This episode is painfully overdue, by several months. I won’t get into it but there has been a lot going on. And, as I mention in the episode, sometimes we hear a message at the right time. When I resumed editing and heard Sue talk, I was eagerly listening again and absorbing again.

Two things to note:

At the end of 2024, Sue closed Boss Mouse Cheese but as she posts on Instagram still teaches cheesemaking classes on her farm and she can still be reached via Instagram.
This episode was recorded before the 2024 election and we both had hope in our voices. I know my voice has changed but I still have a little bit of hope. It is important to know when it was recorded though because, well, you’ll hear. I don’t know about Sue but my answer to who I admire would include what she said that day.

Editing this one was a joy and gave me a sense of normalcy that I haven’t had in over a month. I broke my leg and left A&E at 2:30am on my birthday. That wasn’t how I planned to start my year of being 45. But in listening and editing, I appreciated the conversation that I’m now sharing with you because this is a conversation with a friend who I got to learn a lot about and who I wouldn’t have been able to engage with in the same way at 35 or 25. I even bought a sweater that is too cool for me to own but I wear it anyway! This is a fun interview and a very open discussion I enjoyed with AJ. I appreciate so much when my guests are willing to talk about things that could be difficult. In addition to talking about the work AJ is passionate about, as a trans man, he was willing to answer some of my questions about his transition which gave me a rare insight into that experience as it will you, the listener. “We're stronger together than we are apart,” with tutor and comedian Mark Nicholas

This week’s guest is Mark Nicholas, comedian, comedy workshop leader and tutor.

After getting his comedy start while on an extended trip to Vietnam, Mark has been working his way around the London comedy circuit. He created his show Laugh-Able to be an inclusive space for acts with disabilities. Being autistic himself and coming from a family of those serving or caring for others with disabilities, he is an advocate and activist in that space.

Before all of this, Mark started work he continues today. During college, he was working in a bar and realized it wasn’t for him when he saw an ad on Gumtree that led to him working as a tutor and then in special education. He talks about all of this and his work as a union rep in the episode.

“Just choose yourself…” with social entrepreneur Elizabeth Mhangami

his week’s guest is Elizabeth Mhangami, social entrepreneur.

Lizz grew up in Zimbabwe and moved to the US when she was 19. After working in various jobs including at the Chicago Athletic Foundation, she also earned her bachelor’s degree at Loyola University. She then started the job that would define her career so far, working with young people from underserved communities.

Prior to moving to the states the first time, Lizz was part of the Rotary international as a youth. Her later work with Rotaract started her thinking more about youth communities, especially at home. She founded Vanavevhu, a 5013c for kids in Zimbabwe, many who are heads of household. She ran the organization for 7 years and has handed over the day to day operations. Now, she is back in the US and heading up major gifts at the Mikva Challenge in Chicago.

We talk about her childhood through adulthood and the influences and experiences that led to to a path of working in and leading service organisations.

John is was born and raised in New Jersey where he is currently based. He started his career in impact consulting and then transitioned into non-profit. He made the move when during a time of self-discovery, he he realised he wanted to be of service.

For John, it is important for him to believe in the mission of the organization that he is working for whether it is non-profit or for profit and in both his full-time job and his volunteering with ARM he has found that.

ARM was founded to be a support system for people in need. After starting out as a food service organisation, they shifted their focus to health and hygiene interventions providing mobile showers and a mobile barbershop.

You won’t hear it but I had SO much trouble saying the name of the organization! Thank goodness for acronyms. I learned that Archangel Rafael is the patron saint of healing and the work that ARM does definitely serves that purpose. John and I spoke about ARM’s affiliation with a church but how the involvement of the church doesn’t extend to evangelism. It is so important that when any of us set out to do charitable work as individuals or organisations, that we remove personal gain from the objectives and that’s just what happens here. I mention it to John but one thing I really appreciated in our talk, besides how he is going about giving, is the respect he has for the people he is serving in the way he talks about them. It is something I’ve thought about again in editing. I volunteer for a charity that serves the homeless in London and often think about how people are treated depending on their social status.

Rani grew up in US and moved to India for singing at the age of 17. It wasn’t her first time in India though. There, she started own business, which teaches leadership through the power of dance. Eventually, she returned to the US and to WOM where she ended up creating an HR department when seeing the need in the business which was a focus on the human element of the business.

Firstly, it has been a while. For quite a few reasons, I couldn’t get an episode edited or out for a while. I think I’ve sorted all of that. Thank you for being here whether you have been waiting a while or it is your first time.

I mention it in the episode but need to say more about the experience of meeting Chris for the first time. We both spoke at an event for a company that is actually under the same Groupe as where I work. I’d say it was by chance but I don’t think that much happens just by chance. I was added as a speaker last minute. Though I perform comedy a few times a week, I don’t give talks about me, about Multiple Sclerosis or about ableism but with a day to prepare, I did. It was clunky but ok. Then, I witnessed Chris talk about his life, his work and the world we are all living in. I was taken aback and had to have him on the podcast. I wanted more people to hear him. I wanted you to hear him, whoever you are. I’d love to hear what you think if you want to share.

"We all are the experts of our own lives" with transformational coach and stand up comedian Maz Alexander

This week’s guest is Maz Alexander, social worker, mental wellbeing coach, comedian and passionate entrepreneur.

Maz started out working as a social worker in adult social care. A thread you’ll hear in here story, and one to keep in mind as you listen, is that she listened to the advice of others when it made sense to and listened to herself as well when she decided on what work to pursue.

Before her time in social work, Maz got a degree in performance arts and gave acting a go. Coming out of that, she was always passionate about drama therapy and using performing arts to help people in recovery which has served her in social work and serves her in what she does today.

In 2018, she qualified in Transformational Coaching and she is a coach today while she also works part time in social work. We chat the difference between what a coach and a therapist can give you. Oh, and the time she had to refer a client not to a therapist but to a priest!

This week’s guest is Stefania Licari, actor, comedian, producer and medical doctor.

She attended drama school, became a doctor working in anaesthetics and intensive care, and went to clowning school in Paris. We get into all of this and how empathy towards her colleagues, patients and the audience really tie it all together.

During the pandemic, Stefania has a unique experience both working in medicine and as an actor doing online performances. She got through it with a mindset shift that she shares which would be useful for anyone at any time, even outside lockdowns.

We start with her reflections on her first Edinburgh Fringe in 2022. She is currently revamping her one-woman show, Medica, and taking it to the Vault Festival in London.

I’ll be there to see the updated version in February and can’t wait. One of the best parts of being involved in entertainment is being able to celebrate the talents of others while also being assured enough in yourself to do so. “The rewards come in different shapes and sizes,” with Americana band True Strays

This week’s guests are James Cameron and Joe James from True Strays. True Strays is an Americana band.

I spoke with the guys in December of 2022. So, when they talk about “next year”, they mean this year, 2023. They are going on tour so check them out in the UK! If you’re not in the UK, then listen to them online.

The childhood friends were recording their debut album when the pandemic hit in 2020 and had to figure out how to move forward. They launched a Kickstarter campaign and found success there and that they already had some great fans in their corner.

Both of the guys work full-time jobs outside of the band and then focus on the band during nights and weekends! One is a roofer and one is a primary school teacher. You’ll need to listen to find out who does what.

Maybe it's time that I do something,” with songwriter, designer and Smile Songs creator

This week’s guest is Sharon Glassman, designer, songwriter and founder of Smile Songs.

The Colorado-based Smile Songs incorporates all of Sharon’s talents into a line of musical cards and gifts. In addition to containing original music by Sharon, Smile Songs products are unique because they use QR codes to deliver the sound which is better for the environment than traditional musical cards that utilize plastic parts for example. Though QR codes are common place after 2020, she started using them in 2013 and we chat about that.

In college, Sharon majored in journalism school. She then got accepted into law school and made a deal with her dad that she would defer for a year and attend. She ended up taking an entirely different path!

Prior to founding Smile Songs, Sharon had a hybrid career. She was a voice over artist. She was also a writer for the ads department at MTV Networks where she applied her love of music to the ads she and the team worked on and created. After working at MTV, she performing and telling stories on stage, touring the country. Meanwhile, she was acquiring skills, teaching herself digital illustration, print production and music production.

Musically, Sharon has had another path having previously joined community orchestra. Then, through a misunderstood Craigslist ad she became the fiddler of a country rock band. Now she is in an all-woman bluegrass project called Five Foot Betty.

"Take massive imperfect action every day," with non-profit founder and multipreneur Tamara Doerksen

This week’s guest is Tamara Doerksen, multi-preneur, published author, yoga and meditation and mindfulness teacher, and a career transition and entrepreneur coach. She’s also the founder of the non-profit organization, Lonny’s Smile.

I chatted with Tamara from her home in Toronto, Canada. She started her career at a global consulting company where she spent 25 years. Around 2010, an initiative of the company around community contribution and responsibility, along with some personal circumstances with ailing parents, set Tamara off on her path to founding her own non-profit. You’ll hear the entire story around Lonny’s Smile which helps kids with congenital heart defects including the absolute synergy that led to choosing Camp OKI, the benefactor of the non-profit.

Through her work with Great Big Sea’s Murray Foster, Tamara ended up working in film production and then collaborating with Darren Portelli at Crazy D’s Prebiotic Sparkling Sodas. In talking through Tamara’s career transitions, we delve into having faith in oneself, transferable skills and our abilities to pursue various occupations within our careers.

Tamara uses yoga and meditation to ground herself and give her space. And, she is certified to teach both! Some just practiced these things during the pandemic, others like Tamara got certified!

“Anyone can have a great relationship if they want to,” with Diana Indries, Founder of Better Topics Card Game for Couples

This week’s guest is Diana Indries, the founder of Better Topics Card Games.Better Topics born out of Diana’s interest in relationships and learning to communicate within those. Relationships are very important to her. So important In fact, that she recently moved from England back home to Romania.

Diana believes the keys to a great relationship are communication and fun. She also believes that anyone can have a great relationship if they want to!

Diana and her husband started working on Better Topics well ahead of 2020 but really saw the need once people were locked in with each other and didn’t know where to start communicating. Prior to working full time on this company, she was working in the NHS. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, she quit her job to pursue Better Topics.

In the past, Diana and her husband played other card games for couples and realised that none of them did much to increase communication. A lot of them were not even games but just questions that could only be answered once. They sought to remedy that and ask questions that can be repeated over time as their answer would change.

In founding her own business, Diana discovered her creativity. And, it is on her days off that her creativity is the most inspired. Hear her story, what her company is about and her advice on relationships.

"You never want someone to leave your restaurant hungry." with Chef Dennis

This week’s guest is Chef Dennis, the founder of the food blog, Ask Chef Dennis. Incidentally, he is also a chef!

Dennis was always a fan of food. He gained early inspiration was Graham Kerr, an Australian television chef who showed him how great you could make people feel by cooking for them.

Professionally, he started out as a prep cook, carefully observing the chefs with the aspiration of moving into that role. After a chef at the restaurant he was working in was injured during a busy weekend, Dennis got his big break.

Later, following a bout with carpal tunnel, Dennis moved into business dining for a time and then on to a school where he revamped the dining program and also stared educating students on cooking. His blogging stared as an output of what he was teaching at the school and eventually grew to have a worldwide following!

What I like about Chef Dennis is that he always ends up going back to what he loves, which is food, no matter how is is lead to it.

“It all prepared me to get outta my comfort zone,” with Patrick Alcoke, entrepreneur and co-founder of Find Your Steady

This week’s guest is Patrick Alcoke, marketing entrepreneur and co-founder of Find Your Steady. We chatted via SquadCast from his living room in Maryland and mine in London, UK.

Patrick’s career started out with him pursuing music after college. He moved to California and was touring the country in a band. Eventually though, he put that dream aside to pursue a different career path. We discuss his relationship with music today which is a lot different than it was from ages 15 - 27.

Patrick co-founded Find Your Steady, a mindful candle company, with his friend Brian. The two played in a band together at Virginia Tech. During the pandemic, while keeping their own respective mental health in check with their routines, they ended up combining Patrick’s meditation with Brian’s candle-making to produce their line of candle gifts complete with a web app of de-stressing tools and a journal.

I have met with a few of my former classmates and colleagues and every time the chats are so rewarding. I find it a privilege to get to see what people have been up to years after we first met or even had contact in some cases and that’s how it was with Patrick. “Drink water” is something we say a few times during the chat and that has struck me. I have even formed a new, healthy habit since we chatted. It’s drinking more water!

I left the podcast light and didn’t do a spoken intro because when I tried it was a rant. I want to state very clearly here that I stand with my Jewish friends and and the Jewish people. Kanye West’s disgusting anti-semitism is only the tip of the iceberg of what hate is expressed and if my putting this in writing offends someone then I hope they get help, get knowledge and change. Adidas finally cut his contract but that won’t stop what is happening to people all over. I may do an intro next week but this week, it was important to put it in writing.

The Go-Giver is a business parable that illustrates shifting your focus from getting to giving. In it, there are five laws of stratospheric success that are presented through characters. The laws are value, compensation, influence, authenticity and receptivity.

In this brief episode, we chat about the book and all five values including which value is hardest for people to fulfil. The chat provided great insight for those who have read The Go-Giver and those who haven’t yet.

Paul works with organisations to help them come up come up with ways to bring together all of the public-facing elements to drive actions such as fundraising or advocacy. He started out in political fundraising with the Labour Party and has worked with political and social organisations since.

The areas he’s chosen to focus on are borne out of Paul’s own background being the son of Italian immigrants and being aware of how is family was treated but also the impact of witnessing activism in his teens and living through specific events in the 1980s in England and seeing people fighting against injustice.

Paul’s story of discovering he could have a career in what he doest today is one to hear. He started out in the mail room of an agency that focused on charity and political organisations and progressed through positions from there until he was Client Services Director.

Paul founded Rally when he saw the same things happen over and over and truly believed in the approach of digital mobilisation which wasn’t a total fit within agencies. In founding his own agency, he can empower organisations with that focus. Through the Rally network, he can bring together others in various areas of expertise to work with him and each other when they are needed.

We chat extensively about causes Paul supports and the impact each individual can have. Listen up for all of that plus what Paul does to disconnect and the invaluable advice he gives.

"Have a game plan and work really hard," with Mitlin Financial Founder Larry Sprung

This week’s guest is Larry Sprung, founder and wealth advisor.

Larry is the founder of Mitlin Financial and the story of the naming of the firm is a sweet one. His reasons for going into wealth management are a reflection of the values shared in his family and the result of his upbringing. It is his way of serving others through the work he does.

Larry also created the Mitlin Money Mindset podcast. After publishing a blog but wanting to say more in a different way, the podcast was started as an opportunity to share content in a different way. Guests talk about getting into the success mindset and more.

Until recently, Larry served on the national board of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. His involvement with the organization began after facing the loss of his wife’s brother. He started out by doing a golf fundraiser and now along with is wife, partners with romance authors for a book fundraiser every May. Through all of the efforts, they have raised over $1.7 million dollars for AFPA.

Peconic Hockey Foundation is another place Larry gives his time and effort. They are bringing hockey and awareness of the sport on the East end of Lang Island with the ultimate goal of building a facility so more families have access to the sport.

“Age is a number,” with Colour Alchemist Founder Martina Carello

This week’s guest is Martina Carello, founder of the Colour Alchemist Canada.

In her business, she has sought to help others avoid mistakes that impede fashion business growth and success. Martina is also developing two clothing lines of her own including one that focuses on Gen X women and focuses not only on their bodies but also the stories the women have to tell.

Martina’s love of clothes started early on and she was given her first sewing machine when she was eight. Though she started out in a liberal arts program when she first went to college, she ended up going to fashion college after reckoning with the passing of her grandmother who had been designer. She earned her degree in Fashion Design Marketing and even worked professionally during school.

We talk about her purpose and also about the way times have changed. Our chat takes place on the eve of Martina’s 50th birthday which makes it a reflective and reverent time to talk about life and career.

“Starting is probably the hardest thing to do’” with Life Balance Coach Sara Deacon

Sara was working in postpartum care but once the pandemic hit, she began coaching full time when things went virtual. Her work became focused on young adults and teenagers. She works with them on decisions, understanding how to live in their core values and how to cope with different situations.

After her eldest son started learning karate, Sara decided to take on that challenge too and now she teaches martial arts part time. We chat about the lessons learned in practicing martial arts and starting such an activity as an adult.

"Advocating for oneself does not ever end," with Guest Liz Benditt, Founder of The Balm Box

This week’s guest is Liz Benditt, founder of The Balm Box and part-time professor at the University of Kansas.

She earned her undergraduate degree in Broadcast Film Communications. Following school, Liz worked at Disney before pursing her MBA at to USC. During her career, she has worked for major retailers and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City.

Four cancer diagnoses and recoveries over the course of 8 years launched her company. After receiving gifts that were well-intentioned but not useful, she wondered if other people felt the same. Though the idea came to Liz back in 2017 but it wasn’t until the pandemic that she had time to explore it. In 2020, The Balm Box launched. The unique site provides shoppers with practical gifting options for cancer patients.

Throughout her life Liz has also been involved in her community but in 2016, her political advocacy started after the election of Donald Trump. In 2017, in response to a school superintendent’s view of the safety pin movement, Liz and others founded Education First Shawnee Mission, and advocacy group for her local school district. She’ll also be on the board of the National Charity League.

"You deserve a voice at the table," with School Board Candidate and Activist Andrew Taban

This week’s guest is Andrew Taban, school board candidate and activist.

Andrew grew up in Santa Clarita, CA, a community north of Los Angeles. Some may recognize it as the home of Magic Mountain. He is now running for William S Hart Union School District Trustee Area 2.

Andrew’s participation in his community started at age 13. He became an activist in response to school budget cuts taking away the chance for kids to take part in a promotion ceremony from junior high to high school.

In high school worked in the GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) and joined board of PFLAG. He has worked as an education advocate and youth-based non-profits including Lifeworks in Los Angeles which is part of the Los Angeles LGBT Center. We talk about all of this work and how he was impacted by the homeless youth who had come out and has helped facilitate conversations with parents.

During State Assembly person Christy Smith’s term, Andrew worked as the education liaison in the State Assembly. His current platform for his school board campaign is three-pronged focusing on representation, funding and student wellness.

"We have to treat people better," with Martin Henson, Black Lives Advocate and BMEN Foundation Founder

This week’s guest is Martin Henson, activist and Executive Director of the BMEN Foundation, an organization that is focused on providing community and support for issues specific to black men.

The founding of BMEN came out of looking at the way men in general were responding to MeToo and the need for a conversation that focused on the experience of black men and the subjects of consent, experiencing sexual harm themselves and holistically looking at the new landscape.

BMEN has strived to be inclusive of all black men doing work to make sure that the conversation isn’t just around the heteronormative experiences but also work with the queer and transgender community.

Martin earned his Master’s degree in counselling and did that as a practice before moving into activism. We discuss why he made that transition in this episode. For a while, he was an activist with Black Lives Matter and then moved on to practice more restorative justice.

Growing up in the church had a huge impact in how was taught to treat other people. His father was a pastor. He also went to community centres and his mom currently runs one. Stepdad taught him to be of service and also about black history. We talk about navigating his upbringing in the South and in churches to come together with his values now.

In this chat, we also discuss how self-care plays a big role for Martin as he engages in emotionally difficult work. Don’t miss this episode.

"I knew what I wanted to do since I was 12" with Philip Simon (Stand Up Comedian, Actor and Writer)

This week’s guest is writer, actor and comedian, Philip Simon.

Philip started out as an actor, attending the Guildford Theatre School before landing his first professional gig in a commercial. After a long run as Daddy Pig in a staged puppetry production of Peppa Pig, he decided it was time for a change and enrolled in a course at The Comedy School in London.

On the stage performing standup comedy is where Philip feels immense joy. We chat about his work and also the sudden impact of COVID lockdowns on performers. While unable to entertain audiences in person, the father of two acted as head teacher for his kids and also created “School’s Out Comedy Club”, an online comedy program for kids. Out of that came a kids’ comedy book and the opportunity to give back. Profits from book sales go to the charity FareShare which fights against hunger in the UK.

Philip also teaches sex education in Jewish schools and hosts the podcast “Jew Talkin’ To Me” with fellow stand up comic Rachel Creeger. He’ll be at Edinburgh Fringe this year with two shows so check out the details below. You’ll want to find out where to watch him after listening to this one!

Antonella started out as a web developer and moved into marketing roles working in e-commerce at ProFlowers, Guitar Center, JC Penney and Fossil gaining experience in all aspects of digital marketing.

After 20 years working at large companies, Antonella took a year off to travel to places she could have never gone to while working full-time. When she returned, she went into part-time consulting for Dallas-based Peacock Alley. From there, Eyeful Media was born!

Antonella spoke about founding her own marketing agency and very importantly about building the value of service into the culture. She is personally passionate about volunteerism and service, and has fully incorporated this into her company. This value is core to how people treat each other internally, interact with the client and interact with their community.

Antonella also talks about her daily practice that helps her balance running a company, building her team and her path to leaving corporate life.

Fully disclosure, I have known Antonella for almost twenty years but I learned so much about her in this conversation. She was my boss for a while and prior to that a coworker and a friend. After starting out as a Philosophy major and then moving into graphic design as an undergraduate, Jazeen fell in to video editing.

Now, she has taken a big step and decided to pursue writing as a career. Jazeen is entering the University of British Columbia’s MFA program for writing full-time in the Fall.

We chat quite a lot about making the choice to pursue a creative career and how sometimes it isn’t even a choice but necessary! For anyone who has been wondering if they should take the plunge and do the thing, Jazeen might who you need to listen to today (whatever day that is)!

"Make other people’s lives better," with Ukrainian tech founder Andrew Alexseyenko

This week’s guest is Andrew Alexseyeko. He is the founder of two tech companies and co-founder of KOLO which is an organization helping those on the front lines of the war in Ukraine.

Recently, Andrew fled his home in Kiev due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. He spoke to me from a city in Western Ukraine where he is currently residing and working.

After spending some years as a product manager, Andrew founded the software development company Storypoint and software reseller and implementer Partnerway. The latter seeks to help businesses in Ukraine digitize and adopt technology.

When the war started, Andrew worked with peers and friends in the tech industry to build the Help Ukraine Win (https://helpukrainewin.org/) website. Then, they founded KOLO, a fund to assist the Ukrainian military purchase items they need such as vests, drones and night vision tools.

Through crisis, Andrew has found a different purpose and has also seen a change to the way a team works together too. It redefines the culture. To that end, Andrew has decided to take no profits from his businesses until the war is over and will be putting the funds into supporting Ukrainian refugees and the army.

Lastly, Andrew and his team are creating a platform for those in Ukraine looking for work in tech, to match with those hiring. The war has also taken a toll on how businesses operate inside the country and others interact with Ukraine from outside the country.

"The secret is to learn how to serve others in a really meaningful way," with Peacemaker Doug Noll

This week’s guest is Douglas E. Noll, lawyer turned peacemaker.

Doug was raised in California and left the state to go to Dartmouth where he earned an undergraduate degree in English. In 1974 he returned to California entered law school, eventually graduating with honors.

Doug spent 22 years working as a civil trial lawyer, trying over 250 cases during that time! He realized in that time that though the work was interesting, his heart wasn’t in it.

Concurrently, Doug started studying martial arts and earned a 2nd degree blackbelt in one discipline before moving to Tai Chi at the advice of his teacher. As he explains, it was the teachings of Tai Chi that led him to the epiphany that he needed to do something else…something that would make an impact.

You’ll hear more in the episode but at nearly 50 years old, Doug quit his job and started a Master's program in Peacemaking and Conflict Studies offered at Fresno Pacific University which he completed. He also became a certified energy healer (panic healing) and arhatic yoga practitioner.

Along with Laurel Kaufer, he founded Prison of Peace, a wonderful organisation bringing conflict resolution to the incarcerated as well as others. Hear about it in the episode. Additionally, he is a mediator for private conflicts.

This week’s guest is Genesis Amaris Kemp. She’s a visionary life coach, motivational speaker and podcast founder.

Genesis started out working in hospitals and intended to go to medical school. But, she ended up spending over a decade in the oil and gas industry. Her first role was as an imaging clerk (scanning papers all day!). Through curiosity, networking and learning, Genesis ended up in project and program management. In fact, she did it again when she went to work for a Fortune 500 company showing what real grit and humility is needed to start anew.

In late 2020, Genesis lost her job just one week following her father’s death. She took the opportunity to self-reflect and ultimately realized what her gifts are and how she could monetise them. In doing so she became an entrepreneur.

In May 2020, Genesis’ book, “Chocolate Drop in Corporate America: From the Pit to the Palace” was published. You’ll hear about the inspirational read about overcoming systemic racism in the workplace and climbing the corporate ladder.

New Story is focused on looking for innovative ways to solve the global housing crisis and homelessness. New Story Charity is the first such organisation to be part of Y Combinator. During college, Josh was a two sport Division 1 athlete and double-majored. He went to work on Wall Street right after graduating and you’ll hear why he moved on from that career and went to work on the State Senate campaign for Barry Finegold before getting accepted to Harvard for grad school and eventually taking his role at New Story Charity.

Losing his dad at a young age affected how Josh has lived his life and the role he has played in his family. We talk a bit about that too. He shares advice that I think a lot of people need to hear during what has been a time of transition. Listen up!

This week’s guest is Cathy Nesbitt, Worm Advocate and Laugher Ambassador based in Ontario, Canada.

What is a Worm Advocate? Someone who sees worms as useful in the fight against climate change for one! Cathy is actually the founder Cathy's Crawly Composters which is a worm-based composting business. In fact, she is celebrating the 20th anniversary of her company.

New to composting or not sure what it is? Listen up because we talk about that in the first 5 minutes.

Did you know worms have no eyes? Cathy mentions this and other interesting facts about them.

Before starting her business, Cathy was a social worker, focused on adults living with challenges. She continues to serve that community through education as part of her business.

Cathy also does laughter yoga. It is part of her personal wellness practice but also something she shares. She holds her own online group you can join, and she teaches a special needs class. Laughter yoga is intentional laughing. We chat about the origin of the practice in 1995 and how Cathy has incorporated this into her life and work. In 2016, she got trained as a teacher.

I was skeptical about laughter yoga before this chat but in hearing about it from Cathy, I get it. Admittedly, I haven’t practiced it yet though I think I do a form of it when I rewatch old Robin Williams clips…

This chat reminded me that I am often skeptical of things I hear about but when I dig deeper and remove my own ignorance, people are doing really cool things that work for them. It’s not much different than the sentiment of the adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” In editing, I always reflect on my conversations even more and Cathy made me think a lot about living with intention and purpose and being brave enough to pivot to fulfil that purpose when what we’re doing initially is no longer service us. "If I'm not enjoying it, I don't want to write it" with Kevin G. Chapman, Crime Fiction Novelist and Lawyer

This week’s guest is Kevin G. Chapman, Assistant General Counsel at Dow Jones and Company, and crime fiction author.

Kevin is a labor and employment lawyer who started out in law firms. But, for the last 27 years he has been in-house counsel having started out at The Wall Street Journal. He has resided in Central New Jersey for that long too.

As a lawyer, Kevin writes a LOT. But it was when he got laid off from a firm 5 years after finishing law school that he started writing his first fiction novel, Identity Crisis which he published via a small publishing house. His next book took 10 years to complete and was self-published.

We get into how he approached writing differently when he decided to write for the purpose of selling his work starting with his first crime fiction novel, Righteous Assassin. Also, how he went about learning to market his novels and the business of self-publishing. Kevin has written an entire crime fiction series focused around the main character he created, NYPD Detective Mike Stoneman. One of those novels, Lethal Voyage, was even a Kindle Book Award finalist in 2021!

Hear about what Kevin is working on next and the communities he is a part of both as an independent author and as in-house counsel. He also plays tournament poker!

Manik studied Political Science as an undergrad at Harvard University and then earned his Master’s in international Relations at Cambridge University in England.

After school, he ended up working in Finance at an investment firm and then pursued law school. During law school, he worked at an internship with the economic policy team in the first Obama Administration. There, he met the Deputy CTO of the US, Beth Noveck, and was introduced to the idea that tech, law and government intersected so moved into tech for good.

He went to The Governance Lab (The Gov Lab) at NYU where tech for government was in action. Hear about the exciting project that they did with the United Nations.

Manik co-founded Therma when was Inspired to move into private sector and entrepreneurship after seeing the opportunity to build and scale a company while also having a positive social impact.

Therma is working to improve the cold chain which is the part of the supply chain that moves food and also medical supplies (like vaccines!). It is smart refrigeration technology for that seeks to reduce food waste, energy waste and refrigerant leakage.

"You will never be younger than you are today," with Photographer Julie Campbell

This week’s guest is photographer Julie Campbell. She is based near Ventura County in Southern California. Her focus is mostly on family and newborn photography but she does corporate photography such as product for brands and headshots. Full disclosure, she took the host Rabiah’s family photos in December.

Julie actually started out as an elementary school teacher. When she had kids of her own she started photographing them and really enjoyed it. This hobby got more serious as she took online tutorials to build up her skillset. Getting a DSLR camera was a game changer. With this new equipment in hand, she taught herself Photoshop. She also got education around starting a photography business which she highly recommends anyone starting out take the time to do early on!

At the suggestion of her husband, Julie branched out from taking photos of her own family into taking photos for other families. At first, she did it free of charge but after a while, it was time to start getting paid for the work.

We talked about transitioning to charging what she was worth which is a struggle for a lot of creatives and entrepreneurs. We also discussed something that people often reveal to their photographer; everyone is self-conscious when having photo taken. If you are one of those people, you’ll want to hear this chat. You’re not alone.

Julie did an excellent job photographing my family near Malibu, CA. We all love our photos but we definitely all brought our own brand of “I hope I look ok” to the shoot. This week’s guest is JJ Ramberg, entrepreneur, television host, podcast host, best selling author and mom.

She is the co-founder of Goodpods, a podcast player that is seeking to solve the podcast discovery problem by allowing users to follow friends and influencers. Shows they listen to display in follower’s feeds. The app has been awarded honors by both Fast Company and Inc.

JJ also founded two companies with a charity focus. Goodshop is a coupon site where users can find the best coupons online and choose to have a percentage of their purchase go to a cause or charity. And Dogdog.org is a search engine that donates money to dog shelters every time a visitor searches the site.

JJ became aware of companies giving back (The Body Shop and Ben and Jerry’s) when she was young. Her parents also were always giving back. It became a goal to start a socially responsible company.

Before Goodpods, JJ was a journalist hosting the MSNBC show “Your Business” which focused on the stories of entrepreneurs. She started out studying journalism and then went to business school. Throughout her career she went between working in journalism and startups even founding Goodshop just as she was starting her MSNBC show.

JJ is also the author of two books. It’s Your Business was written with producers from her MSNBC show and contains small business tips learned while making the the show. And, The Startup Club is a book for kids about entrepreneurship.

We also chatted about the impact JJ’s upbringing had on her as wet watched her parents both run their own companies. The ability to take a risk was engrained in her. Check out the episode for more!

"They don't want to leave Ukraine" with Veronika Didusenko, Ukrainian activist and Miss Ukraine 2018

This week’s guest is Veronika Didusenko, former Miss Ukraine. She was stripped of the title for also being a mother and is an activist for the #righttobeamother campaign. But, she is on More Than Work now to talk about the Russian war on Ukraine.

Veronika is one of 2 million people who has fled Ukraine. She left with her son. She talks about the experience of leaving, the people who are still at home and what we can do to help.

 We spoke after she held a press conference in Los Angeles with Gloria Allred asking the US to take more action including issuing emergency Visas and status to those fleeing Ukraine. She could not bring her son with her to the United States because he did not have a Visa.

Actions to take:

If you know of Ukrainian refugees, help them by providing housing, clothing, food and anything else they may need. They left their homes with very little and don’t know that they will see them again.

Contact your government representatives and ask that US (or UK) immigration laws be adjusted to allow Ukrainian refugees of war to enter the country. Families should not be separated and people need to find the help they need.

Contact your representatives and encourage them to continue to send weapons, munitions, food, etc to Ukraine.

For now, it is important her voice and the voice of other Ukrainians is heard. One part of the conversation that we didn’t get in the recording was her recounting that a child died of dehydration while in shelter in Ukraine because there was no water. "Make things just for fun" with Sweet Tooth Hotel Founder Jencey Keeton

This week’s guest is Jencey Keeton, Founder at Sweet Tooth Hotel. Sweet Tooth Hotel is an immersive art gallery in Dallas, Texas. It is a platform for local artists and also special installations with outside artists. What makes Sweet Tooth Hotel “immersive”? Guests can touch everything in the gallery. The art is accessible to everyone and local artists are celebrated there, even before they are big on the coasts. Jencey’s mom was an art teacher so she learned to appreciate and create art from her childhood. She is often involved in making the art at Sweet Tooth Hotel from cutting fabric and sewing to painting.

Before Sweet Tooth Hotel, Jencey was a working musician and then a digital marketer. Her marketing career took her to Fossil and then into commercial real estate. It happens that in learning about real estate and conscious capitalism, she saw an opportunity to rent a space in a construction office to create the first iteration of Sweet Tooth Hotel with her husband Cole. They drained their savings account and took a chance!

Sweet Tooth Hotel was a massive hit and they are expanding! The most recent exhibition was called Intangible which was an all-female exhibit of fiber art. What is fiber art? Think fabrics like crochet, pom poms and more! Also, Jencey offers some great advice to artists looking to get their work displayed.

We talked about what Jencey is doing outside of Sweet Tooth Hotel too delving into balance, health and music. She was in a touring folk pop band for 3 years. Then, her and her husband Cole formed French 75 and composed, recorded and performed together in collaboration with DJ Left/Right. Jencey is ready for her next music pursuit.

"Patience is really the hard part" with Rock Felder Co-Founder and CFO of Squadcast

This week’s guest is Rock Felder, Co-founder and CFO of SquadCast. This is the second interview with a SquadCast founder. Zach Moreno was on the podcast previously so check that out too. Rock grew up in a family that included entrepreneurs. And, when it was time for him to go to college and go to work, he knew he had to be self-sufficient so he chose accounting as a career knowing it was a job that paid well and was always needed. Being a CPA allowed him to work in many industries (agriculture, construction, banking) and laid the foundation for him understanding business from the views of various departments.

Having always wanted to do his own thing and start a business, it was a no-brainer when he was approached by Zach regarding the idea for SquadCast. A wonderful business partnership was born. Anyone who has started a business or is thinking of starting a business will want to hear Rock’s decision to commit to doing that himself as well as how he works with his partner.

Rock is very passionate about his work and helping people solving their problems. In addition to caring about customers, he also cares about those he works with. Trust is a key value of his and we chatted about how that looks at SquadCast. We also chatted about hiring new people onto a team and what happiness at work means.

Rock isn’t all work and no play. For him, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an activity he enjoys for physical fitness. But it also has the benefit of mentally giving him a chance to escape from the work and personal things for a while. He can just focus on the activity. We talk through what a typical class looks like too!

“Just speak it out loud” with Paige Friend, Host of The Beach Speaks

This week’s guest is Paige Friend, creator of The Beach Speaks podcast and former corporate aviation industry professional.

Paige grew up in the mountains of Pennsylvania but always loved the beach. After an experience at a retreat in Italy with her favourite podcaster, returned from Italy and quit her job. It was time. We talk about releasing the attachment around what things are supposed to look like. As the story goes, Paige decided one day that she was going meet her soulmate, quit her 9 to 5 and move to the beach. Before life on the beach, Paige spent her career in corporate aviation.

At first, she wanted to be a pilot and got her pilot’s license when working for a small airport in Oklahoma. From there she ended up working in customer service in general aviation for 20 years.

Paige demonstrates going with her instincts about what she wants to do and then goes for it without having to know exactly how that thing will manifest.

Her podcast, “The Beach Speaks”, is a podcast for conscious people who love the beach and were inspired to create it after her morning practice of sitting on the beach. She has a voice that is perfect for this too.

Paige is also a certified yoga teacher. It is as much a spiritual as physical experience for her. She talks about how everyone can do yoga. It is just for those that can bend into pretzel shapes!

Her advice at the end on how to start to get to the thing you want to do is practical and you won’t want to miss it. And, her most inspirational person in the Fun Five was truly one of the most heartwarming so far.

Note from Rabiah (Host): Paige is peace. She really is. She is also someone I could have talked to for longer. Our conversation was easy and I was constantly getting shots of information throughout. She has followed her instincts and made changes to her life but in a way that is more positive than I have at times. It struck me she quit her job without resentment for example. She trusts herself. It was empowering to realise that maybe I could do this too. I hope that’s what you get out of it. For example, we talk about her mindfulness practice and the way she puts it, it is really something anyone can do.

We also went off on a taxidermy tangent for a minute which makes me laugh even as I write these notes!

"Ask big questions," with guest Molly Mandelberg, founder of "Wild Hearts Rise Up"

This week’s guest is Molly Mandelberg, founder of "Wild Hearts Rise Up" and the creator of Magnetic Influencer Collective. She is also an Artist having been an art major in school.

Her business is Wild Hearts Rise Up, is home to her podcast and her six month group program, Magnet Influencer Collective. She works to help people build courses and programs they can scale to go from a one-to-one to one-to-many business model.

Her work is built around energy (energetic marketing) and strategy. She works with clients on overcoming limiting beliefs and changing their lives, in turn changing their businesses too. They learn marketing tools and automation in addition to addressing personal obstacles.

As part of her upbringing, Molly learned a lot about the laws of attraction and consciousness. She also spent her 20s traveling to over 30 countries and working in non-career jobs while finding herself. After her healing experiences at a five day workshop with Dr. Brian Weiss, past life regression therapist, she decided to pursue hypnotherapy and became certified.

In starting her new practice, she became an entrepreneur. She also had to face all of her feelings of shortcomings and in that process transformed herself. She also found that she needed to do more than the one-on-one work that she was doing. Molly learned the technology, tools and marketing and found that she could help other healers and coaches so she started the career she is in now.

We chat about all of this including why she called her business “Wild Hearts Rise Up” and who she loves to work with. We also talk about another concept she is passionate about, the energy of peace with money, and how she incorporated practices around that into a program. Find out who she got inspiration for when she was transforming her own thoughts around money! She shared her views on taking personal responsibility and how powerful that is.

Molly still creates art. After 13 years as a nomad, she decided on pursuing van life four years ago. He biggest project has been the tiny house she built in a van which she lives in primarily taking herself to the multiple locations where she wants to live. She also paints, creates posters and does tie dye which she is selling on Etsy. It is important to her to carve out this time for herself.

Her advice at the end is super valuable to hear. You’ll hear it at the end of her podcast when you listen to that too!

"I’m incredibly lucky" with SquadCast CEO and Co-Founder Zach Moreno

This week’s guest is Zach Moreno, Co-Founder and CEO of SquadCast. SquadCast is a cloud recording studio that allows remote recording without sacrificing quality so people can create without need for a physical studio. In fact, this podcast is created with Squadcast.

Zach grew up in Central Valley and is now in the East Bay in Oakland, CA. Before founding the company with co-founder Rock Felder, he went to art school and also studied software engineering. He was an intern at Google on Chrome team and worked in the government.

After seeking to make his own sci-fi podcast with his brother and best friend and realising how difficult it was to record remotely at the time, the idea for SquadCast came to him.

We chat more about founding the company and it’s objectives. Squadcast is fully remote as a workplace and we also talk about how they decided to stand up the culture they did both with their user community and internally. Also, Zach’s brother and father work with him so we got into a discussion about working with family and boundaries. He took paternity leave recently too so new parents may be interested to hear about how he prepared for that as the co-founder of a company. Congratulations, Zach!

As he has design experience, Zach shared how empathy plays into user experience and design.

It wasn’t all shop talk. We also got into how podcasting can actually be appealing to introverts as well as mental health. Zach shared how meditation and yoga have been helpful to him in dealing with depression and anxiety. Also, as a Latinx founder of a company, we discussed the importance of having different voices in the room.

I embrace any guest who is willing to openly talk about the tough stuff too and Zach was willing to do so. "It's empowering to have more information," with guest Dr. Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall

This week’s guest is Dr. Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall, Professor of History at Cal State San Marcos where she teaches comparative history with courses focused around Haitian history, revolutionary Europe, women in Jewish history and travel and contact in the early modern world.

Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall thought she’d go to law school initially but inspiring debates and discussions with friends in the dorms, including at Oxford University, started to change that. After undergrad, she applied to law school and PhD History programs and got into both! She even interned at the Supreme Court and worked as a legal secretary but the history program ultimately won out.

Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall is trained as a historian of France. She became captivated with the 18th century ideals of equality and how they applied to the conflicting existence of slavery in the French colony of Haiti. This led to her own studies of Haiti and the lack of knowledge around Haiti has motivated her to teach about it too.

It is clear that Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall loves her students and learning about their backgrounds. She seeks to build community in her classroom and students find themselves immersed in multi-sensory experiences that include the incorporation of food and dance breaks. It isn’t surprising that she took home a student-nominated award, the Harry E. Brakebill Outstanding Professor Award which is a top honor at Cal State San Marcos.

She has published three books books including her most recent, "Slave Revolt on Screen: The Haitian Revolution in Film and Video Games”. It is one of the first books about video games written by a historian.

In her spare time, and outside of pandemic times, Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall is also active with the San Diego Jewish Film Festival volunteering her time as an academic, speaker and chaffeur. We also talk about her parents who are also academics. You’ll have to listen to learn more!

Official Bio: Dr. Alyssa Goldstein Sepinwall is Professor of History at California State University – San Marcos and past winner of the university’s Brakebill Distinguished Professor Award. She received her BA in History and Political Science from the University of Pennsylvania, and her MA and PhD in History from Stanford University. Her research specialties include the French and Haitian Revolutions, modern Haitian history, Slavery and Film, French colonialism, French-Jewish history, history and video games, and the history of gender. Her most recent book, Slave Revolt on Screen: The Haitian Revolution in Film and Video Games, was published by the University Press of Mississippi in 2021. Her previous works include the biography The Abbé Grégoire and the Making of Modern Universalism (University of California Press, new in paperback, 2021), and Haitian History: New Perspectives (Routledge, 2012).

Note from Rabiah (Host): I had an incredible time speaking with Dr. Goldstein Sepinwall. If you haven’t listened already, you’ll find her to be enthusiastic and open and quite frankly someone you could talk to all day. One thing that resonated with me is that as a student, she reached out to a respected professor for advice. That’s what I did just over a year ago when I was working on my short-term path. That really resonated with me. People want to help. Reach out to them. Also, in talking about her students, I learned she has a true interest in people and their backgrounds. The fact that she teaches non-history majors history and takes the time to know them and care made me think of the pivotal time I had at UCSD when I took science classes for non-science majors and had some incredible professors who also cared (and some who did not).

"Words matter", with leadership enthusiast and professor JC Hurtado-Prater

This week’s guest is JC Hurtado-Prater, leadership enthusiast and business professor. He teaches at Point Loma Nazarene University and Azusa Pacific University. He is also the author of four personal development books and is working on a fifth. And he is a consultant.

Prior to his current roles, JC worked in the non-profit space and in the ministry. He was also in the US Army which is where he first learned about leadership and the importance of focusing on the mission ahead. He shared insights on transitioning out of the military and into the private sector.

A dynamic personality, JC shares his opinions on many subjects. We talk about :  - Leadership and how people who are managers don’t always learn to be good leaders.

- The importance of understanding an organization before going in and trying to change it.

- How crucial therapy is to one’s own development including as a leader. He is even writing a book about his own experience.

- A pivotal moment 10 years ago when he read Warren Bennis’ “On Becoming a Leader” which has formed his ideas today

- The professor who changed his life through encouraging words and making him realize the he too could be like other members of his family and become a professor or educator

JC also has a podcast, called JC Talks: A Leadership Podcast with JC Hurtado-Prater. We chat about a subject that comes up there which is about people’s character. He believes that people can change their character with self-awareness and delves into Ray Dalio’s philosopy around radical truth and radical transparency, and the Importance of letting people in an organization be honest with the leaders.

Note from Rabiah (Host): This is a really special episode because first of all, the intro was recorded with video so you’ll see me on YouTube. But also, the guest was incredible. I had a blast with him and we had some major laughs but also got into some real issues. It was hard not to be 100% positive with JC though. We did delve into tragic loss and the importance of honouring others as we continue in our lives. I appreciated the opportunity to talk about that. In fact, JC gave me a chance to speak quite a bit. It was one of those conversations where I could have given in and not been the host but we had a good balance. Enjoy!

"Not all screen time is equal," with comic and English Teacher Rebecca Gulka

This week’s guest is Rebecca Gulka, Founder of Teaching with Class, an online English learning school, and amateur comic. Like the host of this podcast, she is an expat as a Canadian based in France.

Rebecca studied theatre as an undergraduate and then went into teaching English internationally. Before living in France, Rebecca taught English in Korea, Thailand, Russia, Haiti and China. She taught at a private school in France before making the decision to found her own school.

We talk about why she struck out on her own, many of which will resonate with educators or others in service occupations. Amongst those are teacher’s wages in France, freedom in curriculum to teach and location to work from. We also delve into the government’s role and responsibility for the education of children as well as the equity around technology in online learning.

For those who identify as workaholics or find themselves burning out, we also talk about the culture of glorifying busy-ness and overwork and how people are challenging it by looking at what is really important and focussing on that.

It isn’t all serious. We also talk about Rebecca’s comedy and comedy writing practice. Having her own business has allowed her carve out the time and space for herself to write and perform!

Note from Rabiah (Host): This was a particularly special chat because it was the first one that I have done in person since starting the podcast. It was a different editing challenge but really cool that the “studio” setup worked. I met Rebecca online in FB comedian groups on on the online circuit. Our chat extended beyond the podcast and we had some very good conversations around comedy, females in comedy and life in general. One of the positive things to come out of the lockdowns of 2020 and 2021 was the opportunity to find connection with people online. When they then become in-person connections it is even better! I loved Rebecca’s insights and hearing about her experiences and am sure listeners will too.

"You chose to go forward," with Dr. Amy Novotny, Founder of the PABR Institute

This week’s guest is Dr. Amy Novotny, Founder of the PABR Institute which focuses on a treatment method that she developed while studying the nervous system and breathing.

Dr. Novotny was a practicing physical therapist when she came up with the PABR method after experiencing extreme stress and drama in her own life. She was preparing for the Boston Marathon at the time. She started testing the method and process on others and now has her own practice.

Additionally, Dr. Novotny is an ultra-marathon runner. Astoundingly, she once ran 102.88 miles in 24 hours! She has done many races including an Iron Man Triathlon. Besides her practice and her running, Dr. Novotny is also an accomplished nature photographer. She even traveled from Arctic Norway and Finland to Antartica for 6 months with a photographer, hired on to treat him using the PABR method and also doing photography herself.

We talk about all of this and how she used the 6 months she was away to explore what she wanted to do next in her life and how facing unexpected adversity let to her building up her resilience.

I think what I really enjoyed about speaking with Dr. Novotny was that she is another great example of a person who pursued what she wanted and found the resources needed to make things happen. I think we all do this more than we realise but don’t think to celebrate it very often. I appreciate that she took the time to acknowledge her own achievements with me but also that she was honest about struggles along the way. That authenticity makes for an episode I’m very proud to share with you!

"I want to have an impact," with Financial Expert and Motivator Bob Wheeler

This week’s guest is Bob Wheeler, founder of “The Money Nerve” and the host of the podcast “Money You Should Ask”. The financial expert and motivator is also the author of a book (The Money Nerve: Navigating the Emotions of Money) and he offers a course “Mastering the Emotions of Money”.

On his podcast, Bob seeks to remove stigma of shame around financial literacy. He also addresses money and emotions in his chats with guests. The book “The Money Nerve” is about how to get healthy about money and conscious of issues around money.

Bob and I chat about his work as a comedian both in the time that he was starting out and then making it at The Comedy Store where he is currently the CFO. He was already a CPA when he started doing comedy and when Mitzi Shore called him to help with the finances at The Store he said yes.

Bob’s approach to his work is practical but he also brings compassion to his clients. He can demonstrate empathy for others in a constructive way because he has been “there” where many of them are.

Note from Rabiah (Host): It was a lot of fun to talk to Bob. I always remember the feeling I had during recording when I edit and this was a nice and easy edit! I think what struck me most about Bob was that he is able to be funny but also take people’s issues around money seriously. He felt like a kindred spirit in a way. Brené Brown is an influence on him. When taking to someone who has read her and done “the work” on themselves it is almost obvious because of how they communicate and what they communicate. There is a common language. Brené has a new book out this week too so this episode is fitting.

"We’re built to want to give back" with Deborah Heiser co-founder and CEO of The Mentor Project

This week’s guest is Deborah Heiser, Co-Founder and CEO of The Mentor Project. She also holds a PhD in Applied Developmental Psychology and has studied aging. She even did a TedX talk about rethinking aging (link below).

Deborah’s grandparents were very influential on who she has become today. She came to appreciate older people when visiting her grandmother at an assisted living facility and it changed her perspective on people. She names her grandfather was her first mentor. As a child she would ride around town with him and observe is interactions with people which were unique as he happened to be the NAACP president in Iowa. He taught her that everyone has a story and also that you don’t have to be liked by everyone.

Deborah co-founded The Mentor Project when she realised the value that mentorship had not only on the mentee but also the person doing the mentoring. She found that people had a lot of knowledge to give and wanted to provide them with a way to meet those who could benefit.

Note from Rabiah (Host): Mentorship has been a very important part of my life. I have benefitted greatly from people who who have taken the time to share their knowledge and experience with me. I don’t think being a mentee is reserved for the young. As we get older our needs for guidance change. And, as we gain experience and knowledge, as Debbie has found, doing so is rewarding. I have been doing this in different ways at my current company as well as with ic stars (see the episode with Sandee Kastrul to learn more about that organization. Maybe you’ll even become a volunteer!) I’d love to hear about your mentor/mentee stories too.

"Your entire human experience takes place in your head," with guest Kyle Roebuck Videographer

This week’s guest is Kyle Roebuck, host of the Small Stuff Podcast and videographer. Kyle is from North Carolina and studio at East Carolina University. It was there that he held a job as a school bus driver until two years after graduation. During that time, he came to the realization that a traditional job was not for him, and, he left.

Throughout his life, Kyle had always been a visual artist during things including drawing but it wasn’t until he tried photography and then videography that he also found a new career path for himself. Following his college job, Kyle gave photography a try, immersing himself YouTube videos to teach himself photography. He is someone who will try anything but will not continue to pursue it if he isn’t good at it and he was good at photography.

To make ends meet, Kyle did get another full-time job eventually and that drove him to build up his photography skillset and business more quickly so he could be free of the “9 to 5”. Having the newfound love of photography gave him a purpose at his full-time job and helped shift his attitude towards working as being something that would enable him to do what he really wanted to do sooner.

Kyle shares a lot about his experience with imposter syndrome and how it affects him. It is a subject that has come up on the podcast before but his insight was very relatable to those of us that don’t take compliments very well. He is also a believer in positive thinking and explains how it works for him.

Note from Rabiah (Host): I have done in a few times but it was interesting to host a podcast host on my podcast. Kyle was nervous but then the conversation mode kicked in and things went great.Kyle’s experience working at his campus job until after graduation was similar to mine but we both moved on in different ways. I really admire those who chose the creative career early on!

"You're in a competition with yourself," with Sammy Warrayat Host of Successful Millennials Podcast

This week’s guest is Sammy Warryat, host of the Successful Millennials podcast and founder of Financezilla, a financial consulting service.

A Georgia native, Sammy attended Georgia Tech and graduated with a degree in software engineering. He went straight into the corporate workforce and after working too many hours and facing too many roadblocks decided it was time to set out on his own. He got himself out of debt, saved his money and quit his job.

Unlike some “coaches” he sees himself as a consultant but not someone who is going to make decisions or do the work for clients. He shares what he knows but expects clients to be ready to take action for themselves. In his podcast and consulting, empowerment of the individual are themes.

On the Successful Millennials podcast, Sammy’s episodes each focus on one or two of the five categories of live he has identified to be the most important. They are money, physical and mental health, career/purpose, relationships and happiness.

Note from Rabiah (Host): The theme of people going out on their own after a more traditional career for various reasons involving working too many hours, poor management or a desire to take a chance. But, what I have noticed is the decisions weren’t rash or sudden. They were planned. Sammy planned very impressively by saving money so he could handle the risk on his own. Others planned with their partners. They all seemed to set a timeline for when they would need to head back to a job If it didn’t work out. This chat with Sammy was particularly fun because we truly are of two generations but weren’t that different.

On another note, I dedicate this episode to a friend, Richie Hannah, who I found out died right before recording the intro. He was truly funny and kind. It was too soon to lose him but it is always too soon. I could talk about his struggles and distill him down to one thing but we are a sum of all of our parts. In my only vacation of 2020 I visited him in Scotland and it was a special time. Like with others I’ve lost before, I’ll remember him for that and honor him now and then by thinking of him when I see something that I know he would like.

This week’s More Than Work Podcast guest Miriam Herst-Stein is Deputy Editor of All Things Hair, a website by Unilever. She is also a writer and a current student at the University of Denver where she is earning her Master’s in Creative Nonfiction Writing in a remote program. After graduating high school, Miriam took a gap year during which she attended a program in Jewish studies that also included writing. There, she solidified her interest in pursuing it as a career. Before getting her job at All Things Hair she was a nanny in New York City. In the last 5 years, she has worked her way up from intern to her current role.

She currently lives in Crown Heights, New York and enjoys balancing her professional work in beauty writing with her personal pursuits. She also reads in her downtime but mostly fiction. Her personal writing as well as her academic pursuits are focused on nonfiction so the fiction gives her a break!

Miriam’s faith, Hassidic Judaism is a very important part of her life. She discusses it in her writings and was also open to discussing how it impacts her personally and professionally during our chat.

It is something I held at an arm’s length for much of my life but never took a chance at professionally. This week’s More Than Work Podcast guest is Simon Prior is a Senior Test Manager at easyJet, a podcaster and a neurodiversity advocate, and he is rocking it at all three. He is based in the UK and joined the podcast from Buckinghamshire.

Simon started as a developer but ended up finding breaking things to be more the more exciting pursuit and thus started his career in QA. He promotes the importance of testing and has a strong opinion on automation. For those in software, you know this is an oft talked about subject.

On his podcast, Testing Peers, Simon and three other testing professionals talk about QA and leadership. They are also trying to encouraging the teaching of QA testing in universities. Check out their hashtag, #makeatester.

Simon has overcome burnout and shared his own personal story of collapsing from stress at one point. After that he made some changes in where he worked including choosing his work place based on how it aligns with his personal values. Like many, he is still finding balance.

As a neurodiversity advocate, Simon takes the opportunity to educate others at his workplace on things like how to interview in a more inclusive way and even how to make the airport experience more inclusive.

Note from Rabiah (Host): Simon and I first connected on LinkedIn after he responded to a post and not long after following him, I knew he was the real deal. It was refreshing to talk to someone who loves what they do but who also sees how he can make an impact to improve the lives of others. We have some similarities in that he is an advocate for a cause that impacts people he knows. For him that is his sister and son. For me, that is…me. "I got healed." with Gen Edwards, Intuitive Energy Healer

This week’s More Than Work Podcast guest is Gen Edwards, Intuitive Energy Healer. She is a registered practitioner using The Emotion and Body Codes. Gen didn’t start out as a healer. In fact, she came to this work in her 50s. Prior to that, she worked as a corporate trainer, creating training materials and delivering training.

Gen was born in Zimbabwe and lived in South Africa before moving to Leeds, United Kingdom. While meeting with a financial advisor one day, she hit a breaking point and her advisor recommended she go see an energy healer that he was seeing. It was while seeing the healer herself, that she found her calling.

Being a light worker is Gen’s life purpose because it allows her to serve others. She even sees herself working until she is 80!

Gen is one of those people that you can’t help but be in a better mood after talking to. She really loves what she does and she loves what she used to do. I think it is so fortunate when we can make a living doing something that has meaning and she’s doing it for the second time. She has now found her life’s purpose but also stayed consistent to her values up until now which is pretty cool.

"You don’t always have to be second." with Clarinetist and Composer Christina Giacona

This week’s More Than Work Podcast guest is Christina Giacona. We went to high school together in Santa Clarita, California and were in the band. After graduation, she pursued a degree in music from California State University, Northridge (CSUN). She has gone on to get her Masters at the University of New Mexico where she studied Native American Music, joined the Fort Smith Symphony in Arkansas part-time, as a clarinetist. She enjoys the opportunity to play with the innovative group.

Her and her partner Patrick Conlin, a violist and sound engineer, founded the Los Angeles New Music Ensemble in 2008 which they ran until 2014. Now they reside in Oklahoma where they have founded Onyx Lane, a full-service music production company. Christina is a professor at the University of Oklahoma teaching Native American Music and American Popular Music while studying for her second doctorate, this time in Cultural Anthropology.

“Cube of Light” is the latest album release from Christina and Patrick. They are taking it on tour soon for fully immersive audio and visual experiences giving the audience the opportunity to experience the album in a unique way.

Note from Rabiah (Host): Christina outlines how her high school music dreams have been fulfilled and it made me think a lot about how these dreams would manifest in reality if we allow ourselves to take chances. I think that the advice she has for young people pursuing creative endeavours is unique and very practical since it comes from her lived experience. I’m on board completely with her “do it yourself” sentiment and hope people come away from this one encouraged to do just that.

Founding “Open Stage Arts” and then “Creativity Found” were pivotal to her as she looked to forge a path that was truly her own outside of work. After attending university and studying contemporary dance she ended up editing non-fiction illustrated books for a living while raising a family.

At about 40, Claire studied to become a fitness dance instructor. She now also does street dance continuing to pursue her passion for movement in a different way. When she founded Open Stage Arts, Claire created a space and community for adults to try something new like acting without all the drama of am-dram and other classes. It was also something she created for herself rather than something she was doing for others. Next came her website and podcast, Creativity Found where she interviews other artists and helps them showcase their work.

Note from Rabiah (Host): This chat was a lot of fun. Claire and I met on the Clubhouse app and hit it off. Meeting her and others in some creative groups there was one of the highlights of lockdown. We have similar ridiculous senses of humour. When she tells the story of her “ginger cat” it was a good opportunity to talk to a Brit about the differences between the English we speak in the US versus the UK. And yes, when you hear me say I call my jeans “denim trousers” that is true. I have done so and yes, the person I said it to thought it was odd.

"Find a way to do it" with Priority Bicycles CEO Dave Weiner

This week’s More Than Work guest is Dave Weiner, the CEO of Priority Bicycles. Dave talks about taking a break from IT when he was the CEO of a global company, to figure out what he wanted to do next. He had a new son, business ideas, and a desire to spend his time differently so he could have more balance and be present for his family.

Dave started out working in the cycling industry after attending the University of California, Santa Barbara and it is the cycling industry that he decided to jump back into. He is innovating in the space with low maintenance bicycles including a line of low maintenance e-bikes.

We chat about the importance of pursuing your passions and doing work you’re proud of as well as the difference between delivering software and a tangible good. If you don’t think software development is related to bike production, you’ll learn why Dave thinks they are.

I met date at least 14 years ago when I was working in warehouse management. We worked with a ton of vendors at the time and as a woman in IT I wasn’t always treated with the utmost respect. Dave was a different kind of leader and different kind of business partner. I can’t remember specifics of our interactions but his kindness stuck with me. I ended up following him on LinkedIn and when I started this podcast he was one person I was set on talking to so this chat was particularly important to me. I like that he acknowledges that he isn’t working less but is doing what he loves. That’s important. As he says, some people are just going to work a lot. I’m one of those but when I’m doing it for something that has meaning it feels different. Get out there for a bike ride everyone!
