Welcome all to the Men of Sorrows finding Joy podcast. I am William

Lloyd, a man of Sorrow. Our podcast is committed to supporting and

encouraging men to process their grief in order to heal and return to

joyful living in the midst of great sadness. Although it is directed toward men,

all are welcome to tune in and participate.

The reason for Men of Sorrows Finding Joy is geared toward men is the

fact that in most of the grief support groups I attended after the death of my

son, men were noticeably absent, and one of the often-heard reports of the

wives, mothers and sisters about the men in the family was, “They are angry and

keep busy.” Big boys don’t cry was a

phrase I grew up with, but here, men are invited to cry, mourn and express

their emotions by following the example of the best, bravest and strongest man

that ever lived, Jesus Christ. Hebrews 5:7 - During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up

prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save

him from death and Isaiah 51 declares Jesus was a man of sorrows acquainted

with grief.

When our daughter, Becca, passed from this earth at age 29 on Oct. 12, 2011, we were devastated, as all parents are. We did not know anyone who had lost a child, could not find any local support groups for parents who were grieving the loss of a child (a different kind of grief than any other) and were left trying to navigate through the swirling dark waters on our own.

As a mother going through intense grief, many books I read left me remaining in the place of hopelessness and despair, and seemed to indicate that it was a land of no return.

With four other children, and two grandchildren at the time (one of them being Becca’s daughter), that just wasn’t acceptable to me. There had to be a way to heal; to stop the intense stabbing pain that left one unable to function for months and years, without forgetting Becca. A way to move forward, not just as a shell of a person waiting to die, but a survivor with something to give, and a full life to live.

A way to honor our daughter with life, not more death.

Our faith in God and belief in His ability to give us hope eventually pulled me out of that deep black hole parents who have lost a child know all too well.

That same faith in God, His Son and the Holy Spirit, continued to take us beyond hope to where we are today, and where we continue to walk, one day at a time. We will never be the same people we were before the death of our daughter, and will continue to deal with the daily results of the “amputation” of a child missing from our lives here on earth.

Dan and Maura Duddy lost their son, Francis in a drunk driving accident. The driver, Connor, was a friend of the family and a young man Dan coached and mentored. Dan and his son forgave Connor publicly, and the family as a whole, forgave him privately. Dan's story is a beautiful story of redemption, resurrection and renewal.

"It's our mission to make sure two lives aren't taken through this process,'' Dan Duddy Jr., the victim's brother, said in court before Hanifin was sentenced.

"We'll do this through forgiveness and remaining by Connor's side from here on out,'' he said.

After Liam died, I was much more empathetic. I thought feeling guilty for someone's death only pertained to suicide or something you did to kill the person accidently. I was very surprised how many people felt guilty in cases I thought were beyond their control like cancer, old age, a car accident etc. I found that guilt is more common in grief than it is absent.

In today's meditation we learn why guilt is not from God and the day is common where all things will be redeemed.
