Highwaytothemoon, winner of the Plate Trial, drew post 8 and could find himself in an important tactical position in a field without an obvious dedicated front-runner. Brachetto, the Grade 3 Marine winner, drew post 9 and is the second choice on the morning line at 5-1. Dixie Law, runner-up in the Woodbine Oaks, starts from post 5 at 10-1.

Earlier this week, Churchill Downs and the New York Racing Association announced that they would team to present a six-race series spanning from May to November with the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes serving as part of this new series for 3 year olds. The announcement brought to question to fate and state of the Preakness Stakes, which for long has been scrutinized for its close proximity to the Kentucky Derby on the racing calendar. Soon after Churchill Downs and NYRA announced the new series, Maryland governor Wes Moore announced that the Preakness Stakes would be moved to 22 days after the running of the Kentucky Derby in the hopes that the Derby runner would take a shot at the Triple Crown. But with this new series in the fold on the stakes schedule, the placement and status of the Preakness currently sits in jeopardy.

Randy Moss joins PTF to break down the happenings behind the scenes of the Triple Crown for the last few years. Randy, a longtime advocate for adjusting the timing of the races on the Triple Crown, goes over the feuds between tracks and organizations that have stymied any remedy to the Triple Crown, which itself has struggled as a series in recent years with the Kentucky Derby winner opting off the trail entirely over the last two years. This year's Hambletonian has gathered an intense three-pronged matchup inside of the 10-horse field with Ohio sensation Big Ranger earning morning-line favoritism at 2-1 following a 1:50 romp in his elimination for driver Tim Tetrick and trainer Anette Lorentzon. Cody met the foal in 2018 through Make-a-Wish, and the owners named the horse after Cody after seeing their connection. Cody traveled across the country to watch the horse run, drawing national attention.Cody saw Cody’s Wish win a Breeders’ Cup race at Keeneland in 2022 and was at Santa Anita in 2023 when the horse ended his career with a thrilling victory. The next day, on the flight home, Cody fell asleep on his mother’s shoulder and did not wake up. While his death caused immeasurable sadness, those close to him were comforted that he was there for his horse right to the end.This is a story of resilience, triumph, and love—of the inexplicable yet undeniable bond between a courageous boy and the champion racehorse he considered his best friend. Some horses have taken the test unburdened even in defeat, but trainers remain hesitant in the modern age to risk their runners in the Preakness.

So what has to change? Does the Triple Crown necessarily have to change? The Triple Crown in horse racing has always been an elusive and difficult prize but is that reason enough to maintain the current schedule which does not even excite trainers to send their prospects down the Triple Crown trail? The Triple Crown traditionally has been a five-week turnaround between the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, but would adding more time between those races encourage trainers to participate and help reignite energy for the spectacle, or is it all just bells and whistles? PTF and Randy Moss discuss the issues with the current state of the Triple Crown in horse racing and discuss what options exist around its current dysfunction.
