We discuss the uncompromising examination of Las Vegas, the way in which it represents the predatory and exploitative nature of the capitalist system, the dehumanization of sex workers, and try to understand the nature of the film's failure when it was released and why it has gone on to become an important piece of cultural criticism.

This episode is part two of our collaboration with Worker's Lit covering a book and the movie based on it, in this case the Stephen King novel by the same name. During the episode we discuss how much more capably Wright and Powell portray class consciousness than King, note how the movie improved on the book, and remained loyal to it by having a less than satisfying ending.

In a time long, long ago. Before Jedi and wookies or misunderstanding of parsecs, a man made a movie that was less of a film and more of a performance art piece. That director was George Lucas and that work was his directorial debut, THX 1138.

This week we are joined by friend of the show Amanda Joy Moon to discuss Lucas's first feature film, a profoundly different piece from anything he ever made from that point on. Released in 1971, THX 1138 stars Robert Duvall as the eponymous THX 1138, Donald Pleasence, Don Pedro Colley, Maggie McOmie and Ian Wolfe in a piece filmed more like a documentary than a feature film depicting life in a bleak dystopian world of work, drug induced compliance, outlawed sexual and physical interaction, and the complete absorption of religion by the state and capital. We discuss the metaphorical nature of the film, Amanda offers some incredible book recommendations, and we all condemn Lucas for going back and shoving CGI remakes into this film like he did to Star Wars.

Box Office Drop! 28 Days Later: The Bone Temple (2026)

Evan and Bill discuss the newest entry in the 28 Days Later series, "28 Years Later- The Bone Temple". Directed by Nia DaCosta and written by Alex Garland, the film stars Ralph Fiennes reprising his role as Dr. Ian Kelson and Alfie Williams as Spike, alongside newcomers Chi Lewis-Parry, Jack O'Connel, Erin Kellyman, Emma Laird, Sam Locke, and Mirren Mack among others.

Listeners beware because this episode is not free of spoilers, including a bombshell reveal at the last moment of the film. We discuss the evolution of zombie films, how this series is closer to Romero's vision of zombies than many fans give it credit for, and the way in which it reflects some harsh realities we all need to grapple with during these very difficult times.

We discuss the creation of wealth, the unity of the proletariat vs the schisms of the capitalists and their fundamental atomization, our guest points out more inconsistencies in the heist than one of us is comfortable with and we still come out unable to decide whether this is the greatest remake of all time or just one of the greatest remakes of all time.

The Battle of Algiers (1966)

This week we discuss one of the most important revolutionary films ever produced, "The Battle of Algiers." Directed by Gillo Pontecorvo and staring Jean Martin, Saadi Yacef, Brahim Hadjadj and Tommaso Neri, the film was released in 1966 and portrays the actions undertaken by rebels during the Algerian War against the French occupation of Algeria.

Released only four years after the Algerian War and the successful revolution and independence of Algeria from the French, and less than a decade after the events of the film itself, "The Battle of Algiers" was shot on location and is cast almost entirely with members of the Algerian community who were participants in the revolution or lived through it. We discuss the impact the film had on society at large, the way in which it starkly portrays the violence of revolution while perfectly capturing the inherent humanity of those of us who want to bring about a better future for all even though we must use the tools of violence to do so.

To discuss the film we are joined by Aaron, a good friend of one of our hosts, an activist, an organizer, and a man with more to say about this film than we could ever fit into a single episode.

Oldboy (2003)

This week we discuss the perfect film for everyone with a "World's Greatest Dad" mug tucked away in a cabinet, "Oldboy."

The original from South Korea, not the US remake.

Released in 2003, "Oldboy" was directed by Park Chan-wook and stars Choi Min-sik, Yoo Ji-tae and Kang Hye-jung. Widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time, and is considered a classic of modern South Korean Cinema. A masterpiece of revenge, the film tells the story of Oh Dae-su and his search for answers and justice following his imprisonment of 15 years in a mysterious private prison. We discuss what the film has to say about loss of community, the carceral system, and how capitalism creates a society that functions as a prison as surely as a cell door and barbed wire does.

Gareth Edwards Films: Godzilla (2014)

Number 2 in our Gareth Edward series!

Following his directorial debut with "Monsters" (see episode 210!) Edwards was brought on to breathe new life into the king of all monsters with Legendary Entertainment's "Godzilla!" Using the skills he honed with "Monsters," Edwards creates a tense monster movie starring the greatest monster of cinema history (according to one host at least). We discuss the claims that this film glorifies the US military, the contrast between Legednary's version of Godzilla versus Toho Studio's, one of us admits to crying in the movie theatre when Godzilla uses his atomic blast for the first time in the movie, and Ward challenges Edwards again to come on the show and tell us to our faces whether he is intentionally making anti imperialist films that portray the US and capitalism as the villain or if it is all just coincidence.

The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

We close out the holiday season with one of the all time greats, The Muppet Christmas Carol. Joining us is friend of the show Jackie; a librarian, Muppet aficionado, and the wife who fuels the revolutionary love of one of our hosts (it's the host that name drops his wife more than he does Marx or Lenin).

Widely recognized as one of the most faithful adaptations of the Dickens' classic, the film stars Michael Caine as Scrooge, Gonzo the Great as Charles Dickens, Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit, and Rizzo the Rat as himself and was the first Muppet film directed by Jim Henson's son Brian Henson following the death of his father. We discuss the accuracy of the movie, the influences that led Dickens to write the story in the first place, what the story has to say about alienation, and how two Marleys is better than one amongst other things.

Black Christmas (1975)

This week we are joined by a very special guest. Activist, organizer, horror aficionado, friend of the show, and the woman that holds up more than half the sky for one of our hosts, Joy, joins us to talk about the 1974 classic Black Christmas. Written by Roy Moore and directed by Bob Clark, this seminal horror classic starring Olivia Hussey and Margot Kidder is widely considered the earliest iteration of the slasher film and contains feminist themes that run counter to many of the films that would follow in its footsteps. We discuss the absolute failure of every man in the film, how police in Canada are apparently as incompetent as the police in the US, and how almost every slasher since Black Christmas has failed to live up to its standard of intelligent characters being failed by others as opposed to being too dumb to live.

Back to the Future: Full Trilogy

Fox and Christopher Lloyd as they travel back and forth through time to remedy the mistakes they both inadvertently cause for their own past and future selves.

We discuss what the films mean to us, how they may or may not be indicative of the culture of Reagan's America, and how the third movie is either a worthy entry to the franchise or a terrible tacked on addition to an otherwise perfect duology. Your mileage may vary on it, and it doesn't seem like any of us got 88 mph out of it.

A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night (2014) With Briana Cox

We are joined by author and screenwriter Briana Cox to talk about one of her favorite vampire movies, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night. Released in 2014, the film is a Farsi language horror film written and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, and stars Sheila Vand, Arash Marandi, Mozhan Marnò, Marshall Manesh, and Dominic Rains. The film was promoted as the "first Iranian vampire Western" and was partially funded through an Indigogo campaign.

We discuss the vampire as a symbol of both alienation and predation, the vampiric nature of capitalism itself, and attempts to break the cycles of predation and parasitism thrust upon us within this system and the bleakness of Bad City's "dead body ditch" being the only source of community within the film.

**With some renewed interest in Starship Troopers after some very awful X (formerly Twitter) threads, I wanted to rebroadcast this episode which gets into the heart of the matter: This movie is satire.**

Starship Troopers is one of, if not the greatest, the best spoof military films of all time. Paul Verhoeven is the GOAT when it comes to satire, especially military and police related. The mastermind behind Robocop brought the novel to life in a much better way. Verhoeven used the imagery of fascism, the third reich, the United States to show what ongoing militarism looks like if we keep going in that direction.

Based on the novel of the same name by Leon Uris, this film aimed to convince American Jewry to consider the State of Israel (at this point, only twelve years old) as a nation deserving their investment, sympathy, and loyalty.

This first rule of Fight Club is to tell people to listen to this episode about Fight Club. Fight Club is probably one of the most beloved cult classics of the last 20 years despite the fact that most get all the wrong messages from the film. It is an athem for alpha male dude bros, when the reality is that the film is far more nuanced. You will find men who do domesticate and take to jobs that require what previously had been deemed "feminine" roles. The movie, like the book, has a far more important message to impart: our society of over consumption and consumerism needs to to be stopped -- Capitalism cannot be the only way. The film, while plotting to destroy credit card companies, does not truly provide a real revolutionary movement, but instead it plants the seed. The idea. Demolition Man w/ Costume Whimsy and Serra Despair

Imagine a world where the only dining option is Taco Bell. In this world, there is also no violent crime. What's the catch you ask, well, a large portion of the population lives underground, the people top side are touch starved, repressed, and don't have any real ability to live a life of their own choosing. What world is this? It is that of Demolition Man. The 1993 action movie featuring Wesley Snipes, Sylvester Stallone, and Sandra Bullock was a movie that could only be made in the 90s. The plot, the "acting" and the ending are a site to be seen. That's not to say this movie still isn't a solid action movie for the era.

Forrest Gump w/ A Group of Comrades

Forrest Gump received high acclaim when it came out in 1994 and was honored with Best Picture at the Oscars too. While the movie hits on tons of those heart strings, nostalgia, and the things that Boomers love, it is also filled to the brim with light propaganda. What makes it so successful at this is how well the movie is constructed. Except for that weird bit where he becomes a runner, it has end-to-end historical references that help you relive that time in America. The problems include the dismissal of all Black achievements and a glorification of the Vietnam War which is widely accepted as an absolute travesty.

The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers w/ Hungry Rye

Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers came out when the United States was debating and then invading Iraq over supposed WMDs and it was this climate that influenced some of the aspects of this film. In addition, Vigo Mortensen was very much opposed to the US illegal invasion of Iraq and we love him for it. Hungry Rye is back to bring into focus the geopolitical aspects happening when this film came out and how important this film really is to the trilogy. Many find this movie slow or unapproachable given that much of the "action" happens near the end at Helms Deep. I hope that after listening to this episode, we will convince you that is far more than that.

Dawn of the Dead (1978) w/ Cole

The original George A Romero's Dawn of the Dead is part of his series of now six zombie films. The Night of the Living Dead was ground breaking for it's time and had far more to tell us than just being a zombie flick. Dawn of the Dead might have even more to tell us about our society of consumption and capitalism. If you go looking for information on Romero's politics, you'll mostly come up empty, but Dawn of the Dead is without a doubt a very political movie. Cole and I 1dissect this film with the aid of Guy Debord's 1967 book Society of the Spectacle. It's almost as if the movie was made to be brought to light by Debord's book.

The movie is one of John Hughes most well known movies outside of the ones with Molly Ringwald. She lends her comedic voice and knowledge of everything pop culture to this all time classic film.

No Country for Old Men w/Commie Trucker

No Country for Old Men was a departure from the Coen bros typical film, but not entirely. It still employed many of the same vehicles but it was built on Cormac McCarthy's neo-Western novel from 2005. The film went on to win Best Picture and the performances are spectacular.

The themes of longing for a bygone era, difficulty adjusting and see what lies ahead are among some of the themes I discuss with my guest Commie Trucker.

Interview with the Vampire w/ SmirkGently

The 1990's were filled with vampire classics, one of which may be Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles. For perhaps the first time on this show, I rewatched a movie and it didn't bring back that 90's nostalgia that I so dearly love. Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt both perform well, but it's hard to fully love it knowing the type of people they are today. But I digress...

Vampire lore has a long history, much of which stems from the classic novel 'Dracula.' However, the mythos goes back much further. There are many alagories and ways to interpret the vampire, but perhaps the most useful version is that of the blood-sucking capitalist. The mere idea of a person, who drains you of your blood until you are dead sounds remarkably similar to that of a Capitalist in our current system. An individual or corporation sucks the life out of its workers so that it remains moving, living, and immortal. Enjoy Smirk Gently's return to the show to discuss the film. DO you think it holds up?

Candyman w/The Jolly Leftist

The original Candyman film spawned numerous sequels, all of which fell flat and were not true to the original. Enter the new era of Candyman was ushered in by Director Nia DeCosta and writer Jordan Peele. The movie acts as a direct sequel to the OG Candyman film and does a great job of making it so you didn't need to see it to understand the new one. Horror films should be viewed through a leftist and marxist lense, and this film is no different. There are class, race and other issues that are glaring once you look past the gore and jump scares. I'm joined by three-peat guest Emlie - The Jolly Leftist - who lends are expert eye for Horror films.

Hackers brings out a lot of interesting themes about the world around us, corporate BS and much more.

For those who are big horror buffs, you probably know all about it. For those who aren't or just missed this 1974 gem, I'd encourage you to find it (it's free right now on many sites) and watch it.

Black Christmas was a genre-defining film that established the slasher/psychological thriller era even before the famed Halloween by John Carpenter. You'll find themes rarely found in horror movies as well as the first use of "The call is coming from inside the house" in a horror film.

Pleasantville stars Toby Maguire, Reese Witherspoon, William H Macy and Joan Allen. People probably remember it best for the stark difference from black and white movie into color. The movie evokes a lot of strong symbolism, whether director Gary Ross meant it or not.

Once Upon a Time in the West: They call them "millions"

Sergio Leone revitalized the western genre with banger after banger in the 1960s and 70s. Clint Eastwood was often his muse, though not in this film. With an incredible cast, Leone brings to the surface the dark underbelly of the "old west." As an Italian filmmaker, Leone was somewhat of an outsider in his perception of the North American western expansion. Along with that expansion was the brutal exploitation of black, brown, and indigenous people. US Government and capital interests ruled with an iron fist and the two tracks of the railway enabled the expansion.
If you're not a fan of westerns, this one will change your mind.

The Truman Show: There's really nothing left to explore

In 1998, Jim Carrey was in the midst of his peak comedic film era and yet he opted to join on The Truman Show, a film far from funny. At that time, we thought of Carrey as Ace Ventura or Lloyd Christmas and not as the sad sack that was Truman Burbank who, unbeknownst to him, was being broadcast to billions of people every second of the day.

I talk to Zoo about the implications of this depressing "comedy." The Truman Show is a reminder of the commercialization that was seen to this day. Everything is for sale, everything is a jammed pack full of advertisements and we may have lost some of our own identities in the process.

The Batman: All Cops includes Batman

While there are very few superhero films that make political statements, we do get about half a movie of solid undertones. As I discuss with my guest Matt Galvatron, Batman superfan, Matt Reeves does put together a marvelous movie but does fall short when it comes to fully flesh out the political message.
