Boogie Night Blues with Andorra

Andorra is a tried and true Philly band who’s been around for a decade. They joined us hot off the release of their newest album, Boogie Night Blues, the debut of which they celebrated right here in Philly with a show at Milkboy earlier this month. While Boogie Night Blues isn't a total departure from Andorra's prior albums, fans of the band will definitely notice a little bit of a shift in sound, and Kevin and Jordan were happy to break down what led them to make this record the way they did in the first place.

Today's Left of the Dial guest is Dylan Gallimore, who Philly folks may be familiar with from his fantastic band Honeyjar (we’re big fans), but today he’s on the podcast to talk with us about his equally fantastic new project The Lower Aetna whose debut album Waiting For God to Turn on the Lights was released on November 4th. It's a really smart and thoughtful concept album about a family dealing with the fact that one of their members has become a deep believer in the QAnon conspiracy. Dylan shares his thoughtful perspective, taking us through the album's rotating points of view and what inspired him to begin writing it in the first place. And because–as two people from the best state in the country–they're legally required to, he and Andrea talk a bit about growing up in Jersey–specifically Dylan's idyllic upbringing in the straight-out-of-a-fairytale town of Medford Lakes.

Franz Nicolay has maybe the longest and most varied resume of any Left of the Dial guest. You likely know him best from his work with The Hold Steady and World/Inferno Friendship Society, and of course, his own solo work. He’s also a novelist, travel writer, journalist, professor, and just an all around brilliant and thoughtful person. This week, he joins Andrea and our on-call substitute co-host Doug Keller to talk about so many things, including the long and winding process of making an album, writing fake songs for books, the art of the bridge, the necessity of revision, crying over Randy Newman, and, of course, Stephen Sondheim.

He's also here to talk about his beautiful new album, New River, out today, (Nov 11th) on Don Giovanni Records (digital or vinyl).

Chico Romano is the new-ish project from Rob Romano, a Jersey-based musician who you might also know as the frontperson for Professor Caveman. You should already be familiar with Chico Romano, whose most recent single, the upbeat and effervescent “UR My Best Friend” we covered earlier this month. His upcoming EP Vol.5 is due out October 7th, and it’s as eclectic and inventive as anything you’ve heard from his previous project. Rob joins Andrea on Left of the Dial this week to share some of his own music as well as a handful of songs from musicians he’s connected with and to in a variety of ways.

Andrea's guest co-host is a dear member of the Left of the Dial cinematic universe: Doug Keller. Doug is the titular Doug Keller of Doug Keller and the Dubbed Subs. You also know Doug from his band Duke Maroon, which we’ve covered here on the podcast and over on the blog. Doug’s band Riverby played our first ever Left of the Dial live session, and his band The Tisburys played one shortly after that. The Tisburys are also responsible for the cover of The Replacements’ “Left of the Dial” that they recorded for us to use as our theme song. Their album Exile on Main Street is out September 16th, the same day they play WXPN's Xponential Fest. Today though, Katie is here to tell us about Sweet Juice Summer Fest, which is happening this Sunday, July 31st, here in Philly at Rigby Mansion.

Sweet Juice is a queer feminist musical festival full of women and nonbinary musicians. Forever Came Calling is a band from Twentynine Palms, California. Their iconic pop-punk album, Contender, turns 10 this year, and to mark that anniversary, they’re heading out on a headlining tour this summer, hitting just about every region in the US. We were so thrilled to talk with Joe Candelaria, the band's lead vocalist and songwriter, about getting back on the road after a two-year break, revisiting songs he wrote a decade ago, showing love to your influences, being gentle with your past self, and what your favorite Ninja Turtle says about your taste in pizza. This was a really fun episode with a very thoughtful, candid guest, and we're excited for y'all to hear it!

Long Neck with Lily Mastrodimos

New Jersey’s Long Neck has a new album, Soft Animal, due out the 21st of June. They announced the album today along with the release of its first single, the earthy and ethereal (yes, it somehow manages to be both, simultaneously) “Gardener.” The single features lush violins arranged and performed by Marlene Bellissimo with warm vocal harmonies from RN Taylor of Los Campesinos!

Long Neck’s Lily Mastrodimos joined us on the podcast today to talk about the album, its influences, and the tender experience of writing and recording “Gardener” in particular. Soft Animal is out June 21st on Plastic Miracles in the US and Specialist Subject in the UK. It's only taken us two and a half years, but we're finally doing our Replacements episode, and we've brought it one of our favorite people here at Left of the Dial–Tyler Asay of The Tisburys and Riverby–to help us out.

We're especially excited about this episode because a few weeks back, we had Tyler and the rest of the Tisburys in the studio to record a cover of The Replacements' "Left of the Dial," the song from which we, big surprise, take our show's title, and we get to share that with you today! We'll be using it as our theme song from now on, too!

Caleb left Andrea unsupervised so she decided to switch up the format and invited her brilliant friend Jay Jolles, who wanted to talk about the soundtrack to Hulu's limited series, The Dropout, which, according to Hulu, is an "unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong."

Jay is a PhD student in American Studies at The College of William and Mary. His work lives at the intersection of memory, catastrophe, music, and digital culture. In particular, he is interested in the ways that sound, noise, and music relate to and complicate social relationships, time, and space. Jay has written about Taylor Swift and masculinity, lo-fi beats and neoliberalism, and the cultural phenomenon known as ‘vibes’. He is currently at work on a project about platform and surveillance capitalism that takes as its focus the music-streaming service Spotify.

The record in question? Ten Hours, but First of October. Two musicians known for their YouTube channels - Rob Scallon and Andrew Huang - booked a studio for ten hours (hence the name), wrote and recorded a record from scratch. Oh, and they didn't tell the engineer until they started, which is hilarious.

Chris joins us this week to talk about shooting Half My Life in ten of his favorite DIY/independent venues all across the country, some of the songs he chose that make up the special's killer soundtrack, and the tour doc that inspired Half My Life, Social Distortion and Youth Brigade's 1984 documentary, Another State of Mind.
