, mathematicians and chemist as only a scientist can then reducing and express that knowledge to the nonscientific world in the form of image and color as only an artist can.

Brookes has had solo exhibitions in La Jolla, Los Angeles, New York, Detroit, London and Berlin. His work was featured as the cover art for the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 2012 “I’m With You record and The Flaming Lips’ 2013 “Stone Roses” LP. KELSEY BROOKES: Psychedelic Space is the first monograph of the artist’s artwork and examines three years of work and four solo exhibitions. His work belongs in esteemed private collections, as well as the public permanent collections of the Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, and the Frederick R. Weisman Foundation.

Working in both oil and acrylic, Taylor Chapin's paintings examine advertising, branding, superficiality, and the construction of value under the lens of American neoliberal capitalism. Her work questions our mindless drive toward industrialized American consumerism, the contents of which fill and fetishize our interior and exterior spaces. She reimagines mundane consumer goods emphasizing their inherent banality while simultaneously enshrining them, questioning how value is manufactured and challenging the perceptions of what is real/unreal, valuable/valueless.

She is drawn to the allure of what lies underneath.  She drapes, wraps, and covers with various fabrics to transform once recognizable forms into abstracted shapes, semi-composed inklings of what lies below. It is this illusory quality of implied volume and depth that bemuses and betrays the two dimensional space of the stretched canvas, allowing the painted surface to become an additional layer of the facade.

Chapin was born and raised in San Diego, California. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute and recently graduated with a Master of Fine Arts at University of California San Diego. She lives and works in San Diego, California.

Originally from New York, Lily Robinson is an architect, interior designer, author, artist, and design educator living in San Diego, California. Lily is the current President of the American Society of Interior Designers, San Diego Chapter. She is an adjunct professor at San Diego Mesa College and has just completed her third textbook, Interior Design Research Methods, due out in 2023 published by Fairchild Books, a division of Bloomsbury Publishing in New York. She co-authored Research-Inspired Design (2010) and wrote Research-Based Programming for Interior Design released in February 2020. Since 2012, Lily is also a member of ANFA (Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture) and since its inception in 2020, a member of ACE (ANFA Center for Education), a group of architects and neuroscientists interested in promoting new ways of teaching and evaluating architecture by incorporating the findings of psychology, sociology, and biology into design for the built environment. In her professional practice, Lily specializes in residential remodels, additions, and ADUs (Accessory Dwelling Units) which incorporate California Residential Code, Research-Informed Design practices, and feng shui principles.

The San Diego Chapter President of the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), Lily Robinson, joins me this week to talk about the valuable educational and networking opportunities the association provides. Originally from New York, Lily Robinson is an architect, interior designer, author, artist, and design educator living in San Diego, California.
