Making the decision to divorce wasn't easy--the biggest reason being my daughters. I knew it would devastate them. But I have held tight to my belief that by getting a divorce, I would then be able to show up as the woman and MOTHER that I wanted to be. I have always hoped that one day my girls would be able to see that.

I recently got asked why I had gotten divorced... and this person wasn't looking for the generic "we grew apart" answer that I often give. They wanted the DETAILS. Sorry to say, those little details won't be shared on a platform like this--at least right now. But, I WILL share the two big reasons why I (capital letter!) felt divorce was right and what I've had to learn and work on over the last couple of years.

I will preface this episode by saying that 99% of people who said these things to me meant well. I know their intentions were supportive... BUT they still hurt. Ep. 101-Be Open to "Bathroom Moments"

The funny thing about going through a divorce during a pandemic is that you have an over abundance of time to think.

And when I say over abundance of time I really mean an over abundance of time.

The nice thing about it is that I was able to spend a lot of time reflecting on my life and all of the choices that I’ve made that got me to this point. I can say that I have no regrets, because every decision that I have made for better or worse has gotten me to where I am now. The term “bathroom moment” comes from a truly magic moment that happened when I first met my best friend Jes… and yes, it truly was literally a single moment, and yes, it was in a bathroom.

This bathroom moment happened about 8 years ago. At the time, Jes and I were working for the same company and were attending a training together. We had a passing moment in the bathroom where she shared with me that she had made the decision to get a divorce, and I shared with her that I was having a challenging time in my marriage as well. I’m still not sure what prompted us both to share that with each other, but we did. After that day, we were friendly and acquaintances, but it wasn’t until we both left that company and started working with the same wine company that our relationship really grew. I was able to witness true mama bear energy and hustle with Jes and I've been able to have a front row seat at watching her completely transform her life post divorce. We didn’t speak about that bathroom moment for a few years, but it is a moment that we both definitely remember. Not to worry, she’s going to be a guest on here very soon, so you’ll get to hear more from her!

What’s amazing is that from that one moment, I gained a best friend and business partner. I wouldn’t have been able to manage the last 18 months without Jes. She’s responsible for so much of the good in my life. Through Jes I also met my other two best friends, Melaina and Lindy. The three of them (and their husbands, Mike, James, and Jason) have played such a huge role in my life. Particularly over the last couple of years. They are a trio that I can reach out to anytime day or night and they are there for me. You’ll be hearing a lot more about them, some of their interesting dating advice, and our misadventures in life, but the point is, is that I can trace back to that ONE single “bathroom moment” and how it transformed my life.

The funny thing about “bathroom moments'' is that You don’t see them coming, and you may not recognize them until days, weeks, months, even years later… but you have to be open to them. (and remember that they may not, in fact, happen in a bathroom). I hope you can all take some time to think back about what some of your bathroom moments are–I’d love to hear about them! It’s pretty amazing to look back at all that can unfold in your life from just one single moment, one chance encounter, one yes.

There is a great quote by Elaine Welteroth that says “there is so much wisdom locked up in the stories that women never tell” and I couldn’t agree more. At the time of this recording, about 18 months have passed since I made the decision to separate and work towards a divorce. I spent the first year of that time completely closed up… going through the motions. Being in the middle of a pandemic made it so easy to hide all of the feelings and emotions that were going on behind the forced smile I shared every day. I wanted to avoid the judgment that some people have surrounding divorce. I have a fantastic support system… but you guys… I was alone. It wasn’t until I actually found some courage and started talking about my life and my stories and experiences and all the things, that life really started to shift, and the fog I had been living in started to slowly clear.

Once I started opening up and being vulnerable, which can feel totally scary at first, I met some truly extraordinary women many of whom had also gone through divorce. It was as if the universe dropped these people in my path on purpose. Before that happened, I never understood the profound healing and learning and just positive energy and joy that comes from truly being vulnerable and connecting with each other over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine or seltzer or water or whatever your drink of choice is. There is such power in connecting and sharing our stories and that is what let’s sip together is all about.

I can promise there will be lots of laughter and there will probably be some tears. I really, at the end of the day, just hope that people can listen and find a little joy or maybe learn something or really someone will listen and just not feel alone.

I’m so excited to share some of my stories with you… some of the mistakes I’ve made (there have been many!), or some things I’ve learned about relationships, finances, taxes, parenting, gutters, dating, all of it! I’ll be introducing you to some of the best women I know… and all of this will happen around sipping our favorite drinks together.
