One of the pioneers in the moto vlogging and custom bike scene, Zach Lucero’s name is known and heard by everyone in the riding community. Aside from being the guitarist in the local rock band Imago, he started Moto Builds Pilipinas, the country’s premier show for custom bikes. He also created Makina, a motorcycle vlogging channel on YouTube where he posts his reviews of different bikes.
Zach has almost thirty years of colorful riding experience complete with all kinds of different motorcycles and rode in the most exotic places around the world. From buying his first bike in secret to almost stopping cold turkey as requested by his then-fiancee, Zach has a lot of stories to tell. He had driven in the soft sands of the Sahara desert in Morroco, in the cold snow in the high-altitude Himalayas, and the picturesque views of South Africa. He even rode a 40 million Peso street bike of Spanish Grand Prix rider Mark Marquez!

While he currently slows down with the arrival of his son, Rocket, he still enjoys riding, albeit casual and laidback style. He believes life is short, and we all need to appreciate what life has to offer, travel more, and meet people.

Exceptional Highlights:

Riding is meant to be enjoyed. If you want to test your bike’s speed, go on the track.
Whenever you ride, consider the people in your family or friends who are at home waiting for you to return safely.
Always ride responsibly. You owe it to yourself and the rest of the motorists sharing the road with you.

Show Highlights:

How did you start doing videos on motorcycles?

02:59 Zach

In 2012, we got an offer to do an all internet radio show with video, called the Radio Republic, to promote local music. It supported many local artists and went on for about five years. In the last two years of Radio Republic, I wanted to fuse music and motorcycles. And Moto Builds Pilipinas was born. And Makina, my review channel for motorcycles, came in to offer manufacturers a place where I can promote them as long as they support Moto Builds Pilipinas.

What is it about riding that attracts you?

10:14 Zach

My love for riding started with the BMX bike. That was the thrill—my first actual pedal and on two wheels. I just kept getting amazed. And for me, riding is a visceral thing. You’re out there, and the wind’s in your face. Cliché as it may sound, it's your connection to everything that gets you hooked to riding.

Another thing is that it’s easier and more attainable to get a top-of-the-line bike versus a top-of-the-line sports car. With sports cars, they can go all the way up to 200 million. But with bikes, you already get a handful of good ones at 2 million.

What has riding taught you in life?

29:25 Zach

One, falling down hurts. And two, life is really short. If you don’t go out there and seize what you can, life is just going to fly you by. I tend to appreciate a lot of what the world offers because of bikes. When you’re on it, you meet new people, eat different things, and you get to travel. So for me, just go out there and do it.

Everything is under your control, and you are the master of what happens next.”
Riding around the city on her Husqvarna Svartpilen 401, it’s surprising for many people to find a lady under the helmet and in complete control of her bike. That lady is Erika Fernandez. Listening and bobbing her head to her feel-good disco songs, Erika likes to ride cool and doesn’t pay attention to how people react when they see her riding.
With almost ten years of experience, Erika has definitely become one of the most iconic female riders in the country. Riding gives Erika the illusion of liberation. She loves the empowering feeling of being in complete control of her bike, having no borders around her, feeling the wind or heat on her face, and hearing the sounds from all around.

Erika is the kind of person who doesn’t listen when other people try to limit her. And if there’s one thing that riding has taught her in life, it’s knowing her limits. She had a few close calls in her earlier years of biking. But for her, she had to experience those things and learn from them. And now she’s become a better rider because of them.

Listen to the full episode to hear more of Erika’s bike stories, adventures, and advice to those new to riding. Don’t forget to like this episode and leave a review!

Exceptional Highlights:

Ride your bike at a speed that you can control.
If you’re just starting to ride, YouTube videos are good for learning the controls. But YouTube will not teach you how to ride correctly the way an experienced rider and coach would be able to.
When riding motorcycles starts to become dangerous and unhealthy, that’s when you have to hit the alarm, stop, and have self-control.

Show Highlights:

What’s your most epic ride?

07:32 Erika

The one trip that I enjoyed the most was my trip to Porac, Pampanga, where we rode in the lahar. We were eight girls, with some of us on four-by-fours and some on their bikes. And when we got tired, we just switched out the bikes. It was a very convenient, spoiled way of dirt biking.

Was there ever a time that you thought of slowing down and selling your bikes?

09:22 Erika

Slowing down crosses my mind often. There’s always a risk factor that I consider every time I go on my bike. I check the weather first before I go out. I try to minimize the amount of risk I take. It’s a 50-50: how much do I enjoy and how much am I risking?

What’s your two cents on guys who are trying to buy a motorcycle but their girlfriends or wives won’t allow them?

13:12 Erika

I’m a believer in enjoying your toys. The misconception that guys who own many bikes, sports cars, skates, boards, and toys have a lot of girls is unfair. They are the ones earning money, and they should have the right to decide how to spend it.

What’s your advice to people who want to get into riding, whether male or female?

20:43 Erika

My advice is to try as many bikes as you possibly can before buying one. Assess the need for the motorcycle and what you’re going to use it for. The bike you take out on a leisure ride might not be the same as your commuter bike.

Take proper riding classes and learn the road rules, the correct way of handling your bike, and how to troubleshoot. Once you know how to ride, you’ll know the right bike for you.

While motorcycles are often heard for riding enthusiasts and adrenaline junkies, there are also the “practical riders” who ride them not for the need for speed but primarily for efficiency. And this is where Raymund Marasigan, an icon in the music industry, can be classified together with his one and only bike, the Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. He cuts his travel time by half with his motorcycle and doesn’t have to worry about parking anymore.

Motor riding started more recently for Raymund. With help from fellow musician rider friends, his first bike was custom-built to match his first custom-made guitar for his band, Sandwich. To ride motorcycles though, he needed to get his daughters’ approval first by taking riding lessons. And that he did and surprisingly enjoyed it with his daughters taking the classes too.

When he first got his Husky Svart 401, he thought it was the best - as agile as a small bike but can go long distances with no problem. He loves that the motorcycle looks vintage, just like his guitars.

Tune in to the full episode to know the rest of Raymund’s biking stories as he talks with his good friend, Sam YG. Don’t forget to like and leave a review!

Exceptional Highlights:

Riding a motorcycle is a life skill. You can take it with you wherever you are, and it comes in handy when you travel far and need to get around.
You can have any bike that you want and any porma but never compromise on safety. Always wear protective gear.
Before you go and squeeze yourself in small spaces between other motorists just to get to the front of the line, ask yourself if that few seconds is worth risking your safety.

Show Highlights:

Coming from zero experience with motorcycles, how hard is it to ride one?

12:47 Raymund

When I first started riding, the hardest part for me was following the rules. All the rules were new to me. I was used to riding my mountain bikes where most traffic rules don’t apply. The first few times I was riding, I was committing road crimes that annoyed most motorists.

After riding school, what came next for you?

15:39 Raymund

After riding school, I realized that I’m a practical rider and not someone who has the need for speed. My motorcycle is an important utility to me, especially going to my shows where usually I would add two hours to my travel time because of heavy traffic and finding parking. With riding, traveling is easy and faster.

What are your rider pet peeves?

25:07 Raymund

I don’t appreciate inconsiderate people who act like they own the road. When it comes to riding gear, I don’t like people who wear slippers and don’t wear helmets. It’s as though they’re just asking to get into an accident.

What has riding taught you in life?

32:38 Raymund

Riding has taught me patience. I’ve been reckless as a musician and on a bicycle. But with motorcycles, you can’t afford to be one. You need to practice patience, safety, and balance when riding.

What’s your advice to people who are planning to get into riding?

35:21 Raymund

Wear a helmet. Take riding lessons. You’ll learn a lot. Enroll with a friend because it’s more fun and challenging.

True to being an adventure-seeker, Drew has always wanted to try new things. His family and then-girlfriend Iya have always known this about him. So it didn’t come as a surprise when Drew told them about wanting to ride a motorcycle. And to give them peace of mind, he enrolled first in a safety riding school and learned his skills the right way.

Through moto riding, Drew finds his travels around the country more enjoyable and faster. Since time is his currency, Drew appreciates that he can leave late and come home early, even in heavy traffic. He even got Iya in on the whole motorcycle passion. In no time, Iya was also riding her own bike and moto commuting up to this day.

Undoubtedly one of Drew’s favorite and go-to bikes is his Husqvarna Vitpilen 401. When he first saw it, he thought it was such a looker ̶̵̵̶ an out-of-this-world bike. It was a no-brainer getting the Husky 401. For its price point, it has the right displacement, an easy shift sensor, and a decent weight. Best of all, it’s in his favorite color, gray. He loves his 401 so much that whenever first-timer rider friends ask for recommendations, he’d tell them to check out the Husqvarna Svartpilen or Vitpilen 401 because they’re perfect.

Listen to the full episode to hear the rest of Drew’s love affair with his Husky as he chats with Sam on bikes and life stories. If you’re enjoying this episode, please like and leave a review.

Exceptional Highlights:

The more you educate yourself with riding skills, the more confident you are when you ride and the more you enjoy.
Complement your ride with a navigation app that tells you about road closures, accidents, and other hazards ahead of time.
The agility of a motorcycle is not defined by how fast it can go on a straight line. Rather, it’s how quickly it can turn.

Show Highlights:

What is it about riding a motorcycle that gets you hooked?

09:42 Drew

Undoubtedly, you feel cool when you’re riding a motorcycle. You feel like a superhero wearing your helmet and jacket and with the wind against your face and body. And there’s nothing like the need for speed when you’re track riding, and you get to maximize the power of your bike. And for practical reasons, bikes are great for commuting.
Riding is also very therapeutic for me. I love my solo rides where I’m laser-focused. I don’t think of anything else. I don’t even listen to music. I just enjoy my ride, my view, and the scenery. Riding solo is zen.

What are your most epic rides?

13:51 Drew

Some of my epic rides were in Leyte with my friends, an 8-hour solo ride to eastern Aurora province, and when I tried all the different routes to Sagada.

What are your riding pet peeves?

17:17 Drew

My number one pet peeve has to be those who use their siren for road advantage even when they don't have an emergency. Whether you're a policeman or a VIP, please don't use your siren if it's not an emergency.
Another pet peeve are big bike riders that counterflow and have the audacity to ask the drivers in the right way to give way to them. This behavior is disappointing and gives other motorcycle drivers a bad name.

What has riding taught you in life?

25:28 Drew

For me, it’s the time that I save when I travel or commute using my motorcycle. The time spent more with my loved ones is gold.
Riding also honed my patience and maturity, especially when I’m on the road. Even when I’m tempted to go full speed, I don’t. It’s because of the experiences that honed me not just to be a better rider but also a better human being.

Seasoned rider and broadcaster Jay Taruc joins Sam YG for today’s episode of Moto Conversations. Being accustomed to bicycles, scooters, and old motorcycles growing up with his rider father and veteran broadcaster Joe Taruc, Jay is no stranger to bikes. His first bike, a scooter, was his learning bike when he started riding at age 14.
From his 150cc scooter, he made the jump to a 650cc cruiser motorcycle. More than riding for speed, Jay craved for farther and longer travels on his bike. And it was during the early 2000s that he got exposed to different genres of motorcycles through fellow rider friends he met along the way.

Fast forward to 2021, and Jay is a proud owner of eight bikes: three scooters and five motorcycles. His main bike is his Husqvarna Svartpilen 401. He calls it his “go-to” bike for doing shoots for his TV show, Ride PH. The Svartpilen is also his default bike for days when he doesn’t want to think anymore about which bike to use. It’s a glorified dirt bike yet light enough for smooth urban riding.

Tune in to the whole episode as Jay shares his riding history and adventures with host Sam YG. Don’t forget to like this episode and subscribe to the show for more Husqvarna bike talk.

Exceptional Highlights:

Always respect fellow riders, drivers, and pedestrians when hitting the streets. Everyone has a right to use the road.
Training is important. Learn as much as you can about riding and operating a motorcycle.
Equip yourself with proper riding gear. Make sure your helmet has the ICC sticker to certify that it passed national safety standards.

Show Highlights:

With three scooters and five motorcycles, how do you manage them all? Do you schedule regular rotation when using them?

12:53 Jay

I rotate them daily to make sure I use all of them regularly. By the weekend, I will use the bike that I have not used for the longest time for longer trips.
To maintain the bikes, I have different mechanics for the different kinds of bikes that I own. For my Husqvarna motorcycles, I go to the authorized service centers for regular check-ups. I treat my bikes like they’re my children. No exaggeration. Owning bikes requires you to take care of them.

How much is riding a part of your life?

21:36 Jay

Professionally, I’m tied to motorcycles and riding because of the television shows that I’m doing now. Personally, I can’t imagine not riding. It’s become my way of life. I’m okay to lose my cars, but not my motorcycles. Like my fellow regular riders, we’ve already adapted to various riding and weather conditions that no matter the scenario, we would still choose our bikes as the top choice for transportation. Motorcycles are very practical in many ways.

What are your pet peeves when it comes to other riders?

24:27 Jay

My pet peeves include riders who do not abide by traffic rules and have no courtesy for other motorists. Owning a motorcycle does not give you the license to be rude and disrespectful to other people using the road, whether fellow motorcyclists, drivers, or even pedestrians.
